...The people on this CD went threw hell to get as far as they did, so wether you like them or not, you have to give credit where credit is due.
1. Natural Woman-Kelly Clarkson- Her live performance rocked the house and the cd track was no exception. Let's face it the girl can blow! The only disapointment was I really wanted to hear the Mariah Carey high note on the cd (like she did on the show) but they toned it down a bit.
2. Respect-Kelly Clarkson- again, awesome job but I feel that her live performance of this song is way better than the cd song.
3.For Once in My Life-Justin Guarini-I think he is a great live performer. He has excellent stage presence and he is totally at home on stage, the cd makes him sound so much better than his live performances. He did a great job on this song.
4.Get Here-Justin Guarini- Always loved it when he performed this song and the cd version is great. He sounds completly professional, again great job.
5. Piece of my Heart- Nikki McKibbin-not a big Nikki fan. I feel to appreciate her voice you'd have to catch her singing in the shower. Did not like the song, a little to rough sounding for me but out of everyone on the show, no one handled Simon's critisicm better than she did. She did her thing, and I respect that, just have never really liked her voice.
6. A house is not a home- Tamayra Gray- this chick is going places. She ripped this song up and made it her own. I think that America screwed up when they voted her off but hey that is the way it goes, nontheless she performed this song beautifully!
7. Lately-R.J. Helton- what a cutie!! I always liked him. The song on the cd wasn't the best, but his voice is real pure and he never has to strain to hit the notes.
8. Ain't no Sunshine-Christina Christian- By far my favorite song on the entire album. She has such a unique voice and her live performance of this song was great. She sounds great and I look for her to land a record deal anyday.
9. If you really love me-Ryan Starr- hated it.To me it sounds like she alters her voice into something it's really not. She slurs on the word "clearly" in the middle of the song and it sounds like she has a bull in her throat, I just wish that she would sing her age.
10.My Chere Amor-A.J. Gill-I'm sure he has a heart of Gold but it's a little to "Backstreet" for me. Wasn't crazy about this song or his singing.
11.I'll Be- E.J. Day- What was America thinking when they voted off E.J.? He was by far the best male singer of the group. He rocked this song and I like it better than the original. He was underestimated and I think that if he would have gotten past the first week, he would have been the one standing next to Kelly at the end.
12. Easy-Jim Veraross- Simon was right when he said Jim was out of his league- His top ten spot definitly could have gone to someone else. He just doesn't have the range like the others and although he sounds okay on the cd, it just didn't do much for me.
13. California Dreaming-Group- Would have rather heard "Joy to the World" but I liked the harmonies and I think that they sing good together, very impressed by the song.
14. A Moment Like This-Kelly Clarkson- this song was made for her. Her range and tone is unbelivable and this song gives me goose bumps.
15. Before your Love-Kelly Clarkson- this girl could sing the back of a Corn Flakes Box and it would probably make it to number 1. I like this song even better than "A Moment Like This" and I am so glad that America voted her as the American Idol.

This is a nice collection of Namie Amuro's recent tracks. The CD features 17 tracks (recent singles and a couple new songs). The DVD which comes packaged with this CD includes a PV (promotional video, music video) for each track on the CD. I like this compilation (a pseudo "best of"). While I'm not a huge fan of a few of the songs on the CD, I wanted the "60s/70s/80s" stuff. I'm glad I have that and a lot more! Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

Dylan & The Dead Review

Dylan and The Dead
Average Reviews:

