My daughter got this DVD for a Christmas present and it has been heavily played by every member of our family since. If you even remotely like the Rejects you are going to want to check out the DVD.
It has songs from their first CD. Nothing from the CD Move Along will be on this DVD. There are videos on it, there is concert footage, and there is footage of the guys hanging around their hometown of Stillwater, OK.
It is a DVD I let my 8 year old watch so, for the most part, it is an all ages DVD. Minor use of swear words.

Broadway the Hard Way Review

Broadway the Hard Way

Overall, a great recording from a fantastic FZ band, clearly the most direct and biting of all of the 80s activist Zappa recordings. No one is spared with conservatives, Republicans, evangelists, Michael Jackson, former Surgeon General Koop, Ronald Reagan (and his entire administration), and Jesse Jackson all becoming targets.
With five horns in support, all of them Mothers veterans, all of the songs are great. That big, fat sound really comes through on the jazz standard "Stolen Moments" and its excellent Walt Fowler trumpet solo. This track segues to a guest appearance by Sting, who takes a direct shot at Jimmy Swaggart, and then performs "Murder By Numbers" with the band providing a smooth jazz backing.
Other great tracks are "Any Kind of Pain," with a fantastic FZ solo; "Elvis Has Just Left the Building" for its great lyrics; "The Untouchables" theme for the anti-Reagan administration rant; "Outside Now" for the extended FZ solo, and; the delightful throwback to the "Fillmore East: June 1971" album with "What Kind of Girl?"
Overall, this is a wonderfully representative live Zappa CD. It captures most of the feel, and definitely the wit and anger of Frank's mid-80s interactions with and responses to his sanctimonious detractors. A must for your Zappa collection, and a great addition to any music lover's collection.

Angie is one of those impossible to pigeonhole into a single genre, so it seems he is forever writing great music that no one ever hears, because he really doesn't have a target audience. He's also one of those with equally strong sound/rhythm to his songs as lyrics; he isn't tilted one way or another. His other albums are really good, but this is the only album for which he had high production values, so for most it ends up being clearly his best. If there isn't at least one song on this album that speaks to you, well... you probably don't like music very much. This album simply oozes quality.
1. Green Into Gold (7/10): Good starter. Won't blow you away, but has strong lyrics and tends to stick in your head. Unlike most of these songs, you'll like this one more immediately as opposed to it growing on you.
2. Spaceship (10/10): This is the best song on the album, period. He hits notes I didn't think humans could hit without enhancement in this song. Simply amazing.
3. Hush (8.5/10): If this was never a single, it should've been.
4. Cry (9.5/10): Faith Hill won a Grammy for her cover of this song, and Angie's original version is quite a bit better. What does that tell you?
5. Third Time Around (8/10): This song doesn't really know if it's country or pop. If you like pop this might get you interested in country, and vice versa. You'll probably skip past it the first play-through, but it grows on you.
6. Free Man (9/10): One of Angie's personal favorites, and I can see why. You may gloss over it the first couple times through the album, but once you give it a chance you'll wonder how you missed it.
7. Gravity (8/10): One of the more emotional, and pop-ish songs on the album. Very clean sound, slightly less lyrically complex than most of the other songs.
8. Beautiful (9/10): Maybe the best lyrics on the album. One of the top few tracks.
9. Memphis City Rain (7/10): Vocal-heavy, slow, relaxing song. Deceptively simple. You could meditate to this.
10. Swell (8/10): More especially strong lyrics, with an extremely in-your face chorus. Has a very odd flow/feel that doesn't seem like it should sound good, but you'll keep playing it again anyway.
11. It's Alright (5.5/10): Strange. Not terrible, but this song doesn't really seem to know what it's trying to do.
12. Wonderland (8/10): This song serves as his proof of what a great singer he is, as he is accompanied for the most part by an acoustic guitar and violin only, and both are in the background supporting his voice, rather than the other way around. He used a live version of this song for this album, too, and the fact that he can get this kind of sound live makes it all the more impressive.
18. The American (8.5/10): Talk about a worth-it bonus track... this song is simply very strong in every aspect.
Yeah yeah, lots of high ratings, I know. But like I said, this is the strongest overall album I've ever heard. "It's Alright" is probably the only song I don't consider to be a very strong track. Pick this one up, no matter what kind of music you listen to. Trust me.

