Alive 2007 Review

I've always liked Daft Punk, for me, but their albums never stay in rotation for more than a couple weeks without getting old. This live cd, on the other hand, is absolutely amazing-- I've had it for a few months now, and it still blows my mind.
You really feel the energy of the crowd in these songs, and you feel like you're right there if you close your eyes. I've heard the live show is "the best concert anyone has ever been, or will go, to", in the words of a friend. This album does a pretty good job of getting that point across.
The remixes of the songs are fantastic-- the melodies of different songs intertwine wonderfully. My favorites on the album are "Robot Rock/Oh Yeah" and "Television Rules The Nation/Crescendolls". Seriously, though, you won't find a fault with any of the songs. They're all great, easy to love, and even easier to dance to.
If you're a fan of electronic music, you HAVE to buy this. It's easily the best house/electronic album I've heard in a long time.

Hot August Night NYC (2 CD's) Review

Hot August Night NYC (2 CD's)

Neil Diamond has recorded many live albums over the years, including the original "Hot August Night." As blasphemous as it may seem to some, this collection, "Hot August Night NYC," is the greatest of Neil's live albums. It has a stronger collection of songs than the original "Hot August Night." It has much less of the self-indulgence that has occasionally marred some of his other live recordings. Neil is in great voice and is clearly energized by the New York crowd. His appreciation of and graciousness to the fans is clear throughout. He does a marvelous job of integrating some of his wonderful new songs into the show. For me the highlight is his gorgeous and moving version of "Man of God" from the "12 Songs" CD that then takes us into "Hell Yeah" from the same CD. The first time I heard the original version of "Hell Yeah," I recognized it immediately as another Neil Diamond anthem song and wondered how it would play in concert. It plays beautifully. And "Man of God" is done in a more uptempo and gospel style than we find in the "12 Songs" version. The way it is performed here makes this one of Diamond's all-time great performances. It is remarkable that Neil Diamond, who has been with us for so long, should not only continue to do outstanding work, but do some of the best work of his career. He is now on a run of three straight fabulous CD's: "12 Songs," "Home Before Dark," and now "Hot August Night NYC." No Diamond collection is complete without these three CD's. And in this one, we get to hear a master entertainer still at the top of his craft.

This box set is fantastic. Coheed and Cambria really outdid themselves and put together something really special for their fans. Being one of those lucky fans, I was at all 4 nights in NYC and so having this box-set was a must-have for me. It did not disappoint!
The box set is very large and looks almost like a board game. The dragonfly is actually bigger than I expected, and the detailing is very cool.
The book has a collage of pictures of the band, tickets, old concert fliers and photos (I must digress....it was awesome to see the old Juliana Theory tour flier from when they played in Old Bridge...and the 2004 tour sticker with the bloody dragonfly...great shows!)
There's a section in the back for the "Children of the Fence" where, if you ordered during a certain period of time, your name would be in the book. If you did this, finding yourself among all the names is a great feeling! One among the fence!
Each of the 4 nights in Terminal 5 are on their own DVDs, as well as on CD. The DVDs are extremely well put-together. The sound quality is great, the way it is filmed reminds me of a movie or music video-awesome quality. There is also an 80 minute documentary that even for someone like me who has followed the band for 8 or so years, I learned new things about the band I never knew before!
There are also special scenes with all of the web casts they had done talking about toughest album to play, most fun album to play, etc. They were played online during Neverender on the band's website/myspace. The opening acts from Mic Todd, Richard Christy (I think that was his name), Davenport Cabinet, and Claudio introducing Night of Living Dead playing during NWFT are also on there, as well as some clips from the other 3 Neverenders (Chicago, LA, and London).
There are so many great things to say about this box set. Basically, if you are a fan of Coheed and Cambria, and you went to these shows...even if you didn't go to these shows but wanted to or wanted to feel like you're at a live show...this box set has it all and more. I laughed, I cried (not even a little ashamed to admit it...if you watch the documentary, you may shed a tear or two as well), I sang along. I love this box set. You will too!

This is my favourite film, I bought the video a couple of years ago & have watched it seemingly hundreds of times because it is pure fun. Thurston really became a hero for more resons than the excelelnt music w/ raps & rants like "tonight will be the night that the skies will open & spray forth the divine hand & poisoned finger & say everybody 'you're not just a duck, you are human, YOU ARE HUMAN! go forth, go forth & thrash'" which then segues into Negative creep by Nirvana. Kim & J talking is amusing. Dave & Krist pouring wine & fruit everywhere & Kurt being quiet generally except for ramming himself into the drums & spraying SY w/ beer. The onstage performances are generally brilliant, Thurston almost hangs off the front of the stage @ 1 point. Also notable is Courtney's 1st step into fame thanks to an mtv creew showing up. There's a lot more moments I could mention but you should watch it for yrself. Also recommened for Nirvana fans wanting to find out about Sonic Youth [you need to]. Oh whoever mentioned that 1st Teen Spirit performance that was in the Hype! film which focussed on Seattle whereas this here is more broad.

