CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL CONCERT / LIVE IN EUROPE (2 CD + DVD set)

I am a huge fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival so I'm grateful for the opportunity to rate this transaction and this product.
First, with regards to the seller, onlyrare, I give him the highest possible rating. My parcel arrived well ahead of schedule and in great shape so he gets kudos from me.
Second, as concerns the product itself, I'll do my best to offer the most detailed description since there seemed to be no such information when I was deciding whether or not to put in my order. I remember when the vinyl records came out for these live recordings. One of them came out in 1980 I believe and was initially misnamed by Fantasy Records as "The Royal Albert Hall Concert". A short time after they realized their error and renamed the album "The Concert". As a matter of trivia, would you believe Fantasy almost repeated the error because the liner notes to the disk refer to CD1 as "The Royal Albert Hall Concert", which is incorrect of course. The CD itself does not carry the misnomer, just in case that's of any importance to anyone. The DVD portion of this product sure enough offers footage from the excellent concert at the Royal Albert Hall, more on that later. CD 1 is actually from a performance by CCR on January 30th 1970 in Oakland, California. Some scenes from that performance also show up on the DVD.
CD 2 is a recording of CCR when they toured Europe as a trio in 1971 (minus Tom Fogerty) just before the band's breakup. One source I consulted claims the "Live in Europe" recording was not just one gig but possibly a couple of concert stops throughout the tour. John Fogerty might be able to set the record straight on that, but as I recall, he was very much against releasing the "Live in Europe" record. I guess I'd have to agree with him there, the trio sounds a little edgy for my taste. That may also have been the tour where drummer Doug Clifford came down with a severe fever but recovered in time to keep the tour going. Whether or not that's the case is not really important but when Nat Freedland of Billboard opined that CCR sounded better a trio, I sure don't think he was referring to that album. In the end, it's always in the eye (or in the ear) of the beholder, so it's up to you to make up your mind how you feel about the concert. I love all of CD 1 and parts of CD 2. The January 1970 concert (the actual contents of CD 1) was also part of a documentary produced by National General that was never aired officially, the result of much confusion and legal technicalities. Those who have shopped on ebay may have seen bits and pieces of this product on poor-quality VHS. Purportedly, this footage was transferred from a Japanese DVD. This might explain why every time I've seen the homemade VHS, there were Japanese overdubs throughout. This DVD does not have the overdubs so you can rest assured about that. This DVD does not carry all the material the "Japanese" version had, but what you give up in quantity you get back in quality since the VHS stuff was usually very low-grade. I mentioned before that there actually was material from the Royal Albert and thankfully, most of the concert scenes on this DVD are from that performance which I like very much. Just like the other content mentioned, this one is not absolutely new. I think it was originally prepared by a company called Paterson or Peterson Enterprises back in the 70s. The company which put all this material together tried very hard to trim off the parts that had to be removed and maybe patch some of the things that might have been damaged with time; so that in the Royal Albert Concert, if you look very carefully, there is a very short part (almost an eye blink) where John Fogerty suddenly switches from black leather to blue jeans. No big deal, at least they kept the wonderful audio to the start of the show where the opening notes to "Born on the Bayou" ring with their magical, elastic "boinnggg" effect. The video image was suppressed because I think that's where the other company had its name written before. As long as they kept the opening notes to the start of the song, along with the ambience of an electrified crowd, the rest is pure magic to me. The one thing I was hoping I would see from that concert was "Bad Moon Rising". I seem to remember viewing it somewhere and it was kind of cool because John Fogerty almost missed his cue to make it back to the microphone and start the vocals on the song. So it was more of an oddity than anything, but it isn't on this DVD.
On this disk, there are other audio-visual performances from the band as well. They include:
Down on the Corner (American Bandstand or Dick Clark Show?)
Bad Moon, Proud Mary (Johnny Cash Show)
Looking Out My Backdoor (National General or Mexican film crew present at the time?)
I Put a Spell on You (at the end of the song, somebody from the mixing room is unfortunately heard saying "That's nice")
Sweet Hitch Hiker
I Heard it through the Grapevine
and an interview with Ralph Gleason (circa 1971, National General)
I think we have to put things in their proper perspective here. Photography has been around roughly 160 years. Cinema/video, that's to say, "talkies" with colour, even less time. CCR did not stay together all that long and quality footage of their concert appearances are relatively scant. That's unlike other groups which received more publicity and attention, many times for antics unrelated to good music. Unlike two previous DVDs I purchased (and returned) on Creedence, I will say this one is certainly a keeper. If you have no "video evidence" of the greatness of this band, I encourage you to make this one a part of your collection, especially if you're a dedicated fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival/John Fogerty.

