(More customer reviews)I have always been a Gary Puckett fan, and was very excited to learn that a current DVD was available in which he performed several of his big hits. But I do have to say that I held off purchasing it because of some of the negative reviews I read here. But while I have tremendous respect for the reviewers who took the time to share their opinions, reviews and assessments can often be quite subjective, and what someone else thinks may differ significantly from what I think -- in either direction. So I bought the DVD, and I'm very glad that I did. I really enjoyed it, and thought the performance was very good. It was also nice to watch the "back stage" interview, which gave me a new insight on and appreciation of Gary which I had not had from just listening to records (which I still have), cassettes (ditto), and CDs. I guess my take on this is the same as my take on the Gary Lewis and the Playboys DVD which I bought at the same time, and other DVDs like the various Petula Clark ones I have purchased, all of which I have enjoyed -- I consider it a real treat that these legends continue performing and that through the DVDs I have the chance to see them when they do not happen to be performing in my neck of the woods. Do they sound like they did 40 years ago? That would be impossible (as I have proven on my own recent CDs - see www.lawtunes.com). But these current performances and interpretations are a piece of music history and having them available to us is a gift which I for one very much appreciate.

World Warped 3 Live Review

Although it's called World Warped III and contains bands that were on the warped tour in recent years, none of the shows on this disc are recorded from warped tour, most are from clubs and various other shows. Most of the recordings are terrific quality, while others like NOFX appears to be recorded from a bootleg.
If you like Dropkick Murphy's, the first track contains "Barroom Hero" live, with Al Barr singing, it's the best version of this song I've ever heard because the crowd sings along and it's cool to hear Al Barr singing the song, he does a great job.

Platinum Collection Genesis Review

There have been several Genesis compilations released to date: (1) "Turn it On Again - The Hits" is essentially Disc 1 of this 3 disc set, culling most tracks from their hit albums "We Can't Dance" and "Invisible Touch". If you mainly are interested in Genesis for these tunes (ie, Land of Confusion, In Too Deep, Thowing it all Away, No Son of Mine, etc) you can save $10 by simply buying the one-disc set; (2) "Genesis Archive 1967-1975" is mainly live material from early Genesis' magnum opus "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" - for hardcores only; (3) "Genesis Archive 1975-1993" is mainly B-sides and random live cuts from this era of Genesis - also for hardcores only.
THIS compilation is BY FAR the best accumulation of Genesis songs across their entire career, released to date. Disc 1 covers the Phil Collins pop machine years; Disc 2 covers some of their pop years, moving more into their "introspective" period in the early years of Collins as front-man; Disc 3 covers the progressive rock era Peter Gabriel-fronted Genesis from the early '70's.
I would suggest that a "casual" fan of the band buy this set in order to give the tunes on Disc 3 a shot, among other reasons. For those of you who may have NO idea what to expect, and have never listened to other bands like King Crimson or Yes in their early years - these songs are more musically intricate, and generally of greater length, than their pop songs. They are less about hooks and catchy riffs, and more about telling a story, or creating a particular mood. They are more challenging, and less accessible. However, if you're looking for something different, look no further.
For Genesis Hardcore Rabid Fans -
I will not argue over song selection. This is the best anyone could have done over 3 discs. Personally speaking, the collection would have been perfected for me with the exclusion of "Illegal Alien," "Your Own Special Way," and "Calling All Stations" (the latter I like, though it just seems out of context here); and the addition of "Dance on a Volcano" and "One for the Vine." Otherwise, perfect.
Despite what others have noted, I do not detect a significant overall improvement in sound on Discs 1 and 2 over the "definitive edition" remasters released years ago. If there are improvements on certain songs, the effect is minimal, or even innocuous to the quality of the song (ie, sometimes I think they change things just for sake of changing).
However, I believe it's worth shelling out the $20 to buy this album for the improvement on Disc 3. There is a discernable sonic improvement on these cuts, especially for "Cinema Show" and "The Knife" (especially for those of us here in America where the definitive edition remaster of Trespass never made it to this side of the Atlantic!). I should caveat that statement, however, by adding that evidently "Supper's Ready" is not among those tracks newly remastered. It's the same version from the definitive edition remaster of Foxtrot; therefore, if you buy this compilation solely for a new and improved version of this cut, please do not.
Other comments for all -
I'll just add that a cool companion piece to this compilation is the newly released DVD with the same cover, and all of the videos (aptly titled "Cinema Show" - although ironically there was no video released for that particular cut). It is also worth picking up - and incidentally includes certain tracks excluded from the CD's, such as "No Reply at all" and "Man on the Corner" from the Abacab album.

