(More customer reviews)The surprise success of "At Budokan" bumped this album, which was already complete, to the back burner while the hits ran their course. Likely because of a budding backlash from the post Budokan overexposure and increased expectations, "Dream Police" took an unjust drubbing at the time. But it was really the sound of the band evolving. The almost disco thump of "Gonna Raise Hell" and the nightmare vision of the title track proved Cheap Trick still had the brains, "Way Of The World" and "Need Your Love" provided the brawn.
It was just that the band had become so competent that some of the edgy charm had slipped away. "Voices" was the kind of ballad that Cheap Trick might not have been able to pull off prior to this, and there were a few who viewed this kind of open balladeering as selling out. They missed the point.
Cheap Trick was exploring their range on "Dream Police." Be that in Robin Zander's polished vocal on "Voices" or in that Tom Petersen took to the mike for the stunning "I Know What I Want," "Dream Police" became a showcase for the boys from Rockford IL. If you compare the Tricksters' sound here to new wave acts like Blondie and the Cars that were now in the same arena (Blondie's "Eat To The Beat" arrived roughly the same time as "Dream Police" and covers a lot of the same ground), you'll see how "Dream Police" remains an excellent album from a band in their prime.
For the bonus tracks, I actually like the live material, particularly Tom's live stand on "I Know What I Want." The "no strings" version of the title cut is a misnomer, essentially it's just a demo. Regardless, "Dream Police" is a great record, and I am glad to have the brighter and better remaster.

London Suede - Introducing the Band Review

(More customer reviews)First off, I am a huge Suede fan, so my low rating is not because I dislike the group. Quite the contrary, Suede is my favorite group. I've seen Suede in concert, own all of their CDs, and can tell you that this DVD does them no justice. My four biggest complaints:
1.) The band is not anywhere near its best on this DVD
Bret sounds off key at times, and doesn't seem to be trying to reproduce his album vocals. Perhaps he was just tired from being on the road, but it just seemed like he didn't care about whether or not he sang the songs well. Simon keep the tempo so poorly on several songs that you think you're listening to a garage band. Add to this that the band is very raw, lacking Ed Buller's studio production polish. The Dog Man Star songs especially suffer from this. While the stripped-down style works on songs like Still Life, most of the time you just want to press mute and watch the DVD while playing the CD instead.
2.) The camerawork is horrendous
There is no use of dollies, cranes, or tracks, but rather everything looks like it was shot on a hand-held home camcorder. The lighting is very bad. At times we can't even see the band because everything is so dark. There are no inventive camera angles except for a quick aerial shot near the beginning. During the concert we are forced to watch way too many crowd shots (I never could understand these) and the films which play in the background. This especially seems pointless considering that all the films are included in their entirety on the DVD. Call me weird, but during a concert, I want to see the band, not the crowd, and certainly not the background video. I would blame this on the editor, but quite honestly, the cameramen should not have even given the editor the option to choose crowd shots and background films over band footage.
3.) The audio is even worse
The crowd drowns out the band and the recording is absolutely horrible. I've heard Suede bootlegs with better audio than this DVD. I wonder if there was any effort at all to improve the sound quality when manufacturing this DVD, or if they just popped in the VHS version and a blank DVD and pushed RECORD.
4.) The editing is worse still
You would think it common sense that during a guitar solo you'd get to see the guitarist, but not here. Every time Richard has a great solo (like on Metal Mickey, The Asphalt World, or Animal Nitrate), rather than get to see his fingers do their magic, we are instead treated with watching Bret clap his hands, slap his arse, jump up and down, or do all three. Now I do consider Brett to be a formidable performer and it is quite entertaining to watch his stage antics, but during a guitar solo I want to see the GUITARIST!
The funny thing is, I remember watching this concert on VHS many years ago when it first came out and actually liking it. I guess that was before I saw Suede in concert and saw how good they were. I'm also guessing that I probably chalked up all its shortcomings to the VHS format. Unfortunately, the DVD is no improvement at all.
If you want a good Suede DVD, buy "Lost in TV". If you want to see a live performance on DVD the way live performances are supposed to be, buy The Cure's "Trilogy". Different band I know, but what a wonderfully performed and recorded concert. It's too bad "Introducing the Band" wasn't done better. Suede is great live, but you'd never guess it watching this DVD.

