I waited months to listen to the finished product that is Dos Mundos...and thankfully, I wasn't disappointed. I love the fact that Alejandro has decided to take a risk in making two albums at once. And two albums with two completely different genres. That takes courage!
I'm gonna start off with his "Tradicion" album. I was VERY skeptical when I heard he was going to be working with Joan Sebastian. I thought he was making a big mistake in doing so, but I was wrong. Dead wrong. I was very surprised when I heard the entire album. Each song holds its own ground, and has its own story attached to it.
1.) Pecadora 4/5: I like this song. I love the lyrics and the melody.
2.) Me Dueles 5/5: Definitely a beautiful song. More of a ballad.
3.) Estuve5/5: This song was the first song he released and rightfully so. It's very catchy and the lyrics are nothing short but romantic.
4.) Unas Nalgadas 4/5: This song cracked me up! It's pure comedy and pure genius.
5.) Bandida 4/5: There isn't much to say about this song, except that personally, I loved it. It reminds me of the Mexican culture.
6.) Nada De Ti 3/5: This song has to yet grow on me. The tune reminds me too much of Joan Sebastian. And it should, because he wrote it...not my favorite.
7.) La Seven 4/5: A duet with Joan Sebastian. At first, I hated this song. But it has grown on me and now I love it. It reminds me of "Unas Nalgadas" very funny. A fun, catchy song to sing along to.
8.) La Historia Que No 3/5: Again, not my favorite.
9.) Ya Se Acabo 4/5: This song is catchy and has a great melody to it.
10.) Mi Rechazo 5/5: My favorite song off the album by far! It was written by Marco Antonio Solis, a musical prophet! Beautiful song!
11.) Maldita Costumbre 3/5: Could have been better. It's an okay song.
"EVOLUCION"
I feel like this album was made for me. I love all the songs on this album. His voice has never been so good before...I fell completely in love with it.
1.) Me Hace Tanto Bien 5/5: A great song to kick off the album. His voice sounds amazing in this song. Almost as if he was playing with it, trying to reach new heights with his voice. AMAZING!
2.) Cuando Digo Tu Nombre 4/5: I really like this ballad. What caught my attention were the lyrics. It's almost as if you're reading a poem.
3.) Se Me Va La Voz 5/5: The first song that came out to represent this album. Very catchy, very pop.
4.) Cielo de Acuarela 4/5: I'm in love with his voice in this song.
5.) Tu Amor Perdi 4/5: Very beautiful and soft ballad. Very relaxing, very romantic.
6.) Dibujando un Corazon 3/5: I didn't really like this song. This song can be easily skipped.
7.) De Nada Sirve Hablar 4/5: Another beautiful ballad.
8.) No Lo Beses 5/5: Honestly, one of my favorite songs on the album. You almost feel as if you're listening to an entire orchestra playing along with him. Just breathtaking.
9.) Una Lagrima en el Corazon 3/5: Not one of my favorites.
10.) Imagina 5/5: Another one of my favorite songs. This man has a beautiful voice!
11.) Manana Es Para Siempre 5/5: You've probably heard this one before. Beautiful song.
12.) Celebracion de Amor 5/5: A very beautiful song that he says he dedicates to his children.
I am so very surprised by both of the albums. A lot of artists nowadays produce the same music for years. Alejandro found a way to change and evolve his music. And it takes guts.
So when I read that they expected more from him. I ask them "what exactly did you expect? The same music he has come up with in the last couple of years?" I would find it completely annoying and frustrating if he decided to sing the same type of music he has been singing over and over again. I'm glad he decided to take a risk.
The risk paid off.
Two beautiful albums just in time for the Holidays.

I'm amazed at how "el sol" can still sing his heart out in every single song in the album! Being his first mariachi album, it came out as everyone expected it...EXCELLENT. "Entrega Total", "Un mundo raro", "Cielo Rojo" being my personal favs! Way to go LM!

