I would like to inform you that there was nothing wrong with this video in my opinion. As for the color on the film being poor - what do you expect people? The footage was shot between 1969 and 1972 cameras were not as high tech as they are today!! The original documentary that was filmed by Allen Miner in the summer of '69 for the US State Department was not filmed as intended because he met opposition from a lot of the promoters of Mahalia's concert that year. But he put together the footage from the concerts, her press conferences, her rehearsals and even her wake and funeral on this tape after her passing, to give fans a glimpse as to who Mahalia was; her beliefs; her faith and her dedication to singing the gospel. I loved it. Having seen Mahalia perform years ago we never really got to see the human side of her much. You know, the everyday hardworking Mahalia. It also gives you a glimpse of the Holy Ghost filled singer who could make the most convinced of atheists shout amen. If you don't believe me, watch the video and watch her sing "Great Gettin Up Mornin'" or "I Thank God" or even "Just A Closer Walk With Thee"...Mahalia Jackson does not deliver a testimony...she is a testimony...a living witness to how God can take someone small and insignificant and make her great!! And she brings out her gratitude in every song she has ever sung...this video is no exception to that fact. Buy the tape folks!!!!

Johnny Cash - Live From Austin TX (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)I just picked this DVD up. I skimmed through it once, watching the hit songs. But it was when I really watched it all the way throught that I discovered how really good it is. Some of the songs I was not familiar with are among the best on the DVD, particularly John Prine's "Sam Stone" and also "Let Him Roll". I was glad to see "The Fourth Man" on the DVD as I remember the song from an LP that I have.
Having June Carter Cash and the Carter Family on the DVD is a plus. The affection and chemistry between Johnny and June is obvious. One other thing that makes this DVD special for me is that I saw him in concert at about this time (1987) when the record companies weren't too interested in him, but he was still immensely popular with the public. The DVD brings back nice memories.
I steered clear of the "Live at Montreux" because of reports of poor sound quality. This DVD does not suffer from any lack of audio or visual quality.

(More customer reviews)If you're a Sting fan or just a fan of great music, this DVD is for you. I've seen Sting in concert 3 times. This tops anything I've ever heard. Crystal clear picture and sound, insightful interviews (not too long), and priceless music. This DVD has 17 songs on it. And if I had to pick a favorite, I could not. Although, the rendition of Dead Man's Rope almost made me cry (and I'm a grown man) lol. There are also 3 songs I've never heard on this... That Sinking Feeling, All Would Envy, and Like a Beautiful Smile. All good, but the latter being awesome. This is a no brainer... just buy it. Enjoy!

(More customer reviews)"Praise and Blame" is Tom Jones's first gospel album. It is not a gospel album in the usual sense; it is more in the sense of a Buddy Miller or Bob Dylan gospel album (and the most apt comparison for this CD might well be Buddy Miller's "Universal United House of Prayer"). Speaking of Dylan, this set opens with a gorgeous rendition of Dylan's "What Good Am I?" Jones's take on this song rivals another wonderful version several years back by Solomon Burke. In addition to "What Good Am I?" we get a marvelous cover of Billy Joe Shaver's "If I Give My Soul" (taken at a slower tempo than the original Shaver version), Susan Werner's "Did Trouble Me" (a modern masterpiece), John Lee Hooker's "Burning Hell," and The Staple Singers' "Don't Knock." Adding to these more modern songs Jones also goes back to Rosetta Tharpe and Mahalia Jackson. The arrangements are appropriately and often hauntingly spare. It is amazing and pleasing to note how Jones's enormous musical gifts are still very much intact at 70 and after nearly a half-century of performing. "Praise and Blame" is among the four best albums of Jones's career. Any Tom Jones fan will have to have this CD in his collection. Fans of gosepl music and blues music should delight in it as well.

It's him bearing his soul, singing from the heart, telling it like it is.

Live In London Review

(More customer reviews)Leonard Cohen is still a magnificent performer, even at 73-years old, and this concert captures that fact wonderfully. This two-disc cd set was recorded live at the concert in London at the O2 Arena on July 17th, 2008. Sony has done a marvelous job in putting this package together. Both cds are filled to maximum capacity and Amazon's tracklisting above is correct. There are several nice photographs of the event in the included booklet with liner notes by John Aizlewood.
The performance is spectacular on this set and very typical of the level of quality the current world tour has been regularly achieving at various venues. The backing singers and band members are all in top form and Leonard himself sounds in good voice. Sharon Robinson and the Webb sisters provide background vocals, while Roscoe Beck, Neil Larsen, Javier Mas, Bob Metzger, Dino Soldo, and Rafael Bernando Gayol comprise the band. Leonard throws out some light banter at times and probably is too gracious in the regular and profuse compliments he gives out to his supporting players.
On a technical level the recording is very good and sounds better than most live cds. The cds are mastered by Bob Ludwig, a well-known and respected mastering engineer. He did a fine job here as the music shows no signs of overcompression or clipping. The audience is well-behaved and generally can not be heard during the songs, though vigorous applause greets each song and Leonard's sly jokes.
The set captures the live magic of Leonard Cohen's current tour with many fine performances. While not every song on here is the definitive live version, many are great like "Tower Of Song" and "Who By Fire". Anyone with a marginal interest in the music of Leonard Cohen needs to pick up this cd set. It is essential in my estimation as a document of Leonard Cohen's current live performances. Hopefully more dates from this tour will be officially released.

