(More customer reviews)It would be easy to typecast Christina Aguilera as a teen phenomenon, but one viewing of this DVD should convince even the most anti-teen singer skeptics to realize the simple fact that her voice is one of the best in music today. This video, which is a compilation of her big pop hits, Christmas classics, cuts from her less radio-saturating Spanish-language album and a few choice covers is a view into Christina's ability to do what she does best - sing live.
She is lumped in with Britney Spears, but her vocal talent far exceeds that of her Britney and their other peers. Her cover of the Etta James classic "At Last" not only shows she has the voice, but the soul to go along with it. While other reviewers have commented negatively on her sometimes overly-theatrical vocal acrobatics, it's amazing to watch a young singer discover the power and range of her own voice. She does so on this DVD.
Few performers can match the quality of their studio recordings when performing live, and even fewer can exceed it. Christina Aguilera exceeds it, and we can only hope that she will continue to assert her artistic nature and branch out beyond the quick success of bubble gum pop and into bigger and better genres.

Because each track is a showcase of Buckley's uninhibited, without apology, take it or leave it songwriting, interpretation, and rendering. Because it is clear producers Michael Tighe and Mary Guibert really worked to construct and produce a better than "best of" live experience. Because audience clutter serves to enhance rather than detract, adding to the emotion Buckley hurls from himself and wrenches from the listener, starting with Dream Brother, perhaps climaxing on Eternal life, and ending breathlessly with Hallelujah/I Know it's Over medley. Or perhaps simply because of the little gem in The Man That Got Away, an Arlen-Gershwin song.
Mystery White Boy is a gift for those of us who never saw Jeff Buckley and his band live.

On the eve of the millenial new year, Prince decided that a new year's eve concert as a pay-per-view event was a good idea. Many didn't think so. At first it was named after that year's lackluster album "Rave un2 the joy fantastic" which didn't show Prince's full musical genius to a cynical public who thought him to be a product of the 80's (how wrong they are) and to make matters worse, the concert was marketed as the last concert to ever feature a live performance of the song "1999" !. All that aside, one thing is proven after watching this concert, Prince was, is and always will be a musical force to be reckoned with. From his truly individual musical style, to his unparalled ability in instrumentation (anything from guitar, keyboards, drums to even Harp!), this man was created for music and in this concert it shows. From the opening moments with a blazing guitar solo on "Let's go crazy" to a truly rocking version of "She's always in my hair" to a blues medley that is nothing short of amazing to even a funky version of "Higher" to numerous other gems, this is what all concerts should be: raw, adrenalin-rushing music performed by a man whose eneregy and love for what he does shows in every single minute of this concert and supported by a band that couldn't be any tighter (just wait for Maceo Parker's entrance !). Directed with pure energey and featuring moments of musicianship that would make even the harshest critic acknowledge the undeniable, this is Prince at his best, pure and simple.

(More customer reviews)"Screaming Infidelities" (5/5): An amazing song, the first single off of his second record "The Places..."
"The Sharp Hint Of New Tears" (5/5): I can't help but sing along with this song.
"Living In Your Letters" (4/5): Really emotional lyrics about a person the songwriter cares about.
"The Swiss Army Romance" (5/5): The title track is superb. Extremely catchy.
"Turpentine Chaser" (5/5): The bridge of this song is so good it gives me the chills.
"A Plain Morning" (3/5): This is not a bad song, just not great.
"Age Six Racer" (4/5): Really touching lyrics and soft background vocals make this one great.
"Again I Go Unnoticed" (5/5): An intensly emotional tune.
"Ender Will Save Us All" (5/5): Another song that is always stuck in my head, i love it.
"Shirts And Gloves" (4/5): This soft ballad is a winner.
"Hold On" (3/5): I don't know why, but this one doesn't do anything for me.
"This Is A Forgery" (4/5): Kind of different for Dashboard, but not bad at all.
"Hidden Track" (4/5): I enjoy the raw feel of this song.
Chris Carraba's first release as Dashboard Confessional is a great album. It was re-released three years after it came out, now with some bonus tracks. The real gems here are the title track and "Again I Go Unnoticed." There are only like one or possibly two songs that i skip through when listening to this. Great effort overall.
Rating: Four stars.

