If you're new to Van, start with his GREATEST HITS, VOL.1. If you're an established Van fan & looking for a live album that's nothing but Van, go with IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW. But if you're looking for a live album that's a collaborative effort with great guest artists & plenty of soloing by the band, this is the one. I was initially hesitant because I don't care for medleys or extended jams. I expected it to sound fragmented & disjointed, but the whole show flows naturally. Van does indeed prove himself to be a generous artist, allowing others plenty of time in the spotlight, & the show is all the more entertaining for it. The guest artists enhance the performance, rather than getting in the way. Brian Kennedy & Van's own daughter, Shana, are both amazing vocalists. Candy Dulfer is great on sax, as is Georgie Fame on organ. Van, himself, even seems to be enjoying the show, in contrast to his more straight-to-the-point approach on IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW. The back of the CD pretty much sums it up; ballads, blues, soul, funk & jazz (and I would add gospel). If you like these varied styles of music and a performer who's great at every one of them, don't hesitate to get this one.

A Woman's Heart: A Decade On

A Woman's Heart 1 and 2 introduced me to a number of wonderful Celtic artists, most notably Dolores Keane. (Like "Mary29" I was also prompted to go out and buy as many of her CD's as I could find.) Though I thoroughly enjoyed all of the songs on "A Decade On" I was completely blown away by "Mystic Lipstick" (written by Christy Moore and sung here by Maura O'Connell), quite possibly the most hauntingly beautiful song I've ever heard. I have to believe the woman in this song is actually Ireland ... "She keeps fools for counsel, she keeps the wig and gown. The cloth and the bloody warfare, the stars and stripes and crown. And still we pray for a better day now, God willing it's for the best. But I've just seen the harp on the penny with a dollar on (...)." The imagery and heartbreak of the lyrics are conveyed perfectly by Maura O'Connell's beautiful interpretation and voice. Worth every penny for this song alone, this is one CD that I'm going to be playing over and over. (And I'll soon be having some Maura O'Connell CD's to keep my Dolores Keane CD's company :-)

The Best of Tina Turner - Celebrate - DTS (2000) Review

The Best of Tina Turner - Celebrate - DTS (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This concert was filmed in London in November 1999 to celebrate six decades of Tina Turner on planet earth. The DVD has been available in Europe since June and finally it will be available to American fans this November. The show is not the same as the one she's currently touring North America with. The concert starts with the 1966 classic River Deep, Mountain High. After this landmark song she sings the title track of her most recent album "24-7". The high tempo continuous with a great version of her 1989 smash hit "Steamy Windows". Although her recent European no. 1 hit and US Billboard Dance chart top 3 single "When the heartache is over" is not really suitable for a live version she gives it a try here. For the next song, the UK hit single "Whatever you need", she is joined by the London Gospel Choir. Two ballads, "Don't leave me this way" and her 1983 comeback hit "Let's stay together" are next before she is joined again by the London Gospel Choir for probably the best track of the DVD : a superb version of "Talk to my heart", also taken from her most recent album "Twenty four seven". Tina gives everything she's got in her rocking version of "Hold on I'm coming"(unavailable elsewhere!) and is than joined by Bryan Adams for 2 duets. Of course the 1985 smash hit "It's only love" and the recent duet "Without you". Although her studio version of "All the woman" on "Twenty four seven" sounds rather weak, the live version here is one of the most sizzling tracks I've ever heard. The concert closes with her two classics "Nutbush City Limits" and 1989's European number 1 "The Best". The dvd also includes birthday dedications from such artists as : Bob Geldof, Al Green, Dolly Parton, Annie Lennox, Cher, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Phil Spector, PP Arnold, Bono, Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin and Sting + interview with the lady herself. The European dvd also included bonus material : Promo videos for when the heartache is over and "whatever you need" ( Superb Video! ) + a biography and a photo gallery. The best Turner video available to date !

