Elton John: The Night Time Concert: Night & Day Review

Elton John: The Night Time Concert: Night and Day

This video is more footage taped from the same concert at Wembley Stadium as the "Breaking Hearts Tour" video. Elton is ably backed by his original bandmates, Nigel Ollson on drums, the late Dee Murray on bass guitar and Davey Johnstone on lead guitar. "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" is a moving ballad that Elton, sweating profusely, invests with a lot of emotion. The next medley begins with the ballad "Blue Eyes" but segues into the rocking "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues," a combination that works very well. Elton seems relieved to get the obligatory performance of "Your Song" out of the way. He gets the crowd rocking with his scorching version of "Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting." He slows things down for "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," his voice dropping to a lower range for the high parts. "Too Low For Zero," the title cut of one of his better albums, finds Nigel, Dee and Davey singing the chorus. The sizzling "Kiss The Bride" once again brings the crowd to its feet. How appropriate that it's followed by "I'm Still Standing," one of Elton's best songs and a crowd favorite. "Crocodile Rock" is playfully performed, with the crowd happily singing along. The closing medley alone is worth the price of the video. Elton and his backing band pull out all the stops on "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Twist And Shout," whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Lasting less than one hour, the concert is over. Hopefully, whatever company that has the rights to both the "Breaking Hearts Tour" video and this video will combine them into a single DVD release someday.

Jesse McCartney: Up Close (2005) Review

Jesse McCartney: Up Close (2005)

I am a HUGE Jesse fan and i was excited to see a DVD out of him. I went to the store and flipped to the back of the DVD to see what was on it. I saw 5 different sections: Music Videos (5), Live Studio Performances (6), Behind the Scenes (boring), In Depth Interviews (Taiwan one was funny), and Bonus Music (1). So that won me over. I pop it into my DVD and I am shocked, 3 of the videos are NOT full length! These include: "Because You Live", "Good Life" and "She's No You - Special Performance Video". I never saw the full length of any of these (even though clips of "Good Life" and "She's No You" was show on the Show Summerland). The clips of "Because You Live" is excellent and would easily have bacame my favorite video if the whole thing was shown (the whole video was close ups of Jesse from the shoulder up - yum), now my second grief.
The "Bonus Music" section is terrible. They play the remix to "She's No You" to a SLIDESHOW of the "She's No You" video and some of the pictures are not that great, like at a girl in the coffee shop or a blurry picture of the bike part.
The "Behind The Scenes" part was kind of boring. Also, the audio on the part about "Beautiful Soul" is pretty bad. I wish they would have closed captioned it. The part on "Get Your Shine On" was okay- I just wish they could have put the whole video in the "Music Video" section. The only good part was the part about the video "She's No You". Did you know they had to cancel their first day of shooting because of snow? Well, you can find this out and more on this section of the DVD.
"In Depth Interviews". I don't remember all of them, but one stands out in my head; Taiwan interview. At this point while I was watching this (I'm 18) my parents started watching with me-and they were laughing out loud. It was so funny Jesse seemed a little out of place in the interview and every once in a while, the interviewer would break out into translating what he said in English to an Asian language. It is very unexpected, which is why it's pretty funny. You have to get the DVD just to see that part.
"Live Studio Performances" was one of the best parts of the DVD. I have 2 things to note about this section: one there are two "Sessions@Aol" performances (Beautiful Soul and She's No You), which you can get for FREE on aolmusic.com and they seemed the weakest of Jesse's vocals. The second thing is there is one called "Blackbird-Stripped Raw and Real". I never heard this song before and it seemed a little short. I don't know if that's how long the song really is or if I got jipped again like in the "Music Video" sections.
In conclusion, this is nowhere near a perfect DVD. Even the best Jesse fan (unless age 10 and under) will not be 100% satisfied after watching the complete DVD (around an hour long). I hope the makers of this DVD will try to fix some of my above complaints for any future music DVD trys.

