When Michael Jackson died on June 25th 2009 it seems a part of the world died with him. It made many people sad all over the world and it seems that for once everyone was being nice to this man who had always been abused by the Medias; journalists, interviewers and others. When I heard of the "This Is It" movie concert I didn't know what to think. I knew it was rehearsal footage from the 50 concerts he was to perform at the O2 arena but I didn't know what was going to come out of it or what they were going to do with it. When I saw the trailers I knew I had to see this and that "This Is It" was going to be something special like I've never seen. And that's precisely what I got, I even bought my ticket in advance for the movie and feel like it was much worth it.
It amazed me how good MJ still was, the dance moves were great and fascinating to me. He was clearly the one in charge of the whole thing. He gave precise instructions of what he wanted, made sure everything was right and did everything that needed to be done. The film shows just how much Michael was respected, there were parts of it where they asked him if he wanted anything or what he thought and if he liked something, it seems no one assumed anything at all. When he talked the crew would listen and he asked things in the nicest way, never to hurt anyone. There's not a part that doesn't make him look like the nice guy he always was. There are mixed feelings about him after all the bad things that have been said about him but after watching this I don't know one could possibly believe them.
To be honest I loved every minute of it, every song was special and was great to watch. Right from the beginning of "Wanna Be Startin'Somethin'" it was amazing. No matter how many people surround him he's always the one who does things better than anyone else and the one you're watching. This Is It was really a unique experience, I felt they chose the right footage parts for the movie and made him look great in every sense. They could truly have messed things up but they didn't and came out with an amazing documentary, it's sort of a testament to his fans, it's just very special. I really liked the Thriller 3D part, it was a 3D video shoot and afterwards you see MJ coming out onstage from a spider, the show would have looked awesome. They Don't Care About Us was amazing, The Smooth Criminal part was very interesting, so was the Earth Song which had a beautiful video of a little girl in a forest, waking up to see that all of it has been destroyed. I won't go further but every song had something about them.
The stage show would have been grandiose, the fireworks, the "fireball" (quite impressive I won't spoil anything), pyrotechnics, the videos that accompany the songs are all very impressive. This could very well have been the best show ever had he lived to perform them. In the end I was quite amazed by the 1: 48 minutes I watched, I can't wait to see it again and the message Michael gives at the end is very inspiring. From the auditions of the brilliant performers to the credits with the "This Is It" song I was captivated.
The said special features will feature more of the rehearsal and a two part documentary on Michael's history and his comeback along behind the scenes. I can't wait to see more of the rehearsal and hopefully the extras will be great and there will plenty to watch.
It's hard for me to describe what watching this movie was like and what I felt about it. I know this is rehearsal footage but it's truly brilliant and while it main not catch Michael at his best it certainly catches him at his most honest. I don't have anything bad to say about either this movie or the man himself, This Is It is a must see. It doesn't matter if you watch in its theatrical run or on DVD/Blue Ray when released, this is amazing and his fans just have to see this. I will certainly be amongst those who buy it and watch it over and over again. This man gave his life to music and his fans and I don't remember where I heard or read this but I do remember that someone said: "He was a gift of god, he was a kind human being who's been mistreated by many opportunists, he's been taken advantage of but he was the nicest person and could never harm anyone" or sometime like that. These words are very truthful and really mean something to his fans.

