Le Tigre Review

Le Tigre
Average Reviews:

I've never written a fan letter before, but since listening to this album, I'm very tempted to write the three talented women of Le Tigre and thank them for reclaiming music as a medium that can inform, challenge, entertain, and inspire.
Not only are the songs themselves danceable and full of great melodies, but the lyrics are worth a close listen. The names invoked on "Hot Topic" (not unlike the [in]famous Billy Joel "We Didn't Start the Fire") are worthy of investigation-- from Sleater-Kinney to David Wojnarowicz. And the simple poetry of "Les and Ray" (the final song on the album) is truly touching.
As always, Kathleen Hanna is a major force behind the group's sound and energy, but the other two members are not to be ignored for their contributions. Sadie Benning was recently profiled in Time magazine of all places, and Johanna Fateman is the group's connection to the New York art scene. All three combine to produce an album that's thought-provoking-- but actually a real joy to listen to. One of my favorite albums of all time (and I'm actually a classical musician!).

Lil Band O Gold Review

Looking for the rock in swamp rock? Be prepared to look hard here. Lil' Band O' Gold, billing itself as a Swamp Rock supergroup, turns out to be slightly off base in this release. The CD is heavy with ballads and laments, with sad songs of lost love and mournful dirges taking up slightly more than half the songlist. If swamp blues are what you're looking for though, you'll be satisfied, especially with the wonderful vocal work, both lead and backup, of "First You Cry". C.C. Adcock (who co-produced this recording) provides his usual gritty guitar sound; the mournful pedal-steel work is that of Richard Comeaux. Of the 'up' tunes on this effort, "Shirley" was a surprise, with the innocent lyrics and raw sound of early 60's pop. A Cajun dance-hall standard written by the late, great Dewey Balfa, "Parlez Nous a Boire" ('let us talk of drinking, and not of marriage') gets a kicked-up treatment here, with driving bass line, hard-edged vocals and an intriguing sax opener. "7 Nights 2 Rock", a familiar rockabilly number, beckons you to the dance floor, but could have used another rockin' number as its follow-up, not the undistinguished 'slow dance' of "Dreamgirl". The swamp rock highlights here? "Allons Rock N Roll" and "Cajun Twist" -- both benefit from Steve Riley vocal and accordion work, and great backing by the St. Martin Horns (Dickie Landry, David Greeley, and Pat Breaux). If you're not up and dancing to the "Cajun Twist" cher, your feet must not work.

I am a huge fan of this band and have all of their cd's but this live document could've been much much better. At times Pollard is way too drunk and yea yea yea I know thats part of his persona but cmon pal, you sounded like an obnoxious drunk frat boy on Kareoke night. If this was supposed to be a farewell performance and gift to the fans...treat us with respect and keep your booze in check until after the lights go down!

3 Rounds and a Sound Review

"Three Rounds and a Sound" is surely the best album I've heard this year -- indeed, possibly the best album I've come across since my dearly beloved Rheostatics broke up. It's fabulously beautiful, deep and sad and lovely, and catchy all at the same time. The melancholy tone of youth at the moment when youth begins to fade. Songs that sound as if they have been patiently waiting for a millenium or more for someone to finally come along and give birth to them. "Oviedo," in particular, could save the life of a desperate man if played at just the right moment. What can I say to capture how good this disc is? If it were a girl I'd leave my wife for her. There. Enough said.

Blind Pilot sounds something like a wistful mix of The Shins with a bit of Iron & Wine folksiness. But these comparisons don't give a full representation of the unbelievable beauty of this album. Don't take our word for it. As Willamette Week immediately proclaimed: 'Every once in a while a band comes along that knocks me so flat on my ass that I wish I was in the PR business or an A&R guy instead of a critic, so I could throw myself wholeheartedly behind it. Blind Pilot [gave] me that sensation. Frontman Israel Nebeker sounds like a less theatric version of James Mercer: every bit as sincere and captivating, with vocal control and style to spare. And this band has songs coming out of its ears: deep, clever guitar-driven tunes fleshed out with soaring horn arrangements. Listening to and thinking about these songs has kept me awake at night lately.' It would be hard to imagine a better review, but 3 Rounds and a Sound is just that good.

