(More customer reviews)I'm sorry but if Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham ARE Fleetwood Mac to you, then you are not a fan of Fleetwood Mac, but a fan of Stevie Nicks and/or Lindsey Buckingham, and the work they have done with the Mac. Fleetwood Mac is my favorite band, and I have at least enjoyed (if not loved) everything they have done since 1967. Time is certainly not my favorite Mac album, but it is an enjoyable album nevertheless. It has some extremely cheery and upbeat songs on it, and is perfect for driving on a sunny day.
Christine McVie is my all time favorite Mac member, and all five of her songs are very likeable. Her voice is as strong as ever, and is the saving grace in songs that suffer from somewhat generic songwriting. I definetly prefer Dave Mason's work with Traffic to his Mac efforts, and his song Blow By Blow is probably the worst (or at least the most boring) on the album. He does have a nice singing voice though, and plays some great lead guitar. Bekka Bramlett is in my opinion underrated on this album. Sure the songwriting in her tunes isn't the most inspired work you'll ever hear, but you can't ignore her voice. People who see her as a Stevie Nicks knock off are probably just sore over the absence of Ms. Nicks. Although Bramlett does have a somewhat raspy voice, and I'm sure that this was no coincidence on the part of the band, you can really hear her struggling to find her own little niche here. At times soulful, and others sweet and vulnerable she is a very strong vocalist, and her Dreamin' the Dream is one of my favorite Mac songs (if only for her singing on it). I love Billy Burnette's work with the Mac (more so on the 'Behind the Mask' album than here) but his singing and guitar playing go very well with Bramlett's voice throughout the album. And then of course you have drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John Mcvie. It just wouldn't be Fleetwood Mac without them. Not just because they are where the band gets it's name from, but because they provide the music with it's driving rhythm. Their performances are very strong on Time (as they are on any album), and I won't be the first to say that they are one of music's greatest rhythm sections.
I wish that we had heard more form this lineup of Fleetwood Mac because I think that they could have only improved. 'Time' is a good if not great album, and should please real Fleetwood Mac fans who have loved the band through all of the changes that they have undergone.

Judds Reunion: Live Review

(More customer reviews)In the younger Judd days, Wynonna was kind of the "Silent' partner with the great voice, and the focus tended to be on Naomi. (Even though, the movie portrayal of Wynonna as a little girl depicted a sarcastic, hilarious little hellion). Now that she's all grown up, Wynonna has come into her own and developed an "intrigue" and "fascination" as incredible as Naomi's, and her voice (always wonderful) has strengthened and become even more powerful.
This was the "concert" you never wanted to end. They sang all their best songs, and it's as if they reach out and send love and compassion and hope through their music and through their lives.
I am fighting a terminal illness, and I have learned one important thing from the Judds. I remember in the movie when the Judds were starting out and getting rejected by everyone, and they were discouraged, Wynonna said to her mother, "What are the chances of our making it anyway--about a billion to one?" Naomi answered her and said, "Then, we'll be that one!" I never forgot it. When a doctor told me my chances were about a million to one, I remembered Naomi and said, "Then I'll be that one!" These two women have given us all so much in so many ways. I read somewhere that Naomi struggles because she wants to "save" everybody, and she can't. Maybe not, but she can certainly give people the "Hope" and the "Faith" in God to save themselves, and she has done that. God bless these two wonderful women!