I Love You Review

I Love You

At long, long last us eager, adoring fans are treated to a brand new studio album from the sophisticated, glamorous soul music legend ( a
full severn years since the release of the sublime and underated Every Day Is A New Day album). Titled, I Love You, this new Diana Ross album was met with much anticipation from myself - and no doubt from all of her millions and millions of fans all across the world. Well, believe me Diana Ross doesn't disappoint and she really delivers on this album, uncannily working her magic to full effect. What Diana succeeds in doing on the I Love You album is taking you with her on a poignant, musical journey, which was exactly her intention.
The I Love You project was produced by Diana Ross herself and Marylata E. Jacob. Each song for this artistically creative project was personally
selected by Diana. She had literally trawled through hundreds of songs to find the right songs that Diana felt she could personally identify
with. All of the songs on the I Love You project were somehow uniquely personal to Diana. Diana's intended ethos of the I Love You project was to
be a warm, captivating celebration of love and life. Diana approached the project as being an album that you could not only listen too and enjoy in the comfort of your own home but a collection that could be played at weddings, family gatherings and intimate moments.
The I Love You project delicately begins to unravel with a spine tingling, haunting renedition of Harry Nilsson's, Remember. Diana
had been listening to this pleasant and sentimental song whilst glancing through some of her treasured family photo albums. It was this
song that had given Diana the initial ammunition and inspiration for recording a new album. This soothing number is immensely theraputic which is light and dreamy, accompanied by a gentle piano back drop. Diana's silky yet deep, husky-sounding vocals elegantly drift up and down the mellow, mesmerising musical arrangements both seamlessly and beautifully. She projects her voice well, mastering it too pure perfection when hitting
those long, lingering notes.
Swiftly steering direction is the fun, bouncy I Love You (More Than Yesterday). This happy-go-lucky song had originally been recorded
back in the mid 1960's by Spiral Staircase. Diana quite effortlessly surfboards neatly along the wonderfully upbeat musical arrangements. Diana's lovely intepretation of I Love You (More Than Yesterday) is carried off with a fitting degree of subtelty and immense style and finesse. The song strangely fades out at seemingly the wrong
point as you can't help but conclude that the full climax had not been fully reached but that is by no means a criticism of the recording
because on the whole, I Love You (More Than Yesterday) is utterly fantastic and incredibly infectious!
Diana's magnificent reading of the Marvin Gaye classic, I Want You, shrewdly swerves into a late-night, contemporary R&B setting. Her
breathy, sensual, seamless vocal style effectively enhances the smooth-driving orchestrations, making this an absolutely outstanding version that deserves a lot of credit and recognition within its own right. A vastly contagious, slow-grooving number that fits brilliantly into this tremendous album. A lot of people to this day are unaware that this renowned Marvin Gaye classic had been co-written by Diana's brother, T-Boy Ross with Leon Ware.
I Love You (That's All That Really Matters) is the only original song to be featured on this divine album. Diana's renowned vocal expertise
for terrific, exalting love ballads like I Love You (That's All That Really Matters).
What About Love continues in a similar vein though indeed captures its own special, individual merits. This instantly memroable, touching intepretation that really conveys Diana's classy vocal style, had been written for the soundtrack of Oprah Winfrey's stage production of The Colour Purple.
That charisma and joyous feel-good spirit in Diana's distinctive and ever-sensational voice brims beautifully on a stirring, haunting intepretation of Hal David and Burt Bacharachs's, The Look Of Love. Opening with a relaxed Latin guirtar interlude that is extremely effective it steadily leads into gloriously sparse orchestrations. The Look Of Love contains a
soulful, gutsy performance from Diana that shimmers with honest, genuine emotion.
Lovely Day really is a stunning and masterful intepretaion of the familiar Bill Withers classic. The orchestrations, which includes
fabulous saxophone interludes erratically throughout the duration of the recording is ignited even further by Diana's totally beautiful, distinct voice. Once again she cleverly masters her vocals on the lingering notes required on the chrous, to utter perfection! A very commendable cover version, arguably eclipsing the original.
"Let's get ready to rock" Diana says at the triumphant close of this absolutely belting version of Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Indeed
you will all want to rock when listening to this number. Diana proves that she has certainly not lost none of that fire and cool sassiness. Lively and completely contagious, Crazy Little Things Called Love is bubbling with strong, assertive and playful vocals from Diana. Her voice is bright and energetic, enhancing the spectacular musical arrangements to startling effect. The marching drums and blaring brass encapsulates a
striking New Orleans jazz vibe which is accompanied by a wonderful guirtar back drop courtesy of the talented, genius muscian, Brian
May, who shot to fame with one of my own personal all-time favourite Rock group's, Queen. Brian May even went so far to declare after having heard
the final, rip-roaring version of Crazy Little Thing Called Love that "Freddie would be proud".
I have to admit I was most skeptical on first seeing on the track line-up that there was a version of Only You. It was a song I found difficult imagining Diana Ross singing. Well let me tell you I was totally astounded! Not only does Diana bring the song into a tasteful contemporary setting, fitting the times very well, but also breathes new life, fire and spirit into this vintage classic.
To Be Loved is yet another gorgeous and irresistable concoction. To Be Loved features the magical sound of the saxophone played throughout
the track. It shrewdly encapsulates a late 1950's vibe that is amicably given a sharp, contemporary twist.
Diana and one of her sons had seen Paul McCartney live in concert in L.A and she was immediately captivated by his song, I Will. Its simplistic
yet meaningful lyric is given most noble justice by Diana's beautiful, glowing voice.
This Magic Moment is positively heavenly with Diana's uplifting vocals that really is no overstatement to say are magical! As on remarkably every song on this album, Diana's unique vocal style sends cold shivers down the spine. This Magic Moment was originally recorded by The Drifters (one of Diana's favourite groups as a teenager) and is given a whole new lease of life thanks to Diana's great, unparalled talent.
It was reported that Billy Preston sadly passed away not long after Diana had finished recording his song, You Are So Beautiful for inclusion on
the I Love You project. Diana had chosen You Are So Beautiful for its universal message that like every song Diana has recorded (and were talking well into 4 digits now for the amount of songs Diana has recorded since her first with The Primettes - later The Supremes - in 1959 with
Tears Of Sorrow) quite simply, effortlessly manages to transcend to any age, gender or race. The touching lyrics draws upon relationships of
all kinds from lovers, mother to child, child to grandparent, sister to sister and friend to friend. It really is a fair comment to make that
only an artist with as much integrity, style, grace and extraordinary artistic vision as Diana Ross could record a song like this and so
effectively get that simple, yet strongly emotive message across to audiences all across the world.
Always And Forever is a sweeping, divine love song. Always And Forever had been penned by the acclaimed songwriter Rod Temperton and had first
been recorded by Heatwave. This is another soothing, mesmerising number that really captures Diana Ross's impeccable, distinct vocal style.
The I Love You album then gently winds down with a cracking reprise of the atmospheric Remember which had started the album off. A nice, fitting
way to end this dazzling, timeless album.
On top of that is a wonderfully entertaining DVD which will enthrall big Ross fans!
More than anything the I Love You project showcases Diana Ross's ageless appeal, conveying her wonderful craft for versatility. Her voice
seems to get incredibly even better and better with age. Her performances are fresh, vibrant and soulful throughout, igniting each song with a
renewed passion and confidence in her voice, giving each song a brand new lease of life. I Love You is a timeless collection that you will
just want to listen to over and over again. Even in fifty years time this album will firmly stand up well because of its special, universal quality
and its essence that really is impossible to become dated. The legendary, magical mystique of Diana Ross is captured beautifully and most
effectively on this album and one thing's for sure, Diana hasn't lost any of that sparkling magic that catapulted her into a worldwide,
phenomenal, first class superstar in the early 1960's. Listening to this superb collection certainly gives you a clear understanding as to
why Diana Ross offically remains the most successful feamle singer in the whole history of music. A definite classic and one of the
definitive entries in Diana Ross's lengthy catologue.Ian Phillips