Three Sides Live Review

(More customer reviews)There are two versions of Genesis' 1982 mostly-or-fully live release, "Three Sides Live." The *original US release* of this double-album is, indeed, 3/4 live recordings taken from the band's 1981 tour for "Abacab," with the fourth quarter comprising of five studio leftovers from the "Duke" & "Abacab" sessions (including the Top 40 hit, "Paperlate"). Europe, however, got the five studio tracks released on a separate EP (also called "Paperlate"), with THEIR fourth quarter of "Three Sides Live" filled with more live stuff taken from the "Duke" and "Trick Of The Tail" tours. Got it? Good.If you're a diehard Genesis fan, then both versions of "Three Sides Live" are worth having in your collection. The first 3/4's live that *everybody* gets is an excellent document of the band in 1981, and shows just how powerfully Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and live co-horts Daryl Stuermer & Chester Thompson can rock in concert, and how commanding a singer & frontman Collins certainly is. GREAT performances are everywhere of Genesis favorites such as "Turn It On Again," "Abacab," "Dodo/Lurker," "Follow You Follow Me," "Misunderstanding," and the Peter Gabriel-era classic "In The Cage." If you buy the original US version, then the five studio songs comprising the last quarter of the album will greatly impress: "Paperlate," "You Might Recall," "Me & Virgil," "Evidence Of Autumn" & "Open Door" are all fantastic Genesis songs. These are no inferior outtakes, and they were only left off the original "Duke" & "Abacab" albums simply because there wasn't room for them. If you buy the European version of the album, then the fourth quarter has brilliant, barnburning concert performances of the Genesis prog-rock classics "One For The Vine," "Fountain Of Salmacis," and a glorious two-in-one rendition of "It" & "Watcher Of The Skies" (closing section). So, for the devoted Genesis fan, "Three Sides Live" is a can't-lose purchase either way.Sadly, "Three Sides Live" appears to be temporarily out-of-print (and I DO hope it's only temporary). Still, there are some used copies of both versions that are still available and floating about. Happy hunting, and long live Genesis.

INVALUABLE DARKNESS Review

(More customer reviews)this is a great dvd set from dimmu borgir. it is loaded with live footage, behind the scenes stuff and videos. the only problem i have is that on disc 2 the live wacken show has no sound. i'll be taking my copy back to get it replaced. i hope that this doesn't happen on all copies because the wacken footage LOOKS great. if the sound was there, this dvd would get 5 stars easily
UPDATE : NUCLEAR BLAST IS RECALLING ALL OF THE DVDS. THEY TOLD ME TO SEND IT BACK TO WHERE I BOUGHT IT TO GET A REFUND. THEY ARE PLANNING ON RERELEASING IT LATER WITH COPIES THAT WORK.

Yes the dvd is deceiving in the sense that you think its a concert but it just has a smattering of concert footage but that was ok with me. The Dubliners are a powerful band...MIGHTY. They show us who they are and basically have fun throughout the dvd. Very Enjoyable!! So sit back and have pint and watch a the Dubliners having fun...you will to.

