Shockheaded Peter: A Junk Opera (1998 Original London Cast) Review

Shockheaded Peter: A Junk Opera (1998 Original London Cast)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Shockheaded Peter' is one of those delightful theatrical experiences which you literally want to take home and play over and over again, and the soundtrack to this macabre thespian jewel is about as close as you're ever going to get. Vocalist Martyn Jacques' perfectly-controlled falsetto voice borders on the edge of freakish, and accompanied by the sadistically amusing lyrics, and the bizarre orchestrations, The Tiger Lillies create the sinister and yet extremely hilarious atmosphere which is half of the show's success. The tunes are catchy if not always easy on the ear, but Jacque's remarkable crescendos more than make up for it. Along with the carnival-like accordion, the occasional drum solo and the oh-so-macabre hum of the cellist, 'Shockheaded Peter' is a marvellous creation of very dark musical satire. A word of warning, though- don't play it near the cat.

New Found Glory (10th Anniversary Edition) (w/ DVD) Review

Overall, a solid 'anniversary' release. I really can't say more than that. If you are an NFG fan, you'll want the demos on here and the liner notes. It's cool and very intriguing to hear where/what some of your more favorite songs by the band started out as and to read the bands take on this album all these years later. Overall, you can't go wrong buying this and reliving 2000 all over again.

For pop-punk, New Found Glory's self-titled album from 2000 helped define the genre, inspire the formation of bands everywhere, and pave the way for the success of groups such as Fall Out Boy.Now, a decade later, the CD+DVD "New Found Glory (10th Anniversary Edition)" brings together that original album, seven previously unreleased or rare bonus tracks, and the 2002 DVD documentary "The Story So Far," which featured all of the band's music videos to that date plus concert footage, interviews, and more. The package also includes revealing new liner notes from each band member and the album's producer Neal Avron (Fall Out Boy, Everclear, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard). One of the first bands to fuse the sensibility of emo, vocal production of pop and heavy riffs of hardcore, and bring it to the mainstream, New Found Glory formed in Coral Springs, Florida in 1997.After an indie EP and debut album, singer Jordan Pundik, lead guitarist Chad Gilbert, guitarist Steve Klein, bassist Ian Grushka, and drummer Cyrus Bolooki made their major label debut with the self-titled album in 2000.With its Top 20 Modern Rock hit "Hit Or Miss," the album was boosted by a tour with blink-182, sold-out headlining tours, and a spot on the Warped Tour, and eventually was certified gold. "New Found Glory (10th Anniversary Edition)" adds three previously unreleased demos (the album's "Better Off Dead" and "All About Her" and the never-issued "The Radio Song"), as well as the unreleased Jerry Finn mix of "Hit Or Miss," which marked the band's first time in a major studio with a name producer. The other extras are "So Many Ways" (a bonus on the album's Japanese version), "The Minute I Met You" (from the 2002 Clockstoppers soundtrack), and "Ex-Miss" (recorded for a KROQ/Los Angeles Christmas CD and heard on the Japanese version of 2002's follow-up album, "Sticks And Stones," which charted #4 Pop and also went gold). The DVD portion of "New Found Glory (10th Anniversary Edition)" offers the aptly-titled documentary "The Story So Far," with its band history, live performances, and videos for the album's "Dressed To Kill" and "Hit Or Miss" (two versions), and for the Sticks And Stones hits "Head On Collision" and "My Friends Over You."