TMBG graduate from drum machines and samples to a full band on this album, and the results are great. Purists label this TMBG's "bad" album, but I believe the full band lends these songs a shot of adrenalin. The lyrics are as good as ever, and they fit well into their new, energetic fixtures.
So many good songs -- the bells of "Destination Moon," the trippy distorted vocal on "Self called nowhere," the theremin on "AKA Driver." There are big rock songs and small gems throughout. Even a seeming throw-away like "Meet James Ensor" is a perfect pop confection (and probably the only song of that genre about a famous dutch artist).
I don't get the jibe "if that's your idea of clever" in the Amazon review. If an album that incorporates Alice Cooper, James Ensor, and Alan Ginsberg in the same 18 songs isn't clever, one wonders what is.
If you can deal with the fact that this album has a different sound than the first four TMBGs, you'll love this stuff.

I can't recommend this album enough. This album has alot of beautiful folk music mixed in with experimental noise and melodies. A friend told me about this album, and at first I thought it was ok, but it's definately a grower. Now I can't get enough of it.
I'm not great at explaining individual songs, so I'll just recommend some songs to get a good idea of their sound. Try these first:
Running, returning (a beautiful epic song)
Italy
Shoes
Franny/You're Human
Hidden Track
Before and Again
I'll be on the water
The only songs on this record that I don't like too much are Suchness and Part of Corey. They're still good songs, just not as stellar as the rest of the tracks. And I can't say I like the burst of white noise in the beginning of one of those songs.
I'd give this album a 4 and 1/2, but since there's no 4 and 1/2 rating, I'll give it a 5. The good far outweighs the bad in my opinion. If you're looking for something new, and you are a fan of experimental folk music, I'd say you should definately give it a shot.

Attention 30 somethings... sick of that angry, pouting, self-glorifying, heavily marketed and over-produced garage music? I am... and I bless the day when the cocky angst-ridden cd store kid pulled this gem out of a haystack of INDIE releases... and presented it to me... smirking at me like I might be too lame to appreciate it...
SHTYM creates very clever music - simple yet memorable melodies... very creative lyrics that fully employ your tacit knowledge.
This music does not rock... it does not make you feel like you are flying, fighting or saving the world... it won't set you on fire... But it's what you want to reach for when you are alone...
You'll listen to it a lot. It will never really make it into your storage bin... it will probably stay surfaced in close proximity to your stereo for easy and frequent access... You'll be anxiously awaiting their next release...
This was the first CD I purchased from them... I love it. I have since purchased all of them... A few other tracks from other albums that you really don't want to miss out on are: A Hit in Sweden, Super (from Numbers and Mumbles) and Dersmormos... (from discosadness)

The fourth record from this Brooklyn band "...recalls the futuristic feeling of Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie...that intellectual battle with impending modernity and the feeling of alienation from real humanity explored by Grandaddy and Radiohead...Eno-esque with eerie, fantastical motifs" - Spin. Their brand of quirky indie-pop on previous efforts has garnered critical acclaim and chart topping radio play (#26 on CMJ's Top 200), landed them TV spots on MTV and CBS, and earned them live slots with the likes of American Analog Set, Mates Of State, The Wrens, John Vanderslice, and Headphones, as well as a full tour as main support for Nada Surf. This new record is their first for The Rebel Group. "Cheeky, fuzzy electro-pop" - LA Times. "A delightfully fractured fairytale of Williamsburgian proportions" - Time Out NY. "On a homemade PC, Say Hi assembles slow, statuesque indie rock with analog synthscapes, overlapping distorted guitars and lots of low-end" - Pitchfork.

Guided by Voices - The Electrifying Conclusion (2005) Review

Guided by Voices - The Electrifying Conclusion (2005)
Average Reviews:

Well it's about time Guided By Voices fans get a professionally done live concert video. And just any GbV concert this is not; this is their last show of their "Electrifying Conclusion" tour, putting an end to 21 years of GbV. Having the concert done on New Years Eve, playing just back-to-back songs from their entire catalog, you will feel exhausted when the four hour show comes to an end.
Longtime fans will enjoy the guest appearances of the former band mates, including "14 Cheerleader Coldfront" performed with Tobin Sprout. They play a wide array of songs from all their albums and some more obscure stuff from demo's and EP's. Of course they also do their more commercial-friendly hits like "Glad Girls" and "Teenage F.B.I."
I was suprised by the overall sound quality of this DVD: sounding like it was recorded right out of the onstage mixers. This was not done with just a shaky Hi-8 camcorder from someone in the crowd; this was done with professional equipment from several stage cameras from all different angles.
GbV concerts will always remain as a sentimental opus for the hardcore fans. They involve Pollard and all the band members getting drunk and playing slopilly (just compare the first songs on this DVD to the last). But this is just why they were able to build up such a dedicated following over the years.
This DVD is the last thing people have to remember GbV by. Which is done just right to get the next generation of GbV fans hooked.