Over the years, I held off on purchasing this disc due to the almost uniformly scathing reviews blasting it - some of the most virulent and sarcastic can be found here on Amazon. However, the intriguing pairing of these two classic artists (and I'll admit like other reviews state - the beyond cool album cover) got the better of me and I bought it used as a hedge.
I've taken a listen - what do I think? a) Dylan and The Dead is not the place to start your collection of either artist; b) There are better commercially available live albums of each artist individually; and c) keeping those caveats in perspective, this is a ragged, free-wheeling, and ultimately satisfying performance that I will go back to from time to time, because I seek out this type of music for the feel and inspiration it gives me.
Contrary to what I have read, Dylan's vocals are acceptable, and they are intriguing for what he chooses to include and leave out given the generally accepted crossroads he was at in his career. The Dead's sound is unmistakable, and provides an interesting filter to standard and not so standard selections within Dylan's substantial song catalog.
Finally, I find this unique album (it will never happen again with all the same key players present) every bit as listenable as any of the countless live Dave Matthews/Phish/String Cheese Incident/You Name It albums out there that I have heard bits and pieces of but would never be motivated to purchase based on their meandering sound and lack of songcraft.
All and all, a worthy album that you will be surprised by if you are a fan of either artist, given the amount of negative reviews associated with it.

It is quite rare these days to find high quality compilations featuring female artists, but this is an absolute exception. 'Lilith Fair 2' contains a wonderful mix of old and new artists, all of whom sing with great passion and vibrancy. The music comes across as being meaningful and listenable, and successfully captures the diversity which has really brought women's music to the fore. Standout tracks include 'Angels' which is beautifully sung by Sarah and Emmylou, 'Island' by Heather Nova (she truly has an angelic voice), 'Sway' by Bic Runga (she epitomizes warmth and tenderness) and 'In the Ghetto' by the brilliant Natalie Merchant. Moreover, this compilation exudes all that is great about women's music and it truly will not disappoint. If only there were more compilations (other than the 'Lilith series) besides this!

Turn It on Again: The Hits Review

Turn It on Again: The Hits
Average Reviews:

I admit that I came to Genesis after the departure of Peter Gabriel, which means that I was listening to top 40 Genesis versus the more challenging music attempted by Peter Gabriel. Despite the lack of experimentation and depth, Genesis did turn out one serviceable song after another, and a few of these songs are excellent.
This CD focuses on the Phil Collins years, which makes sense from the title, "The Hits". As I noted above, Peter Gabriel was trying for a more cutting edge and artistic sound that some consider to be progressive rock. Typically that type of rock doesn't make for commercial hits, though the music is often artistically better than released singles. The CD also includes one song from the post-Phil Collins years, "Congo". Thus there is at least an attempt to represent Genesis throughout the group's existence.
I was surprised to hear more keyboards in these songs than I remembered hearing. One of the characteristics of many popular 80s groups was their heavy reliance on synthesizers and other keyboards, and Genesis was no exception. As an example, "Abacab" from 1981 was strongly keyboard oriented.
From the title, this CD must focus on Genesis' hits, and it certainly does. "Invisible Touch", "I Can't Dance", "No Son of Mine", and "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" are among the numerous top 40 hits that Genesis seemed to churn out regularly throughout the 80s into the early 90s. There is much to listen to from these songs, and it's the inclusion of these songs that make this CD perfect for the casual fan. However, there is more on this CD.
"I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" is a reggae-influenced song featuring the original five-member lineup from 1973s "Selling England by the Pound". This song seems a little out of place in comparison to the predominantly middle-of-the-road pop selections featured on this CD. The intro has a very progressive sound that becomes a flavor as the song evolves. The full-bodied sound is more alternative and challenging than much of Genesis' pop music years.
Another song that seems a bit out of place is "Congo". This song from the post-Phil Collins CD "Calling All Stations" still retains a pop flavor, but with four members in the lineup and a styling that could recall Duran Duran at the peak of their popularity. I enjoy this song and am tempted to either borrow or buy the CD from which it comes to see whether the other music on that CD is consistent with this song.
The last out of place song is a 1999 remake of "The Carpet Crawlers" from 1974s "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", hailed by some as a great progressive album. Several other reviewers have stated that this song is a great improvement over the original, and wish the rest of the album would be re-recorded. This song does sound good, but it is not a pop song. In some ways I would consider this particular song the best from this entire CD. I have considered buying "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" since it has been compared to other progressive albums I have enjoyed.
You know what you are going to get with a Genesis "hits" CD. The pop was solid, generally very listenable and good; little in the way of breakthrough music. However, at least three of the songs give you a flavor of the breadth of which Genesis was capable. For the casual fan that enjoys Genesis' top 40 music, I highly recommend this CD. For those that preferred Genesis before Phil Collins became the lead vocalist, you may want to stick to buying the albums from the Peter Gabriel era.