Absolutely great Hagar footage.
Why someone who is NOT a Hagar Fan, would view this DVD is absolutely beyond me.
So for the one star dork who asked the question why can't old gezers like Sammy get out of the way........Well, why watch the concert in the first place?
A Hagar fan who DOESN'T like this, well, I can respect, if not agree with that. But if you don't like Sammy in the first place, why waste your time?
Sam man touches on many great hits that HAGAR fans want to see. He rips loose on the guitar quite a bit so that adds to the project.
St. Louis must be an absolute AWESOME city to see Hagar play in as the audience is comepletely into the show. I've seen Sammy before, but never in St. Looo. Given I'm a die hard Rams fan, I need some stars to align for me and make a trip to kill two birds with one stone.
If you ARE a Hagar fan, you WILL love this DVD. If you are NOT a Hagar fan, you probably won't. But then agian, why would you bother?
Hat's off to the Red Rocker!

Sammy Hagar And The Wabos - Livin' It Up Live! - Caught live in St Louis on their sold out 2006 US tour, Sammy And The Wabos bring down the house with songs from their new album, Livin' It Up, as well as some of Sammy's famed solo work. Joined on stage for the second half of the show by legendary Van Halen bassist, Michael Anthony, the band rips through some of rock radio's classic tunes. From "I Can't Drive 55" and "Mas Tequila" to "Finish What You Started" and "Right Now", it's one big Cabo party with the "Red Rocker"! December 6, 1978-it might have started before then but I'll never forget Sammy opening for Ted Nugent at the Checkerdome in St. Louis.Opening acts aren't supposed to have the audience in the palm of their hand but Sammy sure did.His honesty and sincerity captivated the audience. The relationship between this artist and this city would never be the same.Almost 30 years later Sammy is still honest, still sincere and now more than ever, holds the St. Louis audience in the palm of his hand with a shot of Cabo in the other. Sammy fans everywhere just want to know, "What is it with Sammy and St. Louis?"It could be the relationship between Sammy and KSHE radio which dates back to the early 70's and the Montrose days.It could be all of the great solo albums. It could be the days with Van Halen.I think it's a combination of all of the above magnified by the sweat and energy of 33 plus shows that over 500,000 diehard fans have witnessed in this city.Whatever this "thing" is between Sammy and St. Louis it's real, it's heartfelt and spiritual to a degree.Once you watch the DVD you might understand. Favazz--KSHE/St. Louis Songs: Miss Tequila, Mexico, There's Only One Way to Rock, Rainy Day Women (#12/#35), The Girl Gets Around, Rock Candy, I'll Fall in, Love Again, I'll Take You There, Sam I Am, Little White Lie, I Can't Drive 55, Heavy Metal, Good Enough, Summer Nights, Right Now, Finish What You Started, Best of Both Worlds, Fight for Your Right, Cabo Wabo

Armin Van Buuren: Armin Only - Imagine (2008)
Average Reviews:

The Ahoy 2007 DVD was by far one of the best trance home-productions ever made by any DJ or Electronic Recordhouse (even surpassing Tiƫsto's earlier works...which, in my opinion, have been superb). However, this 2-Disc set is absolutely perfect. It's just as good as what one expects from Armin's work, and may I dare say it's even better. The lights, the sound, the invited artists and Live performances, the production development...AMAZING.
The tracklist is available anywhere around the internet; a simple google search could get you the 31 tracks with title and artist name. Speaking of which, the selection is "The Works". You get a bit of the classic Armin [Shivers (although it's a new amazing remix by Alex M.O.R.P.H.), Rush Hour, Burned with Desire, Zocalo, and Sail...among some others] amazingly mixed and incorporated into Armin's new beats (Hold on to Me, Going Wrong, Imagine, etc...). Van Buuren also features some great new and complementary talent that goes perfectly along with the rest of his work. You'll be rocked by every face you've come to appreciate from Armin: Vocal-Trance, House-Trance, House, Progressive-House, Progressive-Trance...yeah, it's a perfect swirl of Trance and House.
The first disc is obviously the main presentation. Disc #2 is more of a Bonus CD. You get access to a very well prepared Behind the Scenes of Armin 2008, Music Videos, Deleted Scenes and Videos, and photos.
Armin fans, DJs, trance-heads, electronica genre admirers, or anyone who's just started building up their taste for delightful yet euphoric Electronic music, this is a MUST HAVE production. You'll have your headphones on for a while, as well as your stereo. Great play-on for a night or house party.
Long Live Armin.