THE IRISH TENORS: Home for Christmas Review

THE IRISH TENORS: Home for Christmas

Like millions of others I discovered the Irish Tenors through PBS. I promptly began looking for anything else by these wonderful performers and found this Cd. The music is soul-satisfying as the Christmas music is all sacred (the closest to secular is "Good King Wenceslas"). The arrangements are in turn glorious, tender, and sweet. "Suo Gan" by McDermott, ''Sweet Little Jesus Boy" and "The Wexford Carol" by Kearns are highlights. Of the ensemble pieces, "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World" stand out. But the crowning selection is "The Holy City." We are wearing the album out and it's only May. We'll have to have another copy for Christmas!

U2 Go Home - Live From Slane Castle (Limited Edition Packaging) (2002) Review

U2 Go Home - Live From Slane Castle (Limited Edition Packaging) (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Packaging
The first surprise is that the DVD is available in two different kinds of packaging. One version comes in the usual digipack-cover as we know it from the Boston DVD. Inside you find the booklet in the usual DVD upsize format. The second version, in contrast, comes in a suprising format: its a standard cd jewel case with a booklet in the same format. A pretty unusual format for a DVD and day-to-day customers might easily mix up this version with a normal audio CD.

The Content
The DVD contains the entire slane castle concert from September 1st. 'Mysterious Ways' is not part of the concert, but listed as a 'bonus track'. The reasons for this are still unknown. The concert without Mysterious Ways lasts 1:38h, the bonus track is 6:26 min long. Furthermore the DVD contains a remastered version of the 'Unforgettable Fire' Documentary, which has been available before on the 'The Unforgettable Fire Collection' VHS from 1985. Bonus-Features include the already mentioned Mysterious Ways track, a DVD-ROM section with screensavers, desktop wallpapers, an elevation tour calendar and weblinks, plus - for the the first time ever - the possibility to view 3 songs from the show in a 360° perspective.

The Concert
The most noticeable fact about this concert is the perfect mood the band was in on this evening. What seemed somewhat artificial and nervous in the Boston show, you can see much better here - the band enjoyed playing a second time in front of such a crowd at Slane Castle. Maybe it's the fact that it was not planned to release this concert for sale. Some incidents before the shows made both Slane concerts very emotional. The huge crowd brings a terrific spirit to the homes of all U2 fans, and the interaction with fans is much better here than in Boston.

Between songs Bono tells stories, plays games with fans and makes other kinds of jokes, all this makes the recording and U2 on this evening so likable. We pass on a song by song review, as we think that each viewer has to make up his own mind about this concert. We just want to point out that U2's mood and musical performance is outstanding. In comparision with all the other live videos this is the one which transports the feeling of a live concert best. All other videos tend to be stiff in some way or too well prepared. U2 at Slane Castle 2001 is the band U2 we want to see, they act with their hearts and have fun.
The Picture
The concert was recorded with many camera perspectives although Ned O'Hanlon said in an @U2.com interview that the expenses on that show were just a small fraction compared to the expenses for recording the Boston show. The spirit of the entire show is captured very well, shots from and of the audience are used very often and reflect its enthusiasm. The video format is 16:9, the pictures are sometimes very coarse, sometimes due to special effects, but this may have to do something with the light conditions during the shooting.
The Sound
This is the first time a U2 DVD is released with DTS sound, in addition to the PCM stereo format and DolbyDigital 5.1. But we think that for a normal user there is no relevant notable difference. Bonos voice is transferred very clearly via the centre speaker. The instruments are mixed to the front speakers, from the rear speakers you can notice quiet echoes, which are sometimes irritating. The audience is well mixed into the rear-speakers. There is no crystal clear mixing as can be found on DVDs like 'Eagles - Hell Freezes Over', where each instrument can be heard on a different channel. But maybe it's not comparable, because the Eagles show was a club-gig especially prepared for this, U2 in Slane was an open-air show which was, at the time of recording, not scheduled for a release.
The Extras
'The Unforgettable Fire' documentary
As mentioned before this is a remastered version of the 'Unforgettable Fire' documentary which follows the recordings of the album of the same name at Slane Castle in 1984. The video format is 4:3 and the documentary is 28 min long. The Documentary also includes the "Pride (In The Name of Love)" video. The picture quality is not the best, it's far away from DVD-quality.
Bonus-Track 'Mysterious Ways'
Once the track list of the DVD became public, many fans were shocked as the same song which was already missing on the Boston DVD was once again cut out. For still unknown reasons the song was taken out of the usual running order of the DVD and instead placed as a bonus track. It is not as was rumoured (and feared) a so called "easter egg", but a normal track which can easily be accessed via the main menu. (Remark: Producer Ned O'Hanlon said in a recent interview that the song just didn`t really fit into the show).
DVD-Rom Bonus Tracks
The most anticipated special, the 360° view of the concert, ends up being a Quicktime video of the three songs Elevation, Beautiful Day and Where The Streets Have No Name. Users have the possibility to spin around 360° degrees in real time at the touch of their mouse. A real high-end-special-feature feeling unfortunately doesn't come across due to the lack of quality which reminds one of a cheap webcam.
The second special feature is the 'Elevation tour diary calendar and clock'.
Furthermore two screensavers in red and blue are available - their style matching the artwork of the DVD. Nice, but not really exciting.
Four desktop motives are available to polish up your Windows system. They are available in 1024x768 and 800x600 resolution.
Finally the obligatory links to U2.com and NGOs that are supported by U2 are featured. Exclusive weblinks are unfortunately missing.
You can read the entire review with screenshots also in english at .....,..

