(More customer reviews)Just for truth's sake, on disc 1, Elvis was not singing to taped music (or karaoke as it was condescendingly referred to), it was done live - I've SEEN THE OUTTAKES. You can see the band, and you can see if he makes a mistake the band stops. The only part that the vocals were dubbed were the story sequences, for obvious resons. He also jams with the band for a while during the stand up part playing lead electric blues guitar. You'd be surprised how good he really was on the guitar, no hendrix, but definately a Neil Young. I heard Elvis do guitar solos, oh yeah, the boy can play. And also, he has SO MUCH ENERGY on disc 1 it's mind-blowing. The sound quality is crisp, the bass is pumping, and Elvis vocals portray him as the grass-roots blues singer he is. Another thing is, you get a good glimpse of Elvis' sense of humor in this 2-disc set, which is good for seeing his humanity. That today a singer who gets involved with drugs is pitied and coddled, and Elvis gets called childish names is beyond me, but that's how comfortable it is to agree with a stereotype. Well, no stereotype here, you will hear why Elvis will remain the #1 Artist of all time.

All Shook Up (2005 Original Broadway Cast) (Featuring the Songs of Elvis Presley) Review

(More customer reviews)I saw the show about a month ago, and while there was a little lack-of-plot, it was so entertaining. It almost doesn't matter that the love story gets a little tangled, because you get so hooked on the songs. For example, the most obvious stretch to include a song was "jailhouse rock"... it just starts all of a sudden... I mean, it's a great song, but you can tell that it was included just because it's such a good song, not because it has some kind of relevance. But I still loved show. If you are looking for a profound and enlightening love story... this may not be it--but I truly believe that anyone would enjoy the entertainment (the music grabs you, because it's... well... elvis). The energy and enthusiasm of the performance was outstanding and it was captured really well on this cd. It puts me in a great mood! Between Cheyenne Jackson and Jen Gambatese (and, actually, the entire cast is really strong vocally) I challenge anyone to listen to this cd without singing along, tapping your feet, or bopping your head. Songs like "C'mon Everybody" and "Burning Love" are bound to get you out of your seat. Then there are the seductive songs like, "Let Yourself Go," and "A Little Less Conversation;" the lovestruck ones: "It's now or never," "The Power of My Love," "It Hurts Me," "There's Always Me," and the ever so wonderful "Can't Help Falling In Love." I definately recommend it, especially for those elvis or/and broadway fans. I honestly feel that everyone would appreciate this cd... whether it be for elvis, broadway, or sheer enjoyment!

Blue Hawaii (1961) Review

(More customer reviews)What is a self-proclaimed intellectual doing watching (and loving) Elvis films? I make no claims about Norman Taurog as a director, nor about the credibility of the script, nor about the authenticity of the Hawaiian music. I DO claim, however, that Elvis is the The King. The songs, the music, and the singing are fantastic. Everything else is strung onto Elvis like strings of popcorn around a Christmas tree.
Not all Elvis films are this good. What makes this one better are the glossy production values; and the letterbox print definitely helps. Angela Lansbury puts in a highly amusing performance as Elvis's ditzy Southern Belle mama (after all, Hawaii is the southernmost state, no?). The whole story hinges around Elvis's return from the military and his desire to return to his cozy beach bum existence, while mater and pater want him to join the family pineapple firm.
The King, of course, is subject to no law. He goes into the tour guide business, marshalling a well-preserved teacher and her four teenage charges around the islands. His Franco-Hawaiian girlfriend is jealous that there's more than tourism going on behind closed doors.
At the end, everything comes together. Elvis gets hitched AND finds a way to work in tourism and for the pineapple firm at the same time. All is at peace in the world, and the music wells up. Finis.

Elvis - That's the Way It Is (Special Edition) (1970) Review

(More customer reviews)The "Special Edition" DVD of the 1970 concert film, "That's the way it is",is remastered with better audio, video, and extra footage of Elvis! It has removed footage from the original VHS version (which has a cover showing Elvis in a flowered shirt) such as fan comments, advertising for the show, and even a few Elvis performances ("I just can't help believing" for one). This documentary consists of footage of Elvis in one of the best times of his life emotionally, physically, and vocally. Seriously, the band has to work hard to keep up with the energy that Elvis displays in this show! (see "Polk Salad Annie", "Suspicious Minds", etc.) It is fantastic that this video has been preserved because it shows Elvis at the top of his game. You may notice that the audience is quite tame compared to an arena audience. For one thing the concert is a formal Vegas affair with everyone seated at dining tables. Yes there are still some lovesick girls in the front row, but you can also see celebrities like Sammy Davis, jr. and Cary Grant in attendance. The energy of the audience doesent really matter anyway because the performance Elvis gives is amazing and inspiring. This is a great way to remember Elvis.
The DVD will sound, look, and flow much better than the original film. It also has more Elvis and less stuff to fast foward through. Bottom line: Hold on to your old VHS copy for the performances not on the DVD, but buy the DVD for every other reason.

Elvis On Tour: The Rehearsals Review

(More customer reviews)As a long-time Elvis fan, I've found this CD to be one of my all-time favorites. Full of rehearsals recorded during the making of the "Elvis On Tour" documentary, it contains optimum versions of many of his circa-1972 songs.
Two songs make this CD a must-have:
"Young And Beautiful" - a full-length version of the 1957 classic, given an updated treatment for 1972. This is not just a line or two (unlike "El Paso," unfortunately).
"Always On My Mind" - although this performance was previously released on "The Great Performances" CD (and as an overdubbed, edited performance on the "This Is Elvis" album), the version here for "Elvis On Tour: The Rehearsals" has far better sound quality. For me, this is the best recording of the song by anyone. This version is my second-favorite Elvis song, next only to "If I Can Dream."

(More customer reviews)This Deluxe Edition DVD features pretty much everything you could ask for in regards to Elvis Aloha from Hawaii. You get the staged footage of Elvis arriving in Hawaii and greeting fans, which is actually pretty boring. You get the complete rehearsal concert that was taped two days before the live broadcast. Elvis shows more energy here than in the broadcast concert, but he forgets more of the lyrics and sings two less songs. You get the complete Aloha from Hawaii Concert, which has been re-edited from scratch. The show was originally broadcast with quite a bit of "montage" footage, which means multiple images from the concert seen on the screen all at once in video blocks, but almost all of those effects were removed from this version. After the concert, Elvis recorded five songs on stage with no audience, which were inserted into the concert after commercial breaks, played with montage footage of Hawaii. The complete footage of that recording session is here, complete with all takes of each song, with no footage of Hawaii. Finally, the original broadcast version of Elvis Aloha from Hawaii is included, minus the commercials. What more can you ask for?