Try Me One More Time Review

After a 17 year recoding hiatus, Bromberg is back with this enjoyable set of mostly blues and folk standards. Imagine David Bromberg sitting in your living room singing and picking his Martin M-42 Signature Edition guitar. This album is great fun for Bromberg fans, with the liner notes as entertaining as the music. Ultimately, David does not "make these songs his own" in the way that he has done previously with other blues standards (e.g., "Statesboro Blues," "Dehlia"), but the album as a whole is quite enjoyable. David fingerpicks most of these tunes, breaking out the slide for two of the album's highlights, the title track and Blind Willie McTell's "Love Changing Blues." He also does a nice job with a somber and reflective reading of Elizabeth Cotten's "Shake Sugaree." Notice how the album cover is modeled after David's first solo album? Maybe this release will renew interest in the first album, and maybe someone will put that one back in print. If you're a Bromberg fan, I recommend this album without hesitation. If you're new to Bromberg, check out Midnight on the Water first.

Three long-awaited words: David Bromberg's back! Roots music fans will rejoice in the release of "Try Me One More Time," thefirst new CD in 17 years byguitarist/vocalist David Bromberg, a master practitioner of folk, blues, bluegrass and other musical genres. This new recording is undiluted David:one man, one acoustic guitar, and a repertoire of mostly traditionalmaterial performed with the intimate, assured touch of a musician who hasnothing to prove.Originally a "must-have" session man for everyone from Bob Dylan to Dionand subsequently a hard-touring bandleader and recording artist with anenthusiastic following, Bromberg gradually phased himself out of thecontinual record-tour-record cycle starting in 1980. "I got burned out," hereflects. "And I didn't want to be one of those musicians who ends up`phoning it in.' Music was too important to me to treat it that way."So he switched his focus from performing to studying, moving to Chicago in1980 to learn violin-making. Based in the Windy City until 2002, when hemoved to Delaware to open a violin shop, Bromberg has continued to tourperiodically, but has mostly stayed away from recording studios, with1990's "Sideman Serenade" his last album until now. On "Try Me One More Time," Bromberg harkens back to the acoustic folk andblues music of his early days on the mid-'60s Greenwich Village folk scene,a period when he guided the blind gospel-blues singer Reverend Gary Davisto concerts and churches in exchange for guitar lessons. Bromberg performstwo of "the Rev's" compositions on his new CD - "I Belong to the Band" and"Trying to Get Home" - as well as songs written by Robert Johnson,Elizabeth Cotton, Tommy Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, sometime Brombergemployer Bob Dylan ("It Takes a Lot to Laugh . . ."), and songs from thetraditional realm, including two exquisitely rendered instrumentals ("BuckDancer's Choice," "Hey Bub"). The title track is Bromberg's first recordingof a song he wrote more than 30 years ago. In liner notes as conversational as his distinctive, low-key vocals,Bromberg maintains that this CD is the first record he's made where he"wasn't trying to impress anybody . . . I'm just doing the tunes."Nonetheless, the outcome can't fail to delight listeners who appreciate anunderstated virtuoso playing and singing the music he loves.

Halloween Hootenanny Review

I love this CD to death! It's got surf, rockabilly, and even some macabre mambo music. This is hauntingly hip halloween party music you'll want to play all year round.
It also features a spoken intro by Zacherley, the famous TV Horror Host from the fifties. He also sits in with the crazy fun Southern Culture on the Skids for some spoken word on the track, Sinister Purpose.
This is one of those CD's I put in the player and hit repeat all tracks and start working at the computer, because I enjoy all of it. I just have to get up from working occassionally to dance around madly. The artwork inside and out on the CD is also very killer, very retro creature feature-esque.
Fun stuff!

