The Killers - Live From The Royal Albert Hall (DVD & CD) Review

The Killers - Live From The Royal Albert Hall (DVD and CD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Killers - Live From Royal Albert Hall is an excellent concert video, revealing The Killers as brilliant musicians, both individually and in ensemble. Ronnie Vannucci's drums beat at the center of this astounding group like the steady heart of a seasoned jazz musician: always alive, always responsive to the band, always in perfectly chosen tempo. Dave Keuning, on guitars, is lightyears beyond the generalized strumming of most rock chord-players, speaking to us articulately and beautifully with his nimble fingers. On Bass, Mark Stoermer is powerful and elegant, never missing a step, or beat, and is vigilantly alert to his fellow musicians, always nuanced.
The group inspires total confidence, which is in no small part due to the astonishing talent of Brandon Flowers, a singer whose grasp of vocal possibility, both technically and creatively, is far beyond his years. His pastiche of power, nuance, simplicity, refinement, flawless technique, and elegance place him solidly in the pantheon of great singers. Did I mention power? At 28, he has a command of his instrument, and an insight into it's mysteries, that most advanced artists do not begin to approach before they are in their 40's. And like all the greatest musicians, he is always listening: watch him listen to the band, to his audience. Simply put, he is a phenomenon: delivering unbroken passion in perfect balance with his skill. Never missing a note or moment of connection, his attention is always with his audience, with giving them the best, and ALL of it. And they are ready and willing to take him up on his offer.
The concert DVD / Blu-ray is first rate, mostly due to The Killers all-around brilliant talent as performers and composers, Flowers' lyrics always interesting, always impressionistic and captivating. The audience of fans delivers what has come to be expected by Killers followers: total enthrall and open-hearted excitment. Killers fans are always smiling. And as this concert proves, so are The Killers. Seldom, if ever, have I seen a band (or solo performer) project such open-hearted enjoyment, pure joy, at making music. Flowers and Vannucci never stop smiling, and neither do we. This DVD is simply brilliant.

Now The Killers know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall. On July 5-6th, during their 8-country European festival tour, the multi-platinum VMA Award-winning, Grammy-nominated band performed two historic nights at the legendary Kensington venue. LIVE FROM THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, The Killers' first official DVD release, is a spectacular 22-song live concert experience - filmed in HD (with 'Fan's Eye View' alternative camera angle) and full 5.1 sound. The package, with live performances on the DVD plus a 17-song live CD from the shows (unavailable elsewhere), will be released November 10th on Island Records. Killers fans will appreciate how faithful the DVD is to the band's sight and sound onstage. Moreover, the songs cut across all four of the Killers' album releases, from their debut Hot Fuss ("Somebody Told Me," "Smile Like You Mean It," "Mr. Brightside," "All These Things That I've Done," "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine"); to Sam's Town ("For Reasons Unknown," "Bling (Confessions Of A King)," "Sam's Town (acoustic)," "Read My Mind," "The River Is Wild," "When You Were Young"); to Sawdust ("Shadowplay," "Sweet Talk"); and Day & Age ("Human," "This Is Your Life," "The World We Live In," "Joy Ride," "I Can't Stay," "Losing Touch," "Spaceman").
The DVD, who's running time is over 2 hours, is packed with bonus extras - starting with an additional five songs from the festival tour: "Tranquilize" (live at the Oxegen Festival in Ireland, July 12th); "Human" and "Mr. Brightside" (from Hyde Park in London on June 26th); and "Smile Like You Mean It" and "When We Were Young" (from the V Festival in August). A behind-the-scenes documentary, including interviews with crew and fans, rounds out the bonus content on the DVD. The 78-minute live CD was mastered by British producer Stuart Price.