The Mission - Lighting the Candles (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)To Wayne Hussey: Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you for putting such an incredible DVD package together. This is what every Mission fan has been hoping for. Lighting the Candles far exceeds anything I would have imagined. Incredible sound-the live recording is as good as they come. I had feared a 'bootleg' quality but that fear was unfounded. Seriously, the audio is as good as anything U2 would put out. The DTS sound cranks on my home theater system.
And Wayne, Thank you for not mucking up the visual part of the concert with cheesy effects (ala recent live DVD's from David Bowie, Peter Gabriel and Placebo.) The camera work is excellent and really focuses on the playing with edits and cuts at just the right times. You feel like you are in the front row watching this show.
And thank you for giving us several different tracks on the audio CD instead of just an edited version of the DVD track listing.
But as much as I love the live performance, it is DVD 2 that is really special. I really enjoyed your commentary as well as the behind the scenes of the recent MIsh tour as well as the classic clips, footage, pictures etc of the original lineup.
And lastly, thank you for parterning with SPV (Oblivion) to release this special package. This guaranteed good distribution here in the States. It was available on time at both Lou's (the finest music store in Southern California) but also at Tower. I have all ready recommended this to several friends.
Like Aura, "Lighting the Candles" further brings The Mission back into the limelight. For all Mish fans, old and new, this DVD collection is a testament both to the excellent music that comprises the Mission catalogue but to the heart and soul of its leader. It is obvious that this collection was lovingly put together by Wayne, both for himself, as a document to be treasured but also for the fans! Most music DVD's are thrown together by a label and massed produced. But this one, far surpasses anything I have seen before....and I mean by leaps and bounds.

In late 1985 Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams left The Sisters Of Mercy and formed The Mission and in early 1986 embarked on their first European tour, supporting The Cult. They released 2 singles independently, both reaching No.1 in the UK alternative charts, before signing a worldwide record deal with Phonogram (now Universal). In 2003, The Mission continued to play shows around the globe and it was during this time that drummer Steve Spring first played with the band and in April 2004 The Mission filmed and recorded their show in Cologne, Germany for a DVD that is entitled Lighting The Candles and scheduled for release in late August 2005. To coincide, the band will be embarking on their longest European tour for quite some time. (See the dates below.) 2005 sees The Mission at almost 20 years old but the energy that the band exudes from the stage is the energy of a band that is both still vital and valid and imbued with a self belief and confidence born of knowing that, for the first time in years the band line-up is stable, and their rightful place is amongst the all time greats.

Toto - 25th Anniversary (Live in Amsterdam) (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)Not much to add to what has already been said at long and at large from this mega band. If you're here, you probably know a lot about them. Even so, I can only recommend you to get this DVD if you don't have it...
Why should I bother, would you say, if I already have several of their records (or even all of them) ? For lots of reasons. First, the sound is amazing. I played this on my system thinking that it would be fine. It's not, it's outstanding. Also, the filming is excellent. No blurry shots, no silly angles, no focus on who isn't playing. The production is irreproachable. Another reason you should get this is the incredible atmosphere surrounding the concert. I was trying to see the people in the crowd, and to my surprise, the people there range from 20 to 50 (and apparently a majority of 30ish). In the States, Toto doesn't get any airplay, doesn't perform much, and they seem to be viewed as fossils, remembrance of the west coast style of the 80's. Not so in Japan or Europe, where they are always welcome and fill in large theaters. Amazing, don't you think ?
On stage, you have Bobby Kimball with the rest of the band and two backup musicians. Bobby is like the rest of the regular members. With wrinkles, but in great shape. What a voice! Simon Phillips is probably second best to Jeff Porcaro, Paich shows he can play anything from classic to blues and funky (we already knew that), Mike Porcaro, even though he's not Verdine White, Stanley Clarke or Mark King, is very passionate in his playing, and Luke is... well, just in case you still wondered, the true leader of the band. Just look at how everyone is positioned. The lead singer is on a second row podium half of the concert and Luke is the one walking around. He even gets to play a piano solo with David Paich having fun watching him from behind. Yet, no doubt at who is the leader there... The two cover versions ("While my guitar..." and "Bhoddisatva") are examples of what covers should be. Majestic, incredible. And with special words from Luke to his brothers George and Jeff (to me, the best drummer ever). The band shows they master all styles, from Hard Rock to Jazz, Pop, Blues, Folk, you name it.
The only thing a bit annoying is the sometimes quick blending of some stellar tracks (99 deserves more than a few notes), but they have been doing this in concert lately. All the tracks are either blended or follow each other with almost no timeout. Be ready because you're in for a two hour visual and musical treat !!
Don't miss the two bisses : home of the brave and White sister. Good, old powerful rock'n roll. By the way, I've seen this dvd several times, and I just can't help getting goose bumps on two instances : when they play I won't hold you back, and when Bobby Kimball does his solo stuff. I don't know if that can get any better. What I do know is that I will do all I can to attend their next concert. I'm going to their website to check that out. In the meantime, let's enjoy this super dvd.
P.S. I really agree with three messages the fans in the crowd show during the concert : "never enough Toto", "I could sit here forever", and "Paich for president". Thanks for the music fellows !

