Motortown Revue Collection Review

Motortown Revue Collection

Sorry these aren't my words--think of this as a public service announcement:
It's taken a long time for the live portion of the early Motown library to finally get the treatment it deserves on compact disc -- what little of it has shown up was done very early in the CD era, when a lot of the work in finding and choosing source tapes and engineering them properly left a lot to be desired; and the early live albums by the likes of the Miracles and Marvin Gaye have never shown up legitimately, leading one to believe that there are problems finding proper master tapes on them. The four Motortown Revue albums assembled here -- of which the first three, dating between 1963 and 1965, certainly qualify as being representative of the label's classic era -- show what can be done with this repertory when the sources do exist. There are rough moments, to be sure, as it wasn't easy to record a live R&B show in those days, but the excitement of the performers and the audience overcome most of those technical flaws. The Contours bound right over the technical limitations like acrobats vaulting a not-too-high obstacle, and from there we get the Supremes with Florence Ballard center stage on the lead -- which by itself is worth the price of admission -- followed by Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder doing incredible things vocally, and the Marvelettes followed by Mary Wells (rousing the audience with the beautiful, stirring "Bye Bye Baby"). The Miracles close out the show with killer renditions of "You Really Got a Hold on Me" (including their segue into one verse and chorus of Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me") and "Way Over There," a single that they and Berry Gordy loved so much that they recorded it at least twice, and which here gets a high-octane reading that emphasizes the call-and-response component of the song, an element that was lost on the various studio renditions, amid their instrumental splendor. The work done on the sound for this reissue makes it worth hearing all over again anew, no matter how long one has known this record: the sound may have been on the raw, primitive side, but the engineers have done their best to bring out the nuances of the playing and singing, and retained the visceral energy of the performances, so much so that one easily draws a clear image of what these performances must have looked like as well. The other three volumes -- representing much of the rest of the major history of Motown across the '60s -- feature, in addition to more performances by the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, the Marvelettes, and Stevie Wonder, the work of Martha & the Vandellas, Kim Weston, the Temptations, Earl Van Dyke, the Originals, Blinky, Bobby Taylor, and Gladys Knight & the Pips, all mostly at the top of their respective games -- were recorded under far less challenging technical circumstances, and they fare even better in this setting. Indeed, the last volume, Motortown Revue Live from 1969 -- ironically, the only part of this set to ever have seen an official CD release, for all of about five minutes some 15 years earlier -- is among the finest sounding live soul documents that one is ever likely to hear. The packaging here may seem a little awkward to some onlookers -- the tendency since the late '90s has been to make multi-CD sets like this smaller and more compact, but in this case the producers have put the four volumes into mini-LP-style sleeves (without inner sleeves to protect the CDs, a continuing oversight), and put them inside of an oversized, coffee-table-book-sized package that also includes a booklet that re-creates elements of the original program books for each of the events captured here, and a reproduction of an original tour poster. It's not as cumbersome as it might sound from this description -- in fact, apart from the absence of inner sleeves (come on -- if the Japanese can do it, why can't we?), it's surprisingly handy -- and the three-hours-plus of music is well worth the asking price. ~ Bruce Eder

Berry Gordy, starting in 1962, decided the best way to market his artists and their songs and his labels and company, was to take them on the road. No matter that certain residents of the South might shoot at the bus (they did), or that the schedule was impossible to maintain health or sanity (it wasn't, but they had fun), or that being on the road meant no hits were being cut back in Detroit (there were enough stockpiled): the Motortown Revue rolled on and on, becoming an annual event for several years, including a now-legendary European tour.Subsequently, there were Motortown Revue albums every year for three years (1963-65), then a final one in 1969. The early ones were raw but drenched in excitement: your then-and-future Motown stars tearing up crowds at New York's Apollo, Detroit's Fox and Paris's Olympia. That excitement shows surpasses even language, as you will discover on disc three of this four-CD set when the MC in Paris announces "Le Tamla-Motown show...avec Earl Van Dyke et sien sextet!" As Van Dyke and company launch into "Too Many Fish In The Sea," the French crowd goes ballistic. And while Smokey Robinson apologizes to the audience for not being able to speak French, the audience hangs on every word of "Ooo Baby Baby."Available for the first time on CD (disc 4, from the Fox in 1969, made it to CD for a moment but was quickly deleted), and painstakingly remastered from the original tapes, The Motortown Revue Collection isn't content with merely being a welcome escapee from the vaults. It's packaged in a breathtaking oversize book jacket; each disc is housed in a sleeve that's a mini of the original LP jacket. The awesome booklet, using most of the original artist bios and essays and photographs from the old tour programs, replicates the look and feel of sitting at one of the original Revue shows. And how about this bonus: a repro of an original tour poster is included in the package.