Astral Weeks Live At the Hollywood Bowl Review

Astral Weeks Live At the Hollywood Bowl
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many who profess to love the music of Van Morrison have no idea that he made a CD called 'Astral Weeks'.
I can understand that. 'Astral Weeks' was released in 1968, to zero fanfare and indifferent sales. Over the years, those who heard it became evangelists for it: Elvis Costello called it "the most adventurous record made in the rock medium," and Steven Van Zandt, of Bruce Springsteen's band, said that "'Astral Weeks' was like a religion to us." Soon enough, it achieved cult status --- one of the most inventive and satisfying CDs ever recorded, known only to the in-crowd.
I'm not a music critic --- I don't even pretend to play one on the Internet --- but it bothers me that junk sells in the zillions while quality sits alone in the corner. In 2004, it seemed to me that a web site about The Best could bring overlooked gems like 'Astral Weeks' to a larger audience. So when I launched HeadButler.com, 'Astral Weeks' was one of my first reviews --- and, soon enough, the CD became the site's poster child, its 25-words-or-less creation myth.
And now it's back.
'
'Astral Weeks Live At the Hollywood Bowl' was recorded in November of 2008 before a predictably rabid audience. Morrison did not attempt to replicate the CD. That would have been impossible, for in concert he makes Dylan seem predictable. He will suddenly change words and tempo, abandon himself to a groove, call an abrupt halt --- and expect the band to read his mind.
I have seen Morrison several times over the years, and each time I walk away blinking at the mystery. He looks like a squat, stout, Irish postman and acts like an ill-tempered dictator. He may not hate the audience; maybe he just likes to show us his back. But when he opens his mouth, none of that matters.
If I ventured in the slipstream
Between the viaducts of your dreams
Where the mobile steel rims crack
And the ditch and the back roads stop
Could you find me
Would you kiss my eyes
And lay me down
In silence easy
To be born again
That's how the opening song begins, a love song set in urban decay. But the genius of Morrison --- the reason I see a line of connection from Blake to Wordsworth to Morrison --- is how quickly he reaches the exalted. In just a few verses, he's here:
Going up that Mountainside
Where the water runs crystal clear
And then, 40 years after the original, he adds this:
I believe I've transcended.
The rest of the performance is a demonstration of spiritual transcendence. This is not of great interest to many people who listen to music. They want a bouncy beat and a catchy lyric. So, a lot of the time, do I. But then I come to this:
Then you're high, on your high-flying cloud
Wrapped up in your magic shroud
As ecstasy surrounds you
This time it's found you.
It's not just the words that transcend. The band is open, loose, inventive; this music is subtle as jazz and heart-pounding as rock. And Morrison almost seems to be having a good time --- in his phrase, "stepping lightly, just like a ballerina."
What's in it for you? First, the message of the holy power of love: "You shall take me strongly in your arms again/And I will not remember that I ever felt pain." Then the aesthetic pleasure of hearing something great becoming, perhaps, even greater. And, personally, in a darkened room, late at night, a trip to the most exalted part of yourself.
What a wonderful world, with two astral weeks in it.