Destiny's Child: Live in Atlanta (2007) Review

Destiny's Child: Live in Atlanta (2007)

After watching it 5 times now in 4 days, I can honestly say that Beyonce has emerged not on ly as a star of her time, but as a star of all times. I would put her right up there with Aretha, Patty, and Tina Marie. Her contemporaries, Badu, Ciera, Keys, I am afraid, become Pippen-to-Jordan like in their shortcomings. The girl -- correct that -- fully grown and fine woman is a Diva. This DVD confirms it.
I know, I know, everyone wants to reserve judgement, and judge a body of work before proclaiming a neophyte a Diva. Tune into Dangerously in love on this DVD, and then tell me she is not ready for the baton. Tina, and Aretha in their prime could have matched the rendition, maybe, and Patty may be able to pull it off today. But, they never could have pulled it off looking as good as Beyonce. And don't tell me looks don't matter...this is entertainment, and her looks are supremely entertaining.
Oh yeah, the other two. Kelly, and Michelle were good. Singing gospel, Michelle, was clearly in her element. She will not make a dime as a table dancer though, poor guy, gets pulled up on stage to sit next to the guy getting "catered" by Beyonce...so close, but yet so far. If Kelly asks the audience to help her one more time during her solo, I am going to peremenently edit her out of my DVD. Michelle should get more mic time, but since Kelly is an original DC I guess loyalty wins out...not on my remote though...can we say fast forward.
As far as singers/entertainers, unless Stevie reterns to form some time soon, or the spirit of Hathaway, Gaye, Ripperton, Redding, or Lady Day enhabits another human in the near future, Beyonce is it. High praise I know, but who else is dancing through an entire show, and singing (on key)? I submit her performance in Bootylicious to cap off my thesis.
I welcome solid debate, but come correct. I will.

I am a huge Norway fan, and looked forward to this disc arriving. I was disappointed. While Oslo and Bergen, Grieg's living room and Trolls are all lovely, what makes Norway unchallenged is the glory of the fjords, glaciers, and mountains, and there is a strong under-emphasis of these natural wonders. Yes, there are wildflowers and meadows and close-ups of water flowing over rapids, all to lovely music, but the only fjord seen is one small corner of Sogne for a few moments. As one that tries to recall the glorious scenes of Naeroy, Geiranger, Nord, and Hardanger fjords, and countless more, I felt that the visual selections here were seriously lacking.

Elvis Costello and the Imposters: Club Date - Live in Memphis (2006)

I was actually in Memphis the night this concert was taped and was lucky enough to be in the audience for the first show. He actually played two shows that night. The room was warm. The beer was cold. The crowd, tightly packed into a small space, was lively. But enough about atmosphere, you want to hear about the concert.
You know how it is when you go to a concert of a well known artist and all you really want to hear is the old stuff, mainly because the new stuff is pretentious and lame...that was NOT the case here. Elvis varied it. He played both. But honestly, the best part of the show was when he played the new stuff. The duets with Emmylou Harris were also outstanding. And it might just be a personal preference, but I really dug the purple suit he was wearing.
Check it out for yourself. And look for me while you are at it, I may have been imortalized on the DVD. I am the curly haired girl in the red and white shirt.

Great concert, but only because I can see it on YouTube.
I bought this "Region Free" (Region 0) Blu-Ray only to find out that it will not play on a PS3. Others have found the same problem. I tried it in a friend's Blu-Ray player, too, but it was a Sony; so, guess what--it didn't work in it either. Apparently the PS3 does NOT do everything...

Elton John: The Red Piano (Blu-Ray + 2-CD) Review

Elton John: The Red Piano (Blu-Ray + 2-CD)
Average Reviews:

The Bitch is Back, indeed! One of the finest songwriters of the 20th century is well showcased on this DVD. The Red Piano's set list features some of Sir Elton John's best-known crowd pleasers and he delivers each performance with gusto. One can't help but get enraptured by his enthusiasm, and I found myself tapping my toes to a few tunes that I wouldn't even count among my favorites, ie: Benny and the Jets. There's something about seeing the songss performed live that makes them that much more engaging. Vocally, Elton is in excellent form, and though he modifies a few melodies (he doesn't hit the high notes like he used to - he leaves that to his back-up vocalists), his voice sounds rich and full.
Technically, the set design and overall visual production are remarkable and complement the music well. The sound seems especially crisp for a live performance recording. My only complaint is that the aspect ratio is the soon-to-be-defunct 1.33:1, which doesn't translate well to a wide-screen TV. Overall, I found this concert to be more enjoyable than his "One Night Only" DVD.
If you haven't had a chance to see Sir Elton perform in person, this may be the next best thing. (In fact, you get better close-ups here than you'd ever get in a theater or arena.) The concert DVD comes highly recommended to Elton John fans seeking an engaging concert that spotlights some of his greatest hits and showcases his performing personality.

This is a really good concert! These guys are really funny. A couple of things that make me crazy is the fact that the picture doesn't seem to be that great for blu-ray, and the audio is not even in digital. The audio and picture are still pretty good but not for blu-ray. This would have passed more for a good regular dvd concert. Still really good concert, and it is worth buying.