Skaggs Family Christmas Review

Skaggs Family Christmas

Playing Time - 46:19 -- After hearing Volume One of Skaggs Family Christmas, "yule" need to run right down to your local CD store and pick up copies for all your friends and family members. This album is a great combination of easy-listening country and bluegrass treatments of Christmas standards and some less oft-heard material too. The bright, breezy recording includes Ricky Skaggs, members of Kentucky Thunder, The Whites, and many third generation family members. Sister/brother Molly and Luke Skaggs, along with their cousin Rachel White, make this a joyous family event. I was quite impressed by these young folks' vocal (and Molly's dulcimer) abilities.
Besides the standard bluegrass instruments, the arrangements are brought to life with tasteful whistle, percussion, accordion, dulcimer, viola, mandola, piano, bouzouki and strings. Sharon White's angelic lead vocals on "Love Came Gently" give us a rendition of soaring beauty. Nashville String Machine provides the smooth layer of synthesized wintery atmosphere. Cheryl White's voice is also a perfect gift for the holidays. The mid-set pickup is "Hangin' Round the Mistletoe," a cute and catchy song featuring Buck White's lead vocal and piano. An instrumental "Deck the Halls" is rather short at 2 minutes, but the band's hot breaks, even though conservatively confined to the song's melody, will melt even the coldest icicle.
One interesting selection is Buck White's recitation of "The Christmas Guest" (words by Grandpa Jones and Bill Walker). Gospel bluegrass collections occasionally have recitations, such as Ralph Stanley's moving story by Dean Deel, "On a High, High Mountain," about a friend's passing of his mother and father. On a Christmas album, however, a 5-minute recitation could be slightly distracting to some families spinning the CD for background music at holiday reunions. However, the poetic story is worth listening to closely. After seeing a vision in a dream, a man prepares for the Lord to be his Christmas guest. While seemingly disappointed by His non-appearance, the man discovers that He actually did appear as a beggar, hungry woman, and lonely child who were all met with the man's love and warmth on Christmas day.
In keeping with Skaggs Family's great support of the bluegrass genre, it might have been nice to tap the traditional bluegrass repertoire for some material. Granted there might not be a lot of Christmas bluegrass material, but imagine contemporary Skaggs Family arrangements of Ralph Stanley's "Jesus Christ is Born," "Holiday Pickin'" or perhaps "Christmas is Near." Or better yet how about a cover of Virginia Stauffer's "That's Christmas Time to Me," partly in tribute to Ricky's mentor, Bill Monroe? All in all, "A Skaggs Family Christmas" is an inspirational delight. This musical treasure has very warm and pleasant sounds for families at fireside during the holiday season. Thanks to the Skaggs Family for sharing their music, love, and warmth during a very religious and emotional time of the year. CMT will host a Skaggs Family Christmas television special on December 10, 2005, with several repeats of it throughout the holidays. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

