(More customer reviews)Steve Perry has been behind the Reissues this past year with the Journey CDs and his solo material. Most included bonus tracks, and For The Love Of Strange Medicine is no different. The CD itself sounds incredible. The static that was in the background mildly on the original 1994 release is gone, and the original tracks have been remixed with today's technology. This remixing gives them an absolutely brilliant sound. There are even a few added parts to a couple numbers that sound great as well. Since this CD has never been previously remastered, it gets a new face lift with this release and shines. It truly is a testament, though, to the perfectionism of Steve Perry. He knows the sound he's looking for and finds the way to get it.
The most obvious thing about this release, though, is the bonus tracks; two of which have never before been released. "If You Need Me (Call Me) and "One More Time" were released with the singles that came out with the original Strange Medicine release, along with several other songs that reappeared with the Greatest Hits release. The first unreleased track is "Can't Stop." It is an interesting track, to say the least, and gives you a look at a side of Perry that hasn't been heard often. It's a bluesy track with some scat from The Voice, and some lyrics that are unusual for Perry in that they don't deal with the ordinary subject matter of his songs. His traditional vocal patterns aren't on this track either, making it even more unique. It's a song you almost have to develop a liking for. The second unreleased track is "Friends of Mine," which any Perry fan will like. It's a fun song that is classic Perry at his best, including the long, soaring high notes and the vocal patterns that made the man famous. This track sounds as if it belongs on this CD, and is one of my personal new favorites. These two songs, as the CD's booklet will tell you, were originally recorded for Perry's yet-to-be-released album "Against the Wall" from a 1988 recording session. The final track is a live recording of "Missing You" from his tour of Strange Medicine that has been floating around on download forums and programs for years. It's a rare glimpse of his last outing as a performer.
Finally, one of the last reasons to get this album, even if you already have it, is the accompanying booklet. Not only does it contain the usual (acknowledgments, song list with musicians and writers) but also many photos, some unreleased, from the photo shoot for the album and the tour. It also contains all the tour dates, where and when they were performed. Lastly, to open up the booklet, a note from Steve Perry himself re-introducing the album to you.
I would highly recommend this album reissue. I know there are many who don't like the reissues of the Journey albums, and that I can understand, but this album has never been re-released and sounds great. The bonus tracks and booklet alone should be enough to get the die-hard fans to buy this, but I would also recommend it to anyone who likes Steve Perry in general, the casual fan, or lovers of great music. This is one singer that has had a spectacular career in music, has been on the top, and is now living the life he has earned. The one thing that puzzles me about this release, though, is the timing. Lately, Perry has been reissuing a lot of things from his past. The Journey Music Video DVD, the Houston Concert Collector's Set, and now the reissuing of his entire recorded catalog. He's also made a couple appearances on other musicians' CDs (Jeff Golub and David Pack). What confuses me is the title question: Is Steve Perry wrapping up his career? Tying up the loose ends and saying good-bye to his fans? Or is he staying behind the scenes, waiting...slowly working his way into the public eye again in preparation for one more outing? Only time will tell. If you are a fan of this man, though, I would recommend picking this one up if you are able to. You won't be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)"Rasied On Radio" has been called "too pop" by some fans,but I like this album very much,thank you.The main reason to pick up this reissue is the the remastered sound( by Dave Donnelly),since it is a vast improvement over previous CD editions.The bass and midrange are increased,giving songs like "Once You Love Somebody","Positive Touch","It Could Have Been You" and the hits "The Girl Can't Help It","Be Good To Yourself","I'll Be Alright Without You" and "Suzanne" a kick and punch that wasn't there before.Its also contains two live tracks(I'll Be Alright Without You" and "The Girl Can't Help It") and is packaged with a cool booklet featuring photos and tour dates from the "Raised On Radio" period.Unfortunatly,this would be the final album for Journey until a short-lived Steve Perry-led reunion CD("Trial By Fire")appeared in 1996.

