By 1976, the Bee Gees had released the smash albums, "Main Course" and "Children of the World", and had pulled off the two #1 singles, "Jive Talkin" and "You Should Be Dancin". Feeling the high of their first successful streak in nearly 4 years, the Bee Gees decided to embark on an extensive concert tour throughout the country. One concert, performed at the Forum in LA, was recorded and planned on as being released as the first ever-live Bee Gees album. The Bee Gees presented a fantastic concert on the night of December 20th 1976! From the show opener "Gotta Get A Message To You", to the lively concluding number, "Lonely Days", the Bee Gees gave a very enthusiastic and enjoyable performance. Barry's renditions of "Words" and "Love So Right" are very memorable, and Robin's vibrato blasting lead in "I Started A Joke" and "Massachusetts" is outstanding! The brotherly harmonies are impeccable throughout each incredible song on the two-disc set. Because of the incredible variety of songs from dance music, balladry, and 60's pop, it doesn't take much to enjoy this album. I'm particularly partial to the incredibly energetic version of "Jive Talkin" and the beautifully performed, "Nights On Broadway". The Bee Gees are truly masters in all aspects of music, including live performance. "Here At Last...Bee Gees...Live" is really a fine example of the Bee Gees' ability to give a nearly flawless live performance. All in all, this is a wonderful CD to have in any collection, and by far one of the finest concerts ever released on record.

Hot August Night NYC (2 CD's) Review

Neil Diamond has recorded many live albums over the years, including the original "Hot August Night." As blasphemous as it may seem to some, this collection, "Hot August Night NYC," is the greatest of Neil's live albums. It has a stronger collection of songs than the original "Hot August Night." It has much less of the self-indulgence that has occasionally marred some of his other live recordings. Neil is in great voice and is clearly energized by the New York crowd. His appreciation of and graciousness to the fans is clear throughout. He does a marvelous job of integrating some of his wonderful new songs into the show. For me the highlight is his gorgeous and moving version of "Man of God" from the "12 Songs" CD that then takes us into "Hell Yeah" from the same CD. The first time I heard the original version of "Hell Yeah," I recognized it immediately as another Neil Diamond anthem song and wondered how it would play in concert. It plays beautifully. And "Man of God" is done in a more uptempo and gospel style than we find in the "12 Songs" version. The way it is performed here makes this one of Diamond's all-time great performances. It is remarkable that Neil Diamond, who has been with us for so long, should not only continue to do outstanding work, but do some of the best work of his career. He is now on a run of three straight fabulous CD's: "12 Songs," "Home Before Dark," and now "Hot August Night NYC." No Diamond collection is complete without these three CD's. And in this one, we get to hear a master entertainer still at the top of his craft.

If you are a fan of Delirious?, you should LOVE this DVD!!! As soon as I can, I'll be ordering the CD set from Amazon. Although, I have all of these songs on their other CDs and DVDs, most of these versions of my favorite songs sounded better to me on this DVD (with longer guitar solos and GREAT audio of the audience singing along).
NICE close-up shots of the band and the audience! In some ways, it was almost better than seeing them "live". When I saw them live (2x), I was far away from the large monitors. This DVD has shots of all the instruments being played, which makes it extra enjoyable for worship leaders to view. The entire concert had me glued to it (the extras did too).
There are Many special treats for those who are familiar with this band - a special appearance by Stew Smith (their original drummer), their children coming up on stage, and a behind the scenes look at their final European tour. My plan is to get this DVD as gifts for friends who like the older worship songs, which are included in the extras. It was a kick to hear the songs from their Cutting Edge days and to see Martin playing the Mandolin (even though I prefer the "rock" style songs).
Warning (before you buy it) - if seeing Martin becoming teary-eyed gets to you (like it does to me), make sure that you have a box of tissues close by prior to hitting the play button!
This DVD is reasonably priced, considering all of the extras it includes, and would make a WONDERFUL gift for anyone who likes Delirious? songs that were recorded 1992-2009.