Erasure - Hits The Videos (2003) Review

Erasure - Hits The Videos (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This outstanding two-disc DVD set released in 2003 is really a must-have for Erasure fans. Disc one contains thirty-five videos presented in chronological order (though one can of course "play all" or pick and choose which videos to watch). It commences with Who Needs Love Like That from 1985's debut album, Wonderland, and includes all twenty videos that were on 1992's Pop! VHS (for those unfamiliar with the VHS, it's the same track listing that's on the Pop! CD). It includes all four videos from Abba-esque and twleve videos from the albums Erasure has done since Pop!. For those interested, the final twelve videos are: Always, Run To The Sun, and I Love Saturday (from I Say I Say I Say); Stay With Me, Fingers & Thumbs, and Rock Me Gently (from Erasure); In My Arms, Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me, and Rain (from Rain); Freedom (from Loveboat); and Solsbury Hill and Make Me Smile (from Other People's Songs).
Disc two is loaded with extra features, and is every bit as enjoyable disc one. There are six promo "documentaries" made at the time of release of six of Erasure's albums. The "documentaries" are actually interviews with Vince Clarke and Andy Bell with clips of videos or live performances interspersed. The oldest interview is from 1991 (ostensibly to promote Chorus and clocking in at 24 minutes), and it is the only one not to include Andy. The next are from 1992 (Pop! at 30 minutes), 1994 (I Say I Say I Say at 26 minutes), 1995 (Erasure at 15 minutes), 1997 (Cowboy at 4 minutes), and 2003 (Hits! at 27 minutes). The 2003 interview is the only one not to include any video/performance clips. In the interviews, Vince and Andy talk about everything from their song writing, to their views on making videos and touring, to how they teamed up, to their personalities and their relationship with each other, and so on. Personally, I really enjoyed the interviews and am grateful to have them on this set.
Disc two also includes their debut performance of Sometimes on the UK's Top of the Pops from 1986; two alternate videos (an acoustic version of Solo Luminous, and a US version of In My Arms); a video from 1990 promoting Aids awareness; and live performances of five songs from five tours (Leave me to Bleed from 1987, A Little Respect from 1988, Supernature from 1989, Waiting for the Day from 1992, and Fingers & Thumbs from 1996). I've never seen Erasure live, and so really appreciated the inclusion of a few clips from their live tours. They've obviously put on some spectacular shows, and Andy has some wild costumes (Vince has his moments too!). It's an aspect of Erasure that one really doesn't get to see much of in the videos, and I think a lot of fans (myself included!) would love to see one of their concerts filmed for DVD release.
Finally, there are two bonus "hidden" clips on disc two. In the "Interview" section, press the left arrow and one of the background silhouettes becomes highlighted. Click enter and it plays a live performance Wooden Heart (the old Elvis song). In the "Rare Videos" section, press the right arrow and click enter for an alternate version of Oh L'Amour. Lastly, if you press the up arrow (and enter) whilst on the main menu, it plays the standard version of Who Needs Love Like That.
In conclusion, I highly, highly recommend this DVD set to anyone who enjoys the gorgeous, feel-good music of this outstanding, enormously talented British pop duo. It's definitely a collection to be watched and rewatched. I hope these guys will continue to make music for a long time yet--and that they will continue to release DVDs of videos, interviews and live performances in the future for those of us in North America who would otherwise never have a chance to see any of this material!

I have to start off by saying that I too am very disappointed that there are no music videos on the DVD. I swear I remember hearing that there were going to be videos. Nevertheless, I think the DVD succeeds on its own merit. The documentary itself is very interesting and I feel like I know Kelly a lot better after watching it. By the way, the six music tracks they were referring to were included in the documentary. They were played during the documentary. I definitely think the DVD should have included music videos, or at least more special features. It is still a good purchase if you are a Kelly Clarkson fan, but don't buy it if you want music videos.

Bon Jovi: Live from London (1995)

I've now gotten my hands on the Crush Tour DVD and this one. Maybe I should have watched this one first, at least that way I would have been pleasantly surprised when I watched the Crush Tour disc. The quality of this disc (audio and video) is [horrible].
That's not to say that the performance was bad. C'mon, this is Bon Jovi for crying out loud. They practically created the arena rock show. The show is [wonderful]. That's a given. I've wanted to get this disc for a while because it has live performances of some of their obsure stuff (This Ain't a Love Song, Hey God). Those rock. The problem lies in the presentation.
The video quality of this disc is terrible. They must have used the same master as for the VHS tape. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they used the VHS tape AS the master. Grainy grainy grainy. At least I get to see what the people in the cheap seats saw. When the shot pulls out, all you see are dots moving around the stage. The quality of video doesn't improve at all during the entire show. Too bad...
The sound is presented in Dolby 2.0. You gots it...Left and Right only. After hearing the Crush Tour disc, you'll be plenty disappointed with this one. Now granted, there are about two years of development separating these discs, but I know there are discs from the same time that used 5.1 or at least Doly Surround.
The Million Dollar Question: Do I suggest that you buy this disc? Answer: Only if you're a hardcore Bon Jovi fan (like myself). Did this disc come out about the time they were switching labels? It reallys seems like Polygram (or whoever) wanted to rush this thing out to make a quick buck. There are no extras on the disc, except a "video" for these days that was spliced from footage of this concert. You can't fault the guys in the band, they held up their end of the deal. They put on a rip-rocking show. Blame the producers for the way this disc falls on its face.