Meat Loaf: In Search of Paradise (2008)
Average Reviews:

First off, I give this 3 1/2 stars. They don't have a half-star option.
This is a documentary about the rehearsal stages and first several shows of a Meat Loaf tour through Canada to promote Bat Out Of Hell 3. The case is VERY misleading, as it lets you think you are going to see a full concert and even lists songs in the setlist of the concert as if you're going to see them. YOU WILL NOT SEE A WHOLE SONG. YOU WILL SEE SNIPPETS OF SONGS. The majority of the footage is Meat dealing with the various details of tour. There's quite a bit of attention paid to the Paradise On The Dashboard light controversy: the alleged indecency of him performing the number with Aspen Miller due to her perceived age. (She was 28 at the time of filming/touring.) Maybe even too much time is devoted to this. It honestly felt like this was the theme of the entire documentary.
We also see pieces of Meat's rituals before a show, and it shows the extreme level of perfection he demands from his crew, but mostly from himself. He is hardest on himself and never seems satisfied. This isn't the usual Rock Star ego trip, he continues to push himself to be better, louder, faster, and the best. He does so at a toll on his health, and we repeatedly see him pass out after shows.
I would recommend this to hardcore Meat Loaf fans, but casual fans or someone expecting to see a full or at least partial concert could easily come away disappointed.

Actor, performer, and multi-platinum rock icon Meat Loaf reveals surprising shades of himself - and a fertile creative mind in constant flux - in this intimate and highly entertaining theatrical feature documentary that was celebrated as an official selection of the 2007 Montreal World Film Festival. The time is early 2007, one of the most stressful in Meat Loaf's career, when he is about to launch his most ambitious tour ever: an 18 month long marathon to support Bat Out Of Hell III, the final album of the legendary Bat Out Of Hell trilogy. His exhausting, and often poignant, journey takes him from rehearsals in Burbank, California through the first leg of his tour through Canada. Along the way, an unexpected media controversy erupts over the staging of one of his songs - a controversy that raises questions about his art and its ability to mature and transcend as it traverses multiple generations - bringing into focus the drive (and demons) that have fueled his over-the-top stage persona for almost 40 years.

For Aeons Past Review

For Aeons Past
Average Reviews:

If I do say so myself...2010 is turning out to be quite a year for metal. Despite a few regrettable tragedies (Dio, Peter Steele), the actual music being released is some of the most exciting since the boom of the summer of 2008. New albums by Dark Tranquillity, Kalmah, and Nevermore, among others, have shown their quality, with many more, including by the likes of Soilwork, Symphony X, and Iron Maiden on the way. And with all these established bands there have also been a few new arrivals, the most promising of which in my book is the Swedish/Finnish supergroup Solution .45. Best known for their lead vocalist, the much revered former Scar Symmetry front man Christian Alvestam, the release of Solution .45s debut has been the subject of much hype for Scar Symmetry fans as well as the melodeath/prog metal communities in general. My expectations were high, and I'm proud to say they were surpassed. For Aeons Past may be the album of 2010.
S.45 is sometimes criticized for being too reminiscent of Scar Symmetry, an understandable criticism considering the connection between the two bands as well as being the most well known and stylistically similar of Alvestams post SS projects. Like Scar Symmetry, this is definitly the "21st Century" model Scandinavian melodeath in the Soilwork tradition - clean and harsh vox mixed, atmospheric keyboards, a neoclassical bend in the guitar playing and an overall epic song construction - all elements one can indeed find in Scar Symmetry. However, upon closer inspection S.45 do set themselves apart. While Scar Symmetry tended be a bit more straightforward, S.45 ventures more obviously into prog metal territory. Shifting time signatures and general more technical arrangements are present. At the same time, like Scar Symmetry, there is an excellent cohesiveness of song that is highly commendable. Perhaps this is the direction people were expecting from Scar Symmetry to follow up Holographic Universe...nonetheless, the album is excellent. And in addition to Christian, all of the members are at the top of their game. The riffs are rock solid, the solos are mindbogglingly technical and beautifully melodic, and the drums are tight and punishing and the bass...is inaudible most of the time, but it is clear that Alvestam put together a worthy group of musicians, none of which I had been aware of before, but are definitely worthy of backing him up in this venture.
As far as the songs go, every single track on "For Aeons Past" is solid and unique in its own right. Its very difficult to pick a favorite, but the absolute highest achievement of the groups potential is unquestionably the 16 minute epic album closer "Clandestinity Now"...like the Symphony X or Edge of Sanity epics, it is a track that despite its length and branches of arrangement remains consistently cohesive and at no point tempts one with the skip button. Every other song on the album is great in its own way though, no doubt. The only complaint I could possibly give the album is that it does get a bit homogeneous at times, but especially considering this is a debut this is a minor cause for concern. Given Alvestams known resistance to touring I'm not getting my hopes up for an American Solution .45 tour, but they definitely have the potential to be metals "next big thing", and they certainly live up to the hype they've generated in the underground. Any fan of forward thinking and innovative metal should not be without "For Aeons Past".

