Brian Setzer - Christmas Extravaganza (2005) Review

Brian Setzer - Christmas Extravaganza (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw the Brian Setzer Orchestra two years back when they did a Christmas show here in Wisconsin, and I'm seeing them this holiday season as well, so I figured this would be a great disc to buy. And was I ever right! This disc does a much better job of capturing the fun atmosphere and high energy music of the band than their previous DVD release did. The band sounds just as good as they do on both of their Christmas CD's, and watching the band mambers get into the music while playing it, makes it even more fun for the viewer. The highlight of the disc (and of their live show in general) is when they play the "Nutcracker Suite" for an encore. While often considered a "novelty" swing band, the Nutcracker really shows that all members of the band are world-class musicians first and foremost. It was good to see a few non-Christmas Setzer classics in the playlist, but "Rumble in Brighton" and "Fishnet Stockings" seem odd choices for a Christmas show. Overall, great Christmas fun for all viewers, and I highly recommend it!

I have to confess, when I first watched this dvd, tears came to my eyes. I dont know why, I guess it moved me that much. I have been a Frampton fan since I heard Comes Alive back in 76. This dvd is GREAT. The picture quality is superb, the sound is supurb, and just the way the whole thing was put together is totally awesome. Frampton is playing in Detroit at the Pine Knob Ampitheater, in front of a packed house. The crowd enthuasium is very high, and Frampton gets it up even higher. He plays all his old hits like, Baby I love Your Way, Show Me The Way, Do You Feel Like We Do, and some other old stuff, as well as some newer stuff. I must say, that he has not lost it. He still has that distinguishable guitar sound and voice that we as Peter Frampton fans love. If you close your eyes while you have this dvd playing, you could almost swear that it was 1976 all over again. People, this dvd is really that good. I highly recommend it to Frampton fans(A MUST HAVE) and music lovers everywhere....

Olivia Newton-John and the Sydney Symphony: Live at the Sydney Opera House (2008)

I had seen some teasers of this concert on PBS and thought it looked pretty tight, so I was hopeful it would be better than the pretty-good concert Olivia put out in limited release from 2002. MY how she has grown in confidence since then! She was really at ease with ALL of her musical styles here, and with the audience, and with her band.
For those who have seen her live in this century (haha, but quite seriously), you know she has stuck with a particular musicians in her band line-up at guitar & backing vocals & a multi-instrumentalist. Well, they have all improved together over the years, and she splits her vocal duets with all of them plus a video with peter allen (RIP) that is quite dramatic instead of what you'd think (cheesy) -- it came off like a beautiful surreal movie. Step back Babs Streisand, theres a superior mature female vocalist with wider musical range of selection and a purer heart! Olivia is just in her finest form!
Not only do the duets remind you what a skilled duets singer she is -- she has an entirely unique ability to blend her voice with others, always giving them the space to excel while quietly creating the whole landscape on which the feeling of the song sits! But its clear she gets on with the band so well, and they ALL clearly LIKE each other and "Get it" about Olivia, and help support her being the best she can be. You are not watching a concert of a group that is just there to get their paycheck and join the next artist's tour. They are ALL on board just for Olivia, and over the last 8 years, their loyalty has turned up real gold in their performances together. I dont say this because "thats nice" but because it makes for great collaborative music. Add in the lush Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and you have a classic.
You also get to feel the genuine gratitude not only for a fellow Aussie music legend, Peter Allen -- who was married for 7 years to Liza Minnelli before coming out gay in 1974, the year he wrote one of Olivia's definitive songs "I Honestly Love You" -- Their "Tenderfield Saddler" duet here was a big payback, and added just another transcendent dimension to this amazing concert.
But I guess the main thing to point out here is that Livvy is in a really good place, as her recent recordings bear proof. Though oddly, I am saying all of this without any representation on this DVD from 3 of my very favorite Newton-John albums in this concert (Totally Hot, Back with a Heart, and Grace & Gratitude), the show is so superb, you can understand the choices perfectly. She didnt need those 3 albums to still spin out this masterpiece.
For someone with 30 (THIRTY!) top 40 hits in their career, it is easy to become a slave to your past success, merely a showcase for your hits. In fact, thats almost the rule among pop/rock performers. But Olivia has turned that around: Her hits are merely showcasing HER. She has emerged - at almost 60 years of age - as an agelessly powerful singer, writer, interpreter & performer, who is still entirely present, and not at all sheepishly digging up the past. This is really really impressive stuff.
So if you're thinking "Maybe" about adding this to your dvd collection, then I can pretty much promise you, the answer is YES ... you should get it.