The Stranger: 30th Anniversary (Deluxe Boxed Set - 2 CDs + 1 DVD) Review

The Stranger: 30th Anniversary (Deluxe Boxed Set - 2 CDs + 1 DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This new boxed set is released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Billy Joel's breakthrough album "The Stranger". The album, originally released in 1977, made Billy Joel a household name. To celebrate the 30th anniversary Columbia has put together a nice set. The first disc is the original album, the second disc is a live recording from his sold out Carniege Hall shows in June of '77. Aside from the pristine sound on this disc, what's interesting is to hear him introduce two of the songs from "The Stranger" that would become classics but at the time were unknown to audiences. "Just The Way You Are", in a slightly different arrangement receives only a smattering of applause at the intro, while "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" which is a huge concert favorite today receives almost no applause at the introduction. Overall it's a really great show.
The DVD includes two live promotional videos for "The Stranger" and "Just The Way You Are", a half hour documentary about the making of the album with recent interviews from both Billy and album producer Phil Ramone. Among other things you learn that the sax solo in "Just The Way You Are" is a combination of several solos that Ramone spliced together so that it was seamless. Also on the DVD is an additional one hour concert from England.
Depending on where you pick this set up, you will also get a bonus disc. If you get it at Best Buy it has five live tracks recorded in December of 1977 at Nassau Colliseum, if you get it at Target you get a DVD with live videos from previously released collections.
Finally the set also includes a replica of the Sold Out poster for Carniege Hall, a book about the album loaded with unseen photos and memorbilia all on glossy pages. The coolest thing though is a replica of Billy's lyric notebook for "The Stranger" with his handwritten lyrics and notes about the album. You even get the grease stains on the pages!!!
A very cool set, but one for diehard collectors. For the casual fan pick up the 2 disc set that contains just the original album and live Carniege Hall disc.

This video was my favorite movie when I was little and i still love it as a teenager. It begins with a live performance of Man in the Mirror. And then goes into a huge MJ medly wich include I Want YOu BAck, ABC, The Love You Save, Whos Loving You, Ben, Dancing Machine, Blame It On The Boogie, Shake Your Body Down To the Ground, Can You Feel It, Rock With You, Dont Stop Till You Get Enough, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature, State of Shock, We Are the World, The Way You Make Me Feel and Dirty Diana. Then we see a little kid version BAD. The clamation Speed Demon is next and is very funny. THen its the video Leave me Alone and then goes into the actual hour long Moonwalker movie. I think the best part of this whole video is the 10 minute performance of Smooth Criminal. Michael's dance moves during this song seem to defy gravity. He ends the movie with Come Together. If you stick aroung till after the credit you get the actual Smooth Criminal music video which is pretty tame compared to the movie version.

Chuck Review

Since Sum 41 burst onto the scene with their tongue-in-cheek, take it with a grain of salt hit, "Fat Lip," I've been a fan. While everyone was labelling them as a novelty and a passing fad, I was just hoping they would stick around to keep making more refreshing, fun and unique punk records. 2002's "Does This Look Infected" made good on a promise of more metal influence, and in turn created almost a new face for the band which is pushed even further on "Chuck." Now hold on, I know, to use metal and Sum 41 in the same sentence seems absurd, and may ruin what little chance I have of being accepted into any metal community, but Sum 41 embrace the old-school metal influences and turn them into completely original and, well, entertaining compositions. Sum 41 move further away from the label of just being snotty trouble makers and take things more seriously than ever before, with obvious Metallica and Iron Maiden influences to boot. The politically inspired first single "We're All To Blame" sets the tone for this album, a breezing, fast-moving piece that never lets you down for one minute. The next single "Pieces" embraces the more melodic and down-to-earth side of the band, while the almost Oasis-esque "Some Say" takes things in completely unexpected directions. The rest of the album is filled with familiar, fast paced songs that will put a grin on the face of any fan. Not bad for a band that rapped about Judas Priest and mullets in the past. If you never liked Sum 41 before, you might still like this album. It's got something for everyone, it's very entertaining, addictive, straight, and to the point. You don't have to be a fan of pop-punk to enjoy "Chuck," because Sum 41 are too good and too special to be placed in that category.

