(More customer reviews)As the opening track on "Ray of Light", "Drowned World" evokes Annie Lennox's "Money Can't Buy It" from DIVA; "Famous Faces/Far off Places/Trinkets I can Buy/No Ferris Wheel/No Heart to Steal..." is a self-effacing take on the pitfalls of the material girl in the material world; Annie espouses," Now hear this/pay attention to me/I'm a rich white girl/let me amplify/I have diamonds/Have you heard about gold..." The presence of William Orbit's electronic background at the climax toward the song's end reenforces the effect Annie Lennox and her producer Stephen Lipson may have had on the genesis of Madonna's foray into electronica. The fade that follows after Madonna's litany on her "material world" is eerily familiar of the same fade that follows Annie's litany.In any event, this is the song that ropes you into the awesome Madonna "Ray of Light" album which takes us from the material "world" to the spiritual realms once track 5 drops. This track is the wallpaper and the departure point for the album, and it does so in this regard very effectively.Why it was never released as single in the U.S. is beyond me.

This CD went to #3 in the ARIA charts in its first week, and three weeks later on December 14th 1998, it went to #1!
I was a tad sceptical when promoters announced that our Livvy was teaming up with Farnsy and Mr Warlow for a concert tour. I should have known better. Sure, this three of a kind played to full houses, but their stage delivery was dynamic. I cannot remember being more entertained by a show than one that 22,000 fans saw at Newcastle Ent. Centre. Although carefully choreographed, the concert was fun, fresh and funny. While this album captures touching solo tidbits (AW's "This Is The Moment", ON-J's "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and JF's "Every Time You Cry"), the live duets and trio medleys are downright delectable. Livvy and Warlow, who both overcame cancer, take listeners through their recovery on "The Long & Winding Road". Livvy and Farnham ... on his knees during her Grease transformer tune "You're The One That I Want". Three-way highlights include "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "Let Me Be There", "Phantom Of The Opera" and "A Little Bit More Love."

Rush: A Show of Hands (1989) Review

(More customer reviews)It's always good to see a live Rush video, but this video's production could have been a lot better. The way it was filmed kind of makes me dizzy at times. It almost looks like it was filmed with hand-held cameras. The video is only 90 minutes, so they left off a lot of songs like Mystic Rhythms, Red Lenses, Subdivisions, and Limelight, which were all performed during that tour. On the other hand, it contains a lot of songs that were left off the cd, like Prime Mover, YYZ, La Villa Strangiato, The Spirit Of Radio, and Tom Sawyer. This video would have been better if it was the entire concert and if they used better cameras, but nontheless, any true Rush fan, like myself, will still appreciate this video. Let's just hope the Different Stages video will look a little better. (if it ever gets released)

Natalie Merchant - VH1 Storytellers (1998) Review

(More customer reviews)This priced just right release is the perfect gift for the 10,000 Maniacs or Natalie Merchant fan. I have this DVD and think it's great. Natalie opens the set with a short version of These Are Days (the full length performance is also included on the set). Her Storytellers segment is more musical than stories as she alternates between performances with high lighting to other performances with low lighting to set the mood. Remember, Storytellers is a one hour show, so don't expect outfit changes and real extended versions of the song. The bonus tracks on the DVD are the full performance of "These Are Days," and "Life is Sweet." Another bonus is that you can choose your audio setting and choose the music only setting. It's a great intimate setting and the set list is okay. Personally, I would have loved to see Natalie sing "Like The Weather," or "Trouble Me," since a few songs from her 10,000 Maniacs days made the set list, but oh well. It's great though and one thing I thought was cool is on the back of the booklet included inside of the set is a Natalie Merchant discography as well as a VH-1 Storytellers Timeline.

Vol. 2, Hard Knock Life Review

(More customer reviews)There is a lot of hate around this album, mainly because it was the one that brought Jay-Z into the mainstream circuit.
It isn't as good as his previous 2 releases, Reasonable Doubt being certified classic by just about everyone who has heard it, and In My Lifetime being the most underrated album in the last decade, but it certainly does not disappoint.
'Hard Knock Life', the title track, won Jay-Z critical acclaim and heavy airplay all over America. It samples the chorus from the musical Annie, and with Jay-Z over the top of a simple drum and bass beat, it is an instant classic.

