(More customer reviews)They said it would never happen, they said fat chance trying to get Dave Mustaine and James and Kirk to share a stage together. Guess what? Its real! Seeing how timeless the Big 4 are and how they still rule to this day, this is historic on so many levels.
Every band brought their A game to this, Anthrax starts off and Joey couldn't sound any better. During Indians in mid song he just breaks into a mini Ronnie James Dio tribute with the song Heaven and Hell. Completely unexpected! Very cool, Joey is a character running around in Chief Indian hat lol
Megadeth my favorite of them all starts off with the classic Holy Wars, and as soon as they begin it starts to rain, this just adds to the performance making it intense, Hangar 18 had the whole crowd going crazy! I'm very happy that they did A Tout Le Monde, the whole crowd sang along word by word. In Short, Megadeth killed it!
Slayer is next my second favorite, they never dissapoint Kerry King is flawless, Hank as well, Daves drumming is like thunder especially Disciple! Toms voice is good but sometimes not clear, because of all the mayhem going on
And then we have Metallica. Ok well they had the longest set of all 4, about 2 hours, every body else got 1 hour, Metallica also had a huge screen in the background for close ups of the band, no one else had that.

There are many highlights in this show, including all 4 bands playing Diamond Head's Am I Evil???? Which was epic only Tom did not sing. It was great seeing James sing then Joey then Dave, 16 people on stage killing it!!!! During Slayers performance Tom thanks the crowd in Hungarian which was cool.
Many more highlights and funny stuff in the documentary. Watch it very good stuff
Not once was I bored during this 5 hour spectacular, I just wish it could have been more unheard or barely played songs not just hits, I mean who wants to hear Fuel and Sad But True anyway????
I can't believe Megadeth didn't play Killing is My Business! That was the perfect venue for it! Oh well, also I really wished they would play The Skull Beneath the Skin ( my fav Megadeth song ) that song never gets played live. Also Slayer wasn't as explosive as before but that's due to Toms back problems he can't whip his head around like crazy anymore, he didn't even try to whip it, and I don't blame him.
This dvd is officially out today Nov 2 but if you were smart and preordered it like me, then you got early access! Yes the box set is the ultimate....

(More customer reviews)For me personally, Megadeth was the premier thrash band. Metallica had nothing on former Metallica's guitarist Dave Mustaine and his band. Unlike Metallica, Megadeth managed to put out consistently good music. I am not really into speed metal (which is ironic since I love industrial music) but Megadeth was the band that I really got into. "Rust in Peace" made me a fan. I don't remember what compelled me to buy the album but I sure got an earful. It was heavy and intense. Fourteen years later, "Rust in Peace" still holds up well given the current circumstances of our country's foreign policies. Dave Mustaine didn't write your average angst-ridden lyrics. He delved into government conspiracies like "Hangar 18" and the notion of the government hiding UFOs out in Nevada. Dave and Marty Friedman's breakneck guitar playing complimented each other very well. Dave Ellefson is one of my favorite bassists of all time. He and (former) drummer Nick Menza gives the band the backbone the band needed. All the songs are great but I particularly am a big fan of the first two singles "Holy Wars..." and "Hangar 18". The music videos for those songs were excellent. That was when artists and bands made good, quality videos. Megadeth was one of those bands whose videos were always entertaining even if they were concert footage they still were good. For me, "Rust in Peace" is Megadeth's best album. It isn't stupid metal like Limp Bizkit or Korn whose buffoonery and whining gets on my last nerves.

Gigan Tour Review

(More customer reviews)As another reviewer said, this is a rare opportunity to see Dream Theater play Panic Attack and The Glass Prison live, as it will not be included on the Score DVD. I think they chose these two because they wanted to play some heavier material for the crowds that Megadeth and Fear Factory attract. And as a bonus, Symphony X will be playing Inferno, which is a big plus for any DT fans who haven't check them out yet. Aside from the prog metal portion of this DVD though, Factory and Megadeth fans will get to hear some DT and hopefully will like it. It's going to be a great experiemental DVD for both sides of the spectrum, and people like me will get the best of both worlds. But who the heck is Bobaflex? Like I said, a good experimental DVD with something new and exciting for everyone. Add the bonus features on the second DVD, and you've got yourself quite a sweet deal for the price.