i have remained a hardcore frusciante fan since he left, yet found the peppers albums since his return more and more disapointing (not entirely, just mostly).
then..this album. WOW! if you have given up on them after bssm or even before, you must give them another chance! by far the best thing they have ever done. too many favorite songs to list, although slow cheetah is currently my fav.
now, about the expensive version...
i hate to say i feel ripped off because the music contained is worth every penny and then some, but, well...i feel ripped off.
an extra $30 or so for basically a dvd is what i feel like i got.
the packaging just makes getting to the cd's harder, the dvd is just ok, nothing great. another funky monks type documentary would have been pure magic, the album being recorded in the same mansion, etc. the "28 page booklet" is merely the lyrics and credits and some photos, basically what they probably added in a smaller version on the regular version of the cd. the "original artwork" also could've just been part of the cheaper versions booklet (and maybe it is). everything else is just junk trinckets not worth the extra mony. marbles, blank paper, and a wooden top.
anyways...i cant recommend the more than double price sticker for a crummy gimmick, but the actual album has got to be one of my all time top 5 albums already, and this coming from someone who basically gave up on them after bssm. buy the new cd without hesitation, but proceed with caution on throwing down your money for an overpriced box of junk is all im trying to say.

Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls the band’s first new album in four years, Stadium Arcadium, the most-anticipated album of the spring, "the best thing that we’ve ever done…. There’s this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records." Exuding all the passion, energy and funked-up rock that have made the Red Hot Chili Peppers one of the most popular bands in history, the 2-CD Stadium Arcadium, simply put, will knock your socks off. The Limited Edition is a 3D-image shadow box containing a 28-page book, velvet bag with marbles, a wooden top, a matchbook notepad and four art notes, one by each band member. The Erasure Show - Live In Cologne (2005) Review

The Erasure Show - Live In Cologne (2005)
Average Reviews:

Now you can own The Erasure Show Live In Cologne on DVD. The show was filmed on March 23, 2005.
Who said that only Victoria Secret models could wear wings? Andy Bell of Erasure sure doesn't think that wings are just for lingerie models. You don't want to miss The Erasure Show Live In Cologne. Andy Bell opens the show wearing wings and Erasure's back up singers get in on the act too.
The Erasure Show Live In Cologne is a 27 song set that opens up with the groups cover of the lullaby "Rock-A-Bye-Baby." The concert is really great and Erasure provides fans with a really long set list with numerous costume chances. It's a very theatrical concert. If you haven't followed the group since the 80's you may not recognize a lot of the newer material on the DVD but you will probably enjoy these songs if you liked the kind of songs Erasure released in the 1980's.
In addition to the concert, The Erasure Show Live in Cologne features 149 minutes of bonus material. The DVD features three live performances from Live in Copenhagen, a 2003 concert. The performances on the dvd are for the songs, "In My Arms," "Make Me Smile," and "Piano Song." Additional bonus features include "Making of Live in Cologne," "Interview With Andy and Vince," "The Live in Cologne Time Lapse," and three promotional videos from Nightbird. The videos included are for the songs "Breathe," "Don't Say You Love Me," and "All This Time Still Falling Out Of Love."
This is a great DVD for the Erasure fan. A lot of effort was put into the release of The Erasure Show Live In Cologne. It's much more than just a concert film. It's a great show. I admit I am a very casual Erasure fan and am primarily familiar with their big 80's hits like "Chains of Love," and "Respect" but I was pleased with this release.

Recorded live at the E Werk Stadium, Cologne on March 28th, 2005, this performance was filmed during THE ERASURE SHOW, Erasure's tour for their most recent album, 'Nightbird'. This sensational performance, recorded in 5.1 surround sound, features Erasure's Andy Bell in several costumes, including giant white angel wings and a black Elvis-esque jumpsuit. This package also contains footage from a 2003 Copenhagen concert, a short film on the making of the tour, an interview with Andy Bell & Vince Clarke and videos for 3 tracks from 'Nightbird': "Breathe", "Don't Say You Love Me" and "All This Time Still Falling Out Of Love".

TMBG graduate from drum machines and samples to a full band on this album, and the results are great. Purists label this TMBG's "bad" album, but I believe the full band lends these songs a shot of adrenalin. The lyrics are as good as ever, and they fit well into their new, energetic fixtures.
So many good songs -- the bells of "Destination Moon," the trippy distorted vocal on "Self called nowhere," the theremin on "AKA Driver." There are big rock songs and small gems throughout. Even a seeming throw-away like "Meet James Ensor" is a perfect pop confection (and probably the only song of that genre about a famous dutch artist).
I don't get the jibe "if that's your idea of clever" in the Amazon review. If an album that incorporates Alice Cooper, James Ensor, and Alan Ginsberg in the same 18 songs isn't clever, one wonders what is.
If you can deal with the fact that this album has a different sound than the first four TMBGs, you'll love this stuff.

