(More customer reviews)As a long time phan of Jimmy Buffett, I was curious about his new country collaboration. LICENSE TO CHILL does not disappoint.
All the voices on HEY, GOOD LOOKIN' do their part to make it a rousing success, sure to get plenty of air time. BOATS TO BUILD is reflective and Alan Jackson's soulfulness rounds it out perfectly.
The title cut will probably be the next "single" release. Jimmy and Kenny have a good time and I like the tune, but I think it could have been better. Couldn't say how, it just leaves me a little flat.
COAST OF CAROLINA, Jimmy's valentine to his wife, Jane, is about as sweet a love song as you're ever going to find.
The in your face PIECE OF WORK is a great romp with county's rebellious Toby Keith. If you don't smile when you hear it, you've never met a real life "Bubba".
ANYTHING, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE is another great love song. "Tomorrow may come. It usually does. Don't know what it brings to the two of us. I just want you to know what I'm ready to do . . . anything, anytime, anywhere for you." Awwwwwwwwwwww.
Martina McBride joins the fun for a look at birthdays in TRIP ROUND THE SUN. This was the only pairing that was missing chemistry . . . or, at least to my ears.
SIMPLY COMPLICATED is Jimmy's wink at a "my wife left, my dog died, someone stole my truck, and I'm outta beer" drinking song. Hysterical.
COASTAL CONFESSIONS is one of the buried treasures in this collection. It might not get airplay, but it's a great story. "I'm a tidal pool explorer from the days of my misspent youth. I believe that down on the beach where the seagulls preach is where the Chinese buried the truth. . . I'm a reader of the night sky and a singer of inordinate tunes. That's how I float across time, living way past my prime. . . " Genius.
If you're from (1) the 50's or even the early 60's and (2) the south, SEA OF HEARTBREAK might evoke memories of your parents going out on the town. All dressed up . . . a cocktail or two consumed. And the Hi-Fi playing the latest dance tune. Cha-Cha-Cha. George Strait is so smooth . . . he and Jimmy are near perfection. This is my favorite cut.
CONKY TONKIN' is cute, upbeat and makes you want to get in the car and drive down Highway 1 to Key West.
PLAYING THE LOSER AGAIN with Bill Withers reminds me of Merle Haggard. In a good way.
I haven't figured out WINDOW ON THE WORLD yet.
Nanci Griffith's weathered voice blends with Jimmy's on SOMEONE I USED TO LOVE, with great results.
I'm not a fan of SCARLET BEGONIAS, but I understand Jimmy's mother loved the song, so maybe it's his tribute to her.
His cover of Leon Russell's BACK TO THE ISLAND isn't as good as it was in Hawaii this past January, but then NOTHING will ever top that night under the Maui moon.
There's been a lot of discussion/debate about Jimmy's crossover to country. Oh, well. He done good.

Beach House On The Moon Review

(More customer reviews)I broke up with my first serious boyfriend the summer that "Margaritaville" hit the charts, and I will always remember it vividly. Listened to this CD at work... popped it into my computer, and WOW. There was Jimmy on the screen. If you haven't yet check out the enhanced video that you can watch on your computer. The songs are more deliberate and lyrical than some of his other work. I especially liked the title cut and "Oysters & Pearls." Gave it to my little sister for her 40th birthday and she proclaimed it her "favorite present." From the other reviews, I would suggest previewing this CD but I think older parrotheads will love it.

Off to See the Lizard Review

(More customer reviews)Jimmy runs at different speeds. Sometimes he's singing wistful songs, sometimes he's a musical storyteller, sometimes he likes to get (relatively) rowdy, and sometimes he just likes screwing around having fun.
Most of his fans, though, seem to want just one or two of their favorite flavors of Jimmy all the time. Hence the reaction to "Off to See the Lizard." Even the most introspective of tunes on the album -- "Take Another Road" -- is still couched in melodies and lyrics that make it a fun, playful tune. And that rubs fans looking for something else from this album the wrong way. So be it.
I happen to greatly enjoy this album, but part of that is because of something that Parrothead completists should take note of: This album is a companion piece to Jimmy's first book, "Tales from Margaritaville." The songs and stories overlap to a great degree, and songs like "The Pascagoula Run" are fleshed out in the book, although they still retain a lot of their charm here. Even seeming novelty tunes like the title track get further explanation in the book -- the story turns out to be about a very odd high school football mascot.
Overall, this is a charming and fun album and a good buy for Parrotheads looking for just that, or those who want to deepen their appreciation for "Tales from Margaritaville."

