It's about time these guys released a live album. There are many plusses here; First, there are two discs of songs for the price of one. I also like the fact that they didn't take these live recordings and go back into the studio and polish em' up like most bands do. It's loud and raw just like a good Crue show. It takes me back. Love the song selections as well with quite a few gems from the Too Fast For Love days! Very Cool!

Man, X is just not getting the respect it deserves. You would think from some of the reviews on this site that this album is nothing short of terrible and that it deviates so fundamentally from Lep's style that it is not even them. While I do agree that X has a lighter sound than their other blockbusters (Pyro, Hysteria, and absolutely Euphoria), to call this album terrible or even average is a joke and an injustice to Lep.
First of all, I have no idea why so many reviews of X refer to this album as a comeback album (and therefore a disappointment somehow). Where have ya'll been? Euphoria was their comeback album, not X. Euphoria, which was another Mutt Lange collaboration, returned to the sound of Pyromania and Hysteria and is easily their best album since Hysteria. So, stop calling X a comeback album, because it aint.
Next, why do so many people feel the need to corner bands into a particular sound and style? Last I checked, musicians were free people who can experiment with their craft anyway they like. For people to expect Lep to just continue producing the same ole sound album after album is ridiculous. True fans of any band will always be open-minded and try to appreciate why the band is creating the sound they are creating. Seems there are more wanna-be Lep fans out there than real ones.
The new style is precisely why X is such a great album in its own right. It demonstrates that the boys can still create great music without Lange's involvement and it also demonstrates that they can expand their style without compromising their globally unique sound (any one of these tunes, even void of Elliot's voice, is identifiable as Lep almost instantly). Those people who state that this CD is mush and has no intensity to it (or that it does not ROCK) are either crazy or on something. Even the ballads have rich, intricate rock guitar work going on and there are at least a handful of songs on the CD that are as rockin' as anything they've turned out since Pyromania. One must only open their ears and mind to the difference in style and the quality of the songs begin to take hold quickly.
All of the songs on the album are good -- there is not one of them that I don't like. Standouts are Unbelievable, So Beautiful (awesome), Four Letter Word (sounds like a mix of Armaggedon It and Photograph), Love Don't Lie, Gravity, Cry, Girl Like You, and Scar.
In conclusion, if you are a REAL Def Leppard fan (and not some fair-weather fan who corners them into a certain sound and blasts them if they don't produce what you want), you MUST get this CD and give it a fair number of listens (10 or so) before you walk away in errant disgust as so many here have apparently done. This is definitely a cornerstone to your DL collection and I personally can't wait to see what they produce in the future. The boys are BACK IN YOUR FACE.

Only Human Review

Sonic Syndicate has always marveled me with their unique take on the metal subgenre "Melodic Death Metal". Despite claims from fans and critics alike, Sonic Syndicate still maintains to create Melodic Death Metal, just a style unlike other bands commonly displayed today. Sonic Syndicate can be described basically as a blend between In Flames, System Divide, Sylosis and Soilwork.
Like fellow Melodic Death Metal bands Sylosis, System Divide, and Soilwork, Sonic Syndicate does a unique spin on the genre, mixing heavy growls/screams, with more traditional sounding clean vocals. Sonic Syndicate is capable of pulling this off beautifully thanks to the groups two singers: Richard and Roland. The two vocalists find harmony in their voices throughout the songs, despite the differences in their singing styles.
The album starts off with the melodic, and catchy track "Aftermath". The song finds a nice balance between the two styles, allowing Richard to growl the majority of the verses and leaving Roland to perform the majority of the chorus alone (with Richard occasionally providing accompaniment in the background). It's a formula that Sonic Syndicate usually follows: harsh verses with clean choruses. The formula works precisely, just like the Pythagorean theorem, consistent, and exact.
Several songs venture away from this formula, and allow Roland to take more charge. "Enclave" is a track that consists of solely clean vocals, and the result is amazing. Roland is a very talented and capable singer, and "Enclave" does a great job of showcasing this. Transitioning from quiet, calm singing during the verses to a much more powerful refrain, makes "Enclave" one of the best tracks on the album, due to its intensity despite its difference and variation from the remainder of the album.
Stand out tracks include: "Denied", "Unknown Entity", "Aftermath", and "Psychic Suicide". The pace of these tracks is high tempo, and the blend between vocal styles is at its best in these songs. Sonic Syndicate never struggles to find an equilibrium between singing and growling, and the entire album "Only Inhuman" provides some of the band's best work to date. If you're a fan of Scar Symmetry, In Flames, Sylosis, Mors Principium Est, Soilwork, or Deadlock, you're bound to enjoy listening to this album.