Erasure - The Tank, The Swan, and The Balloon Live Review

Erasure - The Tank, The Swan, and The Balloon Live
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At long last Erasure has released a dvd of one of their live concerts, and what a spectacular visual (not to mention audio!) feast it is! I've never seen Erasure live, but I have seen clips from some of their concerts on their Hits! dvd, so I had some idea of the sort of thing to expect. Even so, "The Tank, The Swan and The Balloon" (filmed in 1992 with a running time of 135 minutes) is quite unlike anything I've ever seen before. The concert moves through a number of themes, which take their cues from the songs themselves. It's almost like a musical set to the music of (and performed by) Erasure; certainly, it's more of a stage show than a traditional "concert." It's dramatic and campy, with lead vocalist Andy Bell going through seven complete changes of costume, most of which are unusual, all of which are entertaining, and most of which have some connection with at least one of the songs he's singing! The balletic opening with Andy's entrance as a swan (in a swan boat whilst engulfed in white feather boas), for example, is absolutely beautiful; and his "fish-scale" pants are fun and very effective. Most spectacular (not to mention entertaining!) is his blue-sequined, um, "backless" cowboy outfit (which is complemented by Vince Clarke's hilarious Mae West costume)!
Apart from Andy and his costumes, there are two superb back-up vocals (twin sisters) and a full complement of dancers, all of whom also go through a number of really interesting costume changes which are usually themed to the music. As for the choreography, it's nothing short of spectacular, which is especially apparent during the sole instrumental number (The Good, The Bad And The Ugly) which, together with the Arizona-desert backdrop, sets the "cowboy" atmosphere for the upcoming set of songs.
That leads me to the songs themselves. The cowboy-themed numbers include a cover of the country song Stand By Your Man and The Soldier's Return (I'm not sure where this song comes from; I'm not familiar with it and it's not on any of their studio albums). Andy does a breathtakingly beautiful rendition of Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz. Of course, there is the tribute to Abba featuring all four songs from Abba-esque. The rest are all Erasure's own songs: Who Needs Love Like That, Love Is A Loser, and Oh L'amour (from Wonderland); Sometimes (from Circus); A Little Respect, Ship Of Fools, Heart Of Stone, and Chains Of Love (from Innocents); Blue Savannah and Star (from Wild); Stop! (from POP!); and all ten songs from the Chorus album.
Disc two contains the only dvd extra, which is a 25-minute interview (from 2004) with the choreographer, the costume designer, Andy Bell and, at a separate location, Vince Clarke. In a nutshell, they discuss how the idea and themes for the show came about (like the swan, for example), how the music was choreographed, how the ideas for costumes came about and were achieved (that blue-sequined cowboy outfit, which was insured for $125,000, apparently took 5 people 3 months of full-time work to hand bead!), and so on. Excerpts from the concert and snippets of behind-the-scenes footage of rehearsals, etc., are interspersed throughout.
In conclusion, it's obvious that a lot of work went into bringing this musical extravaganza about, and I highly recommend the dvd to all fans of Erasure. Whether you've seen their concerts live or not, if you like the music of this extremely talented British synth-pop duo, you will certainly enjoy this concert. I've watched it twice since getting it (which was less than a week ago), and it is hands down the most entertaining concert I've ever seen!
Extremely highly recommended!