Rust In Peace (Live) (2010) Review

I remember seeing these songs performed during the "Clash of the Titans" tour back in the 90s, and I'm glad Mustaine chose to do this album in its entirety. Not too many heavy metal albums rank next to this one, and I rank this album as one of the greatest of all time.
The musicianship is second to none. I would go so far as to say this is the best Megadeth lineup, as I think Shawn Drover is the best drummer Dave has played with in a long time (Gar Samuelson was probably the best). He is a solid drummer who can play the all the material. He has the chops and style. Chris Broderick is massive on the guitar. He really can move over that fret board and seems like a natural for all the parts. Personally I like to hear all the original solos played as they were originally written, but I don't mind when someone like Broderick adds his own flare because after hearing his work on "Endgame" I think to myself, "What would he have done with 'Rust In Peace?' Not dissing Marty, just giving respect to Chris.
I gave this 4 stars because of a few short comings. Take my following criticism more like suggestions for the future as I am really a diehard fan of Megadeth, and have been for decades (but I know Dave and Megadeth management will never see this review).
1) The vocals were overdubbed, and it is easy to see. My question is, "why?" Mix as you will, but let the true live experience come full force. The music sounded great, I'm sure the vocals sounded just as good. I have this problem with many live DVDs; don't funk with the mix so much.
2) Backstage footage was skimpy. This would have been a great opportunity to really go behind he scenes and see how the band sets up, check out the equipment, and do some solid up close interviews, especially with the other band members. Also, show some footage of the tour preparation rehearsals when the band was first playing all of "Rust In Peace" in a rehearsal studio (and when Ellefson just came back). The DVD creators could have even re-visted footage from "The Clash of the Titans," and do a retrospective kind of thing. That would have been awesome!! A nice biography would have been great, tracing the history of Megadeth up till now (something quick and creative). And last for this point, fan interviews. The screaming fans showed the energy and excitement, but do something more refined to really get the feel of the fans. Some of those fans came a long way. I would had loved to had heard their stories about Megadeth a bit more in depth. So much more could have been done, and it would have been worth the price hike. I felt the creativity with the DVD was lacking.
And 3) Again, with the bonus footage. I'm a bass player, and I love the drums, and the guitar work on "Rust In Peace" is genre breaking and defining, so why aren't there performance isolation angle options? This would have been great for the Blu-Ray DVD (as all this extra footage would need the space). Show the parts being played live, up close and personal. Dave Mustaine once said in an interview, where he was showcasing his signature Marshall stack, that the best way to learn a guitar part is to watch the actual musician play it (if you want to learn it note for note). This would have been a great opportunity for that to come true. But the bonus material really doesn't hold up to the what other bands produce. I think Megadeth could have taken a lesson from Dream Theater (actually Mike Portnoy) in this regard, and pack the DVD with every possible thing you could imagine, and sell the hell out of it. Mike Portnoy could have lent Shawn Drover his drumcam(s), so we could see his technique, etc. I would have like to see those drum parts, like on "5 Magics" and "Rust In Peace...Polaris." Again, the package could have been for the Blu-Ray only, or make it multiple DVDs, whatever, just give me more. I would have paid the price.
I'm obviously thinking with a fans mind, and maybe some of what I said could not have happened logistically or financially, but I think if minds and the powers that be had sat down and really thought out this process, and looked outside the box to give the fans the ultimate experience then more stuff could have been packed in to the DVD. In the end, the performance was awesome!!!! And for what the DVD offers, the price is right, but it could have been so much more.

Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? Review

(More customer reviews)Many music fans consider this to be one of thrash/speed metal's best records. "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" is doubtlessly Dave Mustaine's first masterpiece. It is a classic, standard-setting album which is one of the best and most powerful and contagious releases of the 1980's (right up there with Metallica's "Master of Puppets" and Slayer's "Reign In Blood"). The famous album opener, "Wake Up Dead," has a pair of guitar solos, as well as a couple tempo changes, and "The Conjuring" is a catchy song, with fast, propulsive riffs. Next, the title track has more catchy, chugging guitars, several small solos, and an infectious sing-along near the end. "Devil's Island" and "Good Mourning/Black Friday" both have tasty solos (and "Good Mourning" also has a very catchy chorus and almost buzzsaw riffs). From front to back, this C.D. is very memorable and nearly perfect. It's a must own for every thrash and metal collection. The bottom line is, if you like heavy metal, why wouldn't you buy "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?"? Plus, I strongly recommend getting the remastered version of this C.D. The four remixes at the end aren't anything especially interesting, but, overall, the album's sound quality is MUCH improved.