Just Go Review

Just Go
Average Reviews:

I really wasn't sure what to expect with this new CD, but it is amazing! I heard "Just Go" on the radio and instantly loved it. The title song's carefree chorus features Akon, who I think works very well with Lionel Richie. The song is real unassuming and likable, and it makes for a perfect song to listen to this summer. I thought Lionel's other song with Akon, Nothing Left to Give", was real catchy too. Akon's singing on this song is very similar to his work on Gwen Stefani's song "Sweet Escape".
"Forever and A Day" was very interesting, too. I thought the beginning of the chorus sounded a lot like those old Folder's coffee commercials ("The best part of waking up..." as compared to Lionel's "Girl, your the best part of me...") Whether it was intentional or not, it sure made me remember the song!
"Good Morning" is a beautiful romantic song that is a real joy to listen to. I think it's one of the best on the album. "I'm In Love" is another great song that's enjoyable and sincere without being too loud or complicated. The song's got a great chorus that's a lot of fun to sing along with.
Along the way, there were a few of the songs on here that weren't that memorable, but it doesn't mean they aren't good (for example, "Forever", "Pasttime", and "Think of You"). Even the "worst" song on here is "good", I think.
The highlight of the last half of the album has to be Lionel's duet "Face in the Crowd". I was surprised the song was so upbeat and not slow like "Endless Love", but it worked very well. I hadn't heard of the female singer before, but she did a really good job.
Another surprise was "Somewhere in London", a techno-infused song that is quite dancy. The album ends very well with "Eternity", a beautiful gospel-like song featuring a choir and wonderful message of unity. Great ending.
If you like Lionel Richie and you're an objective music listener, you have to check this CD out. As a young person (23) who appreciates older music and has a limited taste for the modern stuff, this album is perfect. There are very few artists who can pull off something like this, where they remain true to their style while updating it and marketing it to a younger audience. What a wonderful surprise this CD was!

Singer, songwriter, worldwide tour headliner, producer, Oscar recipient and five-time Grammy award-winning Island recording artist Lionel Richie gets into a new groove on Just Go, his first new studio album in more than two years, arriving in stores on May 19th, 2009. Just Go features some of today's biggest writers and producers, including Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Stargate and Akon, with Lionel sharing writer credits with Terius "The-Dream" Nash, Ne-Yo, Akon, Johnta Austin, and Taj Jackson. Lead single "Good Morning," produced by The Movement, blasts out to Urban AC radio today.Just Go is Lionel Richie's long-awaited follow-up to the RIAA gold Grammy-nominated Coming Home (September 2006), his previous studio album. The latter made chart history as the first top 10 album debut of his 26-year solo career, and spun off the #1 Urban AC chart hit "I Call It Love." Three weeks after the album's release, he opened a 7-week, 17-city headlining North American tour, sponsored by United Way. Lionel Richie's most recent project was Live In Paris (September 2007), his first concert DVD, which premiered on PBS television pledge drives across the country in August 2007, as part of the prestigious Great Performances series. The concert, taped at the Bercy Arena in May 2007, was made available on DVD with 19 live songs plus lots of extras: full-length videos for two songs from Coming Home, "I Call It Love" (shot in Los Angeles by director Jessey Terrero and starring daughter Nicole Richie) and "Just For You"; plus the ultra-rare clip of "Angel," from the 2001 album, Renaissance. Bonus material also included intimate, behind-the-scenes footage of Lionel and his team preparing for the Paris show. The DVD was issued separately and as part of a deluxe two-disc package coupled with the 14-song audio CD counterpart, entitled Live: His Greatest Hits, which was also issued on its own. Lionel Richie became a core member of the Island Records family with the release of Renaissance in March 2001, his first album for the label (and sixth overall career solo album). Since then, he has released Just For You (May 2004), the live album Encore (September 2004), Coming Home (September 2006), Sound Of the Season (December 2006, his first Christmas album), and Live In Paris (September 2007). Lionel Richie is a pop icon who has sold more than 100 million records worldwide in his career, and has the honor of owning an Oscar and Golden Globe Award (both for "Say You, Say Me," from White Knights) and a total of five Grammys (collectively for "Truly," Can't Slow Down, and "We Are The World"). Richie has the distinction of being the only songwriter in the modern pop era to write #1 song hits over the course of nine consecutive years: 1978 ("Three Times a Lady" with the Commodores), 1979 ("Still" with the Commodores), 1980 ("Lady" for Kenny Rogers), 1981 ("Endless Love" duet with Diana Ross), 1982 ("Truly"), 1983 ("All Night Long"), 1984 ("Hello"), 1985 ("We Are the World" with Michael Jackson for USA For Africa), and 1986 ("Say You, Say Me"). Lionel Richie's string of 15 consecutive top 10 R&B hits between 1981 and 1992 (five of which hit #1) - 13 of which were consecutive top 10 pop hits (also including five #1's) - stands as one of the most enviable achievements in chart history. His countless awards, also including multiple American Music Awards, NAACP Image Awards, People's Choice Awards, ASCAP Awards, the World Music Lifetime Achievement Award, and more, were capped when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2003. Lionel Richie is an iconic artist who refuses to live off of the greatness of past laurels. Upcoming TV Performances include "CBS Sunday Morning" on May 10th. Over 100 concerts planned for 2009 in US, Europe, Australia and Asia.

