SUGARLAND "Live on the Inside" CD/DVD Live Review

SUGARLAND Live on the Inside CD/DVD Live

OK, we have a CD and DVD here, so let's look at each separately:
I'll start with the concert DVD, as it was easily the biggest selling point for me. The Oct. 2008 live show from Lexington, KY was broadast--in a heavily-edited version--on ABC in Aug. 2009. The show starts with the ambitious, soaring "Love" from the band's most recent album. From there, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush lead the band through a string of hits and a couple of surprising cover versions. Fellow Georgians R.E.M. are given not one but TWO tips of the hat, with "Nightswimming" (in a shortened version coupled rather oddly with the band's own "Joey"), and a stripped-down intimate rendering of "The One I Love." Bush shares equal mic time with Nettles on the latter. And while her powerhouse voice all but buries Bush in their radio hits, Nettles should get credit for giving her co-star a chance to shine here.
The set favors songs from last year's LOVE ON THE INSIDE. And while only about half the selected songs have thus far received radio airplay, the album tracks generally sound great live. "Genevieve" is a highlight, with the entire band joining in on the harmonies. Potential breakout star Nettles loves the spotlight, and has a lot of fun with the audience throughout the show.
For those who saw the ABC airing, note that the following tracks were omitted, but have been included here: Baby Girl, Want To, Already Gone, Steve Earl, Down in Mississippi and It Happens.
I was intially disappointed on reading the track list for the CD, as it only contains versions of 5 of the 16 tracks from the DVD. But my concerns were premature, as the disc is full of (mostly welcome) surprises. Seven of the ten tracks are cover versions, including the two R.E.M. songs. The songs covered come from diverse sources: Pearl Jam, Beyonce, Kings of Leon, Edie Brickell and the B-52's are represented. The country versions of traditional rock songs work for the most part, although I don't think any version of "Love Shack" has aged well.
Obviously, the entire concert PLUS the cover songs couldn't fit onto a single disc. But I do think 10 tracks is a bit lean; surely 3 or 4 more Sugarland songs could've been included.
Overall, though, this is a fine package and will certainly be devoured by Sugarland's many fans.

Judds Reunion: Live Review

Judds Reunion: Live

In the younger Judd days, Wynonna was kind of the "Silent' partner with the great voice, and the focus tended to be on Naomi. (Even though, the movie portrayal of Wynonna as a little girl depicted a sarcastic, hilarious little hellion). Now that she's all grown up, Wynonna has come into her own and developed an "intrigue" and "fascination" as incredible as Naomi's, and her voice (always wonderful) has strengthened and become even more powerful.
This was the "concert" you never wanted to end. They sang all their best songs, and it's as if they reach out and send love and compassion and hope through their music and through their lives.
I am fighting a terminal illness, and I have learned one important thing from the Judds. I remember in the movie when the Judds were starting out and getting rejected by everyone, and they were discouraged, Wynonna said to her mother, "What are the chances of our making it anyway--about a billion to one?" Naomi answered her and said, "Then, we'll be that one!" I never forgot it. When a doctor told me my chances were about a million to one, I remembered Naomi and said, "Then I'll be that one!" These two women have given us all so much in so many ways. I read somewhere that Naomi struggles because she wants to "save" everybody, and she can't. Maybe not, but she can certainly give people the "Hope" and the "Faith" in God to save themselves, and she has done that. God bless these two wonderful women!

Waitin on Sundown Review

This album is fantastic! It produced what I consider to be two of the best songs of Brooks & Dunn's whole career: She's Not The Cheatin' Kind and You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone. Other good songs are Silver and Gold, I'll Never Forgive My Heart, and Whiskey Under The Bridge. There are a couple of songs that I could've done without, but it's easy to overlook a couple of bad songs when you listen to all of the excellent songs on this album. Buy it today! You'll be glad you did!