If you are a fan of Iron Maiden, this is the biggest no-brainer in the history of mankind. Watching this concert in 1080P projected on a 133" screen is awe inspiring. The DTS-HD MA audio mix is appropriately aggressive and captures the band's sound perfectly. It definitely helps that the band is obviously having fun with the enthusiastic crowds, and are in fine form, especially vocalist Dickinson, who sounds effortless hitting all of his signature high notes throughout the set. I may be crazy, but he appears to have even better control of his voice now than on earlier concert films like the classic "Live After Death" when he was barely 26 years old (and theoretically in his prime!). Impressive indeed.
Drummer Nicko McBrain literally puts on a drum clinic on several songs, and the set provides some great angles of his playing, especially a particularly well edited segment of "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" which had my jaw on the floor. The guitar playing is also pretty great throughout, and surprisingly very tight considering there are 3 guitarists in the line-up. It's hard to pick "highlights" because the whole set is basically guitar riff heaven!
As others have stated, this is a great concert to introduce people to Iron Maiden. Oh, and there is also a pretty good documentary on the disk as well... ;)
The actual documentary is pretty light on content, and emphasizes fun moments more than shedding any real light on the inner workings of the band. I was ok with that, even as a pretty huge fan of Maiden since the 80's, but I can certainly understand where someone that wants to know what color underwear Steve Harris wears would be disappointed here. Ah well, you can't please everybody! And apparently there is a mountain of footage not used, so I'm sure we'll eventually see it released in a retrospective of some sort when the band gets to that point in their careers (10 years from now would be my guess).
But for now, I can't recommend this disk highly enough. Do not hesitate- even if you are only a casual fan- buy this NOW, especially if you have a good sound system and a 1080P display.

FLIGHT 666 documents the first leg of Maiden's legendary SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME WORLD TOUR which took them 50,000 miles round the planet playing 23 concerts on five continents in just 45 days. One of the stars of the movie is the band's customized Boeing 757, Ed Force One, which carried the band, all their crew and 12 tons of stage equipment and was piloted by Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, a fully qualified and active Airline Captain with Astraeus Airlines. Taking you on a visual global tour from Mumbai to Sydney, Tokyo to L.A., Mexico City to Costa Rica, Bogota to Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago to New York and Toronto and places in-between, you travel with the band and crew on the plane, to and from shows, in the bar and during leisure time, while experiencing the exhaustion and fan pandemonium that comes with such a mission.

I purchased the Stevie Wonder - Live At Last yesterday and I have to say that finally Motown stepped up and put together a great DVD featuring one of the great pioneers of our musical time. Simply one of the best from beginning to end. My all time favorite song is also featured on this DVD "Visions", I went to see Stevie in concert this last year in Philadelphia, and I would have to say that the picture quality and the surround 5.1 DTS sound made me feel like I was at the concert all over again at a reasonable price. I was also amazed at how wonderful Stevie's daughter sounds on her solo. All in all....this is definately a classic DVD with all of his favorite songs, from "I Wish", "All I Do", " "As", "Don't You Worry About A Thing", "Superstition", "Overjoyed" to the all time classic "Lately". Truly a must have for any music lover and keep in mind that after almost 6 decades....Stevie Wonder is still selling out arena not only in this country....but around the world. If you've never been to a Stevie Concert.....sit back, relax and enjoy this 2 hour DVD concert....you may never get a chance to enjoy great music like this again, so don't take it forgranted. Just simply enjoy and again....thanks Stevie and Motown.....You both finally got it right!!!!!

This certainly is an accurate capturing of Amy Winehouse in concert. She's a bit tipsy, her between songs banter with the crowd is all at once funny, charming and rambling. She seems to lose her train of thought a time or two, but when she sings, there is no denying the magic and power of her voice. Her wonderful backing band does a stellar job throughout and the home turf of London makes for a very appreciative and supportive crowd.
I thouroughly enjoyed the hour long documentary "I Told You I Was Trouble." Some great behind the scenes footage of her younger days, never before seen performances--even a very early showcase inside her record company's offices. If you are a fan of Miss Amy, you will greatly enjoy this DVD. Well worth the price!

