(More customer reviews)Luis Miguel's newest album Complices has received some negative comments which has surprised me. I've mostly been surprised by the specific criticisms since I had a different take than what I've seen out there.
First of all, Luis Miguel's interpretive style is very well known and has been very successful for him. That he's been criticized for his "classic" style and lack of "innovation" is somewhat puzzling. I love innovative and inventive music, but I love traditional music as well. If I want to hear innovation I look elsewhere. If I want to hear beautifully sung Spanish ballads and boleros, I will listen to Luis Miguel, Vicente Fernandez, and the other greats in that genre. Innovation is great, but doing what you do best is also great. There is nothing wrong, in my mind with him playing to his strengths and making more of the same kind of music.
I bought the album without even knowing many details about it beforehand. As far as the song writing, I was surprised to learn that all the songs were written by one writer, Manuel Alejandro. To me that makes the album more impressive, because I think most of the songs are great and very well written.
The production and recording value of these songs are also top notch. Some types of music is criticized for being "over-produced." But when it comes to classic love songs, ballads and the like, this type of professional production is the only way to go. Professional and clean production is one of Luis Miguel's strengths.
The one thing that I didn't like about this album were the 3 pop songs that seemed to be thrown in at random and completely out of the flow of the songs they followed. I'm surprised to hear no comments on those tracks, except for one positive comment. To each his or her own.
Perhaps I am wrong. But I found those tracks to be too much in the 70s style. I had more than one flashback of "The Love Boat" listening to them. They include "De Nuevo Al Paraiso," "Estrenando Amor" and "Tu Imaginacion." I just found those songs to be "corny" for lack of a better word. Now I have to create a new disk by removing those songs. Normally I like disks to include more music, but this disk would have been a 5 star recording if those three tracks had been left in the studio.
Still, almost every other song on this album is a possible hit. The title track, "Complices," is a clever play on words. But my personal favorites are "Dicen" and "Si tu te atreves." "Amor de hecho" and "Se amaban" are good too.
Once again, this album has been panned by some who have outgrown Luis Miguel's style or never liked him in the first place. If you really listen to the entire album front to back, you will see there is some great music in here. If not for those 3 pop songs, this would have been a classic start to finish.
Leave the pop to Cristian Castro as far as I'm concerned. If Luis Miguel sticks to his own style of interpretation, he will continue to churn out hit records no matter who doesn't like his classic style.

Poquita Ropa Review

(More customer reviews)Siendo un fiel admirador del trabajo de Ricardo, y habiéndolo seguido durante su carrera profesional iniciada hace ya tantísimas estaciones acá en Guatemala, puedo decir con sinceridad que este es uno de sus mejores trabajos. En efecto logra transmitir de manera muy diferente lo plasmado en sus letras, a través de las canciones arregladas con "poquita ropa".
En lo personal, me gustan muchísimo "Vida" y "Todo estará bien"; de las canciones nuevas del álbum, para mi son las que más destacan (a pesar de que el sencillo del disco "Puente" es el que la mayoría de personas conocen, habiendo sido el primero impulsado por la disquera/Arjona. Sin embargo, me fascinó encontrarme con "Qué voy a hacer conmigo?" y "Mi País". En el caso de la primera, forma parte de sus temas "inéditos" a nivel internacional (al menos yo lo tengo en un CD compilación lanzado por una disquera guatemalteca con temas que lanzó acá en Guatemala al inicio de su carrera, y siempre me gustó mucho la letra - el contenido - de la canción (si tienen oportunidad de conseguir la grabación original, tendrán la oportunidad de escuchar a un "primerizo" Arjona que deja ver desde el inicio esos destellos de talento e ingenio que hoy por hoy le caracterizan).
En el caso de la segunda, "Mi País", es una canción que siempre me gustó mucho, y de la cual tenía únicamente una grabación hecha en algún lugar del mundo a manera de 'bootleg', y de la cual me hice incondicional; siempre quise creer que fue escrita por un Arjona nostálgico cantándole a la Guatemala que dejó atrás, y que hoy por hoy le resulta totalmente ajena, desconocida, aunque nunca extraña o indiferente.
Dentro de todo, un disco que definitivamente vale la pena. Las cuatro canciones que mencioné son las que primero resaltaron para mi, y con las que me identifiqué. Pero después de haber escuchado el disco 3 veces seguidas el mismo día que lo compré, puedo decir que le tomé un gusto especial... y en efecto, las canciones como las mujeres resultan mejor con "poquita ropa".

Luis Miguel sabe hacer canciones rítmicas y sabe cantar baladas. En Cómplices (su disco antetrior, uno de sus mejores pero menos comerciales) dejó de lado lo primero para darle más voz al sentimiento y las letras profundas y maduras de Manuel Alejandro.
Hoy, el artista ha tomado las riendas de la producción de su disco y se ha involucrado en las letras, quizás menos poéticas, pero que funcionan bien para el estilo musical desenfadado y "popero" que nos presenta con este material.
Un disco muy rítmico con canciones que tienen madera de clásicos, entre ellas "Mujer de Fuego" que mucho recuerda a su otro gran éxito "Qué nivel de mujer"; también "Siento" tiene potencial para trascender al igual que sus baladas "No existen límites" y "Lo que queda de Mí", ambas de Armando Manzanero. La primera de ellas quizás sea una de las mejores baladas de toda su carrera, pues además en este disco, Luis Miguel se ha reinventado interpretando canciones lentas. La tesitura de su voz es distinta y lo sabrán reconocer quienes conozcan sus discos y tengan el oído educado.
Se lo podría reprochar a este disco su corta duración y la ausencia del compositor y productor Juan Carlos Calderón, a quien muchos esperábamos ver por ahí en los créditos, pues mucho se dijo de su participación en este disco. También son un poco reprochables los arreglos de las baladas que son iguales en casi todas y aun iguales a las de discos anteriores. Pero la realidad es que obviando ese aspecto, cada balada es una joya a nivel interpretativo.
Más de lo mismo, sí tal vez, pero no suena del todo igual. Hay cierta sofisticación en este pop, una sofisticación sutil pero que sin duda conquista el oído.