(More customer reviews)All those other so called "Divas" out there like Jennifer "J-Lo" Lopez, Mariah "Heartbreaker" Carey, Whitney Houston, Janet, "Ms. Jackson if you're nasty" Jackson, and the three ladies from Destiny's Child had better stand to the side when The Acid Queen enters the room. All of the above mentioned artists and this includes Britney and Christina need to purchase this DVD, and let Tina show them how its done. Tina is the very definition of Diva, and only Patti Labelle, or Aretha Franklin could nearly keep up with her. Tina is the sexiest woman alive. She has the legs of an Olympic gymnast, and oozes sensuality just standing there. But when she breathlessly belts out "Private Dancer" with that sexy sax, she is absolutley everything, erotic, sensual, sexual, gorgeous, and boy does she hold that Rio crowd of 180,000 in the palm of her hand. No one on that stage could possibly keep up with her energy level on that HOT night in Rio. Tina sings her behind off, and leaves everything on that stage. Watch for the festival dancers onstage during "Typical Male" No one can do it like Tina, and Ike Turner must cringe evertime he realizes that he is nothing but a second rate guitarist, while Tina is an international superstar. Viva Tina!!!

(More customer reviews)This is,in my opnion, the best Tina concert video every. The concert was filmed in 1990 as part of the Foriegn Affair World Tour which broke record all over the world. The tour played to more than 3 million people and did 120 shows. Tina is absolutly amazing in this video. She gives out 16 great numbers with the help of her band, dancers, 3 costume changes, a suspended crane that goes 100 feet into the audience, and tons of fireworks and pirotechnics. And dont forget the huge 30 step stair case. The setlist includes Steamy Windows, Typical Male, Foriegn Affair, Undercover Agent For the Blues, Ask Me How I Feel, We Dont Need Another Hero, Private Dancer, Nutbush City Limits, Addiceted To Love, The Best, I Dont Wanna Lose You, Whats Love Got To Do With It, Lets Stay Together, Proud Mary, Better Be Good, and finishes with Be Tender. The only flaw in this video is that they didnt show the whole concert. The cut out Show Some Respect, I Cant Stand The Rain, and River Deep Mountain High. This concert was filmed at the Barcelona Stadium and was performed infront of 70,000 fans. GO TINA!

Now they have packaged it with 4 new songs. Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland are my favorite new songs on the CD. Silver Bells is my favorits song on the entire CD.
If you are a Martina McBride fan or if you just like Christmas music, this is for you.

Fleetwood Mac: The Dance (1997) Review

(More customer reviews)That's simply unbelievable! I'm definitely not a fan of Fleetwood Mac and you would be ashamed of me if I told you that the only 2 songs of Fleetwood Mac I liked before were "Everywhere" and "The Seven Wonders", the latter being not on the DVD.
That said, I was really intrigued by the other reviews and, baffled, I decided to give it a chance. Ooooh, I wish I had more inspirations like this one!!!
In this concert, shot in the premises of Warner Bros Studios, the band reunited to give the audience the best, the *very* best of themselves, humanly speaking. The old songs are all performed in a new version, giving them an emotional power they didn't have before. Fleetwood Mac also plays stupendous unpublished works, including instrumentals and brand-new songs, which proves that Fleetwood Mac is as sparkling as in the past and, in my opinion, even more sparkling than ever!
Look at Mick Fleetwood! Yeh... look at him! Have you ever seen an old timer like him playing the drums with so much pleasure, conviction and dexterity? I bet that from the very first song ("The Chain"), you'll know what I mean.
Lindsey Buckingham is really impressive. He plays several guitars and even the banjo in the concert and it's a delight to watch him juggling with the notes. You'll be very likely amazed by his solo performance in "Big Love" and "Go insane".
And especially, don't watch the grand finale of "I'm so afraid" with a friend at home. If he falls on the terrific instrumental duet between Mick and Lindsey, his first idea might well be to get the hell out of your house with your DVD in the pocket!!
As for Stevie Nicks, she still has her angel voice. She's very convincing when she sings, because her tone and pitch always match the lyrics but never in an exaggerated way. You'll also notice that she dances like a bird flies, it's so light and aerial. You'll also appreciate Stevie's cheerfulness. When she talks to the public, she sounds so happy to see you there that you really sympathize with her feelings. Why, it makes you feel good!!
I read some reviews saying that Christine Mc Vie had lost the magic of her voice after all these years. Maybe. But I don't care. It is perhaps a pitch lower but she knows how to master it and that's why Christine and her voice will seduce you a long time yet. Just listen to her version of Everywhere: isn't that cute?
Her ex-husband John, because he plays the bass, stays more in the background. That said, he's a great support for Lindsey and shows his great sense of humour when Christine tries to force him to sing with the whole band in "Say You Love Me".
The songs are all absolute gems. Yet you may have difficulties to tackle "My Little Demon", because the tune and the words are weird! I learnt to like it and understand it (a lot of Lindsey's songs have a context related to his life) and I no longer skip it now. Expect a surprise at the end of the concert and don't forget to savour the conclusion song, offered by Christine. You'll be so upset that you'll be mad at them for leaving so soon.
The quality of the DVD is excellent! The sound, Dolby 5.1 or PCM Stereo, is perfect. The picture is clear and flawless. My God, how did they do that?!
You want to be forgiven by your wife? Offer her this DVD! You want to be spoilt by your granny? Ask her this DVD!
Whatever the way you'll get it, watch it in the evening. "It's going to be a special night for us", Stevie Nicks said. For you too.