Have listened to this CD non-stop since purchasing it after hearing "Jessie" for the first time on the radio. Not one bad song on this CD. "Beautiful in My Eyes", "Beau's Radio Love Line" and "Picture Postcards from LA" rank as my favorite. When he released "Delilah Blue", purchased immediately and felt there was NO comparison to PDS. Recently gave it another listen, and after getting used to a different style, listen to as much as PDS.
Thanks to the postings here about his website, I ordered both CD's offered there and those who can't get enough of PDS, these two releases are songs in the style of the ones on PDS. He writes on his site that he is working on his 3rd Studio album and should be out the first part of next year. Can't Wait!!

Louder Now Review

when it comes to listening to music i try to avoid comparing the bands new cd to their previous ones. with tbs, this is hard. "tell all your friends" is without a doubt a classic album and is the best in this genre of music. there's no denying that. then nolan left the band and tbs changed its lineup and "where you want to be" was the result. despite the different vocalist and sound, i thought "WYWTB" was a excellent record and was close to "TAYF" but not quite.
now comes april 25 and "louder now" is released and upon first listen, there's no doubt that TBS have progressed as a band. whether their progression is a positive or a negative, i don't know. that's up to the listener. i myself love when bands think outside the box and evolve and keep doing so for each record they put out (i.e. saves the day). although they're initial sound with "TAYF" is no longer present i can't help to enjoy their progression and the fact that they finally made a rock record.
like my review title says, they have unleashed the guitars and the whole feel to the album is just more rock. yes, tbs is the definition of emo and there's alot of emotion here, but as for the musicianship it's just a lot better than their previous two. there's actually guitar solos in half the songs. true, they signed to major label warner bros so i think this rock transition is appropriate. i hate when people accuse bands of selling out. i admit that i hate when bands sign for the money and not for the right reason which is to reach out to more people. but unless the band says they did it for the money, don't accuse them for it! just let it go and sit back and enjoy the great record they created which is "louder now"
for fans deciding whether they will like this, you will. if you're a true tbs fan you'll definitely appreciate this album. if you're a trendy emo kid and you would live and/or die for their first record, you might want to preview first. half the songs are trademark tbs but the other half are experimental and even kind of dark with extra emphasis on the guitars. lyric quality is close to their last album (not any where as good as TAYF) and the songs are catchier then ever with unbelievable hooks.
standouts are "what's it feel like to be a ghost", "make damn sure", "miami", and "my blue heaven". the whole cd is solid and this will be in the top 5 of 2006. definitely recommended.

This is my first foray into the remastered Geffen Metheny releases. I have heard they sound great and I don't doubt that: the fact is they already sounded great in their initial release. What drew me to this one was the promise of a second disc containing five unreleased songs from the Secret Story sessions. More on that later.
By the mid 80's Metheny felt stifled by ECM's pressure to make albums in one or two days with few or no overdubs and in 1985, left to make studio albums that took advantage of the advanced processing and mixing capablilities of the studio, an approach almost completely contrary to Manfred Eicher's european aseticism. Eicher's aesthetic worked quite well for most of the artists in his catalogue, even some of Metheny's own CDs, (As Fall Wichita Falls comes to mind,), but never seemed to gel for the Metheny Group albums. The Geffen people gave Metheny the time and sophisticated environment he needed to realize his vision. That vision was never more focused than on this side project, Secret Story. This was to be Pat's most personal and ambitious statement of his career.
Even without the extra disc it was a massive epic, clocking in just under the 80 minutes allotted for the CD format. Yet in 78 minutes or so, nearly every human emotion was explored, from the religious ecstasy of Above the Treetops, through the earthy optimism of Cathedral in a Suitcase, the epic transcendance of Finding and Believing, the forlorn longing of Tell Her You Saw Me to the soul searching strings of Antonia. It is a profoundly honest work, sweeping the listener along a journey through youth and innocence, discovery and heartbreak and finally to acceptance and healing. I have always suspected that the subtext of this album was a story of love and loss but with Pat Metheny being the very private person he is, it is likely that story will remain a secret one.
So, the two things most fans will want to know the answers to:
1.How does it sound? Well, it definitely sounds better. Parts are more defined and the bass seems deeper and wider. The overall soundstage seems wider as well. It is a quantitatively better sounding master. I would not say that the difference is startling, but it is quite noticeable.
2. How are the five new tracks? I have only listened to them twice, but my impression is that they are, like many of the tracks on the original, cinematic and evocative. They just didn't make the cut. And while I can understand why these didn't make it to the original SS release due to time considerations, quality etc, I wouldn't exactly dismiss them as throw aways. On the other hand, I would say that they are not essential to the arc of the original Secret Story release, which stands on its own as whole and complete.
The first track features Toots Thielemans and reminds me a bit of the ballad from the original CD, Always and Forever. I would say Always is the superior composition, which I am guessing is why this track didn't make it to the CD, but I like the atmosphere of this piece very much and Pat's guitar solo is quite beautiful. And it's always a treat to hear the one and only Toots. Clocking in at almost 6 minutes, it is the centerpiece of this new material.
The second tune reminds me of the earlier Metheny Group sound with Pedro Aznar. The vocalist is not identified-it might very well be Pedro, probably the most soulful singer the group ever had. If you liked First Circle you will be pleasantly reminded of that high point in the career of the PMG. But don't expect too much-this tune is a relatively simple mood piece that doesn't develop beyond a simple repetitive structure.
The third tune is a short piece scored for harp and strings. Pat doesn't play on this track. It contains more of the somber tone that emerges towards the end of the first disc. A beautiful miniature that fits right in with the Secret Story journey.
The fourth piece, primarlily scored for strings, is written in a modern tonal classical style similar to Gorecki. I just wish it wasn't so short. It would've been nice to hear some development. It ends just as it seems to settle in.
The fifth tune is Metheny at his lightest and silliest. Sporting a jaunty whistle-down-the-street melody, it hints at Pat's affection for Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb and exudes the goofy optimism one associates with a score to a 60's coming of age film or TV theme, all innocence and naivete, yet enchanting nonetheless. Makes you almost wonder if in an alternative reality, Pat might've had a successful career scoring for television.
I wish that all the PMG remasters had these sort of extras. I'd buy them in a heartbeat.
In short: Highly recommended just for the improved sound alone, especially for those who are already fans of this ambitious masterpiece. The bonus tracks are icing on an already sumptuous cake.

