Brian Setzer - Christmas Extravaganza (2005) Review

I saw the Brian Setzer Orchestra two years back when they did a Christmas show here in Wisconsin, and I'm seeing them this holiday season as well, so I figured this would be a great disc to buy. And was I ever right! This disc does a much better job of capturing the fun atmosphere and high energy music of the band than their previous DVD release did. The band sounds just as good as they do on both of their Christmas CD's, and watching the band mambers get into the music while playing it, makes it even more fun for the viewer. The highlight of the disc (and of their live show in general) is when they play the "Nutcracker Suite" for an encore. While often considered a "novelty" swing band, the Nutcracker really shows that all members of the band are world-class musicians first and foremost. It was good to see a few non-Christmas Setzer classics in the playlist, but "Rumble in Brighton" and "Fishnet Stockings" seem odd choices for a Christmas show. Overall, great Christmas fun for all viewers, and I highly recommend it!

Phantasmagorical: Master and Musician, Vol. 2 Review

The latest instrumental offering from Phil Keaggy shows us, once again, that their is no bottom to the well of Phil's music. The subtitle, "Master & Musician 2," is very appropriate: although Phil's music transcends any category or label, it is obvious to all who are familiar with him that he is the musician, playing music inspired by and written for his Master, and these pieces are worthy of Him. I cannot recommend this CD highly enough.

Upon the tail end of Phil Keaggy's most ambitious concert tour of his long and illustrious career - in which he has brought to life on stage his 1978 instrumental recording The Master & The Musician - Keaggy now releases his 2008 encore entitled Phantasmagorical: Master & Musician 2. Like the first, this album has musical scope and dimension that demonstrates Keaggy's mastery of melody within the ever-inventive musical signature guitars with a cornucopia of other instruments."It is special to me because I have some really good friends on the album," states Phil. "It is not like a solo thing like what I've done with other albums where I am playing most of the instruments. It's a nice stirring in of other musicians." One of the other musicians happens to be Phil's son, Ian. "My son is on the album; which in itself makes this a special album to me. We wrote a song on the album appropriately titled "Father and Son". I also co-wrote two songs with one of the members of The Master and Musician Band, Tom Shinness. With recorders, clarinets, strings, bass, upright bass - a variety of different kinds of sounds and instruments - this does reminds me of The Master and The Musician," reflects Phil. On the present nation-wide tour, Phil Keaggy closes his concert with one of the new songs from Phantasmagorical: Master & Musician 2 entitled "Forever to Joy". The audiences have responded with great enthusiasm recognizing that as good as Phil Keaggy was 30 years ago - he is only that much the better in 2008.

Oasis: Lord Don't Slow Me Down (2007) Review

Oasis: Lord Don't Slow Me Down (2007)

In Spring, 2005, Oasis released its 6th studio album "Don't Believe the Truth", and immediately went on the road for what seemed to be a never-ending tour around the world in support of the album. The tour eventually wound up a full year later. This DVD is the chronicle of that tour.
"Lord Don't Slow Me Down" is split up in 2 DCDs. On DVD 1 (105 min.) it brings a documentary of what it's like to be on the road for such a long tour, and if there is one word that I can think of, it's "slug", as in: it's a slug to be touring. The documentary shows the band going from the hotel or the tour bus to yet another airport and another concert venue. The guys play cards a lot, do endless media interviews and other promotions, and generally do a lot of waiting around. Fun is different, it seems to me. The best part here is the 10-15 min. Q&A bonus at the end with Noel, where he takes questions from the audience (not sure where or who), answering questions like what he thinks his most Beatles-esque song is (that would be "All Around the World", according to Noel).
On DVD2 (90 min.), it brings the full show of Oasis' home-coming show in Manchester in July 2005. It sounds great, but the set is heavy on tracks from the mediocre "Don't Believe the Truth" and even worse, the setlist is simply too predictable. With as rich a back-catalogue as Oasis has, surely the band could've uncovered some better songs to play? I saw Oasis twice on this tour, and the setlist was virtually identical. As to the bonus materials, there are 12 clips from fans who were at the show and used their cell phone or digicam to prove it. Not surprisingly, these clips are virtually unwatchable due to the poor sound and/or video quality. In all, "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" is pretty much a letdown for me. If you want to watch Oasis at its best live, I would much rather recommend 1996's "There and Then" concert video, which is miles better than this.