Wild Heart Review

The Wild Heart was Stevie Nicks' follow up to her platinum selling debut, Bella Donna, and proved that this woman did not need Fleetwood Mac to be successful. Many have said that Bella Donna was Stevie's greatest work, but after listening to this album, I'm not so sure. While Bella Donna was moody and dramatic, The Wild Heart has more rockin' songs and also some of Stevie's best vocals ever. Another point that many have brought up is that Wild Heart is a Bella Donna part 2. I have to disagree with these people. When you listen to the two albums back to back, they are evidently different. On Wild Heart, Stevie began to experiment with synthesizers, which were not in Bella Donna at all. She moved away from the country-ish sound she had on her debut album, to a more pop and rock orientated album.
1. Wild Heart: Stevie's title tracks are known for being epic rockers, and this song is no exception. Stevie even wails a bit at the end, one of my favorite parts of this song. 4/5
2. If Anyone Falls: One of the singles of the album, it made #16 on the pop-charts. It has a nice danceable beat to it, and the harmonies on the chorus are beautiful. 4/5
3. Gate and Garden: This is one of Stevie's songs that has taken a lot of flak over the years because of it's vague lyrics. However, the music and the vocals on this track make it work. 4/5
4. Enchanted: One of my favorite Stevie solo songs. A very nice country/rock feel and the piano is just great. You also get a taste of how powerful Stevie's voice was at this time. 5/5
5. Nightbird: A song written about Stevie's friend Robyn Anderson who had died soon after Stevie had released Bella Donna. This track has some great, dark music to it and I love the line, "I wear boots all summer long." 5/5
6. Standback: The big hit of the album, reaching the #6 spot on the charts. This is definitely one of the highlights of the disc. It surges along on a synthesizer hook and Stevie really rocks this one. 5/5
7. I Will Run To You: The duet with Tom Petty on the album. This is actually a very good song and I prefer it to Stop Draggin' My Heart Around (from Bella Donna). 4/5
8. Nothing Ever Changes: The real rocker on this album. It just has so much energy and Stevie's voice is killer. She sounds so angry and powerful. Also, it has some nice sax and piano work. 5/5
9. Sable on Blonde: This song is just amazing. "To be brave save the stranger...Sable on Blonde." Wow I just love this song, the production is great and the vocals are sublime. 5/5
10. Beauty and the Beast: One of the most moving and beautiful songs Stevie has ever written. Stevie recorded this live with an orchestra, and the result is a haunting, dark ballad. Stevie's voice really shines on this one. And it just might be my favorite on the album. 5/5
There you have it. All in all, I still can't decide which is better, Wild Heart or Bella Donna. Check them out and see for yourself.

