Le Tigre Review

Le Tigre

I've never written a fan letter before, but since listening to this album, I'm very tempted to write the three talented women of Le Tigre and thank them for reclaiming music as a medium that can inform, challenge, entertain, and inspire.
Not only are the songs themselves danceable and full of great melodies, but the lyrics are worth a close listen. The names invoked on "Hot Topic" (not unlike the [in]famous Billy Joel "We Didn't Start the Fire") are worthy of investigation-- from Sleater-Kinney to David Wojnarowicz. And the simple poetry of "Les and Ray" (the final song on the album) is truly touching.
As always, Kathleen Hanna is a major force behind the group's sound and energy, but the other two members are not to be ignored for their contributions. Sadie Benning was recently profiled in Time magazine of all places, and Johanna Fateman is the group's connection to the New York art scene. All three combine to produce an album that's thought-provoking-- but actually a real joy to listen to. One of my favorite albums of all time (and I'm actually a classical musician!).

Ok I was at this concert and while a LOT of time has past, I do remember this concert with great fondeness. In fact I meet TD at Captain Franks(a now closed sea food restauarnt in Cleveland) after the concert. This recording meets my memory and matches what I heard in the actual concert. The raw unproceesed nature (if you can say that with TD) of the recording is obvious. I bought this because I was there. If you have no sentimental reasons to buy it, than stick to the studio albums. In fact I just found the tour book sitting in a drawer next to my computer.

I've always liked Daft Punk, for me, but their albums never stay in rotation for more than a couple weeks without getting old. This live cd, on the other hand, is absolutely amazing-- I've had it for a few months now, and it still blows my mind.
You really feel the energy of the crowd in these songs, and you feel like you're right there if you close your eyes. I've heard the live show is "the best concert anyone has ever been, or will go, to", in the words of a friend. This album does a pretty good job of getting that point across.
The remixes of the songs are fantastic-- the melodies of different songs intertwine wonderfully. My favorites on the album are "Robot Rock/Oh Yeah" and "Television Rules The Nation/Crescendolls". Seriously, though, you won't find a fault with any of the songs. They're all great, easy to love, and even easier to dance to.
If you're a fan of electronic music, you HAVE to buy this. It's easily the best house/electronic album I've heard in a long time.

I love David Guetta. This CD has set a standard for DJ with various artists. I bought this CD for the Extended Mixes on disc 2 and got the remixes and DVD too. If you like extras such as remixes this will give you a chance to hear some of the remixes for When Love Takes Over and Sexy Bitch. As a result of this CD I bought all other David Guetta CD's and now have all the CD singles he has ever released. I can't wait for his future work with Estelle, Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears. He is one hot and in demand writer and producer.

With hip hop beats that spiral out of control, some deep fuzz bass that will shake the fillings loose in your teeth and a batch of compositions that sound completely unique and fresh from one another these 3 production geeks have created one of the most eccletic and diverse albums of the year. Originally released in Finland before U.S. domestic release Pepe Deluxe have managed to churn out a 2001 hip grabbag of sorts that shines. With sprinkles of old 45 scratches and smoke filled upright bass riffs makes you wonder how vast and expansive these guys' record collection really is. There is something for everyone here that is the super sound of Pepe Deluxe. A mix of of Big Beat, Electro, acid jazz and rump shakin dance floor epics geared to make you listen and learn where the new skool of sound is heading. Straight outta Finland!

Legend Of The Black Shawarma Review

This album is basically exactly what you would expect from IM if you have followed them for their last few albums. Viscous Delicious was a big step on the way from pure trance to the unique sound that IM has developed. You will recognize, in this CD, several themes introduced in Viscous Delicious CD, but the songs and sounds are evolving and more refined than they were in Viscous Delicious, while still raw and in your face. I am not certain that this CD has quite as much energy as say 'Eat it Raw' and a couple other songs on Viscous Delicious had, but overall, I think I like it better, as there is not a single track on this CD that is boring. Perhaps the best way to state it is that if Viscous Delicious had moments ranging from 6-10, this album is a solid 8-9 all the way through.
Personally, I feel there is plenty of pure trance out there, if that's what I am looking for, but when I am in the mood for IM, there is nothing else like them. I am so glad they decided to continue on the evolutionary path they are on, because there is nobody else doing what they do and I love what they are doing.

