(More customer reviews)As much as I like "No Surprise", the sizzling, energetic first single off Daughtry's Leave This Town (the follow-up to their multi-platinum self-titled debut), I'm even more impressed with the quality of the rest of the songs. Creative and original (especially considering this is mainstream pop/rock), this collection eliminates much of the 'cookie-cutter' nature that I felt many of those songs had while retaining hook-laden melodies that made it so successful commercially.
Dubbed by Chris as "a very big rock album", this sophomore effort starts that way with "You Don't Belong", a heavy rocker filled with '80's-inspired guitar riffs and power chords. Rather than using studio musicians as the debut did, Chris' bandmates recorded the musical tracks, and that's one of this album's major highlights and improvements. The almost not-stop touring allowed the band to develop chemistry, and the resulting cohesiveness shows through on the recording, giving this album a more loose, 'live' feel.
"Every Time You Turn Around" keeps the rock edge going...the band members were given latitude to "throw things in on the fly"...an extra solo line here, an extra cymbal crash there, and this song is a good example of that. "Life After You" finally slows things down a bit, but that's not a bad thing on this record. The string of mid-tempo or slower songs that dominate the rest of the album are not contrived or 'manufactured'-sounding...in fact, Chris' weathered voice bleeds passion and sincerity combined with his relatable relationship-themed lyrics. The production allows 'holes' to open up for the vocal(s) to be heard clearly.
Chris (collaborating with some of his rock 'buddies' and producers, including Nickelback's Chad Kroeger on two songs) seems to have honed his songwriting skills further...his almost innate ability to craft melodies and write lyrics from the heart continues to grab you and reel you in, without 'recycling' too much from the first record. Two songs in particular stand out for me... "September", a heartfelt ballad about growing up in the summertime in his small, North Carolina hometown but having to leave things behind to move forward, and "Tennessee Line", a country-flavored tune (fiddles and all) featuring country legend Vince Gill on background vocals. Unique and captivating, these gems are refreshing to hear while staying within the confines of the basic formula for Daughtry's success.
While returning producer Howard Benson throws in a few extra production tricks here and there, he manages to keep the sound fairly natural and the enhancements aren't too overdone.
The bottom line: Great songs, solid performance, and an overall stronger rock attitude. I'm not sure if the changes would be enough to win over those who didn't like Daughtry before, but if you did enjoy Daughtry Part 1, the sequel isn't likely to disappoint.

(More customer reviews)While most country stars go forward and reach for mainstream pop records, like Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood went in reverse. Her first disc had more than a few pop elements but this disc starts off with a foot stomper, "Flat on The Floor" and doesn't let up with fiddles, twang and chorus after chorus that will make you want to shout them out of your car windows. To say she has made a solid country disc in the vein of vintage Reba or Dolly is an understatement.
Underwood has even learned some new vocal tricks, as if she needed more, "Get Out of This Town," builds from an already assured vocal into a firestorm. Underwood isn't afraid to just go with the vocal and give a stronger reading as well. That was evident in her cover of "I'll Stand By You," which was simply stunning.
"Carnival Ride," is void of any weak tracks and this day and age that's a rare finding, some are stronger than others but, Jebus, the girl is giving her all to prove that she's a more than just a pretty face who sings country, she's trying to prove it's in her blood. And when you hear "You Won't Find This," that brings about that sing songy chorus that Shania Twain loves so much, you'll be a happy camper with your purchase.