Shobaleader One: d'Demonstrator Review

Shobaleader One: d'Demonstrator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the awkwardly titled "Shobaleader One: d'Demonstrator," Tom Jenkinson fully commits to a refinement of the sound he hinted at with portions of 2008's "Just a Souvenir." The big revelation: Squarepusher can write lush, sexy pop songs, and not just every now and then. Here's essentially an entire album of insanely catchy electro-pop without the jazz fusion interludes he's historically been fond of. SO:d reflects a purity of vision that rivals that of "Go Plastic," though musically it inhabits a different universe. Those were willfully dense, abrasive, and thoroughly difficult pieces. These are SONGS.
The album's lead track, "Plug Me In," and "Abstract Lover" are both retro-futuristic slow jamz that should have R&B artists on their knees at Tom's doorstep begging for him to produce. "Synchronize our soul . . baby, that's how we roll . . " he and his vocoder purr in the former. That's as good a description for these two tracks as any . . "synchronized soul." What does that mean? I don't know, but it sounds right.
"Megazine" is getting the most notice, partially because of the video featuring the hoodie-and-LED-mask clad Shobaleader One "band." I wouldn't be surprised if "Megazine" becomes 'Pusher's best-known track ever, as it's a hurtling Daft Punk-style rave up that will have the faceless Frenchmen embarassed they ever released "Robot Rock." It's as catchy as "My Red Hot Car" without the salacious lyrics, and works equally well in the club or through headphones in your bedroom. Even thinking about this track will get your head bobbin'.
"Into the Blue" is a dreamy pop confection that reminded me instantly of Frou Frou's "Let Go." It, more than any other track here, gets more and more addictive with repeated listens. Tom again shows off an impeccable ear for hooks and little background details that keep the track fresh even after dozens of listens. "Into the Blue" follows a classic pop structure, yet is much more complex and nuanced than "A Real Woman," from "Just a Souvenir," for example. If any of the current "It" singers covered this, it would be a monster hit.
The lightest track here is the lush "Frisco Wave," but that's hardly a criticism. It's one of the few tracks here with no lyrics, but Tom still makes prudent use of the vocoder by adding some impossibly beautiful backing vocals to the tail end of what was already a very warm and appealing concoction.
The hidden gem here . . at least the track that snuck up on me . . is "Endless Night." This is what's so great about Squarepusher; this track shouldn't make sense, as Tom spins some lite funk, glassy synths, a hint of speed metal, and squelchy electronica into a true composition. Yet, it's somehow natural. It doesn't feel at all like Tom's showing off.
SO:d started out immensely playful, but ends on a note of menace. "Cryptic Motion" exaggerates the funk of "Endless Night," brings back the robotic vocals, and layers on 80's-style synths that manage to sound both cheesy and creepy at the same time. The closing track, "Maximum Planck," evokes pure dread with its slow, chugging guitar (think Soundgarden's "4th of July") and only shards of melody, until at the 3:50 mark it explodes into 60 seconds of "Steinbolt" style thrash. "Steinbolt" is one of my favorite tracks from "Ultravisitor," but it eventually collapses into confounding avant-noise excess. Here, the cacaphony is brief before Tom takes us in for a gentle landing with some gothic keyboard washes and acoustic guitar. This is a brilliant, unpredictable track to wrap up what was, for the most part, a beautiful but somewhat easy ride.
All in all, an outstanding effort. This is the type of album that works as a cohesive piece, yet each track stands proudly alone. Several are stunners. This might be the one that expands TJ's audience past the die-hards, and it should keep the die-hards breathlessly anticipating his next move. I don't know how many reinventions Tom has in him, but I'm on board.