Scots Guards Review

(More customer reviews)This is a very good recent recording of the pipes and drums of the 1st battalion, the Scots Guards. The Scots Guards were the first Scots unit to tour the States in 1955, and thus made a very big impression. They were the main word in piping over here before the Black Watch took over the show! The Scots Guards have toured many times since, but unfortunately it has been a while since they have done so. Thats why its good to see a new CD by the pipes and drums which have also not recorded in a while. Under Pipe Major Macdonald, the band sounds very impressive. The playing is sharpe, and the selection of tunes is very good. The medleys are well arranged and played as only a top army pipe band can do. The listener might find it interesting to compare how the band sounds today with the older sounding recordings which are available here as well. Here one can discern that the style of playing has changed over the years. The older rope tension drums have been replaced by the newer Premier drums, which produce a very sharpe and less deep tone. Purists like myself prefer the older sound, as it is more martial in nature. The modern drums are almost jazzy, and do not belong in an army pipe band in my opinion. In years past the Scots Guards use to have two battalions, thus there were two pipe bands, which when combined produced an impressive sound. Today only the 1st battalion remains. Again, the older recordings will give the listener that opportunity to hear the massed pipes of the Scots Guards. The Scots Guards also use the standard double three beat intro for the drums in this CD, instead of the longer single five beat drum roll which normally introduces the pipes in the Scots Guards and Guards regiments as a whole. Its odd that they would do this, almost as if the style of playing was intended to be civilian-like for this CD, instead of more army style playing. Still, this is a most excellent CD which the discerning pipe listener should enjoy. The CD notes on the band and current Pipe major are also good. Recommended.

Live At Rock In Rio III (DVD/CD) Review

(More customer reviews)Wow, wow, wow! Watching this dvd just puzzles me why Rob went back to Priest, I guess more or less for the paycheck...but oh well, this release is just pure magic. First off the Resurrection cd is included in this set, freshly remastered and newly expanded with 2 tracks from the Resurrection sessions (Sad Wings and Hells Last Survivor), both of them previously appeared on the Japan release and later as (uh-hum) live versions on Insurrection. They make a nice addition finally on the US side. There are 2 brand spanking new tracks Fetish and God Bringer of Death. While they are powerful and fast, and have that trademark Halford scream, they appear out of place on the cd, because again, they are newly recorded, so the mix and sound is different from the rest of the tracks. No bother though, they don't take away any of the majestic from Resurrection.
Now the DVD is a real treat. Halford and his band just slay for 14 songs, and 60 minutes, and you get it all. Halford classics, Fight classics, Priest gems (Jawbreaker and Stained Class) and classic (Breaking the what?...Let's break that Law! and Electric Eye). The DVD is incredible and while it was heavily bootlegged for years, this is the official, cleaned up (video and sound) version, worth every penny.
God Bless you Rob, you have done a superb job with releasing the Fight Collection (yes Into the Pit is a treasure chest!), and now the Halford years...can't wait next year for the Crucible collection. Thanks