Erasure - Hits The Videos (2003) Review

Erasure - Hits The Videos (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This outstanding two-disc DVD set released in 2003 is really a must-have for Erasure fans. Disc one contains thirty-five videos presented in chronological order (though one can of course "play all" or pick and choose which videos to watch). It commences with Who Needs Love Like That from 1985's debut album, Wonderland, and includes all twenty videos that were on 1992's Pop! VHS (for those unfamiliar with the VHS, it's the same track listing that's on the Pop! CD). It includes all four videos from Abba-esque and twleve videos from the albums Erasure has done since Pop!. For those interested, the final twelve videos are: Always, Run To The Sun, and I Love Saturday (from I Say I Say I Say); Stay With Me, Fingers & Thumbs, and Rock Me Gently (from Erasure); In My Arms, Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me, and Rain (from Rain); Freedom (from Loveboat); and Solsbury Hill and Make Me Smile (from Other People's Songs).
Disc two is loaded with extra features, and is every bit as enjoyable disc one. There are six promo "documentaries" made at the time of release of six of Erasure's albums. The "documentaries" are actually interviews with Vince Clarke and Andy Bell with clips of videos or live performances interspersed. The oldest interview is from 1991 (ostensibly to promote Chorus and clocking in at 24 minutes), and it is the only one not to include Andy. The next are from 1992 (Pop! at 30 minutes), 1994 (I Say I Say I Say at 26 minutes), 1995 (Erasure at 15 minutes), 1997 (Cowboy at 4 minutes), and 2003 (Hits! at 27 minutes). The 2003 interview is the only one not to include any video/performance clips. In the interviews, Vince and Andy talk about everything from their song writing, to their views on making videos and touring, to how they teamed up, to their personalities and their relationship with each other, and so on. Personally, I really enjoyed the interviews and am grateful to have them on this set.
Disc two also includes their debut performance of Sometimes on the UK's Top of the Pops from 1986; two alternate videos (an acoustic version of Solo Luminous, and a US version of In My Arms); a video from 1990 promoting Aids awareness; and live performances of five songs from five tours (Leave me to Bleed from 1987, A Little Respect from 1988, Supernature from 1989, Waiting for the Day from 1992, and Fingers & Thumbs from 1996). I've never seen Erasure live, and so really appreciated the inclusion of a few clips from their live tours. They've obviously put on some spectacular shows, and Andy has some wild costumes (Vince has his moments too!). It's an aspect of Erasure that one really doesn't get to see much of in the videos, and I think a lot of fans (myself included!) would love to see one of their concerts filmed for DVD release.
Finally, there are two bonus "hidden" clips on disc two. In the "Interview" section, press the left arrow and one of the background silhouettes becomes highlighted. Click enter and it plays a live performance Wooden Heart (the old Elvis song). In the "Rare Videos" section, press the right arrow and click enter for an alternate version of Oh L'Amour. Lastly, if you press the up arrow (and enter) whilst on the main menu, it plays the standard version of Who Needs Love Like That.
In conclusion, I highly, highly recommend this DVD set to anyone who enjoys the gorgeous, feel-good music of this outstanding, enormously talented British pop duo. It's definitely a collection to be watched and rewatched. I hope these guys will continue to make music for a long time yet--and that they will continue to release DVDs of videos, interviews and live performances in the future for those of us in North America who would otherwise never have a chance to see any of this material!

WOW! What a great CD! Bring back the 80's man! This CD has all of the songs from the earily 80's Break Dancing Era. I enjoyed Radioactivity and Tour De France the most. "Let's Jam, Let's Jam Radioactivity" and "Pal la vue misure, Tour De France Tour De France" (smile). I was a 3rd grade break dancing and pop locking when these songs were released back in 1983. Last, "Shackles" by R.J.'s Latest Arrival was the best break dance song ever written. This is the best CD I have ever purchased that has the 3 most popular break dance and pop locking songs from that time period. This is a must buy and I highly recommend this CD because it contains some of the songs and artist who pioneered Rap and Hip Hop with Electronic Beats, Drum machines, and Mixing and Scratching. "Shackles on my feet, won't let me dance, Shackles on my feet won't let me stand, turn up the music that has a nice beat, Turn it up loud and take these shackles off my feet." Can you see me break dancing I am so happy I finally found these song after years of searching for the lost 12 inch records and CDs(smile and jam with me)?