This is by far the most accessible record Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) has ever made. This was not the original intent, but the result is clear. This record will change the way people view Squarepusher. Having been known as a leader and innovator in Drum 'n Bass and various forms of up tempo electronic music for 15 years, Jenkinson was always able to push the boundaries of the genre, but on ''Shobaleader One: d'Demonstrator'', he is pushing so far beyond his previous releases it is easy to hear why it might take a few listens to register that this is indeed a Squarepusher record. Vocals? R&B rhythms? Heavy synths? These and other un-Squarepusher like elements form what could even be described as 'baby makin' music'. Jenkinson's vast knowledge of rhythm and harmony help to make these songs much more than nu-soul R&B, they are truly an entity unto themselves.

The people who criticize this album definately need to listen AGAIN (or they just hate Chicago's sound). When I first heard this CD I couldn't believe that Chicago pulled it off! These are big band era tunes (40's) that are updated with great vocals, inventive arrangements, and end up sounding like..... well, Chicago. Much better than another power ballad.
Great performances by the guys in the band also. I'm wearing out this CD.

Bob Marley and the Wailers Live at the Rainbow (1977) Review

Bob Marley and the Wailers Live at the Rainbow (1977)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So it falls to me to review this first? This June 1977 concert at London's Rainbow Theater captures the recently reconfigured Wailers ending a European tour to promote the masterful 'Exodus' album. The rare videotaped performances of 'Trenchtown Rock' and 'Rebel Music', and 'Crazy Baldhead', dating from the earlier Wailers repertoire, and performed wonderfully well here, are the treasures of this collection, however. Missed notes on some songs, including the beginning of 'Exodus', and guitarist Junior Marvin's failure to notice his boss Bob about to start singing 'Lively Up Yourself', are minor annoyances, as is the loss of Aston Barrett's famous distinctive bass line in 'No More Trouble', jettisoned in favor of a 'new', harder sound (surely a reaction to the exciting energy of London's 'new wave' summer of 1977). By the way, it always annoyed me that the front cover picture on the VHS and now the DVD editions is most definitely not from this 1977 show, but rather is the same photo that graces the 1975 Live at the Lyceum album. I wish those responsible would show some commitment to historical accuracy, and use a photo from the actual show in '77. The DVD sound and picture are good, considering the age of the videotape source. I purchased my DVD copy of 'Live at the Rainbow' from Amazon France, and it includes an accompanying DVD entitled 'Carribbean Nights', which is an informative and enjoyable look at Marley's life and times. While 'Caribbean Nights' contains no full-length performances, it does contain several exciting if brief film clips of various performances such as the Leeds, UK 1973 show with Peter Tosh. Hopefully these early performances will someday make it onto DVD as well.

Okay, I rushed to get her cd on Tuesday!!!! I was so excited to see what her performance from her last cd would be like.
I WASNT DISAPPOINTED!! Girl has mad skills for real!! She can really sing and her band is on fire. I play the keys, so to see an artist that truly loves music and expresses that love is "lovely" to me. Yes these songs were not the current ones, but it still was the BOMB DIGGITY overall. The way she feels her songs to the point of crying, that surprises me.
I KNOW she knows those songs very well and she has rehearsed so many times but she sings them like it was her first concert performing those songs. She reminds me of Frankie Beverly in concert. That man still sings "we are one" like he just wrote it yesterday. THATS THE REAL THING which is Jill Scott. Oh and she explains what her words mean. I love that about her too!

Armistice Review

Armistice

Sophomore albums are like sequels to great movies. At first you get excited about the prospect of seeing all your favorite beloved characters again. Then you become apprehensive. A thought pops into your head. "The Empire is striking back? Sweet!" Then another. "There's going to be a female Terminator?! Ah, crap!"
Mutemath's latest CD had me saying both. Their first, self-titled, album was nearly flawless. It has yet to leave my CD player. And when it does, it'll be a cold day in hell. So as I frolicked out of Hoodlum's with the CD in my hands, I thought to myself, "Wait... what if they can't do any better than that first album?"
So I set the mood for a fresh listen. I waiting until the evening, rolled the windows of my car down, lit some candles, poured a glass of wine, put on some smooth jazz (then took it off realizing how difficult it would be to hear two CDs at once), and slid Armistice by Mutemath into the CD player.
I was ready to rock. That was my first problem. I was initially let down. This was not the Mutemath I had fallen in love with. There were no catchy riffs, no loud, impassioned vocals, and no instrumental experiments.
But one day, upon my fourth or fifth listen with Armistice in the background, I got it. In a musical epiphany, I realized just how much soul these boys from New Orleans have. You can't rock to this album. You have to get down to it. That can be done with a little less head movement and a little more pelvis.
I realized that Mutemath was able to accomplish one thing twice. They were able to create a fresh album.