(More customer reviews)I won't go into the over the top review like some younger fans might do (which is plenty alright with me) but being closer to Neil Schon's age then Chris Daughtry's age it wouldn't come out right :)
I've been waiting for way to long for Journey to come out with an effort worthy of me sitting down and writing this review. Generations was ok, Arrival was nice but Revelation brings me back to when I was 18, in love with my high school sweetheart and attending every when Journey show played in my area. I go way back to pre-Steve Perry days. It has never been cool, maybe until now, to be a Journey fan. Back in my day you had to be a metal fan or you were a loser. The thing that always drew me to Journey was the phenomenal abilities of all of their musicians and the voice. The strong melodies, the rockers and the ballads. Really the whole package. A Journey album to me was always like reading a #1 Best Selling Novel. You just can't put it down or turn it off.
I say the voice because it is as much an instrument as the rest. Journey would not be Journey without a classic tenor at the helm. For me the 'voice' was always Steve Perry, he is simply the best voice I've ever heard in Rock and Roll.
With that being said, Arnel Pineda has taken the stage with the other members of our supergroup and simply amazed me. Neil describes him as a soulful singer. I really think that is the best description of him. Thank you Arnel for bring back 'the voice'!
If you're a Journey fan at all, you know what I mean when I say, you put the CD in the player, sit back and smile. When Journey puts out a new CD all is right in my world. This one is so highly recommended by me that there isnt' a number high enough to give it. Just buy it and you'll see what I mean.

The electric keyborad has come and gone from time to time in pop culture, however, this album does not sound dated because the songs are very solid. All of the early Petra albums are great anywayl.

(More customer reviews)I also just saw this concert on PBS, and was FLOORED. It is obvious that these guys have been performing live, non-stop since the late 1970s. On stage, these guys are a well oiled machine. The talent and skills are higher now than when they released Hi Infidelity. My wife and I watched this concert over and over on our Tivo, and like this live concerts vertions of the REO songs better than the original album vertions. The audio and video quality of the broadcast concert were outstanding and I hope it is on this DVD also. I am trying to find this concert on Blu Ray, but if it is not offered that way, I will still buy the regular DVD vertion because this is a performance I know I will enjoy with my wife for years to come.
After being so impressed with this, I will admit that my wife and I went to the REO Speedwagon web site to see if we can go see them live in concert! I have not been to a concert in over 20 years, but can't wait to see these guys in person.

Corporate America Review

(More customer reviews)OK, first and foremost this is not a bad album. It's pretty decently written, melodic, sometimes energetic power pop (or softside of hard rock), but when reviewing it, we should never forget that this is Boston/Tom Scholz, one of the most underrated geniuses of popular music, and responsible for some of the most imaginative, intricate, beautifully crafted, detailed and exquisite mainstream rock music of the last fourty years.
So if the label said Corporate America,the new XXXX album, all would be acceptable, even alright. But being Boston, it's intolerable. Why on Earth did Tom have to copy Oasis of all bands in the utterly insignificant Cryin'? Why did he have to bow to market trends he never followed? Surely not for commercial reasons (the album, being released on a small label was destined to small sales figures from the start).
The worst of all is that this sounds rushed,unfinished, disjointed and bland. I don't mind an experimentation here and there, but this album lacks any cohesiveness in it. It's like a compilation of different styled singers and writers with the same backing band. Furthermore, considering it took him seven years to complete, makes this even less palatable. What happened to the melodies? They're forgettable, reheated versions of either older Boston songs or, even worse, other people's stuff.
What happened to the production? Who on Earth allowed Tom to use those dreadful drum hi-hat sounds yet again? Why does a Boston album sound as if it was played by one guitarist and a bass player with a machine drum? Where are the cathedral orchestrations and attention to arrangement detail?