Back in the U.S. Live 2002 Review

(More customer reviews)I was fortunate enough to have seen Paul McCartney in concert twice--once in Dallas on the first leg of the tour (Driving USA), and once in Chicago on the second leg of the tour (Back in the US). It's hard to put into words how unbelievable this concert was. Just being in the presence of possibly the greatest musician of all time is really an indescribable experience. And I'm sure I'm one of the only 16 year olds who has seen Paul McCartney twice in their lifetime.
Paul got up on stage and sang 36 songs, totaling about 2 and a half hours of pure music---that's no intermission, no cheesy dance numbers, or anything like that...and one might think that his voice may have aged with him, but he can without a doubt still sing like no other. He sang songs from the Beatles, Wings, and some of his solo songs from earlier in his career and also more recently, like from his "Driving Rain" album ("Loving Flame," the song he wrote for Heather, is on this album). He sang many timeless Beatles classics including "Hello Goodybe", "Can't Buy Me Love", "All My Loving," "Blackbird," "Lady Madonna," "Yesterday," "Maybe I'm Amazed," "The Long and Winding Road," and "I Saw Her Standing There," just to name a few. Some of the Wings songs were the unbelievably done "Live and Let Die," as well as "Jet," "Band on the Run," and "Coming Up." He also performed a very touching tribute to the late George Harrison by playing "Something" on the ukelele, after telling the crowd that George was a remarkable ukelele player. He also sang "Here Today" in tribute to the late John Lennon, as well as the famous song "My Love" for his late wife Linda. Not only did he sing these songs, but before singing many of them, he talked to the crowd, whether it be giving a history about why the song was written, or entertaining the audience with a funny story from his many travels.
Anybody who is a Paul McCartney fan or a Beatles fan should not think twice about buying this CD. It is a collection of timeless classics that came from the greatest show I've ever seen. Paul McCartney is a legend, and I guarantee this CD will not disappoint you.

Moody Blues: Lovely to See You (2005) (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD is basically the "Set" from the group's 2004 and 2005 tours, give or take a song, so it is very recent and covers the entire Moodies' span from "Tuesday Afternoon" to "December Snow." It's too bad that Ray Thomas isn't with them, but the flute is handled beautifully without him. For a complete concert, this disc may be the best overall. "Red Rocks" seemed to have good energy but in the early part of the concert, they seemed a bit "off," and the audio mix was weak on the vocals. "Hall of Fame" was a little better on the audio mix, but the energy didn't seem to be there and the song list was a bit short. On this latest disc, you get songs that don't appear elsewhere including Graeme's "Higher and Higher" dance, and Justin's "Forever Autumn" rendition. I've bought every Moody Blues DVD I can find, and I think this is the best one of the bunch so far. (And as a bonus, you get a half-hour of interview footage with the 3 remaining Moodies). For those poor souls who bought the Glass Spider or Serious Moonlight DVD I'm sure you haven't noticed much difference from the VHS. This DVD is extra special because of the more recent videos that never made it to USA TV and the stunning clarity of the older material. Yes, LIFE ON MARS is supposed to look like that! We have all years represented here but we still have some of the more oscure stuff missing like DB's '80's soundtrack work with Pat Metheny or Raymond Briggs. Maybe those recordings are owned by someone else and will never see a real release. Now as far as Easter Eggs go...I won't say WHERE but I will say WHAT: full 20 minute Jazzin' For Blue Jean video promo, Russell Harty interview, MTV promo club version of Blue Jean (alternate video), Day In Day Out (extended dance mix video),Seven Years in Tibet (mandarin Version video), Survive (Live paris '99 and more to be discovered. Remember you have 2 discs here...there will be a lot!!