American Idol Greatest Moments Review

...The people on this CD went threw hell to get as far as they did, so wether you like them or not, you have to give credit where credit is due.
1. Natural Woman-Kelly Clarkson- Her live performance rocked the house and the cd track was no exception. Let's face it the girl can blow! The only disapointment was I really wanted to hear the Mariah Carey high note on the cd (like she did on the show) but they toned it down a bit.
2. Respect-Kelly Clarkson- again, awesome job but I feel that her live performance of this song is way better than the cd song.
3.For Once in My Life-Justin Guarini-I think he is a great live performer. He has excellent stage presence and he is totally at home on stage, the cd makes him sound so much better than his live performances. He did a great job on this song.
4.Get Here-Justin Guarini- Always loved it when he performed this song and the cd version is great. He sounds completly professional, again great job.
5. Piece of my Heart- Nikki McKibbin-not a big Nikki fan. I feel to appreciate her voice you'd have to catch her singing in the shower. Did not like the song, a little to rough sounding for me but out of everyone on the show, no one handled Simon's critisicm better than she did. She did her thing, and I respect that, just have never really liked her voice.
6. A house is not a home- Tamayra Gray- this chick is going places. She ripped this song up and made it her own. I think that America screwed up when they voted her off but hey that is the way it goes, nontheless she performed this song beautifully!
7. Lately-R.J. Helton- what a cutie!! I always liked him. The song on the cd wasn't the best, but his voice is real pure and he never has to strain to hit the notes.
8. Ain't no Sunshine-Christina Christian- By far my favorite song on the entire album. She has such a unique voice and her live performance of this song was great. She sounds great and I look for her to land a record deal anyday.
9. If you really love me-Ryan Starr- hated it.To me it sounds like she alters her voice into something it's really not. She slurs on the word "clearly" in the middle of the song and it sounds like she has a bull in her throat, I just wish that she would sing her age.
10.My Chere Amor-A.J. Gill-I'm sure he has a heart of Gold but it's a little to "Backstreet" for me. Wasn't crazy about this song or his singing.
11.I'll Be- E.J. Day- What was America thinking when they voted off E.J.? He was by far the best male singer of the group. He rocked this song and I like it better than the original. He was underestimated and I think that if he would have gotten past the first week, he would have been the one standing next to Kelly at the end.
12. Easy-Jim Veraross- Simon was right when he said Jim was out of his league- His top ten spot definitly could have gone to someone else. He just doesn't have the range like the others and although he sounds okay on the cd, it just didn't do much for me.
13. California Dreaming-Group- Would have rather heard "Joy to the World" but I liked the harmonies and I think that they sing good together, very impressed by the song.
14. A Moment Like This-Kelly Clarkson- this song was made for her. Her range and tone is unbelivable and this song gives me goose bumps.
15. Before your Love-Kelly Clarkson- this girl could sing the back of a Corn Flakes Box and it would probably make it to number 1. I like this song even better than "A Moment Like This" and I am so glad that America voted her as the American Idol.

WOW! What a great CD! Bring back the 80's man! This CD has all of the songs from the earily 80's Break Dancing Era. I enjoyed Radioactivity and Tour De France the most. "Let's Jam, Let's Jam Radioactivity" and "Pal la vue misure, Tour De France Tour De France" (smile). I was a 3rd grade break dancing and pop locking when these songs were released back in 1983. Last, "Shackles" by R.J.'s Latest Arrival was the best break dance song ever written. This is the best CD I have ever purchased that has the 3 most popular break dance and pop locking songs from that time period. This is a must buy and I highly recommend this CD because it contains some of the songs and artist who pioneered Rap and Hip Hop with Electronic Beats, Drum machines, and Mixing and Scratching. "Shackles on my feet, won't let me dance, Shackles on my feet won't let me stand, turn up the music that has a nice beat, Turn it up loud and take these shackles off my feet." Can you see me break dancing I am so happy I finally found these song after years of searching for the lost 12 inch records and CDs(smile and jam with me)?

Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company Review

A great dance company demands equally great music. I was fortunate enough to see two live performances by the Bayanihan - one here in the US and the other in Manila. Both times I found it hard to resist singing or humming along to the music of my motherland.
This cd brings back those memories. It's a fine production. You can even hear the clapping of the bamboo poles in "Tinikling," much like you would in a live performance.
Too bad there is no video to accompany it, though.