Queensryche - Operation Livecrime (1991) Review

Queensryche - Operation Livecrime (1991)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a brilliant piece of work from one of the most alternative and outstanding hard rock bands - Queensryche. The album "Operation Mindcrime" (which was released in 1988), was a classic concept album and phenomenal not merely for the band itself but also in rock history. "Video Mindcrime" (which was released in 1989) was an excellent piece of storytelling putting the songs and music into visual image. "Operation Livecrime" was a further step ahead to put the story into live performance.
I bought the box set way back in 1991 which made up of a Vhs cassette, a booklet about the story behind the album and a CD. The moment I saw the DVD on display inside a shop last week, I just did not hesitate to buy it. And now, here we are, "Operation Livecrime" in DVD eventually.
The performance itself was immaculate. Every single member of the band did their respective part perfectly. They played every single song in the album. The partnership of Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton in guitar playing was second to none and irreplaceable but also one which supposedly every fan of the band would sadly miss. By no means I am playing down the role of Kelly Gray (who replaced Chris), himself being an outstanding guitarist on his own merits, however there is unfortunately something missing in the standard of performance (particularly live performance) of the band following the departure of Chris who had made such a huge contribution to the development of the band. There is no question about that.
There is however one aspect which I sadly noticed from the song "Suite Sister Mary". It seems that the vocal portion of Pamela Moore was recorded beforehand, that is she did not seem to have sung her lines live. I hope I am wrong.
In all, this DVD is definitely a must for every die hard Queensryche fan and serious fan of rock music. Just go ahead and buy it. Believe me, it is worth every single cent.

If you love Mary you will love anything that she does. I enjoy the artist and I feel like she lives her music. This DVD lacked the quality of the "Mary J. Blige - Live in Los Angeles ", but it is a stepping stone for her growth as a performer. Don't get me wrong she still blows most artists out of the water but the DVD has a few mistakes that where notable.
Still a must have for Mary J's fans but novel listeners would enjoy the "Mary J. Blige - Live in Los Angeles" DVD more

If you got this far, you are probably interested in getting this historical concert on DVD. Filmed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in November of 1997, I can attest that having been at this concert, it is remarkable. Over 30 hits with a great light-show presentation was accompanied by live duets with Celine Dion on "Immortality", a pre-recorded duet with Franki Valli on a blasting "Grease" and a truly heartbreaking quartet with the late brother Andy Gibb on "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away". The large movie screen served as a backdrop for many old family videos as well as the Bee Gees performing songs from over four decades.
The technicalities: If you have a simple DVD player without a DTS Surround Sound player and receiver, you can buy any of the DVD's. If you are fortunate enough to own a DTS Surround capable DVD player and receiver, you are set for what the concert really sounded like! Remember that this was recorded in the 80,000 plus seat MGM Grand and the acoustics add something that is different than a regular studio recording. The crowd is recorded perfectly to coincide with the performance. Check your system, then decide. If you plan on a new system, I highly recommend spending a few extra bucks and getting this DTS Surround feature. It is that good.