I have known Chris and Mike since they played in Mr. Crispy back in our high school days. I have been fortunate enough to watch two AAR concerts from on stage with them and this DVD is even more up close and personal than those experiences were. The quality of the video, sound, and editing are fantastic.

A great dance company demands equally great music. I was fortunate enough to see two live performances by the Bayanihan - one here in the US and the other in Manila. Both times I found it hard to resist singing or humming along to the music of my motherland.
This cd brings back those memories. It's a fine production. You can even hear the clapping of the bamboo poles in "Tinikling," much like you would in a live performance.
Too bad there is no video to accompany it, though.

Seven Turns Review

The Allman Brothers Band released their comeback album, Seven Turns, in 1990. The band was riding a wave of momentum as old fans were reminded of the band's powers with the release of their 4-CD box set retrospective, Dreams. In addition, a new whole audience discovered the band's greatness on their 1989 tour. Original members Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe were joined by guitarist Warren Haynes, keyboardist Johnny Neel, and bassist Allen Woody. The inclusion of both Haynes and Neel indicate an attempt to not only recreate the magic of the two-guitar lineup of Betts and Duane Allman but to also relive their popular Brothers and Sisters album in which Chuck Leavell's piano added another weapon to the band's impressive arsenal. The infusion of new blood is very apparent as the performances on Seven Turns show a classic band regaining their hunger. Allman certainly was feeling the vibe as his vocals on this album are arguably the best of his career. Whether it's on the smoking rocker "Good Clean Fun" or on the bluesy tracks "Low Down Dirty Mean" and "Gambler's Roll", Allman sounds reborn. "Let Me Ride" is a cool country rocker from Dickey Betts while "Shine It On" is a driving slice of southern rock. "True Gravity" is another strong jazz inflicted instrumental to add to their collection and is highlighted by Neel's impressive piano solo. The title track is a modern classic in the country rock vein with a memorable chorus and some cool slide guitar during the outro. The remaining tracks "It Ain't Over Yet" and "Loaded Dice" are also very good. All told, while Seven Turns is not on par with their best work, it's a very strong comeback and easily their best album since Brothers and Sisters.

Queensryche - Operation Livecrime (1991) Review

Queensryche - Operation Livecrime (1991)
Average Reviews:

This is a brilliant piece of work from one of the most alternative and outstanding hard rock bands - Queensryche. The album "Operation Mindcrime" (which was released in 1988), was a classic concept album and phenomenal not merely for the band itself but also in rock history. "Video Mindcrime" (which was released in 1989) was an excellent piece of storytelling putting the songs and music into visual image. "Operation Livecrime" was a further step ahead to put the story into live performance.
I bought the box set way back in 1991 which made up of a Vhs cassette, a booklet about the story behind the album and a CD. The moment I saw the DVD on display inside a shop last week, I just did not hesitate to buy it. And now, here we are, "Operation Livecrime" in DVD eventually.
The performance itself was immaculate. Every single member of the band did their respective part perfectly. They played every single song in the album. The partnership of Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton in guitar playing was second to none and irreplaceable but also one which supposedly every fan of the band would sadly miss. By no means I am playing down the role of Kelly Gray (who replaced Chris), himself being an outstanding guitarist on his own merits, however there is unfortunately something missing in the standard of performance (particularly live performance) of the band following the departure of Chris who had made such a huge contribution to the development of the band. There is no question about that.
There is however one aspect which I sadly noticed from the song "Suite Sister Mary". It seems that the vocal portion of Pamela Moore was recorded beforehand, that is she did not seem to have sung her lines live. I hope I am wrong.
In all, this DVD is definitely a must for every die hard Queensryche fan and serious fan of rock music. Just go ahead and buy it. Believe me, it is worth every single cent.

