Skaggs Family Christmas Review

Skaggs Family Christmas

Playing Time - 46:19 -- After hearing Volume One of Skaggs Family Christmas, "yule" need to run right down to your local CD store and pick up copies for all your friends and family members. This album is a great combination of easy-listening country and bluegrass treatments of Christmas standards and some less oft-heard material too. The bright, breezy recording includes Ricky Skaggs, members of Kentucky Thunder, The Whites, and many third generation family members. Sister/brother Molly and Luke Skaggs, along with their cousin Rachel White, make this a joyous family event. I was quite impressed by these young folks' vocal (and Molly's dulcimer) abilities.
Besides the standard bluegrass instruments, the arrangements are brought to life with tasteful whistle, percussion, accordion, dulcimer, viola, mandola, piano, bouzouki and strings. Sharon White's angelic lead vocals on "Love Came Gently" give us a rendition of soaring beauty. Nashville String Machine provides the smooth layer of synthesized wintery atmosphere. Cheryl White's voice is also a perfect gift for the holidays. The mid-set pickup is "Hangin' Round the Mistletoe," a cute and catchy song featuring Buck White's lead vocal and piano. An instrumental "Deck the Halls" is rather short at 2 minutes, but the band's hot breaks, even though conservatively confined to the song's melody, will melt even the coldest icicle.
One interesting selection is Buck White's recitation of "The Christmas Guest" (words by Grandpa Jones and Bill Walker). Gospel bluegrass collections occasionally have recitations, such as Ralph Stanley's moving story by Dean Deel, "On a High, High Mountain," about a friend's passing of his mother and father. On a Christmas album, however, a 5-minute recitation could be slightly distracting to some families spinning the CD for background music at holiday reunions. However, the poetic story is worth listening to closely. After seeing a vision in a dream, a man prepares for the Lord to be his Christmas guest. While seemingly disappointed by His non-appearance, the man discovers that He actually did appear as a beggar, hungry woman, and lonely child who were all met with the man's love and warmth on Christmas day.
In keeping with Skaggs Family's great support of the bluegrass genre, it might have been nice to tap the traditional bluegrass repertoire for some material. Granted there might not be a lot of Christmas bluegrass material, but imagine contemporary Skaggs Family arrangements of Ralph Stanley's "Jesus Christ is Born," "Holiday Pickin'" or perhaps "Christmas is Near." Or better yet how about a cover of Virginia Stauffer's "That's Christmas Time to Me," partly in tribute to Ricky's mentor, Bill Monroe? All in all, "A Skaggs Family Christmas" is an inspirational delight. This musical treasure has very warm and pleasant sounds for families at fireside during the holiday season. Thanks to the Skaggs Family for sharing their music, love, and warmth during a very religious and emotional time of the year. CMT will host a Skaggs Family Christmas television special on December 10, 2005, with several repeats of it throughout the holidays. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Judds Reunion: Live Review

Judds Reunion: Live

In the younger Judd days, Wynonna was kind of the "Silent' partner with the great voice, and the focus tended to be on Naomi. (Even though, the movie portrayal of Wynonna as a little girl depicted a sarcastic, hilarious little hellion). Now that she's all grown up, Wynonna has come into her own and developed an "intrigue" and "fascination" as incredible as Naomi's, and her voice (always wonderful) has strengthened and become even more powerful.
This was the "concert" you never wanted to end. They sang all their best songs, and it's as if they reach out and send love and compassion and hope through their music and through their lives.
I am fighting a terminal illness, and I have learned one important thing from the Judds. I remember in the movie when the Judds were starting out and getting rejected by everyone, and they were discouraged, Wynonna said to her mother, "What are the chances of our making it anyway--about a billion to one?" Naomi answered her and said, "Then, we'll be that one!" I never forgot it. When a doctor told me my chances were about a million to one, I remembered Naomi and said, "Then I'll be that one!" These two women have given us all so much in so many ways. I read somewhere that Naomi struggles because she wants to "save" everybody, and she can't. Maybe not, but she can certainly give people the "Hope" and the "Faith" in God to save themselves, and she has done that. God bless these two wonderful women!