On Sunday the 29th of November, five thousand fans were wedged into the sold out HMV Hammersmith Apollo Theatre in London, readyto see history get made as a seventeen-year voyage of worship discovery drew to a close. This was the final gig for Delirious?, and therecould hardly have been a better celebration of all that God has done through this band. Twenty-four hours later, Martin Smith had this tosay: What can I say? It was awesome, sad, happy, and definitive. One can never correctly adjudicate ones emotions at times like thisbut I feel at peace. I feel joy. I feel like I ve completed an assignment. And what an assignment it was. A Dove Award-winning, Grammynominated, RIAA Certified Gold-selling assignment. Delirious? helped score a whole new soundtrack for the church around the world, bringing honesty, passion, intimacy and heavenly pride back to the church and beyond. The Doors - Live in Europe 1968 (1991)

Any lack of polish in this production is pretty much due to the available video and film equipment of the day. That said, much of the old camerawork is quite creative and nicely done. In fact, I was riveted to this film from start to finish.
The onstage performances have a beautiful, timeless quality to them. The musicianship of the band comes across very nicely, this being a time before bands had stylists, directors, choreographers, and wardrobe masters.
Just amazing to see how, more than Morrison's charisma, more than any stoned-out vibe, the music itself was the true source of the Doors' power and energy. So seldom do we get to see excellent rock music performed without a lot of record company b***s***. Nobody told the band how to behave onstage, nobody but Jim dictated what he was going to wear, and so on. This footage was a revelation in that way.
To observe, on this DVD, Ray Manzarek hunched over his keyboards, fingering some amazing riffs, is to see a rather amazing illustration of rock performances that were all about THE MUSIC.
An absolute "must" for all Doors fans, and a real treat for fans of west coast rock. Recommended to anyone who has an interest in classic rock or sixties culture.

Barbra Streisand: The Concerts (2009)

Those of us fortunate enough to have bared witness to the career of this amazing artist since the beginning, know we have been and continue to be in the presence of absolute one-of-a-kind greatness. Those that haven't and think they know and have heard greatness, you can't even imagine.
Even if one isn't into this genre of music, you owe it to yourself to purchase this DVD and experience some of what so many of us have had the pleasure of for what's approaching now 50 years! I tell you, you will become magnificently enlightened because there's been no other vocalist to date that can come close. Yes, she IS that much better than any other.
You will hear the message in every song, every expression. A message of truth and passion from an artist who must have been inside the heart of every songwriter whose songs she has interpreted through her soul and her magnificent vocal instrument. There can be no other answer to how she is able to convey the depth and meaning of a song, all the while commanding you to listen to the lyrics and feel the meaning the way the composer had intended, and all without you even realizing it. You will find yourself waiting to exhale after every powerful note, but the greatest power is in her ability to deliver a note so softly, so gently, as nearly a whisper--it will leave you breathless. I'm sorry, but you don't need to scream and high-power through every song to show you can sing, like so many today. The true artistry is in the nuances, the subtleties.
I recommend this DVD to anyone truly interested in having your heart and soul, not just your ears, entertained. And when you're done with this magnificent selection, treat yourself to Streisand from the beginning, from Funny Girl through the years to this piece of work . . . then you too will understand what millions of us have been experiencing for nearly five decades, and why we feel we have been in the 'presence of true greatness'.

