First of all, let me just say that I am NOT one of those sycophants who automatically give anything by Dave Matthews Band five stars and just rave about how they're the best and anything they do is just the greatest thing ever. While I don't think "Stand Up" and "Everyday" were as bad as some of the reviews I've read, those albums were obviously not their best work. So I was anxious (and a little nervous) to see what this album would bring.
I needn't have worried; Dave Matthews Band are back with a vengeance. There is an energy, a vibe, a passion, a groove that is present on this album that had been missing on the stuff that followed "Before These Crowded Streets". I've read that there were tensions in the band over the last couple years, and that at one point they were on the verge of breaking up. If that's the case, I guess it's true that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. After "Grux", a prelude showcasing since-departed saxophonist LeRoi Moore, the album kicks right into "Shake Me Like a Monkey", a flat-out rocker that allows the whole band to shine. After that, the album never really lets up; other stand-out tracks include "Funny the Way It Is", "Why I Am", "Alligator Pie" and "Seven". There are others great songs too but I've only listened to the album once so I haven't tied all the titles to all the songs yet.
Bottom line: if you've ever liked Dave Matthews Band at any point in their history, you will really like this album. They've got their fire back, and they know it: I watched the show they did at the Beacon Theatre in NYC last night, and you can really tell they love these songs and are having fun playing together again. Pick this album up, and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King CD Bonus CD (4 never before released tracks) "Big Whiskey Documentary" DVD 16 page CD booklet 24 page saddle-stitched booklet (Tribute to LeRoi Moore) 40 page perfect-bound photo book 14 prints of drawings by Dave Matthews; one for each song Everything packaged together in a special collector's box.Produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), Big Whiskey has been hailed by Rolling Stone as the group\'s "heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally," which went on to note: "Throughout, Carter Beauford beats out elaborate, propulsive groves; bassist Stefan Lessard lays down Flea-style funk bass lines; violinist Boyd Tinsley plays cresting, intense runs; and Matthews mirrors Moore\'s saxophone lines with scatlike singing." Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet… Highlights include the funk-rock rave-up 'Shake Me Like a Monkey,' the stirring ballad 'Lying in the Hands of God,' the swampy rocker 'Alligator Pie (Cockadile),' radio-friendly fare like 'Why I Am,' which features playful horns over a solid rock riff and a hooky chorus, and 'Funny the Way It Is,' which parlays a subtle intro into a soaring, syncopated anthem."

I love Kenny Chesney, but this one is a little melancholy on the one hand and recklessly beer soaked on the other...not my fave

Live at Luther College Review

Hearing this album, I only wish I had been live at Luther College.
There's a spirit of playfulness and genuine fun about the performers which easily translates onto the CD and lets the listener know that these guys have the greatest jobs on the planet. You can tell, especially on tracks like "Little Thing" and "Ants Marching", that they genuinely love what they do. Not only do they frequently joke with the audience, but they take their music along decidedly frisky pathways. Their music soars with an improvisational ease in which Dave Matthew's voice is as elastic as Tim Reynold's guitar.
I've read in other reviews that this album is, perhaps, only for Dave Matthews fans, but I would have to disagree. This is a fine album to start one's appreciation of Matthews. The connection they were obviously able to make with the listeners at Luther College is infectious: you can't help but like performers who were so entirely adored by their audience.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that they're able to play like the devil harboring a speed habit, either.

The Imagine Project Review

The Imagine Project

It's not always projects studded with superstars are artistically frugal and satisfying. But here Herbie Hancock and producer/bassist Larry Klein have collected a host of renowned singers and musicians for a truly creative and impressive album. And a CD with an uplifting message of love, peace and understanding. In many ways refelecting Hancock's years long immersion in Buddhism.
In the vein of Joe Zawinul or Santana this is really a melting pot of world music influences, putting an African spin on the title track, while Dylan's "The Times They Are A changing" is presented as a fascinating mix of Irish - vocalist Lisa Hannigan and The Chieftains - with a surprise African finish by the intricate guitarist Lionel Loueke.
There is pure Brazilian jazz-pop with Céu, a surprisingly psychedelic "Tommorow Never Knows" with Dave Matthews. A grooving take on the old Joe Cocker hit "Space Captain" with Susan Tedeschi and her husband guitar star Derek Trucks . While the closing track "The Song Goes On", recorded in Mumbai, is in a beautiful Indian space, Hancock and old friend Wayne Shorter teaming up with sitar goddess Anoushka Shankar while Chaka Khan and K. S. Chitra shares the vocals.
Pink, Seal, Jeff Beck, Alex AcunĂ£, India.Arie, Marcus Miller, Los Lobos and a host of others contribute to the fun. And lots of praise for Klein's once again superb production: multi layered and crystal clear and yet with a certain warmth and 'live feeling'. And ofc over and around it all the impressive piano and keyboard work of the man himself.

OK OK While I'd like to say I'm a huge Dave fan, I will admit that unlike some of the people that will buy this CD, I only have been to 6 concerts and own 10-12 CDs including 5 live discs.
To most people that is a lot, but to Dave Matthew addicts that might not. I know that there are some people so obsessed that they probably have all 54 or so albums (90% of them live) that have been released.
That being said I have to say that this album in my opinion is well deserving of a 5 star rating for the following reasons:
a) Sound Quality - 5 stars. The sound quality is perfect. Just enough crowd and the band is captured well. Not to much voice not too much band. Perfect.
b) Song Selection - 5 Stars. A Few old songs a few classics, some Lillywhite stuff, but plenty of newer stuff. I also own the Live Trax Fenway album that has 4 cds. I mean I love Dave, but 4 discs is too many. Dave plays so many songs I realize it's tough to pare down a weekend of concerts into one CD, and that is why this disc gets 5 stars. Perfect paring. And yes there are some new tracks on here as well!
c) Performance - 4.5 stars - Comparing this disc to the Luther College Tim Reynolds disc is tough since that was the standard, but despite Tim not shining as bright as he did on that album he still adds plenty to this disc as would be expected. Also I notice that it seems like everyone kind of brings their A game. Not sure if it's Tims presence or what but it is definitely noticeable. And yes there's a little Dave speak, but overall very good. And did I hear a piano in there...
d) Value - 5 stars - Amazon has this for $11.99 that is great for a new release live disc from DMB that contains a couple new songs, but more importantly new live versions of recent songs. I mean if people are comparing this to Live at Luther College from 7-8 years ago then you know it's worth the $.
Overall this CD is great. My favorite still remains the Red Rocks two disc. For the simple fact that at the time it was awesome. It is still good, despite the fact that having heard all those songs played over and over in so many live versions has made it lose its luster. However as a new release live disc, I don't think there's a two disc release from that Dave to date that was greeted with so much widespread enjoyment as that albums was way back in 1997.

What's the point of advertising that the concert DVD was shot with 10 HD cameras if it isn't available in BluRay?