Dig Out Your Soul (Limited Edition CD/DVD) Review

Dig Out Your Soul (Limited Edition CD/DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Oasis returns to the music scene with their newest album in 3 years, Dig Out Your Soul. Like every album they've released since their heyday in the mid-90's, critics, fans, and the band themselves have raved about every album they've released, particularly the last 3, but the hype proved bogus on many occasions: their 2000 album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants was messy, 2002's Heathen Chemistry was good but flawed. The only exception was 2005's Don't Believe The Truth which was great but had just a few sloppy moments. I am a huge Oasis fan, and I can honestly say that Dig out Your Soul is their greatest work since 1995's What's The Story Morning Glory!
The album opens up with the aggressive rocker Bag It Up, Noel's ode to the days when he used to get high, which features crisp vocals by Liam. With lyrics like "Someone tell me I'm dreaming, the freaks are rising up from the floor", Bag It Up can't go wrong, and finds itself amongst Noel Gallagher's classiest rock anthems. This is followed by the toned down, low-key rocker The Turning, which has fast become one of Noel's best compositions and songwritings despite recent claims of plagiarism from a Cliff Richards song. The song features excellent singing by Liam, and has even more interesting lyrics than Bag It Up, take for example the chorus that starts with "So come on, shake your rag doll, baby, before you change your mind." Noel takes over singing duties next with Waiting for the Rapture, a song that borrows the guitar riff from The Doors' Five to One, and, for what its worth, is a great song. The first single, the fast paced, wildly aggressive rocker The Shock of the Lightning comes next, and it is quite simply Oasis's finest single in years. Hearing it the first time, it gave me flashbacks of hearing Definitely Maybe in 1994, particularly the songs Rock 'n Roll Star and Supersonic. The song comes charging at you like a stampede of bulls running through the wilderness. Liam's beautiful ballad, and only ballad on the album, and future hit single, I'm Outta Time, follows. It's a song that Liam doesn't shy away from showing his affection towards his rock hero John Lennon, and expressing his vulnerability with lyrics like, "If I'm to fall, would you be there to applaud?" The song even includes a Lennon soundbite from an interview he made with the BBC 2 days before his untimely death.
Noel returns to the vocals in the next 2 songs, the first, the heavily psychedelic Get Off Your High Horse Lady, a song I've described as a cowboy ditty on acid. The second song is Noel's best, and one of the highlights on Dig Out Your Soul, the elusive Falling Down, where Noel questions his religious belief. Up next is the George Harrison influenced, Gem Archer penned, To Be Where There's Life, a song that doesn't include any guitars, but relies mostly on bass, sitars, and Zak Starkey's drums. The song does feature the best singing by Liam on the entire album in my own humble opinion. Speaking of Liam, the next song is his second where he's credited as songwriter. The song is Ain't Got Nothin', and even though I despised the song when it first leaked online about 3 months ago, I've come to appreciate its straightforwardness. The song is about the fight Liam was invloved in a Munich hotel in 2002, and includes, as a result, Liam screaming and cussing in faded out vocals near the end of the song as to act out the fight. Andy Bell's The Nature of Reality is next, and it is one of my personal favorites on the album. A loud cool rocker, layered with cool guitar riffs influenced by The Beatles and to some extent Led Zeppelin. It succeeds thanks to Liam's snarling lines like "The nature of reality is pure subjective fantasy". It's also the closest sounding song to Definitely Maybe, particulary the song Columbia. The final song on the album is Soldier On, the third song written by Liam, which after repeated listenings will reveal its depth, and a fantastic way to end another Oasis classic album.
My final verdict on this album is that it is massive! Oasis are definitely back with a vengeance. For those who've had doubts about Oasis's legitamacy as one of the greatest rock bands of our time, this album will, and should, wash all that away!
I'm mad for it all over again!
Highly recommended

Who We Touch Review

Who We Touch

A blistering guitar riff which soon morphs into a catchy retro Rock song on "Love is ending" opens the new CD by UK Rockers Charlatans. Comprising 10 tracks, other upbeat songs are the sixties-sounding harmonious "My foolish pride", "Sincerity" (with a shouty chorus), "Trust in desire" (which starts off an acoustic ballad) and the breezy "When I wonder".
"Your pure soul" is an acoustic/organ-drenched ballad. Other standouts are the Psychedelic Folky ballad "Oh!" and the part woozy experimental "You can swim" followed by the hidden spoken "On the threshold".
"Who we touch", truly touching.

What a journey it has been since the band's debut album Some Friendly (1990), and the breakthrough hit, 'The Only One I Know'...Formed a year earlier by Marlin Blunt, the Charlatans were instantly thrust into the limelight. It was a fresh and exciting time with a groundswell of music from the Manchester scene which gripped the UK and the world for years!Their eleventh studio album, and first to have a 'proper' North American release in almost a decade, Who We Touch ranks as the Charlatan's boldest to date, radically broadening their aesthetic. Produced by world-renowned bassist and studio wiz, Youth (McCartney, the Verve, more), Who We Touch is a 'soulful voyage', a journey through moods uplifting and profound, dark and delirious, which ultimately concludes in blissful optimism. The first emphasis track and video from Who We Touch, 'Love Is Ending' is a world class song while the rest of the album speaks of reconciliation ('Oh') with complex time signatures and continues into the ambience of 'You Can Swim' and then into the hidden track 'I Sing The Body Eclectic' featuring vocals by Crass' Penny Rimbauld! So, existentially, culturally, commercially, Who We Touch is a big record for The Charlatans. In places, you may hear echoes, or homages, reflecting music the band collectively hold dear The Stooges, The Byrds, the Madchester sound - but they are still unmistakably themselves, only remodelled, reimagined, re-energized.Now, after that journey through the past, the onward march continues ...