Hotel California (DVD-Audio Surround Sound) Review

If you were around in the late 70's and were within earshot of rock and pop radio, you heard the Eagles' 'Hotel California' and if you've listened to classic rock radio since then and till today, you are familiar with this album many times over, possibly even sick of it (as you might be with Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours', Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and most of Led Zeppelin), as you might be sick of Eagles music in general. However, just this Christmas day, I was with family, and the household happened to have a superb DVD/Dolby surround setup and the man of the house received the DVD-A of 'Hotel California' as a gift. He put it on, and I was there to experience this already time-honored album in glorious multi-channel surround sound. If you thought you've heard enough of the Eagles' best album, you ought to give this a chance -- the classic title track alone makes it worth the purchase. You will hear cymbal swells, guitar parts separated and panned, vocals and all that is the musical brilliance of this album as you never have before. "Wasted Time" sounds so good it will make you weep (this was always one of my favorite Eagles album tracks, as is "The Last Resort", also benefitting from the DVD-A treatment) ... highly recommended for Eagles, classic rock, and music fans in general needing to hear how good either the DVD-A or SACD format can be.

I have been an Emmylou fan since I first saw her playing small bars here in Washington, D.C. and she just keeps getting better. This is by far her most musically adventurous band coming on the heels of her Wrecking Ball recording. Since I missed the Spyboy tour this is the next best thing. Emmylou sings with more power and soul than ever and Buddy Miller is a truly unique musician. If you like the Spyboy recording this is a must.

Landing on Water Review

How can you not like this album? This is experimental Neil at his best, trying to tackle something new and infuse it with his own Neilness.
So, you think of the 80s, and you think of synthesizers. New Wave? Synth pop?
Neil puts together this album that is largely synthesizer-driven. Actually, that's not true. This album is primarily driven by Steve Jordan's drums, mic'd in such a way that it sounds like you're in a closet with them. Keyboards are layered on top of the drums, and last... BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST... Neil's trademark tortured distorted guitar periodically cuts through and slaps you senseless.
This album has a LOT of charm to it.
Lyrically:
"Take my advice, don't listen to me..."
"The wooden ships were just a hippie dream..."
An angelic-voiced boys choir singing "Got to fight to control the violent side..."
Samples & sound effects:
Breaking glass as percussion.
Screams punctuating that song "Pressure".
...and DAMN I don't know what they did to those drums throughout the album to make 'em sound so in-your-face, but... DAMN...
DAMN.

I really don't get all this business about this album being too 'whiney'. The only whining I hear is the people reviewing it. I think it's just a fine album. My CD doesn't have the bonus track, but I think it still sounds great. It runs the gamut from Rock to ballads and does it successfully. I love 'There goes the Neighborhood' and obviously 'My Favorite Mistake', but the sound of the CD is well-rounded all over. I like the whole concept of making the disc sound like it was recorded on an old reel-to-reel tape recorder. My opinion is that if you like Sheryl Crow, then you should buy this album and form your own ideas about whether you like it or not. I almost didn't buy this CD because of the things that I had heard about it. I would've been missing out. Don't let that happen to you.

This is one of the Charlie Daniels Bands best cd's. It was hard to find on disc but was glad that I could get it through .... From the opening fiddle to the last guitar cries this is an outstanding mix of country and southern fried rock. Charlie blends it all together and makes this a pure listening experience. License to Chill Review

License to Chill
Average Reviews:

As a long time phan of Jimmy Buffett, I was curious about his new country collaboration. LICENSE TO CHILL does not disappoint.
All the voices on HEY, GOOD LOOKIN' do their part to make it a rousing success, sure to get plenty of air time. BOATS TO BUILD is reflective and Alan Jackson's soulfulness rounds it out perfectly.
The title cut will probably be the next "single" release. Jimmy and Kenny have a good time and I like the tune, but I think it could have been better. Couldn't say how, it just leaves me a little flat.
COAST OF CAROLINA, Jimmy's valentine to his wife, Jane, is about as sweet a love song as you're ever going to find.
The in your face PIECE OF WORK is a great romp with county's rebellious Toby Keith. If you don't smile when you hear it, you've never met a real life "Bubba".
ANYTHING, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE is another great love song. "Tomorrow may come. It usually does. Don't know what it brings to the two of us. I just want you to know what I'm ready to do . . . anything, anytime, anywhere for you." Awwwwwwwwwwww.
Martina McBride joins the fun for a look at birthdays in TRIP ROUND THE SUN. This was the only pairing that was missing chemistry . . . or, at least to my ears.
SIMPLY COMPLICATED is Jimmy's wink at a "my wife left, my dog died, someone stole my truck, and I'm outta beer" drinking song. Hysterical.
COASTAL CONFESSIONS is one of the buried treasures in this collection. It might not get airplay, but it's a great story. "I'm a tidal pool explorer from the days of my misspent youth. I believe that down on the beach where the seagulls preach is where the Chinese buried the truth. . . I'm a reader of the night sky and a singer of inordinate tunes. That's how I float across time, living way past my prime. . . " Genius.
If you're from (1) the 50's or even the early 60's and (2) the south, SEA OF HEARTBREAK might evoke memories of your parents going out on the town. All dressed up . . . a cocktail or two consumed. And the Hi-Fi playing the latest dance tune. Cha-Cha-Cha. George Strait is so smooth . . . he and Jimmy are near perfection. This is my favorite cut.
CONKY TONKIN' is cute, upbeat and makes you want to get in the car and drive down Highway 1 to Key West.
PLAYING THE LOSER AGAIN with Bill Withers reminds me of Merle Haggard. In a good way.
I haven't figured out WINDOW ON THE WORLD yet.
Nanci Griffith's weathered voice blends with Jimmy's on SOMEONE I USED TO LOVE, with great results.
I'm not a fan of SCARLET BEGONIAS, but I understand Jimmy's mother loved the song, so maybe it's his tribute to her.
His cover of Leon Russell's BACK TO THE ISLAND isn't as good as it was in Hawaii this past January, but then NOTHING will ever top that night under the Maui moon.
There's been a lot of discussion/debate about Jimmy's crossover to country. Oh, well. He done good.
Enjoy!

And His All Starr Band Review

And His All Starr Band
Average Reviews:

The 3 CD set The Anthology...So Far by Ringo Starr and the All-Starrs is an excellent compendium of the six All-Starr Band Tours. The set consists of 47 live selections from the twelve year span of the All-Starr Tours which began in 1989 and continued through 2000.Currently, Ringo Starr is rehearsing for the seventh All-Starr Tour with a new line-up.The All-Starr concept of bringing musical legends together into a group to tour around the world is a unique and novel one. There is at present a spin-off of the All-Starr concept called A Tribute to Abbey Road which consists of an all-star musical ensemble performing Beatles songs headed by All-Starr alumnus Todd Rundgren. The All-Starr concept is a perfect showcase for Ringo Starr. The songs are chronologically sequenced beginning with the first All-Starr Tour in 1989. The song selections consist of Beatles numbers on which Ringo Starr sang lead vocal, his solo hits, and selections by the All-Starr performers. From his solo career, "It Don't Come Easy", "Photograph", "I'm the Greatest", "Don't Go Where the Road Don't Go","Back Off Boogaloo", and "You're Sixteen", are musical highlights. From the Beatles period, the songs included are "Yellow Submarine", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Boys", "Honey Don't","Act Naturally",and the anthem and signature song, "With a Little Help From My Friends" from the 1967 Sgt. Pepper album. John Lennon once referred to Ringo Starr as the "heart of the Beatles". The positive,self-deprecating, good natured mood of the songs shows why. The All-Starrs who accompany Ringo Starr in the ensemble consist of Billy Preston, Dr. John, Peter Frampton, John Entwistle of the Who, Jack Bruce of Cream, Gary Brooker of Procol Harum, Simon Kirke of Bad Company and Free, Rick Danko of The Band, Joe Walsh of the Eagles, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman of the Guess Who, and many more. The All-Starr song selections include "American Woman" by Burton Cummings, "Life in the Fast Lane" by Joe Walsh, "I Feel Free" and "Sunshine of Your Love" by Jack Bruce, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Gary Brooker, and "Show Me the Way" by Peter Frampton. The performances are excellent. The musical talent assembled is unprecedented. The sound quality of the set is excellent. A booklet is enclosed with the set which features an essay on the Tours. A weakness of the booklet is that it does not give the venues and dates for the songs. There are, however, excellent biographies of the performers and a good listing of the song selections. The booklet is decent although not comprehensive. The CD packaging is good. This 3 set Anthology CD by Ringo Starr and the All-Starrs is highly recommended. Some of the greatest musicians and greatest songs of the Rock Era are included. Every Beatles fan should own a copy. This anthology is essential for any rock/pop collection.I highly recommend it.

