(More customer reviews)Despite the previous reviewer's disappointment in this collection, I think it is quite good. It isn't meant to be a hits collection. It includes a nice mix of Brad's hits and some lesser known album tracks. It's worth buying if only for his spectacular duet with Sara Evans, "New Again." My only complaint is that Amazon, for some reason, hasn't made it available digitally. However, it is available digitally from Walmart MP3.

Mud on the Tires Review

(More customer reviews)My interest in country music died around the time Garth retired for the third time. Frankly I just got sick of the techno/pop/country/rock that was flowing from Music Row so shut off my radio and spent a couple of years listening to other stuff. However, a few months ago I tuned in to Nashville Star just to see what was going on there; besides I missed good country music. It pulled me back in. I turned on CMT and sure enough, Shania and Faith were still staring solefully at the camera, embracing themselves and some guy from Rascal Flatts was baring his backside but then I saw and heard Brad Paisley - a young, talented, hot young singer who, praise be, actually sang real country and did it with a sense of humor and a smile in his voice that matched the smile on his face. I bought "Mud on the Tires" and in the days following also purchased his other cd's. What a package of talent. This man can play a mean guitar, write terrific music and make me both laugh and cry with his clever and very relevant lyrics. He writes a love song that's about how love really is, not how Hollywood wants us to think it is. He can mock celebrities and at the same time he IS one! I really like that. "Mud on the Tires" has too many highlights to mention them all, besides others have done a good job of that already. My favorites are probably "Ain't Nothing Like" and "Whiskey Lullaby" but every tract is a winner and I expect "That's Love" to be the next single climbing up the charts. It also has potential to be an entertaining video - Brad Paisley excels at those. And oh, I don't agree with the reviewer that the hymn at the end of each cd is "obligatory" - they sound heartfelt to me and an integral part of what Brad Paisley is trying to do. I hope he keeps it up. Thanks for bringing a lapsed country music fan back into the fold, Brad. You keep singing songs for the real folks and the real folks will keep buying your music.

Time Well Wasted Review

(More customer reviews)Paisley has been turning out solid country tunes for albums now but he seems to have fleeting moments on radio sometimes. On this album, Paisley seems to be at his sharpest. He takes on fast tracks "Alcohol" & "You Need a Man Around Here" and lays on the humor and great song writing without killing traditonal country roots -- take a note Keith Urban.
There are the romance ballads such as "The World" & "Flowers" that I hope are hits on Radio and video format as well.
But there is a single song on here that is worth the purhcase alone. The heartbreaking ballad, "When I Get Where I'm Going" has to be one of the most beautiful songs of the last 20 years. If this song doesn't warm you up then there is no hope. It guests, Dolly Parton -- who has been turning out pure Bluegrass heaven on her last three discs. Their vocal harmonies and soaring melodies is a amazing. I can't recommend the disc enough.
Excellent.

American Saturday Night Review

(More customer reviews)Brad's new album is very solid, and it features a wide variety of great music. Brad co-wrote every song here, on what is probably his most personal CD ever. There is still a good amount of his classic light humor, but in general, the material here is a little bit more serious than some of his previous "Ticks" type songs -- although that isn't necessarily a bad thing at all. It starts out with a feel-good summer type song, "American Saturday Night", and ends with "Back To The Future" -- a short guitar laden instrumental song, which is similar to some of the music on his last album, 'Play'.
Scattered between are 13 other great songs, including Brad's #1 smash love song, "Then". "Welcome To The Future" is another gem, just waiting in line to become Brad's next #1 single. It's one of the best songs on the album, quite catchy, and has very strong lyrics that really make you think about how far we have come in such a short amount of time. The reprise (track #7) is also a very nice short little acoustic clip. "Water" is another fun catchy summer song, as is "Catch All the Fish", which has a real bluegrass feel to it - sort of in a way similar to one of his previous songs, "Mr. Policeman".
One of my personal favorites on the album is track #10, "No", which is an extremely powerful song. It's a nice traditional sounding tune, with steel guitars and simple laid back production. The song is very well written, and if you listen closely to the lyrics, it carries out a very important life lesson. Overall, I think this album has a little something for everyone, and I highly recommend it!!!!!

Cowboy Town (Aussie Tour Edition) Review

(More customer reviews)Now, this is a little more like it. I admit, 2005's HILLBILLY DELUXE was a big hit for the guys, but I felt it was really just average work. As the Amazon reviewer pointed out above, Brooks & Dunn's albums do tend to have about an even mix of great songs and suprisingly mediocre ones. And while COWBOY TOWN isn't perfect, it certainly hits more than it misses.
The lead single, "Proud of the House We Built" is cut from the same cloth as 2003's excellent "Red Dirt Road." The guys' affection for the Rolling Stones (heard also in two songs on the RED DIRT ROAD disc) comes through not only in direct references ("Johnny Cash Junkie") but in the playful, honkytonk rhythm of cuts like the spirited "Put a Girl In It."
In fact, much of COWBOY TOWN pays tribute to seventies-era rock and country. Kix Brooks' "Drop in the Bucket" is such a textbook ZZ Top number, I was surprised to learn the song wasn't a cover of some lost tune from the fun-lovin' Texans. Brooks' ongoing Seger-esque observations of lost joys of youth inform every moment of "Ballad of Jerry Jeff Walker", which features a gargoyle-voiced cameo from its title character.
Inevitably, after nearly an album's worth of up-tempo numbers about cowboys, girls and booze, the duo succumbs to the now-obligatory Thoughtful Ballad or two. Good intentions aside, it's hard to defend such trite observations as "A preacher named King/Well, he had a dream" (from "American Dreamer") or most any line from the current events travelogue of the second single "God Must Be Busy." With ballads--and Brooks and Dunn should know this by now, after "Believe" spent like 30 weeks on the charts--less is more. The guys are at their best when they relax with a simple story song like "Cowgirls Don't Cry."
I think COWBOY TOWN works for both longtime fans and relative newcomers. For the former, the album is along the same lines as RED DIRT ROAD, with less filler. And to the latter, it might prove a welcome remedy from the same old redneck garbage being put out by Toby Keith, or any number of slick but empty new artists clogging up the radio.