Inside Job Review

(More customer reviews)Let's face it, I'd take Don Henley over most of the trash I'm hearing on the radio these days and seeing on MTV. I've read much of the criticism surrounding this cd. Don Henley's too critical, he's too this, he's too that. Who are the people reviewing his disc? Have they forgotten that Henley has always had a myopic view on life? Even when he was with the Eagles, don't you remember the lyrics to "Life In The Fast Lane"? As for Henley's past solo works, he was just the same with "Dirty Laundry", "Driving With Your Eyes Closed", and "The End Of The Innocence" lyrically, and viewpoint-wise, as he is on his new cd. The fact that Henley sings about the record business, a place where he works, in a less than positive way, takes guts. How many people can stand up to their bosses and say they're not happy with the way things are run? On "Inside Job" I believe Henley's edge is softer. Sure, his insights are pessimistic, but they are awfully close to the truth and that's something few people like to hear. Musically, this cd is probably not as well played as his earlier work, but who said it is Henley's job to outdo a catalog that most artists would be enviable of? Also, Henley is over 50 now, and I don't expect him to make music like he used to. He's also been out of the music scene for 11 years, so if this cd seems shakey, allow some slack. As for using drum machines, I think it's good. I think Henley is getting with the times. His other albums had instrumentation that was popular at that time too, and I didn't hear any complaints about synthesizers. I happen to appreciate Henley for writing about the human condition from an insightful standpoint like Dylan, Springsteen, Waits, Mellencamp and Lennon. Today, there are so few artists that even care to sing and write about the world they live in. Everything's sex and violence (Stanley Kubrick would be proud). With "Inside Job" the trouble isn't Henley's viewpoint, it's the music. It's certainly debatable as to whether Henley has made his best possible effort here, but as it is, it's at least four stars. It's not garbage. Garbage is mostly what you hear on the radio today. Hey, Henley didn't sample someone elses music did he? He's not singing about sex and violence from an immature perspective is he? Maybe some of the reviewers should lighten up?

The Best Of Taj Mahal Review

(More customer reviews)I had heard the name, Taj Mahal over the years but never took the time to investigate his music. Then one day while listening to the radio, the song "Fishing Blues" came on and it sparked my interest. When I saw that he had this "Best Of..." collection I figured it would be a good place to start. Well,I haven't stopped playing it since I recieved it. What a find, this is great music! Every track on this cd touched me in some way. Songs like "Statesboro Blues", "Leaving Trunk", and "She Caught The Katy" are gritty, bluesy, and soulful. Taj sings with a voice that was made for the blues, and plays a mean harmonica to boot.
Aside from the songs on this collection that really cook, there are others that seem to transcend the blues and create a different feeling. "Corinna", "Take A Giant Step" and "Johnny Too Bad" are more thoughtful and laid back, making for a good mix of tempos'. Then, just when I thought it couldn't get much better, I listened to the jazzed up, instrumental "Ain't Gwine To Whistle Dixie (No Mo')". Awesome! Then there's "Oh Susanna", a song that you might think you've heard before as a child, but not like this! I could go on, but just know that all in all this is a collection of incredible, inspired music from a great artist,and track for track, it's one of the best albums I have ever purchased.

(More customer reviews)I am a mother of a teenage daughter and purchased the cd for her on the day it came out. I opened it and played it in the car on the way home. Upon ariving home I found myself sitting in the car in the garage because I wanted to hear all of the songs. At first listening all I could think of is that I needed to hear it again, and again, and again. A lot of the kids reviewing the cd here are only interested in records and the competition between the 2 boy bands. Get real kids. This cd is so far superior to the No Strings Attached cd that to say anything different is a downright lie. Buy this cd. It is great.