(More customer reviews)This is a model DVD release for a rock band. No corners seem to have been cut! The concert footage itself is very good, the extras are excellent, and there's a lot of care and attention paid to every last detail of the packaging. This probably isn't the best concert in Queen's history, but it's probably the best filmed Queen concert, and that's more than good enough for me. Everything you loved, or hated, or loved to hate about the band is preserved in exceptional detail. It's almost like being there. I prefer this DVD to other filmed Queen concerts, to be honest. Queen were not only first-rate rockers but also fantastic showmen, and Freddie and Brian's showmanship is nothing but captivating. This is one of my favorite concert DVDs, and is well worth a purchase instead of the collections of Queen lip-synched videos also available on the market.

I saw this dvd in the store and it took few days till i bought it- i thought to my self- again , another deep purple dvd - most of it black&white (monochrome), but i admit now, i was wrong- This show - " the Scandinavian , live in denmark march 1972 is a MUST HAVE to any fan. 9 tracks from the machine head live , the only complete visual document of deep purple mk2 concert you can get played ii good quality sound , with good picture quality ( for this days ) ( monochrome only) but i was very surprized- this is great show indeed .The second show was filmed in the concert hall of hofstra university in America 25 min only 3 tracks were kept , good sound quality and very good picture quality ( for this days in colour !!!and you can choose "dts " or Dolby digital 5.0) ( strnge kind of woman, smoke on the water and space truckin.
i personally prefer the "Scandinavian nights " show (copenhagen show)!!! - the best deep purple you can watch - this is the " machine head " live!!! ( you can choose dolby 2.0 - god sound or Dolby digital 5.0). 97 min!!! ( and i didn't talk about the 1 track bnus from 74' show , from California jam (bonus vision )( i bought already the fll show last year).
great dvd , must have , ian paice and ian gillan in their finest , deep purple in their best , i saw Ritchie B in better days ( with dio 1977 germany show " caled also "on stage" in their live album , but i enjoy his efforts also here!!! roger glover always great and Jon lord made good job but we saw Him also in better days... but this dvd is the best visual dvd you can get from this days... i wish to get something like this from scorpions ( "Tokyo tapes ") maybe in some days .... but i can't believe we will ...
Believe me i also thought to my selve i would not buy this DVD but i glad i did!!! ( highway tar , strange kind of woman, child in time ( 17.43 min ) , the mule , lazy , space trackin , also day played " fireball ", "Lucille " and " black night" !

Yes, You Can Go Home - On the Road with Eric Burdon & The Animals Review

(More customer reviews)For anyone who has ever wanted to tour with a band, and see the real backstage life, this DVD is for you. If you're an Eric Burdon fan, that makes this even better.
As the director states, this is not a concert DVD. Rather than experience Eric Burdon from a fan's point of view, you will experience their journey back to their roots as one of the insiders. I felt like I belonged backstage with the band as I watched this DVD. Watching Eric walk the streets of his hometown and reminisce about his memories there gave me a unique perspective into his life.
I also enjoyed watching the band's interaction when there was no audience to perform for. I got a chance to see what they were really like when no one else was around.
All in all, it was a wonderful, matchless experience. If you are an Eric Burdon fan, you must own this DVD.

The video for " I Am a Walrus" is worth having the movie withstanding anything else.
It is aproximately 100% better than any of the crap seen on MTV, MTV2 or Fuse today.
More creative, more inventive with primitive tools.