Pet Shop Boys - Somewhere Review

Pet Shop Boys - Somewhere

The DVD has not been released at the time of this review. I do have the VCD version from Malaysia.
Instead of touring, the Pet Shop Boys held concerts for 3 weeks at the Savoy Theatre in London's west end.
This program begins with a behind-the-scenes documentary. You can watch PSB practice and get prepared for the show. There are great interviews and interaction between the boys.
Then, the concert begins. It is FABULOUS. If you like the Pet Shop Boys, or any electronic music, you'll really enjoy this concert. They play great songs from many of their albums, while avoiding the worn out hits.
This concert is more simple than their "Performance" concert, which had too much going on for my taste. There is a very clever stage setup, and use of big screens that are marvelous. (I won't let the cat out of the bag on what they do with the screens.) Neil's vocals are great - the concert is perfect!
There is the documentary, then the following songs: Yesterday When I Was Mad, Truck Driver and his Mate, Se a Vida é, Hallo Spaceboy, To Step Aside, Go West, The Theatre, It's a Sin/I Will Survive, Discoteca, Can You Forgive Her?, Somewhere, Rent, Being Boring, Left to my Own Devices.
I highly suggest you order this DVD. It is so cheap! If you're a fan, I know you'll buy it. If you're not very familiar with PSB, this will introduce you to the boys, and give you a chance to see them at their best.

Poison - Seven Days Live (1993) Review

Poison - Seven Days Live (1993)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Poison's new DVD "Seven Days Live," (2006) from the band's performance at London's Hammersmith Apollo is a very unusual and unexpected concert that the band would choose to release. One might expect Poison to release a DVD from a more recent tour (which is more or less a nostalgia act) or release a DVD from the 1990 "Flesh and Blood" tour, when the band was at its commercial peak. But a show from 1993 is totally surprising for a few reasons.
First, this lineup of Poison features guitarist Ritchie Kotzen, stepping in for C.C. Deville, who left Poison from 1991 to 1996. Kotzen made only one album with Poison, 1993's mature and bluesy "Native Tongue," before being fired for shagging drummer Rikki Rocket's fiancé. It seems odd to release a DVD with Kotzen, considering that his tenure in the band was so short lived and that the classic lineup of Poison, with C.C., is hands down the definitive version of the band.
Another reason a show from '93 is an unusual choice is that the set list relies heavily from the band's "Native Tongue" (1993) album. Although "Native Tongue" is a strong and well-written album, it was a relative failure. "Native Tongue" was the band's first album that failed to go platinum, winding up in the dreaded cut-out bin, sitting next to Vince Neil's "Exposed," (1993) Motley Crue's 1994 self-titled album, and David Lee Roth's "A Little Ain't Enough" (1991) by the end of 1994. "Native Tongue" is now out-of-print and is only available used or as a cut-out. It seems odd to release a DVD from a concert showcasing an album that was virtually ignored upon its release and is now forgotten.
All this taken into consideration, a show from 1993 is either desirable or undesirable, depending on what you're looking for. If you are a casual fan or a Poison purist, and want a show of all the hits, you may find yourself disappointed with this DVD. As previously stated, a lot of the songs (nearly half) are from the "Native Tongue" album and many fans will probably be unfamiliar with that material. Also, Kotzen is far more technically proficient than C.C. Deville, and jazzes up the solos from the C.C. material, so purists may be put-off, or they may just be put off by seeing anyone but C.C. on lead guitar.
But other fans may get a lot out of this DVD. I've seen Poison a few times in the last few years, and although I always enjoy the show, I am disappointed that they play virtually the same songs all the time. It's as though the band is frozen in 1990. While a Poison show in the 00s is still a lot of fun, it's most definitely a nostalgia act. With this DVD, it's great to see the band out promoting fresh material. I really enjoyed the "Native Tongue" album, so it's great to hear those songs performed live, because the band nowadays certainly won't do it (although they have played "Stand" with C.C.) And while some fans may not like Kotzen's interpretations of the songs, I find them to be a refreshing change of pace.
Recorded at London's Hammersmith Apollo on April, 23, 1993, among a wildly enthusiastic sold-out crowd, it's easy to forget that outside the hall, most of the audience that so loved Poison only a few years before, were now listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. It's a shame that Poison never really survived grunge and has now been reduced to being a nostalgia act, because they deserve better. With "Native Tongue," the band didn't jump on any bandwagon or rehash a tired formula. With "Native Tongue" the band made an earnest attempt to grow as artists and made an album that deserved to be heard. It's a shame that the general public of 1993 wasn't mature enough to like both Poison and Nirvana and felt they had to abandon one and embrace another. But for a few hours within a hall, several thousand fans didn't care if Poison was cool or not.
The actual taping of the show is superb. Shot in mostly color, with some black and white footage, "documentary style," the show is professionally shot and looks and sounds great. Charismatic frontman Brett Michaels has the audience by the palm of his hand, and along with the rest of the band, gives 100 percent.
In conclusion, I would recommend this DVD for fans of the "Native Tongue" album and the more die-hard fans that are familiar with the lesser known material. Casual fans may be disappointed with the lack of big hits, although there are still enough big hits, like "Every Rose Has its Thrown" and "Something to Believe in" to please, although purists still may be put off by Kotzen's interpretations.

