Rockin' Across Texas Review

(More customer reviews)This book/CD combo concentrates on Elvis' travels throughout Texas in the 50's-70's. It's chock-full of previously unseen photographs and anectotes from people who were there.
The 50's section presents a fascinating document of a young up-and-coming Elvis playing to packed high school gymns and small music halls. Well over a hundred pages of wonderful pictures and informative anectotes. Worth the (non-Amazon) price of the book.
Elvis' basic training at Fort Hood, Texas is the basis of the 60's section of the book. Again, some entertaining stories of life on the base and "social" trips to Fort Worth.
Alas, the 70's section of the book lacks anything resembling a narrative due to Col. Parker's Elvis "lockdowns" during his '70s tours. Instead, we're treated to two complete soundboard concert recordings.
The first, Amarillo 6/19/74, is a very average performance with muddy sound quality. The undisputed highlight of this show is "Why Me Lord." Elvis rarely failed to pour his heart and soul into his favorite gospel songs. The disc is rounded out by a previously unreleased interview from 1960.
The second soundboard recording, from Fort Worth 7/3/76, presents Elvis in surprisingly good form. He appears to be in a much better mood than on the '74 show. The sound is crisp and almost sounds like a professional recording. Elvis was far from washed up at this late stage of the game and really rips into "Hurt" (it needs to be heard to be believed).
The book portion is topped off with a series of concert photos from every Texas Elvis performance between February 1970 and March 1977. This is the most heartbreaking aspect of this package as we see Elvis morph from a thin, beaming "cowboy" to a bloated, sick-looking singer.
All in all, it's a great package. One note, however. This can be purchased [...].

(More customer reviews)I saw the show about a month ago, and while there was a little lack-of-plot, it was so entertaining. It almost doesn't matter that the love story gets a little tangled, because you get so hooked on the songs. For example, the most obvious stretch to include a song was "jailhouse rock"... it just starts all of a sudden... I mean, it's a great song, but you can tell that it was included just because it's such a good song, not because it has some kind of relevance. But I still loved show. If you are looking for a profound and enlightening love story... this may not be it--but I truly believe that anyone would enjoy the entertainment (the music grabs you, because it's... well... elvis). The energy and enthusiasm of the performance was outstanding and it was captured really well on this cd. It puts me in a great mood! Between Cheyenne Jackson and Jen Gambatese (and, actually, the entire cast is really strong vocally) I challenge anyone to listen to this cd without singing along, tapping your feet, or bopping your head. Songs like "C'mon Everybody" and "Burning Love" are bound to get you out of your seat. Then there are the seductive songs like, "Let Yourself Go," and "A Little Less Conversation;" the lovestruck ones: "It's now or never," "The Power of My Love," "It Hurts Me," "There's Always Me," and the ever so wonderful "Can't Help Falling In Love." I definately recommend it, especially for those elvis or/and broadway fans. I honestly feel that everyone would appreciate this cd... whether it be for elvis, broadway, or sheer enjoyment!

(More customer reviews)This is a fantastic concert that show cases many of Neil Diamond's greatest hits. I still remember watching this concert live on TV as a teenager over 30 years ago. This concert is more in the 'Hot August Night' style - which is vastly superior to Neil Diamond's more recent DVD concerts and live CDs - there is no screaming, no mundane dialogue from an aging artist - just excellent music. This concert is highly recommended to anyone who is a fan of Neil Diamond's 60's and 70's style of delivery.

(More customer reviews)I absolutely love this album. After checking a copy of it out from the library, I went out and bought my own. Each of the songs capture the essence of the power and soul Elvis put into his music. I can't even imagine the sheer exuberance of being at one of his concerts! I only wish that I would have been living during his time to experience Elvis Presley live in concert. This CD is the next best thing.
But the tracklisting here says that there are 24 tracks, when there are really 29 and they aren't the right songs. (More customer reviews)My granddaughter, Julie, to whom I'd sent this CD as a birthday present, wrote me a message titled, "ELVIS CD THANK YOU!!!!þ" saying "Thank you for giving me a very good CD. I heared his speech and I thought it was great!! In Japan, I am going to school and in March, the school will close. The reason my school is going to close is , A new big school will open and three schools will close to make the big school. The first school is Shinmeishougatskou where Lisa [her sister, who prefers Aerosmith and thought Stephen Tyler's name *is Aerosmith] and I go right now. The second is makinoshougatskou where Lisa used to go. The third is Rokutanshougatskou where neither of us went.
"Thank you for the CD."
Julie's father is my son, Dan, who was born in Oregon but who has lived in Japan for decades. His daughters are bilingual, of course.

