The real jewel, though, is the "Back on the Block" footage. Volume 8 goes back to the series' roots and brings us playground highlights from some of the country's most hallowed courts. The game at Gun Hill is bananas. Add in some new tracks by the likes of Busta, Wu-Tang, and the Diplomats, and some nice hidden features (the player commentary is wild), and you've got yet another streetball classic from AND 1. Cop this.

Meat Loaf: In Search of Paradise (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)First off, I give this 3 1/2 stars. They don't have a half-star option.
This is a documentary about the rehearsal stages and first several shows of a Meat Loaf tour through Canada to promote Bat Out Of Hell 3. The case is VERY misleading, as it lets you think you are going to see a full concert and even lists songs in the setlist of the concert as if you're going to see them. YOU WILL NOT SEE A WHOLE SONG. YOU WILL SEE SNIPPETS OF SONGS. The majority of the footage is Meat dealing with the various details of tour. There's quite a bit of attention paid to the Paradise On The Dashboard light controversy: the alleged indecency of him performing the number with Aspen Miller due to her perceived age. (She was 28 at the time of filming/touring.) Maybe even too much time is devoted to this. It honestly felt like this was the theme of the entire documentary.
We also see pieces of Meat's rituals before a show, and it shows the extreme level of perfection he demands from his crew, but mostly from himself. He is hardest on himself and never seems satisfied. This isn't the usual Rock Star ego trip, he continues to push himself to be better, louder, faster, and the best. He does so at a toll on his health, and we repeatedly see him pass out after shows.
I would recommend this to hardcore Meat Loaf fans, but casual fans or someone expecting to see a full or at least partial concert could easily come away disappointed.

(More customer reviews)Tupac Live At The House of Blues is now available in both DVD and CD format. Although the cover art for the CD and DVD are adorned with Tupac's image, the set really needs to pay more homage to Snoop Dogg and the Dogg Pound as they carry the bulk of the concert.
The DVD opens up with a dark screen. Female voices can be heard talking about how fine and sexy Tupac is. Soon the concert begins. Tupac is rocking an all white outfit and he has a strong stage presence. The lighting is good for his performances and he is shown at several camera angles. This is a very good production, not some bootleg like concert. He rocks the stage with his partners The Outlawz. Tupac only performs a handful of songs, and some of the songs are cut short as Pac spits a few verses and launches into another song. He is joined by KC and JoJo from Jodeci for the song "How Do You Want It." Tupac offers some banter with the DJ as he goes back and forth about the track for "How Do You Want It" not being available. The DJ finds the track (whether this was a joke or a true situation isn't clear) and the trio pump "How Do You Want It." Pac does a lot of talking about Biggie A.K.A. "Fat Boy," and the East Coast beef. Towards the end of the DVD he speaks about his alleged sexual romp with Faith Evans. Pac doesn't perform any of his pre-1995 hit songs. It's great to see Pac perform but his performance is so short it's almost like he was the opening act.
The true stars of this DVD are Snoop Dogg, The Dogg Pound and Nate Dogg. Snoop opens up with "Murder Was The Case." They have quite a stage presence and really engage the audience. They rock a long set that includes all of their major hits. At the close of the show Tupac and Snoop perform their hit single "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted."
This is a really great concert DVD. The producers leave in all of the banter and talking and the audience feels like they are actually at the show. The DVD also includes five of Tupac's music videos from his double CD "All Eyez On Me."

The Wedding Singer (2006 Original Broadway Cast) Review

(More customer reviews)As far as musical comedy scores go, "The Wedding Singer" is the best since "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." It's instantly tuneful, witty, and more enjoyable than I really expected it to be. Firmly grounded in the pop styles of the 80's, writers Matthew Sklar (music) and Chad Beguelin (lyrics) have a lot of fun both mocking and honoring the decade (the obligatory synthesizer corniness recalls last year's "Altar Boyz"). They've done a good job crafting a score that works theatrically in its own right, and not just as a string of parodies. The cast-- which includes Tony-nominee Stephen Lynch, Laura Benanti, and Amy Spanger-- is solid, and they bring great vocals and energy to the score's numerous catchy songs (highlights include "It's Your Wedding Day," "Casualty of Love," "Not That Kind of Thing," and "If I Told You"). I suppose how much you like it might depend on your predilection for all things 80's, but this is one of the most downright likable of recent cast recordings. (Listen, too, for what has got to be an intentional shout-out to another 80's themed musical, "Taboo.")

