(More customer reviews)I can remember seeing them at the Bitter End on Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village so close I could touch them, and at The Westbury Music fair in the round.........
Even though they've changed the phrasing on a couple of their songs, and it's not quite the way they did it on the record, the Everly Brothers are living Rock and Roll legends that cannot be replaced by anyone, and seeing them in person, or even here on DVD, is a wonderful experience.....
Two points: first, to sing the same songs for 40 years, night after night, and often not being allowed to grow past those sacred hits can take a lot out of any musician, and singing into that same mike every night, with the same guy and the same songs can really take a toll on any relationship......of course the people in the audience only care about hearing their favorite songs the way they remember them, and are unaware, (as they should be) that they sang the same set the same way last night and every night for the past 40 years.....it gets to you
Second, in any relationship, often one dominates and the other doesn't, and when that happens over and over and you don't just work together but you're family as well, well Don still sees Phil as his baby brother, and now that both men are in their 50's.....it's easy to see why the split up happened.....(The Beatles were destined for the same thing as soon as Brian Epstein was lost...no buffer)
All that in mind, I bought this the second I saw it......the sound is OK, but not as good as you would have liked, because the band and the background music was not what they deserved......and the boys are older, as are we all, and time has a way of......
And you could see that at this point, there was still some tension between these two wonderful musicians......
For the record, the last time I saw them, years after this show, the tension was gone, they were having fun again, and you could tell that both they, and the world around them, had accepted that these weren't just the Everly Brothers, but that these were the ONLY two EVERLY BROTHERS in the universe, and they finally had, and realized they had, all the respect they deserved.

Endless Summer Review

(More customer reviews)This is the perfect title for a Beach Boys retrospective. These songs are constants of the oldies-radio format, especially during the summer. All of those sixties-sounding songs (classic, to the point of being nearly cliche) are here: "Surfin' Safari" "Catch A Wave" "Surfer Girl" "Surfin' U.S.A." "Shut Down" "Little Deuce Coupe" "California Girls" "I Get Around" and so on. If it was about Waves, Women, or Wheels and it had perfect harmony, it's probably on this album. And there are just enough songs dealing with semi-adult themes ("In My Room" "Don't Worry Baby" "Girl Don't Tell Me" "When I Grow Up To Be A Man"), that the whole package doesn't get stale. A couple of omissions are "Surfin'" (recorded before the Beach Boys signed with Capitol) and "Surf City," which Brian Wilson gave to Jan and Dean. "Barbara Ann" seems like is should have been here, and the version of "Help Me, Rhonda" that's included here is not the hit single we heard on the airwaves. But considering "Good Vibrations" was added to the CD release, all is forgiven. True-to-the-core fans of The Beach Boys and Surf music will want to go deeper ("Spirit Of America" is another great compilation for this purpose). But if you want just the cream of their output, all you really need to buy are "Pet Sounds" and this album. No matter what you're doing or where you might be, with "Endless Summer," you have the sun, the sand, and the surf (and maybe even a babe)! Who could ask for more?

(More customer reviews)Never an intense Pat Benatar fan when she hit the scene, I now stand in a certain awe of the power she and husband Neil Giraldo convey on this great evocation of years of playing together. With only a quartet--and NO ryhthm guitar!--they rip through Benatar's biggest hits and add new material that is as fresh as the 21st century. The power of the guitar playing shows Neil to be one of the most versatile musicians in rock music--ever. His command of the instrument is extraordinary in the way he bends the music to his will, and the excitement never stops from riff to riff. Benatar hangs back when Neil is on a roll, but then she smashes back into the song with pipes as limber as ever. She is one of the half dozen truly great female rock stars, as different from Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, and Janis Joplin as she is unique and trailblazing in her own work. A perfect couple, who, one assumes, have played out their career on a field of battle.

Roy Orbison - A Black & White Night (DTS) (1988) Review

(More customer reviews)When Springsteen wrote and created his Born To Run album he explained to critics that he wanted "to have an album with lyrics like Dylan, singing like Roy Orbison, and a sound like Phil Spector." If you're 25 or older and you can only give your children one snapshot of popular music, circa '60- '90, buy them a copy of this tape. Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes, k.d. lang, John David Souther, Jackson Brown and Steven Soules sing backing vocals. Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen and T-Bone Burnett, among others,play instrumental second fiddles. And they all do it for The Man. Roy Orbison. The architect of the symphonic, Ravel-like love song. The singer of singers. Just weeks before he died he played a concert in Boston and the local critic said, (I paraphrase) "he repeated that last line, in his falsetto voice, over and over and over as if to say, 'I'm still here and can do it...anytime.'" The videotape is revelatory. Stephen Burton (gtr) shows, over and over again, why he is to studio musicians and especially to guitar players, an icon non-pareil. He is Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Bucky Pizzarelli, all in one. The tape does a tidy review of Orbison's hits. More remarkable than the performance of those hits is the reverential looks and obvious excitment of Springsteen, Costello, lang, Raitt, Browne, etc. as they accompany him on his tour of transistor radio hits. Forget the Wilbury's. This is Roy's night. Deservedly. Roy knew how to constrain all that emotion behind his words until he was ready to release it. In the last moments of the tape Roy sings "Pretty Woman" and it opens up into a jam-for-all. Noteworthy is how Springsteen acquits himself in a mano a' mano guitar trade with Burton. First they trade twelve bar solos, then they raise the stakes and trade four bar exchanges. Springsteen shows that all those hours spent in his bedroom paid off, ("..well I got me a guitar and I learned how to make it talk...") not topping Burton but filing a tasty, even nasty, testament of his own licks and sources. Perhaps most easily, and unjustly, overlooked in a star studded vid like this is Elvis Costello who plays, no, contributes in a huge way, turns as a harp (harmonica) player, guitar player, singer and pianist. But instrumentally, Burton, Springsteen and Alex Tutt (long-time Orbison drummer) truly set themselves apart. And...It's a real hoot to see k.d. lang and Bonnie Raitt and Jennifer Warnes doing "steps" and singing "sha la la la" and "doo wah doo wah doo wah" and obviously loving it. It is a video to love. And that doesn't even begin to address Orbison's lyrics: "A candy colored clown they call the sandman; tiptoes to my room every night; just to sprinkle star dust and to whisper: "go to sleep, everything is alright." Dylan, Springsteen, Orbison, ..... Quick. Name three more lyricists of that stratum. Buy the tape. Re-learn what was good and true (men "do" cry") about popular music in the sixties and the seventies.