Live from the River of Dreams (1994)

This was a pretty good show, but hardly definitive when you consider the depth and breadth of Billy's catalogue. I, and most of his other fans, are still waiting for that one show that encapsulates everything that he is and does. This is a good performance but it didn't take my breath away. For one thing, he's great all by himself. An intimate "VH-1 Storytellers" type of concert might have been more compelling. Alternatively, a show that was about twice as long might have made this release feel more like an entree and less like an appetizer. This will have to do until something better comes along...
You will notice that Billy keeps rolling his eyes during the performance. Initially I thought he was just bored with the whole thing. After watching it a 2nd time I realized that he was trying desperately to avoid looking at the cameras while they were recording. This was probably done at the director's behest. It was an odd choice.
He also sweats profusely at times, and sounds a bit congested early in the show. He may not have been feeling well at the time.
One of the main highlights, and the thing that makes this one a keeper, was Billy's rendition of the Beatles' "Hard Day's Night". He was clearly turned on by the experience and I think the audience fed off of that energy.
Also of note: Billy is seen playing the piano with his arse during one segment, which I found oddly amusing. It kind of reminded me of one of those clasic rock moments such as Chuck Berry's duck-walk or Jerry Lee Lewis' various on-stage antics. He was clearly in the moment, which was great to see.
Final note: The bonus cd that comes with this dvd contains Billy's "All My Life" which is essentially his best Frank Sinatra impersonation. Even the cover photo shows him wearing one of Frank's hats. Be that as it may, there are a couple of live cuts from the Madison Square Garden show which have some real passion to them (particularly "Honesty"). It's a good little collection of songs (3 1/2 stars).

The only downside to the dvd for me was that the following eight songs had been cut in the final edit:
Girls
Two People
Nutbush City Limits
Steel Claw
Back Were You Started
Acid Queen
Show Some Respect
It's Only Love (Duet with John Miles)
A real shame because as ever for Tina Turner it was a fantastic concert at her prime.

Joe Satriani - Live in San Francisco (2000) Review

Joe Satriani - Live in San Francisco (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll take this DVD over "G3" every time. "Joe Satriani - Live in San Francisco" is a superb combination of great playing, great sound, and good camera work and editing.
This concert, recorded at the Fillmore in December of 2000, showcases 24 songs plus a short blues introduction (not listed) and a bass solo. Eight studio albums are represented, from "Not of This Earth" (1986) through "Engines of Creation" (2001; not yet released at the time). "Crystal Planet" (1998), "Surfing With the Alien" (1987), and "Flying in a Blue Dream" (1989) were the most represented, with six, five, and four songs, respectively.
Overall, the performance has all the ingredients that make for a superlative rock 'n' roll concert: well over two hours of music, tight playing (one of the band's "on" nights), enough variation on the songs to make them "live" without losing the essence of the music, varied camera views (without going overboard on the tilted angles, thank you), and expert sound mixing. Disc 1 features thirteen songs, with very little down time between numbers; no need to go into detail about every song; they're all great. Disc 2 adds eleven more, plus a little more flavor with the opening blues intro and a bass solo by Stu Hamm that incorporates classically themed arpeggios, popping/hammering techniques and even a rendition of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown." Also, "Big Bad Moon" features Joe singing and playing a harmonica that doubles as a slide (clever). As opposed to his G3 "power trio," Joe enlisted the services of Eric Caudieux, who added rhythm guitar and keyboards, which is a smart move since as the "middle" was severely lacking from the G3 show. Still, I would have preferred that Eric made it out front even more often, similar to what guitarist Mike Keneally does in Steve Vai's band. Jeff Campitelli keeps his driving drum beats going throughout. Even with my audio system set to "DVD Stereo" the tunes still rocked. Users of 5.1 will be really pleased.
For the most part, the camera work is very good. Lots of angles are available both from the boom-mounted unit over the audience, and a few hand-held "roamers." The vast majority of the time, what's on the screen is exactly what I want to see: Joe's playing posture and fingering are highlighted 80% of the time, as it should be. Seeing the cameramen moving around all over the place was a little distracting at times, but not enough to damage the video presentation. Check out the feature that allows for four different camera angles on three of the songs: the hand-helds provide a more intimate dynamic perspective, mostly from on stage. Also worth watching is the nine-minute backstage commentary where Joe explains his influences, describes his pedal effects, etc.
Satriani fans MUST get this DVD. It's great for other guitar/rock fans as well.

