(More customer reviews)Let me say this right off the bat: I'm a Toby Keith fan. If I say that up front, you'll know I have no agenda (like several others) when I review this album.
It's not his best work.
It has its moments. The first single, "High Maintenence Woman" is a strong track, and there are a few others. "Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya" is a nice addition to his catalog, and I'm sure it will be a single. "I Know She Hung the Moon" is a great ballad that describes not only loving a woman, but being proud of her. I also like "Love Me If You Can" from a lyrical standpoint because it does such a good job of responding to Keith's left-wing critics who actually know very little about him (and it shows). It's a bit bland from a musical perspective, however.
Now that I've pointed out the strong points, on to the CD's weaker moments: I feel that a lot of the other tracks are generic and predictable, and well....a little uninspired. "Get My Drink On" and "Hit It" are your typical kind of barroom whoop-it-ups, and Keith gives us his version of rockabilly for the title track, "Big Dog Daddy." As Keith himself admits, the song was inspired by a promotional event for the new Ford pickup truck. That puts me off a little, especially when the CD booklet contains an obvious paid picture advertisement of Keith with the truck itself. Even without that bit of commercialism, the song is nothing to write home about. Other songs like "White Rose" sound like flat-out filler.
Overall, this CD leaves me a little disappointed. I liked White Trash with Money and Honky Tonk U much better. Maybe the problem is with me and my high expectations. The fact that Keith's previous work led me there is high praise for his talent. I'll give this a few more listens, but I'll probably play his old CDs more often. He probably should have waited until he had some stronger material before he entered the studio this time around.

Freedom Review

(More customer reviews)After spending most of the 80's changing musical styles from album to album, Neil Young closed out the decade with his best album in ten years and a truly inspired released. Just as he did on Rust Never Sleeps, Freedom opens and closes with acoustic and electric versions of the same song. That song is "Rockin' In The Free World", which is one of the most powerful and thought-provoking songs of his career. In the acoustic version, the song takes on a stark and harrowing feeling that conveys a pleading tone. In its electric version, the song becomes a full frontal assault in which Mr. Young spews out the lyrics in a venomous tone. "Crime In The City" is a lengthy tale that contains some vivid writing. "Eldorado" is a powerful song that has some fine backup vocal from old friend Linda Ronstadt. "Wrecking Ball" is a fiery number and his cover of "On Broadway" is drenched in fuzz toned guitars. Freedom is a ringing declaration, a call to arms and a classic.

(More customer reviews)I could never figure out which was the best of the Marley albums, so eventually I bought all the Island era albums and a few more too... then I bought this one. Now I know which is the best--it's this one!
I love both of the other live albums, Live and Babylon By Bus. They are both great, with fine song selections, and raucous, thumping performances of favorite concert numbers. But they are stadium rock, I mean reggae, and the clapping, singing crowds are out there in the distance. With this one it feels like a club atmosphere. It may have been more that a quarter century ago, but this CD set takes you RIGHT THERE. You are right in the audience, but close to the stage. The sound quality is awesome, the performances are glowing, and the finale on the second CD makes you wish it would go on for ever.
I assume that if you are reading this that you are broadly familiar with Mr. Marley's songs, so I won't even attempt to describe them, All I will say is that if you like this line up of songs, you are going to love this album.
I would buy this even before Legend. In fact I did, come to think of it.
Here is the key to my star ratings.
* A really worthless CD...
** A CD that has some good stuff, but some major defects...
***An OK CD that will please fans of the artist in question...
****An excellent CD that represents the best work of the artist in question and can be bought with confidence...
*****An absolute classic that is the best, or among the best, of its genre. Your collection should start here.

Comeback Kid Tour Review

(More customer reviews)Just when you thought there wasn't enough new material on Bill and Hillary to go around, Paul Shanklin comes out with the CD Comeback Kid Tour. Shanklin's unique talent is what makes this a great work for years to come.
Shanklin's obvious political disdain for the current administration is what enable his truth through a great mix of parodies and songs to come shining through. Shanklin delivers a message that should put the white house on notice.
26 Tracks including the hilarious WEREWOLVES IN CONGRESS and POLL MAN, will have you thinking twice about just what and who is running the country. You find yourself asking for more.
The voices of Bill, Hillary, Algore, Teddy, Calypso Louie and others are superbly done. A must have for those tired of the shenanigans of this current administration. A real eye opener - a real pleasure!
