(More customer reviews)SIGN O' THE TIMES was an excellent "concert movie"... but, as we all know, alot of it was re-shot and re-filmed with prince lip synching. THIS, however, was NOT a lip synched concert (to the idiot who said otherwise) ... as for guitar not plugged in? You can tell whoever wrote that review knows little about live performances... (...) ... it's called a wireless system... it's been around for YEARS and yes, Prince was one of the first to use it extensively.
At any rate, back to this review: although Prince has a habit of dragging songs on and on, we all KNOW it's a remnant of his love of all thins Funk where George Clinton would have these marathon jam grooves... in fact, it's very much like PHISH or Grateful Dead in that respect. But NO ONE else plays, SINGS, and DANCES at the same time... not then and certainly not now... This video stands the test of time, as do the songs.
Admittedly alittle self-indulgent, but hey... he was A-list #1 at the time. Not as good a show as the PARADE paris shows (bootleg) or the German TV release of his LOVESEXY show (which should have gotten an official release), but still better than anything put out then ... and even now.

Prince - Diamonds and Pearls (1992) Review

(More customer reviews)For the first time Prince and the N.P.G.'s Diamond and Pearls Video Collection is available on DVD. The collection was a treasured favorite when it was available on VHS.
First things first, I must address the picture and sound quality. It doesn't appear that the set was re-mastered--the picture or the sound. Despite this, it looks and sounds good--just not what you would expect from a DVD. Sound and picture wise it's not much different than my VHS version.
If it's been awhile since you have seen this collection let me refresh your memory. It includes the music videos from Prince's album Diamond and Pearls album. Videos included are "Gett Off," "Cream," "Diamonds and Pearls," "Call The Law," "Willing and Able," "Insatiable," "Strollin'," and "Money Don't Matter 2 Night."
Live concert footage featured on the set includes "Thunder," "Dr. Feelgood," "Jughead," and "Live 4 Love."
The running time of the set is 58 minutes. It's pretty much the same as the VHS version--except on DVD. There is nothing new, but its great that Prince fans can finally own this set on the most current format available.

Prince- Rave un2 The Year 2000 (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)Prince's "Rave un2 the year 2000" is something of a surprise for many. On the eve of the millenial new year, Prince decided that a new year's eve concert as a pay-per-view event was a good idea. Many didn't think so. At first it was named after that year's lackluster album "Rave un2 the joy fantastic" which didn't show Prince's full musical genius to a cynical public who thought him to be a product of the 80's (how wrong they are) and to make matters worse, the concert was marketed as the last concert to ever feature a live performance of the song "1999" !. All that aside, one thing is proven after watching this concert, Prince was, is and always will be a musical force to be reckoned with. From his truly individual musical style, to his unparalled ability in instrumentation (anything from guitar, keyboards, drums to even Harp!), this man was created for music and in this concert it shows. From the opening moments with a blazing guitar solo on "Let's go crazy" to a truly rocking version of "She's always in my hair" to a blues medley that is nothing short of amazing to even a funky version of "Higher" to numerous other gems, this is what all concerts should be: raw, adrenalin-rushing music performed by a man whose eneregy and love for what he does shows in every single minute of this concert and supported by a band that couldn't be any tighter (just wait for Maceo Parker's entrance !). Directed with pure energey and featuring moments of musicianship that would make even the harshest critic acknowledge the undeniable, this is Prince at his best, pure and simple.

Lovesexy Review

(More customer reviews)I hated "Lovesexy" when it first came out in the spring of 1988. Following the tremendous "Sign O the Times," I thought "Lovesexy" was a big disappointment and was too quirky for my taste. But, as a stand-alone album, this CD is a fine effort that has its strokes of brilliance. Yes, there's the Top Ten "Alphabet St.," but my singles of choice are the severely underrated "Glam Slam" and the beautiful yet underrated "I Wish U Heaven." Other funked-up gems are the title track and "Dance On." Prince never releases the album you'd expect him to make. He's always two steps ahead of the game and continues to challenge us with interesting material. Again, I didn't care for "Lovesexy" when it came out, but over the years it grew on me and it's now become one of my favorite Prince albums.

Dirty Mind Review

(More customer reviews)"Dirty Mind" sets the tone for the rest of Prince's unparalleled career. In fact, most people think it's his first album. It might as well have been because, despite his impressive first 2 LP's (For You and Prince), he really got recognized for the image he crafted through his music. But it's the great music that makes this album endure, for it created the "Prince sound."
The minimalist approach to this LP is its hallmark. Stripped of all pretensions and indulgences,and centered around funk guitar and synths, it is one of the tightest -- and raunchiest -- Prince LP's. What really makes this LP are 4 all-time classic Prince songs: the title track, the outstanding "When You Were Mine," "Do It All Night," and "Uptown." They are the heart and soul of a great LP. Unfortunately, radio wasn't as liberal as it is now, but I'd like to think this LP contributed to more adventurous music in all genres. If not for this album, would Madonna, 2 Live Crew, Nine Inch Nails, etc. even gotten radio play? Maybe not.
This is an essential 80's record, an essential Prince record, and an undisputed classic. Buy it.

