(More customer reviews)Have Guitar, Will Travel, Joe Perrys second solo album was recorded in mid 2009 when Aerosmith had tons of downtime due to injuries and Steven Tylers lack of inspiration for the band. While it isn't as strong as his first solo album, or even as good as his best album with The Joe Perry Project, Have Guitar, Will Travel is still a fine rock n' roll record.
The lead single 'We've Got A long Way To Go' rocks like Aerosmith use to, 'Slingshot' rivals that of 'Walk On Down' and 'Combination' as Perrys greatest musical contribution. 'Somebodys Gonna Get (Their Head Kicked In Tonite)' reminds us why Perry is the legendary guitar God he is. 'Wooden Ships' which was dedicated to Les Paul is the guitar tour de force us Perry fanatics have been waiting for. 'Freedom' sounds rehashed but is still better than the majority of Aerosmiths out-put in the last 15 years.
Leaning mainly on his slide work, as does most of his work outside of Aerosmith Perry lets the world know that while Aerosmith may be down and out, the Admiral sure as hell ain't.

Scorpions: Live at Wacken Open Air 2006 (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)Well, after months of hearing about it, my most anticipated DVD of 2008 finally arrived and I have mixed feelings. From a performance standpoint, this is an AWESOME show featuring guest appearances by ex-Scorps Michael Schenker, Uli Jon Roth, and Herman Rarebell. The addition of these great musicians for a one-night reunion is a blessing for those of us who listened to the Scorpions long before Rock You Like a Hurricane took the mainstream rock world by storm in the early 80s. All musicians are at the top of their game, and enjoying themselves on this special night.
Unfortunately, as is often the case with DVDS these days, this suffers from the dreaded MTV-video style editing throughout, causing even non-epileptics to go into seizures after awhile. Special guest guitarists Roth and Schenker deserve more camera time during their brief appearances, but their amazing solos were caught only momentarily in the unyeilding flashing of images.
Camera shots changing every second is fine for a 4 minute video, but it gets really annoying on a concert that stretches over two hours. Someone needs to string these video editors up by the gonads and let them hang for a week on CNN Updates to get the point across. It virtually ruins my ability to just sit and watch the concert all the way through (unless I'm really drunk or multi-tasking).

I also have some issues with the audio. On my 5.1 computer system speakers, the volume is very low and I have to max out all controls to get it to sound anywhere near a rock concert. Also, the bass end is lost in the mix and I had to really boost up both my EQ and subwoofer to get some PUNCH out of this show. When I did that, the bass guitar was just a rumbly drone.
In contrast, on my television's old-school tower speakers with a modern subwoofer, the over-all volume level is fine (probably because of the amplifier), but again the bass guitar is distorted when I tune the subwoofer to kick me with the drums. A legendary concert of this magnitude deserves a better mix in my opinion.
I do have to give the audio engineers credit on the 5.1 surround mix though, it is a fantastic use of the technology. Really cool stereo/front-rear effects, and they are featured throughout. Hearing it on my tv's stereo system just doesn't do it justice compared to the surround.
With the video/audio flaws setting this DVD at 3 stars, the nearly perfect musical performance brings it up to a solid 4 STARS and is still worthy of purchase for any long-time Scorpions fan. My recommendation: BUY IT!
It's probably the best Scorpions concert you'll ever get to see in your living room.

Corridors of Power Review

(More customer reviews)This album was originally released back in the early '80s, but it never received the attention it deserved. After Gary released this he went on tour in support of Def Leppard on the Pyromania tour. Although he was able to play in front of huge audiences this album never did "take off", and it's a shame because this was a great release.
The intro to the song End Of The World featured a terrific instrumental piece that would please any shred fan, and this was before shred became popular. Don't Take Me For A Loser was a very good "rocker". The album contained two ballads (Always Gonna Love You and Falling In Love With You) that if they had been relaesed they would have been #1 hits, and they would have sent this album soaring up the charts. If you like great guitar playing and good "melodic" harder rock songs pick this one up. You won't be disappointed!!

(More customer reviews)"Emotion and Commotion" is Jeff Beck's much-anticipated new release. Clocking in at just about 40 minutes, there is no wasted space on the disc. I will not go through track by track, as the other reviewers have done a nice job summarizing each song. Basically on this album, Beck leaves behind the high-powered techno and electronica flavors of his previous albums "Jeff," "You Had It Coming" and "Who Else" and goes for a more laid-back, worldly groove of classic rock fusion with classical undertones. Besides his amazing tone, these songs are wonderful. The covers are arranged well and tastefully done. Anyone who can transition from the beautiful "Somewhere over the Rainbow" to Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put A Spell On You" and back to Jeff Buckley's "Lilac Wine" and make it cohesive within the album is doing something right. The Beck originals, "Hammerhead" and "Serene" are also well-written.
I recently started listening to Jeff Beck a couple years ago. I admit that I am a newcomer to his music. As a guitar player, I cannot even begin to comprehend Beck's tone and virtuoso skills. I am blown away by what he is able to achieve on his instrument. This album is highly recommended to 1)Any Jeff Beck fan (obviously), 2)Anyone who plays the guitar and wants to understand what is capable on the instrument, 3)Anyone who wants to explore creative and exciting new music, produced by one of the most criminally under-rated musicians of our time. For his first studio album in seven years, Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Beck returns with an eclectic mix of tracks that find the guitar virtuoso accompanied by a handpicked cast of talented musicians, as well as several songs accompanied by a 64-piece orchestra. Rhino unleashes the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer s restless genius with EMOTION & COMMOTION. Beck recorded EMOTION & COMMOTION late last year at Sarm Studios in London with award-winning producers Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn. To create the album s diverse sound, Beck used a number of musicians, including appearances by frequent collaborators Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards), and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass). The album also includes contributions from a trio of singers: Imelda May ('Lilac Wine'), Olivia Safe ('Elegy For Dunkirk'), and Grammy-winner Joss Stone ('I Put A Spell On You' and 'There s No Other Me').To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini s immortal aria 'Nessun Dorma' and Elegy For Dunkirk from the film Atonement to 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' from The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Buckley s interpretation of 'Corpus Christi Carol.' Beck says the idea of pairing his guitar with an orchestra evolved from the version of Gustav Mahler s Symphony No. 5 he recorded a few years ago. 'It turned out amazingly well, but I didn t want to commit to an entire album of classical music. What appealed to me instead was the idea of bringing together these seemingly contradictory sounds on different kinds of nonclassical music.'In addition to the orchestral pieces, EMOTION & COMMOTION showcases a number of original compositions.