American Idol Greatest Moments Review

(More customer reviews)...The people on this CD went threw hell to get as far as they did, so wether you like them or not, you have to give credit where credit is due.
1. Natural Woman-Kelly Clarkson- Her live performance rocked the house and the cd track was no exception. Let's face it the girl can blow! The only disapointment was I really wanted to hear the Mariah Carey high note on the cd (like she did on the show) but they toned it down a bit.
2. Respect-Kelly Clarkson- again, awesome job but I feel that her live performance of this song is way better than the cd song.
3.For Once in My Life-Justin Guarini-I think he is a great live performer. He has excellent stage presence and he is totally at home on stage, the cd makes him sound so much better than his live performances. He did a great job on this song.
4.Get Here-Justin Guarini- Always loved it when he performed this song and the cd version is great. He sounds completly professional,again great job.
5. Piece of my Heart- Nikki McKibbin-not a big Nikki fan. I feel to appreciate her voice you'd have to catch her singing in the shower. Did not like the song, a little to rough sounding for me but out of everyone on the show, no one handled Simon's critisicm better than she did. She did her thing, and I respect that, just have never really liked her voice.
6. A house is not a home- Tamayra Gray- this chick is going places. She ripped this song up and made it her own. I think that America screwed up when they voted her off but hey that is the way it goes, nontheless she performed this song beautifully!
7. Lately-R.J. Helton- what a cutie!! I always liked him. The song on the cd wasn't the best, but his voice is real pure and he never has to strain to hit the notes.
8. Ain't no Sunshine-Christina Christian- By far my favorite song on the entire album. She has such a unique voice and her live performance of this song was great. She sounds great and I look for her to land a record deal anyday.
9. If you really love me-Ryan Starr- hated it.To me it sounds like she alters her voice into something it's really not. She slurs on the word "clearly" in the middle of the song and it sounds like she has a bull in her throat, I just wish that she would sing her age.
10.My Chere Amor-A.J. Gill-I'm sure he has a heart of Gold but it's a little to "Backstreet" for me. Wasn't crazy about this song or his singing.
11.I'll Be- E.J. Day- What was America thinking when they voted off E.J.? He was by far the best male singer of the group. He rocked this song and I like it better than the original. He was underestimated and I think that if he would have gotten past the first week, he would have been the one standing next to Kelly at the end.
12. Easy-Jim Veraross- Simon was right when he said Jim was out of his league- His top ten spot definitly could have gone to someone else. He just doesn't have the range like the others and although he sounds okay on the cd, it just didn't do much for me.
13. California Dreaming-Group- Would have rather heard "Joy to the World" but I liked the harmonies and I think that they sing good together, very impressed by the song.
14. A Moment Like This-Kelly Clarkson- this song was made for her. Her range and tone is unbelivable and this song gives me goose bumps.
15. Before your Love-Kelly Clarkson- this girl could sing the back of a Corn Flakes Box and it would probably make it to number 1. I like this song even better than "A Moment Like This" and I am so glad that America voted her as the American Idol.

Paula Abdul: Under my Spell Live Review

(More customer reviews)Paula Abdul's first (and only) major concert tour was amazing and completely blew me away as a viewer. Seeing all of the dancing and special effects was wonderful for me as a true Paula fan. Even though I felt the show was too short and more songs from her 2 albums (up to that point) should have been included besides the obvious hits. Songs like "Will You Marry Me?", "Alright Tonight" and "State of Attraction" immediately spring to mind. I recall Paula saying in an interview that she'd seen both Madonna and Janet Jackson's tours in 1990 and that she wanted to incorporate some of the energy and spectacle from them but also wanted her show to be more exciting and more striking. Well all I can say is that she most definently succeeded, combining intense dancing, video special effects, surprisingly decent vocals and of all things, flying ballet dancers, Paula's show was definently one of a kind. Each number performed showed Paula's versatility as a dancer and choreographer and most of all, an entertainer. This Grammy and Emmy winning performer didn't get half the acclaim and credit she so richly deserved. But this is 1 fan who's certainly under Paula's spell. And by the way she looked great contrary to the above opinion, she was nowhere near "fat".

(More customer reviews)I bought this CD just to hear Clay sing "The First Noel", He was amazing as expected. I really liked most of the songs. Kelly blew me away in "My Grown Up Christmas List". This is the Kelly we fell in love with on AI1. Clay, Kelly, Tamyra & Kimberley "made" the CD. I was a bit disappointed in Christina Christian. I liked her voice on AI1, but I don't think she sang to her potential on "Winter Wonderland". I gave it 4 stars just because of a couple songs that I didn't like.

(More customer reviews)I have to start off by saying that I too am very disappointed that there are no music videos on the DVD. I swear I remember hearing that there were going to be videos. Nevertheless, I think the DVD succeeds on its own merit. The documentary itself is very interesting and I feel like I know Kelly a lot better after watching it. By the way, the six music tracks they were referring to were included in the documentary. They were played during the documentary. I definitely think the DVD should have included music videos, or at least more special features. It is still a good purchase if you are a Kelly Clarkson fan, but don't buy it if you want music videos.

(More customer reviews)In listening to this cd for the first time I found myself thinking that it would be really good music for the beach or a pool party, when you have to be aware of those around you. There is absolutely nothing offensive in the lyrics, the music is upbeat and catchy, and is more N Sync in style than Hannah Montana or Jonas Brothers. I do think the entire record would have been much more enjoyable if the female backup vocals were heard more-her voice is lovely. Safe for the young and old, not as obnoxious as some for the parents.