These psy-trance innovators have become one of the biggest electronic bands on the planet. Twice ranked among the world's ten best DJs by the bible of the scene, the UK's DJ Magazine, the Israel-bred, LA-based duo bring a frenetic rock energy to the form. Their explosive show, featuring guitars, live drums, intensely passionate vocals, and an ambitious multimedia backdrop ranks among the genre's most unpredictably joyous events. Their recordings continually venture where other electronic acts fear to tread. The follow-up to 2007's "Vicious Delicious" marks a return to their metal roots. Armin has done it again. If your are expecting a crazy, uptempo, and hardcore trance CD, you won't find it on this CD by Armin. Altough this CD still has some amazing non-vocal upbeat trance in the first and last track, the rest of the CD is vocal trance. And it is simply amazing. It is one of those CDs you do not have to change tracks or fastforward, just let it play. Armin shows his briliance and versatility on this CD and he proves why he is the #1 DJ and producer in the world.

Real Life Is No Cool Review

Real Life Is No Cool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The formula of Lindstrøm's expansive sounds and Christabelle's icing-on-the-cake voice adds up to a genuinely good album, Real Life Is No Cool works like good ecstasy on a dancefloor.
Composed of free-floating tidbits of sounds, Real Life Is No Cool shows Lindstrøm's newest take on retro-futurism. While his former works are always rooted in some sort of genre, the tracks here seem to break free from any mold he has founded. Although this may seem like it would detract from any sense of accessibility on this album, Lindstrøm's latest work is chock full of pop sensibilities.
Lindstrøm mines a rich seam of old funk, soul and disco, taking these ingredients and producing a brand of retro-futurist, multi-layered stomp-fest all of his own. The floating passivity of Christabelle's seemingly improvised couplets bring a welcome level of humanity back to the field and uplifts by means of raw emotional connection, rather than one repeated-to-death motif.
This Scandinavian sound has been spearheaded by the likes of Prins Thomas and Morgan Geist, culminating in the runaway success of their take-over of the Big Chill's Club tent a couple of year ago. After releasing some storming 12"'s and becoming a sought-after remixer in his own right on Oslo's Smalltown Supersound compilations, Lindstrom himself first broke through to wider acclaim with his debut It's A Feedelity Affair. He finally followed this last year with the epic mini-album Where You Go I Go Too which refined and built upon his trademark atmospherics to beguiling effect, appearing in many critic's `Best Of 2009' lists. All of which has a certain bearing on the level of expectation around this full length collaboration with fellow Norwegian, Christabelle.
The real revelation here is Lindstrøm's newfound concision. An idea that's satisfied in three minutes has never been a goal in any of his music before; whatever the merits of Where You Go I Go Too, none of its three tracks could ever work as a single edit. But Real Life changes that, charting beats and manic drum passages in digestible bites. "Baby Don't Stop," whose Chromeo meets Kool & the Gang opening seems in questionable taste until the whole, surprisingly and thrillingly, familiarizes as a Michael Jackson tribute of the highest order, is pop in glaring pieces. And from those pieces (catchy bass riff, syncopated guitar lick, punchy horns) to the disco beat and disco words ("Can't stop / I can't get enough"), it's nothing less than a worthy reimagining of "Don't Stop `til You Get Enough," which makes it the album's standout track--not necessarily the best track, though there's an argument for that as well, but the one most at odds with all of Lindstrøm's output before.
It can be unsettling to witness the artist seemingly alienate himself from his defining music; I almost want to sigh with relief when a synthesizer briefly replaces a horn line, moving a track in a more comfortable disco direction. Or see other jarring moments: the 4/4 dance beat competing with slow guitar triplets on "Looking for What?; the backing track staggering along on "Lovesick" while Christabelle sounds physically ill; the tape-looped psychedelic noise assault of "Never Say Never." These deviations from the Lindstrøm norm, not to mention Christabelle's very presence, carry a novelty that can initially prevent any song from congealing properly, making the whole pop move a dead-end.
Only in time does Real Life is No Cool seem a logical step for Lindstrøm to have taken. "Let It Happen" moves to the ultra-smooth groove at the backbone of a thick synthetic haze--it's resonant but not frilly, punchy but not overwhelming. All the consistent, buzzing sonority makes the machine-gun drums echo forebodingly while a male voice adds some low-end opacity to an already deep soundscape; remove the vocals and you're looking at an uptempo outtake from Where You Go I Go Too. Real Life`s pacing especially anticipates the criticism that the record moves too far, too fast. Every time Lindstrøm leaves his comfort zone--or the listener's comfort zone in what the listener expects from him--he calmly but authoritatively leads us back into recognizable pastures. After starting the record with six minutes of controlled chaos, he mimics the mechanical, hyper-planned feel of his long-form suites when the beat snaps to attention on "Lovesick." Similarly, the rat-tat-tat drums on "Let It Happen" lead into "Keep It Up"'s treble synths and steady, driving repetition; the forceful horns on "Baby Can't Stop" give way to a largely formless "Let's Practise"; and the clamorous "Never Say Never" sets the stage for the drowsy closer "High & Low."
It's a long-form pattern evolving in patchwork, a big declarative departure, risky but assured, for a shamelessly poppy direction. These sensibilities may have been channeled into something less approachable in the past, or at least less practical, but his attention to detail and ear for melody were always there, waiting to be mined. Once the shock of the new dissipates, what's left is an impeccably assembled record worth indulging with the vigor that any of Lindstrøm's Christabelle-less work deserves.