Recorded in 1968 when the Belfast-bred, blues-rock music legend Van Morrison was just 22 years old, Astral Weeks immediately received critical acclaim and continues to be cited as one of the greatest albums of the rock era. Subsequently the album has been ranked on numerous Best Albums of All Time lists, including #19 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and the 40th Greatest Album Ever on VH-1's list in 2003. Both Astral Weeks and Moondance (Morrison's next album) were inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame.Astral Weeks became a cult favorite and was seen almost as a religion to many artists. On November 7 and 8, 2008, four decades later, at the age 63, Van Morrison revisited Astral Weeks live in its entirety at the Hollywood Bowl, and delivered a jawdropping, awe-inspiring performance. The first half of the show featured Morrison playing timeless classics that have made him a legend, while the second half was the breathtaking performance of the Astral Weeks album.Van Morrison did not simply re-create what he did 40 years ago in a NY studio, but instead took the songs to a dramatically higher contemporary level. The jazz-rooted compositions of Astral Weeks are poetic stories of young love and the quest to find one's place in life. They were, and remain, ideal source material for musical improvisation that gives way to the sense of wonder for which Morrison has always striven.". . . transcendence is what Morrison has been after with his music from the beginning, and it's what he achieved frequently on Friday, when he played his watershed 1968 album Astral Weeks live in its entirety for the first time. The wondrous, youthful timbre of his voice then has evolved over the years into a richer, fuller instrument, with every bit of its remarkable elasticity very much intact." (L. A. Times)

Feet of Flames Review

Anyone who has ever attended Lord of the Dance or Feet of Flames knows two things...
1) The most amazing part of the show and music is the incredible speeds at which they can tap and....
2) Feet of Flames is a revamped version of Lord of the Dance with a few more explosions and a few new acts. Most of the music on both Lord of the Dance and Feet of Flames CD's omits the sounds of the dancers tap shoes, even more so in Feet of Flames. Is that not the point behind this type of dance?
My suggestions...
1) Purchase the Feet Of Flames DVD or the Lord of the Dance DVD from Amazon. You may not be able to listen to it in the car but you can play it for the music or plop yourself down and experience it again and again.
2)If you are still going to by the CD, pick up Lord of the Dance and skip Feet of Flames. There are only a few new items added and the Lord of the Dance CD contains a better selection of music.
3) Purchase the Feet of Flames DVD and instantly you will take note of how few songs are actually on the audio CD. I truly believe it should have been a two CD set to allow for all of the music from the show and separate versions with tap and without.

Reunion Review

Reunion

After 16 years apart, the group that first brought Irish folk music to North America reunited in 1984 for a tour that reminded everybody why they were so great. All the energy of 20 years before was present...in fact, it sounds like Liam, Pat and Tom Clancy, plus Tommy Makem, were performing like they'd never get a chance to sing again. The song selection is fabulous, Tom Clancy sounds *great* on Red-Haired Mary and Haul-Away Joe (if, as some reviewers have written, he was dying of cancer at this stage, he sure hid it well) and the musicianship is superb. Before there was a Chieftains, before there was a Wolfe Tones, even before there was a Dubliners...there was the Clancys and Makem. This may just be the single finest Irish folk album ever made.

Don't know what you got until it's taken from you.
What a band and what an album.
Again, you CAN'T go wrong purchasing this album.
From strength to strength.
1. Soldier Of Fortune- Typical loose and powerful Thin Lizzy. Love those guitars!
2. Bad Reputation - Listening to Scott Gorham play on Bad Reputation seals the deal.
3. Opium Trail - One of the few leads Brian Robertson plays. Solid.
4. South Bound - Incredible. One song I NEVER get tired of playing at loud levels
5. Dancing In The Moonlight - Surprisingly my least favorite track, and it's still great!
6. Killer Without A Cause - Powerful and pounding. Didn't Iron Maiden lift the riff on this one? Well, kinda : )
7. Downtown Sundown- Great tune, Slowing down the pace. Awesome bass work throughout.
8. That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart - A slight hiccup. Not bad but not great either.
9. Dear Lord- Phil exorcising his demons. Back to form again!
A solid chuck of 70's hard rock music.
Almost 30 yrs later this album shows the power and intensity these guys had.
Go get all of Thin Lizzy';s stuff and see what quality is all about.
Get hooked now! It's not too late!
Phil Lynott RIP. I wish we still had you with us. Your music has meant so much to so many people.

Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions Band: Live In Dublin (2007) Review

Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions Band: Live In Dublin (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mix in hot jazz, a bit of gospel, blues, zydeco, bluegrass and country. Season with Bruce Springsteen and bake at high temperature in an Irish oven for what is perhaps the tastiest concert video of 2007.
This is not your anthemic, rock-til-you-drop, Born-in-the-USA Bruce. That energy is still there, but directed here into the American folk songbook, music written between mid 19th to mid 20th century and reflecting the concerns of the agrarian and working class, from the Oklahoma farmer of My Oklahoma Home, to the slave Old Dan Tucker, to African American dock workers of Pay Me My Money Down. This music was appropriated in the 1950's and 60's by politically active singer/songwriters such as Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, and through them the music comes down to us in the 21st century through Springsteen.
Ten of the songs from the original 2006 Seeger Sessions disc are here, as are a handful of new numbers and songs from the extended Seeger Sessions release (How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live, When the Saints Go Marching In, This Little Light of Mine, American Land, Long Time Comin'), as well as new arrangements of some of Springsteen's less well-known songs (If I Should Fall Behind, Growing Up, Blinded By the Light, Atlantic City, and Highway Patrolman).
For long time fans the old songs in new-old clothes will be unrecognizable by the opening melody alone. It's not until Bruce starts singing that your mind begins racing to place that particular set of lyrics with a title. All of these newly outfitted tunes show some inventiveness, but the ones that worked best for me were If I Should Fall Behind and Highway Patrolman, quiet performances showcasing the lyrics, and Blinded By the Light, which like it's original rock incarnation is a wild, foot-stomping show closer.
In fact most of this show will have you tapping your feet and signing along. This is a joyous performance, and you can see that the musicians are enjoying themselves as much as the audience. If you have some room in front of your television, clear out that space and get ready to dance.
About the only downside to this release is that it's not a document of one evening, but a compilation of three. In itself that decision was not as critical as the one to delete all on stage banter, including song and band introductions, often one of the more enjoyable parts of any Springsteen show. The editing work is also noticeably poor at times with the action not in sync with the sound, presumably where the director chose to insert shots from nights other than those from which the sound was recorded.
Otherwise, this is a great DVD and watching it was the most fun I've had in front of the television in months.

After watching the Irish Tenors on PBS I immediately went out and bought the CD. I listen to it ever day and enjoy it now as much as I did the first time I heard it. I also have a tape that I listen to when I go walking on my lunch break. I loved Anthony Kearns' singing of "Boolavogue" and "Grace", Ronan Tynan's rendition of "The Town I Love So Well" and John McDermott's "The Old Man" and the "Voyage". When they sang "Spanish Lady" and "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?" they looked like they were really enjoying themselves and it made it fun to watch them. I also bought the video so not only can I enjoy the music but I can enjoy their performance as well. I was so hoping to see them when they come to the West Coast but alas I was disappointed to hear that they will not be making a stop in Canada. I hope they will visit us in the near future.
I hope another TV special is in the works. The power, passion, and beauty of their singing makes me want to hear more. They are truly a joy to listen to.

