Ten Summoner's Tales Review

Ten Summoner's Tales
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Ten Summoner's Tales video was filmed in Sting's Wiltshire home, Lake House, at the time of recording the album. This was his first venture as a video album and the release won a Grammy award in 1994 for "Best Long Form Video Of The Year". The video does appear to have slightly different versions of the songs to those that appeared on the album, and all the album tracks are featured apart from 'Everybody Laughed But You', which was omitted from the US release of album. The video is particularly interesting not just for the live nature of the tracks but for the between song clips of Lake House and it's grounds, the band, and for little snippets like the bass falling over during Love Is Stronger Than Justice. The most interesting clip is arguably of the band performing 'Something The Boy Said', a great song which has reputedly never been played live in concert. END

I have been a fan of Matchbox Twenty for a while now, and when I heard they were making a concert video I was excited. However, concert videos can go either way (good or bad) so I was also ready for the worst.
Thankfully though, my doubts were ruled out as minute by minute of the film rolled on. The visuals are spectacular, with editing that fits the paces of the song really well. Personally, I didn't see a problem with the sound, but maybe the volume was up a bit too much.
The video was successful in placing me front and center (and closer) to a great Matchbox Twenty concert. I almost got to go to the concert on the film (Atlanta), so having missed it I am extremely glad that the director did such a fine a job of catching the feel of one of their live concerts.
I'd already decided this worthy of a five-star rating, but on top of the show itself I also enjoyed the documentary, or behind the scenes of the show (which is where most of the explicitness is.) This is located on Disc 2.
In summary, if you're a fan then it's a must like it was for me; however, it is still one of the best representations that people will get of Matchbox Twenty so I'd say it's just a good buy for the music lover/concert watcher in general.

Live from the River of Dreams (1994) Review

Live from the River of Dreams (1994)
Average Reviews:

This was a pretty good show, but hardly definitive when you consider the depth and breadth of Billy's catalogue. I, and most of his other fans, are still waiting for that one show that encapsulates everything that he is and does. This is a good performance but it didn't take my breath away. For one thing, he's great all by himself. An intimate "VH-1 Storytellers" type of concert might have been more compelling. Alternatively, a show that was about twice as long might have made this release feel more like an entree and less like an appetizer. This will have to do until something better comes along...
You will notice that Billy keeps rolling his eyes during the performance. Initially I thought he was just bored with the whole thing. After watching it a 2nd time I realized that he was trying desperately to avoid looking at the cameras while they were recording. This was probably done at the director's behest. It was an odd choice.
He also sweats profusely at times, and sounds a bit congested early in the show. He may not have been feeling well at the time.
One of the main highlights, and the thing that makes this one a keeper, was Billy's rendition of the Beatles' "Hard Day's Night". He was clearly turned on by the experience and I think the audience fed off of that energy.
Also of note: Billy is seen playing the piano with his arse during one segment, which I found oddly amusing. It kind of reminded me of one of those clasic rock moments such as Chuck Berry's duck-walk or Jerry Lee Lewis' various on-stage antics. He was clearly in the moment, which was great to see.
Final note: The bonus cd that comes with this dvd contains Billy's "All My Life" which is essentially his best Frank Sinatra impersonation. Even the cover photo shows him wearing one of Frank's hats. Be that as it may, there are a couple of live cuts from the Madison Square Garden show which have some real passion to them (particularly "Honesty"). It's a good little collection of songs (3 1/2 stars).

Gorillaz - Phase One - Celebrity Take Down (2002) Review

Gorillaz - Phase One - Celebrity Take Down (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Celebrity Take Down is, at heart, a companion piece to the debut Gorillaz album, offering closure to the first chapter in the band's existence as well as teasers of what's to come and hints of what might have been. Each of the faux-group's first four videos are featured in their entirety, from the still-life anti drama of "Tomorrow Comes Today" to the goofy, horror satire of "Clint Eastwood," and the audio is mixed brilliantly in Dolby 5.1 surround. It really is a whole new experience, taking these videos in with a crisp voice shouting from the front of the room, while the drums hit you from behind and the guitars ring on both sides.
Each video is accompanied by a variety of extras, including early-production versions of the computer graphics used in "19/2000," as well as storyboards and developmental sketches composed for "Rock the House." There's even a full storyboard for an unfinished video, "5/4," that's set to music and fits right in alongside its peers with an offbeat sense of humor and a great, imaginative premise. Rounding out the disc is a vast collection of promotional slicks and sketches of the characters "behind the scenes" at the various music video shoots, interviews with the fictional members of the band, five bizarre short films starring said band members and a lengthy mock-u-mentary about creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. The short films are fun to watch, if just to see more of the characters and Hewlett's visual flair, but lack the substance and dark, self-deprecating humor of the videos, and the documentary is more of the same. The extras are filled to the brim with slapstick comedy and silliness for the sake of being silly, while the videos never seem to force a joke and come off as much more refined and intelligent.
The interface is a little goofy, breaking from the traditional "Play All, Hands Off" nature that dominates today's DVD market. If you ever visited the Gorillaz web site when the band was first starting to take off, this will look very familiar. There's no quick and dirty way to navigate the disc's contents, instead you must navigate between the various rooms of the band members, look for a television screen, open magazine or personal computer, and click on it. You won't know which video you're about to watch or what bonus material you're about to discover until you're already knee-deep in it. It's a clever idea, but I don't know that it works as well on the TV, where people are conditioned to sit and stare, as it did on the monitor, where you're much more familiar with forced interactivity. Some of the allure of the site is missing from this DVD interface, as the developers had to make it obvious which areas were interactive and which weren't, and overall the experience is somewhat disorienting.
Easily enough, this disc is a Gorillaz fan's dream come true. The audio mix and video quality alone are worth a look if you enjoy the band's gimmick in the slightest, which I do, and the attention to every detail of the videos' production is really nice to see. I can live with an underdeveloped interface design and a few out-of-place featurettes.

Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Buffalo Review

Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Buffalo

The Goo Goo Dolls don't have critics turning handsprings over their music. I don't get it. The same critics gushed over the Smithereens and Soul Asylum, and continue to gush whevever Son of Bob and the Wallflowers re-release the same album under a different title and with slightly altered lyrics. Hell, you can even find a kind word about Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 without having to look TOO hard. Media darling John Mayer may be John Rzeznik when he grows up IF he takes a voice lesson somewhere along the way.
They're dangerously close to being the early-21st Century Bon Jovi in that they're a popular group for poseurs to bash as being poseurs, even though you'd never mistake a Goos vid for an aerobics show on the fitness channel. The Goo Goo Dolls just go on writing well, playing well, singing well, moving units and filling arenas. Oh and are one of the few bands able to get through to the MTV generation (in among the lap dancers passing as artists). Without the Goos and precious few others, how many of today's preteens would even know a guitar can be used to make (gasp!) music?
Bottom line, the Goos put the singer and the song out front, and work hard live. This DVD drives that home with a sledgehammer. This is a show that "wouldn't have happened unless a lot of people wanted it to happen" in the words of Goo bassist Robbie Takac. Outdoors, in a monsoon, in their hometown, on the 4th of July. Although the gig yielded the DVD, there were altruistic reasons for the Goo Goo Dolls playing this gig above commercial considerations. The band and the crowd got soaked to the skin, frontman Rzeznik lost one wireless unit after another to the weather, but the band played on, and their hometown crowd stuck it out with them.
Watch the DVD, and you'll be sorry you weren't there to get drenched right along with them.

This is a no nonsense compilation of Radiohead videos. If you love radiohead, then you will love this collection. There are no interviews, no commentary, no background info; it is just back to back videos, which makes it a great tape. Watching the videos in succession, one realizes that this band is artful in all of its endeavors. These videos feel nothing like most of MTV, instead, these feel like mini-movies with an amazing soundtrack.
As the title suggests, it includes seven videos, so the tape is just over 1/2 an hour, about the perfect length of time to listen to some Radiohead with friends while explaining the meanings of "Fake Plastic Trees." The video includes the enigmatic video for "Just" that features a subtitled plot-line which is dropped at the final moment, leaving viewers awestruck with lots of questions. The video also includes "Paranoid Android," "Fake Plastic Trees" "No Surprises," "Street Spirit," "Karma Police" and "High and Dry".

What a treat to discover that Def Leppard was releasing some of their best VHS tapes onto DVD. Although Def Leppard may have been slagged unfairly as a "hair band", they truely had some of the most ear candy songs with a healthy sprinkling of melodic guitar solos from the eighties. I was lucky enough to see a couple of their live shows back then, and if you are a fan of over the top metal concert spectaculars, as there were back then, you will like the DVD (especially if you like lasers). As a fan of DVDs, I particularly enjoy the concert DVDs because of the fact you can virtually turn a room into a concert hall-DVD's are that good. My personal favorite, although all the tunes are great would be "Bringing On The Heartbreak" with the acoustic intro. As a last note, this performance includes the late, great Steve Clark, who along with Phil Collen created that wonderful twin "wall of sound" melodic guitar attack for the Leps. Steve, you are still greatly missed. Lep fans, I hope you enjoy this treat as much as I do whom miss great shows and music from alot of the crap that is out today..........

