when it comes to listening to music i try to avoid comparing the bands new cd to their previous ones. with tbs, this is hard. "tell all your friends" is without a doubt a classic album and is the best in this genre of music. there's no denying that. then nolan left the band and tbs changed its lineup and "where you want to be" was the result. despite the different vocalist and sound, i thought "WYWTB" was a excellent record and was close to "TAYF" but not quite.
now comes april 25 and "louder now" is released and upon first listen, there's no doubt that TBS have progressed as a band. whether their progression is a positive or a negative, i don't know. that's up to the listener. i myself love when bands think outside the box and evolve and keep doing so for each record they put out (i.e. saves the day). although they're initial sound with "TAYF" is no longer present i can't help to enjoy their progression and the fact that they finally made a rock record.
like my review title says, they have unleashed the guitars and the whole feel to the album is just more rock. yes, tbs is the definition of emo and there's alot of emotion here, but as for the musicianship it's just a lot better than their previous two. there's actually guitar solos in half the songs. true, they signed to major label warner bros so i think this rock transition is appropriate. i hate when people accuse bands of selling out. i admit that i hate when bands sign for the money and not for the right reason which is to reach out to more people. but unless the band says they did it for the money, don't accuse them for it! just let it go and sit back and enjoy the great record they created which is "louder now"
for fans deciding whether they will like this, you will. if you're a true tbs fan you'll definitely appreciate this album. if you're a trendy emo kid and you would live and/or die for their first record, you might want to preview first. half the songs are trademark tbs but the other half are experimental and even kind of dark with extra emphasis on the guitars. lyric quality is close to their last album (not any where as good as TAYF) and the songs are catchier then ever with unbelievable hooks.
standouts are "what's it feel like to be a ghost", "make damn sure", "miami", and "my blue heaven". the whole cd is solid and this will be in the top 5 of 2006. definitely recommended.

The bands Warner Bros. debut, Louder Now, takes the group's classic ethos of intertwining vocals and hardcore meets-rock-meets pop to an even more enticing level. Taking Back Sunday is taking back rock.

Those of us fortunate enough to have bared witness to the career of this amazing artist since the beginning, know we have been and continue to be in the presence of absolute one-of-a-kind greatness. Those that haven't and think they know and have heard greatness, you can't even imagine.
Even if one isn't into this genre of music, you owe it to yourself to purchase this DVD and experience some of what so many of us have had the pleasure of for what's approaching now 50 years! I tell you, you will become magnificently enlightened because there's been no other vocalist to date that can come close. Yes, she IS that much better than any other.
You will hear the message in every song, every expression. A message of truth and passion from an artist who must have been inside the heart of every songwriter whose songs she has interpreted through her soul and her magnificent vocal instrument. There can be no other answer to how she is able to convey the depth and meaning of a song, all the while commanding you to listen to the lyrics and feel the meaning the way the composer had intended, and all without you even realizing it. You will find yourself waiting to exhale after every powerful note, but the greatest power is in her ability to deliver a note so softly, so gently, as nearly a whisper--it will leave you breathless. I'm sorry, but you don't need to scream and high-power through every song to show you can sing, like so many today. The true artistry is in the nuances, the subtleties.
I recommend this DVD to anyone truly interested in having your heart and soul, not just your ears, entertained. And when you're done with this magnificent selection, treat yourself to Streisand from the beginning, from Funny Girl through the years to this piece of work . . . then you too will understand what millions of us have been experiencing for nearly five decades, and why we feel we have been in the 'presence of true greatness'.

The third edition of the SF Jazz Collective plays the songs of Herbie Hancock (and one original per member) and trades Isaac Smith for Andre Hayward on trombone. If you've heard the first two SF Jazz discs, you can predict what you're getting on the third. There's the arrangements of a jazz great, and straightforwardly great jazz playing. All of the songs are tasteful, and don't ruffle too many feathers.
Disc one starts with "Parallelogram", which takes some time to build up steam, then turns into a satisfyingly slanted song. The first thing I noticed was that these CD's will play more quietly than most, you'll want to turn the volume up on your stereo. "And What If I Don't" is, like all of the Hancock songs, a very good arrangement with melody intact and very good soloing. "Sudoko" is, like the title predicts, a tricky-sounding Payton composition. "Serene Intentions", by Hayward, has a descending melody. "Actual Proof" is the sole representative of Hancock's funky side, and the Collective keeps it fun.
Disc two opens with "Collective Overture", which has "simple melody" and "complex melody" parts sandwiched around the solos. "Maiden Voyage" has a long Hutcherson feature. "Mirror Images" has an nice evocative melody. "Imminent Treasures" is a nicely evolving Hutcherson-penned song. "Triumph" sounds at first like a fanfare, but by the third note is really quite soft. It's mostly one of the quieter songs, though there's a long section towards the end where vibes and piano play a repeating figure under a thunderous drum solo.
The two disc version is very good, I'm sure the more readily available one disc version will pare off some of the weaker songs, but you can't halve the length without removing some very good songs.

Pink - Live from Wembley Arena (2007) Review

This is the must-have concert from the amazing P!nk, featuring 2 hours of video and 21 great live tracks. The big surprise for me on this concert was the addition of some incredible circus-class acrobatics, as P!nk sings live while doing some very demanding stunts suspended 50 feet above the stage, no net,in a routine I could only compare to Cirque de Soleil. This woman is in top physical shape, and her vocals have never been better. From heart-wrenching ballads like "Dear Mister President" to pop-rock like "Get the Party Started" and "Trouble", this eclectic performer is definitely on top!
I purchased this disc from Amazon to get the UN-EDITED version. It is not that I crave explicit lyrics, P!nk does not use them to excess, but does not hold back when it is appropriate to her statement, and I just cannot see buying a concert that is bleeped as found at WMart. Why they can sell uncut splatter films, but feel compelled to censor musical artists is beyond me...Amazon comes through with the uncut version as the artist intended. Even on this "explicit contents" disc there are a couple of bleeps in the bonus feature footage probably because it aired on MTV, but at least none during the concert itself.
