Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies (DVD Audio) Review

Warner Brothers has done a superb job with this deluxe edition reissue of "Billion Dollar Babies", arguably the pinnacle of Alice Cooper's influential career. Every aspect of this product is top-notch, and an incredible value for the price.
First of all, the album itself still rocks with a tight, muscular power that puts all the pretenders and wannabes who have followed in Cooper's tracks firmly in their place. The original Alice Cooper group was captured at its peak here, with assistance from guitar virtuosos Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner (both of whom would later play on Lou Reed's legendary "Rock n Roll Animal" before becoming mainstays in Cooper's revamped band). "Billion Dollar Babies" spawned many of the band's biggest hits ('Hello Hooray', 'Elected', 'No More Mr. Nice Guy', and the title cut), and features 'Generation Landslide' - a wry piece of socio-political commentary from Cooper.
The package contains a generous second CD of well-recorded live material (taken from the tour supporting "Billion Dollar Babies"), as well as studio outtakes. The original album jacket artwork has been recreated, along with lyrics, photos and some illuminating commentary in a 24-page booklet. Remastering was coordinated under the supervision of the album's original producer, Bob Ezrin.
One listen to this beautifully restored classic, and you may well wonder what all the fuss is about characters like Marilyn Manson.

Hotel California (DVD-Audio Surround Sound) Review

If you were around in the late 70's and were within earshot of rock and pop radio, you heard the Eagles' 'Hotel California' and if you've listened to classic rock radio since then and till today, you are familiar with this album many times over, possibly even sick of it (as you might be with Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours', Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and most of Led Zeppelin), as you might be sick of Eagles music in general. However, just this Christmas day, I was with family, and the household happened to have a superb DVD/Dolby surround setup and the man of the house received the DVD-A of 'Hotel California' as a gift. He put it on, and I was there to experience this already time-honored album in glorious multi-channel surround sound. If you thought you've heard enough of the Eagles' best album, you ought to give this a chance -- the classic title track alone makes it worth the purchase. You will hear cymbal swells, guitar parts separated and panned, vocals and all that is the musical brilliance of this album as you never have before. "Wasted Time" sounds so good it will make you weep (this was always one of my favorite Eagles album tracks, as is "The Last Resort", also benefitting from the DVD-A treatment) ... highly recommended for Eagles, classic rock, and music fans in general needing to hear how good either the DVD-A or SACD format can be.

Shangri La (CD & DVD Audio) Review

Shangri La (CD and DVD Audio)

This CD will take you time to appreciate. At first listen I thought "elevator music" -- rock so light it isn't rock. It takes a while to appreciate the subtleties and the quiet, quiet songs. (The reviewer who said this was Knopfler's most rocking effort since Dire Straits days obviously had never heard the CD. The only semi-rocking song is "Boom like That")

The CD also lacks the variety of recent Knopfler efforts. Gone are the Celtic, Country, Cajun, and Folk tunes that dotted his other CDs. Instead, "Shangri-la" is just six guys -- two guitars, a bass, a piano, an organ, and drums, sitting around playing relaxed songs. The CD gets my top rating for good lyrics, interesting tunes, virtuoso instrumentation, perfectionist fussiness, and Knopfler's voice, which sounds a little smoother with age than his usual Dylanesque gruffness. It's not a CD that inspires superlatives, and none of the songs will likely go to the top of the hit parade, but they're good -- every one of them. Some of them even have a little bit of a surf sound, reflecting perhaps the fact that the CD was recorded in California
Still, I can appreciate the opinion of those who say "Shangri-la" is boring. I yearn for one of Knopfler's great guitar solos like the screamers on "Telegraph Road," the chugging "Sultans of Swing," or the smoky country blues of "You and your Friend." No such luck. Are Knopfler's rocking days over? I guess we'll have to be content with what we get.

The fourth solo excursion from acclaimed singer-songwriter-guitarist Mark Knopfler, Shangri-La is perhaps his most rocking album since his halcyon days in Dire Straits. Knopfler offers an idyllic earthly refuge for the sophisticated rock fan with Shangri-La, originally issued in September 2004 and presented here in a special CD+DVDA package.

The Game DVD-AUDIO Review

Queen The Game DTS: The production is great on this re-issue. A good amount of warmth to the bass and durms and an over all clear fat sound. You can't go wrong with the songs on this disc. There are the classics: Another One Bites the Dust, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Play the Game, Dragon Attack, Save Me and so on. The only dissapointing fact with this disc is the photo gallery. Queen fans have seen these pics and there could have been more extras, like some rare live tracks from the Game Tour or a live video from the tour.
