Standing on the Edge Review

Standing on the Edge

This is an album that needs to be taken into context, with respect to the state of the band in 1985, the state of the music industry in 1985, and the common expectations of a Cheap Trick fan in 2005 raised on the early Budokan and "Surrender" type work, or for that matter any person today.
Twenty years ago Cheap Trick were in the midst of a nearly-crushing commecial slump that had been haunting them for five years, during which bassist Tom Petersson had left the band and had been replaced by Jon Brant. It was difficult to compete with the fast paced changes in popular music culture, especially when they were beginning to be seen (unfortunately and incorrectly) as a band of the past. Because of this, Standing On The Edge slipped through the cracks, allowing some really fine moments to go almost completely unnoticed, with the better known (and outstanding) track "Tonight It's You" as the only real exception.
Several songs come to mind, such as the bluesy and dancable "How About You," a tight song of perfect length, clocking in at just under three minutes. Although some criticize the use of synthesizers in this album, the synthesizers enhance rather than impede this track. There is also "This Time Around," a fresh and uplifting song which contains some of Rick Nielsen's most gorgeous guitar work. "Cover Girl" is also attractive as a fast-paced song with nice vocals by Robin Zander.
The fact that "Love Comes" never became widely known is a real tragedy. The 30 second sample on this page does not do it justice - it is one of the most inspired and outstandingly sincere songs ever written by the band (and for those who have heard the hired songwriter rumor, that person [M. Radice] is not a credited participator on this track as he is on the others). It is hard for me to deny while listening to it that it possibly could have made the top 10 if it had been promoted more as a single.
A few of the tracks are likely to come accross as flawed on the first listen (the reason I give a 4 instead of 5) - mainly the synthesizers in "This Time Around" and the title track, and the gratuitous effects (vocal and other) in "She's Got Motion," "Little Sister," "Rock All Night," and "Wild Wild Women" employed (often inappropriately) to reinforce the strong sexual themes of these songs (which may be a turn-off for some).
Despite these details, ALL of the tracks have great moments, and they all can be enjoyed, and very much so. The thing to keep in mind is that this is not an album that can be appreciated easily for most people the first time listening to it. One must hear it several times over a long period to let it ripen. Some of the songs (less so the ones mentioned in the fifth paragraph) have a very comforting kind of style and feel, a kind of peace and calm that is even reflected in the attractive cover art, but to enjoy all the tracks an unusual approach is needed based on the unusual circumstances that make this album exactly what it is.

The surprise success of "At Budokan" bumped this album, which was already complete, to the back burner while the hits ran their course. Likely because of a budding backlash from the post Budokan overexposure and increased expectations, "Dream Police" took an unjust drubbing at the time. But it was really the sound of the band evolving. The almost disco thump of "Gonna Raise Hell" and the nightmare vision of the title track proved Cheap Trick still had the brains, "Way Of The World" and "Need Your Love" provided the brawn.
It was just that the band had become so competent that some of the edgy charm had slipped away. "Voices" was the kind of ballad that Cheap Trick might not have been able to pull off prior to this, and there were a few who viewed this kind of open balladeering as selling out. They missed the point.
Cheap Trick was exploring their range on "Dream Police." Be that in Robin Zander's polished vocal on "Voices" or in that Tom Petersen took to the mike for the stunning "I Know What I Want," "Dream Police" became a showcase for the boys from Rockford IL. If you compare the Tricksters' sound here to new wave acts like Blondie and the Cars that were now in the same arena (Blondie's "Eat To The Beat" arrived roughly the same time as "Dream Police" and covers a lot of the same ground), you'll see how "Dream Police" remains an excellent album from a band in their prime.
For the bonus tracks, I actually like the live material, particularly Tom's live stand on "I Know What I Want." The "no strings" version of the title cut is a misnomer, essentially it's just a demo. Regardless, "Dream Police" is a great record, and I am glad to have the brighter and better remaster.