The New York Times called Pat Metheny’s 1992 Grammy Award-winning Secret Story the most sweepingly ambitious album that the jazz guitarist has yet recorded...a nearly 80-minute world-music suite with symphonic underpinnings. If the album functioned then, in the words of critic Stephen Holden, as part travelogue and part soundtrack for a nonexistent film, then this expanded and re-mastered edition can best be described as the director’s cut. Composer and guitarist Metheny revisited and restored five previously unreleased tracks in the studio over the last year, and he’s collected them on a bonus disc. More pastoral in tone than most of the original material on Secret Story and with a decidedly cinematic, orchestral feel these tracks are like the deleted scenes from a deeply evocative yet wordless narrative feature. Back in ’92, Metheny declared that Secret Story was unlike anything I’ve ever done. It’s the largest in scope - 80 people were involved in the record - but it's also the most intimate record I’ve done.

As the title of my reveiw suggests, I'm getting tired of hearing and buying cover albums from my favourite group of all time. When I heard the boyz were planning on releasing an album I got excited then I heard its yet another cover album and I asked why?
Not only is it a cover album but the songs selection are terrible. "Time after Time" has been covered to death. "When I Fall In Love" good colaboration with my fellow Canadian Buble but again its been done way too many times. "Amazed", "Misty Blue", "In My Life" & "Open Arms" in my opinion are girl songs and don't fit at all.
My enjoyable picks are "If You Leave Me Now","Shining Star","Back For Good" and the suprise "Iris". The only reason I'm giving this album 4 stars is because I'm biased when it comes to Boyz II Men. The singing and production is very good and faultless they almost sold me on the terrible song selections but I couldn't change my opinion on that.

Now what Boyz II Men need is to find a bass singer(can you tell I miss Mike)get together with good producers like Jimmy & Terry, Babyface,Daryl Simmons, David Foster and the Underdogs and record some new ballads. I'm itching to hear brand new Boyz II Men because 4 covers albums is a little too much. I would hate to think that the Boyz II Men legacy has been reduced to cover albums. Otherwise enjoy this if you can.

Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing Review

Love, Pain and The Whole Crazy Thing

It's sometimes hard to take Keith Urban seriously as an artist. After all, songs such as "Once in a Lifetime" were written specifically to be radio hits. It's unfortunate that only his lesser material (for the most part) gets radio airplay, because looking at his albums overall, one gets the sense that Urban truly knows how to craft a fine piece of music.
LOVE, PAIN, & THE WHOLE CRAZY THING is a great record, and let me tell you why. Sure, it has its ready-for-radio tunes, but we'll look beyond that. What we're looking at, specifically, is Urban's musicianship: what other chart-toppers today can boast that they play guitar, bass, ganjo, piano, and various other odds-n-ends on their records? Not many. What other artist today can write an instant chart-topper, alongside tunes that require a bit more thought-processing? Not many. What other artist today can amass such a following, and yet still feel compelled to prove himself time and time again? Urban could sit back on his heels and enjoy the success he's gained...yet, as the non-standard production of "Got It Right This Time" shows, he's still experimenting with what he can do. Listen to the bass line of "Faster Car" (played by Urban), and not feel that Urban has something else to say. Listen to the drum/guitar solo of "I Told You So" and not feel like you're in the midst of a revolutionary rock record.
So maybe Keith Urban isn't "revolutionary." But he's definitely pushing the bar. He is a super-talented singer/songwriter, who hasn't let his success limit him. LOVE, PAIN & AND THE WHOLE CRAZY THING is a great pop/country/rock record, with more emphasis upon the latter two. The songs are by and large standouts, and the musicianship is stellar. Urban has another winner on his hands here; don't miss this one.

