The problem with this box set is that it is neither a greatest hits collection nor a rarities one. The first edition was released in 1989 as a sort of sampler for the upcoming Rykodisc reissues. Ryko probably chose not to include the best tracks to avoid hurting the sales of the individual albums, when they came out. Yet, at a time when the CD format was booming and the RCA albums had been long out of print, fans were hungry for Bowie's 70's material on CD. So this set was welcomed at the time even though it was a seemingly random selection of tracks with a few rarities thrown in for good measure. These rarities would not reappear as bonus tracks on the regular releases, so they were the very reason for buying and keeping this set.
Now that the original albums have been reissued to death, this box set is released again. It includes a fourth CD and adds a few more rarities to make it desirable even to those who had bought the original edition. But the "mixed bag" concept is still there and it is totally pointless, now. I'm not complaining about the rarities, but they should have gone for an entirely different approach instead of just releasing an expanded edition of the old box. So casual fans beware: this is by no means a "definitive" Bowie compilation. Apart from the rarities, tracks seem to have been chosen by luck of the draw.

Not only do I consider OUTSIDE Bowie's best album since 1981's SCARY MONSTERS, OUTSIDE is my current favorite Bowie album. I recommended it without hesitation to industrial rock fans, Enophiles, and anyone who appreciates dark, adventurous sounds. However, if you already own the original pressing, there's no need to buy this album a second time. The remastering offers no improvement over the original edition's superb sonics. As other reviewers have noted, the reproduction of the digital booklet art and Bowie's cover painting are markedly inferior to the original digipak. The bonus track is a throwaway. I would have preferred to see OUTSIDE reissued in a deluxe edition with a disc of live material from the OUTSIDE tour, which included blistering versions of "Look Back in Anger" and "Diamond Dogs," as well as electronic arrangements of vintage songs such as "Andy Warhol" and "The Man Who Sold the World."

Serious Moonlight (1983) Review

Serious Moonlight (1983)
Average Reviews:

My first exposure to Bowie was seeing him on MTV in the "Let's Dance" video back in 1983. While I've since acquired just about everything he's ever recorded, and have no trouble identifying the strongest part of his career as coming to an end around 1980, I still have a fondness for the 1983 incarnation of Mr. Jones. I also - truth be told - love horn-laden, synth-heavy, bright rearrangements of much of the older material showcased on the Serious Moonlight tour, like "Star", "Station to Station", "Scary Monsters", etc.
I enjoyed this video back on VHS, and it has transitioned as well as can be excepted to DVD. I am still annoyed at a few of the artistic choices -- especially truncating the beginning of "Station to Station", as well as omitting tour staples like "Modern Love" and "Star", from the video record -- but at 20 songs, I can't accuse the producers of being skimpy. It serves well as a record of an exciting, commercially successful tour -- and one that isn't as artistically bankrupt as critics claim.
The video quality is still somewhat grainy, but the sound is excellent.
Getting the "Ricochet" documentary as a bonus is a real treat.
Finally, for a hidden bonus: I almost bought the revised SOUND & VISION box set back in 2003 just to get the live b-side version of "Modern Love" -- a rarity from the days of vinyl that had previously not made it to CD. I'm glad I didn't, because it's actually hidden away on this DVD, as the soundtrack for the "Gallery" feature!

This is their first (of hopefully many) taped concerts (yay!!!..new 2 disc 2007 European tour DVD coming on 10/2/07), this one, performed in Oberhausen, Germany. If you are a TH fan you'll love it and if you're new to TH you're gonna get hooked. These dudes rock better than anyone has been rocking America in years and JEEZ they're only teens! If you like to try new things then try this and become a Tokio Hotel fan. Entirely in German. My DVD is PAL standard - non playable on US machines (unless you're like me) so unless you've got a machine that can play European recordings make sure the version you buy is NTSC format. C'mon Universal....bring the boys to the US AND make their stuff more available. Thanks to Amazon UK I managed to get this copy mailed from Moscow, Russia to Honolulu, Hawaii (might be my fault too for having to get it as soon as it was released.) The comments that the other reviewer made about subtitles refer strictly to comments or announcements that Bill made to the crowd during the concert. The special feature section is also subtitled. None of the singing is subtitled.