U2 Go Home - Live from Slane Castle (Jewel Case) (2002) Review

U2 Go Home - Live from Slane Castle (Jewel Case) (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
U2's performance at Slane Castle is unique in that it shows what the band members are like as people, and unlike a lot of their other concerts, this one relies almost completely on passion and musical performance rather than extravagent showmanship. This concert was destined to be filled with passion since it not only was set in the band's home turf, but also it was performed shortly after the death of Bob Hewson, Bono's father. What is truly amazing about this concert is how pleasant the band was feeling. In the Boston and 2005 Chicago concert, the band members rarely smiled, but in this one there is very few moments when they are not smiling. Even Adam Clayton smiles. Now on to the set list. The opening song ",Elevation," is easily one of the best opening tracks they could have picked. Unlike many of their songs, this one was designed to be a sing along and is the perfect to get the crowd ready. "Beautiful Day" is a cheerful song that features excellent back up vocals and guitar riffs from the Edge. "Until The End Of The World" is one of my favorites. This song just flat out rocks, and it rocks even more in an arena. When Bono and Edge act like buffalos and when Bono kicks Edge's guitar are about the only times we get a showy performance in this concert. "New Year's Day" features one of Adam's best performances and it's always nice to see and hear Edge play the piano. From there we move to the strangely moving performance of U2's first single ",Out Of Control." In this song, Bono introduces the band and thanks all the band's family members for helping them get to where they are today. In this version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," U2 actually seems Irish, for once. Bono's new lines and the repetition of "No More!" along with his enthusiastic voice give this song a new level of power and emotion. He also reads out the names of the 29 people killed in the Omagh terrorist attack to strengthen this song's message even more. Then we have a surprise appearence from Pop's "Wake Up Dead Man." This shorter and simpler version makes it five times better than the only average studio version. We then move from the dark and depressing "Wake Up Dead Man" to the upbeat and uplifting "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of." In this song, the Edge finally gets to showcase his beautiful vocal talents, which is a big bonus for an already excellent song. "Kite" is one of the band's most underrated songs of all time. This tribute to Bob Hewson is a song that can send shivers down your spine, and it is even more moving at this concert. Next, we get another surprise with the charming "Angel of Harlem." After that, we get an even bigger surprise with "Desire." Although not quite as loud and powerful as it's studio version, this song does by no means lack zeal. It is also nice to see Larry and Adam get to join the crowd and see Bono showcase his hermonica skills. Next, we have yet another Pop single ",Staring At The Sun." Fortunately, we have the acoustic version that was recorded on the "Please" single rather than the somewhat cheesy Pop version. Then we have another beautiful but underrated song ",All I Want Is You." This is where the concert turns into an incredibly emotional experience. After he dedicates this song to his wife Alley, Bono sings his heart out along with Edge playing some of his most beautiful riffs. I love the way Bono sings out of with all his anguish at the end of this song as it beautifully fades into "Where The Streets Have No Name." There is no way this song could be anything but amazing and the live sound along with the new lyrics allow this song to be heard the way it was meant to be. Then we get U2's anthem "Pride( In The Name Of Love). Bono's voice may not be as strong as it used to be here, but he still sings his heart out and gives a very passionate performance. From there, we move to "Bullet The Blue Sky." This song was designed to be performed live and Bono's speeches in this song really add to its strenth. Then we have the truly amazing "With Or Without You." What can say about this song other than it is beautiful beyond comprehension. Bono's added lyrics and Edge's extended guitar solo make this song even better than the unbelievable studio version. But the performance doesn't go down from here. Next up is my personal favorite "One." I struggled not to cry during this song. This song is amazing in the studio, but live it is twice as touching. Again, the band extends the song and adds lyrics which make it even more stunning. This is argueably the most beautiful song I have ever heard and to see the band perform it makes it so much better. Lastly, we have another song of encouragement ",Walk On." This song, while not quite as good of a closing as "40," is a fine way to end an amazing concert. Strangely enough, it is frequently left off the set list, so it is a treat to get to see it performed live. If you are even slightly a U2 fan, you should seriously consider buying this DVD. Believe me, it will make you appreciate the band and their songs so much more. It is much better than the Rattle and Hum and Boston shows and it is barely better than the Vertigo in Chicago show. It is truly an emotional and breath-taking concert that should be experienced by everyone with any descent taste in music.