Cunning Stunts (Smartpak) Review

(More customer reviews)This is an interesting show. This is right in the thick of the "Load" tour when Metallica were trying something different.
So What sounds pretty damn good and it's a good way to open the show. Right from that into Creeping Death which always sounds cool live. Then the boys go into the worst version of Sad But True they've probably ever done. I always skip this because it's just...eww. Ain't My Bitch sounds good live however, as do Hero of the Day and King Nothing. Then they go into a pretty bad version of One where Kirk misses the start of his solo and James sounds...not very good. Then, a nice little version of Fuel w/ alternate lyrics and as always, Fuel smokes live. Then a bass/guitar doodle of My Friend of Misery and Sanitarium into a very good version of Nothing Else Matters. Then Until It Sleeps comes in which I'm not a fan of personally, but it sounds good live. Then good ol' Bellz kicks in and gets the place jumpin'. Great live song and huge crowd pleaser every time. Then, Wherever I May Roam which is good live, but I'm glad it's not a staple anymore. Then...Fade to Black. A GREAT version of Fade to Black at that. Everybody nails their parts perfectly and the mood that is set is just awesome. Then they play the Kill/Ride medley, which consists of parts of Ride the Lightning, No Remorse, Hit the Lights, The Four Horsemen, Seek and Destroy, and Fight Fire w/ Fire. Then for the encore they come out with Last Caress into the first part of Master of Puppets, cutting out before the interlude, then segwaying into Enter Sandman. At the end of Sandman is where the "stunts" come in. Lots of pyro, explosions, lights cutting out, emergency workers w/ flashlights, and a guy on fire running across the stage. Once all that's done, the PA system has actually collapsed so it looks like a little garage, which is lit by dozens of hanging light bulbs. The last two songs for the night are Am I Evil? and a badly edited version of Motorbreath where Kirk is clearly using two different guitars. Overall, it's all right. Get S&M before you get this, or better yet, go see Metallica for yourself.

(More customer reviews)I was never a big fan of Anthrax, mostly because I never really listened to them back then but this performance has made me want to go back and take a better listen.
Anthrax:
In my opinion, Anthrax steals the show that night from watching this DVD. It's supposed to be a celebration of "The Big Four" but it left me wanting to watch more Anthrax. Mainly because they sound incredible and you know for a fact your getting the live feed without any trickery. Everything sounded like you were sitting right in front as it should. All the guys are having a blast and are on top of their game. What a shame they didn't get more time and at night but this is good enough because they schooled everyone else. Every song sounded great and it was a good even surprising mix of what I apparently never heard with the exception of I am the Law, Indians etc.. It was a good sounded diverse set with a hint of Punk from the bass player and a nice thoughtful and brilliantly played Heaven An Hell. I've watched their performance 4 times now and still love it.
Megadeth:
My favorite band out of the four put on a brilliantly played musical set. You can instantly tell from the Anthrax performance and sound quality that Megadeth had a totally different sound going on. More "tinny" Musically and sonically it sounded GREAT but Dave Mustains vocals RUINED the performance. I have seen a lot of Megadeth performances and he usually can pull it off.. sometimes he sounds great, sometimes not but this performance was AWFUL. He usually overdubs the official releases but apparently he didn't have much control over this one. I've read others who say the overdubs suck but unfortunate this is an overdub issue.. This is a vocal issue with Dave.
He needs to seek medical attention or do different songs because this falsetto he's doing sounds silly and embarrassing to sit here and watch it. He seems to really struggle with the higher register.. almost as if he's lost the back of his vocal chords.. I think the rain during their set was a message to the band to get Dave some help or hang it up. Watch it once and it's so embarrassing to see much less hear you will shrink back into your couch. the boys in the back must have been like wtf???
Slayer:
Couldn't hear them.. too damn muddy and the guitars are WAY in the back of the mix.. maybe these guys should get some better gear so we can really hear them? but they looked cool...
Metallica:
Same ole... What are you going to say? It sounded good but I heard Lars screw up a couple times but no biggie..It was Metallica and it's the same songs we've heard over and over..
So in the end I have to say it's worth it from a historical perspective and the added bonus of Anthrax schooling all the pro's that night.. well done