Skyscraper Review

Skyscraper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fans are split on David Lee Roth's second studio album "Skyscraper." Released in the spring of 1988, the album was a top-ten hit, platinum smash, and yielded the hit "Just like Paradise." Unfortunately for Dave, however, "Skyscraper" saw Dave lose a lot of fans. It was his last hit album before his commercial decline. Bassist Billy Sheehan even admits to hating this album. Far from being universally panned, however, some fans have stuck by "Skyscraper."
After leaving Van Halen, Roth's task was to create a new band, to create a new Van Halen. Competing with Van Halen, Roth employed Steve Vai (guitar), Billy Sheehan (bass), and Gregg Bissonette (drums). This lineup, known as the "Eat `Em and Smile Band" released the classic "Eat `Em and Smile" in the summer of 1986. For "Skyscraper," Roth added keyboardist Brett Tuggle.
Veteran Van Halen producer Ted Templeman was behind the helm for "Eat `Em and Smile." For his second album, Roth opted to produce the album himself with Steve Vai.
In some ways "Skyscraper" and "Eat `Em and Smile" are as different as night and day. "Eat `Em and Smile" was in some ways like a seventh Van Halen album. Roth basically took the best musicians he could find to replace Eddie, Alex and Michael, and rather successfully, emulated Van Halen's sound. "Eat `Em and Smile" is raw, organic and sounds live. "Skyscraper," by contrast, is far more polished, glossy and filled with overdubs. The addition of a keyboard player also took the band in a more commercial, pop direction. Some fans rejected the new sound and revolted. Billy Sheehan notes that he likes the raw demos of "Skyscraper" far more than the finished product.
It is interesting to note that while Van Halen found multi-platinum success and praise with their keyboard filled, overtly commercial "5150" (1986), Roth failed to do the same with "Skyscraper." Far from being a fan favorite, "Skyscraper" is noted as being the album in which Roth "jumped the shark."
All of this is a shame, because "Skyscraper" is a really good album. It is very glossy, but that's not really a bad thing. "Skyscraper" isn't a go-for-the-jugular hard-rock album in the vein of "Van Halen," (1978) and "Fair Warning" (1981). Rather, it's a sunny, California pop album. It's also surprisingly diverse and creative, something that a lot of fans and critics overlook. While "Skyscraper" isn't Roth's magnum opus, it's probably the most creative album he's done. Most importantly, the album works because the songs are well written, with good hooks and strong melodies.
The mid-tempo, off-beat "Knucklebones" gets the album off to a good start. With its ultra-glossy trimmings, the tone is set for the album. "Just like Paradise," was the album's huge smash. It's easy to see why this was picked as a single, as its hook is undeniable. It's easily as memorable as anything Van Halen was doing at the time with Sammy Hagar. "The Bottom Line" is a hard-rocker, in the vein of "Eat `Em and Smile" and classic Van Halen. The album takes a complete left turn for the album's avant-garde title track "Skyscraper." Although many fans and critics don't get it and label it "bizarre," this is one of Dave's most creative, ambitious, and intriguing songs. It's an odyssey, a sci-fi epic with psychedelic trimmings. You don't just listen to this song, you are thrust into it. The acoustic, melancholy "Damn Good" pays tribute to old friendships long gone. Did Dave have Van Halen in mind? Dave fans regard this as one of his best songs. It's rather surprising that it was left off his 1997 best of album. And what would a David Lee Roth album be without sexual innuendo? "Hot Dog and a Shake" picks up the pace and features some really cool solos. "Stand Up" is an arena-rock style anthem about standing up for yourself. The added keyboards and gloss work well for this song. "Hina" is one of Dave's most underrated songs. It's spacey and epic, with a lot of effects bombarding the senses, much like the title track. But whereas the title track is a sci-fi epic, "Hina" seems to be more like a space-age love song. Who is "Hina"? She remains a mystery. The album comes back to the ground with the infectious "Perfect Timing," a song that could have been a contender as a single. The closing "Two Fools a Minute" is pure Vegas, albeit with more a hard-rock edge. Although not the album's strongest cut, it's an interesting listen and a good way to close the album.
It's a shame that more people didn't recognize all the qualities and ideas that "Skyscraper" has to offer. It's a great hybrid of sunny-pop, hard-rock, and avant-garde experimentation.
If you're looking for straight-up, no-holds-bar rock n' roll, you may be disappointed with "Skyscraper." If you want something rocking, and a little off-center, try giving "Skyscraper" a try.