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Live in New York City (2001) Review

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Live in New York City (2001)

Q: What transforms a guy who formerly shrugged off Springteen into a die hard fanatic in one lighting-bolt of an electric moment?
A: THIS!
All of a sudden, I "get it."
Let me set the scene: I came home, dogged and tired, from work. I turned on the TV which, thanks to my roommate at the time, was tuned to MTV (I mention my roommate was watching because I despise MTV, both for what it has become and its contribution to; scratch that; its LEADERSHIP of, all that has become wrong with pop music today). And to add insult ot injury, who's video was on? Creed. Without getting off on a rant of what is probably a hundred reasons why, I'll simply say I hate f**king Creed! For the purpose of the story I do have to mention perhaps the biggest reason why: they are laughably fake in their stupid posturing and are poor performers at that. Their standard riffs and the laughable b.s. that is their overly-rightous lyrics simply enhance this disgusting sherade. So I let out a sigh of contempt, because I can't do a thing about their stupifying success, and move forward to HBO to see if I can catch a movie; and what's on? Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band Live in New York. Towards the end of a song (later I would come to know and love it as "Out In the Street") Bruce was prancing around the stage as the crowd chanted a chorus of, "Oh-oh-oh-oh!" I watched for a minute, smiled at the fun he and his band, whoever these guys are, were having, and decided to move on. Then a funny thing happened. All of a sudden there was a close-up of Bruce's sweaty face. His face red, he stood at the mic and shouted, "New York City!" The crowd screamed. He yelled it again. They screamed louder, drums thudering in the background. One more time: "New York City!!!" The crowd reached near meltdown. "Lets Go! One! Two!" A crisp piano plays the opening notes to "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," as the audience "sings" along to the melody. Bruce walks the stage, throwing his arms in the air, pointing at every section of the audience, an I-Mean-Business look on his face. I gotta see what happens. After a long work-up, he jumps off the piano he has now taken to, runs back to his mic, and again: "One, two, three, four!!!" The band busts full-force into the song and I am feeling something very exciting. As I watch Bruce rip through this song with more vigor, passion and flat-out rock chops than maybe anyone I've ever seen, I think to myself, now this is how it should be! This is ow its done! THIS is why I hate Creed and all their ilk! I flip back to MTV for a split second. Creed is still on (it must have been more than just one video - treat!). I flip back to Bruce. And back to Creed again. The difference is staggering. I'm flipping thinking, "rock star, douche bag. Rock star, douche bag." Back to Springsteen one last time and I say there. How could it get better. He hadn't introduced the band yet. After the band intro I was giddy with excitment from all the energy the was radiating out of Bruce, his band, the obvious love and comrodere between them; and the audience for that matter, and myself. The song is coming to a close, still at full force and Bruce, obviously tired, but somehow more vitalized than when he started, throws up his hand and yells, "Save me somebody!"
Amazing!
As it turns out, Bruce saved me. I finally understood why he is so popular. I never got the whole "Church of Springsteen" thing and never thought his biggest songs I heard growing up were anything so special. I liked them fine, but I like a lot of songs and artists. I only regard a handfull as beign something more; something special. Turns out I never gave Bruce enough of a chance.
My loss.
Since 2000 when this all went down I have become a die hard Boss fan. I have all the albums, I've been fortunate enough to see him a few times (thanks to "The Rising" and its tour coming right on the heels of my new found love and respect for the Boss as a performer and his lyrics), I've found quite a few songs that have inspired me in one way or another, I've gotten others into him and, God help me, I even karaoke his stuff. I consider myself on board with those who have been with him as far back as they can remember, because I feel like I have been too.
"Tenth Avenue," which is roughly 3 songs from the end of the HBO version, was what drew me in. The concert would soon be over and, obviously, I had fallen hard. Both for Springsteen and this live performance. I was kicking myself for not coming to this realization sooner, but I could not wait to right this terrible wrong. I rushed out and picked up the DVD and watched it over and over. At the same time I bought the cd version and listened to it over and over. This, other than previously purchasing "Greatest His" in '95 when I was 16 (even as a non-die hard Bruce fan I knew then that it was severly lacking in many a great songs; I just didn't realize how many), was my main introduction to the Boss. Years later, I wouldn't have the introduction any other way. Knowing what I now know about Bruce, his songs in various versions, and his live performances, the stuff captured here ranks among his best. At least in terms putting someone-new-to-Bruce's jaw on the floor.