A Woman's Heart: A Decade On Review

A Woman's Heart: A Decade On

A Woman's Heart 1 and 2 introduced me to a number of wonderful Celtic artists, most notably Dolores Keane. (Like "Mary29" I was also prompted to go out and buy as many of her CD's as I could find.) Though I thoroughly enjoyed all of the songs on "A Decade On" I was completely blown away by "Mystic Lipstick" (written by Christy Moore and sung here by Maura O'Connell), quite possibly the most hauntingly beautiful song I've ever heard. I have to believe the woman in this song is actually Ireland ... "She keeps fools for counsel, she keeps the wig and gown. The cloth and the bloody warfare, the stars and stripes and crown. And still we pray for a better day now, God willing it's for the best. But I've just seen the harp on the penny with a dollar on (...)." The imagery and heartbreak of the lyrics are conveyed perfectly by Maura O'Connell's beautiful interpretation and voice. Worth every penny for this song alone, this is one CD that I'm going to be playing over and over. (And I'll soon be having some Maura O'Connell CD's to keep my Dolores Keane CD's company :-)

Rock Against Bush, Vol. 1 Review

Rock Against Bush, Vol. 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a really really good album. Im saying that to the people who may be turned off by its political leanings. People, this isnt just some Bush-hatefest put to music, not at all. Most of these songs have a message of some kind, some more vauge than others, but for the most part its pretty soft. And above all else the music just plain rocks. There isnt a bad track on this compilation. They all sound great, and with 26 different bands you can listen to it again and again and not get bored with it. Its awesome. Now to breakdown the tracks:
1. None More Black - Nothing To Do When Your Caught in a Vacancy: 8/10 Pay no attnetion to the titles of half of these tracks, most of them have little to do with the lyrics.
2. Sum 41 - Moron: 7/10 Ive always been a little turned off to Sum 41 because they are so mainstream, but they earn points for a good effort here.
3. Alkaline Trio - Warbrain: 9/10 Great song. These guys have great sound and good vocals.
4. Epoxies - Need More Time: 9/10 I really like this song, but its not your run-of-the-mill punk track at all, so some people might not care for it. Its got keyboards and a steady syth line throughout thats kind of 80s/new wave sounding, but its got fast beat and great vocals (female singer) and good lyrics too.
5. Anti-Flag - The School of Assassins: 9/10 This song rocks. Great lyrics, great backup and beat. The clips they play between verses are kind of weird though.
6. Against Me! - Sink, Florida, Sink (Electric): 8/10 Good song.
7. The Offspring - Baghdad: 9/10 I usually dont care for Offspring because they are such sellouts, but they score big points for contributing to this CD, and the song they play is badass so Ive gotta give it to em.
8. The Get Up Kids - Lion and the Lamb: 8/10 Kind of slow but good beat, good vocals, and good piano that make for a great sound.
9. Rise Against - Give It All: 7/10
10. Ministry - No W: 8/10 The vocals are kind of crappy, but the soundbites from Dubya make this song fun to listen to, and the music rocks.
11. Descendents - Sad State of Affairs: 9/10 Love the Descendents. They give a great effort in this song, though the lyrics arent anything to write home about.
12. Authority Zero - Revolution: 8/10 Great song, good lyrics, and rockin sound.
13. The Soviettes: Paranoia! Cha-Cha-Cha: 9/10 Kind of pop sounding, but thats just because the girls that sing sound so much like Save Ferris (only without the horns). Also really catchy and fun.
14. Jello Biafra with DOA - Thats Progress: 10/10 Im a sucker for Jello so the rating is kind of biased, but its great to hear him with a great band like DOA. Great lyrics, which is to be expected and though DOA arent DK they do a good enough job to compliment Jello's vocals and energy.
15. RX Bandits - Overcome (The Recapitulation) 7/10: Is that Sublime? No, but it sure sounds like it. This is the longest song on the album, it starts out slow sounding like reggae but it picks up and gets better. Good lyrics.
16. Strung Out - No Voice of Mine 8/10 Good lyrics.
17. Strike Anywhere - To the World: 9/10 Fast, angry, and hardcore sound with great lyrics.
18. The Ataris - Heaven is Falling: 10/10 This is a cover of a Bad Religion song about the first gulf war. I like this cover which says a lot because I usually hate cover songs. But they play is acoustic and slower than the original which sounds really good. And the lead singer of the Ataris has a lot better voice than Greg Graffin thats for sure. Still not as good as the original but a great effort.
19. Pennywise - God Save the USA: 9/10 Ok we all know Pennywise could have used any of their songs on this CD ok, and they all would have fit right in. But the song is still great. Great lyrics.
20. Denali - Normal Days: 11/10 The best track on the CD. Ironic because its the least political of them all but that doesnt matter. Maura Davis has the finest voice I have ever heard. Best vocals ever! Gwen Stefani can eat her dust. To compliment her amazing vocals you have a keyboard line and guitars that mesh together in a way that I just cant describe. Awesome, simply awesome. I get chills just listening to this song.
21. The World/Inferno Friendship Society - The Expatriate Act: 8/10 Good lyrics, great backup. All around good song.
22. New Found Glory - No News is Good News: 7/10 Another band thats too popular so my taste, but still a good effort here.
23. The Frisk - Basket of Snakes: 9/10 Good hardcore sound, fast and angry. Good catchy chorus.
24. NOFX - Jaw, Knee, Music: 7/10 I find this track confusing. NOFX can be as politcal as anybody and make it work, I mean this whole thing was Fat Mike's baby. But they give us this track thats got nothing to say whatsoever. It would be good if it were on one of their other albums and all but for this I expected more. They should have contributed "Idiot Son of an A$$hole" instead.
25. Social Distortion - Its the Law: 9/10 Love Social D. Great song, catchy too
26. Less Than Jake with Billy Bragg - The Brightest Bulb Has Burned Out: 9/10 This should be 10/10 because its LTJ, a great great band playing a great song with good lyrics with their typical ska sound that I know I love, but Billy Bragg's vocals bring it down I think. He's just not that good IMO.
Well thats it, hope this was helpful.