Somewhere Back in Time: The Best of 1980-1989 Review

Somewhere Back in Time: The Best of 1980-1989

I graduated High School in 1987. I was a metal head. I wore my jean jacket with studs, boots, long hair, and a fast car. I'm currently 39 and bald. I drive the speed limit. And I'm paying a mortgage.
But I still love to relive some of the better metal of my youth. Amazingly, Maiden is not only still around, but still hugely popular. This collection really whet my appetite. If it lived up to it's title it would actually profile the exact moment of my youth.
Is it needed? No, there are countless Maiden collections. Many have these tunes all collected in a 2-cd "best of" compilation. So why on earth would you buy something new that is, in reality, a scaled down version of a set that has more than twice as many songs for an extra 4.00? Because for someone of my age, this is truly the best, "best of" compilation out there. I don't doubt that Maiden has been producing face-melting riffs all these long years. But I have not followed them.
For me, this set chonicles my youth. The Trooper? Wasted Years? Can I Play With Madness? Ryhme of the Ancient Mariner? Holy cow, this set has got it all. Nothing but classic Maiden. Not bogged down with the newer stuff.
If you're a younger fan than by all means, buy one of the 2-CD sets that chronicle the band's metamorphasis over the years. But if you're just looking for classic Maiden with no tracks that you'll skip because they're too new to recognize, then drive right in. I know every single song on this CD and it saves me from dragging out my 2-cd set and skipping over all the new stuff. This is finally a Best-Of CD that I can put and and enjoy from the first track to the last.
And in all seriousness, this is obviously not the "complete" hits from the 80-89 era. Growing up we actually used to listen to the albums all the way through. There wasn't itunes so you could just buy what you wanted. But if you had to have a greatest hits from this era, then this is about as good as it gets without making it yourself. Kudos to the band for honoring it's more senior fans. We're the ones that helped put Maiden on the charts to begin with.
And for you kids out there just getting into Maiden, if you want to know what launched Maiden to the world stage, this is the perfect primer. I love this set. I'll take this over any 2-CD best of set any day.

This is a terrific collection of metal songs that dominated the the music scene from 1983 through 1991. The era of pop-metal has been highly underrated in its place in rock history. Much of the best material from amny of the top artists are here. Some songs like the hard to finds "Turn Up The Radio" by Autograph and "The Final Countdown" by Europe are graciously included as are the huge and most memorable hits, Quiet Riot's "Cum On Feel The Noise" Great White's "Once Bitten Twice Shy" Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", Whitesnakes "Here I Go Again", "Cult Of Personality" by Living Colour, along with only slightly smaller hits including, Winger's "Seventeen", Cinderella's "Nobody's Fool", Ratt's "Round And Round" and Night Rangers underrated epic ballad "Sister Christian". They even highlight some of the genras founding fathers like Alice Cooper and Judas Priest. The only real foul-upss are in the form of Warrant deplorible top ten smash "Cherry Pie" and "Hold On Loosely" by 38 Special, which is an excellent song but also has no purpose on an album devoted to 80's metal and hair bands, not southern rock! MONSTERS OF ROCK isn't perfect ofcourse, but as perfect as it could be with the limited ability a company like Razor & Tie has with sighning top artists. By no means can a perfect 80's collection be made without missing its biggest stars like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, major non commercial acts like Metallica and AC/DC, perhaps a take from those worn out veterans used to be known as Aerosmith, and ofcourse the decades biggest star, VAN HALEN.