I am a lifelong Judas Priest/Rob Halford fan, therefore, I am admittedly biased towards a positive review. When Resurection came out I liked it and recomended it FOR FANS FOF 80'S STYLE HEAVY METAL. The album was what it was, good for its genre with a few cheesy moments, but fun.
This CD on the other hand straight ROCKS! Yes it has a few songs that remind you of Shake your fist 80's style Metal with an updated production (Golgotha, but for the most part its quite innovative and modern.
The opening Title track crucible is awesome Heavy and deep without being cheesy. The first half of the CD follows this standard pattern, but what really turns me on is the 2nd half, which is more experimental..Heavy, melodic, and yet very modern. I would compare the sound more with Tool, but Rob Halford Style vocals. The song Sun is truly great
The musicianship is superb and the production is very deep and moody. The lyrics, a few tongue and cheek momonets asside, are also surpringly introspective.
Impossible as it sounds I think this might be the best release of the singers three decade career. At least its the one I am enjoying the most right now. I think this CD, if it recieved airplay, could be a fair size hit. Unfortunely, promotion has not been great and there is no tour to package the group on this year. I am not sure why they couldn't have been a Ozzfest Side-Stage act, but it didn't happen. Only room for one 50+ singer on that tour. If you liked REsurection I think you will very much like Crucilbe. If you know nothing of this band check it out and keep an open mind..I think you will be surprised.

Angel of Retribution (With Bonus DVD) Review

Angel of Retribution (With Bonus DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION opens with a crescendoing, swirling guitar riff which explodes into the welcome return of the classic Halford scream. "Judas is Rising," the first track exclaims. Indeed. They has risen and continue to stand tall and rock throughout all ten tracks on this, their overdue and welcome reunion album.
Priest do not reinvent their sound on this LP. Instead, much like Maiden's BRAVE NEW WORLD, they simply give us a molten slab of the rock we banged our heads against back in the days of BRITISH STEEL, SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE and PAINKILLER. Each track begs for the volume to be turned just a little more to the right and the momentum builds through the album's epic closer duo of "Eulogy" and "Lochness," the latter of which may be derided as a bit over the top in terms of Dio-esque hokiness, but when did these guys ever take themselves too seriously? Of the entire album, only the non-screaming vocals of "Worth Fighting For" leave the listener wanting. Regardless, ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION picks up exactly where PAINKILLER left off and this listener in particular hopes it's the first of another run of at least another dozen or so records by Halford & Co.
Break out the black - both t-shirts and lightbulbs. If you thought Priest of the past was only a memory, you've got another thing comin'.

Deluxe double 180gm orange vinyl LP pressing in gatefold sleeve.Angel Of Retribution marked the return of Rob Halford, after a 12 year departure from the band. The album debuted at #13 on the U.S. Billboard chart, what makes it the second highest chart of a Judas Priest album (only before Nostradamus). It also marked the first time Judas Priest have been the #1 artist on a national chart (in Greece). The album was produced by Roy Z, who co-wrote the song "Deal With The Devil".--This text refers to the Vinyl edition.

A Matter Of Life And Death Review

A Matter Of Life And Death

Iron Maiden still reign supreme as the absolute Kings of Metal and have since their first disk back in 1980. Now, countless releases later, A Matter of Life and Death shows that the "Colours" are not running in the slightest on the Iron Maiden Flag.
I remember back in 1999 hearing that Bruce and Adrian re-joined the band for Brave New World. That was indeed exciting news. After all, while they were out of the band they teamed up on two of Bruce's solo releases, and one of those releases, Accident of Birth, was as good as Maiden's Number of the Beast or Piece of Mind...I know...Blasphemous!
And what a disk Brave New World was! That too was as good as any of the best Maiden albums ever released. 6 years and another release (Dance of Death) later, the Irons are still way up.
A Matter of Life and Death is an Iron Maiden classic already. It's got the familiar sounds...you know...the ones we all have come to know and love over the past 26 years. The anthem choruses are there. The epic songs are there. The lead guitar duals are there.
The three-guitar onslaught is there. But that's a relatively new sound that's only been around since Brave New World. And that sound is working on all Iron cylinders on A Matter of Life and Death.
The first three tracks ring true to the sound established with Brave New World and Dance of Death. Track 3, Brighter Than a Thousand Suns, is an intricately woven together off time rocker that will be amazing to see pulled off live. Track 4 has that classic pre-Blaze years sound.
The disk gets better as you get deeper in. Tracks 8 and 10 are both 9+ minute epics, and perhaps the two best tracks on the album. All the tracks have their own sound. And not one of them should be "judged by its cover"; often times the way a track starts is not indicative of what you get two minutes into it. But that's well known signature style for Maiden.
Iron Maiden will not disappoint the die-hard fans with A Matter of Life and Death and they keep the sound refreshed enough to bring in new fans with every release. These guys are the epitome of Metal and the epitome of Metal done RIGHT.
Don't pass on this one, folks.