Music as a Weapon II (CD & DVD) Review

Music as a Weapon II (CD and DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even though I never attended any of the 'Music As A Weapon 2003' shows, I have seen Disturbed & Chevelle live, and that is why I found this album so appealing. Disturbed's second headlining package tour featured Taproot, Chevelle and the now defunct Unloco. Together, some of the bands best tracks are present, with a few collaborations, covers and rarities. Obviously, Disturbed are prominently featured. Most of the live songs here are pulled from 2002's 'Believe' disc, but there are a few little nuggets that stand out, such as a collaboration with Pete of Chevelle and Joey of Unloco on the hit "Stupify," the previously unreleased track "Dehumanized" (the studio version remains unheard) and a surprising cover of Metallica's "Fade To Black." The band is in top form (just as when I saw them in 2001) here. Taproot, who played direct support to Disturbed on the tour, only get three songs, which is disappointing. I would have hoped for more, especially since nothing from their debut, 'Gift,' is featured, but the band does a superb job with what they are given. Chevelle are given a mere two tracks, which is shocking considering the amount of success they have had in the past two years. "Forfeit" is an amazing song live, and Disturbed frontman David Draiman helps beef up "The Red" with a guest spot. If you want more live Chevelle, they have a live CD out called "Live From The Road," which is definitely worth checking out. As far as what they have featured here, I am a little disappointed. It would have been nice to hear some songs that are a little harder to find from them (i.e. "Don't Fake This," which they didn't play live when I saw them and doesn't appear on their live album either). Finally, Unloco, the opening band makes a decent performance with "Empty" and the far superior "Bruises." Nothing much to scream over, though. The DVD covers the same area as the CD. Same performances and all, along with the music video for Disturbed's "Liberate." All in all, it's a decent buy. It's definitely somewhat lacking, but if you went to one of the shows or have seen any of the bands live, this would be a nice little package to own. Personally, I don't feel the DVD is really necessary, and I recommend sticking to just the CD version.

LOVE TRAIN easily trumps Sony Legacy's previously released three-cd Philly box set (1997's excellent THE PHILLY SOUND: KENNY GAMBLE, LEON HUFF & THE STORY OF BROTHERLY LOVE)by offering 23 more songs and expanding the years of the material up to 1983. Unlike the 1997 box set, the works of producer Thom Bell are represented here along with the best of the Gamble and Huff productions. One big surprise entry is Deniece Williams' top-10 remake of the Royaltones "It's Gonna Take A Miracle", which was produced by Thom Bell and recorded in Philly. The set ends perfectly with Patti Labelle's #1 r&b hit "If Only You Knew", the last big hurrah of the Philly sound. It would have been nice to include the 1973 Thom Bell-produced top 30 pop hits "One Man Band" by Ronnie Dyson and "I'm Doing Fine Now" by New York City, however.
Improved song selection, detailed booklet and great remastered sound make this collection a must for Philly soul fans.