Carnival Ride (CD+DVD) Review

Carnival Ride (CD+DVD)

While most country stars go forward and reach for mainstream pop records, like Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood went in reverse. Her first disc had more than a few pop elements but this disc starts off with a foot stomper, "Flat on The Floor" and doesn't let up with fiddles, twang and chorus after chorus that will make you want to shout them out of your car windows. To say she has made a solid country disc in the vein of vintage Reba or Dolly is an understatement.
Underwood has even learned some new vocal tricks, as if she needed more, "Get Out of This Town," builds from an already assured vocal into a firestorm. Underwood isn't afraid to just go with the vocal and give a stronger reading as well. That was evident in her cover of "I'll Stand By You," which was simply stunning.
"Carnival Ride," is void of any weak tracks and this day and age that's a rare finding, some are stronger than others but, Jebus, the girl is giving her all to prove that she's a more than just a pretty face who sings country, she's trying to prove it's in her blood. And when you hear "You Won't Find This," that brings about that sing songy chorus that Shania Twain loves so much, you'll be a happy camper with your purchase.

Brandi Carlile Review

Brandi Carlile

I hope people don't start getting suspicious about all these glowing reviews from Brandi's home town. I'm really not a relative or friend of hers. In fact, I had never heard of Brandi Carlile until an article was written about her last week in the local paper. On a whim (and the fact that she looks adorable on the cover) I picked it up and was completely blown away by her amazing talent. She's a little bit Bonnie Raitt, a little bit Indigo Girls and a little bit KD Lang. But she's all original. Her voice is wonderful and listening to her gives you chills the first time you hear her. I just wish the CD were a little longer since I'm finding myself listening to it 2 or 3 times a day. I can't wait for more from this talented young lady. She's destined for stardom.

Authentic. That's the first word that springs to mind when you encounter Brandi Carlile. From her rootsy bell-clear voice to the palpable emotion that seeps through every song on her stunning debut album, everything about this 23-year-old from rural Washington state is the real deal.

Deeply driven to be an artist, Carlile's life-long love affair with performing began when her musician mother brought her out onstage at the Northwest's version of the Grand Ole Opry. Carlile sang Roseanne Cash's "Tennessee Flat-Top Box". She was 8.

Growing up in the isolated foothills of Ravensdale, 50 miles outside of Seattle, Carlile turned to music for company. "Ravensdale wasn't a town," she says. "We were the only house around for acres and acres. Being in the middle of nowhere, it wasn't the kind of place you brought friends back to, so I just hung around the woods and built forts and played music with my brother and sister. That's all we did. And we thought that's what everyone else in the world did, too."

During those years, Carlile taught herself to sing. "I locked myself in my room when no one was home to see how loud and high I could sing, and how long I could hold a note," she says. "I'm sure it sounded like mating season, but I knew that's what it would take to develop a big, powerful voice." She also figured out how to play the piano ("I wanted to be like Elton John") and eventually guitar at age 17.

From then on, Carlile performed everywhere she could. She even took a job as a back-up singer for a local Elvis impersonator, an experience she credits with teaching her how to layer vocals and sing harmonies. A few years later, Carlile began to book herself and her band (Seattle natives and twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth) at restaurants around the city--the local chowder house, a popular sports bar and grill, and at any wedding or birthday party that would hire her, just so she could practice.

"I've never had a real job," she says. "I've insisted that I do nothing but play music and not let my head go anywhere else. If that means playing in a smoky bar for three hours, five nights a week, that's fine. It's discipline. It teaches you how to grab your audience, no matter who they are."

Carlile's determination and work ethic paid off in late 2004 when she signed with Columbia Records, home to several of her favorite artists, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, and James Taylor, whom she has shared a stage with. The timeless quality of her debut album for Columbia, Brandi Carlile, is proof of her intention to become a classic artist alongside her labelmates.

The album is a showcase for Carlile's expressive voice, which can turn from a tough, bluesy growl to a vulnerable, aching falsetto on a dime. The catch in her throat before she launches into those alpine high notes is reminiscent of her idol, country singer Patsy Cline.

"Patsy Cline had a really gutsy, powerful voice," she says. "I identify with that. I've gone through all sorts of vocal phases, from pop to blues to R&B, but no matter what I do, I just can't get the country & western out of my voice."