Gigantour 2 (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)The inaugural Gigantour was unique due to it's lineup: Dry Kill Logic, Life Of Agony, Nevermore, Fear Factory, Dream Theater, etc. While the cd and dvd releases were long-awaited, the final results suffered. The tracklisting for both versions were nothing to cry out about (both versions were on two discs!), the worst thing was the audio. Audio mixing was handled by longtime Megadeth collaborator Jeff Balding. Don't get me wrong, the sound was good for what it was. At times, you wished it was better. Not even the best moments could really make a difference, and there were only a few. Fast-forward to today: the long-awaited compilation cd and dvd for 2006's Gigantour 2 are finally available. By now, you're probably asking yourself if it's worth it after the first Gigantour. Let's look at the line-up: it's way better. The Smashup (I had never listened to them before watching this dvd, so I can't really comment much except their performance was good), Sanctity (who were invited on the tour by Dave Mustaine before they even released an album), Into Eternity, Overkill, Arch Enemy, Opeth, and Lamb Of God. The tracklistings for the dvd and cd are also an improvement:

Peace Sells is a bonus track on both versions.
You get a little variety, so you're not listening to the exact same songs on the cd or dvd. The audio: excellent. Andy Sneap (who also collaborated with Megadeth on United Abominations and the Warchest boxset), serves up the best sound quality you could ever ask for, making it seem like much, much more than a sampler from the 2006 tour. The behind the scenes footage is also an honorable mention, from pulling pranks on other bands, to dealing with beer being thrown onto the soundboard during the show. Also, one of my favorite moments is when they held a contest for a lucky fan to have the chance to be on stage with Arch Enemy and shred during one of their songs. How many contests like that are there? I noticed that a lot of stores didn't have the dvd or cd, the only place here in town that carried the dvd was Circuit City, you're lucky if you can find the cd version. I couldn't, and ordering it was my last resort. Do not pass either one up.
The line-up for this year's Gigantour is not huge considering that there's only five bands, but it doesn't mean that it'll lack the energy. Mind you, I'm not a fan of Job For A Cowboy or High On Fire, but Children Of Bodom and In Flames with Megadeth sounds like a dream.

I bought this on VHS when it first came out so glad its finally on DVD. out of all the live videos and dvd's that i have in my collection none of them are as clear or nicely produced as Anthrax's N.F.V.the sound quality is amazing and really has been a basis for comparison for me ever since it came out. Heavy as Hell, tight, and just amazing. This version of Medusa totally blew me away. I've seen Anthrax live probably about 3 times over the years and I will say this: This video actually captures the the power and intesity of the actual performance. Put it in crank the surround sound sit back and see them just like you were back in 1987.

Metallica/Slayer/Megadeth/Anthrax: The Big 4 - Live from Sofia, Bulgaria (2010) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a review for the blu-ray 2 disc set. On the first disc you get Anthrax, followed by Megadeth and then Slayer's set. On the second disc you get the Metallica set and the bonus features. I will break down the setlists at the bottom of the review.
First the sound is amazing in my opinion, as is the picture. I thought the overall mix on all four sets was really good. I've read the one review about Mustaine's vocals, I didn't notice it, so can't really comment on whether it has or hasn't been remixed. It wasn't a concern for me personally.
The bonus features include a behind the sccenes documentary which includes interviews and a peak at the Am I Evil? rehearsal backstage which is just good fun. I like back stage stuff and interviews so I dig that extra feature.
So for the bulk features of this "product" I give it five stars, good picture, good sound, bonus features are nice added touch. I couldnt really find a reason to deduct any stars based on the product. The camera shots are typical concert fodder, close stage center, back stage left, over the crowd, close up floating over crowd and behind the band looks. I appreciate the traditional camera shots, I am not really a fan of the waving, roving camera techniques where you flashy, quick looks and can't follow anything. I like to get long shots of the guitar when there are solos etc. So , I was happy with the way this was shot.
Now for my personal opinions. I was very happy with the setlists for Megadeth and Metallica. Megadeth didn't waste time chatting, they went from song to song and really delivered. I've seen Megadeth live many times and they are always incredible, this is no exception, what really got me going for the Megadeth set was the guitar, those riffs are just so amazing, and Chris Broderick is an amazing addition to this lineup. His live performances with Nevermore were astounding and when he joined Megadeth I wondered if it would be enough for a guitarist of his caliber. Clearly it is, he is having a blast.
I was unhappy with Slayer's setlist. I have seen Slayer live and they are really worth seeing. Songs like World Painted Blood, Jihad, Hate Worldwide, Beauty Through Order would have been better replaced with Dead Skin Mask (I can't believe they didn't play this one), Expendable Youth, Die by the Sword. Too bad, but again, this is just my preference. I really recommend the double live CD Decade of Aggression. It's an amazing set of songs.Metallica setlist mirrors their previous blu-ray release. I think it's a solid set of songs and they sounded very good, the mix is great. This is when you see all the guys coming together and perform together and that is alot of fun. I've seen Metallica live every tour since 1986 and I can say this past tour has had some great setlists. I could have done without N.E.M., but hey the crowd loved it. If you have any questions I'll try to answer them.
((***Side ponder*** I wondered who decided what order the bands should perform in? I found it curious to have Megadeth perform before Slayer as they are more widely known.))
If you dig all four, or one or two of these bands, this is worth owning and was alot of fun to watch.