Gambling With The Devil Review

(More customer reviews)"Gambling With The Devil" is a little bit of everything for everyone. By that I mean it sounds a bit like Freedom Call, a bit like Andi Deris' solo material and Pink Cream 69-era material, a bit like classic Keepers' Helloween, and a bit like the current era Helloween. That being said, the album has some excellent tracks like Kill It, The Saints, Heaven Tells No Lies, Fallen To Pieces, and Can Do It (a quirky little tune that is one of my personal favorites), but as one reviewer pointed out, there's something missing from the album to label it a 5-star effort. I feel that part of the issue might be the production of the album. A lot of fans love the job that Charlie Bauerfeind has done on the last few albums, but at times it feels almost *too* polished and as a result I think the sound suffers overall. Despite their public comments to the contrary, I think Helloween was at its peak when Tommy Hansen produced their albums. There may have been an old-school sound and feel to their albums, but for some reason, it just sounded right.
I also think that part of the issue is Dani Löble's drumming on the album. Again, as much as the band toes the company line with the usual "this is the best lineup Helloween has ever had" business, I believe Uli Kusch was the perfect drummer for Helloween. There was something about his drumming that meshed perfectly with Weikath, Grapow and especially Grosskopf. Löble, on the other hand, feels too much like a drum machine, too stiff, too unimaginative. As a result the songs sound and feel stiff. No surprise that since Kusch left, they have used a number of drummers to fill in (Mark Cross, Mikkey Dee, Stefan Schwartzmann) and I still don't think they have the guy that sounds right for them. Additionally, I think Kusch helped to break the monotony of Weikath and Deris' songwriting styles; Helloween fans consider "Better Than Raw" and "The Dark Ride" to be some of the Deris-era Helloween's best material, and no surprise that Kusch had a big hand in the songwriting on those albums. Ironically enough, prior to hiring Loble Helloween was looking at hiring Freedom Call-er and Gamma Ray drummer Daniel Zimmermann; one can only imagine what Zimmermann, an accomplished songwriter himself, would have brought to Helloween.
In any case, Helloween has still managed, for their thirteenth release, to put out an effort that proves they have not lost any steam, and are still one of the better bands out there when it comes to keeping their material fresh and exciting. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)Be forwarned that the three 1970 Tanglewood songs from the original release, possibly the best footage on the whole thing, have been omitted from this new version. And the footage of Keith Moon passed out at the 1973 Cow Palace show has been removed. Also, two of the three "new" songs on the first disc were already on the recently released Kilburn DVD set. For many, however, the Rockpalast disc alone will be worth the price.

(More customer reviews)For a longtime fan, The Hard and the Easy is quite a memorable feat. On the one hand, you could say Great Big Sea is playing to their strengths with an all-traditional album. But on the other hand, many of the songs here do not resemble anything they've ever done, even on traditional-heavy discs like the seminal UP or their eponymous debut.
Although they've always leaned heavily (and successfully) on folk sounds, The Hard and the Easy breaks new ground for the band by being their first entirely acoustic album. The songs are lean, quick and at times vaguely familiar. The informative liner notes give the history of each tune. . .a welcome education for us faraway fans who may never set foot on the isle of Newfoundland.
It's nice to see Bob Hallet getting a couple of tunes, and Sean McCann continues to improve at balladry, something he sometimes faltered at on Something Beautiful. His rendering of Graceful & Charming ranks with the band's best love songs.
But for the most part, The Hard and the Easy is about having fun. The expected seafaring tales are there, but there is also further exploration of Newfoundland history in songs like Concerning Charlie Horse and darkly funny Cod Liver Oil. The Mermaid is guaranteed to put a smile on your face; Captain Kidd, Old Polina and the bittersweet Harbour Lecou are destined to be classics.
I confess, I like GBS's original songs every bit as much as the traditional stuff. And UP is still the standard for providing a mix of the old and the new. Which is why I've given this release 4 instead of 5 stars. For other longtime fans, especially those who felt letdown by the more pop-oriented Something Beautiful, this album will be a 5-star one.
And by the way, if you're new to Great Big Sea, this is a fine introduction. . .but there are MANY more joys to be found in their catalog. I'd recommend you get 'em all.
One last note: The DVD included in this release is a nice bonus, mostly footage of the 3 guys playing and talking about their love of their homeland's culture. Best part: Singer Alan Doyle points out that The Hard and the Easy is perhaps the only album in history to include not one, but TWO songs about a horse falling through the ice! It's ultimately nothing groundbreaking, but fans will certainly appreciate it.