The DVD has 3 features on it:
(1)The video for "Are you in?"
(2)Behind the scenes of the tour thats about 17 minutes long
(3)A discography of all the dvds released
This limited release also has the only feature (the key) to unlock the never-before-seen nighttime version of "Are you in" video. So should you buy it? I did.

Odelay (Dlx) (Exp) Review

Odelay (Dlx) (Exp)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So let's get this out of the way quickly: Odelay is one of the best albums of the 1990s, and is very deserving of the deluxe treatment. And this release comes tantalizing close to actually doing the album justice, collecting (or purporting to collect) non album tracks, B-sides, and other errata to flesh out the Odelay portrait. There's enough wrong here, though, to make one question the $30 purchase price (and to wonder why exactly this thing was in the works for so long)...and if you haven't heard Odelay, you're probably better off grabbing one of the thousands of cheap copies of the original that're floating around.
First, the booklet. I happen to find the "interviews" to be sort of senseless, but I can see someone enjoying them. More problematic is that the lyrics that populate the booklet have been taken directly from a fan-site, errors and all. Universal claims that this was a mistake that should have never made it past the layout phase. I agree wholeheartedly...but it did, and so early buyers (or, perhaps, all buyers) of this disc get a distinctly compromised package. Great!
There's been a lot of discussion about the above issue, but not quite as much discussion about the fact that several songs here *differ* from the original Odelay we've grown to love. Apparently, the compilers grabbed rough mixes of several of the songs (and/or decided to remix parts of the album). The differences range from the subtle (the beeps that begin "The New Pollution" utilize a different sample) to the incredibly obvious ("Hotwax" suddenly has a very evident double-tracked vocal). Why? I can't find anything in the liners that explain why the deluxe edition of "Odelay" changes so much random stuff around in the original album. Given the other issues attendant in this set, I'm willing to bet it was carelessness at play here.
...because there's more where this came from! So we get some B-sides and unreleased tracks. Fantastic! Except where's Diskobox, which was a bonus track on several international editions of the album? It's nowhere to be found here. Worse yet--and I happen to think this is really freakin' inexcusable--several of the tracks that *ARE* here are taken from lossy (i.e. MP3 or AAC) sources. Deadweight and Clock, for example, have noticeable MP3 artifacts, and the corresponding poor frequency response...heck, "Clock" has some DAE artifacts at the beginning, to boot. Was this set assembled by having some guy go on the internet and download MP3s of some of the rarities?
And so on. It's nice, I'll admit, and it's great to finally have some of these B-sides get a re-airing. The idea of charging $30 for something so poorly put together, though, is what energizes the continued appearance of record companies as out of touch, greedy, and incompetent. In the days of ICE and CD Watchdog, this set would have generated letters for *months*...in this day and age, internet warnings will have to suffice.
Summary: If you haven't yet experienced Odelay, run run run to the store and get a cheap used copy of the album. This set's exorbitant price, poor liner notes, and sound issues (as well as incorrect mixes for the original album) make it a lousy way to get acquainted with the original work.

Beck'S major label debut, MELLOW GOLD, introduced him in 1994 but it was ODELAY two years later that became a bellwether for the alternative rock movement. Now, a dozen years after its original release, ODELAY has been expanded into a two-CD DELUXE EDITION with the addition of two never-before-released tracks, a soundtrack contribution, an earlier indie-issued track, and 15 recordings heard on U.K., Japanese and Australian albums, singles, and EPs never released in the U.S. Voted Best Album of the Year in The Village Voice Jazz & Pop Critics Poll and Grammy winner for Best Alternative Music Performance, Odelay charted Top 20 and earned double platinum. "Where It's At," which won the Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, and "The New Pollution" charted Top 10 Modern Rock, "Jack-Ass" Top 20 and "Devil's Haircut" Top 30.