Who We Touch Review

A blistering guitar riff which soon morphs into a catchy retro Rock song on "Love is ending" opens the new CD by UK Rockers Charlatans. Comprising 10 tracks, other upbeat songs are the sixties-sounding harmonious "My foolish pride", "Sincerity" (with a shouty chorus), "Trust in desire" (which starts off an acoustic ballad) and the breezy "When I wonder".
"Your pure soul" is an acoustic/organ-drenched ballad. Other standouts are the Psychedelic Folky ballad "Oh!" and the part woozy experimental "You can swim" followed by the hidden spoken "On the threshold".
"Who we touch", truly touching.

What a journey it has been since the band's debut album Some Friendly (1990), and the breakthrough hit, 'The Only One I Know'...Formed a year earlier by Marlin Blunt, the Charlatans were instantly thrust into the limelight. It was a fresh and exciting time with a groundswell of music from the Manchester scene which gripped the UK and the world for years!Their eleventh studio album, and first to have a 'proper' North American release in almost a decade, Who We Touch ranks as the Charlatan's boldest to date, radically broadening their aesthetic. Produced by world-renowned bassist and studio wiz, Youth (McCartney, the Verve, more), Who We Touch is a 'soulful voyage', a journey through moods uplifting and profound, dark and delirious, which ultimately concludes in blissful optimism. The first emphasis track and video from Who We Touch, 'Love Is Ending' is a world class song while the rest of the album speaks of reconciliation ('Oh') with complex time signatures and continues into the ambience of 'You Can Swim' and then into the hidden track 'I Sing The Body Eclectic' featuring vocals by Crass' Penny Rimbauld! So, existentially, culturally, commercially, Who We Touch is a big record for The Charlatans. In places, you may hear echoes, or homages, reflecting music the band collectively hold dear The Stooges, The Byrds, the Madchester sound - but they are still unmistakably themselves, only remodelled, reimagined, re-energized.Now, after that journey through the past, the onward march continues ...

Recorded in 1996 at the Sydney Opera House plaza, "Crowded House" plays their farewell concert to an appreciative crowd of over 120,000. The 24-song set contains amazingly pure and tight sound with Neil Finn's voice at its best. There are no stand-out cuts, as the band gives it best performance to date on every track. It is flawless. The comments from the band to the audience between songs makes this one of the most personable concerts ever recorded. Slight variations on some songs and an accent here and there make the fans sing along throughout. The closing song, "Don't Dream its Over" is as emotional as ever, with shots of the crowd signing along and the band emoting, realizing this really is their last song together. It's one of the best concerts of the last two decades.
The extras include an optional commentary by the band in subtitles. The second disc has a 20-minute documentary about the enormous planning it took to stage this event, mostly narrated by the band's manager. Also included are a few featurettes, a photo gallery and the full "Crowded House" discography. This is one of those collectable packages that you'll never tire of.

In the past year and a half, I have unexpectedly become a Dexter affecionado. It just sort-of-happened (like an unplanned affair). I feel that I need to SHOUT OUT to the world that Dexter could give Elvis Presley a run for his money. Dexter is on a hot-streak that shows no signs of abating. Like the wonderful CD that Dexter just recenly created with the New Romans ("Night Tides"-which you should also get), this ultra-fine album shows the work of an Artist who is finding harmonic synchrony with his limitless creativity, his maturity, and his real sister Sara (there is no way that you can't dig Sara's contributions).
The album mixes 50's pop/soul/blues/instrumentals/country/lounge-crooning and whatever else gets in the Dynamic-Duo's way. Dex gets support from major-league names such as Exene Cervenka, Cat Power, and Neko Case. There is even some Polish dance music for alt-Polka fans. Some of the harsher sonic aspects found on earlier releases have been toned down and the music is easy on the ears, while continuing to push the boundaries of creativity. I'm a DJ and I will be playing this CD alot on my show (Mojo Ballroom on WCOM). It is worth your while to plunk your hard-earned cash on this. Catch these folks when they tour across the country to see what rock and roll is supposed to be like. Dex and Sara I hope you conquer the world, Love Famous Jonny Mambo.