Melissa Etheridge - Live... and Alone (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (2001) Review

I was washing my car in a little car wash across the street from Christy's (the other Bono) restaurant when I remembered that that night was the premiere of the Movie of Melissa Etheridge's Live and Alone Concert.
So I went.
It is just like being at the concert except that you get to sit in a real seat.
It begins with some footage from the last time Melissa sang in a particular bar in Pasadena, California in 1987. She had so much promise and poise, even then. The bar scene flows into the time before right before this Concert which was filmed at the Kodak in Hollywood, in 2001. Even Stephen Spielberg hobbles into this pre-concert footage.
The concert is The Perfect Melissa Concert: the photography is great; her expressions are fierce and funny; and her voice just fills up the screen and the hearts of those who hear her.
Among other songs, she sings the two piano songs, Please Forgive Me and the Weakness In Me; and other songs in which she accompanies herself on the guitar, Down To One, Lover Please, American Girl, Chrome, Scarecrow, The Only One, Come To My Window, Somebody Bring Me Some Water and The Way I Do. There are other songs; I'm not a scribe.
Chrome is really a beautiful song and beautifully done.
Lover Please, shows Melissa's pain to the point of pleading but also, through the use of that garble-machine into which Melissa sputters the words `do you want me' (I think) and through the use of that harsh yellow light, I sense real anger, anger that I never heard in the song without the visual.
The photography and editing are excellent, occasionally there would be three shots of her singing on the screen at once - the movie was really well cut and crafted.
And Melissa is Melissa. It is extraordinary.
The deluxe DVD of this concert/movie will also contain footage of Melissa at home.
It is a must for every music lover.

Foreign Affair Review

(More customer reviews)"Foreign affair" is one of those albums that you just must have.
Tina Turner is a legend in music and everybody thinks that her 1984 hit album "Private dancer" it's her best because of the several Top 10 hits, the bunch of Grammy awards that it won and the almost 20 million copies it sold but "Foreing affair is more than that. Tina is at her very best (I'm not saying that she is not good anymore)I mean her look, she was still with her long hair, her voice, her lyrics and singing were stronger.
"Foreign affair" besides being and album full of strengh and fantastic lyrics and sounds was a very big hit. It sold almost 10 million copies, was nominated for several Grammy awards and has classic hits such as the #1 "The best", and the Top 16 singles "Steamy windows", "Be tender with me baby", "Foreign affair", "I don't wanna lose you" and "Look me in the heart".
This album was produced by Tina and hit singer/producer Tony Joe White who actually wrote some of the songs for the album.
Whether you're a Tina's fan or not you must have this one, really you won't be sorry at all.

Lilith Fair - A Celebration of Women in Music (1997) Review

(More customer reviews)Although this is a fine piece of work in general, the advertised 5.1 mix is simply not true. A true 5.1 mix has a wide spatial feel with different sound eliments coming out of the several speakers. This 5.1 mix is an obvious afterthough. The center channel is no more than a mono sum of the left and right channels, and the rear channels are some sort of mish mosh of the stereo mix with some ambience in it. There are also some really odd low frequency artifacts in the rear channels during the dialog and interview segments, due to some sort of unacceptable processing to fool the listener (and buyer) into thinking he is listening to a real 5.1 mix.
I can guarantee that this was a poor marketing decision and not what the remix engineer delivered. I know this because I was the remix engineer, and I was asked to deliver the stereo only mix that was originally done for the broadcast and pay-per-view version.
I encourage buyers to take up issue with DVD distributors who continue to market such poor quality.

(More customer reviews)The legendary Tina Turner's latest studio album is a blend of modern pop music. Theres rock, pop, R&B, all mixed together in this incredible recording. Turners voice sizzles throughout the eleven tracks. Stand out tracks is the #3 dance hit "when the heartache is over", also the uptempo ballad "whatever you need" and the declaring "all the woman" also of note are the thunderuos "without you" which features a cameo by Bryan Adams, and "twenty four seven" which is a great fun rock number in which Tina does best. over all this is simply one of her best albums, i think its just as good as "private dancer" there really isn't a bad song on the album, her longtime fans will be pleased, and her new followers will simply enjoy. Whats amazing is after over fourty years every fresh Tina Turner project is simply the best. Do yourself a favor purchase this incredible album.