It is quite rare these days to find high quality compilations featuring female artists, but this is an absolute exception. 'Lilith Fair 2' contains a wonderful mix of old and new artists, all of whom sing with great passion and vibrancy. The music comes across as being meaningful and listenable, and successfully captures the diversity which has really brought women's music to the fore. Standout tracks include 'Angels' which is beautifully sung by Sarah and Emmylou, 'Island' by Heather Nova (she truly has an angelic voice), 'Sway' by Bic Runga (she epitomizes warmth and tenderness) and 'In the Ghetto' by the brilliant Natalie Merchant. Moreover, this compilation exudes all that is great about women's music and it truly will not disappoint. If only there were more compilations (other than the 'Lilith series) besides this!

On March 6, 2009, a sold out Knoxville (Tenn.) Coliseum crowd found out what millions of Jason Aldean fans already knew: he's a rising star and a damn fine entertainer. The concert was lights out and over-the-top. Those lucky enough to attend experienced not just an I-can't-wait-to-tell-myfriends- about-this show, but also benefited from the sum of years of hard work and determination. "Wide Open Live And More!" captures Jason Aldean at his rockin' country best. All the hits are here--"Amarillo Sky," "Why," "Hicktown," "Relentless," "She's Country," "Johnny Cash," "Laughed Until We Cried" and "Big Green Tractor"--and so are the live show favorites like "Wide Open," "I Break Everything I Touch" and "Asphalt Cowboy," among others. Not only does Jason sing his hits, he connects with his audience and offers them an escape, if only for the night. That's what real entertainers do.TRACK LISTING: 1. Wide Open 2. I bought this CD, just because. I didn't expect too much from it. Believe me; Amazon's 30-second sound bites don't deliver what this CD truly holds for its listeners. I have Costner's other CD (Roving Boy), and it was all right, pleasant enough, but not great. Untold truths is a huge departure from Roving Boy. Costner sounds good. Good arrangements. Good Lyrics. Nice instrumentation. A little bit country. A little bit rock and roll. I believe this CD will satisfy those who enjoy today's modern country sound, as well as those who love music in general. Very interesting CD that I will play a quite a lot. A big thumbs up!

Though best known for his acting career, Costner is no stranger to the art of making music and songwriting. The band's history goes back some 20 years when Kevin first met band mate John Coinman in Los Angeles during an acting workshop. The two began playing and writing music together and soon after started a band called "Roving Boy." As Kevin's star began to rise, he was unable to devote much time to the band. However, he and some of the band members continued behind-the-scenes playing, writing, and recording anytime they could throughout the years. A few years back the itch became stronger for Costner to start performing on a more regular basis. Costner recalls a performance back in August 2005 and remarks, "I remember looking out into the crowd, thinking `this just feels right'." And with that, his passion continued to grow with the end product of that passion being the debut album, Untold Truths. Radio programmer, Scott Lindy was one of the first people to hear the new album and had this to say, "I know what you're thinking about when you hear Kevin's gonna put out an album of country music.I thought it too.But then I heard it, and I got it.He's not chasing fame here (do you really think he needs to?), he's following a passion. I couldn't keep this music off of the air." The album is comprised of 12 original tracks all written or co-written by Kevin Costner & Modern West (Modern West is John Coinman, Blair Forward, Teddy Morgan, Larry Cobb and Park Chisolm). A 4-song sampler will be shipped to Country radio October 1 and will include tracks "Long Hot Night", "Hey Man What About You", "90 Miles An Hour" and "Superman 14." The track "Long Hot Night" will be available for download wherever digital music is sold starting 9/30. See below for album's complete track listing. The band will tour later this year and into early 2009 in support of the release.

If you like your bands to play live a faithful note for note reproduction of their albums then you'll love this album. If you're the type who likes a band to open up, change things around a bit and show some spontaneity in their live shows then this album is not for you.
Although, written over 3 years ago I have to take issue with previous reviewer kireviewer. A few things he/she said are simply untrue.
The reason Creedence didn't allow their appearance at Woodstock to appear on the album or movie had nothing to do with money. Creedence came on late at night after the Grateful Dead had put everyone to sleep. Their set was filled with numerous technical difficulties. Fogerty, already sensing the future importance of the event, didn't want Creedence's legacy to be such a poor performance.
It has never been documentated in any way that there were issues within the band about the style of music they played. If Fogerty wanted the band to be a showcase for his songs, so what? The guy wrote about 13 top ten singles in a 3 year period. The album Mardi Gras proved that the songs from the other members of Creedence were not up to snuff.
John WAS an autocrat. You had to do things his way or take the highway. To say that he couldn't get along with anybody is a bit unfair though.
Oh, by the way, as a reward for sticking with the band for ten years before Proud Mary hit John gave all the members a percentage of songwriting royalties for the first few albums even though they had absolutely nothing to do with writing any of the songs. Never heard Lennon or McCartney doing anything like that for Ringo.