Motley Crue: Carnival of Sins (2005) Review

Motley Crue: Carnival of Sins (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Motley Crue's new "Carnival of Sins-Live" DVD is the best Motley Crue DVD there is--by far.
This is a two disc DVD,and while it is not perfect,it is really good and solid. It opens up with a very funny and short cartoon on how Motley Crue got back together, and once you have seen the cartoon for the show/Motley Crue's getting back together and going on a tour(which Motley used on all of their shows;I saw The Crue at their concert at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis)the concert on this DVD opens up with a great version of "Shout At The Devil '97"(note that the back of the DVD specifies it as the original SATD,but if you are a die hard Motley fan,you will notice that The Crue are playing Shout '97 at the beginning of this concert that is on this DVD,NOT the original Shout). This whole concert finds Motley Crue playing (mostly)their hits/fan favorites from the 80's("Girls,Girls,Girls","Dr. Feelgood","Live Wire","Ten Seconds To Love","Home Sweet Home",etc.)with the addition of two Motley songs from the 90's("Primal Scream" and half of the ballad "Glitter"),their two new original songs off of their "Red,White, and Crue" anthology album("If I Die Tommorow" and "Sick Love Song")as well as two cover songs("Helter Skelter" and "Anarchy In The U.K."). Note the fact that this concert was made as a film,it looks like a concert that is a movie, and while I would have just preferred a concert, the whole movie/concert concept into one theme was a really good idea that works here. The camera does switch back from the band to the audience too often at the beginning of this concert/film but gets better at focusing on the band towards the end of the DVD,and the live performances of the songs on here are really good(Motley Crue were being honest when they said that they still do have energy left in them)! Nikki Sixx's bass solo and Tommy Lee's drum solo are quite impressive, and not only are Motley Crue able to keep this DVD entertaining by not only playing most of their best material live and doing a great job at it,the midget onstage(who is sort of a mini Vince Neil)is hillarious and is a good supplement to the whole concert/film. It is also pretty cool to see aerialists on stage accompanying "The World's Most Infamous Rock Band"(especially during the live performances of "Girls,Girls,Girls" and "Ten Seconds To Love"). This whole concert/film is pretty cool, but the highlights for me would have to be 1)Nikki Sixx dressed like a mad scientist while he is doing his bass solo,2)Tommy Lee's drum solo and his "fan cam"(wait until you see that),and 3)seeing the guys in Motley Crue dressed as military guys while they perform "Helter Skelter" and "Anarachy In The U.K."(which are the last two songs they performed for the concert that is on this DVD).
There are a lot of bonus feautures on disc two of this DVD,which made me really happy. There is a documentary on Motley Crue's 2005 tour,a behind the scenes look at when Tommy Lee brings his "fan cam" onstage(I'd tell you about it,but it is something that will seem more funny if you buy this DVD and see it for yourself),a short, hillarious, cartoon movie called "Meet & Greet'Disaster! The Movie'Blow It Up" on Motley Crue, and there are three new music videos here. These videos are the time lapse view video for "On With The Show","If I Die Tommorow",and the "clean" video for "Sick Love Song". All of these videos are very cool(especially the time lapse video for "On With The Show",which is both very cool and very creative)and while I am a little dissaspointed that BOTH the clean AND the unclean video for "Sick Love Song" are NOT on this DVD(I am glad to have the SLS video here;it is just there was an unclean video for SLS that you can see very far back on www.motley.com;my point is that it would have helped Crue fans out to watch both the unclean and the clean video for SLS whenever they wanted to instead of going very far back on the Motley Crue website to see the unclean SLS video if they wanted to see it)but other than that,I am not complaining. I like getting to have loads of bonus feautures on disc two of this DVD and getting to see Vince,Nikki,Tommy, and Mick Mars all talk about this whole tour/DVD is really cool(Motley Crue are really the best band there is when it comes to leaving their fans happy). This DVD also has a nice poster that has pictures of Motley Crue from the COS tour accompanying it,which is nice to have here, and despite it's little flaws, this DVD is very awesome overall. Anyway, thank you for reading my review of this, have a great day,and don't forget....Motley Crue rules!!!!

Sadly due to Hurricane Katrina I lost out on the opportunity to see Rob on the Something to Be Tour. But this DVD certainly helps make up for it. Madonna Celebration: The Video Collection (1983) Review

Madonna Celebration: The Video Collection (1983)
Average Reviews:

Before anyone gets on my case, I HAVE THE DVD and am watching it right now.
Let me start off on a positive note, the DVD set contains 47 videos on 2 DVDs. Some good ones are inexplicably omitted (Dress You Up, Oh Father, Bad Girl, Fever, This Used to Be My Playground, Substitute For Love, Nothing Really Matters, American Life, etc) but there is a lot of good material released here for the first time. The audio is generally excellent. The 5.1 track is not really a 5.1 mix, it is simulated and sounds terrible. Stick with the PCM stereo track, it sounds fantastic.
I won't comment much on the content of the videos. They are some of the most famous and influential music videos ever made. This is classic stuff. With the exception of Justify My Love (see below) all of the videos are uncut.
Now on to the picture quality...what the hell happened here? It's not as horrible as some people have claimed, but it is WAY below standard. There are serious compression artifacts throughout all of the videos. Pixellation, smearing, graininess, blotchy color, blurring, interlacing artifacts. It's all there and it looks bad. I am watching the DVD on an upscaling Blu Ray player on a 52" LCD 1080P television. It won't look as bad on a smaller TV, but it still won't look great. I have honestly seen VHS look better than some of the videos. The Immaculate Collection DVD, which was made from a 19 year old master, looks better.
The problem is that someone made the really, really stupid decision to use single layer DVDs instead of the industry standard dual layer DVDs. I suspect this decision was made late in the process to save a few cents and the program was re-compressed to fit in half the space. There is too much compression and too much picture quality lost. I'll bet the original master was for 2 dual layer DVDs and it probably looked very good. It is hard to believe that anyone at Warner quality control approved the picture quality on these DVDs. Didn't Madonna sign off on a release copy??
I thought it might have something to do with the age of some of the videos, but the most recent ones look just as bad. The brand new Celebration video only looks slightly better than VHS quality. And it is ridiculous that the widescreen videos are not in 16:9 format, even the recent ones filmed in 16:9 HD are in letterboxed 4:3.
There really is no excuse for this to happen, especially from a company as large as Warner and an artist as big as Madonna. Using single layer DVDs could have only saved them a few cents. On a $30 set, that is inexcusable.
I would strongly suggest not buying this DVD until Warner addresses the situation. I think outcry among the fans will (hopefully) cause Warner to do the right thing and release a corrected version on dual layer discs.
UPDATE - One more thing, the video for Justify My Love is CENSORED! This video was widely released uncensored as a video single in 1991 and sold millions of copies. And NOW, 18 years later, it is censored?? Just unbelievable.
Also, the Amazon description claiming the DVD has "unedited and never before seen footage of 'Justify My Love'" is completely false. There is no new footage at all. In fact, you actually see less because of the censorship.
If I could split my rating, it would be 4 stars for content and 1 star for quality.

This DVD is 4 hours of pure bliss. It features the Live On St. Patrick's Day concert, except for the songs Which Side Are You On, Fortunate Son, Dirty Water, and Nutty (Bruin's Theme). The mini-feature film "65 Days Of Hell" gives you an idea of what life is like on the road for the DKM's. You might be disappointed in the sound quality of some of the live shows featured in this film, but it's worth taking a look at. In the feature called "Labor Day Documentary", you'll hear the DKM's perform an acoustic version of Boys On The Docks. This DVD also features most of their music videos from "Barroom Hero" to "Gonna Be A Blackout". There's more, but I'll leave you to find out what else on it.

...the definitive "Best of" DVD, "I'm Only Looking", which came out in 2004. That DVD has ALL of this one's twenty videos, PLUS five more -- including BITTER TEARS and the controversial and sexy TASTE IT video. "What You Need" doesn't have any of the wonderfully insightful commentaries, live footage, remix videos, montages, interviews and photogalleries of "I'm Only Looking". I'm still giving this product four stars because I could never completely trash INXS or their inspired, infectious videos. Plus, with this collection, you're definitely getting your money's worth -- Fifteen bucks is nothing for twenty great videos -- and NEED YOU TONIGHT/MEDIATE are worth the price alone. But that said, you can get twice the bang for your buck by getting last year's release, which costs roughly ten bucks more.
Why are they releasing this scaled down version? Perhaps to give new fans a taste of the glory of INXS before "ROCK STAR: INXS," the new reality show starts up in July. I guess it's a good thing for those who like INXS but aren't dying to know every little detail, but if you're an old school fan, skip this and go for the meatier DVD.

This is the first musician DVD that uses a different formula in its presentation. I am used to the same old stage performance and no/or minimal backstage footage. This is the first DVD on a band/musician that I can honestly say I felt apart of the tour. It never slows down, from country to country we see a brief look of its enviroment and people, then we get to meet and hang with Eminem and his posse D12. The DVD's style is MTV driven. With Video footage of his interviews, and What seems like film covering the stage performances and crowds enthusiam for him.( which looks like MTV went along for the ride.) Seeing the footage from plenty of MTV news and interviews.
I must say I think this DVD was necessary for the critics and press to really see who and what Marshall is all about. He is a well spoken individual in each and every interview, something we know nothing about? I for one have never seen an artist look as big as he does in this DVD/documentary. There are scenes where it looks as if he is performing in soccer arena's, some 80,000 fans plus. And to make it all worth having, fan or not...The segment with Eminem and DIDO are priceless. Hearing Dido and Eminem talk about each other and how they met, and then moving directly into the live peice was brilliant. I recommend this highly. As a fan or not you are seeing a new look in behind the scenes and on a tour. The producers of this have set a new bar for what fans really want to see.