Reality Review

2002's "Heathen" was the beacon on the mountain for Bowie fans who hoped the eloquent and moving minimalism of 1999's "Hours" was not just an aberration on the way to another noisily ambitious effort such as "Outside." Yet even for all "Heathen" did to suggest that Bowie had finally swept his Tin Machine under the rug for good, disonant techno freak-outs like "Took A Trip on a Gemini Spaceship" anticipated the tight rope Bowie walks on "Reality," a record so ambitious in production and sound as to be constantly on the verge of explosion. While "Hours" played like a dressed-up stepchild of "Hunky Dory," "Reality" picks up where "Scary Monsters" left off. As on that 80s masterpiece, each song on Reality approaches but never crosses the boundary between melody and mania. The result is a gorgeously successful restraint and maturity; the kind of reservation of his powers that moments of even his most lauded works have lacked. No song on "Reality" illustrates this more aptly than the stunning and ethereal "Days," one of the most moving productions of Bowie's career. Similarly tender and understated compositions like "Fall Dog Bombs The Moon" or the darkly seductive and jazzy "Bring Me The Disco King" balance nicely with noisier and farther-reaching explosions of melody so radiant as to light the world on fire: "New Killer Star" with its subtle nod to the doo-wop hit "I Will Follow Him," his cover of the Modern Lovers' under-ground punk hit "Pablo Picasso," the bright "Looking For Water." By the time the title track finally comes around, Bowie's vocals sound appropriately drained and the sound itself seems closest to driving off the deep end of the album's steel composure. But such meticulous production might have seemed inhuman without at least this one less-structured and overblown track. There simply had to be a pressure valve and the title tracks happens to be it; but there is hardly a song on here whose melodies are not infectious. When songs like these get stuck in your head, you hope they never leave.

Aside from the fact that this tour recording captured Bowie at his finest "stage" of his career (with his best touring band by far), it also should serve as a blueprint for further re-releases from singers or bands of the era.
The re-mastering is extraoridnary and blows the old RCA vinly and even the Ryco reissue out of the water. Restoring the original running order of the songs is also a bonus as is the two tracks never before released......Dennis Davis was an extraordinary drummer and Adrian Belew was so far advanced for his time it's truly remarkable to listen to his playing now; he was proof that you didn't have to recycle blues riffs endlessly in order to be in the spotlight.
In short this is like a time capsule which allows you to go back in time to 1978 and listen to one of the worlds most influential artists at arguably his creative peak backed by one awesome and compelling band......all in state of the art digital sound circa 2005.
I can't say enough about this album. Simply the best.

The Best of Tina Turner - Celebrate - DTS (2000) Review

The Best of Tina Turner - Celebrate - DTS (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This concert was filmed in London in November 1999 to celebrate six decades of Tina Turner on planet earth. The DVD has been available in Europe since June and finally it will be available to American fans this November. The show is not the same as the one she's currently touring North America with. The concert starts with the 1966 classic River Deep, Mountain High. After this landmark song she sings the title track of her most recent album "24-7". The high tempo continuous with a great version of her 1989 smash hit "Steamy Windows". Although her recent European no. 1 hit and US Billboard Dance chart top 3 single "When the heartache is over" is not really suitable for a live version she gives it a try here. For the next song, the UK hit single "Whatever you need", she is joined by the London Gospel Choir. Two ballads, "Don't leave me this way" and her 1983 comeback hit "Let's stay together" are next before she is joined again by the London Gospel Choir for probably the best track of the DVD : a superb version of "Talk to my heart", also taken from her most recent album "Twenty four seven". Tina gives everything she's got in her rocking version of "Hold on I'm coming"(unavailable elsewhere!) and is than joined by Bryan Adams for 2 duets. Of course the 1985 smash hit "It's only love" and the recent duet "Without you". Although her studio version of "All the woman" on "Twenty four seven" sounds rather weak, the live version here is one of the most sizzling tracks I've ever heard. The concert closes with her two classics "Nutbush City Limits" and 1989's European number 1 "The Best". The dvd also includes birthday dedications from such artists as : Bob Geldof, Al Green, Dolly Parton, Annie Lennox, Cher, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Phil Spector, PP Arnold, Bono, Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin and Sting + interview with the lady herself. The European dvd also included bonus material : Promo videos for when the heartache is over and "whatever you need" ( Superb Video! ) + a biography and a photo gallery. The best Turner video available to date !