Rather than fight it, Carlile makes good use of the country flavor by juxtaposing it with dark, otherworldly melodies on songs like "Follow" and "Tragedy". Think of a female Roy Orbison or Radiohead's Thom Yorke fronting a roots-rock band and you're not far off. The contrast led Rolling Stone, which named her one of their 10 Artists to Watch in 2005, to declare: "Carlile's ethereal, melancholy ballads have a spare heartache that reflects her love for old-school country...but she loves new-school mopers like Radiohead and Jeff Buckley just as much". Indeed, those artists' influence can be felt on the simple, acoustic strummers "Happy", "Gone" and "Tragedy". Other musical stand-outs include "Throw It All Away" and "Fall Apart Again".

The ten sublime gems on Brandi Carlile were recorded sporadically throughout 2004 in Seattle, some at Carlile's home in bucolic Maple Valley, Washington. "I live in a log cabin and the ceilings are really high, so it sounds great," she says. "We rented a Pro-tools set-up and put it smack in the middle of my living room." Some of the unadorned production comes courtesy of indie-stalwart producer John Goodmanson, who has worked with Sleater-Kinney and Blonde Redhead, and the rest was driven by Carlile and the twins. "We just went in and played the songs," she says. "It interrupted my whole world for weeks, but we made some really good music."

Crazy Love (Limited Edition CD/DVD) Review

The old-time saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" may apply to traditional pop crooner Michael Buble. Indeed, Michael Buble's albums have remained conservative, maintaining the sanctity of classic standards and pop songs. 2009's follow-up 2007's extremely successful Call Me Irresponsible does maintain a sense of classicism that has come to define Buble, but there are some risks taken this go around. Sure, he doesn't ruin or over interpret the classics, but as far as arrangements, orchestrations, and vocal nuances, Buble keeps the classics 'fresh' while also keeping them 'classic.' The album isn't perfect, but it is consistent and bodes well to keep Buble's career afloat. Buble never compromises himself on this album.
Opening with "Cry Me A River", instantly, one hears that Buble wishes to exploit a slightly more adventurous side without 'rocking the boat' too much. The orchestrations here are different but brilliant and add just the right amount of change without ruining the sanctity of the classic standard. Buble, as always sounds top-rate as a vocalist.
"All of Me" scales down the experimentation of "Cry Me A River", seeking to balance between 'innovation' and 'classicism'. While the performance is another 'home-run' for Buble, it doesn't trump the excellent, cutting-edge "Cry Me A River". "Georgia on My Mind", on the other hand, finds Michael Buble at his very best, bringing new, pitch-perfect nuance to the classic that helped to shape Ray Charles' career. "Crazy Love", the title track continues a hot streak for Buble.
Perhaps most unique is "Haven't Met You Yet", which most likely will received mixed reactions from Buble fans. Personally, I think it is a departure for Buble and lays well, though it doesn't necessarily trump Buble's beautiful interpretations of standards and classic pop songs. Good, but no my favorite. "All I Do Is Dream of You" continues to differentiate from previous Buble album. It does so convincingly, given a soulful-sound that hearkens the 1950s.
"Hold On" proves to be a clear valedictory performance on Crazy Love, finding Buble at his most sensitive and best. The acoustic guitar here at the forefront gives this track more a modern pop tinge as opposed to hearkening back to classic pop. The strings are beautiful orchestrated here.
"Heartache Tonight" contrasts the slow, sensitive nature of "Hold On", solidly, though it is the Sharon Jones and Dap-Kings feature on "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" that steals the show. Funky and just overall sensational, "Baby" is certainly like nothing else from previous Michael Buble albums. "At This Moment" finds Michael Buble among the bluesiest I've ever heard. Produced by the phenomenal pop producer David Foster, it is a showstopping performance by all means.
The album closes strongly with "Stardust" and "Whatever It Takes (feat.Ron Sexsmith)". Neither tracks captivate the way that "Cry Me A River", "Georgia" or some of the 'best of the best do', but both are solid and above par.
While 'Crazy Love' isn't revolutionary pop per say, it does find the crooner extending his scope slightly, which is a positive thing. 4 stars.

