Grace -Around the World (CD/DVD)

There's a telling moment just seconds into the DVD, right before the first live performance on "Grace-Around The World". It's January 17, 1995: Jeff and his band are arranged in the background of the opening shot, poised to begin the song "Grace" after the BBC announcer in the foreground reads a bit of copy about Jeff into the camera. The announcer fills the lower right foreground while Jeff is at the far left in the background, standing relatively still, like the other band members. A few sentences into the introduction, the BBC announcer inevitably mentions Jeff's biological father, the late Tim Buckley. Look at Jeff in the background at the edge of the screen when she does this and you'll see his sudden overhead, emphatic, two-middle-fingers-held-high salute. What better way to illustrate Jeff's discomfort with his genetic legacy and his insistence on being viewed independently from the father he never really knew than this unmistakable gesture!
This CD/DVD release captures much of the wide-ranging and powerful musical ability of Jeff and his band live as it happened, generally around the first half or so of a nearly 18 month odyssey promoting the Grace disc all over the place. European TV appearances dominate this collection; it appears that networks in places like Germany and England were more likely to give extensive airtime to a new artist like Jeff. This material is priceless for its ability to convey the depth of feeling of Jeff's music and the extraordinary tightness of the band. Since he never really performed before cameras again after the "Grace" tours, this and the Jeff Buckley - Live in Chicago DVD (the performance of "Lover, You Should Have Come Over" is the same as on that DVD) are really the only usually-well-lighted, mostly "studio quality" visual evidence available of Jeff and his band in action. Some of the material shows how songs had begun to be extended or toughened up as compared to the studio versions recorded in 1993/1994. "Eternal Life" from March of '95 is already in its "road version" form: the performance is that of a hard rock/nearly punk song that is considerably faster and louder than the "Grace" version. "Mojo Pin" from February of `95 sports an extended, extemporaneous solo intro using his voice and some delay guitar effects that Jeff had begun to tack onto the front of the song in live performances (another example of this is the so-called "Chocolate Version" of the song found on The Grace EPs).
Fans of Jeff can't go wrong with this release. Those not sure of Jeff's importance or meaning this far from his demise should seek this out to judge for themselves what this material conveys on the subject of Jeff's legacy. It's hard to imagine viewing (or listening to the CD portion of) this and being unmoved or remaining unconvinced of Jeff's bountiful gifts.
The only downside to this set is that it is very likely to cause the viewer or listener to experience a renewed wave of grief reflecting the magnitude of Jeff's loss: The Grace songs (and two here that were not on the "Grace" disc including an instrumental version of the song "Vancouver" in the bonus section, a vocal version of which show up on the posthumous release Sketches (For My Sweetheart the Drunk)) point to a bright future that we've known for over twelve years now will never come to be. There's a palpable sense of an unfulfilled promise here--the promise of a long life and a career featuring lots of future Jeff Buckley songs and stellar performances---a promise that was wiped out in one frivolous moment on the evening of May 29, 1997 in Wolf River Harbor, near the Mississippi river in Memphis. The irony of that event is that Jeff's zest for spontaneous, caution-be-damned, life-affirming experiences led directly to his drowning. Wherever he is now, he'd likely be pleased to know that people still seek to re-live and re-experience the fleeting moments preserved on video/audio tape that he left us in the final years of his life.

Nearly fifteen years ago, the world was introduced to a young singer/songwriter from New York named Jeff Buckley. His debut album Grace became one of the most acclaimed and influential albums of his generation. To promote the album, Jeff and his band embarked a seemingly un-ending tour - taking them all over the globe from 1994 to 1996.Because the album had no "hit single", Jeff was constantly tinkering with his setlists - both on stage and on TV. He therefore performed almost every track from Grace at least once in his many appearances on local broadcasts around the globe. Now, for the fi rst time, the very best of those performances have been tracked down and compiled into the definitive audio/visual document of the Grace world tour.