So after going back and listening to all Bruce's stuff, falling in love with much of it, and driving everyone crazy who doesn't share my fascination with him (although most who watch this and have heard some of the stuff I told them they just had to hear, do see what I'm talking about; even if it doesn't convert them the way it did me, they can see there is so much more to Bruce than they ever thought and now understand why he is a legen to so many), I can honestly say that "Live in NYC" improves on many of Bruce's best works. And that's not an easy thing.
I've read some people complain about a relative lack of hits and standards here, but what is here is as good as anything he has ever done. To see the setlist does not do the quality justice since Bruce improves on so much and does so much differently. Emotionally, every song benefits from his live energy. Besides "Tenth Ave..." standouts include "Atlantic City," which completely reinvents the song. Bruce's vocals are so tight, so emotive, they send chills. Ditto "Youngstown" and "Lost In the Flood." All three of these songs best their album versions here. Only the DVD contains performances of "Backstreets" and "Darknes On the Edge Of Town," and its a damn shame there wasn't room for them on the CD because they too fall into the better-live category. Again, its the emotion in both the vocal quality as well as the all around playing; from Bruce's guitar work to the band's playing as a whole. I've been trying to get these audio versions ("Darkness" apears on the "Waiting on a Sunny Day" single along with "Thunder Road" and "Born to Run" from these NYC shows; but "Backstreets" remains MIA). "Light of Day" works in the same vein as "Tenth Avenue...," with Bruce takin' us to church and baptising us with his gospel of rock n' roll. It is an energetic, frenzied moment that will get you on your feet as if a you were just hit with 1,000 volts of electricity. Most concerts should be so lucky as to have one moment such as this. This show has (at least) two.
And I can't begin to explain his guitar chops on "Prove It All Night" and "Murder Inc." He is phenomenal to watch work that axe. Both the DVD and CD give all the guitar solos a big, blistering, stand out sound. You've never heard Bruce like this in the studio (this guitar-hero-greatness extends on an equal, and maybe larger, scale on the Barcelona DVD, if only because there are more chances for him bust it out on that set).
For that legendary E-Street comrodere, you can't beat "Tenth Ave..." here, but "Two Hearts," the super-chardged, cut-lose fun of "Ramrod," the block party that is "Out in the Street," and the emotional bond of "If I Should Fall Behind," are all a thing of beauty to behold - especially during this reunion phase. This crew needs eachother. Just look at Bruce's "Plugged" from his E-Street departure days - they are not the same apart. Yes, Bruce is a solo artist and the songs are his, but he is never better than when he is with his brothers (and first lady) at his side. Together they make his songs theirs - and ours. This is a band - not Bruce and some backing band. They are not replaceable. Even "E-Steet Shuffle," which plays over the end credits, sounds so good and so fun, I wish we could see the performance and I wish it were included on the CD.
So maybe there was a reason I had to stomach Creed after all. Oh yeah, and as far as this item, if I didn't mention it; get it! Both the DVD and CD.
It may just change your life.

When I was in high school and college (currently 27) I saw these guys in concert (few times). There was no dancing or moshing . . . it was sprinting. Sure you may like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Korn because they look a little off kilter and pretend to be a bunch of tough guys, mental patients, or hip hopper guys but be aware that Ministry is not playing. They're nasty and it shows. Marylin Manson may like to wear fake breasts scare everyone's parents, but these guys scared me AND my parents. Al Jorgensen(the lead singer) had been in Penthouse and rehab long before the Backstreet Boys so parents beware (he does a little drinkin on tour). These guys are so bad that I doubt there will ever be a VH1 Behind the Music on them so you should definately get this DVD,. . . .its BANGIN. This basically captures the live performances after the euro techno days but before nasty music turned pop. Its in 5.1 channel surround so on a hot system it puts you as close to the action as possible. My fiance is certainly not going to be impressed with this addition to our DVD library, but sometimes you gotta say SO WHAT.