Martina McBride released this CD several years ago. At the time I bought her CD and could not stop listening to it during Christmas.
Now they have packaged it with 4 new songs. Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland are my favorite new songs on the CD. Silver Bells is my favorits song on the entire CD.
If you are a Martina McBride fan or if you just like Christmas music, this is for you.
Martina could possibly have the best voice in Nashville, and now she sings our favorite carols as well..............You have to buy this one

I just picked this DVD up. I skimmed through it once, watching the hit songs. But it was when I really watched it all the way throught that I discovered how really good it is. Some of the songs I was not familiar with are among the best on the DVD, particularly John Prine's "Sam Stone" and also "Let Him Roll". I was glad to see "The Fourth Man" on the DVD as I remember the song from an LP that I have.
Having June Carter Cash and the Carter Family on the DVD is a plus. The affection and chemistry between Johnny and June is obvious. One other thing that makes this DVD special for me is that I saw him in concert at about this time (1987) when the record companies weren't too interested in him, but he was still immensely popular with the public. The DVD brings back nice memories.
I steered clear of the "Live at Montreux" because of reports of poor sound quality. This DVD does not suffer from any lack of audio or visual quality.

The Highwaymen - Willie, Waylon, Cash & Kris - Live Review

The Highwaymen - Willie, Waylon, Cash and Kris - Live
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If I were lucky to have been at this concert, it would be one of the few times where I could walk out and say.....Now THAT was a great concert!
Next best thing to being at the live concert is this videotape of country greats/legends. What a grand event with legendary heroes - the immortal Johnny Cash, quivering voice of Waylon Jennings, the talented songwriting of Kris Kristofferson and of course the versatility of Willie Nelson.
In between the songs are short snippets of separate anecdotes the four share about each other. They have respect, love and admiration for one another. The music is superb, the audience receptive and the band a core of excellent musicians.
The concert offers a diverse array of music from Willie's jazzy and sultry "Nightlife" to the comedic "Boy Named Sue" and the spiritual "Why Me Lord".
Johnny Cash sings the patriotic "Ragged Old Flag" and Waylon does his classics- "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to Be Cowboys", "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way", "Ain't No Good Chain Gang" and "Luckenbach, Texas".
Also included are the traveling tunes like "City of New Orleans" and "Highwayman". Johnny Cash sings his classics, "Ring of Fire" and "Folsom Prison Blues". The other three join him for a fantastic performance of "Big River". A perennial favorite is Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee".
On the softer side - Waylon's "Amanda" and the beautiful song "Always On My Mind". Willie does this one in his original classic way.
And there are the cowboys tunes, "Silver Stallion" "Last Cowboy Song". The four lend a voice to each other's songs. They are always on stage together.
Some songs I wasn't very familiar with like "Trouble Man", "Best of All Possible Worlds", "They Killed Him" and "Living Legend". But to hear them is an introduction to wonderful songwriting, something that country music lacks today. "On the Road Again" - what better way to end a show than with that catchy, fun road song.
The tape was shot at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum in 1990 and runs 98 minutes. There are 25 songs! So enjoy a great show that will never be duplicated again. .....Rizzo

Here We Go Again (with Limited Edition Poster) Review

Here We Go Again (with Limited Edition Poster)

When I first listened to "Here We Go Again", the first single off her second album of the same title, I pretty much felt that we have seen this Disney-driven actress/singer blossom to a talented musical artist.
It's one thing to see Demi Lovato shine on "Camp Rock" and her debut album "Don't Forget" but the singer has said that this album is "more me" and that includes a sound that incorporates a Jonas Brothers and John Mayer sound.
Inspired by John Mayer, The Jonas Brothers and Jon McLaughlin, Lovato has collaborated with these talents and the end result is a fantastic sophomore album that easily eclipses her debut album in musical production but also vocally.
It's one thing to have a solid track "Here We Go Again" but she continues that rock/pop excitement with tracks such as "Solo", "Got Dynamite" and "Everything You're Not".
But she shines in tracks such as her acoustic guitar track "Catch Me" which she solely wrote, shines in the John Mayer collaboration with "World of Chances", the upbeat "Stop the World" track which she wrote with Jonas Brothers Nick Jonas and "Falling Over Me" which she collaborated with Jon McLaughlin.
Overall, Lovato has distanced herself from other Disney talent turned music artists with her latest album "Here We Go Again". She can act but she can also sing and she has positioned herself to become one of the prominent young singers in the musical scene today.
This album is definitely recommended!

