The set consists of 47 live selections from the twelve year span of the All-Starr Tours which began in 1989 and continued through 2000.Currently, Ringo Starr is rehearsing for the seventh All-Starr Tour with a new line-up.The All-Starr concept of bringing musical legends together into a group to tour around the world is a unique and novel one. There is at present a spin-off of the All-Starr concept called A Tribute to Abbey Road which consists of an all-star musical ensemble performing Beatles songs headed by All-Starr alumnus Todd Rundgren.The All-Starr concept is a perfect showcase for Ringo Starr. The songs are chronologically sequenced beginning with the first All-Starr Tour in 1989. The song selections consist of Beatles numbers on which Ringo Starr sang lead vocal, his solo hits, and selections by the All-Starr performers. From his solo career, "It Don't Come Easy", "Photograph", "I'm the Greatest", "Don't Go Where the Road Don't Go","Back Off Boogaloo", and "You're Sixteen", are musical highlights. From the Beatles period, the songs included are "Yellow Submarine", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Boys", "Honey Don't","Act Naturally",and the anthem and signature song, "With a Little Help From My Friends" from the 1967 Sgt. Pepper album. John Lennon once referred to Ringo Starr as the "heart of the Beatles". The positive,self-deprecating, good natured mood of the songs shows why. The All-Starrs who accompany Ringo Starr in the ensemble consist of Billy Preston, Dr. John, Peter Frampton, John Entwistle of the Who, Jack Bruce of Cream, Gary Brooker of Procol Harum, Simon Kirke of Bad Company and Free, Rick Danko of The Band, Joe Walsh of the Eagles, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman of the Guess Who, and many more. The All-Starr song selections include "American Woman" by Burton Cummings, "Life in the Fast Lane" by Joe Walsh, "I Feel Free" and "Sunshine of Your Love" by Jack Bruce, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Gary Brooker, and "Show Me the Way" by Peter Frampton. The performances are excellent. The musical talent assembled is unprecedented. The sound quality of the set is excellent. A booklet is enclosed with the set which features an essay on the Tours. A weakness of the booklet is that it does not give the venues and dates for the songs.There are,however, excellent biographies of the performers and a good listing of the song selections. The booklet is decent although not comprehensive.The CD packaging is good. This 3 set Anthology CD by Ringo Starr and the All-Starrs is highly recommended. Some of the greatest musicians and greatest songs of the Rock Era are included. Every Beatles fan should own a copy. This anthology is essential for any rock/pop collection.I highly recommend it.

Eagles Catalog Box Set Review

(More customer reviews)This is a 9-CD limited edition (only 20,000 copies) of The Eagles' entire Asylum recordings from 1972's self-titled debut through 1980's EAGLES LIVE (on 2CDs) plus a bonus CD containing their 1978 holiday single "Please Come Home for Christmas" and "Funky New Year." [Because this box set only covers the Asylum years, it does not include the 1994 Geffen album HELL FREEZES OVER or their 2003 single "Hole in the World."]
The CDs are housed in replicas of the original vinyl albums and include the original artwork. Serious Eagles fans will eagerly make the purchase, but casual fans will be content with 2003's 2-disc THE VERY BEST OF. After all, there is no bonus material here--even though none of these CDs are longer than 45 minutes (and the CD single is barely 7 minutes!).
There's no denying, however, the group's popularity. They have sold more than 83 million albums. [GREATEST HITS alone has sold more than 27 million!] Only the Beatles and Led Zeppelin have sold more records. Throughout the seventies, Don Henley and Glenn Frey were the Lennon and McCartney of the era, penning virtually all of their hits, including classics like "Best of My Love," "One of These Nights," "Lyin' Eyes," "Take It to the Limit" (with Randy Meisner) and "Hotel California" (with Don Felder).
This box set is a little pricey, but the music it contains is priceless. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Eagles reunited in the studio for 1994's Hell Freezes Over, and they continue to tour to great acclaim, but their reputation was made on the stellar repertoire they recorded from '72-'80, presented here in one collection for the first time. It all began in the early '70s when the band soared above their origins as harmony-heavy roots-rockers to emerge as the defining artists of the influential Southern California scene. They delivered four consecutive #1 albums that decade; three are contained herein (the fourth was their 1976 Greatest Hits). Ultimately they became one of the all-time biggest acts in contemporary music. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, they made the R.I.A.A.'s elite Artists of the Century list in 1999.