Anointed by Alternative Press as 'the #1 band you need to see live before you die,' eclectic and inspired electro-alt MUTEMATH scored in late 2008 with 'Spotlight' (#1 Billboard Hot Singles Sales for two weeks) on the soundtrack album to Twilight. The track now also appears on the group's second album, Armistice. Produced by Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, The Hives), Armistice melds moments of beauty with big hooks and booming vocals. Challenging the limitations of alt-rock, MUTEMATH has rightly earned a reputation as one of modern music's most daring young groups.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence Review

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The cover art is grimy and enigmatic, intimating a sense of violence and aggression. The album's name is bold and maybe somewhat pretentious. What have we here? It seems to be an open invitation for rock critics to assault a haughty progressive rock band. This album seems to fit every critic's definition of "indulgent": a double album, the progressive disposition, and a 42-minute song. And it's Dream Theater.
Direct your derision elsewhere, critics. This may be a strong statement, but I have to venture to say that Dream Theater's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is the most dynamic afflatus of progressive music since Yes' Close to the Edge. The band mines a rich vein of influences and amalgamates them into something utterly intense and inventive. The music in this 2CD set possesses the devastating technical chops we expect from the band, this time directed towards a more experimental release than was Scenes from a Memory. At the same time, Six Degrees encapsulates a sense of brutal beauty and depth, with an assertive and clear artistic vision that defies any standard the genre has ever set.
"The Glass Prison" will probably surprise a few people. It opens the album with a metal fury of frightening velocity. No doubt the heaviest thing the band has ever done, it is dark, heavy, punishing, and despairingly intense. Because of its pulverizing heaviness and its lyrics (which deal with fighting alcoholism), comparisons may be drawn to "The Mirror". But this song is far more brutal and poignant (and at 14 minutes, it's twice as long). The song's speed is forcefully carried by Portnoy's alien-hummingbird double-bass, as well as Myung's chiming bass arpeggios. Vocals by both Portnoy and Labrie are fierce, and Petrucci's solo is desperate, shattering, schizophrenic, and shred-intensive.
Petrucci also proves he is adept with the pen as well as the guitar. His lyrics on "The Great Debate" (dealing with stem cell research) are great -- his use of metaphor and cleverly ambiguous phraseology makes him, I think, progressive metal's best lyricist. (Consider the double-meaning of the "turn to the light" lines). The music accompanying his poetry is equally sophisticated. Samples from news broadcasts flesh out the subject matter. This evolves into fiercely heavy grooves, delicious rhythmic phases and accents (at once evoking Tool and Rush), and slaughtering furies of guitar/keyboard leads. A clever mix puts right- and left-wing arguments on the appropriate side in stereo (cool!).
It's been proven that the band is capable of bone-crushing technical wizardry, but they also command restraint and concisely developed melodic progressions. "Disappear" is the album's shortest song, not quite reaching seven minutes. This one is presented with an avant-garde, Radiohead-like production. It is a frigid requiem frail vocals and the sad, seductive susurration of longing melodies, built around gorgeous acoustic guitar and exquisite pianos. Labrie's lyrics and performance are masterful; I believe the fugitive poetry is perhaps attempting to mask emotions the delicate vocals betray.
"Blind Faith" is an outstanding work of songwriting, musicianship, and vocals. It's one of those "perfect songs." The melodies are so liquidy during the verses (with great synth inflections), but it kicks into high gear for an awesome, rocking chorus with a big hook that doesn't let go. There's hooks everywhere, even in the instrumental interlude, which is technical DT at its best. Petrucci plays a simmering, catchy riff which (I think) is on baritone guitar...it's the best! Buy the album to hear this riff. The keyboard/guitar unison part here is the most difficult they've done. Before this, though, Rudess plays an elegant piano solo...he's so talented, and his touch his beautiful.
"Misunderstood" is a very difficult song to classify...it almost passes as a killer rock ballad but it also sports some trippy jamming that reminds me a bit of King Crimson's weirder moments. Petrucci's lyrics about feeling isolated are great in rhythm and metaphors. After the last imploring chorus, the final few minutes of this track are a crazy, dissonant blend of sounds that mess with the head.
A full review should be devoted solely to the phantasmagoric and discursive 42-minute title track on the second disc. "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" is the band's exploration of mental illness. Each section is devoted to a different person's struggles, gracefully enriching the lyrics with character-specific leitmotifs. This is possibly the band's finest moment, countervailing thrashy metal riffage ("The Test that Stumped Them All") with more melodic, pop-influenced movements ("Solitary Shell"). Individual sections show more effort and detail than the sum total of entire albums, but Dream Theater manages to keep everything very concise and coherent. "Overture" is an exhilarating prelude, formed by a grandiose orchestral section, heated interplay, and stormy guitars; "Goodnight Kiss" is an achingly sorrowful elegy where Labrie's vocals are at their emotional best (beautiful guitar work too); "Solitary Shell" is a major-key, hook-laden piece that evokes Peter Gabriel, while Labrie's vocals soar on the power chorus; "About to Crash (reprise)" is an awesomely infectious anthemic rock piece. "Six Degrees..." is so intense in music and pathos that it virtually blows me away note after note for 42-minutes, leaving me physically weak at the end. Yes, it is long...but it is not a song (or album, for that matter) of nimiety. I don't think there is one immaterial note or second. Heck, to some Dream Theater fans it might even be considered exiguous -- there is considerable restraint here.
All throughout, Jordan Rudess proves he is the most inventive keyboardist in progressive metal. He goes through so many different patches rather than sticking to the same tired strings, organs, and pianos. No one can compare.
When a band releases an album so adventurous, it's always a risk that they will create something so self-indulgent that no one will enjoy it. Just remember: Whenever a work of art attempts to transcend the boundaries of its style, it'll likely alienate those looking for the same old, same old. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is not for those who just want another good "prog" metal album. It is not for those who want another Images and Words. It is for listeners who want to experience the artistic challenge with the band, to celebrate the meaning of "progressive music." There are those who fear that "progress" makes good songwriting null. Have no worries -- Dream Theater's prime songcraft has been polished to an impossible gleam for this album.
Yet again Dream Theater pushes ahead of the pack in terms of creativity and resourcefulness, without ever losing touch with their ability to communicate their sophisticated music to their audience with emotion and sincerity. The kings of progressive metal yet again prove why they are the genre's best band. This release adds another jewel to Dream Theater's crown.