Norah Jones and The Handsome Band - Live in 2004 (2004) Review

Norah Jones and The Handsome Band - Live in 2004 (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a connoisseur of music on DVD, I am puzzled by some of the previous reviewers' remarks. I've watched it twice now, and in my opinion this is one of the finest music DVD's to be released in years.
It goes without saying that there is more musical talent in a Q-tip full of Nora Jones' earwax than in any three of the current crop of silly, belly-baring "stars" that have been manufactured for our consumption, and this DVD highlights her talent perfectly.
The fantastic group of musicians that she so graciously introduces to us, (both in her band and appearing as special guests,) only add to the experience. This is stage playing at its very best, and everyone involved seems to be inspired to deliver their all, simply because they are playing with Nora.
Finally, the arrangements, lighting, cinematography, editing and direction are all at or near top-notch. I simply can't think of any complaints; even blurring is used artistically during some of the shot changes, and along with wide-angles and closeups, we get a cornucopia of "musicians" shots of fingers and hands at work on strings and keys.
If you like Nora Jones even a little bit, buy this DVD and after watching it, you'll like her a lot more.
And finally, to those reviewers who seem to feel compelled to comment on her appearance: In my book, she sounds and plays so well that it wouldn't make any difference if she looked like W.C. Fields. That she is beautiful is just a minor and almost irrelevant fringe benefit to being able to watch her genius in action.

Muse: Hullabaloo Live at Le Zenith, Paris Review

Muse: Hullabaloo Live at Le Zenith, Paris
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The quest for world domination continues. Here is Muse's third instalment of progressive, heavy rock. This time it's a double CD of B-sides and live songs. First, the B-sides. It must be said that Muse have a fairly set sound, and a lot of their songs sound fairly similar. Upon closer inspection, you will notice that it is mainly Matt Bellamy's voice that causes this effect. This is more evident that ever on the B-sides album. Many of these songs experiment further away from their album tracks. Opener Forced In is spaced out and eerie rather than in-your-face, and Map of Your Head is a sprightly, major-chord formed ditty, complete with medieval acoustic guitar, yet Matt Bellamy's voice causes them to sound like trademark Muse all the same.
There's no denying it, Muse's B-sides are not as strong as their album tracks, generally. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Whilst it does mean that this B-side album is nowhere near as good as last year's Origin of Symmetry, it at least means that they are selecting the right tracks for their albums. In this way B-sides albums are a bit of a no-win situation: if they are only average, they are criticised as substandard and if they are excellent the band are criticised for not making them album tracks.
Not that there aren't good efforts here. The aforementioned Map of Your Head is very enjoyable, whilst Shrinking Universe is classic Muse and standout Nature_1 has the strongest tune on the CD. Generally though, this collection doesn't bear the killer hooklines that Origin of Symmetry, or, indeed, Showbiz did, whilst being enjoyable and worth owning, so CD1 gets 3 stars.
The live CD is a different matter. Muse are an intense band. Everything about their music is intense. And intense bands are excellent live. Muse are no exception. Live CDs tend to either be interesting variations on the recorded versions with added intensity but played comparatively poorly, with the singer missing notes, or well played, but no different to the studio recordings. Here Muse manage to avoid either trap, managing to sound live and intense while playing very professionally.
Here you can hear how well the trio work together, with bass more audible than on studio recordings, as they sometimes hit little periods of improvisation. Variations are added to the songs: the guitar riff on Muscle Museum is made more complex, while Micro Cuts is taken at a faster and more natural pace, and epics Citizen Erased and Megalomania hit their peaks and valleys with even more passion than on Origin of Symmetry: one of the finest moments of Hullabaloo being as Citizen Erased quietens down after its loudest sections, with Matt Bellamy beautifully handling the vocals, in a wonderfully exhausted sort of way.
It is credit to Bellamy's fantastic singing that he can manage the incredibly high notes and difficult techniques just as easily live as in the studio. The only time he seems slightly pressed is on recent non-album single Dead Star, though this is fully explainable by the fact that they had not actually recorded it at the time, and so had not benefited from the producer's input over how the song should sound, and they are evidently not quite done working on it at the time of the recording. Still, even this track is fantastic. Therefore, CD2 is nothing short of brilliant, and it gets 4 1/2 stars.