I saw the premiere at the TriBeCa film festival and enjoyed the film immensely - and notably so did more tepid fans in tow. It's beautifully filmed, well-paced, and of course nicely scored. It provides an often funny and sometimes sad look into the realities of band life and the mixed emotions of deciding it's Time to Quit. The film is a fitting send-off for one of my favorite bands, and in many ways the indie pop era and the lost state of mind of Downtown NYC.

Laced with moments of both humor and melancholia, Tell Me Do You Miss Me earnestly exposes the underbelly of a touring rock band in their final days together. Odelay (Dlx) (Exp) Review

Odelay (Dlx) (Exp)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So let's get this out of the way quickly: Odelay is one of the best albums of the 1990s, and is very deserving of the deluxe treatment. And this release comes tantalizing close to actually doing the album justice, collecting (or purporting to collect) non album tracks, B-sides, and other errata to flesh out the Odelay portrait. There's enough wrong here, though, to make one question the $30 purchase price (and to wonder why exactly this thing was in the works for so long)...and if you haven't heard Odelay, you're probably better off grabbing one of the thousands of cheap copies of the original that're floating around.
First, the booklet. I happen to find the "interviews" to be sort of senseless, but I can see someone enjoying them. More problematic is that the lyrics that populate the booklet have been taken directly from a fan-site, errors and all. Universal claims that this was a mistake that should have never made it past the layout phase. I agree wholeheartedly...but it did, and so early buyers (or, perhaps, all buyers) of this disc get a distinctly compromised package. Great!
There's been a lot of discussion about the above issue, but not quite as much discussion about the fact that several songs here *differ* from the original Odelay we've grown to love. Apparently, the compilers grabbed rough mixes of several of the songs (and/or decided to remix parts of the album). The differences range from the subtle (the beeps that begin "The New Pollution" utilize a different sample) to the incredibly obvious ("Hotwax" suddenly has a very evident double-tracked vocal). Why? I can't find anything in the liners that explain why the deluxe edition of "Odelay" changes so much random stuff around in the original album. Given the other issues attendant in this set, I'm willing to bet it was carelessness at play here.
...because there's more where this came from! So we get some B-sides and unreleased tracks. Fantastic! Except where's Diskobox, which was a bonus track on several international editions of the album? It's nowhere to be found here. Worse yet--and I happen to think this is really freakin' inexcusable--several of the tracks that *ARE* here are taken from lossy (i.e. MP3 or AAC) sources. Deadweight and Clock, for example, have noticeable MP3 artifacts, and the corresponding poor frequency response...heck, "Clock" has some DAE artifacts at the beginning, to boot. Was this set assembled by having some guy go on the internet and download MP3s of some of the rarities?
And so on. It's nice, I'll admit, and it's great to finally have some of these B-sides get a re-airing. The idea of charging $30 for something so poorly put together, though, is what energizes the continued appearance of record companies as out of touch, greedy, and incompetent. In the days of ICE and CD Watchdog, this set would have generated letters for *months*...in this day and age, internet warnings will have to suffice.
Summary: If you haven't yet experienced Odelay, run run run to the store and get a cheap used copy of the album. This set's exorbitant price, poor liner notes, and sound issues (as well as incorrect mixes for the original album) make it a lousy way to get acquainted with the original work.

