Melodic and relevant, the Pet Shop Boys have created a musical landscape of city living, including the greatest techno-country song ever, You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk. This cd has a definite night-time vibe to it: urban, lonely, and sometimes hopeless, and but with just the right comnbination of irony and hope to reassure us that it could all work out. Also included is a shockingly good duet with Kylie Minogue, which had me checking the liner notes to see who she was. It will never happen, but one hopes that this record will finally allow the Pet Shop Boys to be recognized for what they are: revolutionary, contemporary artsists who have been making masterful records for their subculture for almost fifteen years. But you know what, forget the recognition of the massess, we night walkers would rather keep them for ourselves...

Pop Til You Drop Review

If you're looking for the ultimate summer jam, the A-teens are your best choice. Ever since their 1998 debut, ABBA GENERATION, the A-Teens have been THE source for pure teen pop. Though US reputation isn't exactly where it should be, the A-teens are mega superstars worldwide... and they deserve it.
POP TILL YOU DROP, their junior release, is the best yet. They have Britney's beats - without the sensuality, N*sync's lyrics - minus the tacky boyband charisma, and voice of their own. This album has set the A*teens apart from other bands. They open up with a great dance track, Floorfliller, slow it down a bit with songs like Can't help falling in love and hi/goodbye, Latin out with Cross My Heart, and add their own techno/80's/r&b vibe to songs like Slam, Oh Oh. Yea, and Closer to perfection. Unlike Teen Spirit, the ballads on Pop Till You Drop are uplifting.
But who are the A-teens? Before this album, they were just a nameless face in the croud of "wannabe popstars". I can see this band getting a lot of mileage out of this album... if only they could get play on MTV. At least they get the help of Alice Cooper. If not this time, it's certain that the A-Teens will get the respect they deserve for this hot as summer, fresh, and youthful album.

Bring Ya to the Brink (Snys) Review

Bring Ya to the Brink (Snys)

Cyndi Lauper's career has seen her success fluctuate from dizzying highs to off-the-scale lows, with a startlingly diverse artistic palette and long gaps between albums doubtless accounting for the lion's share of the inconsistency. She flourished as a pop culture ingénue with her eccentric, flamboyant image, but this contrasted with her more inherent identity as a state of the art song stylist and inventive, highly skilled songwriter and musician. Now a quarter century has passed and the average person is still at a loss for words to properly define Lauper. Regardless, she has never sounded more at home on brand new dance floor-ready studio album "Bring Ya to the Brink." The girl who just wanted to have fun is either having the time of her life or doing a damn fine job of making listeners believe it.
A definite nod to her core fanbase in the LGBT community, the theme of "Bring Ya to the Brink" does not showcase the New York native's soaring range as her 2003 chestnut covers collection "At Last" did, for example. Rather, it boasts frenetic, club-ready beats and propulsive, repetitious melodies, replete with disco ball imagery. That is exactly as it is supposed to be. From the funky, loquacious opener "High and Mighty" with its temperamental synths to the sweeping gust of wind that is "Set Your Heart," the album is wall to wall uptempo energy, making it an ideal summer disc.
Some could say that Lauper is aping Madonna, whose last two LPs were aimed straight at nightclubs and dance floors. However, the key difference is that "Bring Ya to the Brink" neither flagrantly tips the hat to the past nor makes an earnest effort to keep things trendy or Top 40 savvy. Instead, Lauper mixes together 80's new wave stylings with easy, effusive beats that are nothing if not indicative of the late 2000s to create a sound neither retro nor modern, but simply the genesis of her atypical artistic vision. The most important thing, however, is that it never fails to entertain.
Hooks run aplenty on "Echo," a bittersweet slice of Eurodance, as well as lead single "Same Ol' Story," a 12"-length gem which is currently climbing the club charts thanks to its fluffy production values reminiscent of ace 70's collaborations between Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder. Indeed, as Lauper declares on the sweaty, propulsive "Give It Up," "I've got to get back to the floor!"
With this new direction she has her cake and eats it too, as she continues to make heady statements and social commentary where she sees fit in spite of the levity that surrounds. "Lyfe," with its memorable chorus ("Lyfe/It can shake ya/It can break ya/It can bring ya to the brink") serves as a prime example, as does "Raging Storm," a meditation on problems inherent in the values of today's cultural landscape:
"Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief/You can fool some people, but you can't fool me/Harbor all the hate and greed/Threaten demise of democracy/There's a raging storm in a troubled sea/But you're clouding my mind with celebrity."
Second single "Into the Nightlife" is the most instantly addicting with its gyrating snyths, stomp-on-glass production values and cheeky, sexual lyrics ("Shirtless wonders wreck my sight under the light"), providing the most potent chance for a crossover to pop radio, while "Rocking Chair," a frothy, mercurial collaboration with Basement Jaxx, provides a mighty hook and eye-popping lyrics. It's a joy to hear Lauper wrap her vocals around its juicy, uncontainable melody.
"Lay Me Down" with its haunting, inescapable melody and evocative lyrics is the album's arguable highlight, while "Rain on Me" closes the disc with a wistful, bittersweet high note that is exemplary of Lauper's unique voice as a songwriter.
"Bring Ya to the Brink" continues Lauper's career with another top notch release. Each track is a gem with no trace of filler. Lauper never fails to reveal new aspects of her unique, thoroughly entertaining talents as both a singer and songwriter, and this new release keeps the bar raised high.