In the lineage of "Stomp", "Blue Man Group" and "Blast", this group of talented violinists, guitarist, percussionists, and bassist are breaking new ground with the use of the violin. The music is stunning, and their personalities are enchanting. It is really wonderful to see excellent musicians having a great time making music. I use this as a teaching tool for my elementary music classes, and the students love it!!!! The guitarist is phenomenal and the selection of music is perfect. Own this, you won't be sorry!

Bjork: Vespertine - Live at Royal Opera House (2001) Review

Bjork: Vespertine - Live at Royal Opera House (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an amazing DVD highlighting perhaps the best live performance of Bjork's career thus far. The concert was recorded after Vespertine, so it contains her newest, deepest, and most heartfelt songs, including one of her best b-sides, 'Generous Palmstroke'.
If you have your dvd player connected to your audio system, just pop the dvd in without video, and enjoy the spellbinding music of Bjork any time you feel like being enveloped with a sweet emotional soundscape.
The 5.1 surround sound will bring out the many individual contributions, including electronic sound masters Matmos, the Il Novecentro Orchestra, the Inuit Choir, Zeena Parkins on harp, and of course the amazing vocal exaltations of Bjork.
If you think it's expensive, remember that you will be able to watch and listen to this Bjork concert any time you feel like, for less than the cost of one concert ticket.
The song selection seems so right and it flows perfectly, and there are plenty of highlights. Many songs sound better than the original album versions because she has had time to practice and tweak them to bring out their best. The fact that it's live, brings out more raw emotion, and it's amazing how dynamic her performance is, and how she hits everything just right.
Listening to her originals in comparison, you'll see that her music is not just a studio product, it's a pure expression of emotions and experiences that exist in her that are freed when she sings. If that's not enough, you get to watch Matmos create their unique sounds and beats through shuffling cards, moving a hyper-sensitive mic over material, trudging through snow, manipulating motion detecting sound shifters, and more.
I mostly love hip-hop and electronic music, but this concert DVD made me a true fan of Bjork. This is my first review because this is the only product I've bought so far at Amazon.com that I felt strongly enough about and has not received it's fair share of recommendations.
The high replay value will make this DVD a valuable addition to your collection. You will not be dissappointed!
Though the video quality is not on par with most Bjork videos, the audio alone earns this 5 out of 5 stars.
If you liked my first review ever, please indicate so, thanks!!

The Wall: Live in Berlin (Limited Edition Book and Video Box Set) Review

The Wall: Live in Berlin (Limited Edition Book and Video Box Set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My expectations were rather muted going into this. Primarily due to the "Celebrity" cast. I also had some real concerns over sound quality since it was recorded almost 15 years ago. The sound however is flat out amazing though. Although my issues with the Celebrity cast did not disappear, the quality of the sound and enormity of the production itself made the cast of characters seem less important. The list of those performers seems really stale today, but at the time of the show, they were all "A" list. I think some complaints I've read hold little merit or were the product of lack of understanding of the original source material. Someone said the scorpions attire was in bad taste for such an event. Well folks, that was on purpose! They were the "Surrogate" band which was supposed to be representative of all of the excess in rock and roll that has at one time or another caused many of us to lose sight of the music.
Although, I've never been a Sinead O'conner fan, I thought she was a perfectly appropriate representation of the child in Pink. Her vocals were also very moving. Again, I'm not a Brian Adams fan, but his gritty voice was an excellent fit for "Young Lust". And, no he wasn't really playing guitar, or at least he wasn't wired for sound. He, like the scorpions were there simply to provide vocals and window dressing. The music was thankfully performed strictly by Roger's amazing band. Joni Mitchell's performance was flat out creepy (in a good way)perfect for "Goodbye Blue Sky". Cindi lauper was nothing but annoying. Van morrison (who I love), seemed painfully out of place in this production. I ached for the return of David Gilmour's silky voice during Van's performance of "Comfortably Numb"