Live & Dangerous Review

Live and Dangerous

Live and Dangerous arrived at my home via Air Mail today from Amazon UK, and I couldn't wait to get it into my DVD player. I was anxious about whether it was a Regionalized DVD (only Region 0 and Region 1 play in US DVD players), especially since the product description on the Amazon UK site suggested that it was Region 2...but it's not Region 2; it's Region 0 (worldwide).
This performance of the 1977 Live and Dangerous tour was captured at London's Rainbow Theatre. And this show should be held up not only as an example of the way a rock group should perform live, but also as an example for DVD music producers on how to deliver an excellent product.
The Live and Dangerous concert is all show. No indulgence by some videographer that thinks a viewer wants to see effects like cut to black and white, psyschedelic swirling pictures or other video effects. This was a very pleasant surprise considering that kind of video-malarkey was quite popular in the 70s.
The full screen picture has been completely restored and looks terrific. Most importantly, the video doesn't jump around every 4 seconds, so you really get to see the performance in a way that feels like you're back in '77 with a front row seat to the concert.
If you've got a surround system, you're in for a pounding Hard Rock experience. The sound has an amazing 5.1 DTS remix. If you've got an old DVD player or old surround system that doesn't decode DTS you're out of luck...there's no Dolby 5.1...Dolby Stereo is the only other choice besides DTS.
The Live and Dangerous line-up of Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson and Brian Downey define Thin Lizzy. And all of the guys are on for the Live and Dangerous show at The Rainbow. Lynott's high energy stage persona is incomparable. The guitarwork between Gorham and Robertson is legendary and it's played precisely at The Rainbow show. And Brian Downey's signature drumming is captured in all its glory.
For the classic Live and Dangerous Rainbow show you get the following set list:
1. "Rosalie"
2. "The Boys Are Back in Town"
3. "Emerald"
4. "Dancing in the Moonlight"
5. "Massacre"
6. "Still in Love With You" - The liner notes actually suggest that this song is "Call on Me", but The Boys describe each song track by track during the interview segment, and they confirm that it is, indeed, "Still in Love Wth You".
7. "Don't Believe a Word"
8. "Are You Ready"
9. "Sha La La"
10. "Baby Drives Me Crazy"
11. "Me and the Boys"
You also get Lizzy's 1983 "Farewell" concert (Robertson is out/John Sykes is in) from the UK's Regal Theatre; you get a selection of performances from the Top of the Pops television show from 1973 - 1979; and you get a 45 minute interview segment from the summer of 2007 with Robertson, Gorham and Downey.
All of the music on this DVD has been remastered in DTS; the interviews are stereo. Songs at The Regal overlap only with a few from Live and Dangerous as do some of the Top of the Pops selections. Between the two (aside from what's in the Live and Dangerous set), you get:
"Whiskey in the Jar"
"Jailbreak"
"Waiting for an Alibi"
"This is the One"
"Cold Sweat"
"The Sun Goes Down"
"Holy War"
"Baby Please Don't Go"
"Fighting My Way Back" (CD only)
"Wild One" (CD Only)
"Suicide" (CD Only)
(The liner notes of the booklet also suggest that "Cowboy Song" is included somewhere in the collection of tunes, but darned if I could find it.)
The packaging and accompanying booklet of the DVD are awesome. Plus you get a bonus CD of a 1975 concert recorded at Derby College in the UK. This is a pretty sweet package.
It's the Thin Lizzy DVD release we've all been waiting for. Any Lizzy fan will enjoy this disk immensely. There is no question here. Find a way to add this to your collection.

I appreciate the efforts the reviewers of the CD only version went to in order to explain and clarify the important elements of the historical context. I already read some books on this war after seeing the film One Man's Hero. The Rogue's March: John Riley and the St. Patrick's Battalion, 1846-48 (The Warriors)I love the chieftains and Mexican folk music so I knew I would like the music. I ordered the CD/DVD combo. I totally recommend this to anyone thinking about ordering the cd. because viewing the short videos and watching the musicians blend and play and dance together, is a surpringly touching joy to watch. It adds a extra depth of understanding to the listening experience. It is well worth the extra dollars in my humble opinion. thanks all.

The musical souls of two nations, Ireland and Mexico, are movingly brought to life in San Patricio, the latest international collaboration by six-time Grammy winners The Chieftains - the leading practitioners of Irish traditional music for the past four decades. The album features multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Ry Cooder, another multiple-Grammy winner, who co-produced with The Chieftains' Paddy Moloney. It tells the nearly forgotten story of the brave San Patricio battalion - a downtrodden group of Irish immigrant conscripts who deserted the U.S. Army in 1846 to fight on the Mexican side against the invading Yankees in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).