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps - The Concert Film (1978) Review

(More customer reviews)This is Neil at the top of his game. The decade preceding this release saw Young put out all the strongest material that would carry his reputation for the next 25 years. Sure, he would return to form in the late 80's for another strong run, but this is where he and the Horse hit their stride. Crazy Horse is a one trick pony, but that trick is something else when they have it all together, and they have it all together all the way through this DVD.
The stage show is a bit silly in retrospect, the kind of grandstanding he must have done, tongue in cheek, but the music is undeniably powerful. In many cases, these are the definitive versions of these songs, and Young clearly revels in their glories. You'll not find a better version of "Cinnamon Girl" or "Powderfinger" anywhere, and the proof is how well these renditions in particular have stood up.
Of course, it would all go south almost immediately after this tour. Becoming a father to two severely handicapped sons, dealing with failed relationships and a new marraige and trying to keep his private life out of the public eye and out of the manipulating hands of David Geffen would result in some truly awful, often bewildering, constantly changing directions that would span the 80's. Not until the Bluenotes Cd and then FREEDOM would Neil find his groove and court passionately his muse again, but at least at this point, it is as though he is that kid on the dock in "Powderfinger" who is just about to see his face flash in the sky.
This is a landmark concert, well worth watching over and over again. The sound transfer is great.

Do you want them to get up and move -- dancing, clapping, hopping and stomping? Of course you do, and that's why you need to get them "Stir It Up," the first DVD released by the award-winning children's group Imagination Movers.
"Stir It Up" presents 15 songs in a mix of MTV-style (yet child appropriate) videos and performances from their live shows, with a few goofy skits added for fun. The songs successfully blend kid-friendly themes with a bouyant mix of hip/hop, rock, rockabilly, old school R&B, reggae and calypso beats. The choreography is simple and uncomplicated, making it easy for children to get on their feet and join in the fun.
So, by now you've figured out I like "Stir It Up," but the true test of a children's DVD is whether children like it. "Stir It Up" not only passes that test, it gets and A+ and extra credit! The first time I played the DVD for my distracted 3-year old, she was moving and grooving with the Imagination Movers seconds into the high-energy first song, "Recipe (Stir It Up)." She was encouraged to "Reach high, think big, work hard, [and] have fun" in "Calling All Movers." She found out bedtime doesn't have to be scary listening to "I Want My Mommy" and even learned that cleaning up can be fun from "Clean My Room." As soon as the DVD ended, she was begging me to "play it again, Mommy." Best of all, "Stir It Up" has survived the fickleness of a 3-year old, constantly remaining my child's favorite DVD for the past few months.
The sound and video are not as slick and polished as bigger-budget DVDs, but that doesn't matter. Children love the Imagination Movers and they love "Stir It Up!" "Stir It Up" is a must-have for your child's DVD library.

The Rolling Stones - Rock and Roll Circus Review

(More customer reviews)The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus was released Oct 15, 1996. It is the long suppressed made-for-TV special recorded 28 years earlier on Dec 11-12, 1968 with The Who, John Lennon, Taj Mahal, Jethro Tull, Marianne Faithful, and Eric Clapton. The packaging is beautiful with a great 42 page glossy color booklet that has all the rare behind the scenes photos and a full account of things leading up to the event. The Who were red hot at the time and easily upstaged the Stones who were still struggling through their first major crisis after the removal of Brian (and his subsequent death) and attempting to figure out how to hold on to their status as the premier band. The Stones refused to release the recordings because their performances were not spectacular. Most reviewers agreed when they finally got to see the film themselves. However, what the film lacks in production (which was obviously amateurish) it makes up for in history. The Stones lackluster set of Jumpin' Jack Flash, Parachute Woman, No Expectations, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Sympathy For the Devil, and Salt Of The Earth are easily compensated by The Who's mini opera A Quick One While He's Away and Lennon and Clapton's Yer Blues. There are also dated period piece interviews with Mick and John and very amateurish introductions by the individual Stones, which when combined with the extremely amateurish set, acting, and cinematography amply demonstrate why this is one for Stones and rock history collectors. The Stones were right, it didn't work for them, and it is good that the release was delayed until it appealed to collectors and would not reflect on the reputation of the band.
Most people know the music, so in my reviews I try to give you data on the sessions and interesting facts connected with the songs and the album. Here we go:

(More customer reviews)I also attended the Seattle screening, and I was blown away at how good this DVD is. Of course the experience of watching it with the guys was something I will never forget. What band watches a movie WITH their fans? I can't think of one. That's why we BHs are family. This DVD is not a typical concert DVD. If you're expecting something similar to Hangin Tough live, this isn't it. We get to see the reunion from before the Today show in April 08 through to the Houston concert in July 09. And, it's from the guys' point of view -- how they prepared, how they felt, which concerts were their favorites, and where they're going next. If you consider yourself a fan of NKOTB, regardless of how insane a fan you are, this DVD is a must see! And for the current price of $9.99, I think almost anyone can afford it!

Since it was nearly seven years since the last time the E Street Band and Bruce Springsteen played together during the Tunnel of Love and the Amnesty International tours, their coming together in 1995 was a fans dream.
The band members had become more adept at playing their instruments, they had matured some, and it comes out in the numerous renditions of Blood Brothers and Secret Garden (which would be later used in the movie Jerry Maguire) that we get to eavesdrop on like a fly on the wall in the studio.
The E Streeters do an awesome job with Murder Incorporated, a song they'd used for years in concerts, just had never released on an album before.
And when they finally get to This Hard Land, it's Springsteen at his purist; no politics, no agenda, just people and good hard rock and roll.
As a fan I'd cheer the Boss if he did nothing more than sit in a chair with an acoustic guitar and sing for an hour, but what you've got here is 90 minutes worth of behind the scenes goings on, and it's well worth the money.
And if you never have, make sure you go to a concert if you ever have the chance. You'll never forget it.

The Triplets of Belleville Review

(More customer reviews)"Triplets of Beleville" is absolutely a treasure from the French director Sylvain Chomet. The details, story, humor, character development, the relationship between the characters, and the pure delight rivals that of the great Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki's works. It is absolutely a pleasure watching this almost speechless story unfold all the way to the final scene. Most of the dialogue, if any, is in French, but no subtitles. And that is intentional: you don't need it. Now that takes some good story-telling to achieve. And this film achieves in leaps and bounds. Chomet clearly has a different philosophy than the American animations going into his art. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean that Disney or Pixar works are not good, "Triplets" is just one of the most outstanding and different in story telling and the use of the medium that I have ever seen for a long time in an animated work. They say the devil is in the details. Well, then this is what makes this movie. I almost drowned in the images on the screen. The heart-felt story and just the way the story was eccentrically told stayed with me for a long long time after i left the theatre. Not since a Studio Ghibli (Miyazaki-Takahata) masterpiece have made me feel this way. Just for the details alone I could watch this over and over again. Therefore I can't wait to buy the DVD so I can make this story mine. I recommend this to all Miyazaki fans to check it out. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy. You will.

due to printing error. The release of the special dvd+cd
combo will be on the 4th Feb 08, but i can't wait so i
bought the dvd version instead. It's such a great live
performance by Jay, i was at his live act in Singapore
on 18th Jan, on his birthday. That was my 1st concert
and i had such an amazing night, Jay set such a high
standard i suppose not much asian act can come close to
his performance. Nan Chuan Ma Ma was the special guest
that night, and i think Lara is simply adorable. This
dvd comes with special footages of Jay rehearsing for
his Niu Zai Hen Mang in a dance studio, just like his
live act in singapore Jay will announce his last song
then he will encore 3 more before calling it a night. I
highly recommend this fantabuloustically good live dvd
performance by the talented Jay Chou, he done us asian
proud. What a Gifted Performer!!

(More customer reviews)Rush Replay should be one of the best DVD concert releases of the Summer. (Technically very late Spring). This 3 DVD/1 CD box set will include the DVD versions of "Exit... Stage Left," "Grace Under Pressure," and "A Show of Hands." The CD in the box set is the unreleased soundtrack CD of the "Grace Under Pressure."
Before Rush Replay all three concerts were on VHS. These were extremely hard to get your hands on. Now, thanks to Alex Lifeson and Mike Fraser, you can enjoy these classic concerts in 5.1 surround sound and remastered visuals.
Exit... Stage Left:
The first DVD in Rush Replay is "Exit... Stage Left," which was filmed at The Forum in Montreal, Quebec. Anyone who owns the Exit... Stage Left CD knows how totally awesome the concert was. The CD and the DVD are radically different though. Lets look at the track listing of each.