One of the most versatile contemporary singer-songwriters touring America (in 2001 he racked up over 80,000 miles on the road), Martin Sexton's Live Wide Open showcases his amazing presence live. Recorded mostly at the Park West in Chicago, the album carries through the various highs and lows of Sexton's voice and songwriting moods. "Beast In Me" is particularly funky, while "Can't Stop Thinking About You" drags the listener into the neon nights and smoke-filled rooms of heavyhearted desperation. Throughout the album, Sexton's vocal and guitar performance is practically flawless. Sexton groupies may be let down by the track selection and implimentation, but this is certainly a great place from which to begin listening to Martin. Personally, this is the finest live recording I have ever heard, both in sound quality and performance.

Mystery White Boy Review

If you own Grace, aren't prone to purchasing an artist's entire collection, and may not be partial to live albums why click to order this CD?
Because each track is a showcase of Buckley's uninhibited, without apology, take it or leave it songwriting, interpretation, and rendering. Because it is clear producers Michael Tighe and Mary Guibert really worked to construct and produce a better than "best of" live experience. Because audience clutter serves to enhance rather than detract, adding to the emotion Buckley hurls from himself and wrenches from the listener, starting with Dream Brother, perhaps climaxing on Eternal life, and ending breathlessly with Hallelujah/I Know it's Over medley. Or perhaps simply because of the little gem in The Man That Got Away, an Arlen-Gershwin song.
Mystery White Boy is a gift for those of us who never saw Jeff Buckley and his band live.

Grace-Around The World Deluxe Edition (CD/DVD+DVD Documentary Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley) Review

Grace-Around The World Deluxe Edition (CD/DVD+DVD Documentary Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley)

OK, I just bought the deluxe "Grace Around The World" by Jeff Buckley, of course put together by Jeff's Estate (his mom Mary Guibert really), and it's basically good value for yer money, plus it has essential ingredients which make it not exactly a cheap cash-in by Mary but a treasure trove of stuff for Jeff's legion of admirers, new and longtime alike.
Just read the review of the single disc compilation "So Real", and I could understand why people would be frustrated and confused, but I found it to be an ideal introduction for newbies, and it plays as a cool "greatest hits", as an album, so I have no problem with it.
This package "Grace Around The World" will make lots of people happy. It's a 3-disc set, 2 DVDs and 1 CD. DVD 1 has footage of live performances of every "Grace" song performed around the world, mostly all unreleased commercially, plus lots of rare TV appearances on shows like MTV's 120 Minutes, as bonus footage, 2 hours long total. The CD is sort of unnecessary, as it consists of the first 12 performances from the first DVD...I guess to play in your car, on yer stereo and put on yer iPod and computer. The 2nd DVD is the reason to pick up this package...it's the documentary film "Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley", 1 hour long, and screened at different festivals worldwide & won all sorts of awards...the concept is pretty cool, made for no money and by first-time filmmakers, it's about the power behind his musical legacy, about his legion of fans...NOT a biography about Jeff...definitely different. I think I saw a screening of it at the Knitting Factory in NYC, during a tribute get-together set up by his mom, a year or so after his death...which did hit me hard when I heard about it on the radio in 1997...nobody but a small cult of fans had heard of Jeff at the time, and when I heard that announced, I was like HUH??!!?? Jeff died??!!?? What the...??? I've been a huge admirer from the beginning and saw Jeff do an instore appearance/performance at NYC's downtown Tower Records in 1995...I still remember it like it was yesterday...met Jeff afterwards and he was spaced out but really cool and happy to have met me, appreciative too...likewise.
Anyhoo, this package...it's like a DVD boxset, packaged not unlike Tom Petty's 4-disc "Runnin' Down A Dream" BestBuy package. The DVDs come out in a double gatefold enclosure, with a 24-page booklet inside, well-written notes and lots of pics...even an epilogue as to what his bandmates are currently working on and with...outside the gatefold is a large, double-sided poster...one side is the French Grace tour poster...with the full black & white band photo, and the other side is the Australian tour poster with a different band pic...I would NOT hang this sucker up, unless you buy 2 boxsets and frame each poster, representing each side...otherwise, not recommended.
There's also a laminated envelope with the title of this box and logo in silver print on the front of the envelope, sealed with a clear round sticker...inside is more memorabilia...a replica of his Sydney flight boarding pass, a backstage laminate, a small replica of a Columbia press release of his Grace tour, dated June 10, 1994, and 4 nice black & white postcards...pretty cool, all.
All in all, a nice package for the longtime fan...hardcore ones might have this stuff already, but probably on shoddy-sounding & looking bootleg videos...nice to have it in a pretty package for a good value. Mary put her heart into this thing...I met her at that Knitting Factory shindig, and she was quite nice and appreciative to me as I came to the event and I support Jeff's music and art...if people are not happy with this thing, oh well, I am...can't please everybody I guess...just know that it comes across that her heart is in the right place...I believe Jeff would be happy with this package, I really do.
Jeff Buckley, RIP.