I travelled from Massachusetts to Miami to see this show, along with a friend and my brother who lived in Florida at the time and I did not regret it. Roberto Carlos is still at the top of his game. Vocally, he is still in great form. There is really not much else I can say except that he has accomplished it all during his amazing career. What a singer! I have both the standard DVD and the Blue Ray format of this concert and while the Blue Ray has a better picture, the standard DVD has a better sound. I would encourage anyone to invest in this product as I believe you will not be disappointed. The show was spectacular.

Two unforgettable nights, one incredible artist: Roberto Carlos took to the stage on Thursday May 24 and Friday May 25, 2007, and wowed audiences with his greatest hits sung in Spanish. For fans of this legendary Brazilian artist, it was a much-awaited return. Roberto Carlos had not performed in the U.S. for a decade. Returning to perform at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami (formerly: Carnival Center for The Performing Arts). Roberto Carlos performed two shows produced by Day 1 Entertainment; the incomparably talented singer and songwriter, backed up by his band E Coral, once again demonstrated why he has sold over 100 million records worldwide. On the second night of "Roberto Carlos en Concierto," the performance was recorded for what will become Roberto Carlos' first Blu-ray release ever in Spanish! Delighting the audience at the sold-out theater with classics such as "Emociones", "Desahogo", "El Día Que Me Quieras" and "Amigo", among others. At the end of the concert, and after a standing ovation, Roberto Carlos came back and performed to three encores as a gesture of gratitude to his loyal fans and audience. Portuguese-speaking fans and lovers of Roberto Carlos' songs in his native language were also acknowledged with the song "Acrostico". Mojo (Blu-ray Audio w/ Bonus Download) Review

Mojo (Blu-ray Audio w/ Bonus Download)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Heartbreakers have evolved distinctly throughout their 30+ years of recording together. Listening to their catalog from the beginning to the present, one travels from an era of short, punchy garage-rock tunes in the 1970s, to the laid-back pop hits of the Jeff Lynne era, to their current period of meditative rock planted firmly in the band's primordial roots.
It's a natural progression, what with Petty's lament of modern music with the Last DJ in 2002, his efforts to keep '60s and '70s-era classic rock alive through his Buried Treasure radio show, the success of last year's Live Anthology, and a rapidly decentralizing music industry that's no longer ruled by the gatekeepers of Top 40 radio. It almost seems that Mojo just... had to be.
If Mudcrutch was Petty's country album, Mojo is his foray into blues recording (sprinkled with a little psychedelia and reggae to taste). Like Mudcrutch, Mojo is freewheeling, high-energy, and upbeat, and prone to a little jam session here and there -- which would have been unthinkable in the days of the neatly-trimmed Full Moon Fever or Into the Great Wide Open. Without a single bad song in the mix, Mojo is a cohesive album you can listen to from beginning to end.
Personally, I am digging latter-day Tom Petty. The band is as good as they've ever been, and each member seems to have increasing freedom to showcase their immense instrumental talents and unrivaled ability to complement one another. Mike Campbell's guitar is on fire through the whole album, and Scott Thurston breaks out of his shell with fine blues harmonica on several tracks.
As a departure from the past musical stylings that made the band successful, Mojo will certainly raise some eyebrows and not be to everyone's liking. Frankly, I think that's a good thing. These guys aren't trained monkeys paid to crank out the same songs over and over again. They're world-class musicians, and they deserve the chance to breathe a little. Play on, boys.

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty And the Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70's. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc 'The Live Anthology,' which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it was when they gave all their home movies, outtakes and live footage to director Peter Bogdanovich to create the Grammy-winning four-hour career documentary 'Runnin Down A Dream.' There have been side projects and experiments since the band last went into the studio to cut a new Tom Petty And the Heartbreakers album. With 'MOJO,' they have taken their recent freedom and experimentation to heart. They have gone off the reservation and all signs indicate they aren't coming back. The first thing that hits you about 'MOJO' is that the spirit of the Mudcrutch sessions has carried on with the Heartbreakers. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room not a studio - facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time.Tom Petty says, 'With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. 'MOJO' is where the band lives when it's playing for itself.'As for the songs, 'MOJO' showcases a wide variety of American music from rock 'n' roll to country and both electric and acoustic blues. And then there are the images in Petty's lyrics which slip in on the melodies and set up a home in your head: The barefoot girl in the high grass chewing on a stick of sugar cane, the run-in with the law that begins when a carload of buddies decide to party with the motel maids, and the hilariously audacious idea of opening an album with an electric blues rocker about Thomas Jefferson's love affair with Sally Hemings. Petty would probably chuck a rock at anyone who called him a poet, but he sure is a southern writer of humor and sensitivity.'MOJO' has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out reggae number that is unlike anything that the Heartbreakers have done before. It's the kind of album nobody's supposed to be able to make anymore. It got here just in time.PRODUCER'S NOTE:ABOUT THIS HIGH RESOLUTION BLU-RAY AUDIO DISCThis disc contains all 15 tracks from 'Mojo' in high-resolution 48K 24 bit PCM stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. DTS-HD master audio is spacious with tight, deep bass and plenty of air between the instruments. Gigantic sound stage, especially when string section joins in. Vocal recording is dry with incredible nuance. You could literally hear her whisper above the full band & orchestra. Demo disc quality. Video is a little soft compared to, say, a nature documentary, but is basically crystal clear. Performance features stunning vocals & a very talented band. You probably either hate or love KD Lang but even home theater enthusiasts who are not into her music should consider owning this disc. This is a new standard for blu-ray concerts.