All Shook Up Review

This album is a lot better than most people give it credit for, this from a musicians point of view - maybe it sounds different to me because I was a fan of the band from nearly the beginning. Another step down the "heavy production path" that was taking them farther away from their roots as a straight up rock band.
Still, you can't really go wrong with George Martin at the helm and Rick must've been in absolute heaven at this point of his life. Not only was he working with George Martin but around this same period he and Tom had worked with John Lennon on early recordings of Double Fantasy. I would have to assume Rick was on cloud 9 at about this time. The production is pretty lush, there is a consistency throughout the album that I really like. Even when there are strings they are not sappy arrangements like those found on the Dream Police album. The arrangements really fit the songs and this is what George Martin brings to the plate so well.
This re-mastered version "un-muddies" some of the tunes and brings back a broader spectrum of sound and better separation.
On to the songs -
Stop This Game - A really great song that sets the tone for the whole album - there's some great bass work by Tom Peterson going on throughout this song. It's very subtle but he sets some melodies of his own that play against some of vocal lines. Very cool.
Just Got Back - a very good rocker, if produced differently it would have fit well on Heaven Tonight
Baby Loves To Rock - pretty average. the best part is probably the solo section where Rick is doing his "Comedy Guitar" schtick and you get a nice earful of 12 string bass in one gap. You just never know about Rick Nielsen . . . . he's completely capable of tearing off fiery guitar solos where he can make the guitar wail and groan. . . . but sometimes he just likes to go corny and throw in a goof off solo. That's Rick.
Can't Stop It But I'm Gonna Try - This is actually a cool song. Under-rated. It's got a great melody to the verses and even a little snippet of the Donovan "Sunshine Superman" melody on the "and don't think I ever think about you" lines. I didn't care for the song much for years and then after years of not hearing it - I loved it.
World's Greatest Lover - well this is just an amazing song. Can't say enough about how moving and beatiful a love song this is.
High Priest Of Rythmic Noise - One of my 2 favorite songs on the album. This cacophony of organized mayhem is just one of the coolest tunes to crank up loud and shout along with in the car. Love the piano getting pounded on in the background wall of noise - complete chaos.
Love Comes A-Tumblin' Down - my OTHER favorite track on the album. This song shreds from the opening drum beats to Rick's "one note" solo. Robin's vocals just rip and the lyrics are a pastiche of classic 50's & 60's rock songs.
I Love You Honey But I Hate Your Friends - Don't care for the song itself much - but Tom Peterson just goes ape on bass on this one - and it's hard to miss since the bass is mixed right in your face throughout. Love the bass line, not crazy about the song.
Go For The Throat - not great. not poor. Tom's bass is front and center again and really takes the lead role.
Who d'King - Cheap Trick's answer to Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk". Kinda fun. I'm glad it's on there.
Then there are the Bonus Tracks from Found All the Parts.
Everything Works if You let It - is a fun pop tune.
Daytripper - ROCKS. It may be one of the best Beatles covers by anyone EVER.
Can't Hold On - is a great moody live track. A nicely written piece of music by Rick.
Such A Good Girl - Cheap Trick Pop the way few bands can write and sing it. So catchy you can't stand it.
Take Me I'm Yours - Very indicative of early, EARLY Cheap Trick when they were still "finding themselves". Not a bad song - not great.
All Shook Up may not be everyone's cup of tea but it has moments of pure rock brilliance with a consistent sound that ties it all together.

Dunno, I'm a big Cheap Trick fan and can't deny that GREATEST HITS delivers what it promises. As much as I like the band, it's my opinion that most of Cheap Trick's hits isn't among their best songs. For example, "Tonight It's You" is my least favorite tune from their dynamite album STANDING ON THE EDGE, yet it was a hit single. If all you want is the top forty music, pick up Cheap Trick's GREATEST HITS. For those willing to listen more, try Cheap Trick's box set SEX AMERICA. The four CD set includes all but maybe two of the GREATEST HITS selections and serves up a lot more of Cheap Trick at its best.