Hard to Find 45's on CD: Sweet Soul Sounds Review

Hard to Find 45's on CD: Sweet Soul Sounds
Average Reviews:

Chances are that if you own any of the tunes included in this latest release from Eric Records they are on 45's. The fact of the matter is that very few of these songs ever made it on to an LP. Eric has done a tremendous service to collectors by assembling an eclectic variety of "Hard-to-Find" 1960's soul songs from some of the "hot spots" all over the U.S. From legendary recording studios in smaller towns like Muscle Shoals, New Orleans and Memphis to the funky and soulful sounds emminating from the turbulant urban scene in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York and Detroit--this collection covers it all!
Since Eric Records reinvented itself several years ago, it has issued nothing but the highest quality collections. The remastering is consistently outstanding and the liner notes always informative and helpful. Such is the case with "Sweet Soul Sounds". Some of my very favorite 60's soul sounds appear here including The Parliaments 1967 smash "(I Wanna) Testify" and one-hit wonder Darrell Banks with "Open The Door To Your Heart" from the previous year. The fidelity on the original single releases left much to be desired so hearing these remastered songs on CD is really like hearing them for the very first time. I was also pleased to find Johnny Adams' incredible "Reconsider Me" which in my opinion qualifies as one of the most underrated soul tunes of all time. Also included are a pair of songs that just barely missed making Billboard's "Top Pop Singles" chart that I had never even heard before. I particularly liked Little Jerry Williams recording of "I'm The Lover Man" and "She's Looking Good" by Rodger Collins is a nice tune as well. It's always hard to figure why some songs make it and others don't.
Other tunes I was tickled to find on this collection were Archie Bell and the Drells 1968 hit "(There's Gonna Be A)Showdown", "Expressway To Your Heart" by the blue-eyed soul outfit Soul Survivors and a song you just never hear on the radio, 1970's "Loveland" by Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. Love that tune! Look closely at the 20 tracks on this disc and any serious collector is bound to find at least a couple of songs they have been looking for. Kudos to Eric for yet another outstanding offering! Most highly recommended!

This is the first-ever soul collection in Eric’s famous oldies series. "Sweet Soul Sounds" includes such classics as Clarence Carter's cheating epic, "Slip Away," and Archie Bell's dance ultimatum, "There's Gonna Be A Showdown." But the great joys of this collection are the hard-to-find gems previously unavailable to most collectors - songs like "(I Wanna) Testify," featuring a pre-P-Funk George Clinton, and two soul classics making their CD debut:Denise LaSalle's "Trapped By A Thing Called Love" is one of the last great Old School soul songs, recorded in 1971 as soul music was morphing into funk and disco; it appears here on a U.S. CD for the first time ever. And, Little Sister, a female trio featuring Sly Stone's younger sibling, is represented by two cuts, one of which - "You're the One (Parts 1 & 2 )" - has never been available on any CD anywhere!"Sweet Soul Sounds" includes 20 HITS (16 of them were Top Thirty Pop and 17 made Top Ten R&B). All tracks have been digitally mastered to the exacting standards of Eric Records - in true stereo wherever possible. CD includes an 8-page booklet with detailed liner notes on each song written by renowned soul authority, Randy Poe.