Grammy Award winner and reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year Keith Urban has completed the follow-up to his nearly four times platinum third album Be Here. Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing (Capitol Records Nashville) contains thirteen brand new tracks and is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The album showcases Urban's consummate songwriting and vocal talents, as well as his searing guitar work.Co-produced by Dann Huff and Urban, Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing, includes ''Once In A Lifetime,'' (John Shanks, Keith Urban) the album's first single, which upon its release last month became the highest debuting single since the inception of the Billboard Chart. Highlights of Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing include the bold, contagious rockers ''Faster Car'' (Urban) and ''I Told You So'' (Urban). Songs such as ''Shine'' and ''Used to the Pain'' exhibit Urban's ability to produce infectious melodies that patiently build to a musical climax. While brilliant songs such as ''Stupid Boy,'' ''I Can't Stop Lovin' You'' and ''God Made Woman,'' an anthemic tribute to women, all show Urban's ability to select and interpret songs written by others.Said Urban of Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing; "It's just an accurate reflection of where I'm at now. I think it's the sound of being happy and extremely excited with the music that we're making.''--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

When describing Ricardo Arjona's new album, adjectives like stripped down, barely there and in the nude all come tomind. 'Poquita Ropa' (Almost Naked) is a collection of Ricardo Arjona's songs in his purest form both lyrically and instrumentally, surrounded by the bare minimum musical instruments to compliment and accompany his bohemian voiceand deep intellectual lyrics. This album is musical art in its purest form; in the nude. There are twelve great songs on 'Poquita Ropa' including a beautiful 8-minute track called 'Puente' (Bridge), dedicated to all the Cuban people who have been separated from their roots due to ideological circumstances.'Poquita Ropa' is a unique recording that complements the great albums of Arjona's successful career. A musical jewelthat is sure to become a fan favorite.

Taylor Swift is one talented teen! She had a hand again in every song on her highly anticipated sophomore CD - this time she wrote 7, and co-wrote 6. The first single, "Love Story" is a good example of how she can combine great lyrics with a catchy beat - and then produce a smash crossover hit. The most remarkable thing about the album is that it is incredibly balanced...and almost every song is so good that it could be released as a radio single. I think it is now safe to say that she is a rising star who will just keep on rising!
Taylor opens the album with the strong title track "Fearless", and ends the album with the powerful theme song of the summer Olympics, "Change". In the middle is a sure huge hit "The Way I Loved You" - a song that she wrote with John Rich. "Fifteen" is her most personal song, a bittersweet gem where she sings about her freshman year and her best friend for the past 5 years, Abigail. "White Horse" (which has already been featured on Grey's Anatomy) is a well written tearjerker - a heartfelt song that is just waiting to become her next blockbuster hit. A good example of her more acoustic side is "Breathe" - a simple song written with Colbie Caillat who also sings background vocals in the song. Taylor's writing seems to have matured and grown in the past 2 years. Take "The Best Day" for example - which is a completely different but awesome song, which is written about her family. She appeals to a wide audience, and executes this so well here on Fearless.
It's incredible how quickly Taylor crossed over and became not only a big country star, but a huge pop star also. It took only her second single - Teardrops On My Guitar - for her to become amazingly popular in mainstream music! Then she continued to release 3 more hits (two of them #1) off her debut album. Talk about a hard act to follow - but I can't see this trend stopping anytime soon with Fearless - this album is a major home run. She isn't the same country artist who sang "Tim Mcgraw", and I understand that some people will not be happy about that. If there are any flaws here, it would be that many of the songs are pop-country hits which are about the same subject - teens. You can't please everyone, but look for her to just become even bigger and more popular, with more #1's and crossover pop smash hits. Taylor's sophomore CD is very well done...filled with excellent, self-penned, radio-friendly top 40 hits! Overall ~ 9/10 ~