TOO SAFE,YOU'VE GOT TO BE JOKING!
THIS INCREDIBLE RECORD HAS EVEN MORE DEPTH THAN THEOGONIA AND I WOULD ALSO SAY IT IS HEAVIER AS WELL,OVERALL.
ALSO INCORPORATING MORE TRADITIONAL GREEK ELEMENTS.
MY ONLY SLIGHT COMPLAINT IS THAT I WISH SAKIS CONTRIBUTED SOME VOCALS TO THE DIAMANDA GALAS COVER ON THE LAST TRACK,BUT EVEN STILL,WHAT A MAGNIFICENT HAUNTING CONCLUSION TO THIS INCREDIBLE WORK.
AMAZING STUFF AND EQUALLY AMAZING ARTWORK AS WELL.

Rotting Christ presents their eleventh offering, "AEALO", Recorded on Mt Olympus, the seat of Zeus and the Ancient Gods! The Greeks are Drawing Heavily from thier country's ancient heritage and then go on to translate this rich history into the universal Language of metal. Their distint sound and riffing becomes transformed by traditional female lamenting choirs and ancient reed pipes as well as folkloristic melodies and rythems into something fresh and fascinating.Primordial frontman Alan A. Nemtheanga delivers a stunning guest performance, while no less amazing contribution comes from Greek-American Diva extreme Diamanda Galas in a cover version of her "Orders From the dead" song. AEALO is certainly the most worthy of worship

Ozzy's latest album Black Rain, Is his best in several years. First off, his voice is stronger and clearer on this one since No More Tears. Compare this with his Under Cover album and the difference is obvious.
The tracks:
1. Not Going Away - I think this song is the weakest thing on the album and one of Ozzy's worst opening songs of all. Odd also since the first two songs are essentially about the same thing.
2. I Don't Wanna Stop - Great single and classic sounding Ozzy tune. Way better than Not Going Away.
3. Black Rain - Highlight of the album. War Pigs for the new era. Political lyrics and how long has it been since you've heard a harmonica on an Ozzy tune?
4. Lay Your World On Me - Good ballad, good lyrics. Really needs an epic No More Tears Zakk solo in it though.
5. The Almighty Dollar - Another highlight. Very bass heavy and almost funk sounding during the verses for an Ozzy tune. Blasko does well on this one. His bass is very prominent on the whole album.
6. 11 Silver - Fast song about crystal meth. Pretty cool.
7. Civilize The Universe - Good song, nothing really stands out but good anyway.
8. Here For You - The obligatory "I Love My Wife" ballad.
9. Countdown's Begun - Another one of the best on the album. Possibly Zakk's best solo on the album.
10. Trap Door - Cool Zakk riff but it's kind of repetative on the lyrics.
Bonu Tracks :
11. I Can't Save You - I Don't know why this was left off the US release it's fast and yould have made a killer opening song to the album.
12. Nightmare - Another song that shouldn't have been a b-side. Sounds more like Ozzy from the 80's which kind of mixes the album up a little.
Overall an excellent album with little to complain about and well worth getting the Japanese version for the bonus songs. The album is also in a jewel case with the booklet and the very cool cover art that's way better than the US packaging.