Rust In Peace (Live) (2010) Review

Rust In Peace (Live) (2010)

First off, this was awesome!!!! I remember seeing these songs performed during the "Clash of the Titans" tour back in the 90s, and I'm glad Mustaine chose to do this album in its entirety. Not too many heavy metal albums rank next to this one, and I rank this album as one of the greatest of all time.
The musicianship is second to none. I would go so far as to say this is the best Megadeth lineup, as I think Shawn Drover is the best drummer Dave has played with in a long time (Gar Samuelson was probably the best). He is a solid drummer who can play the all the material. He has the chops and style. Chris Broderick is massive on the guitar. He really can move over that fret board and seems like a natural for all the parts. Personally I like to hear all the original solos played as they were originally written, but I don't mind when someone like Broderick adds his own flare because after hearing his work on "Endgame" I think to myself, "What would he have done with 'Rust In Peace?' Not dissing Marty, just giving respect to Chris.
I gave this 4 stars because of a few short comings. Take my following criticism more like suggestions for the future as I am really a diehard fan of Megadeth, and have been for decades (but I know Dave and Megadeth management will never see this review).
1) The vocals were overdubbed, and it is easy to see. My question is, "why?" Mix as you will, but let the true live experience come full force. The music sounded great, I'm sure the vocals sounded just as good. I have this problem with many live DVDs; don't funk with the mix so much.
2) Backstage footage was skimpy. This would have been a great opportunity to really go behind he scenes and see how the band sets up, check out the equipment, and do some solid up close interviews, especially with the other band members. Also, show some footage of the tour preparation rehearsals when the band was first playing all of "Rust In Peace" in a rehearsal studio (and when Ellefson just came back). The DVD creators could have even re-visted footage from "The Clash of the Titans," and do a retrospective kind of thing. That would have been awesome!! A nice biography would have been great, tracing the history of Megadeth up till now (something quick and creative). And last for this point, fan interviews. The screaming fans showed the energy and excitement, but do something more refined to really get the feel of the fans. Some of those fans came a long way. I would had loved to had heard their stories about Megadeth a bit more in depth. So much more could have been done, and it would have been worth the price hike. I felt the creativity with the DVD was lacking.
And 3) Again, with the bonus footage. I'm a bass player, and I love the drums, and the guitar work on "Rust In Peace" is genre breaking and defining, so why aren't there performance isolation angle options? This would have been great for the Blu-Ray DVD (as all this extra footage would need the space). Show the parts being played live, up close and personal. Dave Mustaine once said in an interview, where he was showcasing his signature Marshall stack, that the best way to learn a guitar part is to watch the actual musician play it (if you want to learn it note for note). This would have been a great opportunity for that to come true. But the bonus material really doesn't hold up to the what other bands produce. I think Megadeth could have taken a lesson from Dream Theater (actually Mike Portnoy) in this regard, and pack the DVD with every possible thing you could imagine, and sell the hell out of it. Mike Portnoy could have lent Shawn Drover his drumcam(s), so we could see his technique, etc. I would have like to see those drum parts, like on "5 Magics" and "Rust In Peace...Polaris." Again, the package could have been for the Blu-Ray only, or make it multiple DVDs, whatever, just give me more. I would have paid the price.
I'm obviously thinking with a fans mind, and maybe some of what I said could not have happened logistically or financially, but I think if minds and the powers that be had sat down and really thought out this process, and looked outside the box to give the fans the ultimate experience then more stuff could have been packed in to the DVD. In the end, the performance was awesome!!!! And for what the DVD offers, the price is right, but it could have been so much more.
Peace,
Fan from 'Back in the day'