"We wrote the majority of our album ourselves. It's not like we looked through a catalog and picked out some songs." To that end, the Ballas Hough Band's debut puts a deeply personal spin on pop, with songs like "Fall" and "Devastated," which recount worldly lives that left a trail of broken hearts. "When we first started playing our music for the label, our A&R guy was, like, 'Man, what's wrong with you guys? We need more positivity!' All our songs were negative and hurtful, because Mark and I have been in a lot of relationships that have really hurt us. We were just going off life experience. He was probably thinking we're not old enough to know, but we do. We get music from hurt, so we had a lot to work with."To channel those emotions in the studio, they turned to in demand producer John Fields (Jimmy Eat World, Jonas Bros., Andrew W.K.), who, not unexpectedly, didn't have high hopes for an album by a couple of dancers. "When we first went in to work with him, you could tell he was pretty skeptical," says Derek, who was a big fan of Fields' work with Switchfoot. "He'd only agreed to do one song, but once we started laying down tracks, he saw that we could write and play and we had this great chemistry. We ended up doing nine songs with him." Adds Mark: "Once he jumped on board, it was like a freight train. He has amazing vision and we were on the same wavelength 100 percent of the time. Everything turned out exactly like I hoped it would." "Where John is, like, boom, boom, boom, Eric is more about cool and controlled mayhem," says Derek. "He doesn't wear shoes, he's very soft-spoken, and he looks at music as a science."Of the songs that aren't BHB originals, the first single, "Do It For You," was co-written by new American Idol judge Kara Dioguardi and makes for the perfect introduction to the band's pop sensibilities."It's really catchy, like one of those songs you walk away singing that gets stuck in your head," says Mark, "It's rhythmic, hooky and huge." David brings out the true meaning of these classic Christmas Carols and makes you feel every note of every song. I had tears in my eyes listening.This is sure to be a classic Christmas album and a standard in my house for sure! Tried and True Review

(More customer reviews)Ever since Clay Aiken ran over, got out of his car, checked the body and drove over it in reverse singing Mack the Knife on American Idol -- I have been dying for him to do a standards set. He always had an excellent way with phrasing. And that is what separates someone from just bulldozing through a song and making it truly live and breathe. There has to be a connection that goes beyond vocal ability and also, there has to be a great band. Thankfully this CD has both, naturally. The songs are allowed to simmer and build and stray just far enough from their more well known arrangements to sound familiar but also adventurous. "Suspicious Minds" keeps its jaunty juxtaposition of rhythm vs. lyrics. And What he does to an old war horse as "Misty" is just grand, he stretches and plays with those vowels like a cat with string. "Moon River," is simply flawless, ranking up there with Raul Malo's wonderful take.
I would love to see Aiken tackle more material in this genre, his voice has grown to this lovely smokey quality that still has a killer upper register. It is more than adept at carrying the weight of these lyrical gems. It would be amazing, say about 15 or so years from now, to have a library from him that is in its infancy and be able to sit next to those that have mastered the American songbook.

(More customer reviews)I admit, season 5 is the first season of "American Idol" that I started watching it. I ran out to buy this set after I saw the permiere episode of season 5. I was a little spectical at first but Im glad I bought this. Great for a American Idol beginner [like me.] or a avid watcher. I reccomend buying the best and worst together because you get a great bouns disc. This set is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.Disc one
Disc one is "The Best of American Idol". It features all the winning Idols audtions {Kelly Clarkson,Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Burrino and Carrie Underwood} You also get the runner-up audtions {Justin Gurinni, Clay Akien, Diana DeGarmo and Bo Bice.} Plus featuretts on how the show is made, "Cuddles" a extremely funny {yet disturbing} short with Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell going on a date. "Your a Star" with montages of good and bad audtions. This disk is great if you want to see great Kelly Clarkson preformances. If you want to see bad audtions get the worst of.
Disc 2
Disc two is "The Worst of American Idol". With Paula Abdul taking us through, we have everyone's favorites. {Mary Roach, Tamika Bush, Scat Girl and more.} Not only will you get William Hung's "She Bangs" audtion but you also get a extended audtion and "She Bangs" proformed with dancers!!! Be sure to take asprin before you watch this disc. Winning and Fun, this disc will be your favorite.
Disc 3
Disc 3 only comes if you buy the "Best and Worst" together. If you are fans of season 4 this disc is totally for you. Packed with interviews with Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice, this disc is OK if you like Carrie. The interview with Carrie lasts about 42:00 and unless you are a mega Carrie fan you'll get a kick out of the interviews. Bo Bice is very funny. I am a big Bice fan and I was so happy to see the Bicer in action! His interview was very very funny. The best feature on the disc is the "Carrie and Bo return home" feature. This feature allows viewers to go in-deph to where Carrie and Bo grew up. {The most winning thing on the disc is watching Bo return home!}
This is the number 1 thing for an American Idol fan to have. You won't be able to live without it. The only thing that bugs me is Carrie's profomance of "Could've Been" by Tiffany isn't here. There could've been more Consentine moments here. I think you only get one preformance from him. That's ok, Buy this now!!