Thought fans like myself of Manson would like to know that this is NOT just a bluray reissue of the GG&G DVD from a few years back. Remember how that DVD was annoying as it was a weird cut together of several different shows? Well, this isnt, and it is SO MUCH BETTER. One night, one performance, as it should have been in the first place. If you are a fan of Manson before it started going wrong from GROTESQUE onwards, then this bluray is for you. Great HD quality (1080i though not 1080p) and sound all good as well. We can only hope Manson fins passion again one day as he did on the albums up until this point on this release. Saw his last 2 x tours - he looks bored and going through the motions now onstage, unlike his performance on this GREAT live set. Get it.

The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights (2010) Review

The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights (2010)

(More customer reviews)
This video is an adventure. It's the second White Stripes live DVD, following the concert-only Under Blackpool Lights. This DVD, however, is more of a documentary with live shows thrown in, rather than a concert DVD.
For those unfamiliar with the Stripes, they are a Detroit-based duo of Jack and Meg White (whom Jack presents as brother/sister though they were actually married AND divorced before their second album was released). Jack loves novelties and is obsessed with the number 3, and the band's motif of red, white, and black. If you are a fan of most types of rock, you will love them (or at least some of their assorted songs, there's at least one for everyone). I watched this with my parents (my mom loves Elvis and my dad is a Zeppelin fan), and immediately afterward they wanted me to add the White Stripes to their computers/iPods.
The movie follows the band as they tour each Canadian province and play shows, not only in concert halls, but in parks, on boats, on buses, in schools, and with native Canadians. It gives you a look into the day-to-day of Jack and Meg, and what their ambitions for the band and themselves are as far as the tour goes; Jack also gives great insight into what direction he follows and what creative process he uses for the band. Meg even talks, and they talk about why she never talks, to some laughs for those of us who know Meg as a shy, rarely-interviewed introvert. Interspersed as well are the novelty concerts that are paired with each major show, which show really not the novelty of each show but of Jack and Meg themselves, two oddballs with an idea that a band can be creative within the confines of an idea and a motif, and to explore this motif to its limit.
Now, on to the concerts themselves: blown away. Jack's live shows are heartfelt performances, and he plays to each different audience as if it were a group of his closest friends, knowing exactly what songs to play, including the fa- favorite B-Side cover version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," which always seems so passionate (even though it's told from the point of view of a woman). Each song is a concert-ready version of its album counterpart, generally not played the same way ("Fell In Love With A Girl" uses chords strummed individually with little distortion, as opposed to the ever-popular studio version), and you can see that they work to make each show special. They play without a set list, and so it's more of a jam session of your favorite White Stripes songs. When Jack plays the B-Side Black Jack Davey in a park with Meg on the tambourine, giving very little or no notice that they were playing there, it conjures images of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. It's those small town where maybe they've never even heard anything the Stripes have done, only in name do they know them, maybe a rumor of their tour of Canada, but you can tell the people know something special is happening, and in each town a crowd gathers that is very substantial for how small the town itself is.
By the end of the tour, you can see why they canceled their U.S. tour: they seem very weary and stressed out. And when the video ends with Meg crying as Jack plays piano and sings "White Moon", you can tell they've been stretched thin, but it seems like they loved the journey, and you will, too.