I am always constantly impressed with how David Bowie easily slips out of one form of music and into another. In a day and age when techo beats are popular but lame, and I spend hours cowering in my room stuck musically in the 70's, this album pops out and suddenly I am back in the 90's again. Bowie flirts heavily with a Trent Reznor-like sound, but with his amazing voice, this experimental album works very well. The best track is "I'm Afraid of Americans." It just starts off and builds to this LOUD chorus. This is a good album to get if you are like me, not really into the 90's sound, but still are able to appreciate genius when you hear it (although I will always love the 70's Bowie glam more).

Pleasure Principle (Reis) Review

Pleasure Principle (Reis)

It's amazing how much emotion Gary Numan was able to evoke with an album so dominated by electronic instruments. Numan produced a number of great albums in his heyday (I'm not a big fan of his recent, dark material), but the Pleasure Principle--with its Magritte take-off cover--has best withstood the test of time for me. Replicas comes close, but I think this is Gary at his best.
Cars became a hit here and in the UK, but the rest of the cuts are every bit as strong. And there's a sensitivity on display behind the andriod cool that makes this music far more than the sum of its parts. Couple that with an excellent rhythm section, great keyboard textures, and first-rate arrangements, and you have an album that never seems to wear out its welcome.
Gary Numan's voice can tend to become grating on some of his albums, but not this one.

Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture (1973) Review

Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture (1973)
Average Reviews:

This 1973 concert film directed by D.A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop, Jimi Plays Monterey, Depeche Mode 101, etc.) documenting the final show of Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) & the Spiders from Mars (Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, & Mick "Woody" Woodmansey)provides a rare glimpse into Bowie's glam rock period. It is a loud & flashy assault on the senses that is experienced through both "sound" & "vision". Film footage mostly consists of the performance, but also included are back stage scenes of Bowie changing from one costume to another.
Songs performed:
1) Hang on to yourself
2) Ziggy Stardust
3) Watch that man
4) Medley: Wild eyed boy from Freecloud/All the young dudes/Oh you pretty things
5) Moonage Daydream
6) Changes
7) Space Oddity
8) My death
9) Crack'd Actor
10) Time
11) Width of a circle
12) Let's spend the night together
13) Suffragette City
14) White light/white heat
15) Rock & Roll Suicide
Leonard Maltin dismisses this film as "practically unwatchable and unlistenable" which would only be true for people who either dislike Bowie or the style of music. Yes, the music is sometimes loud, the focus is blurry here & there, and the strobe lights go crazy, but this is a David Bowie rock concert from the 1970s, isnt that appropriate? Anyone who is interested in either David Bowie or the glam rock era of the 1970s will find this film essential. For one, it is the only film document of David Bowie's Ziggy/glam phase and for another it is the "last concert" with "the Spiders" including Mick Ronson, who was a part of Bowie's band since the 1969 album "Space Oddity" up until '73's "Pin Ups". Bowie would, by 1974, have a new back up band, as well as a new look. This film deserves preservation on DVD as the historical document that it is.