Luis Miguel's newest album Complices has received some negative comments which has surprised me. I've mostly been surprised by the specific criticisms since I had a different take than what I've seen out there.
First of all, Luis Miguel's interpretive style is very well known and has been very successful for him. That he's been criticized for his "classic" style and lack of "innovation" is somewhat puzzling. I love innovative and inventive music, but I love traditional music as well. If I want to hear innovation I look elsewhere. If I want to hear beautifully sung Spanish ballads and boleros, I will listen to Luis Miguel, Vicente Fernandez, and the other greats in that genre. Innovation is great, but doing what you do best is also great. There is nothing wrong, in my mind with him playing to his strengths and making more of the same kind of music.
I bought the album without even knowing many details about it beforehand. As far as the song writing, I was surprised to learn that all the songs were written by one writer, Manuel Alejandro. To me that makes the album more impressive, because I think most of the songs are great and very well written.
The production and recording value of these songs are also top notch. Some types of music is criticized for being "over-produced." But when it comes to classic love songs, ballads and the like, this type of professional production is the only way to go. Professional and clean production is one of Luis Miguel's strengths.
The one thing that I didn't like about this album were the 3 pop songs that seemed to be thrown in at random and completely out of the flow of the songs they followed. I'm surprised to hear no comments on those tracks, except for one positive comment. To each his or her own.
Perhaps I am wrong. But I found those tracks to be too much in the 70s style. I had more than one flashback of "The Love Boat" listening to them. They include "De Nuevo Al Paraiso," "Estrenando Amor" and "Tu Imaginacion." I just found those songs to be "corny" for lack of a better word. Now I have to create a new disk by removing those songs. Normally I like disks to include more music, but this disk would have been a 5 star recording if those three tracks had been left in the studio.
Still, almost every other song on this album is a possible hit. The title track, "Complices," is a clever play on words. But my personal favorites are "Dicen" and "Si tu te atreves." "Amor de hecho" and "Se amaban" are good too.
Once again, this album has been panned by some who have outgrown Luis Miguel's style or never liked him in the first place. If you really listen to the entire album front to back, you will see there is some great music in here. If not for those 3 pop songs, this would have been a classic start to finish.
Leave the pop to Cristian Castro as far as I'm concerned. If Luis Miguel sticks to his own style of interpretation, he will continue to churn out hit records no matter who doesn't like his classic style.
I hope you'll check this out.
Enjoy.

This is "quickie" project that presents some of the most known recordings of the great Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. This project does not include any liner notes, nor the original release dates, nor is remastered. You do not know what generation of the Mariachi Vargas your are hearing on this compilation. The Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan has been around for five generations, the first generation from 1897 to 1930, the second from 1931 to 1949, the third from 1950 to 1993, the fourth from 1994 to 2002, and the fifth from 2003 to date. Clearly, the songs presented here seems to be interpreted by the third generation of Mariachi Vargas around 1958-1968. I am basing it on the voices, which I can match from other original records (i.e., not compilations) of the early years of the third generation.
It is sad that this project and similar compilation projects (Lo Mejor de lo Mejor (BMG Latin, 2000), 100 Anos de Musica by RCA) have not taken the time to remaster these classic recording period from Mariachi Vargas de Tacalitlan nor has taken the time to provide even a brief history of this mariachi (You can go to Wikipedia, if you want to learn a little about this wonderful Mariachi history).
If you are looking for quantity and not necessarily the best sound or if you are looking for previous generation of the Mariachi Vargas, you will be well served by this CD compilation (The best Of Mariachi Vargas -- again it is the 3rd generation --) or by Lo Mejor de Lo Mejor Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan (another compilation by BMG/RCA), Lo Mejor de RCA Victor by Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan. If you would like to learn a little about these songs or the musicians of these generations, you will have to find it somewhere else (Wikipedia is not a bad place to start).
If you are looking for a more recent sound of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, I would recommend the fourth and fifth generation:
a) 75 Aniversario
b) Aniversario 100: Canciones Mexicanas Que Canta el Mundo Ploygram 1997
This is a great compilation of traditional songs interpreted during the 100 Anniversary tour of Mariachi Vargas, Highly recommended. Sound is great.
c) 5ta. Generación (2002).