Alligator Records 20th Anniversary Collection Review

Alligator Records 20th Anniversary Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Amazon keeps inter-mixing the reviews for the 'Alligator Records 20th Anniversary Collection' album and the similarly named 'Alligator Records 20th Anniversary tour' album. So I will include a review of both here to set the record straight.
The 'Collection' album is by far superior to the 'tour' album. The collection has many artists on show and offers a bit of everything. The best tracks are AC Reed's 'These blues are killing me' with SRV brilliant on guitar, Little Charlie and the Nightcats with 'Rain', Roy Buchanan's classic 'Drowning on dry land', Koko Taylor with 'That's why i'm crying', Katie Webster with 'Pussycat Moan', Son Seal with 'Going back home' and Hound Dog Taylor and the classic 'Give me back my wig'. The album is uneven as you would expect for a label show case but well worth it as a introduction to a variety of blues styles and artists.
The 1993 20th aniversary tour album has only Li' Ed, (the late) Kattie Wester, Elvin Bishop, Lonnie Brooks and Koko Taylor. The album does typify Alligator records music that by my definition is mostly reasonable blues without being great. This live album has plenty of energy and is listenable, but fails to scale the heights I expect of the blues.

Despite the previous reviewer's disappointment in this collection, I think it is quite good. It isn't meant to be a hits collection. It includes a nice mix of Brad's hits and some lesser known album tracks. It's worth buying if only for his spectacular duet with Sara Evans, "New Again." My only complaint is that Amazon, for some reason, hasn't made it available digitally. However, it is available digitally from Walmart MP3.

Welcome to the Playlist series. Painstakingly compiled by the artists and the music nuts at Legacy Recordings, these collections truly represent an artists' complete body of work. We've fished through hundreds-thousands-of tracks to cherry pick the perfect playlists. Not just the hits (anyone can find those). The life changing cuts. The out-of-print tracks. The fan favorites everyone loves. The songs that make the artist who they are.You\'ll no doubt enjoy the sound of the beautifully remastered songs on this CD (as opposed to MP3's that contain less information, which translate into compromised sound). But we think the thing you'll appreciate most about this Playlist is that even though you didn't make it, you might wish you did.

This is a poor excuse for a compilation CD and an insult to most of the bands on here. Not only that, this album is also very dangerous to the state of hard music today. Before you vote my review "not helpful", take a look at the track listing. Notice how, with few exceptions, they put every hit radio single on here? What are they trying to say? That the only good song of Incubus worth listening to is "Pardon Me"? Just because it's the hit single? It's painfully obvious that MTV is picking up on something that's become more popular recently, and they're trying to turn it into a blatant trend. Because of Korn's increasing TRL exposure, MTV caught the scent of money and immediately started to turn this music into another flavor-of-the-month. Most of the kids that buy this will do so because all their favorite radio songs are on one disc, and they won't ever appreciate any of the other songs any of the artists did. Once hard music stops being trendy with the MTV kids, they'll just flock to the next music trend, find some new bands that they can buy T-shirts of, and leave one of the best styles of music ever behind as if it were just another trend. So please, for everyone's sake, if you're a fan of this type of music, don't buy this album that disgraces the bands on here because of MTV's attempt to turn good bands into one hit wonders. Instead, buy all the albums by Sevendust, Incubus, Machine Head, and other good bands and listen to the whole album, not just the radio singles. I guarantee that by really listening to these band's music, you'll discover much more good music than you can ever hear on MTV's ridiculous shows. You'd be doing yourself a favor, and by appreciating all of the songs, not just the hit singles, you can help keep hard music alive and well long after the MTV era passes. If you have any opinions, please share them, my e-mail is Khutta@aol.com.