Celine Dion - All the Way... A Decade of Song and Video (2001)
Average Reviews:

"Oh My God!" I couldn't stop watching this DVD once I got it. Celine is so spectacular, and this DVD sure does show it! I love all the old videos, "new" videos, and live performances! Who says teenage guys can't LOVE Celine?
Here's my run-down:
1. Program start: This is just a short "into" clip. About 30 seconds long. Short and sweet.
2. The Power of Love (Music Video):
I may not be "your lady," but I bet after seeing this video, and hearing this song, every guy wants to be Celine's "man." It's so amazing. She hits the high notes perfectly.
3. If You Asked Me To (Music Video):
This may be an old vid, but it's so great! Celine looks so beautiful, and the video made me feel as if I were in a dream. Great job!
4. Misled (Music Video):
Okay, maybe the video was kid of..."so, so." The song has kind of like a "funky" beat to it. Not what we're used to from Celine. But it's something different, and we don't here it all the time. And if it was a single, then it's gotta be good, right? Nice job.
5. Beauty and the Beast (duet with Terry Bradford) [LIVE]:
If it's a Disney song, then ya know it's great! Trust me, this is the song you want to be stuck in your head all day. It's live and from the "Falling Into You" concert, in Memphis. Not bad Celine, not bad at all.
6. Because You Loved Me [LIVE]:
No, it's not the music video. But it's just as good, (maybe even a little better). I LOVE this song. It's so pure. Celine... you know what we want. Thanks.
7. It's All Coming Back To Me Now [Single Version] (Music Video):
Now here's a side of Celine we don't see often. WOW! This video blew me away. So amazing! I loved it from the start till the end. Uh... what can ya say? It's G-R-E-A-T!
8. Love Can Move Mountains (Music Video):
I know everyone loves this song! It just makes you want to get up and dance, and just have a good time. And when you look beyond the fun, it has an outstanding message! Great song, fun video, positive message... what more can you ask for?
9. To Love You More (feat. Taro Hakase) [LIVE]:
A hit not only in Japan, but all over the world! Celine knows what she's doing! This song is amazing, and even features a very special guest! This is a wonderful performance!
10. My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme from Titanic) (Music Video):
Okay! Now you cannot get any bigger than Titanic! Oh, yes you can, just have a hit show in Las Vegas! This video is AMAZING! Celine is sooo beautiful in her dress, and I know everyone's head this song, and I know everyone LOVES it! No matter you are!
11. I'm Your Angel (duet with R. Kelly) (Music Video):
WOW! This is such a pure song, and is just so inspirational! Celine, doing her best as always, and a side of R. Kelly we hardly ever see. Just so heavenly!
12. That's the Way It Is (Music Video):
Seems almost impossible! Celine is so down-to-earth in this video. It's like she's one of us! We all love her, and we'll love her even more after this! I promise!
13. If Walls Could Talk (Music Video):
This is one of my most favorite video of ALL TIME! How can you pass this by! I cried when I saw this video! The setting is so calm and peaceful, Celine looks gorgeous, and song is so soothing! Bravo Celine, bravo!
14. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (From the "All The Way... A Decade of Song" CBS-TV Special) [LIVE]:
This is one of the songs that you'll wish you could only do, but Celine is the only one who can do it. Such a dreamy song. It just fades you away, and lets you know that your tribulations are for just a day. You'll just fade into this lovely balled.
15. All the Way (duet with Frank Sinatra) [LIVE]:
Ahhh... wonderful. A love song that can't get any better. And only Celine can sing it like Frank Sinatra. This is one of the BEST songs of all time... All the way.
16. Then You Look at Me (Music Video):
I love it! Celine performs this song, in a way that no other could, or can ever reach! This video is so cool! It has a mystery about it, the kind that makes me get chills every time I see it! Oh gosh! Just spectacular!
17. I Want You to Need Me (Music Video):
This is such a beautiful music video! Is that beach in there real? It looks gorgeous, and... If only I could have been there with Celine. I just adore this video!
18. Live For The One I Love (Music Video):
This video is sort of like in a dream, that you never want to wake up from. It just absolutely takes you away to a land where everything may just be perfect. This video... better than a dream.
BONUS VIDEO: It's All Coming Back to Me Now (stereo mix - long version) (Music Video):
Same review as #7, only longer, with added scene.
Over all, this DVD is as PERFECT as it get! Surly a prize you won't regret winning.