In previous times we have seen Tom hit and sometimes miss but always with the saving excuse of his perfectionism and craftmanship, because one could feel the gargantual effort and monumental work devoted to each note, each sound. This is not an album that took so many years to record, as Third Stage or even Walk On proved with their multitude of angles and musical corners... This is an album that might have taken years "to release", but sounds as if it was written, recorded, and (worst of all) produced and engineered in Ramones-like time... which would have been nothing negative (I value the Ramones a lot) if it sounded fresh, innovative and raw. But instead it sounds bland and undistinguisable from any one of the hundreds of substandard low-key melodic rock releases plaguing record shops worldwide.
Redeeming features: The marvelous I Had A Good Time, and You Gave Up On Love, worth at least a listen. Wait for the next one.

Domino Effect is the third album of theirs I have purchased, and once listened, couldn't belive that Domino Effect was better than Lip Service. WOW
Domino Effect has songs that will appeal to anyone, and doesn't allow you to get bored with it when you keep on hitting the replay button.
This album is a must for any Gotthard fans, plus anyone out there, that wants to try something different and doesn't want to be disappointed.
Well recommended. (PS if you get chance to go and see them on their Domino Effect Tour - Do so - ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC :-)

Styx, Reo Speedwagon - Arch Allies: Live at Riverport (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Styx and REO Speedwagon, two of the most successful bands of the 70s and 80s, launched a very successful tour during the summer of 2000, and this concert video was filmed during their tour stop in St. Louis. The video is divided into two parts, with each band performing seperately. Styx is up first with their new keyboardist/singer Lawrence Gowan. Gowan replaced Dennis DeYoung, who was kicked out of the band a year earlier. In my opinion, Lawrence Gowan is not nearly the singer or keyboardist that Dennis was. It was hard watching another person sing Dennis' songs, especially the classics "Lady" and "Come Sail Away". Yes, there's still all of Tommy Shaw's songs, such as "Fooling Yourself" and "Blue Collar Man", but Lawrence just doesn't do justice to Dennis DeYoung's songs.
Part two of the video features REO Speedwagon, who can still put on a fine show. Classics such as "Roll With the Changes" and "Keep on Loving You" still sound as good today as when they were released. Kevin Cronin's voice is still as good as ever.
There are also two songs featuring both bands playing together, these being REO's "Roll With the Changes" and Styx' "Blue Collar Man". If you enjoy classic rock and roll from the 70s and 80s, then pick up this video.

Cyberpunk Review

(More customer reviews)Those of you who won't touch (even with a 10' pole) anything Techno-like, are truly missing out here. Yes, this album has a major Techno element, but the strong guitar gives it the hard edge that we've come to expect and want from Billy. People who criticize this album, are forgetting one of the things that Billy Idol is known for: He combines elements of Rock, Pop, Punk, and Dance. That's right, folks, Dance has been there right from the start. The difference with Cyperpunk, is that it was released in 1993, when the Dance music of choice was Techno. But this is much more than a Techno album. It's a concept album containing brilliant soundscapes, and Billy's vocals are no less than top notch. Also on this album, you will find some of his best lyrics.
So what are these multiple uses that I refer to in the heading? First of all, this CD would be a great choice to play at a club where people dance. However, ironicly, it's also a great album to relax or fall asleep to. Or perhaps you just feel like jumping in the car and going for some night driving, because that works, too! And last, but not least (probably not even last), this is a fantastic album to have sex to. Billy Idol's vocals are very sensual, and many of the rythms are erotic.
Unless you hate all Techno music with a passion, you'll want to have this gem in your collection. So don't leave Billy dancing with himself! Give it a try!