My biggest issue with the DVD was the camera angles and distances used for the bulk of the show. The show was so enormous that I think the best overall perspective would have been maybe a hundred and fifty feet or so from the stage. This view was curiously entirely absent. Everything was shot either up close (Like most concert footage), or so far away that the perfomers were merely a speck in the camera lense. These longs distance shots were used primarily between songs though and really did give the viewer an idea of just how huge the show was. In fact I would say the production was probably 4 to 5 times the size of Pink Floyds original prodution. All of the tight camera shots made me feel too much like I was watching a concert video rather than experiencing the show. Another interesting perspective was the footage shot behind the wall after the band had been completely closed off from the audience. It really made me appreciate how weird that must have been for Both Pink Floyd in the original performance and for Roger's band in this version. I mean here you are playing your heart out and you can't even see your audience, and you know they can't see you either. I would liked to have seen a little more of the audience perspective during this part of the show.
And to those Floyd fans who don't think the wall should be done without the original band, I do sympathize. But the fact is, they were asked to perform, and declined. Understandably, the bad blood between the Waters & Floyd camps was too much to overcome under such short notice, even for such a meaningful event and cause. But, the bottom line is that "The Wall" is Roger's brain child. You can count both the musical & lyrical credits of other band members for the double album on one hand. The wall is the least musical of the Floyd creations due to the lack of input of those other band members. But in pure lyrical and conceptual terms, I still feel it is once of the most brilliant and important works of my generation. I still hold out hope that some day, all of the members including Roger will be able to put their egos and bitterness aside and re-unite to produce new music and tour. Until that day however, I feel very fortunate to re-live the wall experience in this powerful incarnation.

Sade - Live Concert Home Video (1993)
Average Reviews:

Recently Sade ended their seven-year hiatus with the fine year 2000 LOVER'S ROCK album, which is musically so-close-yet-so-far from their 1984-1993 recordings. SADE LIVE (recorded in San Diego, October 1993) closes the book on the first decade of their/her musical career, presenting live versions of eighteen songs culled from the first four albums. Obviously this is a must-have for fans, but anybody who wants to hear these memorable songs again periodically should be happy with either this collection and/or the simultaneously-issued videoclip compilation (LIFE PROMISE PRIDE LOVE).
All of the hits are here, plus a few choice album tracks. The remastered 5.1 sound is excellent on this DVD release, capturing their live sound with clarity and fullness. The DVD has a few minor extras besides the surround sound, such as chapter access, a discography, a brief biography (basically a press release for LOVER'S ROCK), and offering the option to display lyrics karaoke-style on the screen in several languages.
For the most part, the group sticks closely to the original studio versions in these performances, although occasionally the group's subtle jazz touches become more overt (particularly on SMOOTH OPERATOR). Mostly though, vocalist Sade Adu is in the forefront, singing with a quiet fire and at times physically moving within the flow of the music. Never demonstrative either vocally or in her stage mannerisms, she nonetheless is a captivating presence both to hear and to look at, and her voice is in top form throughout this concert.

Prince- Rave un2 The Year 2000 (1999)
Average Reviews:

Prince's "Rave un2 the year 2000" is something of a surprise for many. On the eve of the millenial new year, Prince decided that a new year's eve concert as a pay-per-view event was a good idea. Many didn't think so. At first it was named after that year's lackluster album "Rave un2 the joy fantastic" which didn't show Prince's full musical genius to a cynical public who thought him to be a product of the 80's (how wrong they are) and to make matters worse, the concert was marketed as the last concert to ever feature a live performance of the song "1999" !. All that aside, one thing is proven after watching this concert, Prince was, is and always will be a musical force to be reckoned with. From his truly individual musical style, to his unparalled ability in instrumentation (anything from guitar, keyboards, drums to even Harp!), this man was created for music and in this concert it shows. From the opening moments with a blazing guitar solo on "Let's go crazy" to a truly rocking version of "She's always in my hair" to a blues medley that is nothing short of amazing to even a funky version of "Higher" to numerous other gems, this is what all concerts should be: raw, adrenalin-rushing music performed by a man whose eneregy and love for what he does shows in every single minute of this concert and supported by a band that couldn't be any tighter (just wait for Maceo Parker's entrance !). Directed with pure energey and featuring moments of musicianship that would make even the harshest critic acknowledge the undeniable, this is Prince at his best, pure and simple.