This double CD, Follow That Dream Records' June, 2009 release, chronicles Elvis' May 30-June 1, 1975 stand in Huntsville, AL where the King gave five sold-out performances. The bulk of these discs are comprised of the 5/31 matinee and the 6/1 evening show plus six bonus tracks from two other shows that were not performed at the two main concerts. The soundboard recordings begin with the third song of the evening, "Love Me", as Elvis' engineers rarely recorded the nightly openers, "See See Rider" and "I Got A Woman"/"Amen" (although the latter is included as a bonus track on the second disc).
Elvis' energy level is high and his voice is strong throughout, with the 5/31 matinee being an exceptional aural treat. "The Wonder Of You", "Burning Love", a brief rendition of "Trouble", "Hawaiian Wedding Song", and an impromptu version of "For The Good Times" are among the highlights. Elvis juggles the set a bit the following night, with four changes, the most interesting being a blistering "Polk Salad Annie" which takes the place of an aborted "Burning Love" when he has trouble remembering the words. A sweet "I'll Remember You", and, from the bonus tracks, powerful versions of "I'm Leavin'" and "How Great Thou Art" and a spur-of-the-moment "Release Me", coupled with the interplay between Elvis and the crowd demonstrate that both the artist and his audience were having fun. The gatefold packaging, with many previously unseen high-quality photos from the stand and a well-edited, crisp-sounding mix make this a true first class presentation. If you're an Elvis concert collector, this set is as good as it gets.

Elvis was truly inspired by the superb reaction he received in Huntsville, selling out five shows. It's the only time in his career that he did so many consecutive performances in one City.

Probably the premiere recording by these Wild Eyed Southern Boys. The first three songs If I Had Been The One, Back Where You Belong, and One Time For Old Times received a tone of well deerved airplay back in the eighties. Heck the video on If I Had Been The One featured some beautiful footage of horses galloping against a country skyline. Nonetheless, If I Had Been The One is a timeless track with beautiful guitar embellishments, passionate vocals of love lost, and stunning hooks galore.
Not to omit the other album tracks, but at the worst they are harmless and at the best they are pretty darn captivating. Twentieth Century Fox rocks with a fine southern charm and Long Distance Affair has some strong hooks on the chorus. Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zandt are both in fine form vocally.
If you want to remember some good music from the eighties, pick this record up at once. You will not be dissappointed.

The American Farewell Tour Review

I first found out about this album a few weeks before it was released. I didn't really want to buy For The Record yet because it doesn't have two of my absolute favorite Alabama songs: "Christmas In Dixie" and one of the few songs that can bring a tear to my eye if I'm homesick or in the right mood, "My Home's In Alabama".
I tell you, when I saw the track listing for American Farewell Tour, I nearly hit the ceiling. But then I thought about the album's title. I was about 99.99999% sure that it would be a live effort, but if it was all studio work then I'd get it ASAP, I decided. When I found out that it IS the versions of the songs that I've been hearing on the radio all my life, I was rolling on down the highway in my car. I was in a hurry and I knew why--it was to make one of my most eager purchases in recent memory.
I couldn't imagine a much better single disc compilation of the boys from Ft. Payne. It packs in 20 songs, including ones that were recorded way back when their legend was just beginning to take form and a few of their most recent hits. There are #1 hits and not quite #1 hits alike, odes to past life and home towns, ballads, and everything in-between. Some songs you can't help but to sing along to, like "I'm In A Hurry (And Don't Know Why)". In "Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)", you can tell Alabama was having fun at the time with Randy Owen's yelling that may give you a sense of their live performance style. And yes, of course, the majority of THE most essential Alabama hits are here too, such as "Mountain Music", "Tennessee River", "Song Of The South", and one of my favorite songs of all time: "Love In The First Degree."
I can see where fans would be disappointed that this isn't a live effort, especially with the millions of compilations that Alabama has put out. But I'm not one of them. I've never been much of a fan of live albums at all. American Farewell Tour made my wish come true. It includes both old and new, most of the essentials, and the two songs that I wanted on one disc. There are only two compilations from Alabama that I've seen that I would give five stars to, and this is one of them. If you purchase any Alabama compilation apart from For The Record, this one should be it!
I've always had pride that I live in the same state that the most successful country group in history comes from, and now I smile with pride and say that I own American Farewell Tour. It serves as an excellent remembrance of an unforgettable group from the Heart of Dixie that made some classic music that will live on forever in the memories of their fans.