Satriani Live Review

Satriani Live
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a Satriani fan since his first album, and especially after the release of Surfing with the Alien. My one gripe was how static and simple the support parts in his compositions were, specifically, the drums and bass. More recently I've gained a greater appreciation of why this was so. First to highlight his incomparable ability to write an amazing guitar melody, and second (and more obviously) to highlight his amazing technical virtuosity. Nevertheless, this lacking in the support areas has been addressed continually over the years, for example, with the frequent use of the unbelievable Stuart Hamm on bass.
This live CD & DVD set is by far the most dramatic step forward in the area of support, and it is what makes this a definitive Satriani live CD/DVD. Specifically, the extended versions, the jam-outs (or jam-ins), which include some very interesting stretching on Joe's part also, highlight the dynamic nature of this big step.
In recent years, Joe has used the reliable backing of bassist Matt Bissonette & Satriani stalwart drummer Jeff Campitelli. And while Bissonette is a decent and very reliable musician, he is not by any means a mind-boggling technical virtuoso, as is the aforementioned Stuart Hamm. Likewise, Campitelli had never really pressed any buttons for me as a drummer, as my leanings in that area tend to be toward the likes of guys such as Neil Peart, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, etal. I have been to many G3 shows, and the energy level always seemed to be higher when Steve Vai was out with his amazing band (particularly with the likes of Billy Sheehan on bass in recent years, and Tony MacAlpine on Second Lead Guitar and Keyboards). Satriani was always reliable and perfect, but the energy never quite seemed to go through the roof, like in Vai's band.
Another G3 repeat offender, John Petrucci, guitar player for the current greatest band in the world, Dream theater, last toured with G3 with Dave LaRue on Bass and Dream Theater cohort Mike Portnoy on drums. It was much of the same thing - high energy. What would you expect from 2/3rd's of your members being Dream Theater guys?
I bring this up because now Dave LaRue is touring with Satriani and is the bass player on this live outing. And he is the one difference in the lineup. I have been familiar with LaRue's phenomenal abilities as a bass player for many years, having seen him play in the Steve Morse Band, the Dixie Dregs, as well as a previous G3 tour that Petrucci performed on as well. LaRue is not only a virtuoso who can stand toe to toe with any other bass player, but he is also a team player. When the required playing is to sit back and support & do the great support job Bissonette had done in recent years, he does it and he does it well. However, when it's time to stretch...
Then there'e Jeff Campitelli. Always has been a GOOD drummer. Well, we're hearing some stretching from him on this recording as well. This recording proves his abilities as an excellent drummer. His performance in the jam sections with LaRue and Satriani is superb.
Next there's rhythm guitarist Galen Henson. He fills in the spaces accurately, doesn't make mistakes and never gets in the way. A perfect shadow for all the holes that are hard for one guitarist, even Joe Satriani, to fill up.
And then Joe. Always amazing. But now that he's freed himself up a bit to stretch out and to play off of the other musicians more, and not always just in front of/on top of, however you want to say it, he is truly shining on another level.
I am a big fan of Rush. And one of the many great things you always notice about Rush is how well they play as an ensemble. They are all virtuosos, and they are virtuosic together, as a unit. Similarly, this ethic is displayed by Satriani's band on this live outing also.
The most important thing about this is that the wealth of new tracks from Super Colossal (one of his best CD's in years) are well performed, and the older, tried and true mainstay tracks have almost all been given a new spin, making this an ideal live performance.
Finally, Satriani's guitar tone is ridiculously amazing. This should be used to sell the JS model Ibanez & to sell whatever amp setup he is using.
Highlights: "Cool #9," "Circles" & "Always with me, Always with you." Especially the jamming: The jam-in on Cool #9 & the jam-outs on the other two tunes. For the newer songs, "One Robots Dream."
This is what I've always wanted to see Joe do, to stretch out. And now that he has done so, he's exceeded my expectations, which I did not think possible, because they were very high.