Tina Turner - Simply the Best (1992) Review

(More customer reviews)The whole idea of DVD's is their capacity to accommodate more material. But this DVD is no different to the VHS release although it does have 5.1 surround sound as well as the traditional dolby digital 2.0.
Firstly, do not expect any special features, this is a bare bones release.
The track listing is acceptable, yet fails in some ways. As many reviewers have stated, several of the videos have been replaced with concert footage (a big 'no no' for a video collection). What's annoying to me is, the songs that have been replaced are personal favourites so I am a bit cheesed off.
Let's run through them:
We Don't Need Another Hero - a 1985 video does exist out there, but we get a lacklustre concert performance instead with Tina screaming rather than singing.
Typical Male - do you remember the excellent video for this? Well it aint included on the DVD. We get a concert performance again.
I Can't Stand the Rain - concert footage again. Perhaps a video was not made for this song.
It basically means that someone at EMI liked the concert footage more than the videos and decided we would all agree with him/her. Not so.
There is other concert footage on the DVD but it's okay because that was the way it was originally filmed (eg. Tina's live cover of "Addicted to Love").
One obvious ommission is "One of the Living", the second single from the "Mad Max 3" soundtrack. Perhaps copyright reasons prevented the use of this track.
Also missing are videos from the 1970's including "River Deep Mountain High" or "Proud Memory". I assume this is because the DVD focus on the 1980's (why not say so on the cover?). Still, the DVD could have been updated to include hits from the 90's - one can assume that a Volume 2 DVD must be in the works.
One inclusion that is a good selling point is the alternative video version of "What's Love Got to Do with It" (which was scrapped), as well as the version that got used worldwide.
Overall Summary:
An acceptable DVD which has been given a nice 5.1 surround sound remix. Picture quality varies throughout. Menus are nothing special. A DVD for fans in general, but die-hard fans will be somewhat disappointed.

Lucky Review

(More customer reviews)After the heartbreaking "Skin" a couple years ago, Melissa Etheridge has come back with an infectious, addicting, highly emotional, fun cd. Clearly, the tone of the album is polar opposite of "Skin".
"Secret Agent", "Giant", "If You Want To" and "Kiss Me" are great rock songs in every sense - lots of guitar, a driving beat, and sexy (as well as amusing) lyrics on "Secret Agent" and "Kiss Me".
The title track "Lucky" is the emotional setting of this album, and you will feel the happiness of it in each song that follows.
"Tuesday Morning" is a power packed, emotional tribute to Mark Bingham, the gay man who was on Flight 93 with Todd Beamer (of "Let's roll" fame). The song is pointed, political, amazingly well-written, and if it doesn't cover your body in gooesbumps and fill your eyes with tears, you're not breathing.
"Breathe" is the first single off the album, and I really like Melissa's version of it. It tends to stick in your head, and you'll find yourself humming it absently all the time.
"Mercy" has a nice blues feel to it, and I think it will be an amazing live piece. "This Moment", "The One", and "Will You Still Love Me" are tender ballads and classic Etheridge writing from her heart.
I could go on and on about "Lucky", but instead, I'll just say that if you're a Melissa Etheridge fan or a rock and roll fan or even a fan of great music in general, this is a must have in your collection.