92 minute documentary film containing footage from the 2007 Canadian tour shot and directed by Emmett Malloy. In the summer of 2007, shortly after the release of their 6th album 'Icky Thump', The White Stripes headed north of their hometown of Detroit to embark on an ambitious journey across Canada. The plan was to play a show in every province and territory in Canada, from B.C. to Newfoundland to Nunavut. 'Having never done a tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog... from the ocean to the permafrost' says Jack White. 'We wanted to play out of the way towns that don't usually get shows... the shows are better, it's better for the people, it's a better experience, it's way more unique, something interesting is going to happen... hopefully.'White called upon filmmaker Emmett Malloy to come and document this trek for the band. Malloy had directed videos forthe band in the past, and seemed eager to hit the road with them. Equipped with a couple of 16mm cameras, and a few other documenting devices, the band and crew all headed north. The end result was 'Under Great White Northern Lights'. 'Under Great White Northern Lights' is a visual and emotional feature length film documenting The White Stripes making their way through Canada and culminating with their 10th anniversary show in Nova Scotia. The film documents the band playing shows all over Canada; from local bowling alleys, to city buses, and onward to the legendary Savoy Theater for the10th Anniversary show. A show that turned out to be the longest show the band had ever done on stage together. The film captures intimate moments of Jack and Meg both on and off stage as they travel through some of the mostremote parts of the northern Yukon Territory. Along the way, they have some nice casual conversations about their ten years together, fire cannons, play some of their biggest songs together on stage, and even play a 'one note show.' The cameras were there to capture every waking moment. What 'Northern Lights' does best, is document one of the biggest bands in the world, playing to local crowds in small towns. Some of these towns were so small that many of the locals had no idea who The White Stripes were - they just knew something big was going on in their town. This forced a band that had been together for a decade to go back to a place reminiscent of the first shows they ever played together. For the first time in a long time, no one knew who they were and they had to make a first impression with their music. The live footage captured in this film shows that Jack and Meg were clearly ready for this.Beyond the live footage, some of the films most memorable moments happen off-stage - offering an insightful look into the very private and complex world that is The White Stripes. It was shortly after this tour that The White Stripes canceledtheir fall tour of the United States - making the ten year anniversary a truly pivotal milestone for this legendary band.Blu-Ray track-listing:1. Chris Botti: Live (With Orchestra and Special Guests) (2007) Review

Chris Botti: Live (With Orchestra and Special Guests) (2007)
Average Reviews:

After this magic night in L.A. with an all-star cast of guest vocalists, Chris Botti took the show on the road -- minus the great singers -- and on five consecutive nights stopped in as many Canadian cities, including this one. The all-instrumental show was, to my memory, even better (than this original show) because of the extended solos by Chris himself and his brilliant, accompanying musicians.
Botti told his Winnipeg audience that, when he toured with Sting, he was urged to "find yourself the best drummer in the world - and make him the heart of your band."
"So I Googled," he said, "for 'The baddest- *ss drummer in the world,' and up came the name Billy Kilson." Then Botti told us: "What you are about to see, you will not believe." He wasn't exaggerating. The drum solo (I forget the tune -- doesn't matter) was beyond any musical experience I've witnessed since Oscar Peterson last performed here 20 years ago.
I turned to the person next to me and said, "This is like watching a god." At one point Billy Kilson was performing with just one hand, multiple rhythms, with alternating shadings so subtle it sounded like he was using brushes, not sticks.
The entire band stood out in the front lobby of our "Burton Cummings Theatre" and signed autographs until every last patron had gone out into that good night. I wanted to talk to other members of this all star band, comprised of Grammy-winners, including pianist Billy Childs and guitarist Mark Whitfield. Instead, I went straight for Bill Kilson.
"Who are your heroes?" Billy thought about it a minute, (he has a modest, gentle demeanor) and said, "My teacher" (a lesser-known jazz drummer - but an influential artist whose name I can't recall six months later). When he'd mentioned just that one name, I asked: "Anyone else?"
"Max Roach," he said.
The solo Kilson performs on this DVD is impressive enough; but after seeing him 'in person' on a more extended solo, I would urge jazz fans to find a way to see Billy Kilson "live and in person," -- and be prepared to re-arrange your personal pantheon of greatest-ever drummers! Good to see that the Amazon.com editorial review (above) mentions his name and the word "remarkable" in the same sentence!
The "bonus track" on this DVD concert, also happened to be Chris Botti's lone 'encore' here in Winnipeg -- a gorgeous rendition of the Arlen/Mercer classic written for Frank Sinatra. The trumpeter told us: "I worked with Sinatra for two weeks at the start of my career -- when I was fresh out of college!" It was, he said, "the greatest musical experience of my life"
For the Winnipeg audience that gave him a standing ovation, his performance of "One for My Baby" -- ALONE -- was worth the price of admission!