Back To Budokan (2009) Review

Back To Budokan (2009)

Here's my review without trying to spoil it for anybody. When I first heard Mr. Big back in the late 80's I was addicted to that rush from the start. I've seen them live and own all of their cd's (including their solos) and always thought they were some of the best musicians/artists in the business. 20 years later and I feel the same way! When Paul left and the bad went separate ways shortly after that it was a huge let down. They are top notch artists that truly love what they do. So when I heard they were getting back together in early 2009 with all 4 original members I was pumped. Only to find out they were going to pretty much tour in Japan and Europe. Their following in Japan is huge so I get that. Hopefully they will play some dates together here in the US. Doubtful, but I can only hope they show up at the House of Blues here in Cleveland soon. Now as far as this DVD is concerned, Mr. Big Back at the Budokan is amazing and unfortunately for now the only way to see their next time around tour. First off, all 4 members sound amazing and play their hearts out. What I really enjoy about this band is that they just jam and have fun. It helps they are all great at what they do including the vocal harmonies. The Double Human Capo and Smoke on the water in this set list proves they like to have a lot of fun and mix things up. They truly put on a great show and it shows they love playing in Japan. The audience is something I noticed. Nobody's drinking beer and falling all over the place. Everyone's by their seats, there's no screaming and yelling during the songs but the audience is very involved and sings along when prompted. The audio is great and the video is excellent with several cameras all over the place including some video from Paul's and Billy's guitar necks. Very cool! Pat Torpey and Billy Sheehan are spot on and Billy is just amazing to watch on Bass Guitar. Very talented! Eric Martin in my opinion has always been in my top 5 as far as singers, right up there with Paul Rogers, Freddie Mercury and Jim Morrison. Call me crazy, but man can Eric sing. There's something smooth yet a little abrasive, bluesy and rock all wrapped up into his voice that is just great and Eric sounds better than ever here. Just listen to the Live acoustic bonus footage on disc 2 and see for yourself. Now for Paul Gilbert. Let's face it, he could always play but it seems he has really grown over the last few years. Pick up his solo cd's titled Get out of my yard and Silence followed by a deafening roar and you'll be blown away. He is a blast to watch and rips it up on guitar. Paul plays fast, furious but stays sharp and hits those notes. He plays the drums on one song as well which is a treat to see. But Paul Gilbert is another musician that is high up there on my top guitarists list. This double DVD comes packaged nicely in a booklet style with great pictures and some basic info inside. Disc 1 has most of the show and disc 2 has the encores with some nice extras and bonus footage. This includes a very cool video of the song Next time Around with some video footage of the old days when they had hair down to their, well you know. It also has an acoustic performance at the Hard Rock that sounds awesome. The only negative, which is minor and had to be done for some reason is that you have to put in DVD 2 for the encores therefore the show doesn't run together. No big deal. I would recommend this DVD to any Mr. Big fan, no matter how Big, or little they are. I was lucky to get it at $14.99 here on Amazon and it's worth the money. I was also a little shocked there hasn't been a review yet, so I hope this helps in your decision.

Double DVD set recorded during the Next Time Around Tour in 2009. Mr. Big is a Rock supergroup that formed in 1988. The band is a quartet composed of Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitar), Billy Sheehan (bass), and Pat Torpey (drums). The band is noted especially for their excellent musicianship, intense live performances, and well-crafted songs. Prior to the formation of the group, each of the members already had a reputation of being virtuosos as well as established songwriters. Their songs were often marked with Eric Martin's strong lead vocals, four part band vocal harmonies, and a technical proficiency in all instruments. Their hits include 'To Be With You' (Billboard Hot 100 #1 single in 1991). This DVD features bonus material including an acoustic live performance. Frontiers. 2009.

Have Guitar, Will Travel, Joe Perrys second solo album was recorded in mid 2009 when Aerosmith had tons of downtime due to injuries and Steven Tylers lack of inspiration for the band. While it isn't as strong as his first solo album, or even as good as his best album with The Joe Perry Project, Have Guitar, Will Travel is still a fine rock n' roll record.
The lead single 'We've Got A long Way To Go' rocks like Aerosmith use to, 'Slingshot' rivals that of 'Walk On Down' and 'Combination' as Perrys greatest musical contribution. 'Somebodys Gonna Get (Their Head Kicked In Tonite)' reminds us why Perry is the legendary guitar God he is. 'Wooden Ships' which was dedicated to Les Paul is the guitar tour de force us Perry fanatics have been waiting for. 'Freedom' sounds rehashed but is still better than the majority of Aerosmiths out-put in the last 15 years.
Leaning mainly on his slide work, as does most of his work outside of Aerosmith Perry lets the world know that while Aerosmith may be down and out, the Admiral sure as hell ain't.