This Delicate Thing We've Made (2 CDS) Review

Darren Hayes, former multiplatinum-selling frontman for Aussie duo Savage Garden (Truly, Madly, Completely- The Best of Savage Garden), has come into his own on This Delicate Thing We've Made. It's been a whirlwind few years for Hayes: on his third solo album after Spin (2002) and The Tension And The Spark (2005), Darren parted ways with Sony, started his own label Powdered Sugar, and married his partner Richard Cullen in a civil ceremony in London.
As one review rightly pointed out, if Hayes was still attached to Sony / Columbia, no megaconglomerate record company would have ever financed anything as ambitious and hard to categorize as This Delicate Thing We've Made. Spanning 25 tracks on 2 CDs, the album is all over the place sonically in a tribute to some of Darren's idols, including Prince, Michael Jackson, and Kate Bush, and the authentic retro vibe is courtesy of a 1983 Fairlight CMI syth. Darren's earlier collaborations with Robert Conley on Spin (Crush (1980 Me) and Tension and the Spark continue on TDTWM, along with Justin Shave as producer (Justin played keyboards on Darren's Big Night In tour).
Even though there is a unifying theme of time travel, Darren's bouncing off the sonic walls, from funk to electro to boy band to uniquely Darren. Unexpected samples (barking dogs, airplanes, horses) crop up in the middle of songs, and two songs (Conversations with God and Neverland) strongly remind me of Tori Amos-influenced Casey Stratton (Standing at the Edge), who shares the same soaring falsetto and sense of lyrical drama.
My main issue is the balance between uptempo flirtations with electronica (club hit Step Into the Light, Casey, Listen All You People, Me, Myself, and I) and slower ballads, which make up most of the second disc. I feel that TDTWM lacks the overall cohesiveness of Tension and the Spark, and I find myself skipping over a few of the tracks (the aforementioned Bombs Up In My Face and the dark, gritty Setting Sun). However, TDTWM grows on me with each successive listen. It's such a nuanced, complex work that multiple listens are required to do Darren's creative vision justice.
This special edition features deluxe packaging (suede clamshell box) with a double-sized booklet containing exclusive photos.
Kudos to Darren for the creative, pass-the-good-karma origami bird marketing that ties in with TDTWM's theme. He encourages fans to print an origami bird, write a wish or note (world peace, happiness, someone loves you, etc.), fold it, and leave it in a public place for others to find. If you find a bird, you can upload its location and a photo to neonbird dot com/something-wonderful

Darren Hayes is not only one of the finest (if not most underrated) singers and songwriters of our generation, he is also a master of reinvention. 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' is released on Hayes' own label, Powdered Sugar, and is the record he has wanted to make for years. Now he is his own boss, he's doing everything his own way. Bizarrely, it's the most commercial-sounding thing he's ever done. His old record label, Columbia, must be kicking themselves. The album is a double-disc pop opus. It is a deeply felt, moving, and joyous celebration of life and of pop music. Though the tracks vary in style and genre, often deliberately sequenced so as to draw attention to their differences ("Setting Sun" followed by "A Hundred Challenging Things" is one of the most dramatic changes of mood I've ever heard), together they form a whole that is one of the most enjoyable and one of the most intelligent pop albums of the last decade. It seems inspired by, and certainly deserves to be regarded alongside, albums such as Madonna's 'Ray of Light', U2's 'Achtung Baby', Prince's 'LoveSexy', and Peter Gabriel's 'So'. There are musical nods to these artists, and others. In terms of style, there is pure pop celebration here, in the form of songs like "Listen All You People", "Tuning of Violins" and the first single "On the Verge..." "Casey" proves that melancholy, yearning lyrics don't have to be stuck on ballads, but can be sung over up-tempo synth-pop to heart-wrenching effect. In tracks like "Bombs Up in My Face" and "Me, Myself and (I)" Hayes is channeling Prince at his funkiest best. To be honest, any 11 of the tracks could have been released as an album, and would have made a great record. But by giving himself room to explore musical avenues, develop his themes, and (dare one say it) nudge the whole thing towards being a concept record. Hayes has managed to craft an album of intricate narratives and personal confessions that simultaneously document his arrival at peace within himself. He has created something that really demands to be listened to, that hooks you and completely seduces you. The UK's NME Magazine called him a genius. They weren't wrong.