All I Ever Wanted (Limited Edition CD/DVD) Review

I was worried that on this record, Kelly would be backpedaling from the bold, uncommercial, dark "My December" to make "Breakaway Pt 2"...and the similar to SYBG but improved "My Life Would Suck Without You" had me a tad worried. Nothing wrong with having hits on the radio and mass success, as long as you don't sacrifice artistic integrity and credibility for pandering commerciality, and in the wrong hands, that's what this 4th album by Kelly easily could have been.
Instead, and this is what's remarkable here, she takes the same emotional terrain of "My December", and artistic boldness, but places it in a brighter, catchier, powerpoppier context. The songs are great powerpop tunes because they concentrate on the CRAFT, not the commerciality, and the songs hold up well to repeated listens. There's lots of variety here (powerpop/dancerock/country/punk/retro girlgroup and soul), yet it doesn't sound like a hodgepodge either, with an assorted buffet that don't sound great together. Credit it to the sequencing. Songs here can stand alone as singles, but they go well together as a piece. Not easy to do. Plus, 7 of the tunes were cowritten by Kelly herself...always the best way to be. Now, I am NOT a fan of Ryan Tedder and his band Onerepublic, I hate their record with a passion, and the singles "Apologize" & "Stop & Stare" are two of the worst songs of last year...too commercial, flat and annoying. Luckily, Kelly's collabos with him are great songs...credit it more to Kelly, not Ryan...maybe they had good artistic chemistry or something.
All the tracks here are great, but one that stands out is the punky "Whyyawannabringmedown", with her approximation of Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten snarl that really works.
Bottom line...Kelly Clarkson is not afraid of artistic growth, nor is she afraid of having hits...as long as she doesn't sacrifice the art...as it should be...it's hits on her terms, commerciality and Idol be damned. Also, if it wasn't for "My December", "All I Ever Wanted" would have existed in lame form, as she wouldn't have had the proper context and growth to make it as good as it is.
Not saying it's the best album of 2009 yet, but it IS one of the better pop records of the year, and it could get even better by year's end, and I'm really curious as to what her next artistic step will be. A difficult one??? An easy one??? Only time will tell.

(More customer reviews)Fantasia's "Back to me" is easily the best R&B album of 2010. The songs are diverse with a familiar feel, as though listening to tested classics we already know, something R&B has been missing the last few years.
Opening is the midtempo piano-sprinkled "I'm doing me" (reminding me of Mary J Blige) on which she states "sometimes you have to put yourself first" as she gives her man the boot, might as well be her stand against the recent drama in her life. "Bittersweet" is a retro Soul ballad with a spoken section, soothing harmonies and gut wretching vocals. The Ne-Yo produced "Man of the house" is groovy with a more contemporary feel and Fantasia growling "if you gon' be the man, then be the man". "Who's been loving you" is skeletal with a lovely piano riff, while "Collard greens & cornbread" is another outstanding retro Soul ballad with awesome harmonies.
"Teach me" is guitar-laced Reggae/Soul which is heavily remniscent of the Lauryn Hill/Bob Marley duet "Turn your lights down low". The lovely "Move on me" features a triumphant horn section and busy percussion, while "Trust him" sounds almost Do Wop but with heavy Hip Hop beats and an insistent piano riff.
"The thrill is gone" is a haunting midtempo groove with a rap by Cee-Lo, while the lilting "Falling in love tonight" is a lovely ballad. "Even angels" is a contemporary sounding synth ballad, and closing is "I'm here" (from "The Color Purple" musical in which she starred for a year) a laid back theatrical piece that leaves ample room for her raspy soulful vocals to soar unencumbered by effects.
Definitely Fantasia's best effort yet, and yes, every bit as delicious as momma's collard greens and cornbread.