So A Show Of Hands contains 8 songs from "Power Windows" and "Hold Your Fire." Closer To The Heart, Tom Sawyer, 2112, and In The Mood are on all 3 DVDs. Rush Replay also will also include mini reprints of the original tour booklets from the three concerts.
In the end, you get Exit... Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure, A Show Of Hands, the Grace Under Pressure CD, and three mini reprints of the tour booklets for a list price of $40. That's a great deal for three classic Rush concerts and a Rush concert CD soundtrack.
If you enjoy Rush Replay than you will also enjoy Rush In Rio and R30.

Note: This is my updated review as of June 13, 2006. The previous part was my review as of April 17, 2006, before Rush Replay had been released.Rush Replay was released today and all I can say is, "It's excellent." It's been a long two months of waiting, but the waiting was rewarded.
First, let me talk about the Exit... Stage Left DVD. Limelight, Tom Sawyer, and The Trees start the DVD off, followed by Xanadu. Xanadu, on this DVD, is a classic. Because of advancements in technology, all Neil has to do nowadays is hit a MIDI trigger and the chime or bell sound is created. Here however, you get to see him running through the wind chimes, or hitting the bells. It's more realistic than he does on R30. Plus, both Alex and Geddy are using double necks, adding even more realistic sounds.
Another thing I missed to point out in April was that `Closer to the Heart' is different on the DVD than it is on the CD. Not much different, but a little.
The finale of `By-Tor/In The End/In The Mood/2112 Finale' is also a good melody.
For my mini-review of the Grace Under Pressure Tour, I'll start off with the Fear Trilogy live. This was the only tour, along with the Power Windows Warm-Up Tour, that featured the entire fear trilogy. Second, you get an awesome version of New World Man, instead of the Rush In Rio version. The YYZ/The Temples Of Syrinx/Tom Sawyer melody is approximately 9 minutes, 41 seconds long. The only song shortened in the melody is YYZ, which is cut down about a minute. Then you have Vital Signs, so, again, you don't have to listen to the Rush In Rio version.
The Grace Under Pressure Tour Soundtrack is the bonus CD. If you buy Replay at Best Buy, then you also get Limelight (Exit... Stage Left version), Closer To The Heart (Exit... Stage Left version), The Spirit Of Radio (A Show Of Hands verson), and Tom Sawyer (A Show Of Hands version) on the end of the soundtrack. (Note: When importing the bonus CD into your computer, the track listing, artist, album name, etc. will not come up, so be prepared to type them in.)
My notes for A Show Of Hands are as followed, Manhattan Project and Force Ten are awesome. I had been waiting to see Manhattan Project live for a long time. Later in the DVD are The Spirit Of Radio and Tom Sawyer, along with a 2112/La Villa Strangiato/In The Mood finale. Most of the A Show Of Hands DVD is excellent.
Also, all three tour books are great. The best on is the Hold Your Fire tour book with Neil's story "Fireworks (The making of Hold Your Fire)".
In the end, Rush Replay is just what I expected back in April, awesome. Everything from the remastered visuals to the remastered audio is excellent. Rush Replay is highly recommended for any classic rock fan.

(More customer reviews)this is a great story as ESPN cameras follow the streetballers from city to city....I like the stories about the guys where they started and grew up playing streetball...the game in NYC was like a 'real game' - the and1 players were serious cause they knew the ball players there you couldn't do so many tricks cause they were coming at em....same with oakland's open run....
alimoe talks about being recruited by tarkanian and fresno state, headache talks about the original 5 and1 players with footage from the original video of highlights, hot sauce comes off as the crowd favorite everywhere they go...some good video of ao...as well....its a good dvd
the full entire game played in atlanta is on 2nd disc and its fun to watch the one and only skip to my lou in action...
bottom line if you're interested in seeing real ball players who love the game and play for the competition and thrill of the game - watch these guys and support and1 basketball...yeah its streetball and its not about fundamentals or team basketball but its about players who play in the playgrounds and would play even if they never made a dime doing it....for the love of the game...