Outstanding album; one of the best ever released by any artist. I'd say this is one of the top 3 in Dwight's catalog of releases. There really are no words to describe the sound and mood found on these tracks, but this is definately "it". There seems to be a wide-open, vast, lonely feeling throughout this album, and whether the setting of the song begins in the desert or on a bar stool, you cannot help but feel damn near every word of the songs. I have always felt (and probably always will) that Dwight has no peers; but the mixing and outstanding engineering of the sound found here, deserves special mention. Well worth your money.

This is a great collection of Keith's videos thus far! It features 3 videos from his 1999 self-titled album (Your Everything, Where the Blacktop Ends, But for the Grace of God) and 3 videos from his 2002 Golden Road album (Somebody Like You, Raining on Sunday, Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me). All videos are crystal clear and shown in their entirety, and the sound really gets your heart racing! Keith is an incredible performer!! I was a little disappointed that there was no insert or pamphlet -- there was only the DVD in the case. But since I was never promised anything except videos, I can't complain. I just store my ticket stubs from his concerts in the case so it's a complete package.

Sheryl Crow: C'mon America 2003

I'm sure the show was great, but my head's still reeling from the editing that must have been done by a teenage boy who suffers from severe ADHD and lives off of sugar and playstations. Well, at least that's what it felt like.
Pros: Sheryl is gorgeous, she's in top condition, the energy was high, and she looked like she was having a ball. The concert comes packed with a great setlist with numerous favorites.
Cons: Like many people have mentioned, both the filming and editing, for lack of a better word, sucks. The cameras zoom in, zoom out, blur out of focus on purpose just to re-focus (for effect, I guess). It's weird, because instead of focusing on Sheryl, the next shot inevitably zooms in on her guitarist's hand or her drummer's head. (I'm not kidding, they zoom in on hands, a LOT.) You also don't get more than 5 seconds in any one shot. Her bandmate's must be happy, because you see a lot the camera shares tons of love with her band--too much. I'm all for giving the rest of the band credit and screentime, but I don't pay for a concert DVD to see that much of the band.
I'm watching the DVD right now, and the shot's just moved from Sheryl's head, to a close up of the lead guitarist's hand, to a wide shot of the stage, to the discoball, to Sheryl's backside--all complete with zooms, blur effects, kaleidoscope effects, and swivels and swirls of camera moment--and all this took place in less than 30 seconds.
It's almost as if they desperately wanted a to give the DVD a "high energy" feel. Either that, or everybody in the editing room were hyper sorts who forgot to take their sedatives the day they put the DVD together. It didn't quite nauseate me, but it certainly got annoying in a quite a couple of spots when you just want to watch Sheryl for more than a few seconds at a time.
Silly me, I even read the reviews here and went ahead and bought the DVD, thinking the other reviewers exaggerated a bit about the schizophrenic editing. I don't know who okayed the job, but I would have told them to redo the whole thing within two minutes of watching it. They call it editing; I call it "slice, splice, and slap together."
Please, a little compassion for those who get motion sick or dizzy easily!

While I am neither a Deadhead nor a Dead Detractor, I do appreciate good music done by great musicians. With so much exterior baloney and cultural hoo-ha surrounding the Dead, a lot of people forget how hard they worked at becoming world class musicians. They succeeded. What comes across more than anything on this wonderfully mastered recording is the amount of energy that they had this night. When complimenting the Dead, everyone singles out Jerry's Guitar, Bob W.'s vocals and rhythms, or the two drummers working as one. Myself, I tip my hat to Phil Lesh. He anchors it all while retaining a great sense of melody on an instrument that many take for granted. Listen to the way he walks up and down during Row Jimmy. At some points he is going the opposite direction of Garcia and they still blend perfectly. Other times he takes the lead. He propels the song forward until it assumes its own direction. It is beautiful and expressive bass playing. Rhino is to be commended for the work they have put into preserving the live legacy of the Dead. The packaging is a crack-up.