One of the most versatile contemporary singer-songwriters touring America (in 2001 he racked up over 80,000 miles on the road), Martin Sexton's Live Wide Open showcases his amazing presence live. Recorded mostly at the Park West in Chicago, the album carries through the various highs and lows of Sexton's voice and songwriting moods. "Beast In Me" is particularly funky, while "Can't Stop Thinking About You" drags the listener into the neon nights and smoke-filled rooms of heavyhearted desperation. Throughout the album, Sexton's vocal and guitar performance is practically flawless. Sexton groupies may be let down by the track selection and implimentation, but this is certainly a great place from which to begin listening to Martin. Personally, this is the finest live recording I have ever heard, both in sound quality and performance.

Strange Little Girls Review

Strange Little Girls

I'm not sure I'll ever completely grasp Tori Amos' vision for this album. Strange Little Girls is an record of cover songs, and as I understand it, Amos wanted to give a female perspective to how men see women in music. Either the gender politics are beyond me, or she didn't do it quite right (I'll wager it's the former). She definitely hits the bull's-eye a few times though. The song that best accomplishes her goal is her harrowing rendition of "'97 Bonnie & Clyde," Eminem's vicious song about a man who kills his wife and throws her in the sea to get rid of the body. Amos's naked delivery of the song, hushed, spoken vocals over a spooky strings sample, is downright frightening. I think that fact that it makes me uncomfortable to listen to it is a testament to her success.
"Raining Blood" is one of the most shocking songs here. The original, by "extreme" metal band Slayer, was full of fierce vocals and crushing guitars. Here, Amos strips it to nothing but a piano and a weird bass synthesizer, and ironically injects the song with more menace and evil than the original ever had. It's a creepy cover that plays out more like the soundtrack to a nightmare than a song.
Amos' alteration of tone with these songs often changes them radically. What was an innocent little song before becomes threatening, wrenching, or indignant. Think back to the Crucify EP, where Tori completely warped Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in a way that completely changed the impact of the song (at least for me). That's the effect she's going for, I figure. Her experimentation doesn't always work though. "Heart of Gold" is so cacophonous and the vocals so awkward that I can't really appreciate it. "Real Men" is pretty, but quite similar to the original. Even when I don't understand the message, I appreciate the lovely singing and minimalistic music. "Enjoy the Silence," "Rattlesnakes," and "Time" are all beautiful songs, even if Amos' implications of sex are beyond my meager brain.
I wouldn't say I'm disappointed, mainly because I wasn't even sure what to expect. I like this album, even if I must concede to not entirely understanding it. Artistically, she probably knows what she's doing. Even so, I'm eager for another release of original material.

Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King (Super Deluxe Edition) Review

Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King (Super Deluxe Edition)

First of all, let me just say that I am NOT one of those sycophants who automatically give anything by Dave Matthews Band five stars and just rave about how they're the best and anything they do is just the greatest thing ever. While I don't think "Stand Up" and "Everyday" were as bad as some of the reviews I've read, those albums were obviously not their best work. So I was anxious (and a little nervous) to see what this album would bring.
I needn't have worried; Dave Matthews Band are back with a vengeance. There is an energy, a vibe, a passion, a groove that is present on this album that had been missing on the stuff that followed "Before These Crowded Streets". I've read that there were tensions in the band over the last couple years, and that at one point they were on the verge of breaking up. If that's the case, I guess it's true that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. After "Grux", a prelude showcasing since-departed saxophonist LeRoi Moore, the album kicks right into "Shake Me Like a Monkey", a flat-out rocker that allows the whole band to shine. After that, the album never really lets up; other stand-out tracks include "Funny the Way It Is", "Why I Am", "Alligator Pie" and "Seven". There are others great songs too but I've only listened to the album once so I haven't tied all the titles to all the songs yet.
Bottom line: if you've ever liked Dave Matthews Band at any point in their history, you will really like this album. They've got their fire back, and they know it: I watched the show they did at the Beacon Theatre in NYC last night, and you can really tell they love these songs and are having fun playing together again. Pick this album up, and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet… Highlights include the funk-rock rave-up 'Shake Me Like a Monkey,' the stirring ballad 'Lying in the Hands of God,' the swampy rocker 'Alligator Pie (Cockadile),' radio-friendly fare like 'Why I Am,' which features playful horns over a solid rock riff and a hooky chorus, and 'Funny the Way It Is,' which parlays a subtle intro into a soaring, syncopated anthem."