Alligator Records 20th Anniversary Collection Review

Alligator Records 20th Anniversary Collection
Average Reviews:

Amazon keeps inter-mixing the reviews for the 'Alligator Records 20th Anniversary Collection' album and the similarly named 'Alligator Records 20th Anniversary tour' album. So I will include a review of both here to set the record straight.
The 'Collection' album is by far superior to the 'tour' album. The collection has many artists on show and offers a bit of everything. The best tracks are AC Reed's 'These blues are killing me' with SRV brilliant on guitar, Little Charlie and the Nightcats with 'Rain', Roy Buchanan's classic 'Drowning on dry land', Koko Taylor with 'That's why i'm crying', Katie Webster with 'Pussycat Moan', Son Seal with 'Going back home' and Hound Dog Taylor and the classic 'Give me back my wig'. The album is uneven as you would expect for a label show case but well worth it as a introduction to a variety of blues styles and artists.
The 1993 20th aniversary tour album has only Li' Ed, (the late) Kattie Wester, Elvin Bishop, Lonnie Brooks and Koko Taylor. The album does typify Alligator records music that by my definition is mostly reasonable blues without being great. This live album has plenty of energy and is listenable, but fails to scale the heights I expect of the blues.

Ride With Bob Review

First the cover caught my eye, then the list of all star guests from Shawn Colvin to Lyle Lovett to Reba McEntire. As an easterner who grew up on pop music, I didn't know a thing about Asleep at the Wheel or Bob Wills, I am embarrassed to say. But after listening to this CD many times, I want to know more. Every song is a gem. Some will break your heart; try "Faded Love" with Shawn Colvin and Lyle Lovett. Others will make you laugh; try "Roly Poly" with the Dixie Chicks. The whole thing is evocative of another time, from "San Antonio Rose" with Dwight Yoakum to and "St. Louis Blues" with Merle Haggard. If you've tired of pop music like I have and turned to other forms like jazz and swing for listening entertainment, you'll love this album. Plus the liner notes are so creative and fun to read (really)! Thanks to Roy Benson and Asleep at the Wheel for a real treat.

this is an essential dvd if you are into def jux. its about 200 minutes of footage, so you dont feel cheated like you do with a lot of other dvds. the tour footage is pretty cool. el-p, lif, and rjd2 go around the united states, along with copywrite, cage, and dj fakts one. pretty funny stuff...including el-p slapping some kid, el-p talking about lif's PS2 obsession, and tons of other funny stuff.
the documentary is also pretty good. a lot of footage of el-p, aesop rock, and vast aire from can ox. live videos of 2 lif songs, an rjd2 song, and 2 from el. there are also a couple music videos including the veryfunny Murs one featuring shock g and humpty.
the bottom line is if you are into def jux and have a dvd player, there really is no reason for you to not have this.

THIS ISN'T JOSEPH. I AM HIS OLDEST DAUGHTER.
I am soooo MAD right now. This is just an Omarion/Bow Wow show. And I admit they were good (especially Khelo Thomas), but where the heck are B5 and Pretty Ricky? NO WHERE THAT'S WHERE!!!! THEY SHOULD HAVE FILMED THE D.C. CONCERT!!!
Unless you like Bow Wow and Omarion, DON'T BUY THIS!!!

Beyond Warped: The Vans Warped Tour '04 Review

Beyond Warped: The Vans Warped Tour '04

Alright,
I am a huge fan of Warped Tour in general. Ive only missed 1 year of it, my band has played on it, and I just love it in general. Therefore, I have seen/bought all of the Warped Tour DVDS.
This DVD is by far the worst one that has been made yet. Warped Tour 2004 was the 10 Year Anniversary and featured such great punk acts as Bad Religion, NOFX, Flogging Molly, and many others. This DVD failed to show any of these punk legends (Anti-Flag and the Bouncing Souls were the only 2 mainstage bands included). However, Aloha Films did manage to throw in some of the better less-known punk acts in the mix.
If you are into other underground acts, such as Guttermouth, the Matches, or River City Rebels, then you should check this out. Also, the Julliete and The Licks performance is pretty good.
Besides the lack of some of the staple acts of Warped, the cinematography and filming is just horrible. Some interviews are way too close-up (I.E. The Bowling For Soup interviews at the beginning of the film), and, although this may seem weird coming from an extremely heterosexual male, there is an insane amount of shots of poser-punk young teenage girls.
Thankfully, this DVD IS NOT AN OFFICIAL RELEASE! That means, Warped Tour will be releasing their very own 10 Year Anniversary DVD sometime in May or June. Honestly, I would save my cash and wait until the official DVD is released.
Rock On,
Nick