Rick Wakeman - The Classical Connection (1991) Review

(More customer reviews)As a keyboardist who group up on Tony Banks (Genesis), Rick Wakeman (Yes), and Keith Emerson (ELP), I of course relished the chance to listen and critic this DVD. I already own Rick's other DVD "Rick Wakeman Live" and I have to say it is better. This DVD has some wonderful songs, but not enough of them (only 7 total). You can tell that the concert contained many more songs but were edited out. Rick of course was great, but it could have had some more songs. The sound (5.1) was good, but not stupendous. The video was good and definitely provided some good shots of Wakeman. Elenor Rigby was the best song showing Wakeman's dexterity and creativity. In conclusion, if you are a serious fan, you must have this for your collection. If you are mildly interested, you can get by without it and buy "Rick Wakeman Live" instead.

(More customer reviews)In the mid-60's Tom Jones flew to the top of the charts with the classic "It's Not Unusual" and it was clear that this unusual talent and very soulful singer was going to be around for a long, long time! "Reload" is a masterpiece that was released in the late 90's and this is Tom Jones finest ever and a real artistic triumph that went to #1 in Europe and should have done the same in the United States but due to the unimaginative programming that now dominates our airwaves this unfortunately did not happen causing a great musical loss to the American public. Opening funky and soulful with "Burning Down The House", it is clear that Tom Jones is in peak form and the center of these guest artist "duet" tracks. A rocking and blusey "Mama Told Me Not To Come" tops the original and the Lenny Kravitz "Are You Gonna Go My Way" is a hard rocking duet with Robbie Williams that is classic with each singer at their absolute peak!!! Tom performed this great rocker solo on the VH1 Diva's concert a couple of years ago and the huge audience of thousands moved in unison to the rhythm as Mr. Jones gave the performance of a lifetime and the audience greeted this by giving Tom a full house standing ovation. A lush James Bond like arrangement on "All Mine" features a haunting vocal while Tom is mesmerizing on a ethereal "Sunny Afternoon" which flows into a soulful "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone" which all again feature stellar performances from Mr Jones. Fun and sensual is a very catchy "Sexbomb" which sounds like what should have been a hit and would have been in better musical times..."You Need Love Like I Do" is a funky romp and Heather Small is a great duet partner. Every so many years comes a classic song with the perfect singer who creates a unique and unforgettable listening experience~Brook Benton comes to mind with the haunting classic "Rainy Night In Georgia" and the the best since with this kind of great atmospheric mood is the Tom Jones original "Looking Out My Window" which is a brilliant bluesy vocal and spellbinding performance full of character and raw soul. Van Morrison and Tom Jones are great duet partners on the soulful "Sometimes We Cry" although it is clear that Tom is the one with the masterful voice. Tom is hot and full of fire with The Pretenders in the rocking "Lust For Life" that is hard rocking and full of interesting tempo changes and by the time you get to Tom's biting vocal with Barenaked Ladies in the unique "Little Green Bag", you will be wondering where was the Grammy Awards when it came to this incredibly great musical masterpiece that is the crowning achievement of a long and brilliant career and "Reload" should have done for Tom Jones what "Private Dancer" did for Tina Turner and would have with any promotion at all...more vocal brilliance is featured on the masterful "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" where Tom does a stunning duet with Simply Red and the effect is riveting. "She Drives Me Crazy" is a driving rocker with a brilliant arrangement that has great tempo changes and a romanatic duet with Natalie Imbruglia "Never Tear Us Apart" is magical and hauntingly beautiful. How was this classic work overlooked in the United States????? A winning duet with the standard "Baby It's Cold Outside" has never sounded quite as warm and engaging as it does here making this the version that should be heard yearly of this great holiday classic...closing with the traditional standard "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", this is the definitive version of this classic as Mr. Jones pours his soul into this making "Sometimes" a emotional and riveting experience that is incomparably great! For anyone who enjoys a great singer who is at his absolute peak, DO NOT MISS THIS AWESOME WORK as this is Mr. Jones at his greatest and Thank You Tom Jones for a magical musical experience!