When the 'Big Four,' Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax shared a stage together on June 22nd, 2010, in Sofia, Bulgaria, it was the moment their fans had waited decades for. That monumental show was beamed live into over 1000 theaters worldwide via satellite in a special HD cinematic event. On November 2nd, 2010, this legendary concert will be available on DVD and Blu-ray through Warner Bros. Records. 'The Big Four Live From Sofia' includes full shows from all four bands on a two-disc set as well as behind the scenes and interview footage. In addition to the two DVD set and the corresponding Blu-ray, there will be a limited edition 'Super Deluxe' Box Set including the 2 DVD set, five CD's with ALL 5 HOURS of music, a 24 page booklet, a two-sided poster, photos of each band, and a collectable Big 4 guitar pick. These four acts broke out of the underground thrash movement in the 1980's to dominate the metal world, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. Despite huge demand, these musical giants had never shared the same stage. The legendary June 22nd, 2010, concert from the tour's stop of the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria aired the same day in 79 movie theaters in the U.K, over 450 theaters in over 140 markets in the US, as well as being beamed into theaters in Europe, Canada, Latin America, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. In December 2009, the bands announced that they would be joining forces to take part in the traveling Sonisphere Festival for only 7 shows across Europe. This one-time only event, from the Sofia show, made it possible for fans far and wide to participate in what otherwise was a very limited run of dates. Lars Ulrich of Metallica says of this historic show, 'Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal's Big Four would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theater near you in High Definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!' Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says, 'Damn, as if this Big 4 tour wasn't exciting enough, now we get to be on the big screen worldwide! Metal at the movies, two big horns up! -Dave. Any discussion of Megadeth's DVD should start with him.
In addition to his prodigious musical abilities, he also proves himself to be quite a stage presence. Sure, he doesn't say too much onstage, but he doesn't have to. His voice here is in fine form, as menacing as ever, and he and Al Pitrelli tear it up on guitar.
-The song selection is pretty damn good. Sure, there was no "Five Magics" or "Addicted to Chaos," but as the saying goes, you can't please all the people all the time. Every album gets represented except for "Risk," which I doubt most fans will miss anyway. Megadeth classics like "Reckoning Day," "Peace Sells," "Hangar 18," "Trust," and "Sweating Bullets" get treated here, and I severely doubt anyone will feel cheated.
-The performance of "In My Darkest Hour" is a tear-jerker. Even the guitar riffs are brooding and evocative, and Dave's tortured vocals and lyrics make the song one of the few in thrash-metal history that can accurately be described as moving. It sounds even better here than on CD, and is in my opinion definitely the highlight of the show.
-You get to see Jimmy Degrasso annihilate his drum kit. The drum solo at the end of "She-Wolf" is completely gratuitous, and man is it great.
-The sound quality is uniformly cystal clear. The guitar solos, especially, come out extraordinarily well.
-It's Megadeth, for crying out loud. I shouldn't have to tell why you should want to see such a comprehensive concert from one of metal's defining bands.