This 1973 concert film directed by D.A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop, Jimi Plays Monterey, Depeche Mode 101, etc.) documenting the final show of Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) & the Spiders from Mars (Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, & Mick "Woody" Woodmansey)provides a rare glimpse into Bowie's glam rock period. It is a loud & flashy assault on the senses that is experienced through both "sound" & "vision". Film footage mostly consists of the performance, but also included are back stage scenes of Bowie changing from one costume to another.

Leonard Maltin dismisses this film as "practically unwatchable and unlistenable" which would only be true for people who either dislike Bowie or the style of music. Yes, the music is sometimes loud, the focus is blurry here & there, and the strobe lights go crazy, but this is a David Bowie rock concert from the 1970s, isnt that appropriate? Anyone who is interested in either David Bowie or the glam rock era of the 1970s will find this film essential. For one, it is the only film document of David Bowie's Ziggy/glam phase and for another it is the "last concert" with "the Spiders" including Mick Ronson, who was a part of Bowie's band since the 1969 album "Space Oddity" up until '73's "Pin Ups". Bowie would, by 1974, have a new back up band, as well as a new look. This film deserves preservation on DVD as the historical document that it is.

This is the first time I'd ever seen a Alice Cooper concert. Had no idea that it was a full blown stage show, not just a music concert. I have thoroughly enjoyed this DVD at least five times and will watch it again when time prevails.
I would like to point out that the production of this video is excellent. The video portion gives you two angles, but that is not what sells me on this DVD, it's the quality, just great! The audio portion is well done also. It gives you the feeling of being in the front row. Put this DVD to a big screen tv and a good sound system, and you are there!
I just attended an Alice Cooper concert in Cincinnati last night. It was pretty much the same as what is on the Brutally Live DVD with a few exceptions. A few of his newer songs off of the Dragontown disc had been added in place of some others.
I must say that I think that the Brutally Live DVD is better than the live show I saw. Don't get me wrong, the man and his band put on a hell of a performance, but the sound in the theater was not as good as what I get from the DVD.
In summary, if you get a chance to see Alice live, do it by all means. Then buy this DVD to enjoy when you can't see him live. In either case it's entertainment money well spent.

Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare Review

Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare

This DVD is a fantastic sample of an often dissed rocker - Alice Cooper, who Bob Dylan has said is a greatly underappreciated song writer. I saw this tour in Chicago - Suzi Quattro opened - and the DVD's performance night has Alice perhaps a little more the worse for wear. Nevertheless this DVD shows a great performer backed by a fabulous band (who, I believe, also played on "Rock n Roll Animal"). Alice's red jump suit and saber, the monsters, the colors and lights are Alice during his lengthy prime; when he lets out "welcome to my breakdown - I hope I didn't scare you" with his trademark leer shivers run down my spine.
Alice's greatness, to me, rests on his sublimely original image, his great hard rocking, his appealing melodies and the sympathy and sensitivity that he projects amid an often nightmare world. This is all amply demonstrated on this DVD. For my generation, raised on the British Invasion followed by California and New York psychedelics, Alice represents the last great, truly original rock. Much fine music has followed, but these were the Founding Fathers.

VH1 Divas Live (1998) Review

VH1 Divas Live (1998)