The Best of Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band So Far... (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)I should explain two things before I write this. First, I really hate oldies bands. I really feel that if a performer isn't doing something new he/she should be doing something else. Second, Ringo has always been my favorite Beatle. So whenever Ringo's All Starr Band would come through Chicago, which was every year, I'd shudder, and consider and talk myself out of going. Since I acquired this DVD (and the three CD audio release) that decision has become one of my lasting regrets.
These bands really rock. Not only do these guys rock, they reinterpret these classic rock warhorses and make them sound fresh. Brilliant, inspired playing and singing abound but there are enough wrong notes and miscues to indicate that these bands are not over-rehearsed and that the performances are not overdubbed or corrected. Ringo's voice is best described as refreshingly ordinary, inviting the listener to join in whenever he sings.
Some highlights: Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Dr. John pass around verses during "The Weight". Felix Cavaliere demonstrates that he's still in great voice in "Groovin'". Peter Frampton demonstrates that all that mid '70's hype was richly deserved. During "Sunshine Of your Love" he tears a hole in the DVD. His playing is fluid, his ideas just flow and his phrasing proves that he's successfully studied the Hendrix canon. He plays well over the solid drumming of Simon Kirke and Ringo and the subtly shifting bass of Jack Bruce (also still in great voice). He follows "Sunshine" with a stunning cover of "Norwegian Wood" accompanying himself only on a twelve string acoustic guitar. His performance alone is almost worth the price of the DVD.
Elsewhere, Randy Bachman rocks on "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", Todd Rundgren makes "the world get stupid" with "Bang The Drum All Day" and the professorial Gary Brooker leads the talent heavy ensemble (Ringo, Kirke, Bruce, Frampton and Mark Rivera) in "A Whiter Shade Of Pale."
This DVD is rock at it's finest. Despite their advanced ages, the members of these bands still know how to do it. Makes me hope Ringo comes back to Chicago soon.

Y Not Review

(More customer reviews)Ringo Starr's new album "Y Not" is probably the most coherant album he has recorded since 1992's "Time Takes Time". This is simple rock and roll at it's best. Ringo's last few albums have been pop oriented but this one has more grit thanks to Joe Walsh's excellent guitar riffs. The first track "Fill In The Blanks" is the best track he has recorded in years. I'm a hardcore Ringo fan and I haven't been this excited about an Ex-Beatles album since the early 80's. Really. Ringo's vocals on tracks like "Mystery Of The Night" and "The Other Side Of Liverpool" actually soar. The entire album feels like it jumped out of 1988 and that's just fine because the sound is really awesome. "Peace Dream" with Paul McCartney is produced so well that you will not be able to get enough of it - not in an annoying way. Kind of like eating really good french fries and wanting more. Ringo has churned out some excellent music in the past ten odd years and this one tops them all. No kidding. I can be a harsh critic, even for my favourite Beatle. So run to your local record store and say "Gimme that record called Y NOT!"

The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over (VHS) (1994) Review

(More customer reviews)Hell Freezes Over has to be the most realistic concert sound yet available on DVD. I have the DTS encoded six-speaker surround system with a 55" Widescreen HDTV, so the video is better than what I can see or hear at just about any motion picture theatre. I have found no other DVD that can match the production quality and sound, yet. Mostly due to the DTS encoding which is noticably superior to the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround on the home theater system. Above technical quality, the Eagles themselves perform their best yet. Comparing Hotel California on this DVD with their original is like comparing an old Chevy with a Rolls. The old Chevy is a great classic, and attractive, but the Rolls has the ride and the class. Don Felder and Joe Walsh perform better than I have ever before heard them, and playing the Alverez classical guitars on the Hotel California cut is hands-down, just the best version ever. Glenn Frey and Don Henley give impressive performances, and Timothy B. Schmidt also is at his best ever on bass and vocals. I watch it again and again. There is just no comparison to the sound of the DTS DVD and the CD of this same album. I have both and the CD is always a letdown after hearing the DVD. Well worth the price, and a DVD you will listen to again and again.

(More customer reviews)This recording is one of the best pop recordings available on CD. When analyzing high-end audio equipment, this is one of a handful that I absolutely must audition with.
Clear, tight, dynamic, you name it. Listen to the beginning of track 6, "Hotel California", especially right after 32 seconds into the track. If you have a really good system, you will probably get your hairs to stand on end.
Oh, the music itself? First class, of course. The best songs of the Eagles and all sound nice. My favorite is "Pretty Maids All In A Row" with "New York Minute" and "The Last Resort" just behind it. Of course, "Hotel California" sounds great, almost better than the original recording.
This album MUST be in your collection if you like popular music or even classic rock.

Tour 2003 Review

(More customer reviews)I saw this show at The State Theatre in Easton Pa. It was the smallest venue on the tour and I was in the second row. It was as if Beatlemania never died! I had seen the All Starr Band on every tour since the inception but this show was incredible. So much so that I went to see it again three days later at the PNC Bank Arts Center - the local amphitheater. All of the intimacy was gone and the show was less than thrilling by comparison. I love Ringo but lets just say that this recording is representative of the amphitheatre show. The sound is shallow and you get the feeling that the band is just going through the motions. As stated in other reviews, the omission of Paul carrack's incredible rendition of Tempted (A highlight of both shows) is a great disservice to music lovers. Also, the band did an acoustic version of Here Comes the Sun in tribute to George Harrison that was moving. That too is missing. This CD is for fanatics only. I'm a fanatic and yes - I'm glad I bought it.
