(More customer reviews)28 years after their last studio album, four remaining Eagles release a new album. Long Road out of Eden features 2 discs and 20 new tracks. Disc 1 is described as being a re-introduction to the band with the opening track a post nuclear vision of Seven Bridges Rd, followed by a song they forgot to record 35 years ago "How Long" by long time friend JD Souther. This stamps Eagles all over it and just gets better each time you hear it. Harmonies and all the little things which most bands would overlook, make this a classic already in the Take it Easy, Already Gone genre. Next up is Busy Being Fabulous which is an update of Those Shoes with a killer chorus and typically cynical Henley lyric. Has the Eagles sound. Next is a weepie with a countrified Frey vocal. Quite nice, Walsh steps up next with Guilyy of the Crime, whilst being pleasant is a little removed from the other material on this disc. Next up is the first of Tim Schmit's spots with a brilliant (single written all over it)I Don't want to Hear Anymore, is simply brilliant. Won't fit on contemporary radio but anyone reading this won't care anyway. Disc 1's highlight follows with Waiting in the Weeds. How to describe this song? It starts of as an acoustic, black, Henley vocal and shifts into an epic from 1st Chorus/Bridge on when Schmit/Frey's harmonies kick in. Its low fi, acoustic guitars and mandolin, but segues into something much more, the lyrics tell so many stories with multi dimensions and layers. By the end of the 7 minutes its a totally different beast, with an undeniable stamp of class. This track makes the 28 year wait all worth it.
After Weeds, all the other would seem insubstantial but in true Eagles tradition the material all stands up. No More Cloudy Days will have its fans, followed by Henley doing his best Bee Gee's impression on Fast Company. This has a killer chorus and will grow on you. Next up is a piece of Schmit brilliance with Do Something, more like his Poco work & Frey closes with another highlight You Are Not Alone.
If that wasn't enough we still have another whole disc, with the title track starting it off. This track will need some play to make it accessible but already the biting lyrics, killer Walsh guitar and atmospherics make it a dramatic, masterful tune. Long time collaborater, Jack Tempchin pitches in with a Frey lead vocal, Somebody which is a foot stomper. Henley next with Frail Grasp of the Big Picture, very Inside Job-like. Walsh with a JD Souther assist comes up with the Steely Dan like Last Good Time in Town. Frey with I like to watch a Woman Dance, is low-fi and voyeuristic, but pleasant, Three songs left, all good especially Centre of the Universe which is a modern update of the whole sound. I'm still trying to decide what the lyrics mean but I'm sure George W Bush won't download it. Business as Usual is another which could be a Henley single but has the superb Eagles harmony support. Slightly rocky, confrontational, another winner. Then the closer which if its the last song ever from the Eagles then its a fitting epitaph, lets hope its not, as this album has proved that the Eagles biggest fear is unfounded and that they are still important, vibrant, and quite simply America's greatest ever rock band.

Hotel California (DVD-Audio Surround Sound) Review

(More customer reviews)If you were around in the late 70's and were within earshot of rock and pop radio, you heard the Eagles' 'Hotel California' and if you've listened to classic rock radio since then and till today, you are familiar with this album many times over, possibly even sick of it (as you might be with Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours', Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and most of Led Zeppelin), as you might be sick of Eagles music in general. However, just this Christmas day, I was with family, and the household happened to have a superb DVD/Dolby surround setup and the man of the house received the DVD-A of 'Hotel California' as a gift. He put it on, and I was there to experience this already time-honored album in glorious multi-channel surround sound. If you thought you've heard enough of the Eagles' best album, you ought to give this a chance -- the classic title track alone makes it worth the purchase. You will hear cymbal swells, guitar parts separated and panned, vocals and all that is the musical brilliance of this album as you never have before. "Wasted Time" sounds so good it will make you weep (this was always one of my favorite Eagles album tracks, as is "The Last Resort", also benefitting from the DVD-A treatment) ... highly recommended for Eagles, classic rock, and music fans in general needing to hear how good either the DVD-A or SACD format can be.

Eagles Catalog Box Set Review

(More customer reviews)This is a 9-CD limited edition (only 20,000 copies) of The Eagles' entire Asylum recordings from 1972's self-titled debut through 1980's EAGLES LIVE (on 2CDs) plus a bonus CD containing their 1978 holiday single "Please Come Home for Christmas" and "Funky New Year." [Because this box set only covers the Asylum years, it does not include the 1994 Geffen album HELL FREEZES OVER or their 2003 single "Hole in the World."]
The CDs are housed in replicas of the original vinyl albums and include the original artwork. Serious Eagles fans will eagerly make the purchase, but casual fans will be content with 2003's 2-disc THE VERY BEST OF. After all, there is no bonus material here--even though none of these CDs are longer than 45 minutes (and the CD single is barely 7 minutes!).
There's no denying, however, the group's popularity. They have sold more than 83 million albums. [GREATEST HITS alone has sold more than 27 million!] Only the Beatles and Led Zeppelin have sold more records. Throughout the seventies, Don Henley and Glenn Frey were the Lennon and McCartney of the era, penning virtually all of their hits, including classics like "Best of My Love," "One of These Nights," "Lyin' Eyes," "Take It to the Limit" (with Randy Meisner) and "Hotel California" (with Don Felder).
This box set is a little pricey, but the music it contains is priceless. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Eagles reunited in the studio for 1994's Hell Freezes Over, and they continue to tour to great acclaim, but their reputation was made on the stellar repertoire they recorded from '72-'80, presented here in one collection for the first time. It all began in the early '70s when the band soared above their origins as harmony-heavy roots-rockers to emerge as the defining artists of the influential Southern California scene. They delivered four consecutive #1 albums that decade; three are contained herein (the fourth was their 1976 Greatest Hits). Ultimately they became one of the all-time biggest acts in contemporary music. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, they made the R.I.A.A.'s elite Artists of the Century list in 1999.