VH1 had decided to put together a benefit concert that was to help raise the money for the Save The Music Foundation. In 1998, they had their first charity concert entitled, "VH1 Divas Live '98". They have chosen five female solo acts to perform in this concert. Those five women are: Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Aretha Franklin, Shania Twain, & Mariah Carey. Carole King was also invited to this concert, but only as a guest diva. These five women helped redefine the meaning of listening to music and it is all defined right here.
Mariah Carey is the first two perform. She comes out, wearing a beautiful white sparkling gown, and performs, "My All". Just as the song nears the end, the song goes into a dance remix, where Mariah closes out the song. After "My All", Mariah then sings, "Make it Happen", a song that she had written about how she made it to where she is now.
Gloria Estefan then takes the stage, wearing a longer silver gown. Gloria sings "Heaven's What I Feel", the first single off her 1998 dance-fused album, "Gloria". After "Heaven's What I Feel", Gloria then sings, "Turn The Beat Around". After those two brilliant songs, Gloria performs an awesome Megamix Medley. The medley consists of, "Dr. Beat", "Conga", "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You", "1-2-3", & "Get On Your Feet".
Shania Twain then takes the stage, wearing a black sparkling half-top and black pants. First, Shania sings, "Man! I Feel Like A Woman". After that, she sits on a stool and, while playing an acoustic guitar, sings, "You're Still The One".
Aretha Franklin then takes the stage to perform, wearing a black party gown. Only, Aretha is not alone. Mariah Carey is with her. The two perform Aretha's hit song, "Chain Of Fools" and they sing it brilliantly.
Celine Dion comes out to the stage, wearing a black suit and black coat. She is joined by Carole King, where they sing Celine Dion's song, "The Reason". Carole King leaves the stage after, "The Reason", where Celine performs, "River Deep, Mountain High", followed by, "My Heart Will Go On".
A piano is wheeled out. Playing the piano is Carole King. Leaning on the side of the piano is Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, & Shania Twain. The three sing, "You've Got A Friend". Carole not only plays the piano, but sings with Celine, Gloria, & Shania. For the finale, Celine, Gloria, Aretha, Shania, Mariah, & Carole take center stage to perform, "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman" and "Testimony".
These women gave one hell of a concert, proving that they are Divas. I just hope that for the divas of 2005, they'll choose: Madonna, Roberta Flack, Toni Braxton, Taylor Dayne, Melissa Etheridge, & Annie Lennox. The whole selist for VH1 Divas Live '98 and the Divas of '98 line-up are listed below:

Celine Dion - All the Way... A Decade of Song and Video (2001)

"Oh My God!" I couldn't stop watching this DVD once I got it. Celine is so spectacular, and this DVD sure does show it! I love all the old videos, "new" videos, and live performances! Who says teenage guys can't LOVE Celine?
Here's my run-down:
1. Program start: This is just a short "into" clip. About 30 seconds long. Short and sweet.
2. The Power of Love (Music Video):
I may not be "your lady," but I bet after seeing this video, and hearing this song, every guy wants to be Celine's "man." It's so amazing. She hits the high notes perfectly.
3. If You Asked Me To (Music Video):
This may be an old vid, but it's so great! Celine looks so beautiful, and the video made me feel as if I were in a dream. Great job!
4. Misled (Music Video):
Okay, maybe the video was kid of..."so, so." The song has kind of like a "funky" beat to it. Not what we're used to from Celine. But it's something different, and we don't here it all the time. And if it was a single, then it's gotta be good, right? Nice job.
5. Beauty and the Beast (duet with Terry Bradford) [LIVE]:
If it's a Disney song, then ya know it's great! Trust me, this is the song you want to be stuck in your head all day. It's live and from the "Falling Into You" concert, in Memphis. Not bad Celine, not bad at all.
6. Because You Loved Me [LIVE]:
No, it's not the music video. But it's just as good, (maybe even a little better). I LOVE this song. It's so pure. Celine... you know what we want. Thanks.
7. It's All Coming Back To Me Now [Single Version] (Music Video):
Now here's a side of Celine we don't see often. WOW! This video blew me away. So amazing! I loved it from the start till the end. Uh... what can ya say? It's G-R-E-A-T!
8. Love Can Move Mountains (Music Video):
I know everyone loves this song! It just makes you want to get up and dance, and just have a good time. And when you look beyond the fun, it has an outstanding message! Great song, fun video, positive message... what more can you ask for?
9. To Love You More (feat. Taro Hakase) [LIVE]:
A hit not only in Japan, but all over the world! Celine knows what she's doing! This song is amazing, and even features a very special guest! This is a wonderful performance!
10. My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme from Titanic) (Music Video):
Okay! Now you cannot get any bigger than Titanic! Oh, yes you can, just have a hit show in Las Vegas! This video is AMAZING! Celine is sooo beautiful in her dress, and I know everyone's head this song, and I know everyone LOVES it! No matter you are!
11. I'm Your Angel (duet with R. Kelly) (Music Video):
WOW! This is such a pure song, and is just so inspirational! Celine, doing her best as always, and a side of R. Kelly we hardly ever see. Just so heavenly!
12. That's the Way It Is (Music Video):
Seems almost impossible! Celine is so down-to-earth in this video. It's like she's one of us! We all love her, and we'll love her even more after this! I promise!
13. If Walls Could Talk (Music Video):
This is one of my most favorite video of ALL TIME! How can you pass this by! I cried when I saw this video! The setting is so calm and peaceful, Celine looks gorgeous, and song is so soothing! Bravo Celine, bravo!
14. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (From the "All The Way... A Decade of Song" CBS-TV Special) [LIVE]:
This is one of the songs that you'll wish you could only do, but Celine is the only one who can do it. Such a dreamy song. It just fades you away, and lets you know that your tribulations are for just a day. You'll just fade into this lovely balled.
15. All the Way (duet with Frank Sinatra) [LIVE]:
Ahhh... wonderful. A love song that can't get any better. And only Celine can sing it like Frank Sinatra. This is one of the BEST songs of all time... All the way.
16. Then You Look at Me (Music Video):
I love it! Celine performs this song, in a way that no other could, or can ever reach! This video is so cool! It has a mystery about it, the kind that makes me get chills every time I see it! Oh gosh! Just spectacular!
17. I Want You to Need Me (Music Video):
This is such a beautiful music video! Is that beach in there real? It looks gorgeous, and... If only I could have been there with Celine. I just adore this video!
18. Live For The One I Love (Music Video):
This video is sort of like in a dream, that you never want to wake up from. It just absolutely takes you away to a land where everything may just be perfect. This video... better than a dream.
BONUS VIDEO: It's All Coming Back to Me Now (stereo mix - long version) (Music Video):
Same review as #7, only longer, with added scene.
Over all, this DVD is as PERFECT as it get! Surly a prize you won't regret winning.