I have been an Emmylou fan since I first saw her playing small bars here in Washington, D.C. and she just keeps getting better. This is by far her most musically adventurous band coming on the heels of her Wrecking Ball recording. Since I missed the Spyboy tour this is the next best thing. Emmylou sings with more power and soul than ever and Buddy Miller is a truly unique musician. If you like the Spyboy recording this is a must.

When I first listened to "Here We Go Again", the first single off her second album of the same title, I pretty much felt that we have seen this Disney-driven actress/singer blossom to a talented musical artist.
It's one thing to see Demi Lovato shine on "Camp Rock" and her debut album "Don't Forget" but the singer has said that this album is "more me" and that includes a sound that incorporates a Jonas Brothers and John Mayer sound.
Inspired by John Mayer, The Jonas Brothers and Jon McLaughlin, Lovato has collaborated with these talents and the end result is a fantastic sophomore album that easily eclipses her debut album in musical production but also vocally.
It's one thing to have a solid track "Here We Go Again" but she continues that rock/pop excitement with tracks such as "Solo", "Got Dynamite" and "Everything You're Not".
But she shines in tracks such as her acoustic guitar track "Catch Me" which she solely wrote, shines in the John Mayer collaboration with "World of Chances", the upbeat "Stop the World" track which she wrote with Jonas Brothers Nick Jonas and "Falling Over Me" which she collaborated with Jon McLaughlin.
Overall, Lovato has distanced herself from other Disney talent turned music artists with her latest album "Here We Go Again". She can act but she can also sing and she has positioned herself to become one of the prominent young singers in the musical scene today.
This album is definitely recommended!

Includes limited edition Demi Lovato poster! Demi Lovato had lofty goals for Here We Go Again: "I wanted not only to make a great album, but I also want my music to inspire people, to help them get through whatever they're going through in their lives. That's the ultimate goal with every piece of music I make." On Here We Go Again, with ultra-personal songs like the irresistible, buoyant title track, the hard-rockin', sultry "Got Dynamite" and confessional pop perfection of "Solo," Demi met--and exceeded--her goals. The multi-talented 16-year-old became a household name thanks to TV smashes--her starring roles in the Disney Channel sitcom "Sonny With a Chance" and movie "Camp Rock"--but, Demi says emphatically, "music is my first love."

This is the Judds at their absolute best. Mother and daughter, sharing the end of a professional union and putting on the show of their lives! This video is both touching as well as entertaining and if you don't end up crying when they exchange their professional "good-bye" then you're not a true "Judds" fan. Excellent viewing...

Love Can Build a Bridge Review

Love Can Build a Bridge
Average Reviews:

Prime Cuts: Are the Roses Not Blooming, Love Can Build a Bridge, Talk About Love
Country music has never been conducive to duos. Save for Brooks and Dunn, JJ White, Thrasher Shriver, the Kinleys, the Larkins, Corbin/Hanner, Darryl and Don Ellis, the Lynns, Brother Phelps, Turner Nichols have come and gone without causing much of a dent on the genre's charts. Not so with the Judds. Right through the 80s, this mother and daughter duo was a mainstay in country music: winning every conceivable awards for vocal duos, frequented the lofty heights of the country charts and their concerts were of blockbuster success. Part of their indelible success can be attributed to the fact that you could never pigeonhole Naomi and Wynonna Judd. The Judds could very well be the poster child of how to balance between bluesy romp, rocking youthful pop and bucolic down home balladry. "Love Can Build a Bridge," their final studio album, is evidence.
As the delectable jazzy piano, introduced a haunting Wynonna Judd on this ferocious leadoff single, "Born to Be Blue" opens the album at a promising start. The delightful bluesy riffs are again used to its advantage in "Rompin' Stompin' Blue." Naomi Judd's sassy harmony certainly augments Wynonna's full bodied Bonnie Riatt-type delivery very nicely on this track. Speaking of Riatt, the diva makes an appearance on this track with her excellent slide guitar playing. "This Country's Rockin'" as the title suggests, continues to find Wynonna howling and grunting in funky jubilation. Though not one that addresses the deep issues of the human condition, lyrically "This Country's Rockin'," a blithe partying anthem, may be a little contrived.
Lyrically much superior is the sparse ballad "Are the Roses Not Blooming?" "Roses'" delicately sings home the homily that there is always hope in the midst life's tribulation. This is a great attestation that Nashville's songwriters can utilize the matter of three minutes or so to speak to one's heart. Wynonna's sensitive vocals and John Jarvis' excellent playing on the keyboard are sublime. "Love Can Build A Bridge," another top 10 hit for the Judds, continues the inspirational thread. Though lyrically a little cliché, this Paul Overstreet, John Jarvis and Naomi Judd co-write with its theme of reconciliation has a universal rhetoric.
Two of the most country offerings are "John Deere Tractor" and "Calling in the Wind." For the sake of nostalgia, "John Deere Tractor," their debut single was revived, albeit a new recording. "John Deere Tractor" and "Calling in the Wind," are both backed by nice fiddling and potent imagery. You don't get more country than tractors, open fields and a paternal tribute.
However, without trying to be too rustic, "Talk About Love" is one of the best pop offerings the Judds has had ever recorded. Wynonna's urgent delivery is backed by a punchy beat and some exceptional guitar playing, "Talk About Love" is an understated gem. Equally poppish, though less poignant is Naomi Judd and Don Schlitz's "One Hundred And Two."
There are many pleasurable on this final Judds CD. But the essential quality that sets this CD apart from other country releases is the inter-weaving vocals from mama Judd and daughter. This is further accentuated by Brent Maher's deft production. Together with their previous release "River of Time," these two CDs are the Judds at their finest.

I have been a huge fan of Wynonna's since the early days of The Judd's. I have every single album she has put out with The Judd's and Solo efforts. I have seen her live 10 times. She never fails to impress me. This woman can sing ANY genre of music and succeed in doing so. On her first solo Christmas album, Wynonna sings some of the songs she did on her X-mas album with her mom. This time she has an Orchestra to back her powerful vocals. The Chrismas Song, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, White Christmas all sound like the classic traditional versions. Her voice with the Orchestra...WOW! On Santa Claus is Coming to town...I like the little bells in the background and the children singing. Ave Maria, Emmanuel and It's the Messiah are all beautiful songs. Not very many people could pull off Ave Maria. Wynonna does effortlessly!!! What more can I say....This is just a beautiful traditional christmas album that will be a staple in my CD player during the Holiday Season for years to come.

Combine one of Country's most recognized voices with the most revered holiday classics of all time and music fans have reason to celebrate the season with Wynonna's first ever solo holiday album, A Classic Christmas.Wynonna's warm delivery on holiday favorites such as "The Christmas Song", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "O Holy Night" leave the listener yearning for the smell of chestnuts roasting on the open fire.Wynonna delivers a few gems too that'll leave you speechless, especially the emotional "Ave Maria" recorded in Italianized Latin. From start to finish, A Classic Christmas certainly lives up to its name.

The Legends Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71 Review

The Legends Ike and Tina Turner - Live In '71
Average Reviews:

"Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71" - even in this cut state - is probably the only full-length Ike & Tina concert available on DVD today, so for that alone, it's well-worth owning.
It's all the more essential, though, because it's truly a blast - this is the most energetic, soulful, joyous live concerts I think I've ever seen - and the songs themselves are just crazy, vibrant, brilliant performances by one of the most talented musical outfits of the 1970s.
Although the predominantly Dutch audience doesn't quite seem to 'get' it at the beginning - whenever should such a concert be a seated gig, anyway? - it doesn't take in the least from our appreciation of the atmosphere, and, even though there are one or two glaring flaws in the DVD presentation itself (several of the more noteworthy tracks such as "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Respect" and "Shake a Tail Feather" are missing, why is this??), it still doesn't stop this from being a powerful and wonderful celebration of music and dance.
Tina's on top of her game here, to watch her is to really understand the love a great performer has of his genre. From her entrance, right up to the end of "I Smell Trouble", there's not one part of her body that isn't in constant rhythm with the music, and her voice is amazing - raspy and raw, with a power behind it that lends so much more depth to the songs than many of their original performers lacked. The dance routines with the Ikettes, thanks to what's now a more amateur and simple style of camerawork, are powerful and energetic; you want to get up off the couch and dance with them! "Proud Mary" and the amazing "I Wanna Take You Higher" are examples, but even on the more downbeat tracks such as "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Come Together" (the Beatles, except better! Who knew?!) the masterful combinations of musical arrangement, vocal and choreography show us precisely why the Ike & Tina Turner revue was such a respected live act.
This is an excellent DVD, the restoration - although not perfect - has a great audio quality, and the visuals are just fine. The CD is a nice addition, though it would have been better, obviously, to include all the tracks on the DVD. Special Features are interesting, including a great short of the Ike & Tina performance at the 1971 'Soul to Soul' concert in Africa. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough; even with its shortcomings, it's still a treasure and a great recording of one of the best live acts of all time.

One of the most dynamic R&B duos of the '60s and early '70s, Ike and Tina Turner were a force to be reckoned with. Their live shows, nothing short of legendary, were high-octane performances of carefully orchestrated music from Ike turner combined with the raw sexual energy of vocalist Tina Turner. This spectacular CD/DVD set is from Holland in 1971, during the peak of Ike & Tina's tumultuous career.Track Listing (DVD): 1. Them Changes 2. Sweet Inspiration 3. I Want To Take You Higher 4. Pretty Little Stranger Review

Joan Osborne's "Pretty Little Stranger" has some shining moments. The self-penned title tune has an excellent beat, a throbbing bass line, and Joan's powerful vocals connecting with the band, "There is a Spanish boy who also rides the A train. I want to tag him like a tiger so I can track him as he moves around the city so I can guard him like an angel." This is a stellar track, on a par with Joan's best work. The beautiful melody of Patty Griffin's "What You Are" is polished by Joan's lovely vocals, "Do you wish you were the silence of the moon? Nobody knows but maybe you will be soon." Joan's "After Jane" is a delight with the vocals passionate and the music cranked, "Will I rise up again? Will I ever know a friend like my Jane!" There are other beautiful moments like Beth Nielsen Chapman's gorgeous tune of "Time Won't Tell," given a country twang with pedal steel guitar and Vince Gill on harmony. Rodney Crowell's "When the Blue Hour Comes" is a lovely ballad. On a few tracks like "Brokedown Palace" & "Shake the Devil" the band seems sleepy, unable to keep up with Joan's vocal fireworks. Most of the CD is excellent and deserves to be embraced by Joan's fans, old & new. Enjoy!

As a long time Martina fan, I am absolutely loving this album more and more each time I listen to it. The songs on here are amazing but it is Martina's vocals that of course makes the song. But it isnt just her voice, it is the emotion she puts into her songs that makes you feel that same emotion. For example, on the song Lies, Martina's voice just gives you chills with the way she delivers this very powerful song. But then goes to Wrong Baby Wrong Baby Wrong with a very cool and edgy sound. Then there is What Do I Have to Do- awesome period. Walk Away- there is just something great about this song-you have to hear it for yourself to see what I am saying.I'm Trying-that has to be the saddest song yet with an uplifting message. Wild Rebel Rose- be careful as you may tear up. I Just Call You Mine is a very sweet love song but not overly sweet. You're Not Leaving Me- GREAT SONG!!! Of course her hit single Ride, Sunny Side Up-just a fun and cool upbeat song!..I know as I said I am a long time Martina fan, but really I couldnt find a weak song in the list. I left out Dont Cost a Dime-just another great song on this amazing album. I highly recommend this album to new Martina fans!!!