Fuzz-rockers Grizzly Bear know how to keep people's attention until their next album -- in this case, putting out an album's worth of odds and ends.
And "Friend EP" is no more or less than that -- a jumble of covers (both theirs and other people's), alternate versions, and even a demo. It has one dud track, but the rest are pretty much mellow, arty little gems, sometimes rendered into something almost unrecognizable.
One of the biggest things here is the alternate versions of their songs -- it starts with the rippling, dreamlike, almost celestial version of "Alligator," as well as an electric-edged "Little Brother" and smoothly flowing "Shift." The final song is a lo-fi, home-recorded rendition of "Deep Blue Sea," which relies heavily on strummed acoustic guitar and faint whistling.
The only sour note is the Terrible vs. Nonhorse: Sounds Edit remix of "Plans," which is basically a big squiggle of psychotic flute, clatters, blown fuses, doorbells, and what sounds like a banjo dissolving.
Grizzly Bear also turn out a spooky, weirdly wistful cover of Carole King's "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)". Additionally they also toss out a little demo called "Granny Diner," an ambient cluster of fuzz, meandering guitar, with a few ripples of soft organ and mournful vocals near the end. Not a bad song, but you can hear why it didn't make the cut.
And finally, there's a trio of bands covering Grizzly Bear's songs -- Band of Horses, CSS, and Atlas Sound. CSS rework "Plans" into a tight electronic squiggly dancefest, while Band of Horses go in the opposite direction, turning the same song into a music-hall country tune. And Atlas Sound turns "Knife" into a beautiful, hypnotically ambient pop tune.
"Friend" is not an EP in the sense of being short, but in the sense of not really being an album -- Grizzly Bear crammed plenty of material on here, and while it doesn't give quite the satisfied feeling of "Yellow House" or "Horn of Plenty," it's made up of individual songs that are, mostly, brilliant reminders of why we love them.
Their songs have the usual components of their music -- ringing guitar, flickering organ, subtle drums, bass, some synth, often buried under a layer of shifting fuzz. Even the angular edges of "Little Brother" doesn't disrupt their signature sound, and the smooth vocals all four contribute adds to their mournful, slightly dreamlike ambience.
In fact, they only really have problems in the aforementioned "Plans" remix, and the long stretch of verrrrrrryyyy sloooowwwwww buildup in "Granny Diner" before getting to the brilliant final two minutes. And the other bands do a good job adding their distintive sounds to Grizzly Bear too -- folky banjo, rapid techno, and a darker dreamy pop sound.
"Friend" is basically a collection of odds and ends, cobbled from Grizzly Bear and their pals. And until they come out with another album, it'll have to tide me over.

This actually is one of the best albums Sebadoh would release. The music and sound is totally laid-back compared to something like Bubble and Scrape or Smash your head on the Punk Rock. One reviewer said it was a "subtle pop classic" and that is the exact definition of the album itself. It's way more subtle and easier then other Sebadoh albums.
This actually had the first Sebadoh tune I've heard and this is the second last album I bought. The song was Skull and I heard it in the opener of the skateboarding video Anthology (by Transworld magazine). I liked the song at the beginning and thought it flowed really well with what was going on. I would later find out after about 2 years that it was from one of my favorite bands.
Even though this is way more relaxed then the other albums, it doesn't mean that Lou won't deliver some harsh (But cynical) lyrics and some pretty powerful songs. Tunes like Careful, License to confuse, Not a friend and Magnet's Coil all have a unique sound with some very, very good lyrics. Careful is almost devastating to hear but it's all so simple at the end. Not a Friend is something we all can relate too sometimes with friendships. License to Confuse is just 2 minutes of cynsism from Lou. Magnet's Coil isn't as harsh as most of the album, but the opening base line is extremely catchy. Then there's the easier songs with the easier sound. Skull, Got it, S Soup, Rebound, Dramamine and Together or Alone. Together or Alone just gives me a feeling of emptyness but it's a great song. Skull is the first song I heard from Sebadoh, great tune but nothing to crank. Rebound is just awesome. S Soup and Dramamine somehow connect within listens.
One song that sticks out though is Give Up. Starts off like a heavy metal track then goes right into the normal Sebadoh type ranting. It's my favorite track on the album next to Careful and Not a Friend.
Totally recommended for some great songs with even better lyrics. I wish Sebadoh were still around....

Helmed by the band and, for the first time, Jacknife Lee (co-producer of U2’s ’05 Grammy® Album Of The Year How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, The Hives and Snow Patrol), Accelerate puts the 2007 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame group once again firmly behind the wheel of alternative rock, a genre R.E.M. helped invent.Accelerate is available as a CD-only in a Softpak; a CD+DVD that features a 64-page book and the Vincent Moon film 6 Days (which includes behind-the-scenes footage and performance pieces of various songs on the album) plus two bonus tracks "Red Head Walking" and "Airliner."