I actually LOVE the packaging, the DVD's on top of each other doesn't bother me (lots of em are like that these days). Continuum (Limited Edition) Review

Continuum (Limited Edition)
Average Reviews:

How many musicians have you ever heard coming out of the suburbs of Fairfield, Connecticut? If you are a John Mayer fan, you know at least one. Pigeonholed as a sensitive pop artist with the debut album, Room For Squares, Mayer shifted tack to a bluesier sound with his second studio release Heavier Things. Joining up with impresarios Steve Jordan and Pino Pallidino, Mayer broke out in full on blues mode with the live album Try! Though some dismissed him, Pallidino and Jordan don't play music with hacks, and anyone who heard the track "Good Love is on the Way" knows the boy can play. With his new studio album, the excellent Continuum, Mayer continues to demonstrate his impressive guitar chops, a more mature songwriting style, and a richer, deeper sound.

The socially conscious first single "Waiting for the World to Change" reminds that "it's hard to beat the system when you're standing at a distance." "I Don't Trust Myself" features a gorgeous guitar sound and some nice fretboard work while the outstanding track "Belief" showcases some strongly emotional lyrics: "we're never going to win the world..we're never gonna stop the war...Belief is what we are fighting for." The likely second single "Gravity" is a soft, slow blues jam on which Mayer plays some fantastic lead guitar. At his recent St Louis concert, all four of these songs blew the crowd away, generating more applause than "Daughters" or "No Such Thing." "The Heart of Life" has a clean, crisp, and spare production with layered harmonies and a subdued guitar making for an elegant track.

The solid track "Vultures" is slinky and moves to a smooth beat with its falsetto harmonies sounding surprisingly good. "Stop this Train" sounds like it came directly off Heavier Things. Mayer sings of broken hearts in the beautiful "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room," which chronicles the end of a relationship , "this is the deep and dying breath, this love we've been working on." Mayer attempts to cover Jimi Hendrix on "Bold as Love", and while the guitar work is amazingly strong his vocals aren't quite as well suited to Hendrix. An elegant ballad sure to make the ladies swoon is "Dreaming With a Broken Heart." A powerful guitar solo highlights "In Repair", and closing track "I'm Gonna Find Another You" has shades of the early Mayer song "Comfortable", but with the addition of horns and electric guitar.

The 12-track record, produced mostly by Mayer with support from Jordan and Pallidino, is an extremely strong, mature collection of songs that showcases Mayer's growth as an artist. His backing band is extremely tight, and the sonic values on ther record are exceptional. Most importantly, Mayer has grown as a songwriter, incorporating new depth and substance to his songs. Those who didn't give him a chance before would be well suited to check him out now. His live shows are incredible and the man has some serious guitar chops. Fans of his earlier pop sound may be a bit disappointed, but will likely adapt quickly based on the response of the young crowds at his concerts. Comparisons to legends like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton are premature, but if Mayer continues on the path he's on, he will have a great career worth following closely. Highly recommended.

For fans of Coco Montoya, this disc will come as a bit of a surprise. This is NOT a blues album. Let's face it, Montoya, as good as he is, has made the same guitar oriented blues/rock since the early 90's. This time around the guitar playing is terrific as always, but shall we say restrained. It's Montoya's underrated, superb vocals that are center stage. Backed by a crack band that includes Keb Mo playing tasty rhythm guitar as well as co-producing. This has much more of a soul/r & b vibe. Standout tracks include the cover of the Motown gem "The One Who Really Loves You". "Fannie Mae", featuring Rod and Honey Piazza offering their usual tasteful harp and piano work really pops. Also, the groove laden "Don't Go Makin' Plans" co-written by Little Feat's Paul Barrerre sounds both soulful and funky. It's about time Montoya gets his just due as a great vocalist. This is a nice change of pace, while it won't be for the blues purists, it sure does sound good.