I spent some time reading the reviews here while waiting for my DVD to arrive. I was a little apprehensive after reading things like "arrogant", "condescending", "mean-spirited", expecting to see him being a real jerk. It was the complete opposite. David makes fun of people. THAT'S WHAT HE DOES.
To me, he comes across as being a calm, affable, even gentle person who is also raw and raunchy, with a take no prisoners attitude while telling stories/jokes.
While I saw some bits(that I don't remember being on the "Shutup You F****** Baby!" CD) that were funny, this DVD should NOT be your introduction to David Cross. Get his stand-up CDs first to get a feel for him, especially "It's Not Funny"...David Cross at his absolute funniest.

I dont useally do this. But their comes a time when you hear an album and you just feel compelled to talk about it. Looking For Lucky is one of those albums that just makes you say WOW after it finishes its last track and then go listen to it again. I am a huge hootie fan and I think this is their best album ever. Thats right. Ever. That includes Cracked Rear View, which until about three weeks ago (when Looking For Lucky hit stores) I thought was hootie masterpiece. Every Song on this album is incredable- From the electrifing "State Your Peace" to the solumn, but poinght "Waltz Into Me". Some Highlights include "Hey Siser Pretty" and "Free to Everyone". But by far the best song on the alubum is "Get Outta My Mind", an infectious pop tune with a courus that if giving the chance, could be the biggest hit they've had since "Only Wanna Be With You". The Bottom Line is that this album in the best Hootie and the Blowfish album ever and that includes Cracked Rear View. And thats sayin something.