Live In Concert 25th June 1980 Review

Live In Concert 25th June 1980

This concert by the mighty Judas Priest was performed and recorded at the The Rainbow Music Hall, Denver, CO, 6/25/80. Judas Priest had just released the 'British Steel' album in April of 1980 and were once again touring the great expanse of North America. This concert is the bands first ever performance in Colorado and they make sure it is a special night for the sold-out audience.
This cd captures Judas Priest on a night when they were "on" as they say in the 'biz. The audio quality of this cd is really excellent; yes, there is some minor audio fluctuations in the very beginning but this occurs during the echo portions of Rob's vocals when he is singing "The Ripper" and "Running Wild". The audio dips slightly during "Living After Midnight" but is brought to equilibrium halfway through.
The show opens with the famous "thunder" intro to "Metal Gods"; interestingly, this sound recorded for the album was actually a large door in Ringo Starr's house being slammed, with reverb and compression added! The band then rips NOT into "Metal Gods" but "Hell Bent For Leather"! This puts the Denver crowd on notice that this is going to be a wild night! The band then proceeds into "The Ripper" and "Running Wild".
Rob then introduces their new single at the time "Living After Midnight" and Glenn exhorts the rabid audience to "come on!" As I said before, the audio fluctuates between Glenn's vocals/guitar and Rob's vocals, this does get fixed though and the rest of the song is fine.
The audio and band really get into synch with the final 3/4's of the concert. The renditions of "The Sinner" and "Beyond The Realms Of Death" are great but the real winners here are the new songs off of 'British Steel'; "You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise"; "Grinder" and especially "Steeler" really rock. Getting to hear the band perform "Steeler" live is a real treat because they rarely play this song live! Amazingly, JP manages to up the energy even more with a fantastic back-to-back performance of "Genocide" and "Tyrant"! The 'explosions' heard at the end of "Tyrant" occured when Rob came on stage with a faux machine gun and pretended to spray the audience with bullets! This was deemed to "extreme" by the press and authorities so Rob had to get rid of the "machine gun" - FOR SHAME! JP closes the night out with the Peter Green penned "Green Manalishi". Rob profusely thanks the cheering Denver crowd and promises to return again.
Wow - what a GREAT show! Yes, the begining of the cd has some minor audio flucuation but this really is minor and in NO WAY ruins the listening experience. Who cares anyway? Being able to listen to a live show from JP in 1980 is VERY rare! Criminally, there just is not alot from this period that was recorded so the minor audio problems really do not matter. This is Judas Priest, Live, 1980, British Steel tour, machine guns, leather, spikes and "hogs" -
Marching in the streets
Dragging iron feet
Laser beaming hearts
Ripping men apart
"You know that clanking in the very last section that's supposed to be metallic robot gods marching along? Well, we recorded that at Tittenhurst Park, and the sound is actually someone banging a tray of cutlery on the kitchen table!"- Glenn Tipton, Metal Works liner note, 1983

Born Again Review

This is one of the most enjoyable albums from Black Sabbath, Ozzy even says so! Just like another legendary U.K. band Deep Purple, they made a great album without Gillan and Blackmore called "Come Taste The Band," well Sabbath did the same, without Dio or Ozzy. But of all people, Deep Purple's Ian Gillan!!! The voice of Jesus Christ Superstar. A strange pairing, but it really does work. Born Again is much closer in spirit to the early 70's albums with Ozzy, and Gillan comes off sounding like a mad man, and a drugged up party animal leading Sabbath's original trio down a path of true hard rock high jinx. I find that I reach for this Sabbath album more than any other, not because I'm a Gillan fan, but because of it's inspired vibe, which gives the very best Sabbath albums a run for the money.
The only thing holding back the album from 5 stars is the muddy sound quality. Gillan blames bassist Geezer Butler for this. Story has it, Gillan heard the rough mixes (and still has them) and they sounded great, then Gezzer mixed the album with way too much bass. The remastering is actually pretty good, cleaning up some of the problem. Hopefully one day it will be re-mixed, or Mr. Gillan will release the earlier mixes.
Highlights: Trashed, Disturbing The Priest, Digital Bitch, Born Again & Keep It Warm

Carnival of Sins: Live 1 and 2

All Motley Crue fans, beware...this live album is censored. A couple years ago, shortly after the Carnival of Sins tour ended, Motley Crue released this same exact album exclusively through Wal-Mart. I bought it knowing the Wal-Mart version would be censored because it was Motley Crue, it was a great show and the setlist was top-notch. Then I saw the Crue was releasing the concert again, only this time it was going to be through major retail stores like Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. I figured, great! I'll get the uncensored version as well, right? Wrong. Sure the packaging didn't have a parental advisory sticker on it...but I figured if anyone is buying a live Crue album you should expect to hear all the F***'s and S***'s. I put in my stereo and low and behold it was the same album I bought a couple years prior from Wal-Mart.
If you're a Motley Crue fan, you want to hear how they REALLY are live without the censor police ruining an album. If the record industry wants to make 2 seperate versions of a CD, an explicit and a clean, fine. But album buyers should have the choice.
I rated this album 3 stars. It is a great concert, a great setlist and the band sounds very tight. You get a perfect balance of all 4 men and their instruments (the drums sound amazing!) This would have easily been a 5 star album, had it not been censored. If you're a Crue fan and you know what they're like live (and you didn't already buy the Wal-Mart copy) I'd pick it up. If you're a new fan that wants to hear how Motley Crue sounds live, I'd probably still pick it up since they sound great...just beware that this record does not represent a real Motley concert.