I can't believe that people are giving this low stars just because it does not have all of the songs from the concert DVD (which is a separate product altogether). You really should rate the CD on what it IS and what it is not.
Besides, executive producer Sharon Browne posted on their official web site that there will be a 2nd CD containing the "missing" songs that will be coming out in September, and featuring a bonus track of "Danny Boy."
So my review of the CD, as it IS....
Wonderful! If you are looking for traditional Irish music, this probably isn't the album for you, but if you are looking for five talented vocal performers coming together to produce a terrific contemporary album, then hold on to your seats! Each song is beautifully arranged and executed to perfection, producing a coherent album that embraces each of the strengths of the individual soloists.
Definitely recommended!

For Celtic Thunder, Sharon Browne has teamed up with Grammy-nominated Irish songwriting and composing veteran Phil Coulter to produce a show that includes an eclectic mix of songs ranging from the traditional "Mountains of Mourne" and "Come By the Hills" to international hits such as "Brothers in Arms" and "Desperado," as well as original compositions by Coulter, who has written hits for Elvis Presley ("My Boy") and the Bay City Rollers, and performed with Van Morrison, Tom Jones, and the Rolling Stones. The ensemble numbers in Celtic Thunder reflect the power of the vocalists, who range in age from 14 to 40, and feature songs that celebrate a common Celtic heritage.

Celtic Woman Review

I recently discovered Celtic Woman courtesy of my local PBS station that aired their performance that is already out on dvd. I just fell in love the mix of classical and celtic music. What really struck me was the clarity of the women's vocals were. Lisa, Chloe, Meav, and Orla sang with great restraint and did not go down the Celine Dion route and oversing each high note known to mankind. While I do think that Lisa and Meav has the strongest set of pipes, it does not mean that I think Chloe and Orla has thin, weak vocals. I just thought Lisa and Meav's vocals really stood out for me.
My most personal favorite song on the album is the gorgeous ballad "Someday" from Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame". I was truly moved by Chloe's performance when I saw her sing it on the PBS special. That song along is why I bought this cd. It is a beautiful song that sends chills down my spine every time I listen to it. Chloe also does a stunning job on "Walking in the Air". It is quite a contrast from the heavy metal version by Nightwish. Another favorite song is "Harry's Game" sung by Orla. Her vocals on this song also gives me the chills. I am so glad that "Si Do Mhaimeo i (The Wealthy Widow)" was included on the cd. It is one of my favorite songs from the PBS special. A very playful song. I wish I knew what the english translation were. Another favorite highlight for me on this album is their version of "You Raise Me Up". That really made the hair on my arms stand up tall. It really moved me emotionally, more so than Josh Groban's version. What I found rather interesting about the recorded version and the live version on the PBS special is that the recorded version sounded like it was sung strictly by Meav while the credits listed Meav, Lisa, Chloe and Orla. If you listened to this cd as much as I have (which is a few times a day), you can easily recognize Meav's delicate soprano vocals.
I wish that the cd also included Enya's "Marble Halls" and Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring". They were simply breathtaking. Other than that, I loved this entire cd. There was not a single song that I didn't like or felt should have been left out. I look forward to hearing more music from the women of Celtic Woman.

Celtic Thunder Christmas Review

I've been playing this CD constantly since I got it in the mail a couple days ago. The songs are so well done by the lads. I especially love Keith's versions of Last Christmas and All I Want for Christmas is you. He now owns those songs, but then, he is a wonderfully talented singer. I just love his voice and the emotional way he sings the lyrics. Also I want to say that I love George singing Going Home for Christmas. You can tell that Phil Coulter wrote this song especially for George. It fits him so well as does the other song he sings I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. The ensemble pieces are also terrific. The arrangement and sound of CT's version of Silent Night is outstanding. I will be going to their concert at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City and I can't wait to hear the Christmas half of the show! Also eagerly anticipating the DVD and PBS versions. Long may the thunder roll!!!