Behind the Mask Review

(More customer reviews)Unless Lindsey Buckingham's music is your only reason for listening to Fleetwood Mac, this item is a must-have. Christine and Stevie showcase some of their best work here, including Affairs of the Heart, Freedom, and The Second Time by Stevie, and Skies the Limit and Save Me, excellent efforts by Christine.
One thing that did take me by surprise is how much I really did like the music of the "new" guys, Billy Burnette and Rick Vito. Their music fits very well with what we have come to know as Fleetwood Mac - highlights include Hard Feelings and Stand on the Rock.
In summary, listen to the clips at the bottom of this page; you will not be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)This is an astonishing album -- not only does it capture the essence of who Emmylou Harris is (as a singer and songwriter), but it showcases her wonderfully as a live performer. Spyboy is a brilliant title for this live CD. The spyboy is the young lad who leads off the Mardis Gras parade, which is a great metaphor for Harris' career. She has always been at the forefront of defining and redefining the confluence of country, rock, and folk music.
Here, she and her band beautifully reinterpret songs that she has made into classics. My Songbird, a Jesse Winchester gem, is delivered in classic Harris style -- aching, plaintive, and with an air of resignation. It doesn't matter that the song is written in the first person and spoken by a man. This is a haunting and painful song about separation that only Harris could deliver so sweetly.
This theme of pain, separation, and moving on permeates this recording, and is exemplified by such songs as Daniel Lanois' Where Will I Be, the traditional Green Pastures, and her own composition about Gram Parsons, Boulder to Birmingham. But this is not sappy sentimental country-folk-rock. Instead, it is intelligent music making in the same way that is true of other performers such as Richard and Linda Thompson, Mary Black, or Mary Chapin Carpenter.
The aura cast by the musicians is somewhat ethereal, being clearly influenced by Daniel Lanois, long-time producer of U2's recordings, and of Bob Dylan's Oh Mercy. Lanois' influence on Harris is most pronounced in her Wrecking Ball recording, a style that overflows into this live concert. In fact, Harris sings two Lanois compositions, in addition to Deeper Well (a song I have yet to appreciate), which they co-wrote. I have to admit that I'm getting a little tired of the Lanois style (he's also produced a recent Willie Nelson recording), however, there's no denying his success. My other pet peave is that any recording that Lanois produces includes one or two of his songs. He seems great at marketing himself and his production style. Mercifully, a performer like Harris is so transcendental that one doesn't notice such seeming trivialities. Rather, this (or any other Harris recording) is an experience not to be missed.

(More customer reviews)"Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71" - even in this cut state - is probably the only full-length Ike & Tina concert available on DVD today, so for that alone, it's well-worth owning.
It's all the more essential, though, because it's truly a blast - this is the most energetic, soulful, joyous live concerts I think I've ever seen - and the songs themselves are just crazy, vibrant, brilliant performances by one of the most talented musical outfits of the 1970s.
Although the predominantly Dutch audience doesn't quite seem to 'get' it at the beginning - whenever should such a concert be a seated gig, anyway? - it doesn't take in the least from our appreciation of the atmosphere, and, even though there are one or two glaring flaws in the DVD presentation itself (several of the more noteworthy tracks such as "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Respect" and "Shake a Tail Feather" are missing, why is this??), it still doesn't stop this from being a powerful and wonderful celebration of music and dance.
Tina's on top of her game here, to watch her is to really understand the love a great performer has of his genre. From her entrance, right up to the end of "I Smell Trouble", there's not one part of her body that isn't in constant rhythm with the music, and her voice is amazing - raspy and raw, with a power behind it that lends so much more depth to the songs than many of their original performers lacked. The dance routines with the Ikettes, thanks to what's now a more amateur and simple style of camerawork, are powerful and energetic; you want to get up off the couch and dance with them! "Proud Mary" and the amazing "I Wanna Take You Higher" are examples, but even on the more downbeat tracks such as "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Come Together" (the Beatles, except better! Who knew?!) the masterful combinations of musical arrangement, vocal and choreography show us precisely why the Ike & Tina Turner revue was such a respected live act.
This is an excellent DVD, the restoration - although not perfect - has a great audio quality, and the visuals are just fine. The CD is a nice addition, though it would have been better, obviously, to include all the tracks on the DVD. Special Features are interesting, including a great short of the Ike & Tina performance at the 1971 'Soul to Soul' concert in Africa. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough; even with its shortcomings, it's still a treasure and a great recording of one of the best live acts of all time.