This DVD chronicles most of the sounds of the underground event at Starland ballroom from July 2, of 2005, and I was there. The day was hot as the sun rose high and the show opened with the Red Chord, who were noticeably absent from the disc as well as Opeth's Powerful 6 pm performance, which was very dissapointing. You get a song from each band except the fore mentioned and basically runs you through the day, All that Remains, A Life Once lost, Madball, High On Fire, Devil Driver, Strapping Young Lad, Norma Jean, Throwdown, Everytime I Die, Gwar, Poison the Well, Chimaira, Clutch, From Autumn To Ashes and Lamb Of god, not exactly in that order. What the DVD shows you that you didn't see at the show was some really great backstage antics, which definetly meets Pantera home video criteria with a big smile on my face, sure the show might have been on stage, but it looks like it was a ball backstage. The main feature shows a little piece with the band, then a 1 song performance from each, which is kind of a bummer, because I know High Roller video taped their whole sets. Most songs consisted of whatever the "single" was at that time, so don't expect some odd one off song to be represented here. Even with the 1 song a band, and not inlcuding Opeth or the Red Chord, this is still a GREAT DVD. Possibly one of the best High Roller has made? This was released on DRT.

I've always thought this was a great Crue album, but the addition of the extra tracks on the re-mastered version make it essential for Motley Crue fans. The album is fun because it's sleazy, raw and not nearly as polished as the other later albums that they made with the help of record label producers. The extra tracks are great and fit in perfectly with the rest of the album since they all have that early Motely sound. "Toast of the Town" and "Stick to Your Guns" are from their original demo single and they are real rockers. Even if you already have "Too Fast For Love" on cd, it is worth getting this remastered version for the extra songs!

The King of Metal returns with the best Dio album in years! However, this is a CD that grows on you, no fast stuff here, the songs are more in the "Heaven and Hell", "Holy Diver", "Children Of The Sea", "Shame On The Night" style. I must admit I hated the interludes between the tracks (as this is a concept album), but now that Ive listened to it a few more times, I love this whole CD! Standout tracks include "Feverdreams", "Feed My Head", "Eriel", and "As Long As Its Not About Love". All diehard Diomaniacs should get this CD, as well as the more casual Dio fan. However dont expect "Stand Up And Shout", "We Rock", type songs. Ronnie, Craig, Jimmy and Simon have NEVER SOUNDED BETTER! Excellent keyboards by Ronnie and Craig. No fifth star due to the fact that the song tempo's are basically the same, and although Craig sounds great, to be honest-he's no Vivian Campbell as far as soloing goes, but these are the best rythms since "Holy Diver". I give it 41/2 stars. GET THIS CD!

Having been an Alice Cooper fan for well over ten years, I thought I knew what to expect from his latest outing, "Brutal Planet." Those expectations were thrown out the window upon first listening because there's no way to prepare for how near-perfect this disc is. "Brutal Planet" is Alice's best CD since the gory days of the original Alice Cooper Group, and the reason is simple: It's like nothing he's ever done. This is a charging, fist-pumping, head-banging version of the usual glam-style treatment we've come to expect from the master of all that is dark and unholy. Every track hits home in some aspect, whether political, social or personal. "Wicked Young Man," "Cold Machines" and "Sanctuary" prove that theory with a vengeance. Perhaps the best track, however, is "Take it Like a Woman," a throwback to "Only Women Bleed" that takes sentimentality on one of life's grimmest subjects to new heights.
Overall, anyone can prove that this planet is rotten, but no one can do a better job proving that the music on it doesn't need to be.