(More customer reviews)This is a very Good QUEEN film, with no interference from the DORO editing team. The track list may be similar to other concerts on the same tour, but the additions are sufficient to be different and enjoyable.
The documentary inserts are done in a rare style... they do not interfere with the flow of the concert, and as each member of the band is given time in the concert spotlight, we see some documentary footage of the band member in Budapest. And the traditional song that Freddie performs is well received by the crowd. The footage of Freddie travelling up river, past the regal mansions is both funny, and insightful; plus the preparation that Freddy does for the concert is shown in part, and is what seems to be a rare insight into the way Freddy works.
We even get to see a little bit of the seemingly very shy John Deacon ... something only the director of this film has thought to do ( as far as I am aware).
This is not only a Good concert film, but a masterful documentary, handled with the panache that few directors in this genre can do. A pleasure to watch and to listen to. I only hope that Hollywood records will issue this in DVD format under the guidance of Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Like Anthology 1, this CD begins with a John Lennon solo song performed by John with additional music provided by Paul, George, and Ringo. Probably because this is a more complete song, the concept works a little better than on "Free as a Bird".
Beyond that, you get a grabbag of demos, alternative takes, and live tracks from 1965 to early 1968. "Yes It Is" begins the set. Interesting is some of the studio banter like in "I'm Down" (with Paul saying in a pseudo-American accent: "Let's hope this one turns out pretty darn good... Plastic soul, man!") and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" (glass shatters and John mumbles: "Paul's broken a glass broke a glass Paul broke."). There are also never before released songs like "If You've Got Trouble", "That Means a Lot", and "12 Bar Original" (a fun jam in the mold of "Green Onions").
Live performances include television performances of "Yesterday" (with George introducing Paul) and "Help!", "Everybody's Got to Be My Baby" (from the legendary Shea Stadium concert) and "Rock & Roll Music" and "She's a Woman" (from their final 1966 tour). You can hear the Beatles slowly go through the motions in the end on stage as their studio recordings became more complex...
There are only a few outtakes from Rubber Soul, including the heavily sitar drenched "Norwegian Wood" and "...Looking Through You" in its early stage (with a hand clapping intro). The Revolver selections are more generous, with "Tomorrow Never Knows" (which even without all the tape effects sounds bizarre!), "Taxman" with the line "Anybody gotta bitta money" in place of "Uh uh Mr. Wilson... uh uh Mr. Heath", and a mellower slowed down take of "Got to Get You Into...". There are instrumental takes of "Eleanor Rigby" and "...Only Sleeping" (with a vibraphone). It's fun to hear Paul and John giggling while attempting to sing harmonies on "And Your Bird Can Sing"!
CD2 begins with an early demo of "Strawberry Fields", followed by an unused take, then the take which would begin the master we all know (played in its entirety) with Ringo's drum part at the end. "Penny Lane" features an oboe instead of a piccolo trumpet after the 2nd verse and features the closing horn riff which was previously only available on radio promo copies! "A Day In the Life" features John mumbling "sugar plumb fairy" and begins as a simple folk song up to its buildup (you can hear Mal Evans counting down the seconds until the alarm clock), then Paul goofs on the vocals and cusses, and it all concludes with the orchestral buildup. "Good Morning" sounds more rocking than the original. The instrumental take of "Within You Without You" sounds more ethereal than with George's vocals. You also get the complete stereo version of "You Know My Name...". The Magical Mystery Tour outtakes are interesting with Ringo playing a march beat on "Your Mother Should Know". "I Am the Walrus" and "Hello Goodbye" sound different without orchestration. The set concludes with "Lady Madonna" and one of the best takes of "Across the Universe".
Also recommended is the hard-to-find "Real Love" CD single with outtakes of "Yellow Submarine" (featuring a spoken intro by Ringo), "Here, There and Everywhere" and "Baby's In Black" (from a 1965 Hollywood Bowl performance).