Grammy-nominated songstress Fantasia will release her highly-anticipated third studio album Back to Me on 23rd August. Leading the way with the official first single "Bittersweet," which is currently #9 on the Urban Adult Airplay chart, Back To Me is an emotionally charged album which features a sole guest appearance by Cee-Lo Green and songs written and/or produced by Ne-Yo, Claude Kelly, Chuck Harmony Rico Love, Jim Jonsin, KP & Malay. Also available for the first time as a bonus track is "I'm Here," Fantasia's signature song from her acting role as "Celie" in the Broadway play, The Color Purple.

(More customer reviews)Not since Shania Twain bared her midriff, and gained legions of fans outside of the country music scene, has there been a disc that blatantly wears its intentions on its (album) sleeve. Literally, the songwriting and producing credits are littered with a who's who of names that are ruling the charts in every genre. And with a longer listening, this album has to be Underwood's most focused. The melodies are smoother, "This Time" with its stuttering drum just below the mix and harmony is just so breezy and effective it leaves you with no choice but to tap your toes and sing-along to the chorus.
But that is what the whole album is built on, an inner arena feeling. It has a much fuller sound than carnival ride. It's grander, and oozing in bombast, "Cowboy Casanova" & "Songs Like This" give you just enough fiddle and twang to satisfy without purely catering to a pop audience. With such stellar production it is almost too easy to ignore the real star in all of this: Carrie Underwood. Her vocals and interpretation has grown, shockingly, from her last disc, which found her range expanding. "Someday When I Stop Loving You" & "Temporary Home," brings to mind the best of Martina McBride, heartbreaking beauty at its best.
Carrie Underwood is going for an even broader radio sound, but who isn't in country music today. Yes, there are a bigger array of genre bending producers that bring elements of R&B, Rock, etc., but it works so brilliantly that you can't fault her for it. If Underwood wasn't delivering such honest delivery and conviction this would be a four star disc, but she brings so much to the table vocally that is impossible to not feel that she has given her all to this project, you can feel her pushing for you to enjoy this disc. There is a faith and purity to this woman's delivery that brings to mind the best artists from Cline to Womack (whose latest CD isn't garnering as much attention as it deserves). Country music -- heck, music in general needs her.

Carrie has come a long way since her AI days including selling more than 10 million albums, garnering ACM and CMA awards and becoming the first Country artist in history to achieve 10 #1 singles from her first two albums. To top that all off, she was also recently inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame! This 2009 album includes the first single 'Cowboy Casanova'.

In this import (from Japan?) are four more bonus tracks in addition to the "Time for Miracles" bonus track: "Master Plan", "Down the Rabbit Hole" "No Boundaries"(yes, the Kara DioGuardi song), and "Voodoo." The real treasures here is the DVD, which is zone 0, (zone-free), and which plays fine in both my ten-year old JVC dvd player and my one-year old Sony DVP-FX930 portable DVD-CD player. I must admit I had been worried that the DVD would not play in the US, but not to worry. The joy of Adam Lambert comes not from just hearing him sing, but also from watching him speak, perform, just be himself. Adam's charisma oozes throughout the videos of him posing for photos for his album, singing songs for his album, and shooting the videos for "For Your Entertainment" and "Whataya Want From Me."
Finally, the actual music videos "For Your Entertainment" and "Whataya Want From Me" are included on the DVD disc. I am enjoying watching the DVD over and over again. Well worth the modest price for this combined CD and DVD set. However, lyrics for the four extra bonus songs are not included; the lyrics for the other songs on the album are just like they are in the U.S. release CD booklet. I do not buy music or videos digitally, so this import special edition of "For Your Entertainment" is much appreciated.

(More customer reviews)I was impressed by the amount of fast numbers on this cd. I loved the upbeat songs and just adored the slow ones. "Too Serious too soon" is a great hit. So is " Downtown" it just keeps me going! If you haven't bought this yet. Go for it. Also if you like POP you will love this cd.

(More customer reviews)Leona Lewis is the sort of artist you need to see as well as hear because she is beautiful and personable as well as a great singer. I was so very pleased when the Tour DVD became available. It is so well done that I felt I was at the concert. Plus I have enjoyed the added feature of being able to select the individual song tracks from the DVD menu. Come to think of it, I haven't even listened to the CD. Leona Lewis is DVD material!
I am scratching my head about another reviewer who said her singing was bad. Hey, on my system it was great! All I expected and more. Plus the artistic expression was amazing. I wonder, if that reviewer's sound system might need some tweeking?
I wish Leona all the best and can't wait for her next album. I only hope it will include some video.