This is a Bowie DVD that is actually clear and of great quality. For those poor souls who bought the Glass Spider or Serious Moonlight DVD I'm sure you haven't noticed much difference from the VHS. This DVD is extra special because of the more recent videos that never made it to USA TV and the stunning clarity of the older material. Yes, LIFE ON MARS is supposed to look like that! We have all years represented here but we still have some of the more oscure stuff missing like DB's '80's soundtrack work with Pat Metheny or Raymond Briggs. Maybe those recordings are owned by someone else and will never see a real release. Now as far as Easter Eggs go...I won't say WHERE but I will say WHAT: full 20 minute Jazzin' For Blue Jean video promo, Russell Harty interview, MTV promo club version of Blue Jean (alternate video), Day In Day Out (extended dance mix video),Seven Years in Tibet (mandarin Version video), Survive (Live paris '99 and more to be discovered. Young Americans Review

After "Diamond Dogs", the world was thrown off balance again with Bowie's rumors of hanging out in a Philadelphia studio with fans sleeping at the stage door. It was the same city he recorded the "Diamond Dogs" tour - the `City of Brotherly Love'. Black/White Soul Love music from Bowie? No way. Yes way. Although it was a strong departure, "Young Americans" has become one of those Bowie albums that are so unique and distinct in its character that you either love it or hate it. It's all true soul funk with the magical backup of the late Luther Vandross's voice. "Young Americans" made it as a modest single, but it was the collaborative effort of "Fame" with John Lennon that is the song of choice here. There is nothing like it anywhere in the world. Bowie's rendering of "Across The Universe" is an uninspired tribute to Lennon and "Can You Hear Me" is bland. However, "Somebody Up There Like Me" is a true funky bass driven number that completely satisfies. At the very least, this album is consistent and Bowie proves he truly has some serious soul.

Station to Station Review

The mid-1970's were a stressful time for David Bowie. His marriage to the obnoxious Angela Bowie was disintegrating, he had become a top-notch coke freak, and was convinced that practitioners of black magic were out to get him. He had laid his Ziggy Stardust persona to rest, in favor of a white-boy soul man character, which was not as well-received as he had hoped. While his "Young Americans" album was a bold step in a new direction, it did not receive the kind of adoration that Bowie had become accustomed to. Somehow, while fighting with dictatorial manager Tony Defries, sorcerers, and the homosexual image he had created for himself, David managed to come up with an absolutely brilliant album that retains the disco-funk of "Americans", but pushes it into a whole new direction. The persona that dominates this album is that of the Thin White Duke, an aristocratic European fellow who likes to cruise around in limos, binged out on cocaine, his head swimming in fascist paranoid fantasies (someone once told me that "Station To Station"-era Bowie was one of the people Pink Floyd based "The Wall" on. I cannot verify this but it seems plausible). So self-absorbed was David during this era that he actually made his band play behind a backdrop during concerts, so that he could be the one and only center of the audience's attention. One look at the photos inside the CD booklet (David, looking like a famished hairdresser in sore need of a dental hygienist, scribbling kabbalistic desings on an asylum floor) will clue the listener in to Bowie's frame of mind at the time. The songs themselves are the antithesis of the shallow yet groovy preceding album; the hooks are there, but not as contrived sounding. The title track starts off slow and menacing, then builds to a disco crescendo that could take the Bee Gees on anyday. "Stay" is fast and funky, "Word On A Wing" is very heartfelt and seeminly religious, "Golden Years" (the closest thing to a hit here) is a doo-woppy dance tune that Dave supposedly wrote about Angela (who was also the inspiration behind the Rolling Stones' "Angie"). "TVC 15" seems to be the favorite of most, dealing as it does with a carnivorous television. And finally, "Wild Is The Wind", while not written by Bowie, has to be one of his most heart-felt performances. This album was the transition into a more experimental phase of Bowie's career, and I strongly recommend it.