This DVD captures the essence of the "Elvis the Concert" shows and does so with great sound and in great picture. Honestly, watching it is very close to being there in person. Elvis never sounded better. I wish they would release a companion CD. It's great seeing Elvis players together again and as brilliant as ever. This is a great release. Thank you EPE for putting it together and finally releasing it to the public. What strikes you is just how timeless Elvis and his music really is. No other singer could do a show like this and seem as fresh and modern as Elvis does. This DVD won't disappoint. Elvis lives!

(More customer reviews)This double CD, Follow That Dream Records' June, 2009 release, chronicles Elvis' May 30-June 1, 1975 stand in Huntsville, AL where the King gave five sold-out performances. The bulk of these discs are comprised of the 5/31 matinee and the 6/1 evening show plus six bonus tracks from two other shows that were not performed at the two main concerts. The soundboard recordings begin with the third song of the evening, "Love Me", as Elvis' engineers rarely recorded the nightly openers, "See See Rider" and "I Got A Woman"/"Amen" (although the latter is included as a bonus track on the second disc).
Elvis' energy level is high and his voice is strong throughout, with the 5/31 matinee being an exceptional aural treat. "The Wonder Of You", "Burning Love", a brief rendition of "Trouble", "Hawaiian Wedding Song", and an impromptu version of "For The Good Times" are among the highlights. Elvis juggles the set a bit the following night, with four changes, the most interesting being a blistering "Polk Salad Annie" which takes the place of an aborted "Burning Love" when he has trouble remembering the words. A sweet "I'll Remember You", and, from the bonus tracks, powerful versions of "I'm Leavin'" and "How Great Thou Art" and a spur-of-the-moment "Release Me", coupled with the interplay between Elvis and the crowd demonstrate that both the artist and his audience were having fun. The gatefold packaging, with many previously unseen high-quality photos from the stand and a well-edited, crisp-sounding mix make this a true first class presentation. If you're an Elvis concert collector, this set is as good as it gets.

This Is Elvis (Two-Disc Special Edition) (1981) Review

(More customer reviews)This is Elvis is a Documentary that traces the life of Elvis from his early days in Tupelo and Memphis, his audition for Sam Phillips at Sun records, his first rush of fame, his early TV apperances, the contraversy over his performing style, his army years and his first meeting with Pricilla, his movie years, his 1968 comeback, his touring years in the 1970, up to his death in 1977. This is elvis combines actual footage of Elvis with reenactments with actors representating him at 11, 23, and 42 years old. It is narrated by Ral Donner, an Elvis impersonator who sounds excatly like him. Also other people in Elvis life, including former girlfreind Linda Tompson and road manager Joe Espisito, also provide narration.
As noted in previous reviews, you do get to see upstairs at Graceland, as well as how it looked when Elvis died. Scenes from his early TV apperances, including the Milton Berle performance that caused a scandal as well as the "above the waist" performance on Ed Sullivan. Concert scenes from his 1968 show, Thats the way it is, Aloha from Hawaii, and from his last filmed show in 1977, are here as well. The 1977 show has never been on DVD, manily because Elvis was in bad health and it was just seven weeks before his death. Still he sings a good verison of My Way.
This DVD set will include the original Theactral version from 1981, and the version that has been on VHS that had more footage. As noted in a review, Elvis does make some off color remark to his friends about a woman he had been with the night before, in the home verison, Ral Donner overdubed something less off color. Also the theatracial verson, in the 1977 concert, had the version of Are You Lonesome Tonight, where Elvis fouls up the spoken part of the song saying plus tax etc. In the home version, it is replaced with Love Me.
Thanks to The Elvis Presley Estate for finally releasing this on DVD. It is a must for all Elvis fans, young and old.