I've always been a fan of these two power house rock groups. I saw Black Sabbath twice, once with Ronny and the first time with Ozzy. Sabbath puts on a good show but Ronny (RJD) just can't fill the shoes of Ozzy...He does well on the Heaven and Hell songs though.
But the main reason I bought this DVD was for the Blue part. Blue Oyster Cult put on a great show and really gave it their all. I saw them in 79 and they rocked!...as they do on this dvd.
Makes you want to do a air guitar solo.
Note: I've notice this dvd has been said to be rare...Well, it's not as rare as some might think...I've seen it on ebay and many other sites for sale. Prices range between 9 and 20 bucks. In fact I bought mine here for like $18, so shop smart and enjoy the show.

The Ultimate Sin, while mostly dismissed by the Ozzy camp with the exception of Shot In the Dark, which became the sole setlist staple in subsequent years...is an unfairly dismissed album.
To fairly judge the album, one must separate the actual songs from the production, which does indeed drag the album down. Ron Nevison has no business on any Ozzy album (or KISS for that matter.) It is primarily the production that drags the album down, not the actual songs. Fault lies with Ron Nevison and Capitol for pushing him as their choice of a producer upon Ozzy.
Put the production aside and judge the songs on their own merit, with some imagination of how they would have sounded with a proper producer. One must also take into account the souring relations between Ozzy and guitarist Jake E Lee as a factor in affecting Ozzy's view of the album. I believe the other factor that keeps this album/period as one that Ozzy would sooner forget is the image associated with it...big poofy blond hair with sparkly costumes best worn by Liberace.
The album's opening and title track, The Ultimate Sin, is nothing to scoff at. It features excellent lyrics put to a heavy groove...in fact, the song is an easy example of how the production got in the way of an otherwise worthy track, which can immediately instill a sense of frustration into the listener. The song itself would not be out of place on Diary of a Madman or Blizzard of Ozz.
Secret Loser follows suit with the same attributes....both tracks would be candidates as live set staples had they been handled correctly.
Never Know Why is the first track to bring up another issue with the album besides the production....poor lyrics. Actually, with proper production and the dropping of the "We Rock" chorus...it would be improved upon.
Thank God For the Bomb falls right in line with The Ultimate Sin and Secret Loser. The only real problem with the track is again...the production. It is the first track to bring up the theme of nuclear war on the album. It's a fast paced rocker with thoughtful lyrics.
I consider Never to be quite generic and tend to skip it. It does have it's moments...but not enough to hold me.
Lightening Strikes was the 3rd single released from the album. It is a prime example of how a horrid chorus drags down an otherwise great song. The hard hitting main guitar riff had plenty of potential to go down as one of the better known Ozzy classics. Improved lyrical content would have taken this one much further.
If there is one track that makes the overlooking of this album tragic, I'm going to give that honor to Killer of Giants. As the title alone indicates....it features very well done lyrics and an excellent arrangement. The mellow yet quitely edgy opening guitar appregios set the tone...bringing to mind images of the Earth in all it's beauty. When Ozzy's voice first enters...it continues the mellow mood...but after singing the line "if the button is pushed there'll be nowhere to run" the mood/music effectively yet subtlely shifts to one of dread, bringing to mind images of scorched earth..building up to an aggressive chorus.
Fool Like You is another generic rocker that I tend to skip.
The final track Shot In The Dark is well known enough to not need any going into. It does bear noting Ozzy was particuarly proud of the live performance of the song as found on the EP "Just Say Ozzy" as he felt it got right what Nevison trashed. Indeed...the EP track does do just this and serves as a prime example of how the rest of The Ultimate Sin tracks should have been recorded.
Considering the outrage pertaining to the re-recording of the bass and drum tracks on Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman...perhaps it would have been more prudent to go and correct the problems inherent on The Ultimate Sin..one of Ozzy's best selling albums, rather than attempt to bury it in obscurity by avoiding re-issuing it. Out of the Ozzy back-catalog..it is the album that would most benefit from re-mixing and re-recording the instruments..fleshing out some truly excellent material that is too easily dismissed by those unable to see past the flat, inappropriate production.
Unfortunately, we only have the album as originally released. I strongly recommend those that have not been exposed to it take into account the factors I name at the start of this review that impact the album. The contempt for the album in many of the reviews here should be read with wariness, considering most provide little supporting commentary for their opinion, especially when considering the rest of the Ozzy catalog. No Rest For the Wicked, while sonically correcting what was wrong with the Ultimate Sin, features a much higher degree of cringe-inducing lyrics than the Ultimate Sin. The proper balance would not be struck until 1991's No More Tears.
Avoid letting the slew of negativity skew your own opinion and you'll be able to see the material for what it is...adding some truly great Ozzy material to your collection that would otherwise have gone overlooked.