Long Cold Winter Review

(More customer reviews)Cinderella's debut featured bluesy rock which was reminiscent of AC/DC. On their follow up they up the rootsiness factor while still rocking in late 80's fashion. The result is a winning album that is an overlooked classic of 80's hard rock.
The album starts off with some harmonica and a national steel guitar while Tom Keifer sings a blues as an intro to "Fallin' Apart At The Seams". It works wonderfully. It's worked so that the key riff of the hard rocker is alluded to and then played on intentionally "historic" sounding guitar. "Gypsy Road" follows which is another riff rocker with a riff Keith Richards probably wishes he wrote. Following that is the excellent "Don't Know What You Got Till It's Gone" which is a fantastic power ballad. Probably the best thing about it though, not to detract from the song, is Tom Keifer's excellent solo. Another standout rocker in "The Last Mile" follows. Other standout tracks include "Long Cold Winter" which is in the vein of Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You" with some stirring guitar and "Coming Home" which is a great country rock ballad. "If You Don't Like It" is the kiss-off/screw you song that every good rock album needs and works on that level. "Second Wind" and "Fire And Ice" recall the band's debut "Night Songs" with the latter being the superior track. "Take Me Back" rounds out the album with some kickng drums with cowbell and a great slide riff, and a rootsy upbeatness.
The thing about this and Cinderella's next album ("Heartbreak Station") is that they started showing a way out of being pigeon holed in the "hard rock" scene. Cinderella were stretching the boundaries of what the hard rock and mainstream audiences would accept. At the same time though there were rockin' out with a fury. Tom Keifer's Janis Joplin/Brian Johnson voice may not be for everyone, but the guy always played a mean guitar, and here with Jeff LaBar is just a great rock CD. It's been lumped in with dreck for so long. It stands up a lot better than many of the stuff that was on "Headbanger's Ball" at the same time. And maybe oneday "Long Cold Winter" will be acknowledged as the great rock album it is.

(More customer reviews)"Frontiers" was Journey's follow-up monster 1981 smash "Escape" and proved to be just as commerically successful,peaking at #2(held back only by Michael Jackson's Thriller)and spawning four Top 40 hits, including "Seperate Ways(Worlds Apart)","Faithfully","After The Fall" and "Send Her My Love".The album is just as good,if not better,than its predeccesor,containing other standouts(besides the hits) like "Chain Reaction","Edge Of A Blade" and "Rubicon".The only poor song on this album is the grating "Back Talk".Luckly,this 2006 reissue contains four bonus tracks that strenghten this effort much more by including "Only The Young"(a top 10 hit from the "Vision Quest" soundtrack in 1985),"Ask The Lonely"(which was featured on the "Two Of A Kind" soundtrack in 1983)"Only Solutions"(featured on the 1982 "Tron" soundtrack)and the short but outstanding "Liberty".The remastered sound(by Dave Donnelly,NOT Dave Collins as one reviewer said)is a vast improvement over the previous CD editions,making Steve Perry's vocals,Neal Schon's guitar and Jonathan Cain's keyboard's sounding more powerful and clearer than ever before.It also includes a cool booklet containing photos and tour dates from the "Frontiers" era.Essential for any Journey fan or 80's pop/rock lovers!

Escape Review

(More customer reviews)This is a reissue of the 1996 remastered edition along with the 4 bonus tracks. I bought this hoping that it had been newly remastered, but the sound is identical to the 1996 cd. "The Essential Journey" from 2001 is louder and has a better mix (as in you can hear the instruments better and clearer) than this 2006 cd. The live tracks on this cd can all be gotten on the 2006 "Live in Houston" cd and the sound on that cd is better, clearer, and louder than on this reissue cd ("Reissue" is written on this cd wrapper not "remaster"). I'm a bit of a fiend for remasters and I did play them "side by side" and can hear no difference from the 1996 to the 2006. The only true new thing on here is "La Raza Del Sol".
So this is great if all you've got is the original cd release, but do realize that this is not a 2nd remaster. Get the "Essential" disc if you want that; it's the closest there is and it does sound better than the 1st edition remasters. Of course, not all the songs are on there that I'm sure you want. I'd like to see all their albums remastered like the "Essential" is. But oh well, it's not here.