'Chaos' features ten superbly performed numbers by Hawkwind as ONLY Hawkwind is able to play them. Loved checking out their epic of a mystical horse, "Magnu", the *ss-kicking "Angels Of Death", the Michael Moorecock doomsday recital "The Blood of Man", "Utopia", "Sonic Attack" and the thirty-plus year (now) concert staple - the pulsating "Assassins Of Allah". To avoid any confusion, line-up for this show was Captain Dave Brock-guitar, keyboards, synthesizer & vocals, Huw Lloyd Langton-lead guitar, Alan Davey-bass & vocals, Harvey Bainbridge-keyboards & synthesizer and Danny Thompson-drums. An absolute must-have.

If your child likes N'Sync or the Backstreet Boys, they will love you forever if you get them this DVD. All of the classic S.O.D. songs are here. There are the classic peace songs such as "F the Middle East" and "Speak English or Die." The sympathetic love song "Kill Yourself." There is even the USA for Africa left over song "Aren't you Hungry?" How that song never ended up on that album is beyond me. And of course, there are the Ballads. You cannot say Monster Ballad without mentioning S.O.D. They are all here: Ballad of Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobein, Frank Sinatra, INXS, and even Walter Payton. There is even a secret code to unlock a one hour concert video filmed on their Bigger than the Devil tour...

(More customer reviews)This awesome DVD is a must for all Ozzy fans! Ozzy Osbourne- Speak Of The Devil is an entire concert filmed back in 1982. This is the same concert that was aired on MTV in the same year. Unfortunately, at that time, I had no VCR to tape the concert with and this concert was never released on tape or DVD until 2 months ago. This is very puzzling because this concert is really sweet. Unlike the Ozzy Osbourne CD- Speak Of The Devil (which is Ozzy's band performing all Black Sabbath songs) this DVD is Ozzy's band performing songs from his first two solo albums, Blizzard Of Ozz, and Diary Of A Madman plus 3 Black Sabbath songs. This concert was filmed just months after the horrible, tragic death of Ozzy's guitarist and great friend Randy Rhoads during the Diary Of A Madman tour. The very talented lead guitarist Brad Gillis was kind enough to join Ozzy and help him finish the tour and record Speak Of The Devil. Songs performed on the DVD include Over The Mountain, Mr. Crowley, Crazy Train, Revelation (Mother Earth), Steal Away The Night, Believer, I Don't Know, Goodbye To Romance, Flying High Again, Suicide Solution, and Black Sabbath songs Iron Man, Children Of The Grave, and Paranoid (the encore). The musicians in Ozzy's band at this time are some of the best in the business. Along with the aforementioned Brad Gillis are Rudy Sarzo on bass, Don Airey on keyboards, and the phenomenal Tommy Aldridge on drums. There is a section near the middle of the concert where Ozzy goes off stage and lets the musicians do their stuff. A sweet little instrumental jam between the 4 musicians, as well as an awesome guitar solo by Brad Gillis and an absolutely killer drum solo by the great Tommy Aldridge. One of the reasons I like this concert so much is because it is really good to see Ozzy bouncing back from the awful Randy Rhoads tragedy. He has been through so much pain over the course of his life and the death of his friend Randy could have really pushed him over the edge. But clearly in this DVD, Ozzy is having fun on stage and really getting the crowd to have fun with him, which he does so very well. If you are a big fan of Ozzy, you will want to watch this video over and over. Only a few minor criticisms of this DVD. The moments in between the songs are mostly edited out. When this concert aired on MTV, there was no editing. It was cool to see Ozzy talk to the crowd in between songs and get them all fired up and rowdy. Also, Ozzy's voice in the concert was looped for much of the songs. There are moments where his voice and his mouth movements don't match up. In one moment, it looks like on stage he has forgotten a line of lyrics and is singing something completely different from what you are hearing. (Give him a break, it happens to all singers at one time or another....lol) Also there are no shots of the crowd, practically, only from the back. Unfortunately, there are no bonus or special features on the DVD. Even with these criticisms, I still give this DVD the highest rating. It is truly a classic despite the minor flaws. To my knowledge, this is the earliest concert footage of Ozzy on his own. This concert blows away all other later live concert videos of Ozzy. As I said earlier, it is a MUST for all Ozzy fans! Marillion have changed quite a bit from the early 80's. Some fans jumped ship as Steve Hogarth replaced the departed Fish. I like the vibe of both versions of Marillion. To be honest,I could not imagine the Fish-fronted Marillion in 2008 - so both Fish and Marillion gained from the separation. So what's Marillion's music like in 2008? Genuine, adventurous, atmospheric, intelligent rock music with touches of everything else. Actually, it's quite difficult to describe Marillion - but the closest you can get is a combination of Radiohead and Coldplay, still better.
Starting with 'Anoraknophobia' in 2001, the band finally started to spark again following two disappointing albums. 'Marbles' released in 2004, is a masterpiece - the songs 'The invisible man,' 'Neverland' and 'Angelina' to name but a few, are real gems. 'Somewhere else' released in 2007 got mixed reactions - there were quite a few gems but some obvious filler as well. (It was difficult to follow up 'Marbles')
So when the band released this dvd from the 'Somewhere else' tour, I approached it with caution. Actually, it turned out to be the best dvd I saw for a long time. The 'Somewhere else' tracks are much better live that the studio versions, and the performances are, to say the least, haunting. Musicianship is first class and Steve Hogarth is one of the most magnetic, still down-to-earth frontmen ever. There are also various tracks from previous albums, but only one from the Fish era. This should not be considered a minus, since the included tracks are all 5 star material. The bonus material is quite interesting with various performances from other concerts from the same tour.
I have been following the rock scene since the late 1980's, listening to 100's of acts. I still can't believe that Marillion is still snubbed by certain critics. They deserve recognition and to fill 80,000 capacity venues anywhere - not because they have been around for 25+ years but because their work deserves it. This dvd proves my point (as does the 'Marbles on the road' dvd - get that as well).