The thing about Kruder and Dorfmeister that makes one perk right up with attention is not so much the content of their masterful mix of acid jazz/trippy ambient/drum & Bass. It is their technique. Unhurried, genuine and subtle, they have comfortably and effortlessly outclassed the myriad collection of good electronic music out there and created a niche, a perfect hybrid between modern day electronica and trip-hop and Drum & Bass which is so sexy, evocative but oh so SERENE, that anyone claiming to be a fan of this format of music can only marvel at the effortless complexity of this CD. None of their tracks typify this more than track 2 on disc one. Stunning in its simplicity but at the same time leaving the listerner enchanted and intruiged! It operates on an underlying level of chilledness with such unhyped ease that one feels a solidarity with the ethos and constitution of the artists seldom evoked by other artists. They enjoy freaking out in the most passive way possible. I enjoyed the first CD more as it was more experimental, flirting with everything from Depeche mode melancholy to rap hype to delicious drum & Bass. WOW! If I could find a club that varied in its experimentation but maintained the underlying essence of juicy acid jazz, I'd be nowhere else. Let this CD serve as a timeous notice to club owners out there. There is an under-exploited but potentially huge market out there! The best of it is that I haven't heard any of their other stuff.... Well, not yet anyway!

When I heard Juno Reactor was coming out with a new album I was very excited. From the taste I got from the Pistolero single it looked very good. The CD isn't bad. It's not their best (Beyond the Infinite is, in my opinion), but it is good.
It starts off with Pistolero which is a very interesting mix of synthesized sound and music from spaghetti westerns. All in all, they pull it off and it sound really good. The second track is a harsh sounding track with frenetic, tribal-sounding drumming. It's good too. Track is a calmer, bass-driven, low-key track that is a well-placed change of pace.
Track 5 is my favorite. It's what I've come to love about JR and has the same energy that dominates Beyond the Infinite. Track 7 falls into this category too and is another highlight of the album.
Tracks 8 and 9 are also calmer. 8 is almost ambient and 9 seems strongly influenced by God is God from Bible of Dreams.
Juno Reactor has never sat back and rested on the success of prior albums. This one is no exception. They experiment with new things and definately are continuing moving forward. Shango is enjoyable, but I don't know if they will ever top Beyond the Infinite. If you enjoy anything by JR, you will like Shango too.

Amazing, Simply amazing. From start to finish, the self-titled sophomore album rocks. I was a huge fan of the After Dark LP and thought they went wrong with their debut album. They more then make it up with this effort. Almost every track, except the slower ones which still are great, break out with great rifts and melodious drum beats. If you are a fan of Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Bayside, and any of the screamo bands, you will fall in love with this CD. My personal favorites would have to be degenerates, the deep end, pistol to my temple, holding on, and free again. The slower goes without saying and watch me bleed are also good songs.

"Scary Kids Scaring Kids have spent the last three years touring and cultivating one of the most rabid fan bases in rock n' roll. Their debut album The City Sleeps in Flames has gone on to sell over 100,000 units to date.Admired by critics and fans alike for the band's heaviness coupled with a warming melodic sensibility The City Sleeps in Flames quickly became a hard driving favorite album for music fans in the new alternative rock community. Scary Kids Scaring Kids is famous for its stage antics and powerful two guitar assault.Word of their live show spread throughout the community which caught the eyes and ears of many big bands and in turn landing high profile tours with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Silverstein, Emery, Funeral For a Friend and Warped Tour. In April 2007 Scary Kids entered the studio to record their self-titled sophomore album with multi platinum producer Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Dashboard Confessional, Pearl Jam, Good Charlotte). Don's production led the band to a newfound confidence and distinctive mature sound. The record shows that the band can seamlessly go from punk/hardcore indie darlings to mainstream rock n' roll music makers. "

A Hundred Days Off Review

I'm always amused by the so-called "true fans" who only want their favorite bands to produce the same album over and over again. Sure, "Second Toughest in the Infants" was and is a great album...but whatever happened to judging an album on its own merits? You can't compare AHDO to 2nd Toughest, because, quite simply, the albums are 6 years removed. Would any Underworld fan really be happy if the group HAD produced the same album 3 different times, just because it did well critically? What artists worth their salt write music for CRITICS?? I am quite pleased with Underworld's new direction, actually. "2 Months Off" is a bright and cheerful barnburner, and a great choice for a single (the video for it was just perfect)...and the final percussion break left me wanting more, in a good way. "SolaSistim" blew me away as well, although in a different sense. I'd really like to hear the group try an all downtempo album after hearing that song.
It sounds to me like Hyde and Smith are using Emerson's departure as a launching point for new ideas (good or bad), which I always welcome from any artist...it's just unfortunate that the majority of listeners will always be comparing this current incarnation of Underworld with its early years. I loved Beaucoup Fish (God bless Jumbo!), and I love A Hundred Days Off...and I could care less what anyone else thinks. If musicians constantly lived in the past, music would certainly be boring, eh?