"Coco Montoya is one of the reasons people mistakenly think blues is easy music to play. His fierce attack is so expert yet sounds so effortless that it makes you believe anyone armed with 12 bars and six strings can pull it off." -- Billboard "Few blues guitarists performing today can top the intensity of former John Mayall sideman Coco Montoya's torrid, Albert Collins-inspired attack. Shards of shivering, feedback-enhanced blue notes fly off the Southern California picker's ax and cut deep into the rhythm section's grooves." -- San Francisco Chronicle "Blistering contemporary blues ... piercing attack; funky, shivery guitar tones; and aggressive, soulful vocals." -- Blues Revue* Catalog has scanned well over 200,000 units! * Over the course of his 30-year career, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya's explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. * From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. * Averaging over 200 tour dates a year, Montoya packs clubs and theaters around the world. He has played major festivals, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, San Francisco Blues Festival, and Canada's International Jazz Festival * Has received glowing praise from the Blues Revue, Living Blues, Village Voice, Billboard, San Francisco Chronicle, Philadelphia Daily News and much more--all of which have ranked him among the best guitarists and singers on the blues scene.

I've heard the "Truce" album as well as the "BLT," and this is by far the best collaboration between Trower and Jack Bruce. His bass playing is still incredible, and he sounds wonderful on this "Seven Moons" CD.
Robin as usual is fantastic on guitar, but that's because he's one of the best, and I don't care what other people or critics have to say about him, he's in the same league and even better than some of the most famous guitarists ever, including Hendrix, Beck, Page, Clapton, you name them, Robin is right there with the best of them, but the sad thing is he's never got the recognition he deserves.
This is a great CD, not one bad track on it, and if you're a fan of Trower and Jack Bruce, I recommend you get it. It's much better than I had anticipated, and I'm very glad to have purchased it without ever hearing one complete song on it.

Vinyl LP pressing of this 2008 album from this duo consisting of British Rock legends Jack Bruce (Cream) and Robin Trower (Procol Harum). The duo made two joint recordings in the early 1980's, and teamed up again for this record, this time with British drummer Gary Husband (Level 42). What makes Seven Moons such a success is that Bruce and Trower each play to their strengths, Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's playing. They conjure a Power Rock trio sound which touches on Cream and Hendrix yet draws from their own deep, dark wells of experience.--This text refers to the Vinyl edition.

If you are a "true" Tab Benoit fan this is not what you are looking for. It is, however, a great all around "Lousiana Blues" (not cajun) CD. I prefer Tab and Tab alone! Enjoy!!

Joe Satriani: Satriani Live (2006) Review

Joe Satriani: Satriani Live (2006)
Average Reviews:

This Satriani live video event is less glitzy than "Live in San Francisco" from 2000. The Anaheim stage is sparse, not as many lights, and Joe and the guys just get down to business, which in this case involves performing most of the material from the 2006 album "Super Colossal," with only five older tunes thrown in for variety (Blue Dream, Cool #9, Summer Song, Potato Head, Extremist). The technique is stellar as always--you can count on that from Joe. But they must have used between eight and twelve cameras to film this concert, because they jump cut between them constantly. You don't stay with a single camera angle for any longer than three seconds, so it gets annoying. I'd have filmed a more "guitar fan" friendly video with just a single hand-held DVD cam. The whole idea should be to make Joe and his fingers the main attraction. Joe is certainly the focal point here, but the trouble is one second you're looking at him from overhead, the next you're looking at him from a distance, the next you're looking at him several feet away from the left...you get the idea. You're not gonna pick up a lot of Joe's guitar technique by studying this. It's just too jumpy, which is an insult to fans of instrumental rock, who by definition have shown over the years that we're not ADHD kids hooked on stutter-shot MTV production values. For God's sake, next time just take a camera--ONE camera--and train it on Joe for a while without moving. The sound is good here, but you'll get dizzy watching it. The clamshell DVD case should come with dramamine tablets! Good bonus features, though. A lot of content on this two DVD set for the price.