The next 2 songs, 'Ride Or Die' and 'If I Should Die' take it back to his hustling days, but give it a more mainstream feel than what he produced on his debut. The only criticism here is the theme of death being done twice in a row, but both songs are tight and produced well.
'Nigga What, Nigga Who' takes Jay-Z way back to his very early days when he used to rap as fast as Busta Rhymes, a style we virtually never see on his released work. The lyrics are great, delivered fast, and the collabo with Jaz O is a nice touch. Overall, a very underrated single, definitely deserved to perform better.
The next song, 'Money Cash Hoes', is definitely the beginning of the new Jay-Z focus. In later music, he enjoys flexing his masoginistic muscles, as well as flaunting the fact he is extremely rich. He got a lot of criticism over this song, and despite that and the theme of the song, it is still solid, and keeping in with Jay-Z's changing lifestyle. Good verse from DMX on there too.
The rest of the album is extremely solid. 'A Week Ago' showcases Jay-Z's storytelling ability, which we don't see enough anymore, 'Can I Get A...' is a great song, in which Jay expresses his dislike for gold diggers, and the bonus track, 'Money Ain't A Thang' is one of the best songs on the album.
Sure, Jay-Z has changed from rapping exclusively about hustling and snitching, but he is only trying to keep it real, and at the moment, what's real in Jay-Z's life is money, bitches and fame. Doesn't deserve any criticism, a great release.

Wrote it herself: Brandy wrote almost all of the songs on this CD, which I appreciate musically, because many artists are just in a hurry to make a CD and sell it, so they don't even try to write their own songs. Brandy does try, and succeeds enormously. 4. It's not all happy-ever-after: Too many R&B and pop singers are just spreading around the fake "ooh baby, I finally found you and everything's perfect and we'll live happily ever after together with absolutely no problems at all." Life's not like that, and music is usually about life- at least R&B music is. Brandy covers all emotions: not just feeling happy that you found your "one true love." 3. Good tunes: Not only are the feelings and emotions in the lyrics great, but she has also written great tunes to fit them. Not many song-writers can do both, and it enhances the CD so much. 2. Good Role-Model: Brandy isn't one of those female singers that gets up on stage to show off her body. She is actually wearing real clothes on the CD cover, and the songs aren't sex-centered. 1. All Clean: While keeping the real rythym and blues feel, Brandy still keeps the lyrics clean. There's absolutely no profanity in the whole CD at all. Instead of comparing Brandy with Monica and other female R&B singers, enjoy the music: You can't have too much of a good thing, so why complain about artists singing the same type of music?

Double Live Review

With music roots that go back to his love for Kiss when he was younger, it is obvious through this double live album that he tries to emulate what Kiss did on their own Double Live albums, and through their shows. And you know what, Garth succeeds.
Nothing about this double live album is dull. Garth shows through his music what a true performer he is, and you only need to listen to this album to understand why everyone raves about his showmanship.
With classics that range from Friends in Low Places to newer songs such as The American Honky Tonk Bar association Garth brings a little rock to his country, and a little country to his rock, and he does it exceptionally well.
Garth brings his own style to country.
In each song he performs he speaks volumes with emotion. Songs like "We shall be free" touch the soul completely.
Other songs such as "The American Honky Tonk-Bar Association" and his exceptional cover and redo of Aerosmith's "The Fever" has one tapping their foot along to the beat of the music.
Whether he is being cocky and confident, or humble and tearful, through and through he brings emotion to the music, and it is heard not only through his voice, and the lyrics but through the crowd, and the atmosphere.
Songs such as "The Thunder rolls" and "Friends in low places" are two songs, in which the extra verses can only be heard in concert and the response to those extra verses is enough to hear it.
Garth's connection with his fans is obvious, and what is even more obvious is his own enjoyment at seeing how much his fans love his shows.
And it wouldn't be right without Trisha Yearwood singing a duet with Garth, as she does on "Wild is the wind".
This Cd is a must to all Garth fans. And for those who aren't Garth fans this is the album that will either make you one, or not.
The best way to listen to this is to turn down the lights, turn up the music, close your eyes and let Garth take you there.