Can't believe there are no reviews of this! Ok, Bowie in the 80's. People always just say it is throwaway music, I understand what they mean, but there is WAY more to it than that my friends. The 80's had some damn good stuff. Ok, back to Bowie. He starts off the decade with some radical albums, Lodgers, Scary Monsters are two great examples, and for those of you must have a "hit", check out the classic "Fashion" remember that one kids? Then the super success of Let's Dance, and the follow ups Never Let Me Down and Tonight, which I guess get the tag of "80's sounding" dating. Ok, this tour is THE 80's document of Bowie live in concert. YES, people can't get past the giant spider and theatrics of the shows, but this is about the music man! Some of the attempts of drama and skits and such I think are actually pretty cool, some falls flat, but again, THE MUSIC MAN!! Bowie's vocals are so damn good on this! The band is kick ass, period. The superb Carlos Alomar on guitar, and special guest (and childhood friend of Bowie) Peter Frampton! Frampton wails away on this tour, and his soloing is just excellent. Watch for a special vocal appearance by Peter on this on a older, more obscure Bowie Tune (Sons Silent Age). Carmine Rojas is fantastic on bass, and the drummer and keyboards hang right in there. SO, if you want to see some of Bowie's classic tunes, and his late 70's and early 80's stuff--along with the BEST versions of the 80's stuff, you need to check this stuff out! Hey, this is just because I care man, cheers, Jaderain

Abattoir Blues Tour Review

Abattoir Blues Tour

I usually don't start reviews like this...but I can't get over the price for Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds' The Abbatoir Blues Tour 2DVD/2CD set. For around 25 clams, you get quite a few selections from two Bad Seeds concerts in London, a video documentary, a short film on the recording of the double LP, a bunch of promotional videos, and a 2CD live set from the Seeds' 2004 tour...this is a ridiculously good deal.
Nick Cave opted not to tour the Abbatoir record to N. America, which is regrettable for two reasons:
1. Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus, along with The Boatman's Call, is Cave's best work to date.
2. Now that I see what audiences missed, I am pissed and jealous. These concerts are brilliant...
Cave's work, even the exquisitely beautiful ballads, always have a hint of something sinister beneath the surface. In concert, Cave brings that intangible quality out into the light like he's performing some demonic sermon...only Tom Waits does this balancing act of "beautiful maladies" better. This is a "must have" collection for any fan of Cave, some of these songs were meant for a live performance..."Carry Me," "Stagger Lee," and "Sad Waters" come to mind as beneficiaries of the Seeds' live act...and folks, I'm just talking about the DVDs. The 2CD set clocks in at approx. 90 minutes and every seong is riveting...I wish more songs made it onto this record because the band is in fine form. The set list is a mix of old gems like "Red Right Hand" and "The Weeping Song" sprinkled among the best of the Abbatoir record including "Let The Bells Ring," "O Children" (which leads of cd 1 and was so good, it locked me into my chair for the rest of the disc), and "Breathless." This is one of the few live collections I would recommend to someone only slightly familiar with an artist's work. I want to give this as a gift to people I want to learn about the Seeds...it is brilliant.

I can't believe no one has reviewed this yet! I think this is the best 80's Bowie video. If you like Bowie, then you will LOVE this. In this concert, Bowie and his kick-ass band play through a great song set. His band includes the excellent Carlos Alomar on guitar, who comes out in the first couple of minutes and shows where Steve Vai and Joe Satriani got their ideas from, Carmine Rojas on bass, who along with the drummer, lay down incredible rhythm for every song, and of course, Peter Frampton, whose guitar is just excellent song after song. Bowie and Frampton are old school pals, and they used to hang out and play music when they were teens, where Bowie says Frampton was already an excellent guitarist--Bowie brings him along and kind of brings him back into the game here, and he delivers. Bowies vocals are incredible throughout. He and a cast do try to do some theater/drama stuff, which sometimes is really cool, and sometimes kind of corny, but who cares? It is the music that matters man. enjoy.