Demi Lovato had lofty goals for Here We Go Again: "I wanted not only to make a great album, but I also want my music to inspire people, to help them get through whatever they're going through in their lives. That's the ultimate goal with every piece of music I make." On Here We Go Again, with ultra-personal songs like the irresistible, buoyant title track, the hard-rockin', sultry "Got Dynamite" and confessional pop perfection of "Solo," Demi met--and exceeded--her goals. The multi-talented 16-year-old became a household name thanks to TV smashes--her starring roles in the Disney Channel sitcom "Sonny With a Chance" and movie "Camp Rock"--but, Demi says emphatically, "music is my first love."

This DVD is FANTASTIC!... This is a must-have for any true Glen Campbell fan and even if you weren't a big fan before viewing this....you'll love it!...Glen's performance is TERRIFIC!... ALL of his great hits are on here and Glen is in great form not to mention his amazing guitar playing skills. During one song, "The William Tell Overture", he actually plays the guitar on his head. From the moment I put this DVD into my player, I have been unable to stop playing it. The song selections are wonderful and Glen gives an enthusiastic performance on every song which he sings with such heartfelt emotion. The resolution is exceptional along with the 5.1 dolby digital surround sound. He is backed by the brilliantly wonderful South Dakota Orchestra and this is such a pleasure to listen to. Glen Campbell is like vintage wine.....he just gets better with age. An added bonus track is "Mac Arthur Park". I don't think I have ever heard this song sung more beautifully. Get this DVD.....you won't be disappointed :) It leaves you wanting more from this GREAT entertainer.

This is the dvd that came with the Poets and Pirates cd if you purchased it at Walmart. It's pretty good, but not as good as the free dvd that came with the Be as You Are cd. That one is a live q@a and acoustic show with Kenny. This one is a behind the scenes look at the 2007 Flip Flop Summer Tour. Kenny goes through each song from the Poets cd and explains why he likes them and why he recorded them. There is a great acoustic version of "Never Wanted Nothing More" on here while Kenny and the boys are sitting on the stage in Philly. There's also 3 live songs from various CMT award shows ("Summertime","Keg in the Closet" and "Beer in Mexico"). Worth getting if you're a fan, but remember it was a free item at one time. License to Chill Review

License to Chill
Average Reviews:

As a long time phan of Jimmy Buffett, I was curious about his new country collaboration. LICENSE TO CHILL does not disappoint.
All the voices on HEY, GOOD LOOKIN' do their part to make it a rousing success, sure to get plenty of air time. BOATS TO BUILD is reflective and Alan Jackson's soulfulness rounds it out perfectly.
The title cut will probably be the next "single" release. Jimmy and Kenny have a good time and I like the tune, but I think it could have been better. Couldn't say how, it just leaves me a little flat.
COAST OF CAROLINA, Jimmy's valentine to his wife, Jane, is about as sweet a love song as you're ever going to find.
The in your face PIECE OF WORK is a great romp with county's rebellious Toby Keith. If you don't smile when you hear it, you've never met a real life "Bubba".
ANYTHING, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE is another great love song. "Tomorrow may come. It usually does. Don't know what it brings to the two of us. I just want you to know what I'm ready to do . . . anything, anytime, anywhere for you." Awwwwwwwwwwww.
Martina McBride joins the fun for a look at birthdays in TRIP ROUND THE SUN. This was the only pairing that was missing chemistry . . . or, at least to my ears.
SIMPLY COMPLICATED is Jimmy's wink at a "my wife left, my dog died, someone stole my truck, and I'm outta beer" drinking song. Hysterical.
COASTAL CONFESSIONS is one of the buried treasures in this collection. It might not get airplay, but it's a great story. "I'm a tidal pool explorer from the days of my misspent youth. I believe that down on the beach where the seagulls preach is where the Chinese buried the truth. . . I'm a reader of the night sky and a singer of inordinate tunes. That's how I float across time, living way past my prime. . . " Genius.
If you're from (1) the 50's or even the early 60's and (2) the south, SEA OF HEARTBREAK might evoke memories of your parents going out on the town. All dressed up . . . a cocktail or two consumed. And the Hi-Fi playing the latest dance tune. Cha-Cha-Cha. George Strait is so smooth . . . he and Jimmy are near perfection. This is my favorite cut.
CONKY TONKIN' is cute, upbeat and makes you want to get in the car and drive down Highway 1 to Key West.
PLAYING THE LOSER AGAIN with Bill Withers reminds me of Merle Haggard. In a good way.
I haven't figured out WINDOW ON THE WORLD yet.
Nanci Griffith's weathered voice blends with Jimmy's on SOMEONE I USED TO LOVE, with great results.
I'm not a fan of SCARLET BEGONIAS, but I understand Jimmy's mother loved the song, so maybe it's his tribute to her.
His cover of Leon Russell's BACK TO THE ISLAND isn't as good as it was in Hawaii this past January, but then NOTHING will ever top that night under the Maui moon.
There's been a lot of discussion/debate about Jimmy's crossover to country. Oh, well. He done good.
Enjoy!