On the title track, which begans with a funky beat, he poses such questions as "I can't believe all the things people say/controversy/Am I black or white/am I straight or gay?" "Do I believe in God, or do I believe in me?" Obviously with the release of Dirty Mind, lots of critics and people were really wondering about him and had a few things to say. Well, this is Prince's take on that.
His reciting the Lord's Prayer and his provocative utopian view is also included in the title track, which is the most potent and important track on this album: "People call me rude/I wish we all were nude/I wish there was no black or white/I wish there were no rules." Given the traditional U.S. view of sex which has refused to get out of its Puritan shadow and covert racism, those lines are not to be laughed off lightly. It makes me think, "Well, sure, why not?"
The irresistible "Sexuality", a political disco number of the principles of the new breed leaders: in their regime, one needs no money, clothes, anti-segregation anti-racism, anti-tourists, given that tourists are pocket-camera-visioned idiots, "a bunch of double-drags who tell their kids that loving is bad." He furthers his argument that "no child is bad from the beginning, they only imitate their atmosphere."
"Do Me Baby" is probably one of the damn, hottest and sexiest songs he has ever written. After the singing, he goes into a monologue where he is making love to a woman while the music plays. One biographer described the song as Prince making love on hot dripping wax--wax as in what LPs are made of. And people wonder why the single version clocks in at 3:55?
"Private Joy" is a boppable song with the same organ synthesizer, hand claps, and bass.
The brief adrenalized organ synth dance of "Ronnie Talk To Russia" has a direct and simple message: "Ronnie talk to Russia before it's too late/Before they blow up my world." It has fiery guitar, machine-gun firing, and at the end, the bomb, which segues into the funky "Let's Work".
"Annie Christian", a.k.a. anti-Christ, is a rap song about the Atlanta child murders, shootings of John Lennon, Ronald Reagan, and the ABSCAM scandal. The song is not as effective as political songs done by other groups or artists. He did better on "Ronnie Talk To Russia" and his angry protest song "Partyup" on Dirty Mind. Still, the idea of embodying evil in one entity is a good one.
And need I detail what fun "Jack U Off" is about? I don't? I didn't think so.
Controversy further strengthens the political foundation established in "Partyup" and sets the stage for the next chapter, both a year later, or seventeen years later: namely, 1999.

One Nite Alone Live Review

(More customer reviews)Let me make this much clear at the outset: I was a Prince fan until about 1992 or so. After that the music just feel off for me and I've been waiting for Prince to get it together. I retained a severe respect for his genius and range, but had given up all hope for an album that I would actually be able to like, let alone spend money on.
Well, after album and album of navel-gazing production values, mission statements and songs with no almost bite whatsoever, Prince hit me fully over the head and knocked me out with his latest release, the 3-cd box set "One Nite Alove...Live!". The mission of the record was to show "real music by real musicians", which he attempted to sell via the abominable "Rainbow Children" record, but nailed here in capturing some of the stuff live. The 1st CD is made up of stuff that most people couldn't name because they didn't buy any of his last 4 or 5 records, but the second and third CDs are mostly old stuff revamped with a new, jazzier band, and man, do they smoke. The slow grooves REALLY grind to a funky, smoldering near-halt and the party stuff actually makes you want to dance like the man's in your living room. Prince finally got the philosophy, the tunes and the mission all on the same page and this box set really soars.
The one thing I have to point out here that this box gives us is a great insight into Prince as guitar player. Sure, we all know he plays guitar, but live? He really kills it. Problem is, if you don't see him live you don't appreciate how incredibly gifted he is on this instrument. He really is a guitar god, and this set proves it. For me, there's Jimi, then Frank Zappa, then Prince. Always has been, but now I have this box as uncontestable evidence. The man's range is almost frightening.
For fans, but also for people who used to be fans.

(More customer reviews)As usual PRINCE is great in concert, and here is the DVD to prove it. Whether or not you were onboard with his last CD THE RAINBOW CHILDREN, there's plenty here to keep fans interested. It's gorgeously filmed, and very funky. Throw in Sheila E on percussion and Eric Leeds on horns, and you have a reason to dress in purple paisley once again. Straight up this is just a live performance with no frills. But interestingly enough it's priced low enough to make it more affordable than seing Prince live. He seems laid back and happy to be on stage, and he works his magic on every track from "Pop Life" to a blistering rendition of Led Zeplin's "Whole Lotta Love". One interesting thing I noticed was that the sound varied a little. As he moves around the stage the vocals seem to get louder or softer. It may not bug you since this is pretty much a natural thing live, but audio purists may wonder why they didn't adjust the levels to keep it all uniform for home viewing.

Purple Rain (Two-Disc Special Edition) (1984) Review

The movie is not primarily about a young musician who"struggles to gain acceptance for his own brand of ... rock music". Instead, the movie is about a man who has acquired his not only some of his father's musical interest and talent, but also his father's emotional instability and occasional abusiveness towards others, especially women. Maltin is correct that Prince's character is sexist and unappealing, but that's crucial to the movie. By playing his character as emotionally unstable, insensitive, and occasionally cruel, Prince de-glamourizes the cool, rebellious rock star image, showing that fame and talent are neither a guaranteed road to happiness nor a good excuse for being cruel to your girlfriend.This movie, rather than being a "soppy story" wrapped around concert footage, is instead genuinely literary. The concert footage is not an excuse for a movie; some of the concert footage is integral to the story. The title song, "Purple Rain", is used very effectively in the movie as a point of conflict between Prince and two of his female bandmates.
This movie, like Quadrophenia, would make a good subject for an English literature class targeted towards aimlessly rebellious under-achievers (rather than the 4.0 GPA high school students that most English literature classes are designed for).