Springtime means the Big Kahuna is going on tour and a Jimmy Buffett tour means it's time to break out the flip-flops, tropical party favors, the Margarita machine and Buffett's latest album.
Parrotheads (Jimmy's fans) are lining up for "Live at Texas Stadium," recorded with George Strait and Alan Jackson during their 2004 stadium mega- show in Irving.
During their long careers, Jackson, Strait and Buffett have separately released over "85 number one singles, and sold more than 120,000,000 records," according to a press release from MCA-Nashville, the record's distributor.
Although Buffett is famous for "Margaritaville," he actually got his start in country music, working in Nashville during the late 1960s. It wasn't until good friend Jerry Jeff Walker took him to Key West that Buffett discovered the island point of view, his considerable song writing skills and developed his happy, laid back style of music.
Buffett and Strait team up on three cuts, "All My Ex's Live in Texas," Hank Williams' "Hey, Good Looking" and "Sea of Heartbreak." Strait's smooth vocal styling is the perfect foil for Buffett's world-weathered sound.
If you're from the 50s or even the early 60s and you grew up in the south, Jimmy and King George's cover of the Don Gibson hit "Sea of Heartbreak" might evoke memories of a Saturday night when your parents were going out on the town. They were all dressed up, with Hi-Fi playing the latest dance tune. Cha-cha-cha.
Of course, Buffett and Jackson do a great turn on the Grammy-nominated "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," their huge 2003 hit. The song spent 38 weeks on the top 40 charts, including a five-week stint at number 1. The duet won a limousine full of awards for the song, too.
Strait and Jackson step up to the microphone and deliver some pure country on "Murder on Music Row" and they wail on "Cowboys Like Us."
Strait and his Ace in the Hole band have a rollicking good time with Bob Wills' "Milk Cow Blues" and Jackson proves why he's one of the best voices in country music on his cover of The Eagles' "Seven Bridges Road." The tight harmonies are incredible, especially considering they were done in front of a live audience. The album wouldn't be complete without a visit to "Margaritaville," and Jackson adds a nice dimension to the parrothead national anthem.
One of the more pleasant surprises on the CD has to be Buffett and Jackson teaming up on "Boats to Build." The song was written by Texan Guy Clark and it's a great choice for the two musicians, who first met when they were out cruising around the Caribbean.
Long-time parrotheads will be delighted that Jimmy chose to include Willis Alan Ramsey's song, "Northeast Texas Women," on his set list for the show.
Buffett, Ramsey, a Dallas native, and Jerry Jeff Walker used to hang out together during the early 70s, playing the bars on lower Greenville Avenue in Dallas, struggling to make a living the music business.
Ramsey's self-titled 1972 album has influenced musicians for years, including Buffett and Walker, who have covered some Ramsey' tunes, including "The Ballad of Spider John."
Ramsey's second album, "Gentilly," is due out later this spring, so maybe including the tune on the new CD is Buffett's way of tipping his hat to his old friend.

They're right there for the picking,
just as pretty as you please.
You're smiling now, right?
Smiling and happiness is what Buffett does best. He's so much more than "Margaritaville" and "Come Monday."
Buffett's been playing happy music for over 30 years and after more than 20 albums, he obviously knows what his fans want. The album from the historic Texas Stadium show is no different. Having George Strait and Alan Jackson on the stage just makes listening to the 15 songs three times the fun.
Buffett and his talented Coral Reefer Band are about to head out on the road. The Bama Breeze Tour takes its name from a cut from Buffett's last solo CD, "Take the Weather with You." Pick up the CD, get out your brightest Hawaiian shirt, put on your flip flops and go to a Buffett show. It's the most fun you'll ever have -- legal.

(More customer reviews)My box arrived and I tossed the 2nd disc in the player right away. I was lucky enough to have gone to the 1st of his two shows and reliving it was great (the sunday show footage is on the 2nd disc and monday is on the first). The video quality is generally very good and so is the audio quality. It seems like one of the cameras was a little grainy, but in general it is very crisp. I was going to wait to preview it first on netflix, but decided to dive right in. Im glad I did!
And dont worry. Even though Amazon has the wrong cover and only lists it as 1 disc, it is the same thing being sold everywhere else. It is 2 DVD's and says "Live At Wrigley Field" down the right side of the front.

Live in Hawaii (With Bonus DVD) Review

(More customer reviews)Although most of the songs on the Hawaii concert are the same as the earlier Tiki-Tour albums (Cincinatti, Mannsfield, etc.) this concert stands out far above the rest...and easily rivals his previous live albums such as Feeding Frenzy and Tues-Thurs-Sat. Why? Because the energy and playfulness of this album is far beyond anything Jimmy has done in years. This is Jimmy at his best. The instrumentation is crystal clear and the transition of songs works extremely well, and with wonderful introductions. This concert rocks from start to finish and offers great versions of his classic and newest songs, while flawlessly mixing in a variety of musical styles such as Hula, Zydeco, Latin, and Jitterbug Swing. This is the ultimate concert...and easily stands on its own. Great Job Jimmy! If I could only own one Jimmy Buffett album, this would definitely be the one. It has it all.