The most anticipated of the Anthology series, this disc covers what was arguably the Fab Four's most intensely creative period ('65-'67) when they single-handedly changed the course of popular music. Anthology 2 doesn't disappoint. Outtakes and demos show the building of songs like "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," while the pure pop song writing of Rubber Soul and Help! is also documented, along with the sonic experimentation that characterized Revolver. Even if the legendary proto-metal jam of "What's the New Mary Jane" didn't see the light of day here, there is plenty for any Beatles fan. (More customer reviews)Fiction Plane's third outing is an excellent snapshot offering a glimpse into the mind and soul of a struggling rock band in an unforgiving musical environment. The album is a jolting departure from the tortured serenity of Bitter Forces And Lame Race Horses, but not quite as hungry or vivacious as their debut Everything Will Never Be Okay. Unlike the majority of today's complacent rock artists, Fiction Plane is actively evolving, rather than resting comfortably in a self-imposed niche. Dropping down to a three-piece, the sobering atmosphere offered by former member Dan Brown is sparingly employed in the few songs written prior to his departure ("It's A Lie", "Drink", "Presuppose" and "Fake Light From The Sun"). This leaves ample room for the remaining troopers to tighten their sound, experiment with new sonic devices and create an album that reflects the members both as individuals and as a fierce artistic unit.
The album begins with an energetic rock track, "Anyone", that challenges the notion of traditional song structure; in that it doesn't end as much as it invites the listener in and almost too quickly ends without resolution. Joe Sumner's bass behavior taunts the listener by foreshadowing the song's chorus during the verse parts and follows the vocals during the actual chorus. Denying stereotypical closure allows the cynical anthem "Death Machine" to appropriately express itself; sneak up and slap you square in the face. Immediately, you get a sense that the band has musically progressed. Throughout the album, Seton Daunt's guitar versatility provides a wealth of sonic experiences. He ranges from extraterrestrial reverberations and guitar manipulations that wouldn't be out of place on a Yes, Porcupine Tree, Led Zeppelin or Dream Theater album to Edge-like rock guitar god prowess; all the while providing an energetic backdrop complementing Sumner's angst-laden croon-wails and Pete Wilhoit's dexterous, jazz-like percussive syncopation affectation.
It's true; it is decidedly difficult to nail down any one band with which to compare Fiction Plane as a point of reference. At times, they portray the heartrending ability of U2, and at others, they provoke the conventions of the archetypal alternative rock act. And in some instances, including the rousing "Death Machine" and near-belligerent "Presuppose", the band summons a bit of the pogo-instilling voracity of Red Hot Chili Peppers or Jane's Addiction. But it is through the somber `Everyman' outlook radiating from tracks like "Drink" and "Fake Light From The Sun" that I feel the true Fiction Plane emerges. These two songs, while ballad-like and slow-tempo, echo the sentiments of fear, isolation, rejection and guilt within us all. This is the charm of Fiction Plane; rather than being vapidly inconsistent, they continuously challenge the listener in a kaleidoscope of sound, not wholly unlike one of their longtime influences, Mr. Bungle. Ultimately, Left Side of the Brain is an album not to be taken at face value, for it is more than a collection of songs from yet-another-alt-rock-band. It is not 100% deadpan seriousness, nor is it completely tongue-in-cheek frivolity. It is an aural landscape riddled with multi-hued musical designs tempered by a lyrical illustration grounded in anxiety and possibility.