I love the Spice Girls but I didnt get to see them on their reunion tour. Thankfully this CD made it a little better, it contains almost all their best known songs plus 2 brand new ones. I love HEADLINES although it did take alot of listens for me to really get use to it. Voo Doo is good also, it is pretty old school Spice Girls. Awesome CD!!!

After much speculation and rumour the Spice Girls announced their reunion tour and Greatest Hits album to the world's media this summer. Fifty five million records sold, an astonishing 9 UK no. 1 singles, three back-to-back Christmas no. 1 singles and with 'Wannabe' the biggest selling single ever by an all female group, the Spice Girls have very little to prove. The band are never out of the media spotlight, the British tabloids and women's magazines adore them and the British public can't get enough. 3.5 million people worldwide have registered for tour tickets, 1 million of those were from the UK.

First off let me start off by saying that this is NOT a personal attack on Tiesto, I doubt that he will even read this but just to offer my perspective and opinion on this album. I have given prior 5 star reviews on Tiesto so I am not hating on him or the album.
This album is strictly intended for the mainstream, notice all of the collaborations noticeably with Nelly Furtado and with various up and coming artists. The Goal is to make Dance/Electronica music more known in the US, where while making strides, is still in its infancy and who better than to have a household name like Tiesto make an attempt at reaching this feat and make the general public more aware of this genre. Tiesto has reached an amazing amount of success for one reason, his music! No doubt the man is a great businessman as well but he has built legions of fans throughout the world by his great DJ sets and tracks like Silence, and albums like In My Memory, Just Be, etc. This album however is completely different and is NOT how Tiesto became who he is today. This is a completely new direction and perhaps a huge gamble as he aims to please and attract a new legion of listeners while perhaps turning the shoulder to his fanbase (I certainly feel this way). I can understand wanting to be different and not sounding the same but you can stay faithful to your genre without falling into that pitfall.
I feel as though the album sounds incomplete, extremely cheesy a bit rushed and the collaborations are there to attract attention but in and of themselves have no substance or identity. The production level on this record has gone lower than previous efforts and that is the biggest disappointment of all. The tracks sound extremely simple and predictable with the exception of fresh fruit and the title track Kaleidoscope. If you listen to his Club Life series then you know that there is way and I mean WAY better music being produced nowadays by up and coming artists. I mean when I think of the name Tiesto, I expect top quality and nothing less then the best. However this is not the case with this album by no means. There will no doubt be people that disagree with me and perhaps love this album for what it is and thats fine but for those that have been fans since the magik days know that he is walking away from who we became to know and love and perhaps for good. That is fine with me, if you wanna be a sell out that's ok, if you want to be commercial that is fine too, but please just don't suck in the process of doing it! I say this because this albums production level is very low. Go listen to Above and Beyond, DJ Shah, Airbase or Remixes by "The Blizzard" or Richard Durand and you will know exactly what im talking about!
By the way what is up with the cover photo!?! Could you possible scream "EGO" any louder!?! Seriously, massive photo shop work done, its unreal. Also they make him look 21, talk about propaganda! What is up with that pose? By the way have you heard the actual lyrics to these songs? One only has to sing along to realize that half the time the music makes no sense. How about the song titles, wtf!?!
Louder than Boom? Bend it like you dont care? You are my diamond? Who came up with these title names? Get out of here with that Shhh!
Regardless of my dislike with this album, I still have tons of respect for Tiesto for his previous work and because the man is a phenomenal DJ and I support him whenever in town. But boy this album is a massive letdown. Perhaps its a personal demand from the current label he is working with to shape this new sound or whatever but certain artists cant handle commercial success, I.E. Metallica, while the genre is different the concept remains the same as they get bigger and labels demand different styles there music isnt as great. I know he mentioned that LA had influenced his work but let me tell you right now this is NOT L.A.! The clubs are not bumping this type of music.
Im really hoping this is just an experiment and that this is just a fluke. Im not expecting Tiesto to go back to his roots but just to create something better than this. I know he definitely has it in him to do a lot better. Cheers!