True Stories I Made Up Review

Being offensive and raunchy is all-too-often an easy target for most up-coming comics. If you can't think of a good joke, then insult someone and some people are bound to laugh. Daniel Tosh, in this CD/DVD combo, does say much that is offensive, insulting, crude, gross and vicious. But, if this is believable, his comedy isn't just malicious. It's smart.
His jokes rarely follow any kind of predictable formula, and as a result, some people might find them as weird and bizarre as they are dirty and foul-mouthed. Really, though, he demonstrates a nimbleness of humor when he goes off on one of his tumble-down rants. As he says, "I like to do a joke that everybody likes and then keep taking it farther and farther until nobody has a clue what I'm talking about." It's true that you might end up confused more than once, but you'll still be laughing.
The only thing this set has against it, as others have said, is its brevity. It's normal for any good entertainer to leave you wanting more, but Tosh leaves you wanting almost TOO much more. The CD barely clocks in at 50 minutes and the DVD is about 30. Still, this is made up for by the fact that Daniel's crude complexity and incisive gibes are imminently listenable. A rarity for most comedy CD/DVDs, this one withstands multiple replays and then some.
Detractors of this set (and Daniel Tosh, in general) have accused him of being derivative and low-brow, racist and demeaning. It's very easy to look at any kind of medium, be it music, movies, or comedy, and call it a mimicry or "rip-off" of something that came before. You could pick any entertainer and trace their lineage all the way back to the days of Euripedes if you want to be a stickler about it. And those people who are offended or "hurt" by Daniel's humor aren't listening closely enough; true, he takes a lot of shots below the belt, but let's put it this way: he doesn't discriminate against crotches. Everyone (from whites to blacks, from women to men, from intellectuals to morons) is up for grabs. If you want equal respect for all people, Daniel wants equal disrespect, and he petitions for it with finely-tuned hilarity and cinder block wit.

Tosh is currently one of the most requested comic headliners in the country and has evolved into one of the most popular and successful college acts, performing at over 700 campuses. He's appeared multiple times on Letterman and Leno, and was recently seen on MTV's "Punk'd". Previous TV credits include "The Late, Late Show With Craig Kilborn", "Jimmy Kimmel Live", "Last Call With Carson Daly", "Premium Blend", "The Best Week Ever", "The Test", and "Friday Night Stand-Up". All his best material (over 50 minutes) on one CD. The DVD compiles his best Comedy Central performances, including the highly rated "Comedy Central Presents".

To the Sea Review

To the Sea

Jack's new release 'To The Sea' feels like a day at the beach. It has a more raw, upbeat feel than his other CDs, but I think thats a good thing. There's nothing groundbreaking here, but Jack is not a groundbreaking artist. He is true to himself, and I think the direction he went with this CD is positive. There is definitely a noticeable influence from Zach Gill on this record, but I dont think that is a bad thing. Some people will complain that he's moving away from the simpler acoustic stuff, but for me it is a welcome change. Jack has turned it up a notch from Sleep Through The Static, IMO. Top to bottom its a rock solid CD that almost any Jack Johnson fan will like.
You And Your Heart - 8/10 - Took a few listens to grow on me, but its solid and a great opener to the CD. Great video, too.
To The Sea - 8/10 - A home run. Funky, fun, and just plain good. Love the guitar work near the end. Very Hendrix-like. This will be new vintage Jack in a few years.
No Good With Faces - 9/10 - I LOVE this song. One of the best on the CD, IMO. A simple song with a haunting feel. But lets not get ahead of ourselves, theres more songs to review...
At Or With Me - 10/10 - Wow. Best song on the CD, IMO. This song was recorded in a single take in the studio as a demo, but they liked the raw feel so much they put it on the CD. Very upbeat, very catchy, and a great live jam. Unlike anything hes ever done. Love the blues harp that comes in unexpectedly towards the end. I hope he keeps this in his live setlist. Oh-Oh-Oh-Ohhhh!
When I Look Up - 4/10 - I wish this was a longer song, and the length is the only reason I give it a low score. Could have been left off the CD and it wouldnt have made a difference. It sounds like an intro, and thats how I see it...as an intro to...
From The Clouds - 8.5/10 - I REALLY like this song. Its a summer beach song for sure. Love how the guitar and piano compliment each other. "Youre so sweet to me, when you beat me in double solitaire...and youre so sweet to me, in a world thats not always fair". Vintage Jack.
My Little Girl - 7/10 - A nice little love song. Simple, sincere, and to the point. Jack does mellow and tender like nobodys business. Best acoustic song on the CD.
Turn Your Love - 7/10 - I love the music on this track, and this song is growing on me quickly.
The Upsetter - 6/10 - My least favorite song on the CD...Just too much going on, it feels kinda clunky. I like parts of it and the lyrics, and get what he was trying to do, but it just doesnt work for me.
Red Wine, Mistakes, Mythology - 9/10 - Another song that WOWED me. A raw, jammy feel. Reminds me of something Id hear in a New Orleans club. Just a fun song with a funky vibe and great lyrics. This is summertime porch music.
Pictures of People Taking Pictures - 7.5/10 - This song had to grow on me. At first it annoyed me...but the more I listen, the more I like it. Ray Davies comes to mind when I hear the lyrics. And although it seems a bit repetitive at times, it somehow works. Give it a few listens and I think you'll agree.
Anything But The Truth - 7/10 - like the other slower, acoustic songs on this CD, this one is growing on me. Its soothing to listen to and the music is beautiful.
Only The Ocean - 8/10 - This song feels like a sunset on the beach, which is fitting for the closing song on the CD. Haunting music...good lyrics...it pulls me in every time I hear it. A great final track. Having the CD for a few days, I now believe this may be his best release to date. Overall, a must have for any Jack Johnson fan, and for anyone who likes fun, mellow, feel-good, non-pretentious music. Two enthusiastic thumbs up.