Confessions on a Dance Floor Review

Confessions on a Dance Floor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MADONNA is back with her new album Confessions on a Dance Floor and it is an amazing album and one of her best!
HUNG UP - This is the first single off of the new album and is a huge hit in the clubs. The song has a sample from ABBA's song Gimme Gimme Gimme (which I have never heard) and has MADONNA singing about someone she is hung up on. The song has a very great groove and it's definitely the most commercial song on the album. With the chorus line "Every little thing that you say or do I'm HUNG UP, I'm hung up on you." and lines like "Ring , ring, ring goes the telephone, the lights are on but there's no one home" the song gets stuck in your mind and you find yourself singing these catchy lines. No Madonna song has as catchy lines since "INTO THE GROOVE" which had Madonna sing "At night I lock the doors and no one else can see". Very strong single that will keep the dance club crowd on there feet.
GET TOGETHER - This is a great up- beat song (inspired by Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You) with a very laid back trance like feel to it. The song has Madonna singing to a person she really likes asking "Do you believe in love at first sight?" Even if it's an illusion she states she don't care. "Can we get Together? I really, I really want to be with you. Come on check it out with me, I hope you, I hope you feel the same way too." Put some head-phones on and close your eyes and the Great retro dance beat along with the trance feel take you to another world.
SORRY - This is rumored to be one of the new singles from the album. Madonna sings "I don't want to hear, I don't want to know please don't say your SORRY." to someone she is probably never going to forgive. The songs chorus sounds similar to the bass line from The Jackson's' 1981 hit Can You Feel. Sure to be another huge club and commercial hit.
FUTURE LOVERS - This is one of my favorite songs on the album. This song also has a retro vibe to it with another trance like feel. This song has a lot of stuff going on musically and it is inspired by Giorgio Moroder/I feel Love by Donna Summer. The song has some spoken vocals for the first minute and a half, then it breaks out in to this awesome dance song. She sings "In the evidence of it's brilliance" talking about love. This song is going to be HUGE in the clubs.
I LOVE NEW YORK - Great dance song that has MADONNA telling us how much she loves NEW YORK and hinting towards George Bush and his home state. Singing, "If you don't like my attitude then you can just f off. Just go to Texas, isn't that where they golf." Very awesome dance song with a very punk rock feel to it. This is also rumored to be a single off of the new album.
LET IT WILL BE - this is a song that has a raw feel to it with a funky house groove and a retro 80's feel to it. This song sounds similar to the string opening (played on a synth) from her own song PAPA DON'T PREACH. This song has MADONNA singing lines like "Now I can tell you about success, about fame, about the rise and the fall, of all the stars in the sky, Don't it make you smile? Let it will Be. Just let it be. Won't you let it be?"
FORBIDDEN LOVE - This is one of the slowest dance songs on the album and one of the most beautiful. The song has computer generated, and vocoder style vocals and has another 80's feel to it. The song is the closest thing to a ballad on the album. MADONNA sings "Once upon a time there was a boy and there was a girl. Hearts that intertwined they lived in a different kind of world. Forbidden Love are we supposed to be together? Forbidden Love we seal are destiny forever."
JUMP - This is one of my other favorite tracks on this album. This song has a great beat and classic MADONNA vocals. This is one song that will make the club crowd JUMP and remind anyone of classic MADONNA. Madonna sings " We learned our lesson from the start my sisters and me. The only thing you can depend on is your family. Life's gonna drop you down like the limbs of a tree. It sways, and it swings and it bends until it makes you see. Are you ready to jump? Get ready to jump. Don't ever look back oh baby. Yes I'm ready to jump. Just take my hand, get ready to... are you ready?" This would be a great single and in some countries is expected to be released as a single.
HOW HIGH - This song has a great beat to it and is another song that has computer generated, and vocoder style vocals. This is a song that has lyrics (similar to "Drowned World/Substitute For Love) about Madonna analyzing and evaluating her fame and success. She sings "How HIGH are the stakes? How much fortune can you make? Should I carry on? Will it matter when I'm gone?" Another great song!
ISAAC - This is another beautiful song on the album. Despite the early controversy this song has spawned, this is s song that has a very beautiful Jewish chant with strings and guitars that envelope you and take you on an emotional journey. This has some of the most beautiful lyrics MADONNA has ever wrote. She sings "Wrestle with your darkness. Angels call your name. Can you hear what they are saying? Will You ever be the same?" People may not like this song because of the spiritual vibe, the Jewish chant, and because it is different, since some people don't like things that are different. I love this song!
PUSH ME - This is a great inspirational song that she probably wrote for her husband Guy. Very Uplifting beat that some people say samples a slowed down section from her own hit "LIKE A PRAYER." Madonna sings "You PUSH ME to go the extra mile. You push me when it's difficult to smile. You push me a better version of myself. You push me only you and no one else. You push me see the other pont of view. You push me when there's nothing else to do. You push me when I think I know it all. You push me when I stumble and I fall." This is a great song that reminds us all how much our lovers/partners love us and push us to be better.
LIKE IT OR NOT - This is another great song influenced by her own cover of her hit FEVER. This is for all those people who for what ever reason don't like MADONNA and always put her down. She once again analyzes herself and says, like it or not this is who I am. She sings: "You can call me a sinner, you can call me a saint. This is who I am, You can like it or not, You can love me or leave me, But I'm never going to stop." Awesome song and some great advice from a strong women who just keeps going on her journey no matter what people think of her. Cleverly this last song closes this beautiful future-disco album with an acoustic guitar. I have to say it's very sad to see some of these reviewers post reviews about how much they hate Madonna or like other artists better. The reviews they write have nothing to do with Madonna's new album and yet they give her 1 star all because they don't like her. After reading the reviews I can tell most of them have not even heard the album because the reviews they wrote are so far from what the songs are about. I guess MADONNA is still a huge threat to them and they have to post such hateful things about someone they don't like all because she is MADONNA. In a MADONNA like fashion I will not get bitter toward them, I will forgive them and ask that God Blesses each and every one of them.
And should any of you good people out there be the target like MADONNA and find yourself the victim of other people's bitterness, ignorance, smallness or insecurities; Remember, things could be worse. You could be one of them! MADONNA once again leads while the rest will follow. This is the best MADONNA album since RAY of Light!

Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 (2CD) Review

Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 (2CD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In 1975, the weight of the world was on young Bruce Springsteen's shoulders when he and the E Street Band headed for London for the very first time. Constant touring and rave reviews hadn't translated into record sales and his label, which had taken a gamble on him when they signed him in the first place, was about to dump him. Worse, every night he had to face skeptical crowds who wanted to see why critics kept calling this young ruffian from New Jersey "the future of rock and roll." Such was the case in 1975 when they walked out on the stage at the Hammersmith Odeon.
With everything on the line, Bruce and the boys played like they had nothing to lose. They were lean, young, and hungry. They played with heart. They played with passion. They played with urgency. And, on this night, they were untouchable. This CD captures that show in its entirety (a DVD of the show is included in the 30th Anniversary box set of Born To Run).
Few bands can match the versatility that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band display here. Witness the opening tender, wide-eyed rendition of "Thunder Road" followed by a feisty, swaggering version of "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out." Or "She's The One" which goes from a slow simmer to a full boil in a mere five minutes. Or "Born To Run," which Bruce plays with all of the blue-collar grit and youthful defiance that would later make the song a classic. Or how 'bout the "Detroit Medley," in which the band absolutely ROARS through Mitch Ryder's "Devil With A Blue Dress On," "Good Golly Miss Molly," and "Jenny Take a Ride"? He follows THAT with a heartbreaking reading of "For You" before revving things up again, ramrodding through a rollicking version of Gary U.S. Bonds' "Quarter To Three." Are you KIDDING me?
I didn't even mention the absolute insanity of the 17+ minute version of "Kitty's Back," in which Bruce and the guys go out of their freaking minds, did I? Heck, I didn't even mention "Jungleland," my favorite song in the entire Springsteen catalog. No, I didn't mention most of the songs here, because I want you to experience this show for yourself. PLEASE -- do yourself a favor and BUY THIS CD NOW! You won't regret it, I promise.
(By the way, some other reviewers were wondering about the absence of "Pretty Flamingo" from this CD. This show is from November 18, 1975 -- their first show in London. They played a second show at Hammersmith Odeon on November 24, 1975 and THAT was the show that contained "Pretty Flamingo." By most accounts, the second show was even better than the first, if you can imagine that, as Bruce performed 22 songs in nearly three hours.)

Road & The Radio Review

Road and The Radio

Kenny Chesney started out as a great country artist but over the last 3 albums he seemed to take a detour through Margaritaville leaving his country fans to hope that he was still on his way to his next country show. After hearing his latest release 'The Road and the Radio' it looks like the old Kenny is back. There are a couple songs that talk about sand and/or sun but they don't have the island feel that his last 3 albums have had. Personally I'm not a Jimmy Buffett fan so music that resembles it hasn't been my cup of tea. I thoroughly enjoy Kenny's latest work. If you're like me and you missed the old country Kenny you'll enjoy this cd. If you became a fan of Kenny's from his last 3 releases or you liked them better, I still think you'll like this release as while the sound may be more country, the feel is still laid back. Overall 5 stars and I feel an album all of his fans will enjoy.

Passion Talk Series: The Twelve Words Of Christmas (2010) Review

Passion Talk Series: The Twelve Words Of Christmas (2010)
Average Reviews:

Louie Giglio is a revolution in Biblical presentation. Sound Bible teaching, but such a fresh and hear-able form of delivery, makes this dynamic speaker worth listening to. He presents the same Christ Child story, first from the Bible's own words, "the Gospel unchanged," and then enlarges and expounds on it in the earthy, human, common language way that only Louie Giglio can present. He shares the difference that has been made for man in "The 12 Words of Christmas", not the 12 days. He states about the nativity day and location: "Nothing perfect about that night except the baby came." And then explains why.
The taping was done at Atlanta, in conjunction with a Chris Tomlin Christmas concert. I believe it was early in the tour for "Glory in the Highest: Christmas Songs of Worship", a CD released last year. The tour is continuing now, Christmas, 2010. The DVD runs almost an hour, an all region release, and has a background pianist playing, a shadow in the darker background and uncredited, which I suspect is the music of Tomlin. It adds to the dynamics of Giglio's sharing of "The Twelve Words of Christmas."
A great companion to Chris Tomlin's Christmas music CD, but it must be bought separately. This DVD has bonus material: About Louie Giglio; About Passion; More Info on the Passion Talk Series; and a booklet containing discussion questions.
This would be a great DVD to play for upper elementary students through senior worshipers at a church, followed by some of the discussion questions, or small group possibilities. And of course Christmas candy/cookies and assorted soft drinks. THE Christmas message, presented as fresh as it can be done, drawing emotion from the viewer, as well as hope for those needing inspiration. If your wondering what Christmas is all about, it's here in a DVD nutshell. A great stocking stuffer for a youth minister. Or family and friends who really need to hear the story of what the holiday is about. Or the worshiper who desires a fresh reading about the holy family's beginning.
Also, for an amazing presentation on the universe and God's creation, take a look at Louie Giglio in his DVD called "Indescribable". It is indescribable, you just have to see it to believe it.

Ozzy has made many great live DVD but I think this the best. This DVD captures the live power that Ozzy has. Many of the songs have been made in 80's and some even in 70's but they sound now as fresh as they sound then. Ozzy seems to enjoy the live concerts very much. Also Zakk Wylde and others are really well present in this concert. The solos and the songs are great. I was quite disappointment on "Live & Loud" but this DVD has a place in my metal heart. Great live concert!

Mad Dogs & Englishmen Review

Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are those that insist that "Mad Dogs & Englishmen," the 1970 record of the Joe Cocker tour, is the high point in the music career of the gravely voiced soul singer. I can see the reasons for the argument, but even with his once powerful voice worn away by alcohol abuse there is something to be said for his sense of phrasing in the later years. He still came up with a great howl on "When the Night Comes" and if I am only allowed to listen to one Joe Cocker track for the rest of eternity I am going to take the monster 9:27 long live version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" that is on "The Best of Joe Cocker." That being said, if you are talking about an entire album, then "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" is the one to go with, because Cocker live was always better than Cocker in the studio, not that this pronouncement is exactly news to anyone.
It helps to set the scene for the 1970 tour. Two years earlier Cocker had hit the top of the charts in the U.K. with his cover of the Beatles' "A Little Help From My Friends," and when he sang the song at Woodstock he made a name for himself in the colonies. Leon Russell became Cocker's musical director and provided a second hit in England with "Delta Lady." Two albums came out in 1969, "With a Little Help From My Friends" and "Joe Cocker!", both of which went gold. What makes this live album so amazing is that Cocker only sings one song form his first album (and it is not even the title cut but "Feelin' Alright") and only three cuts from the second: "Bird on a Wire," "Delta Lady" and another in a series of classic Beatles coves, "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window." So out of 16 songs on the album, a dozen of them are "new" material for Cocker.
Of course such things are a lot easier when you are a cover artist rather than a singer-songwriter. This frees Cocker to come up with songs by the Rolling Stones ("Honky Tonk Woman") and Bob Dylan ("Girl From the North Country"). But whatever the songs a lot of the credit for Cocker's career and this album have to go to Leon Russell and Chris Stainton for coming up with the greatest live arrangements on the Sixties (Give me George Martin in the studio and Leon Russell). The concert was recorded at New York's Filmore East in the spring of 1970 (as a film as well as an album). There were almost two dozen musicians involved, giving a whole new meaning to Noel Coward's famous song title, and the result is the definitive mixture of rock 'n' roll soul with a big brassy sound and Russell's awesome piano playing behind Cocker's powerful vocals.
Part of the impressive result was a couple of Cocker standards in "Cry Me a River" and "The Letter." It was the cover of the later, originally by the Box Tops, that broke Cocker into the U.S. Top 10 for the first time. Other standout tracks include the slower "Superstar" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long, " along with "Give Peace a Chance." Of course, "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" went gold as well as if there are those who want to argue that Joe Cocker's first three albums were his best, it is hard to argue with them. My preference for this one as the best of the lot is based almost on much as it being a double-album as it being live, but the live part is still the key consideration.