Journey: Live In Manila (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I will not discuss the price of the DVD as part of this review, since the DVD is a Walmart exclusive and the only way to get it for the tagged price is if you go direct to merchant.
With this DVD, Journey marks the first time it tops the Billboard's Top Music Video Sales chart. Their 2005 release Live In Houston 1981 - The Escape Tour peaked at number nine. Also, Live In Manila has the second best DVD debut sales week of 2009, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
This concert was indeed shot at 4K resolution, but you are not getting that kind of resolution except nothing different from the regular DVD quality movies you have in your home. The quality is actually limited by the DVD format.
The concert was made by the team from "Wizard", who brought with them an army of "Red Cameras". They shot at 4K, beyond high definition of display resolution. Even Blu-ray cannot touch the hi-res of a 4K. OK, it is a DVD, and for now it does not mean anything. But somehow, it is nice to know that maybe, hopefully, sometime in the future, there will be a chance to see it in its full lifelike resolution.
The first thing that will catch your eyes is the nice art work. Classic 80's, psychedelic, LSD inspired :), both inside and outside, a magnificent showcase of album art. It is a nostalgic trip back to one of the golden eras of music. It includes an 8-page brief retelling of the succession of events that lead to this historical concert. Journey stayed for 2 weeks in the Philippines. Their new lead singer brought them to see his humble beginnings; his old neighborhood, his old school where he was forced to drop out for lack of money. Homeless at the age of 13, he brought them to the park where he used to sleep at night, often in an empty stomach.
No doubt, this live performance (March 14, 2009, in front of close to 30,000 fans) is one important piece of history for the band. As we know, the band had their ups and downs, the break up, the succession of singers, and even a scandal. Journey is one of the monster melodic rock bands in the history of rock & roll. 80 million records under their belt, including their last album, "Revelation", which is now a cinch to become double platinum. The "Journey: Live in Manila" debuted at the Oprah Winfrey Show, which made a lot of people searched the internet to find out who the hell is Arnel Pineda. That special appearance propelled Arnel Pineda's name to #8 in Yahoo's top ten searches the next day.
The concert is very special to Arnel. 2 years ago, he was virtually unknown. Then Schon's discovery on YouTube, and then everything happened so fast that even Arnel admitted that all the blessings that he has received has not sunk in yet. A story that reminds you about the movie Rockstar, but this time it is happening in real life.
24 songs, the 2-DVD package is a 2 hours and 25 minutes of classic Journey hits including 7 songs from their last album. You can really feel Arnel's emotion and happiness performing in front of his fellow countrymen. He is bouncing around, jumping, covering every inch of the stage. Guitar god Neal Schon never fails to amaze the audience which is why he is one of the greatest living guitarist of our time. At the same time, he is showering the front stage with his signatured picks as fast as a ninja throw his stars. Jonathan Cain and his multiple level of keyboards still hammers those keys like he used to in the MTV version of "Separate Ways". Ross Valory always is the band's clown, making as many faces as Jim Carey can in his "Dumb and Dumber" days. And lastly, Dean Castronovo (who used to play with Black Sabbath) provided well appreciated respite for Arnel by belting out "Kepp on Runnin'", "Mother Father" and "Still They Ride". An incredible singer/drummer combination.