Linda Ronstadt's amazing tribute to the music of her father finally comes to DVD. Not only is the show visually dazzling; but her voice couldn't be more beautiful. And the dancing and the sets and Danny Valdez!!! I saw the tour live years ago and am very impressed how well the show has been captured on film. You have never seen a show like this before!
In reading reviews about Linda Ronstadt's work I am always surprised when people try to lock her into one era or style. Nowadays when its said a recording artist has reinvented themself.. it usually means they have colored their hair or changed their clothing.
With Linda Ronstadt you hear not only her talent but her attention to style and detail. Her phrasing and delivery are so authentic you would think she was from another time or place. What an intelligent and fascinating musical career this woman has had (and has)!!! Her talent and continuous commitment to craft inspires and humbles the rest.

Fearless (Platinum Edition, CD & DVD) Review

Fearless (Platinum Edition, CD and DVD)
Average Reviews:

Taylor Swift is one talented teen! She had a hand again in every song on her highly anticipated sophomore CD - this time she wrote 7, and co-wrote 6. The first single, "Love Story" is a good example of how she can combine great lyrics with a catchy beat - and then produce a smash crossover hit. The most remarkable thing about the album is that it is incredibly balanced...and almost every song is so good that it could be released as a radio single. I think it is now safe to say that she is a rising star who will just keep on rising!
Taylor opens the album with the strong title track "Fearless", and ends the album with the powerful theme song of the summer Olympics, "Change". In the middle is a sure huge hit "The Way I Loved You" - a song that she wrote with John Rich. "Fifteen" is her most personal song, a bittersweet gem where she sings about her freshman year and her best friend for the past 5 years, Abigail. "White Horse" (which has already been featured on Grey's Anatomy) is a well written tearjerker - a heartfelt song that is just waiting to become her next blockbuster hit. A good example of her more acoustic side is "Breathe" - a simple song written with Colbie Caillat who also sings background vocals in the song. Taylor's writing seems to have matured and grown in the past 2 years. Take "The Best Day" for example - which is a completely different but awesome song, which is written about her family. She appeals to a wide audience, and executes this so well here on Fearless.
It's incredible how quickly Taylor crossed over and became not only a big country star, but a huge pop star also. It took only her second single - Teardrops On My Guitar - for her to become amazingly popular in mainstream music! Then she continued to release 3 more hits (two of them #1) off her debut album. Talk about a hard act to follow - but I can't see this trend stopping anytime soon with Fearless - this album is a major home run. She isn't the same country artist who sang "Tim Mcgraw", and I understand that some people will not be happy about that. If there are any flaws here, it would be that many of the songs are pop-country hits which are about the same subject - teens. You can't please everyone, but look for her to just become even bigger and more popular, with more #1's and crossover pop smash hits. Taylor's sophomore CD is very well done...filled with excellent, self-penned, radio-friendly top 40 hits! Overall ~ 9/10 ~