Sting in the Tail Review

Sting in the Tail

Originally formed in Hanover, Germany in the late 60s, Scorpions have over 40 years of experience as a band with some incredible hits under their belts. With their first album dropping in 1972, Scorpions are now in their 38th year of recorded material and it is reported to be their last. As the first track, "Raised on Rock," opens, it is easy to point out similarities to one of their biggest hits, 1984's "Rock You Like a Hurricane." Don't think that's because Klaus Maine, Rudolph Schenker, Matthias Jabs, and company have run out of ideas; on the contrary.
They simply tip their hats to the sounds that made them rock royalty while pursuing a conclusion worthy of their storied career. With Sting in the Tail, Scorpions have released an album of classic rock that stands with some of their finest releases of the past.
Although hints of their hits can be heard throughout, Sting in the Tail does an excellent job of combining the old with the new. The production is crisp and clean with an emphasis clearly placed on modern compression techniques that maximize the volume potential of the band, but the music still has that classic vibe that made them famous to begin with.
Meine's vocals are shockingly present and don't appear to have lost any of their hard hitting ability. Singers typically show their age on ballads, but when Scorpions slow things down on "Lorelei" and "Sly," Meine's voice soars over the mix without ever sacrificing a high note. Both power ballads utilize the same gradual build in dynamic throughout that is so characteristic of their sound in the eighties. "Lorelei" even makes use of the classic call and response harmonization on the chorus fans of the classic rock genre adore.
Scorpions continue to be the masters of a decade that has long since passed. For that reason, it is unlikely Sting in the Tail will make much noise on the charts, but for longtime fans, this will be the goodbye they have always craved. For those new to Scorpions, I highly recommend giving Love at First Sting a play through first, but Sting in the Tail is a worthy competitor.

Mermaid Avenue Review

Every once in a while and usually out of the blue, we are graced with an album that defies time and genre, the type of music that we will be listening to when Mars is terraformed; Mermaid Avenue is just such an album. It is the diamond in the careers of both Bragg and Wilco. Whether it's the boisterous "Walt Whitman's Neice," the thumping drums of "California Stars," or the country folk of "Minor Key," this album offers a richness of sound that will have listeners licking their chops. The innocence of tracks like "Hoodoo Voodoo" or "Ingrid Bergman" creates a fragile balance with the spate of darker songs, like "One by One," which sounds as if pulled from a deep burrow of desire in Woody Guthrie's soul and recalls the sweet yearning of Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay." While the album delivers consistently good music, each song is so different from its predecessor that even the most casual listener's attention is unlikely to wander. Nominated for a Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy, "Mermaid Avenue" is a priceless example of Guthrie's achievement at the dawn of a new century.