Styx - Return to Paradise (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD, bought last year, was my first music/concert video purchase. It was a good choice and led to about 30 more purchases over the last 6 months or so. The video is clear, camera work is good and the sound is great. I was using an old Dolby Pro-Logic setup when I bought this but have since upgraded to a full DD 5.1/DTS home theatre system. This DVD sounded really good with my old system but, in comparison, sounds awesome now. In this concert (the songs are listed somewhere else on this page so I won't repeat them), Styx performs most of my favorites and the band is tight. I saw them live in Houston back in the 80's and again this year at the Rodeo in the Astrodome - not a good venue for concerts. But this live concert on DVD is better in many respects since you get to see the band close-up and the sound is almost as good as being there, if you have a good sound system. Also, I think the current Styx lineup misses something without the great voice of Dennis DeYoung. So, if you like the original Styx lineup, this is the DVD to get. Also, if you like to see closeups of the musicians when they are playing, the camera work with respect to that is fairly good. I've seen better on other DVDs but you do get some shots of JY and Tommy doing the riffs from some of the classic Styx hits.
I would say this DVD a must-have for STYX fans and very entertaining for anyone else who likes "middle-of-the-road classic rock" (i.e. somewhere between "soft rock" and "heavy metal"). I give it 5 stars based on 1) video and camera work, 2) 5.1 sound track and 3) the fact that I've always liked Styx's music and most of my favorites are on this DVD.

Journey 2001 (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)I am a Journey fan of all eras. I bought "Arrival" when it came out last year, and it was definitely my favorite CD of the year. I also saw the band in concert last summer and found their performance nothing short of stunning. I knew that there was no chance that I wouldn't absolutely love this DVD before I bought it, and I was right. Nonetheless, in watching it I was still surprised how good it is.
The reason for my surprise is simple: I have never heard better sound quality on a DVD. I cranked this DVD through my stereo speakers and felt like I truly was at the concert. The production could not be more crisp and clear.
Now to the more obvious part of my review: the songs and performances were all top-notch. This does not look like a band that has been around for nearly 30 years. Steve Augeri for sure brings a youthful energy to the band. He of course sounds great on the new songs he sang on "Arrival", but he also absolutely does all the Steve Perry classics justice.
I hate to say it, but the best thing for Neil Schon was for Steve Perry to leave this band. As the true band leader once again, he plays with a flamboyance that is remarkable considering the number of years he had been doing this. It is so obvious to me that he and this band have a new lease on life. Watch this performance and I think you will agree.
For sure, many of the classics and all of the biggest hits are here. From the rockers like "Stone In Love" to the ballads like "Faithfully" (which was the beautiful, touching way the band closed this performance), the songs are all masterfully performed. Like other reviewers, I am impressed with the inclusion of the rare "La Raza Del Sol".
Bottom line: DO NOT listen to those that say this band is done because Steve Perry is no longer with them. Obviously, he was great and contributed much to their success, but he was not the only important component of the band. Watch this performance and see how great this band still is. The outrage should not be that Journey is going on without Steve Perry, but instead that this band in its new incarnation is not getting the recognition it so richly deserves. If you are a true fan of Journey in particular and classic rock in general, do not give up on this band! And for sure, this DVD comes strongly recommended.

(More customer reviews)"H.e.a.t" is a new hard rock/AOR band from Sweden very much in the style of "Europe"," Aldo Nova" and "Treat". The Group has already made its presence well felt in Europe endorsing probably the youngest members of the Hard Rock/Glam metal scene.
The band comprises of Kenny Leckremo (V), Dave Dalone (G), Eric Rivers (G), Jona Tee (K), Jimmy Jay (B), and Crash (D). Apart from being technically proficient and overall tight a band, "H.e.a.t" separate themselves from the stereotype "new kids on the block" simply because of their ability to compose and perform such incredibly rocking tunes that would rival even the most experienced and confident veterans on the glam scene (for example their fellow Swedes "The Poodles".)
Continuing on this note quite a few of the songs on this release, their debut, have that classic quality, delivering the impression that you've heard the tune somewhere before; a quality that is incredibly hard to come by and even least expected from a band in their early 20s. The songs in question are "Straight from your hart", "Feel it again" and the mid tempo "Cry". All three tremendously rocking songs with undeniable radio quality.
Apart from the highlights the rest of the album is pretty good yet quite overshadowed by these three potential hits. Still if H.e.a.t can perform as consistently on their debut, expectations on their follow up deserve to be huge.
You simply can't escape singing along the choruses on this one.