Don Henley Live - Inside Job (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)You all know Henley so I'll spare the career retrospective. This DVD was taped May 25, 2000 at Fair Park Music Hall in Dallas. From the opener of Dirty Laundry through the entire set and closing with Hotel California, this is a great show by a fantastic song writer. Don's voice sounds great on this night and his back-up band is very sharp. Not a lot of talk between songs, but one great tune after another. The other songs include Sunset Grill, Workin' It, Taking You Home, The Boys of Summer, Lilah, Everything is Different Now, The End of the Innocence, All She Wants to Do is Dance, New York Minute, Talking to the Moon, They're Not Here (They're Not Coming), The Heart of the Matter, Desperado, The Long Run, and My Thanksgiving.
That covers the show, now on to the DVD features... well, there really aren't any. The sound quality is excellent and the production is flawless, but no multiple camera angles, no extras, no videos, just a short intro then on to the show. I'm not complaining as the show is fantastic, but if you like whistles and bells look elsewhere. If you love Henley, the Eagles or just great music then you'll still love it.

Inside Job Review

(More customer reviews)Let's face it, I'd take Don Henley over most of the trash I'm hearing on the radio these days and seeing on MTV. I've read much of the criticism surrounding this cd. Don Henley's too critical, he's too this, he's too that. Who are the people reviewing his disc? Have they forgotten that Henley has always had a myopic view on life? Even when he was with the Eagles, don't you remember the lyrics to "Life In The Fast Lane"? As for Henley's past solo works, he was just the same with "Dirty Laundry", "Driving With Your Eyes Closed", and "The End Of The Innocence" lyrically, and viewpoint-wise, as he is on his new cd. The fact that Henley sings about the record business, a place where he works, in a less than positive way, takes guts. How many people can stand up to their bosses and say they're not happy with the way things are run? On "Inside Job" I believe Henley's edge is softer. Sure, his insights are pessimistic, but they are awfully close to the truth and that's something few people like to hear. Musically, this cd is probably not as well played as his earlier work, but who said it is Henley's job to outdo a catalog that most artists would be enviable of? Also, Henley is over 50 now, and I don't expect him to make music like he used to. He's also been out of the music scene for 11 years, so if this cd seems shakey, allow some slack. As for using drum machines, I think it's good. I think Henley is getting with the times. His other albums had instrumentation that was popular at that time too, and I didn't hear any complaints about synthesizers. I happen to appreciate Henley for writing about the human condition from an insightful standpoint like Dylan, Springsteen, Waits, Mellencamp and Lennon. Today, there are so few artists that even care to sing and write about the world they live in. Everything's sex and violence (Stanley Kubrick would be proud). With "Inside Job" the trouble isn't Henley's viewpoint, it's the music. It's certainly debatable as to whether Henley has made his best possible effort here, but as it is, it's at least four stars. It's not garbage. Garbage is mostly what you hear on the radio today. Hey, Henley didn't sample someone elses music did he? He's not singing about sex and violence from an immature perspective is he? Maybe some of the reviewers should lighten up?

It's like hearing them for the first time ever.The acoustic guitars and Eagles trademark harmonies float out of the speakers with breathtaking clarity.Randy Meisner's harmony vocals on Take It Easy are so clear you'd swear he was in the room.The original Eagles cd's were done from the compressed album masters and a quick A/B comparison test with those and the remasters will astound you.If you don't own any Eagles cd's pick them up in order, you can't go wrong! I haven't seen the two Greatest Hits cd's remastered yet but forget them and pick up the original albums. There are just too many great tracks that aren't on those like Saturday Night, James Dean, Ol'55, After The Thrill Is Gone, Visions, Midnight Flyer, Doolin' Dalton, The Last Resort, and many many more.The cd's were remastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York City in March of 1999. Finally we can hear these classics in all their sonic glory!