I'm glad this came out with a reorganized sequence, because Cheap Trick's cover of "Magical Mystery Tour" is one of the worst songs they have ever recorded. By bumping it to the close of this CD where you can just hit eject and pass it by, you're better off. Using a live version of "Clock Strikes Ten" gives you a much better opening idea to what Cheap Trick, in their heyday, was really about. Loud fast fun!
It's also a sweet victory for Cheap Trick that their late 80's comeback material holds up pretty well next to their classics from the 70's. "Tonight It's You" should have been the hit, instead of the band having to hire songwriters to get "The Flame" for. We must also not forget the obvious...any album that contains the amazing "Surrender" and "I Want You To Want Me" is worth owning.
ON THE OTHER HAND: The "Authorized Greatest Hits" contains a couple other strong selections ("Walk Away" and "Stop This Game" most notably). The main reason I would suggest having THIS version of the greatest hits is for the studio version of "The Flame." ("Authorized Greatest Hits" substitutes it with a live version.) Otherwise I'd wholeheartedly recommend passing on this version for "A.G.H."

Cheap Trick: Sgt. Pepper Live (2009) Review

Cheap Trick: Sgt. Pepper Live (2009)

This is an excellent concert performed by Cheap Trick, along with a few guest vocalists and a full backing orchestra doing the entire Sergeant Pepper's album, pretty much note-perfect. Special mention needs to go to Tom Petersen's bass-playing which, to me, was perhaps the most impressive part of the whole concert - he really had his work cut out for him doing Paul's bass parts from that album and he did not disappoint! The end song/encore of "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End" was superb, especially Bun E.'s drum solo. One observance: I thought Rick's guitar sound on "Good Morning Good Morning" and "SPLHCB (Reprise)" was too soft - it didn't have the sting of the original guitars on The Beatles' classic but I think he was simply trying not to duplicate the record. That aside, this was a great concert with Robin in fine voice, and the backing band and full orchestra doing an awesome job. Beatles/Cheap Trick fans need to definitely pick this up!

Filmed in Sydney 2/10/88 following strong sales of the Band's "Lap of Luxury" LP in Australia & a successful tour "Downunder" in April 1988. I attended one of Cheap Trick's performances at a Melbourne venue called "The Palace" in April '88 and this video offering brings back the memories with a vengence. Bun E. lets rip with the drum intro to "Just Got Back" and the audience are left in no doubt they're in for some rock and roll when Rick appears and crunches his guitar with Pete Townsend like glee. There is not a dull moment on this video and the highlights, I guess, are a matter of personal taste; but for mine "If You Want My Love" (Rick invites us to join in)and the powerhouse three song finale in "I Want You To Want Me", "Surrender" & "Auf Wiedersehen" whip the audience to a fever pitch and certainly gets the viewer pumped and wanting more. "Top of the World", "Dream Police", California Man" are included and "The Flame" gives the girls' tear ducts a workout. There may be plenty of people who have no prior interest in Cheap Trick but I am convinced that once they see the Band live, many are converted and few are left unmoved by the sheer power, presence and LOUDNESS of a truly original outfit. In the words of Rick Nielsen "...I'm conviced it's an addiction too, I feel just great again." Buy it and get into Cheap Trick - I know I have.

I've been a Cheap Trick fan since 1977 & this DVD is the best glimpse into the band members' personalities I've ever seen. The interviews are just total fun & I found myself laughing out loud several times. Tom Petersson in particular is hilarious. The concert scenes from Japan are fine as well and you get to hear several songs from Special One that will never see the light of day in the States. Watch for the excellent footage of the orginal Budokan concert also. My favorite scene in this DVD is Rick & Robin standing outside the legendary Budokan hall remembering their glory days there. Hey Cheap Trick fans, buy this!