Blue Hawaii (1961) Review

(More customer reviews)What is a self-proclaimed intellectual doing watching (and loving) Elvis films? I make no claims about Norman Taurog as a director, nor about the credibility of the script, nor about the authenticity of the Hawaiian music. I DO claim, however, that Elvis is the The King. The songs, the music, and the singing are fantastic. Everything else is strung onto Elvis like strings of popcorn around a Christmas tree.
Not all Elvis films are this good. What makes this one better are the glossy production values; and the letterbox print definitely helps. Angela Lansbury puts in a highly amusing performance as Elvis's ditzy Southern Belle mama (after all, Hawaii is the southernmost state, no?). The whole story hinges around Elvis's return from the military and his desire to return to his cozy beach bum existence, while mater and pater want him to join the family pineapple firm.
The King, of course, is subject to no law. He goes into the tour guide business, marshalling a well-preserved teacher and her four teenage charges around the islands. His Franco-Hawaiian girlfriend is jealous that there's more than tourism going on behind closed doors.
At the end, everything comes together. Elvis gets hitched AND finds a way to work in tourism and for the pineapple firm at the same time. All is at peace in the world, and the music wells up. Finis.

Elvis - That's the Way It Is (Special Edition) (1970) Review

(More customer reviews)The "Special Edition" DVD of the 1970 concert film, "That's the way it is",is remastered with better audio, video, and extra footage of Elvis! It has removed footage from the original VHS version (which has a cover showing Elvis in a flowered shirt) such as fan comments, advertising for the show, and even a few Elvis performances ("I just can't help believing" for one). This documentary consists of footage of Elvis in one of the best times of his life emotionally, physically, and vocally. Seriously, the band has to work hard to keep up with the energy that Elvis displays in this show! (see "Polk Salad Annie", "Suspicious Minds", etc.) It is fantastic that this video has been preserved because it shows Elvis at the top of his game. You may notice that the audience is quite tame compared to an arena audience. For one thing the concert is a formal Vegas affair with everyone seated at dining tables. Yes there are still some lovesick girls in the front row, but you can also see celebrities like Sammy Davis, jr. and Cary Grant in attendance. The energy of the audience doesent really matter anyway because the performance Elvis gives is amazing and inspiring. This is a great way to remember Elvis.
The DVD will sound, look, and flow much better than the original film. It also has more Elvis and less stuff to fast foward through. Bottom line: Hold on to your old VHS copy for the performances not on the DVD, but buy the DVD for every other reason.

(More customer reviews)This DVD has just the basics of Elvis' excellent 1968 special. If you want an in-depth presentation, you should get the 2 DVD Deluxe edition. This DVD includes nearly all of the footage of the original show. Elvis' performances are outstanding, especially the "informal" jam session, where Elvis actually plays his guitar instead of just using it as a prop! Elvis' informal jam session was an early precursor of the MTV Unplugged series that would follow more than 20 years later. The bonus material includes some outtakes and photos, but really does not add much to the set. This DVD should be enough for the average fan and it is available at a reasonable price. Hardcore fans will want the deluxe edition.

(More customer reviews)The 1999/2000 World tour cd is a import from Germany and does not life up to its expectations. The main reason is, that this is not the original "tour recording". It is rather a compilation of Elvis recordings from the '70s without the "new" live sound. The album however is not from the "new" world tour. I saw "Elvis the concert" in Cerritos, California in January the 30th 2001 and it was fantastic. Needless to say I was excited, about purchasing a live cut album, from this concert event. The packaging by RCA/BMG makes people believe, that this is the album from those shows, but it is not. All that was done, is a addition of the "old" tracks ( Aloha,TTWIS,etc.) Well, those original tracks are great and I am a huge Elvis Fan, but I wish EPE would correct those "false" shipments from Germany.

(More customer reviews)An earlier review points out, very accurately, "On Tour" is a lot of Elvis getting in and out of cars... etc. How true. It is disappointing NOT to have more performance footage.
However! (I may be very bias on this point.) The video snips we do get are very cool... at least to me... as the movie was filmed the year I saw him for the first time. Every time I see the movie, I'm trying to figure out if certain scenes were filmed the evening I saw him.
Also, the lack of video, and the multiple scenes of fans going wild, and more, should be blamed directly on Colonel Parker. If you've ever seen "That's The Way It Is" (Original Release), it's cut up almost as bad as "On Tour". Again, this was Parker's doing! Several years ago, "That's The Way It Is: Special Edition" was released. Virtually ALL the Colonel Parker touches were removed and the songs were completed instead of cut. In fact, I believe several songs could be added because of the removal of scenes of screaming fans and backstage BS. I highly recommend "That's The Way It Is: Special Edition" for anyone wanting a high quality Elvis performance video.
I have to give "On Tour" four stars because of the memories I have of that year's tour, and even though it lacks in many ways I'm still glad it was released. Maybe someone will attempt to restore it the way they did "That's The Way It Is: Special Edition".
