Parallel Realities Review

Having written or co-written more than half of the tracks on this album, it was exceedingly modest and generous of Pat Metheny not to insist that this be called a DeJohnette-Metheny album. Pat's compositions are up to his usual standard, but with the title track, 'Parallel Realities', he contributed a real corker. All Metheny Group fans have to have this CD for that track alone. The central part is great driving music, where all three musicians gets to improvise over a rhythm reminiscent of Pink Floyd's 'On The Run' from 'Dark Side of the Moon'.
My question about this CD is: how late did Herbie Hancock come to the project? Both DeJohnette and Metheny play keyboards on most of the tracks -- they even alternate on keyboard bass -- with Hancock only providing acoustic piano, except on the last track. The impression is of a well-structured two-man project, to which a pianist has been added at almost the last minute. Hancock is welcome, and his colourations add much to the tone of the whole album. But it would have been great if he had written a piece.
I saw the band when they went on tour to promote this and, strangely, Metheny's 'Question and Answer' album together. Rather than use keyboard bass, they employed acoustic maestro Dave Holland. It was a great UK concert and my only frustration was that the audience didn't demand an encore, to enable the band to play 'Parallel Realities'.
This was Metheny's first album of the 1990s, and in retrospect, he didn't quite have the stellar decade we had hoped. I sincerely believe that Metheny is the most important popular music composer of the last quarter of the 20th century. In the 80s he fulfilled so much of the promise that he had showed in the second half of the 70s. But in the 90s, rather than giving us something akin to say, the late quartets that Beethoven produced, Metheny has spent much of his time playing with the surviving jazz greats and producing the odd film soundtrack.
This album was another of Metheny's expeditions with the roster of jazz greats, and is enjoyable, if not profound, fusion music.

High Quality Streisand was 'The Concert' Video and CD. It was professional 'Top Drawer' all the way. I did not get a chance to see her live performance, but if the CD were a tape, I would have worn it out by now. The Video, well I need to replace that......it is very good, and I am not surprised it got a five star, from others. I have always enjoyed Babs and she never seems to let us down. My favorite part of 'The Concert Video' is when she does the psychatrist scenes. She is hilarious when she states: 'Have I ever seen a psychatrist? ' Slapstic Streisand....performs well. My favorite song is from Yentil. She does such a good blend with her alter voice in the screen video version. The blend is very well done. I have shown this video to anyone that wants to watch it. It is a favorite at my parties. People want to see it over, and over again. It is a crowd favorite.

Scratch - All the Way Live (2004) Review

Scratch - All the Way Live (2004)

Jay uses a laptop because he's running a program called Final Scratch that allows him to digitize some of his records. It's just new technology, you can hate it if you want, but it all comes down to the fact that he's an original party rocker and he just wants to make people have fun. And he is a forefather of scratching. Listen to Mike and Z Trip talk about him on the DVD. Respect.
Z Trip's set is awesome. He's getting big now, and you can see why here. Really creative. Everything from old school hip hop to Pantera. Ever seen a moshpit at a hip hop concert? Well, here you go.
I think the X- Ecutioners were a little off that night. They are pretty technical and sometimes it doesn't translate. They are the only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars. But it's still impressive to see them perform. And this is probably the last footage of them before they broke up.
Mike's set is absolutley insane. That last reviewer said "no tricks, nothing new." Dude, what were you watching? Mike pulls some crazy stuff out of his brain. His crabbing technique is nuts. He even nails the lighting guy in mid-performance for making it look like a "rave." I can't repeat what he says here, but trust me, it's priceless. He and Z Trip get the crowd moving like I haven't seen in a while. I guess if that's what you mean by Mike "biting" Z Trip, then yeah, I agree. In any case, Mike is one of the most technically sophisticated turntablists out there (the other being Q Bert) but Mike really knows how to rock a party, too.
I haven't watched all of the bonus features yet or listened to the commentary, but I did watch the Shepard Fairey feature, and it's definitely part of the reason I like this DVD so much. He's really well know in the street-art world and this is a good insight into what he does and how he does it. I'm actually kinda surprised that his part hasn't gotten more hype, I think people just don't realize that it's on there.
I recommend this DVD to anybody who is already down. For those of you who are merely interested, check out Mike's part and feel your head spin.
And if you're still not convinced, check out a couple other online reviews, like the one from the last issue of RS.

Well, it's a crime that this has not been reviewed yet. And I am not good enough to do Zazie justice. I have been thinking about why I like what I like. I think the standard is basically to compare everything against The Beatles. I think so much of what I like has the qualities of originality, harmony, melody, good rock, interesting lyrics, tells a story, makes you feel something, and to me, most importantly...makes me move my body. Zazie has all those qualities. I have heard people compare to her to other "more talented" singers. That isn't the point- Zazie does what she does and does it so well. So how do I describe? Maybe a jazzier Feist. But you can't exclude how the french language and way of thinking contributes to this music. It seems that someday we will become multi-cultural enough where it doesn't matter if music is sung in English. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and listen to Zazie. Better yet, check out a U Tube Video of her....the visual element of this striking woman with such a sense of herself...well it will make you a bigger fan. By the way, another great french artist- check out Camille (Dalmais)