Delicate Sound of Thunder Review

Delicate Sound of Thunder

I believe there is something of a generation gap in terms of Pink Floyd fans' appreciation of this live double album released in 1988. Older fans who experienced all of the band's genius in the 1960s and 1970s may have had a little trouble adjusting to the reconstitution of the band (without Roger Waters) in the 1980s. As for me, I had only recently discovered the band at that time - 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason was actually the first Floyd CD I bought. I had seen The Wall and was somewhat familiar with some of the classic cuts from Dark Side of the Moon, but Delicate Sound of Thunder was essentially my first real introduction to the musical mystique of Pink Floyd. I happen to much prefer Roger Waters' vocals on vintage Floyd tracks, but I am still impressed with David Gilmour's vocals and the energy with which Waters' former band mates resurrected Pink Floyd after the bitter breakup of the band. The fact that I really learned such songs as Comfortably Numb and Time from Gilmour's versions on this live album actually allows me to appreciate Waters' original vocals even more while never looking down on these recordings as inferior versions. Had I been a fan of Pink Floyd since the beginning (and I would have been if I had been born a decade or two earlier), I imagine I would have had trouble adjusting to the Waters-less ensemble showcasing their wares here. The only unhappy feelings I personally have toward this album come from the fact that I didn't get the chance to see them perform in the concert tour from which this music is derived.
The fifteen tracks included on these two CDs represent a mix of the new and the timeless. Five of the ten songs from 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason are included: Learning to Fly, The Dogs of War, On the Turning Away, Yet Another Movie, and Sorrow. I happen to think AMLR was a great album, and the live performances of these songs really do them justice; On the Turning Away is a particularly incredible live track.
Of course, one's attention is always fixed most closely on the timeless Pink Floyd songs. Dark Side of the Moon is represented here by three songs: Time, Money, and Us and Them (of course, the second CD in 1995's Pulse contains a live performance of the entire Dark Side of the Moon album). The backup singers do get to be a little annoying on the drawn-out version of Money. Wish You Were Here supplies its own title track, an always-welcome addition to the fun, as well as this album's opening number Shine on You Crazy Diamond. One of These Days stands out as the only purely instrumental track on the double album. I am not a big fan of extended instrumental pieces, but Pink Floyd prove to be the exception to the rule - largely due to Gilmour's devastatingly impressive guitar work. Shine on You Crazy Diamond always reminds me a little bit of the old Doctor Who theme song, and that bit of nostalgia only makes me enjoy the music even more. This second disc closes with three songs from The Wall: the ever-popular Another Brick in the Wall Part II, Comfortably Numb (featuring a particularly scintillating guitar solo by Gilmour), and Run Like Hell.
Delicate Sound of Thunder has, in some ways, been superseded by 1995's Pulse double live album - but a number of the timeless tracks found here on Delicate Sound of Thunder cannot be found there. I can understand why some Floyd fanatics aren't overly impressed with this 1988 release, but a newly-reconstituted Pink Floyd (sans Waters) at slightly less than their best is still way, way better than almost everything else out there. The fact that Gilmour and the guys could deliver such quality performances of songs so intimately associated with Roger Waters proves just how timeless the music of Pink Floyd is.

Out of print in the U.S.! Delicate Sound Of Thunder is a 1988 two CD live document of the band's successful Momentary Lapse Of Reason tour. Apart from playing songs from that album, the band generously offer up a host of old classics as well. Though Roger Waters had departed the band, the remaining trio (David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason) carried on with the band name, releasing successful albums and undertaking record-breaking tours. The Delicate Sound Of Thunder remains one of their most popular live releases. EMI.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Time Well Wasted Review

Paisley has been turning out solid country tunes for albums now but he seems to have fleeting moments on radio sometimes. On this album, Paisley seems to be at his sharpest. He takes on fast tracks "Alcohol" & "You Need a Man Around Here" and lays on the humor and great song writing without killing traditonal country roots -- take a note Keith Urban.
There are the romance ballads such as "The World" & "Flowers" that I hope are hits on Radio and video format as well.
But there is a single song on here that is worth the purhcase alone. The heartbreaking ballad, "When I Get Where I'm Going" has to be one of the most beautiful songs of the last 20 years. If this song doesn't warm you up then there is no hope. It guests, Dolly Parton -- who has been turning out pure Bluegrass heaven on her last three discs. Their vocal harmonies and soaring melodies is a amazing. I can't recommend the disc enough.
Excellent.