Yes - Songs from Tsongas - 35th Anniversary Concert Review

Yes - Songs from Tsongas - 35th Anniversary Concert
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The much-delayed live DVD from Yes' 35th Anniversary tour is finally here, and it was well worth the wait. The sound is good, the direction and editing are good, the performances are stellar musically, and the whole thing is put together very well.
If you weren't able to see the tour, then you'll especially enjoy this DVD immensely. This is unlike any other Yes tour. The first thing that is unique is the inclusion of an acoustic set, which is fun and informal, but includes some impressive music. Second, this show is a true retrospective of the band's entire career. We get the standards, of course ("Your is No Disgrace", "All Good People", "Starship Trooper", "Owner of a Lonely Heart", etc). But the rest of the show is made up of rarely-played material: two songs from the early albums ("Sweet Dreams" and a terrific "Every Little Thing"), an ABWH song ("The Meeting"), finally some inclusion of music from the mid-90s ("Mind Drive" and the intro from "Footprints" dressed up as a short song), two Rabin-era songs ("Rhythm of Love" plus the obligatory "Owner"), some newer material ("Time is Time" from MAGNIFICATION and "Show Me"), and a few deep cuts like "Turn of the Century". The whole thing kicks off with "Going for the One" and culminates with a searing "Ritual".
The highlights are an amazing rendition of "South Side of the Sky", one of the most emotional performances of "And You and I" I've ever heard, the gorgeous "Wonderous Stories", possibly the most perfect Yes song ever, and a truly lovely "Century". Other really great moments are Rick's lovely piano intro to the acoustic set, his solos in the Rabin-era songs, Steve's beautiful "Second Initial" which closes the acoustic set, and of course Chris' bass solo in "Ritual", although it is not as long or as raucous as I've seen it before.
I highly recommend this DVD to other Yes fans. If you enjoyed the band's other DVD releases in recent years, then this one will certainly not disappoint. I'll have to go back through my collection to reevaluate everything, but this may be one of the best DVDs Yes has released.

Tina Turner: Live In Amsterdam/One Last Time (2 DVD Set) (2005) Review

Tina Turner: Live In Amsterdam/One Last Time (2 DVD Set) (2005)

Both of these concerts serve as amazing recent chapters in the long, impressive performance history of Tina Turner. The voice, the legs and the energy have not yet seemed to wither! The Amsterdam concert is a little more slickly edited in that "music video style," but the songs are great! Tina really rocks (most notably during her heavy metal version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," and the climactic "Nutbush City Limits.") The second great concert at Wembley seems more fashioned as a theatrical performance - with Tina taking a seat onstage for the first time that I can remember! She sizzles during her seated low-key version of "Steamy Windows," but also cranks it up for the famous "Proud Mary" hair flip dance number! This is a great opportunity to have both of these great concerts TOGETHER! Now how about releasing a COMPLETE Tina Turner music video (video, not live performance) anthology on DVD??? Like the song says, Tina is simply "The Best!"