Wow! I have to say that Alabama has set a new standard for DVD!! I bought the "For The Record" DVD yesterday and I love it! This DVD alone is a reason to spend the money on a DVD player!! The commentary for all 42 songs is the BEST! It's also nice to have scrolling lyrics to all the songs if you need them and to get a glimpse behind the scenes look of the concert. It will take me a while to get through all the extras on the disk, but so far I love every one!! The addition of the "How Do You Fall In Love" video is a great little extra also. To everyone: This disk is a MUST HAVE for any Alabama fan!!

The Oak Ridge Boys Christmas Review

The Oak Ridge Boys Christmas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Oaks have recorded several Christmas albums but this was the first, recorded at the peak of their popularity in 1982. What makes this album different from so many others is the composition of the group - four men with very different voices who managed to harmonize well.
The contrasting voices mean that even standards like Silver bells, White Christmas, Silent night and O holy night sound distinctive. However, most of the songs here are either original or covers of obscure songs, like Eddy Raven's Thank God for kids.
The set begins with the infectious Jesus is born today (It is his birthday). This is followed by my favorite track, Christmas is painting the town, an up-tempo fun song featuring a children's chorus. Next comes another upbeat song, Christmas Carol, about a woman who enjoys singing Christmas songs. The tune reminds me of the Kenny Rogers classic, Coward of the county, but that's no bad thing and anyway it's a great song. Santa's song is another up-tempo, fun song. Happy Christmas eve, Thank god for kids, Little one and Mary Christmas are other great songs.
The mood is upbeat throughout and this is a great album for country fans that may also appeal to a wider public.

You get an excellent booklet of "liner notes", that provide detailed information about this concert, Jason, and some of his songs. This is a great one, and I highly recommend it. Thanks!!!!

On March 6, 2009, a sold out Knoxville (Tenn.) Coliseum crowd found out what millions of Jason Aldean fans already knew: he's a rising star and a damn fine entertainer. The concert was lights out and over-the-top. Those lucky enough to attend experienced not just an I-can't-wait-to-tell-myfriends- about-this show, but also benefited from the sum of years of hard work and determination. "Wide Open Live And More!" captures Jason Aldean at his rockin' country best. All the hits are here--"Amarillo Sky," "Why," "Hicktown," "Relentless," "She's Country," "Johnny Cash," "Laughed Until We Cried" and "Big Green Tractor"--and so are the live show favorites like "Wide Open," "I Break Everything I Touch" and "Asphalt Cowboy," among others. Not only does Jason sing his hits, he connects with his audience and offers them an escape, if only for the night. That's what real entertainers do.TRACK LISTING: 1. Wide Open 2. I Break Everything I Touch 3. Amarillo Sky 4. Why 5. Big Green Tractor 6. On My Highway 7. Drum Solo 8. Johnny Cash 9. Relentless 10. You're The Love I Wanna Be In 11. Laugh Until We Cried 12.