Building the Perfect Beast Review

(More customer reviews)The Eagles are obviously considered a classic band. That said, Don Henley is the brightest, most original member of that band as a solo artist. He has only released three studio cds since 1982, and all of them are excellent recordings. His latest, Otherwise, is due in about a month, and I, like other fans, have waited 11 long years for this. Building the Perfect Beast (BTPB), is, I think, his best recording to date. Why? Well, aside from the hits "Boys of Summer", "All She Wants To Do Is Dance", "Not Enough Love In The World", "Driving With Your Eyes Closed" and "Sunset Grill" it has great album tracks like "Man With A Mission", "A Month of Sundays", "Land Of The Living", "Building The Perfect Beast" and "You're Not Drinking Enough." All the eleven tracks come together to form a classic cd. The recording quality and choice of instruments is excellent. It still sounds fresh 16 years later. The lyrics and music work together to form a more cohesive cd than 1982's I Can't Stand Still. While 1989's The End of the Innocence is probably more mature and refined than BTPB, BTPB has more edge to it, and possibly a fresher sound overall. I think any rock collector should not only have The Eagles, but should also have all three Henley (soon to be four) cds. However, if you only have money for one, Building the Perfect Beast is the one to own.

The Long Run Review

(More customer reviews)If you have to go out, you should go out with a bang. The Eagles did that with this album, which yielded three singles: "The Long Run", "Heartache Tonight", and "I Can't Tell You Why". The three songs may sound similar to some, but the third song was a mellow ballad, the second had a fast beat with solid percussion, and the first song, as much as I enjoyed it, I always thought of as The Eagle in molasses. A good song, but I always thought the song strained to be sped up.
Not to be overlooked on this album is the last song, "The Sad Cafe", which is a swan song for The Eagles much like "The Long and Winding Road" was The Beatles' swan song. The bluesy, sad song ends the 1972 to 1979 run of The Eagles nostalgically. Coincidentally the end of The Eagles coincided with the end of the decade, the eminence of disco and the transition to New Wave and the techno driven pop of the 80s. Looking back, perhaps it was time for The Eagle to move on to other things (though I still don't think so).
The rest of the album is decent, generally listenable. Six of the songs were co-written by at least three people. The other four songs were written by two people. Glenn Frey and Don Henley contributed the most, but I still think that the huge difference between "Hotel California", "The Long Run" and what came before shows the influence of Joe Walsh. After the break up of The Eagles, Glenn and Don were considered sufficiently up-to-date to have their music selected for the then extremely stylish and modern "Miami Vice". Quite a change from the early cowboy boots and rattlesnakes era of The Eagles.
Perhaps this album wasn't their best. I think it would be more fair to say it is not my favorite Eagles' album. But who cares? We all have our own favorites. The question is whether the album is worth owning. I think it is. I prefer this album over the second greatest hits collection that was largely from "Hotel California" and "The Long Run". If you are influenced by the other reviews to be concerned that you might not like many of the songs on this CD, then buy the second volume of The Eagles' greatest hits and pass this one by. I think it is a good album and worth having in my collection.

The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over (VHS) (1994) Review

(More customer reviews)Hell Freezes Over has to be the most realistic concert sound yet available on DVD. I have the DTS encoded six-speaker surround system with a 55" Widescreen HDTV, so the video is better than what I can see or hear at just about any motion picture theatre. I have found no other DVD that can match the production quality and sound, yet. Mostly due to the DTS encoding which is noticably superior to the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround on the home theater system. Above technical quality, the Eagles themselves perform their best yet. Comparing Hotel California on this DVD with their original is like comparing an old Chevy with a Rolls. The old Chevy is a great classic, and attractive, but the Rolls has the ride and the class. Don Felder and Joe Walsh perform better than I have ever before heard them, and playing the Alverez classical guitars on the Hotel California cut is hands-down, just the best version ever. Glenn Frey and Don Henley give impressive performances, and Timothy B. Schmidt also is at his best ever on bass and vocals. I watch it again and again. There is just no comparison to the sound of the DTS DVD and the CD of this same album. I have both and the CD is always a letdown after hearing the DVD. Well worth the price, and a DVD you will listen to again and again.

(More customer reviews)This recording is one of the best pop recordings available on CD. When analyzing high-end audio equipment, this is one of a handful that I absolutely must audition with.
Clear, tight, dynamic, you name it. Listen to the beginning of track 6, "Hotel California", especially right after 32 seconds into the track. If you have a really good system, you will probably get your hairs to stand on end.
Oh, the music itself? First class, of course. The best songs of the Eagles and all sound nice. My favorite is "Pretty Maids All In A Row" with "New York Minute" and "The Last Resort" just behind it. Of course, "Hotel California" sounds great, almost better than the original recording.
This album MUST be in your collection if you like popular music or even classic rock.

Vol. 1-Farewell Tour-Live from Melbourne (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)I just watched the concert on NBC using my High Definition TV broadcast, and 5.1 surround sound audio. It was absolutely terrific.
Every member of the group sounded great. Don Henley looked a bit heavy, and older, but sounded just fine.
If your favorite Eagle is Joe Walsh, this is the concert for you.
He sang more on this concert, and was great as always.
This concert contained almost every one of their hits, and left out a lot of their lesser known materials. Don Henley mentioned in some of his commentary that they don't mind at all doing their hits, even though they've performed them hundreds of times, and in fact thinks they've improved the songs and their performances over the years. I agree. In my opinion, this is a better concert than Hell Freezes Over, and that was very good.
How many bands can you name that have a country sound and are as popular with rockers as well as country, and have been around over 30 years?
Just great!!! By the way, the video and sound quality are top notch.