(More customer reviews)First off this DVD is from the 1997 European tour, not 1977 as Amazon has misprinted. I saw this lineup of Butterfly in July 1995 and they were amazing. They said at the show that a new album would be released by next Spring. The "New Album" never materialized. I dont know exactly how long this lineup stayed together but in my opinion its the best that the band has ever sounded (no offense to the prior lineups). With Doug Ingle on Lead Vocals and Keyboards, Lee Dorman on Bass and backing Vocals, Ron Bushy on Drums, Eric Barnett on Guitar and Backing Vocals and Derek Hilland on 2nd Keyboards and backing Vocals this band is sensational.
The Five stars I gave this product mainly represents the Quality of the performances. The Sound is very good and the picture is a little grainy at times, also I dont like the fadeouts between songs. That said there is nothing more to complain about other than it's only about 65 mins. of Music. The songs played are: Iron Butterfly Theme, Unconcious Power, In the Time of Our Lives, Flowers and Beads, Silent Screaming, Ezy Rider, Butterfly Bleu, Whispers in the Wind and of course In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. "Screaming and Whispers" are "New songs".
After the "Concert portion of the DVD you get the Bonus Interviews which include a nice Acoustic song by Ingle. The Interviews are very informative and entertaing. Doug Ingle expresses himself well. Steve Howe of Yes talks a bit about his memories of touring alongside the Butterfly. At this time the DVD is available on Amazon for as little as $12.33. I highly reccomend that if you ever liked Butterfly at all to check this show out. Eric Barnetts Guitar work adds a whole new dimension to the classic sound of this great band. His playing exhuberates a lot of soul in each string of notes. Ingle sounds like nobody else and his voice is in great shape after so many years. Enjoy!!!