Yes - Symphonic Live (2002) Review

Yes - Symphonic Live (2002)

On November 21st and 22nd 2001 Yes visited the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam and gave 2 concerts ... the 2nd one ... was filmed and is now available on video and DVD. ... the DVD version [has] a beautiful mix of band and orchestra ... The DTS sound gives it all an extra dimension .
The concert starts with an overture by the orchestra, that is not visible at that moment. The background is a Roger Dean-like landscape.
After the intro the band starts with the epic Close to the Edge and, immediately, you sense the asset the orchestra is for this song. It brought tears in my eyes from emotion to see young orchestra members with such dedication to music that was written before they were even born. Also on screen there appear icons for animation in the background and there are multiple camera-angles in this song possible.
Next is Long Distance Runaround from the Fragile album with a beautiful orchestra opening that is really an asset to the song.
From the new album Magnification they played Don't go first. I think it's not their most powerful track of the album and it surprised me the song did it live very well.
In the Presence Off, also from their latest album, are, together with Dreamtime, my favourites. In arrangement and length it's a 2001 Yes semi-epic.
Then, oh my God, finally, after all these years, Gates of Delirium is been introduced. Together with C.T.T.E this is the mother of all Yes epics. Tom Brislin really showed his craftsmanship in the "war" part of the song. This is a perfect song to play with an orchestra and you can hear that they do a perfect job in the changeover from the "war" part to the "peace" part of the song .Soon oh Soon let's the song end in a sea of tranquillity. Multi-camera angles and animations of war are also visible during this song.
After this epic we are attended by maestro Steve Howe and he entertains us with his guitar virtuoso by playing two songs of his solo albums.
Another golden oldie is Starship Trooper from the Yesalbum. During this song the orchestra has leave of absence and immediately you get an "unplugged" feeling when they are not there. The harmonies are perfect in this song and the only drawback is the shifting from the 1st layer to the second layer on the DVD and the lack of the Wakeman solo on his moog during the end of the song because Brislin played it a little thin in my opinion.
Anderson states that the day before they played the next song for the first time live and he introduces the title track of their last album; Magnification. One of the highlights of their album and played perfectly on stage.
It's back to 1972 with And You And I. Played live a zillion times but never lost it's charisma. In the multi-camera angle you can see animation with 2 robots.
If you haven't seen this, you ain't seen nothing yet ; Ritual, from the "Tales" album is one of the four tracks of this double album and one of two, for me, accessible tracks. The drum part in the middle with Anderson, Squire, Brislin and White makes it an attraction of the first order. What an energy pours out of that song!
From the time of it's first release on the Yesalbum "I,ve Seen All Good People"has always been a great rock song that survived decades of rock history. So get up and boogie: as Anderson says in the intro to the audience.
... with all the cameras rolling, Steve had to make concessions and "Owner" was played before the last song from this evening; Roundabout from the Fragile album. During this song the stage is filled with all the members of the orchestra waving and dancing on the music and expressing their joy of being part of performing in timeless music by a timeless band.
Yes, what a wonderful, magical evening it was. Every bit of it captured on a perfect DVD.