Elements of Life Review

Elements of Life

Tiësto's "Elements of Life" is a testament to his mastery of the studio and ability to collaborate with other artists. It features several big name vocalists (including the awesome trance diva JES) as well as his signature "epic" sound on tracks such as Ten Seconds Before Sunrise. However, the album loses some steam somewhere in the middle due to not dabbling in "new" sounds.
During the progress of the album, the album uses the same "genre", that being a crisp, clean upbeat trance sound that can be best described as "artistic commercial trance with pop hooks".
The only time that Tiësto takes any risks on this disks is on the track Carpe Noctum (and a couple other tracks, which will be mentioned shortly). This track starts out with a simplistic but catchy bass driven progressive house beat. It then grows as drum patterns are thrown onto it and finally it takes full form with some smooth, dreamy classical Tiësto trance synths. And in the end, this track in particular is nothing original. It sounds similar to Tiësto's "Traffic". Still, Carpe Noctum is strangely addictive . Perhaps it's similarity to "Traffic" is what makes it so enjoyable. Maybe its safe to say that we WANTED at "Traffic 2.0", and Tiësto has delivered.
Another track that features some diversity in sound is the epic "10 Seconds Before Sunrise", which is arguably the best track on the album. This song features all of the things you would expect from an opener on a Tiesto album. Big production, world music sounds, flowing drum loops, string instruments and a beautiful blending of all of the previously mentioned with some top notch trance synths. There are also some choruses thrown in for good measure. This song would make a great opener to a "In Search of Sunrise" CD, which I am sure that's what Tiësto was thinking when he made this song. Just look at the name! If not, then he might have made this song as a homage to his seemingly favorite mix compilation series.
Tiesto also tries something slightly different on the third to last track, "Dance for Life". This song however is nothing new to the scene, as it was previously released last year. The song still is a welcome addition to the album, as it was a somewhat difficult to track down single beforehand (unless you bought it off of a music download website such as [...]). The song comes off something like a progressive house song due to the weird notes that open it up. Maxi Jazz' vocals are odd as well, making this song unique. Critics of this track (and Tiësto in general) will not be impressed with the inclusion of this track, but fans will be delighted to finally have it on a mainstream CD release.
The penultimate track, "Elements for Life" is also a slight deviation from the "pop trance" course that this album goes on. This song is another "epic, big production" song in the Tiësto fashion. It however features some really weird, almost Moog sounding synthesizers inside it. If it had to be compared, it sounds like an electro take on his remix of Adagio for Strings. Similar in fashion and construction, but ultimately they are not the same song.
As for the remainder of the album, the ratings are across the board. The first single for the album "In The Dark" sounds passionate and features some great vocal work by Christian Burns. Unfortunantly, Burns and Tiësto did not seem to put much thought into the lyrics, so they sound a little cliché. This is especially emphasized towards the end of the song when Burns just starts repeating the chorus over and over again (with successively less vocal strength.) Still, the song features some very catchy and fast paced melodies and trance synthesizers, so it comes off as decent. It still could have used some more inspiring lyrics.
Tiësto' work with JES on "Everything" is hard to hate, especially since JES has such a wonderful voice. Tiësto and his crew did a very good job making a song to compliment her voice. Yes, her voice is the main thing going on in this song. But to clarify, there is still some good instrumentation going on in this song. Personally, I find this song more enjoyable than JES' work with Gabriel & Dresden on "As the Rush Comes" (but that might just be a personal bias coming from being a Tiësto fan).
Final picks that are worth a listen are Tiësto's newest collaboration with BT on "Break My Fall", the instrumental "Bright Morningstar" and if you still haven't heard it, the remix of "He's a Pirate".
Suffice to say, Tiësto's "Elements of Life" is a good disk. Its a shame that it lacks some bigger surprises, but it still shows its strengths when it comes to the things we've come to expect from Tiesto - Big production and great collaboration with other artists. If anything, hopefully on his next artist album, Tiësto will take another stab at "industrial" sounding Trance like on "In My Memory" or just totally surprise us with something we haven't seen him do yet.