The Blue Man Group return to their rock concert experience in their latest DVD, captured during their "How to Be a Megastar 2.0" tour. If you already own "The Complex" much of this material will be familiar as it nearly the same format as the group's previous rock concert tour. That's not necessarily a bad thing. As in "The Complex," "How to Be a Megastar" opens with "Above," which if you've seen/heard from "The Complex" you know is simply an amazing song. The concert presentation is exciting, with a screen obscuring the stage and only shadows of the Blue Men projected on the screen as, one by one, each takes to their PVC instruments to begin the melody, with a swirling of images of the band and the Blue Men as the song launches into guitar, drums, keyboards, bass, and percussion in an explosive cresendo. Awesome. The remainder of "How to Be a Megastar" essentially follows the same progression as "The Complex" with some new material and new rock conert movements. The premise of the tour is the Blue Men have purchased an "updated" rock concert experience manual from an infomercial and are incoporating the new material into the show. The band is amazing, as it was before in "The Complex." I miss the guest vocals of Tracy Bonham and Annette Strean of Venus Hum. Annette was gorgeous and belted out an exciting cover of "I Feel Love" in her unique style in "The Complex" and is replaced on the current tour with a new vocalist. She's fine, but it's hard to follow in the footsteps of Annette and Tracy.
Bonus material includes a music video for "I Feel Love"; a piece of comedy called "Mono Makes a Plea -- Save the TVs" campaign (bemoaning the switch to digital signals which will effect us all...) and finally, and perhaps most importantly, a documentary called "Inside the Tube." It features the founders of Blue Man (Phil Stanton, Chris Wink and Matt Goldman) as they discuss the group, the philosophy of the Blue Man and the evolution of Blue Man from a theatrical presentation to the rock concert experience of "The Complex." It's a fascinating insight; Stanton, Wink and Goldman are extremely intelligent and creative individuals with a lot of passion for what they do. As far as I know the documentary aired only on PBS during a fund raising drive, with the documentary being sold as an incentive gift for new PBS members. If my memory is correct the documentary was being sold for a $75 contribution; now you can watch it for free!
If you already own "The Complex" and are on the fence about purchasing "How to Be a Megastar," I would suggest it primarily for the documentary included in the DVD extras. The DVD also includes a CD version of the concert, so for less than $20 you're getting a DVD and audio CD; a great deal. If you are new to Blue Man I would recommend starting with "Blue Man Group - The Complex Rock Tour Live" to see what you think. I think you will enjoy it.

After playing to capacity crowds throughout 2006 and 2007, Blue Man Group's How to Be a Megastar Tour hits the road again in 2008. The live rock show takes the audience through a satirical workshop on how to create the perfect rock concert experience. In the process, they celebrate, skewer and otherwise deconstruct rock stardom in all of its narcissistic glory. Expanding on the Rock Concert Manual concept from The Complex Rock Tour, this time around the Blue Men download a new how-to manual that takes the audience through a uniquely clever and interactive show that guarantees to deliver hypnotic entertainment for all ages. CD/DVD of Blue Man Group's live concert that is currently touring the world. It will feature a live concert on DVD, a distilled version of that show on CD as well as the documentary Inside The Tube and the video I Feel Love as bonus features.