Over a decade since their last tour, Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch and Brian Bennett reunited as the Shadows for The Final Tour, which kicked off in spring 2004. A sell-out everywhere, the band played to over 90,000 people in the UK. This concert was recorded at Cardiff's International Arena on June 5. (More customer reviews)WOW ! Shadows' fans everywhere, rejoice ! Here is the fabulous DVD of their final tour that not only meets, but exceeds all expectations. This is a special treat for us fans in Canada and the USA, where in the US at least, this great group has never been on the radar screen.
Before you read on--a confession. Ever since I heard their first hit "Apache" in 1960, I have been a diehard fan--so this review is very, very biased ! I considered them then--as I do now--to be the greatest pop/rock instrumental band in the world.
The Shads--as their legions of fans call them--had not played together in several years. Fortunately, due to constant fan support all over the globe, they decided to get back together for this final tour. They became stars, first as Cliff Richard's back-up group, then in their own right, about 45 years ago, when they were scarcely more than teenagers--do the math--they aren't kids anymore. However, like a fine wine, the Shads have actually improved with age--they never sounded better or played better than in this marvellous concert, recorded in Cardiff, Wales, earlier this year.
Of course, the Shads are--Hank Marvin, lead guitar--Bruce Welch, rhythm guitar--Brian Bennett, drums. They are accompanied on this tour by two other fine musicians--Mark Griffiths, bass and Cliff Hall, keyboards. You really get your "moneys worth" with this concert--it clocks in at around three hours and includes 39 numbers from their long career.
There is a lot of variety here--exciting, fast-paced tunes like The Savage", "Geronimo", "Shazam", "Shadoogie", "Gonzales" and "FBI"--lovely melodic numbers like "Atlantis", "Theme for Young Lovers","Theme from the Deer Hunter" and the timeless "Wonderful Land". Hank and Bruce have always been good vocalists too, and two of their big vocal hits are included, " Don't Make My Baby Blue" and "Let Me Be the One". They also pay tribute to their old "boss", Sir Cliff, with several of his hits which the Shads wrote--"The Day I Met Marie", "Gee Whiz It's You", "Summer Holiday" and "Bachelor Boy".
I was also impressed with their overall performance--they really seemed to be having as much fun as the audience. Brian Bennett gets several chances to show that he can play drums with the best of them--his showcase "Little B" is a clinic for aspiring drummers everywhere. Bruce Welch shows us, as he has for years, that there is more to rhythm guitar than just strumming--he's no slouch as a "picker" either--listen to his duet with Hank on the jazzy "Nivram". As for Hank Marvin--beautiful lead guitar work--the man who gives the Shads their unique sound--the man who "launched a thousand guitar players" ( probably more ! )--my favourite guitarist, sounding better than ever.
I found the technical quality of the DVD to be excellent--the picture sharp and clear--for sound, all important for this group, I picked the DTS option--really outstanding. I felt like I had a front row seat !
The DVD also includes a very relaxed and informative interview with Hank and Bruce, remembering their childhood in Newcastle
(no wonder Mark Knopfler is a fan !), and then moving to London to find fame and fortune. Brian joins them about half way through the interview, and recalls how he joined the group. There are also scenes of their post-tour party in London, with people like Brian May, Queen's great guitarist, paying tribute to the Shads, and Hank in particular. Also at the party--Sir Cliff himself, sounding quite wistful that he may never get a chance to perform with his old mates again. C'mon, Cliff--they said "last tour" not last concert--if anyone can talk them into something really special, say for a worthy charity, gee whiz it's you !
I know that five stars is the "max" under this system, but--as I'm sure you can tell--this disc is worth a lot more to me than that--much more. For Shads fans, this DVD is a wonderful testament to the music and talent of Hank, Bruce and Brian. For people who were never exposed to "Shadowmania", why not see what you have been missing ? ! My highest recommendation.
A footnote dated 13 July 2010--Shadows' fans should be aware that this marvellous concert has now been released on a Blu-ray disc. Since the original DVD, reviewed above, was pretty special to begin with, I wondered what I could expect from the Blu-ray disc. It is--in a word--spectacular. Of course, the visual quality is enhanced, but the sound is tremendous. Close your eyes and you'll think that Hank is playing in your living room ! Of course, you might need a large living room ! Anyway, you get the drift. In addition to all the great numbers mentioned in my review, there is another that I would like to mention--the beautiful "Mountains of the Moon" which opens the second half of the concert--quite mesmerizing. So, if you dig the Shads and have invested in a Blu-ray player, " Let me be the one" to say that you are in for quite a treat !