Jeff Buckley - Live in Chicago (2000)

Jeff Buckley fans are very lucky to have this sort of a DVD release. It took me a while to really become a Jeff Buckley fan (and now there is no turning back). I remember first borrowing an advance copy of Grace back in 1994 and being seduced by the easily loved Hallelujah (who didn't?) and also So Real, but the rest of that album proved I was unready for such a unique singer. Later on, after Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk came out, I became much more interested. Mystery White Boy further solidified my fascination for his way of doing things, and now, with this Live In Chicago DVD, I am completely convinced. A little late, I admit.
I wonder, while writing this review, if this is the best place to start, for the new-comer. I think it is. Some might initially be turned off by his fluctuating vocals, but later, I guarantee, that will be precisely what you love about him. His compassionate yodels range from a pigeons coo, to a hyena's laugh, to a goldfish burble, to a puma's roar. And his guitar playing can trigger memories of This Mortal Coil, The Mission, and Johnny Marr (he makes two Smiths references on this DVD, one of which is a parody of a Morrissey-style song about policemen! And on Mystery White Boy he welds I Know It's Over to Hallelujah). Whatever hints of influences glisten through his songs, they are undoubtedly his, meaning: It sounds like Jeff Buckley. He and his band bleed through their instruments to produce a dizzying sonic sweep through the central nervous system. And to see this is amazing. His lyrics are the type that take you a while to realize he is lamenting a certain part of your own life (or at least that's how it feels). Lines like, "My Kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder" are so intimate and so precise, you wonder why nobody has come up with it before. And I can't help but wonder when he sings "Father do you hear me, do you know me, do you even care?" (What Will You Say) if he is singing to his father, Tim Buckley, who he did not know.
If you are like me and you enjoy hearing different interpretations to songs you already like, then you will love this film. Notable spots are the strange and hypnotic rendering of Big Star's 1975 hit Kangaroo where he ferociously barks, "You're just like Saint Joan..." with sweat dripping from his hair (on Mystery White Boy he barely whispers the same line, mind you), then after the song is pretty much over, he jams wildly unlike any way you can imaging being appropriate for such a song and does this for some time, ending up by the speakers, playing to them creating the type of feedback you'd expect at a Crazy Horse audition. Then there is the surprise Kick Out The Jams, featuring a goofy guy named Crazy Dave (or something) sharing the vocals then doing the un-Grace-ful bellyflop into the front three rows (I think that sort of stunt is always better witnessed on film than in real life, for obvious reasons). Then again, the audience deserved that sort of hurl. They spend most of the time between songs begging for Jeff to play Hallelujah, and he seems bothered by it. He eventually gives them a piece of his mind (which I will not describe) and seems to play most of the remaining set behind closed eyes, as if, for himself.
The DVD is coupled with a documentary/interview that is captivating. He speaks so tenderly about music, like some do about love. And throughout are performances that are equally haunting. Not to mention the two acoustic versions.
It's good, get it.
