BEFORE:
The poster-girl of sweet wholesome pop music, Olivia began changing her image in Grease and the "Totally Hot" album which followed suit. She also had appeared in the movie Xanadu, which flopped but had a hit soundtrack. This was to be her first studio album in three years.
AFTER:
The title track was a #1 hit for ten weeks (making it the #1 song of the 1980's), the album went double platinum and peaked at #6. The album had another top five hit with "Make A Move On Me". Olivia was on top of the world at the moment. Hosting SNL, preparing to open Koala Blue, and embarking on a wildly successful 1982 tour. This was the peak of Olivia's popularity.While Physical, the track, has been overplayed to the extent that the song is a caricature instead of an actual record, the album as a whole retains as the strongest album of Livvy's career.
1. Landslide (5/5) is the perfect leadoff single. The song is fast, dancy and sets the pace for the record.
2. Stranger's Touch (5/5) is even better (a shame it wound up on a b-side). The sexiest moment off the album.
3. Make A Move On Me (5/5) is a classic and is catchy as hell. The video was terrible but the song makes up for it.
4. Falling (5/5) is a beautiful acoustic haunting ballad about falling in love.
5. Love Make Me Strong (3.5/5) is a good song but probably the worst track.
6. Physical (5/5), what needs to be said about it? everyone knows this song.
7. Silvery Rain (5/5). Olivia was caring about the environment back when most of the "environmentalist" rock stars weren't even signed yet. The song rocks and is one of the best of the album. Starts out like a mellow 70's ONJ rock song and then becomes a rocker during the chorus. Even though Cliff Richard did the song a decade before Livvy, you can tell she deeply cares about the lyrics.
8. Carried Away (4.5/5). A pretty Gibb ballad that was originally written but then rejected for Barbra Streisand's "Guilty" album, and it probably wouldn't have fit there because it's structured a little too much like "Woman In Love". A soothing upbeat early 80's ballad you could listen to in the tub.
9. Recovery (4/5) kinda reminds me of "(Want You) Back In My Life" by The Carpenters. Kind of a tropical sounding sound with very audible John Farrar background vocals.
10. The Promise (4.5/5). Another environmentalist ballad. Very beautiful and Olivia sings about her love for dolphins (you can hear dolphins in the background). A beautiful song.
I would love Universal to remaster this (I know there's an import) and add some bonus tracks from the period... I heard Olivia recorded a demo of "I Paralyse" around this album, which ended up being recorded by Cher the next year (which was produced by Farrar too)

Who's That Girl: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Review

(More customer reviews)Ok, Who's That Girl is one of the most underappreciated movies made by Madonna. The critics and SHOCKINGLY the fans feel iffy about the intire movie. The very thought of fans bad talking the movie makes me emotional. The movie was MEANT to be a campy-like comedy and those who GET Madonna GET it PERIOD!. As a die hard fan of Madonna's since my childhood, I understand the intent of the movie's material and it IS a REAL GOOD movie. Most importantly, let me just say that the ''Who's That Girl'' song will FOREVER be inspirational to me. It started in 1987 when I was going on 6 years old and MTV was on almost if not every home television set. I would watch MTV videos, and at 6 years old in the 80's let me tell you that music videos seemed like HUGE peices of million dollar art work. Well, the summer of 1987 was when I first viewed Madonna's video for Who's That Girl and I remember dancing to it, laughing at the movie clips intertwined in the video, and most importantly the little oh' so adorable Madonna cartoon throughout the video--that cartoon made me the artist that I am today!. I have been drawing since 1987 (Grade School), and sketching throughout Jr. High, held some awards in High school for drawing and now I design for clothen options for future opportunities like fashion designing, advertisement and/or cartoons. I am honored with the gift and talent I possess but I must say that I do owe part of my talent to Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone for sparking that talent hidden within that I (of course) always had. Madonna touched me then with her cartoon debut in the ''Who's That Girl'' video and nothing she does today goes unloved by me!. Oh' and let's face it, the song is one of the most rhythm driven songs of her's among MANY--''Causing A Comotion'' and ''The Look Of Love'' are definitely 2 major greats as well!

Bad Animals Review

(More customer reviews)Trying to overcome the 'Heart' comeback album, Ann and Nancy, surpassed it with 'Bad Animals'. This album is not only brilliant, but beautiful. 'Wait for an Answer'. was my favorite off this one. Ann's voice is so full of desperation, that anyone who's ever had a broken heart will fall into the trance that this song creates. I always considered this album to be a 'concept' album because of the feel of it and the way the songs go in a particular order. 'Who will you run to?' is a song of breaking up, followed by 'Alone'. The song finally ends with 'RSVP', also a great song which leaves the listener guessing whether they got back together since 'Who Will you run to?' or if it's a new love all together. This album is one of my very favorites when I'm depressed or 'Alone'.

(More customer reviews)If you can believe it, this is the first review I've ever written for an album, despite being an amazon customer for years. Why? Because I'm just so damn disappointed in all the negative reviews of A Thousand Suns.
First of all, let me say that I'm not a lyrics person. What I take away from LP's music is a feeling, an emotion, and so far I gotta admit that I'm loving the feeling I get from this album. No, it is not like any of their previous works (though I think we all saw where they might be going as a band after MtM). No, it is not nearly as angry as Hybrid Theory. And no, it is not nearly as catchy as Meteora. So what the hell is it?
To me, it's a recovery album. This may be lost on some readers, but if i picture LP's albums as a man going through life, I see their early music as a very wounded and angry man. The catharsis in listening to those albums comes from realizing that not only does someone else out there hurt as much as you, someone out there may actually hurt even more. I revel in listening to those early CDs for that reason. When Reanimation came out, I saw a slightly more playful side to LP. The wounds were still there, but they were being examined now, looked at in an almost clinical, curious way. Minutes to Midnight disappointed me at first, I'll admit it. The wounded man was no longer angry, but I still was. It took me several looped listens to come to terms with the fact that he had moved on, and was beginning to let some of the old grudges go. It's not a tired album - far from it - but MtM does give one the sense that LP was getting tired of fighting all the time. That they were searching for solace.
A Thousand Suns, then, in my view, is Linkin Park's first glimpse of solace. Listening to it, I see the wounded man internalizing his anger differently now than in Hybrid Theory, taking the weight of his troubles on his own shoulders rather than throwing them onto others. A salve of sorts is applied to some of the old scars, though a few new cuts are evident too. It's not a happy album by any means, but it is peaceful, in a way only LP can make industrial noise sound. It's also not a simple album; I am sure that future listens will reveal even more about the music to me. But for now, I felt the need to let other hesitant buyers know that I trust LP pretty implicitly with my musical soul. Whatever journey they want to take me on, I'm willing to go for the ride. And I'm willing to grow up with them too, if that's what they ask of me.

On the eve of its completion, this body of work, assembled through unconscious inspiration and unmitigated exertion, has revealed to us notions both stirring and surprising. The album's personified imagery is neither dogma nor political premeditation. The emergent themes and metaphors illuminate a uniquely human story. 'A Thousand Suns' grapples with the personal cycle of pride, destruction, and regret. In life, like in dreams, this sequence is not always linear. And, sometimes, true remorse penetrates the devastating cycle. The hope, of course, springs from the notion that the possibility of change is born in our most harrowing moments. Enjoy the music.