Not since Shania Twain bared her midriff, and gained legions of fans outside of the country music scene, has there been a disc that blatantly wears its intentions on its (album) sleeve. Literally, the songwriting and producing credits are littered with a who's who of names that are ruling the charts in every genre. And with a longer listening, this album has to be Underwood's most focused. The melodies are smoother, "This Time" with its stuttering drum just below the mix and harmony is just so breezy and effective it leaves you with no choice but to tap your toes and sing-along to the chorus.
But that is what the whole album is built on, an inner arena feeling. It has a much fuller sound than carnival ride. It's grander, and oozing in bombast, "Cowboy Casanova" & "Songs Like This" give you just enough fiddle and twang to satisfy without purely catering to a pop audience. With such stellar production it is almost too easy to ignore the real star in all of this: Carrie Underwood. Her vocals and interpretation has grown, shockingly, from her last disc, which found her range expanding. "Someday When I Stop Loving You" & "Temporary Home," brings to mind the best of Martina McBride, heartbreaking beauty at its best.
Carrie Underwood is going for an even broader radio sound, but who isn't in country music today. Yes, there are a bigger array of genre bending producers that bring elements of R&B, Rock, etc., but it works so brilliantly that you can't fault her for it. If Underwood wasn't delivering such honest delivery and conviction this would be a four star disc, but she brings so much to the table vocally that is impossible to not feel that she has given her all to this project, you can feel her pushing for you to enjoy this disc. There is a faith and purity to this woman's delivery that brings to mind the best artists from Cline to Womack (whose latest CD isn't garnering as much attention as it deserves). Country music -- heck, music in general needs her.

Just a short review from me on this set (I'm referring to Vol. 1 AND 2) of 'on tour' music by Patsy Cline & Loretta Lynn. If you are fans of either or both you will naturally enjoy this set of CD's/Cassettes. However, don't expect "Live" actual on Tour preformances (like I did) all the songs are the often heared studio versions recorded by each artist seperately.
I have to give it 4 out of 5 stars simply due to the fact that the cover art on this set makes a potential buyer think that they are purchasing "live tour music" not radio versions.
Buyer beware... but I do recommend these CD's/cassettes if you are a fan of either singer as it's a cheap way to get hit songs by both artists! I am happy with the choice of songs, and think you will be too......but darn it, it just AINT live, like I was lead to believe!!! :o)

Dolly (Box Set) Review

Dolly (Box Set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well here it is, a spectacular boxset on Dolly Parton. A few medicore boxsets on Dolly have been released over the years, but they all pale in comparison to this beautiful gem. Featuring an informative sixty page booklet on Miss Parton with rare pictures never seen before, the crowning jewel are seven tracks never released from Dolly's various record labels. The newly released songs are "Gonna Hurry (As Slow As I Can) which is one of the first songs Dolly ever recorded back in the 1950's; "Nobody But You" recorded when Dolly was 16 years old on Mercury Records; "I've Known You All My Life" from Dolly's Monument period; "Everything's Beautiful (In It's Own Way) that was originally recorded for "The Fairest of Them All" album in 1969; "God's Coloring Book" recorded during the "Coat of Many Colors" 1971 sessions; and finally "Eugene Oregon" and "What Will Baby Be" from 1972's "My Tennessee Mountain Home" album recordings. Out of these seven wonderful tracks four are really standouts; "Gonna Hurry" is true Dolly and she proves even at 10 years of age not only would she be a huge country music star, but a pop superstar. Her voice is pure, strong, original and unmistakingly Dolly. "Everything's Beautiful" is a song Dolly wrote before she came to Nashville and it is truely one of the most beautiful songs she has ever written. It was the song Dolly sang to Porter Wagoner the very day he called her to his office in 1967 to hire her as his "girl singer" on his TV and road show. "God's Coloring Book", that was later recorded for Dolly's 1977 "Here You Come Again" album, is far superior than the remake. You can hear a lot of the "Coat of Many Colors" sound and Dolly's vocal is impeccable and crystle pure. Lastly, "Eugene Oregon" has a neat tempo and is similar in vocal style to the rest of her "My Tennessee Mountain Home" recordings. Another great part about this boxset are the hardly heard singles and B-Sides that have rarely been released on CD over the years, most notably "Puppy Love", "It's Sure Gonna Hurt" and its B-Side "The Love You Gave", and the beautiful "Put It Off Until Tomorrow", which is actually a Bill Phillip's recording, but features Dolly doing background vocals uncredited. This particular recording is one of the most important Dolly recordings ever as it would persuade Dolly's then record label Monument, at Dolly's insistence, to record her country. Porter Wagoner would eventually discover her from her country oriented recordings on Monument and the rest is history.