Frankie while being much YOUNGER when he recorded his classics with the Four Seasons it still incredible to see live... While true the original FOUR SEASONs have broken up decades ago..Franki has but together a top notch band and the trip down memory lane is incredible. He lays down hit after hit after hit... Not many singers have the longevity that Mr Valli has. I was at this show in Atlantic City and it was incredible and for the so called doubters and people that know absolutely about music My first concert this Franki and the 4 Seasons was at the Latin Casino in NJ and let me tell you something while he has grown older and cant quite hit those incredible high notes he and his band still ROCK and I challange any on at his age do to what he does in concert....If you are a fan of the Four Seasons and Franki Valli DO NOT MISS this. You should have this in your collection....Let the others take teir Ball and GO HOME!! Franki ROCKS!!!

Jay & The Americans - Greatest Hits Review

(More customer reviews)Back in the day, Jay Black & the Americans were ALL OVERNew York top-40 raido, with good reason. ... I could rave on and on about his voice, which comes through wonderfully on this CD.
Most of their biggest hits are here, like the incomparable "Cara Mia" and "Come a Little Bit Closer". Also here is one of my heartfelt favorites, the tragic "She Cried". While not as commercially successful as other songs, this was ... Obsison-like in its tragedy.
I took away one star, though, because another Jay & the Americans collection called "Originals" (also available on Amazon) has a handful more songs. Some, like "Let's Lock the Door" were commercial successes. Others were not as popular, but equally as good.
Either, way, though, you cannot go wrong with these guys or therse collections.

60's: Gold Review

(More customer reviews)'60s GOLD is the latest release in Hip-O Records' "Gold" series. As usual they do a fine job in remastering and song selection--and amazon.com's discounted price makes this a real bargain! I have purchased several previous "Gold" series releases (SOUTHERN ROCK, '70s, BLUES, among others) and have always been pleased, and this is no exception.
However, here are a few points to consider:
*Most of these tracks are from the mid-Sixties. Twenty-six of the tracks were released from 1964 to 1967--eleven from 1967 alone! [Note: All tracks are presented chronologically.]
*There is a heavy emphasis on Motown hits. [Five of which are duplicated from MOTOWN GOLD.] My only concern is why was it necessary to include three(!) Supremes songs?
*The British Invasion is represented by only three artists--The Mindbenders, The Troggs and Procol Harum. The heavy hitters (Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, et. al.) are missing. Also, two of America's biggest bands--The Beach Boys and The Doors--are also MIA.
*Finally, with each disk under sixty minutes, it would have been easy to add another ten to twelve tracks and perhaps rectify some of the above concerns.
But if you're looking for a collection of songs guaranteed to satisfy your Sixties nostalgia craving, there are few releases that will provide that fix better than '60s GOLD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

There's not a misfire on this record.And as always their harmonies were superb,their musicianship perfect and they score a direct hit with each and every one of these tunes.
Two tunes,"Anyway you Want it" and "Everybody Knows(I still love you)" came off this album and did well on the charts.This album is also known as "Across Canada with the DC5".Also some of the music off this album and the previous one went onto the picture soundtrack of their movie,"Having a Wild Weekend"(available on video).
This album has everything from ballads to fast paced rockers and everything in between.The first tune "Anyway you Want It" redefined Phil Spectors' "wall of sound" coming in at a mere two minutes and 28 seconds.Two more are JUST over the two minute mark while the rest are UNDER that mark.They could pack more into 2-3 minutes than ANY group extant at the time.And ALL of their songs,this album included,still stand the test of time.
So if you can find this gem,by all means get it.
Dave Clark now owns all the masters to his own recordings and he releases CDs only when he feels the time is right and it is good from a business point of view.
Well Mr.Clark if the reception your former electric piano man/collaborator/songwriter/singer Mike Smith received on his recent tour of North America is any indication,the time is definitely right for a release of MORE material......please!!
To start,how about the ENTIRE catalogue......then we'll go from there.

(More customer reviews)Oh, my boy, my boy...what a treat for the fans in Rapid City, S.D. and Omaha, NE in the Summer of '77. Most of the "Elvis in Concert" album was taken from these two shows, which happened on June 19 and 21, respectively. Contrary to what a lot of music critics say, this is album is fantastic. Starting with the fan commments and the ominious, opening strains of "Also Sprach Zarathustra," one gets a sense of the excitement that Elvis created when he appeared "in concert." It was a happening! The Super Bowl, the World Series and New Year's Eve all rolled into one!!! This music on this CD starts with the most rocking version of "See See Rider" that Elvis ever did. Other standouts on this album: "You Gave Me a Mountain," "How Great Thou Art," (really beautiful and done with a lot of soul), "Hurt", "My Way," and "Can't Help Falling in Love." All in all, a great album. Don't let people who don't know what they're talking about fool you: despite his deteriorating physical health, Elvis did some of his best, most soulful work late in his career. This album really captures that flavor as well as the excitement that EP generated when he toured in the 70s. "Elvis in Concert" is a must-have album for any fan
